Country comes to town

Continued from page 1 Toddler Emily Amsler has been lucky enough to experience the farm life and its abundance of animals, especially feeding the chickens which is something she enjoys to do with her grandmother Therese Amsler. This will be something all children and adults can enjoy too this weekend when the Marlborough Poultry, Pigeon, Game and Duck Show brings country to town. This annual and popular show will be held on Friday and Saturday at the Riding for Disabled Arena on Taylor Pass Road. Therese, who is a committee member for the show, says around 550 entries have been received and will be judged to find the best in the breeds. There will be nine South Island

championships to be competed for and will be judged by six expert judges who are coming to Marlborough from all over New Zealand. “There are a lot more pigeon entries this year including a North Island group that comes every year. “What makes this show so popular is that it’s a favourite with families who bring along their young children. Some of these children don’t often get the chance to see a duck or pigeon, and the way we have designed the layout they can get up close. “You might even find your own egg,” Therese says. Therese also says people who have attended previous shows have made contact with the committee to find out where they can buy their own

Brian Dawson to stand for mayor By Cathie Bell Marlborough needs to actively attract more people and more businesses in an ‘urgent’ focus on the future, mayoral candidate Brian Dawson says. Brian is officially launching his mayoral campaign at an event on Friday evening with his supporters. A first-term councillor, he ran last election as mayor, and says he is excited about the election this October. “I’m standing because I think we need to be more urgent about our future. “Marlborough is a wonderful place to live, the climate, its many natural resources, but there are also challenges, an ageing and potentially declining population. “If that continues, we will have to reduce services because we’re not going to be able to afford the services we want and deserve.” The district needs to attract and retain people better, Brian says. It needs an ongoing campaign to

Brian Dawson.

ensure people focus on Marlborough to work, study, live and do business, he says. As a former banker and general manager of the Marlborough Chamber of Commerce, he says he has a strong background for the job as mayor, along with ‘excitement and enthusiasm’ about it. “We need to talk about who we’d want here, what would complement

what we have here.” Marlborough should identify those and then convince them to move here, Brian says. With the natural advantages of the district, many wouldn’t take much persuading, he says. However, he doesn’t go as far as offering incentives to encourage businesses to set up here. “We need to paint them a picture, leverage off our natural lifestyle advantages. “Other places are going to reach a tipping point where with house prices and lifestyle, people are going to see they could live anywhere, so let’s live in Marlborough.” Brian says it’s important the district supports the industries we have here now, and build up other potential industries, such as the film industry. “We have to make sure council is a lean, fit, enabling organisation. I want to be part of a team that makes sure council is as lean, fit, and as enabling

as it can be.” Retaining the people we have now is also important, Brian says. “We haven’t done enough to convince people to come back to Marlborough, the people we’ve lost.” A key part of that would be bringing together important groups in Marlborough, such as the chamber, Federated Farmers, the Marlborough Research Centre, iwi, and the Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology to develop an economic development strategy to provide an overview and direction for the region that all bought into. “What does Marlborough look like in 2030? What should it be like, what must we achieve, what must we avoid? We look at that and work back from there to see what we need to do.” Brian says he’s been lucky to be a councillor this term. “I really enjoy it, I feel really privileged, and I would like to be doing more of it.”

Salmon farms opening ‘new tide’ for industry Story and photo by Cathie Bell The next year is going to be a key one for the aquaculture industry, Marlborough mayor Alistair Sowman says. New Zealand King Salmon officially opened two new ‘third generation’ farms at Kopaua and Waitata in the Pelorus Sound yesterday, with Environment Minister Nick Smith, Alistair and a mix of aquaculture industry officials and suppliers attending. Alistair says a working group on aquaculture is meeting this week to find a way forward. It is the first time in his 12 years as mayor that all the parties with a stake in the issue are around the table and working together to achieve good results. “People are going to make good decisions going forward for Marlborough… I believe we will have a blueprint for aquaculture in this area in future.” Environment Minister and Nelson MP Dr Nick Smith says the opening of two new salmon farms in the Marlborough Sounds today is a welcome development for New Zealand’s aquaculture industry. “To be honest, there is not a lot of wild fish left to catch. For us, aquaculture is the way ahead.” NZ King Salmon has had ‘a long and difficult’ journey to expand their fishfarming business in the Marlborough Sounds, but it ‘has been worth it’, he says. The company had a 10-week Environmental Protection Agency hearing, which was then appealed several times, ending up in the Supreme Court, eventually winning approval for four of the 10 farms it applied for. Waitata and Kopaua are the first of those new farms. NZ King Salmon chief executive

Consent given An independent commissioner has approved plans by international fish researchers Sketterings to build a fish research farm on land at Okiwi Bay and discharge treated water into the bay. Strict conditions have been imposed on the consent to monitor the operation.

Vines Village chef Fran Nolan takes delivery of some freshly filleted salmon from Environment Minister Nick Smith, with Marlborough Mayor Alistair Sowman and NZ King Salmon chief executive Grant Rosewarne at the official opening of the company’s new Waitata farm.

Grant Rosewarne says the new farms will eventually take the company’s production from 6000 to 10,500 tonnes per year, and boost earnings to more than $170 million. “New Zealand King Salmon’s Marlborough Sounds operation supports 440 jobs and $115 million in annual export earnings, and comes from just 8 hectares of farms in the 800,000 hectare Sounds. No other primary industry is able to support so many jobs and families from such a small area.” The Waitata farm is in a high water-flow site, and 60 per cent of the fish produced there met the company’s ultra-premium

Ora King standards, which is ‘outstanding’, he says. Alistair says it is ‘essential’ any company taking a world-class product to the market has to have a sustainability story behind it. Nick agreed, saying economic growth needed to be balanced with environmental sustainability. “Our natural resources contribute not only to economic growth but also to quality of life. I am confident we will achieve that through such initiatives as the recently established Marlborough Sounds Salmon Working Group. “The Nelson and Marlborough communities need to work with the industry to find a way to further

grow while ensuring we maintain the environmental standards and recreational opportunities of the Sounds.” Nick says the farms’ opening is a significant milestone in that it is the first new aquaculture space allocated in nine years. “This development is particularly significant for the communities of Nelson and Marlborough. “We need to diversify our exports, and aquaculture adds value alongside our premium wines, apples, hops, berry fruits and traditional dairy and meat products. These new salmon farms help us build our regional brand as the home of fine food and beverages.”

Headlights Dear Ed, With regard to your article on motorists not turning their headlights on, I wish to congratulate Grant Baxter on his initiative, in having signs erected, at his own expense. I travel every day from Spring Creek to Blenheim at just after five in the evening, and the number of cars without headlights in the gloom is quite astounding. I do the same as Mr. Baxter, I flash mine hoping they will get the point, but on checking my rear vision mirror, I see that it makes no impression on these dangerous drivers. A lot of drivers seem to think that just because they can see the road in front of them, there is no need to light up, but they don’t realise how invisible they are to oncoming traffic. The primary reason for headlights on a vehicle is not so that you can see ahead but so that YOU can be seen by others. I think it is time that all headlights should be on, at all times, as leaving it up

Steve Lavers Picton No.

to individuals as to when to turn them on, is just not working. It is very disconcerting to think that you have a clear road ahead to overtake, judging by the oncoming headlights, to find that some inconsiderate, law breaking driver, with no headlights, is in between the lit up cars. Very scary indeed. I think Marlborough Roads and the New Zealand Transport Agency could be more helpful in posting signs, and not leave it up to private citizens to do the job. And, as under resourced, and busy as they are, I think the Police should conduct a crackdown on these dangerous, law-breaking drivers too: one car watching oncoming traffic, and another car a distance away to pull them up when alerted by the first car. This dangerous habit needs to be stamped upon, and the sooner the better, before someone loses their life. Richard Howe Spring Creek

Dear Ed I haven’t written into the paper for some months as there is so much hassle about the costings of the new theatre. If they had stuck to the plans the cost would have been much less and the building may have been finished on time! If you remember there was lots of opposition to the site and having to change the road, making it dangerous for traffic. How much did it cost and was it added on the theatre debt? Kathie

Accountability and transparency Dear Ed, With the local elections due later this year, I feel that with the debacle over the financing of the theatre, it is time for some transparency. A good starting point would be to publish the names of the councillors who voted to underwrite the project without knowing what the final costing would be. Not putting in place a representative to monitor the amount of money being spent and having no control on how it is being spent and how much is being spent. Due to the actions of these councillors the rate paying people of Blenheim are now saddled with these ongoing costs for years ahead. Publish the names and let the public decide, do we want them returned to manage our money again? KIWI

Kelly Purdie, on her walk for Junior Parkinsons Disease, in the Marlborough Sounds.

Walking to combat disease By Cathie Bell Kelly Purdie has walked, and then cycled, around the South Island in an effort to raise awareness and funds for juvenile Parkinson’s disease. She started in Dunedin and rested for a week in Marlborough before starting her trek back to Dunedin. Originally from Britain, she has lived in New Zealand for more than nine years and decided last year that she would walk around the South Island before heading back to Britain. Kelly has had ‘Juvenile Parkinsons’ Disease’ since she was 15 years old and says she wants to help raise awareness of it. “Since the disease is so rare, she was misdiagnosed for 10 years, finally being diagnosed at the age of 25. This meant that she struggled with life throughout her late teens and young adult life, not knowing what was wrong with her and struggling with everyday life. Kelly’s sister is 36 years old now, and is to have a brain operation known as ‘Deep

Brain Stimulation’. The operation has risks, so Kelly is to return to Britain to help her sister and children. Before heading back to Britain, Kelly decided to do ‘something a little crazy’.... walking around the South Island and talk to people about her condition. “It is so rare, out of the several hundreds of people I have met along my journey, only one person has heard of it.” She expects to finish the journey next month, and has been fundraising through the Givealittle system, with the money going directly to the Multiple Sclerosis and Parkinson’s Society in Canterbury. “My journey has been challenging but it would be boring if it was easy and I have loved it and am still loving it! “Another bonus for walking the South Island, is seeing even more of the amazing scenery New Zealand has to offer - I love it! “I hope to return to New Zealand at a later date to live again and will be very sad to leave.”

ALL WORKMANSHIP GUARANTEED

There are some very impressive things happening at Details in Sutherland Terrace, and if the cars that are rolling out cleaned, buffed, polished and waxed are anything to go by, it’s worth taking a look for yourself. The business has been owned by local couple Aaryn and Ange Nicholson for the past four and a half years. The most recent changes have been some of the most exciting. The business was formerly known as Blenheim Auto Groomers before being rebranded six months ago. The new name ‘Details’ is a clearer reflection and better representation of what they do. Aaryn has over two decades experience as a professional detailer. Recently Aaryn travelled to Florida where he furthered his knowledge by training along side world renowned detailer Mike Phillips at Autogeek. The training was to ensure the techniques and methods of detailing that Aaryn is providing are of the highest standards. “With automotive paint systems changing frequently we in the detailing industry need to keep up with the new technology” Aaryn says. “They were very impressed that I travelled from New Zealand to attend and I have established great contacts worldwide with a number of the leading car care product manufacturers, suppliers and a global network of professional detailers.”

Aaryn has been invited to appear on Competition Ready a Discovery Channel Programme focusing on Automotive Detailing. Details are excited to announce that Aaryn has recently been chosen by CarPro to be an authorized C. Quartz FINEST installer. This makes him the only detailer in the South Island being able to offer FINEST. C.Quartz FINEST has been described as being an ‘evolution in ceramic nanotech paint coatings’ and is the exclusive flagship ceramic coating from CarPro. “This is the most exclusive automotive surface protection in the world due to the quality. Detailers must be approved to use this product by providing a portfolio of their detailing and paint polishing skills. I’m extremely proud to have been selected by CarPro as a FINEST installer and consider it to be a huge achievement and acknowledgement of the time and hard work I have invested in mastering this craft and I’m looking forward to introducing FINEST to my customers,” Aaryn says. Details is also proudly affiliated to the International Detailing Association (IDA). The IDA is the leading industry association for professional detailing operators, suppliers and consultants to the industry. The IDA offers it members various educational programmes and certification training that establishes continued proficiency in the art of detailing.

Testimonials from happy clients “There are some very talented Detailers in NZ and it seems that the best of them fly well under the radar. Aaryn from Blenheim is one such detailer. This man has some serious skills and he’s a member of the IDA to boot.” Gordon - Final Touch Car Care, Auckland “I feel fortunate to have found Aaryn at Details in Blenheim and having had cars detailed in Canada and the United Kingdom, I can say with conviction that he is the best!” Ken Webb, England

“After meeting and working with you at Autogeek I can tell that you’re just like me in that you have a true passion for this craft. Incredible work and I really appreciate you being a member of this forum and always sharing your work as well as helping others.” Mike Phillips Host of Competition Ready on Velocity Channel, Director of Training at Autogeek & Marine 31, IDA Board Member, CD-SV, RT

Almost there on memorial wall project By Cathie Bell It is almost time for the writing to go on the wall, and the Marlborough Returned Services Association is encouraging families with people on the roll of honour to get in touch. For the past three months, the RSA has been fundraising to build a new memorial wall to those 647 Marlborough men and women killed during service since the South African war in 1901. The memorial clock tower is too hard for older people and those in wheelchairs to get to, and the RSA decided to build a new memorial wall outside the Clubs of Marlborough so that people could get close to the names and leave small tokens of remembrance. It also offers people a chance to amend the details on the roll of honours, fixing spelling and other mistakes. Project manager and RSA executive

House of Hearing

100% NZ Owned & Operated

member Christine Bamber says the final wording for the wall will go to the stonemasons on Friday, so people need to get changes in quickly. “We had another four last week. There have been a few alterations, which is brilliant, it’s what we need.” Most have been the ages or place of death, she says, but there have also been some correcting of names. Chris says the community has donated $25,330 of the $30,000 needed. The granite has arrived, and is at Sowman’s Monumental Masons, which has donated $10,000 to the wall, as has the Marlborough District Council. The wall will be unveiled on September 15, Christine says, and work will start on erecting it about 10 days earlier. The wall will be around 2.3 metres tall and made up of five 90 centimetre-wide granite panels.

Game of strategy Bridge Club seeking more members Story and photo by Celeste Alexander Bridge is a hugely popular card game that is enjoyed by people of all ages right here in Marlborough. It’s a game that is also very social says Marlborough Bridge Club member Kay McKellar. Kay has been a club member for 36 years and even though there are around 200 members, she says they are looking to attract more. The club would like to attract some younger members for its evening sessions and hopes to do this by hosting an ‘intro afternoon’ on August 7 from 1:30-3:30pm. “We will have members on hand to help and explain the game. If people enjoy it then they can sign up and join the club,” Kay says.

The youngest player that the club has is in their teens and the oldest in their 90’s. “It’s a classic game of strategy and can appeal to anyone. It’s also great for socialising and meeting new people so we hope to see new people coming along,” she says. The Marlborough Bridge Club holds sessions four days a week and is an open club with no graded sessions. It has its own room located at the Clubs of Marlborough. This means that at any time you can play with a rank beginner or master. “It’s not a complicated game as long as you can count to 13,” Kay says. For those wanting to find out more some demonstrations will be held at the Blenheim library in the last week of July.

THE TEST OF T ME

32

YEARS

Simcox Antony Clark

Murray Bush How many years have you been in business? 100 years. Started by my Grandfather in 1916 and continued for 60 years by my father John Bush. Now into the third generation of Murray and Peter Bush. What is it about your line of work that is most satisfying? Seeing customers grow up who then bring their own kids to buy honey. Also opening a beehive and marveling at the mystery of the bee. They have been around for over 100 million years and yet we barely understand how they perform incredibly complex tasks. What has been your most memorable highlight over these years? Working with my father and being taught bees are not a commodity for profit, but a living thing.

His passion was infectious. He worked his last beehive aged 76 and is still going strong. What is it about this region that has kept you here? It has the best climate, great scenery, and a fantastic place to raise a family. And produces the best honey. How has your business/industry changed over time? Once it was all lucerne, clover seed and animals, then apples and other fruit, now we have grapes. Sadly large corporate beekeeping is now forcing many smaller businesses out of the industry. What words of advice would you give to other businesses in this economic climate? Be honest to yourself and your products and your customers will follow. And work hard.

How many years have you been in business? 32 years. What is it about your line of work that is most satisfying? Helping people, building dreams, building Marlborough. What has been your most memorable highlight over these years? So many highlights, helping our clients grow, helping our staff grow, assisting Marlborough at times of emergency with flooding and earthquakes. Very proud of our people.

What words of advice would you give to other businesses in this economic climate? Passion, Pride and People. Make sure you have fun on the way!!

What is it about this region that has kept you here? This is our home (and Marlborough has the best beer, wine & pies!). How has your business/industry changed over time? We started with 3 people doing drainage. Now we have 65+ doing drainage, septic systems, CCTV, dams, subdivisions, quarrying and crushed aggregates, earthworks and a whole lot more.

YEARS

Noel Templeton Optometrists How many years have you been in business? 39 years in total, with 25 being here in Blenheim. What is it about your line of work that is most satisfying? The advances in eye care and health are ever-changing and it is such an exciting and continually evolving industry. Being able to bring to our clients the latest in technology gives answers to their concerns much more quickly and has broadened our scope. What has been your most memorable highlight over these years? The move from Auckland and setting up here. It was a whole new lifestyle and professional approach. After

that would be the move to our new premises at George Street. What is it about this region that has kept you here? The Marlborough Sounds and all the great leisure activities with everything so close. How has your business/industry changed over time? Huge advances in technology where we have easier, faster and more noninvasive ways of establishing routes of care. What words of advice would you give to other businesses in this economic climate? Blenheim is quite buoyant at the moment, but always be vigilant as this can change in an instant.

Blenheim Drycleaning Dave Poole How many years have you been in business? I’ve owned the business for the past 9 years, but Blenheim Drycleaning has been on Queen Street since the 1950’s. What is it about your line of work that is most satisfying? Having worked in service related industries for close to 30 years, it’s the relationships that you develop with people that I find the most satisfying. How has your business/industry changed over time? We’ve diversified - we are more than just a dry cleaners.

Blenheim Drycleaning & Laundry

What has been your most memorable highlight over these years? See the smile on peoples faces when we clean an item they have given up on. What is it about this region that has kept you here? I came back to Blenheim 20 years ago to raise a young family. It’s a great place to live and work. What words of advice would you give to other businesses in this economic climate? Do the right thing - It’s the putting right that counts.

Recruits help to restore war time RNZAF station Forty-nine Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF) recruits have helped the Marlborough Garrison Society to restore some of the buildings that were once part of World War 2 RNZAF station Omaka. The R2/16 RNZAF Recruit Course includes recruits entering trades such as logistics, aircraft maintenance, aviation refuellers, avionic mechanics, firefighters and intelligence specialists. The recruits spent time preparing the ground for foundations, painting, clearing gutters and sanding weatherboards in preparation for painting. Air Force recruit courses (there are three a year), are divided into flights, each of which is given a name that reflects historical aircraft, bases, people or events that are significant and relevant to the RNZAF. Command Recruit Training School Chief Instructor Flight Sergeant Malcolm Walshe said it was decided to capture a local Marlborough perspective for R2/16 recruit course, so the flights were named Delta and Omaka. “Delta and Omaka were busy and historic Marlborough RNZAF stations throughout World War 2 and something we wanted the trainees to learn more about.

“In the early stages of this recruit course I saw something on social media about how the Garrison Society needed some help to restore the former Omaka buildings and surrounds and transform it into New Zealand’s only working World War 2 military base. “I couldn’t let this opportunity slide, especially with a flight named Omaka. I contacted the society and offered our help,” he says. Malcolm says recruits get a great sense of pride and achievement from helping the local community and putting something back into it. “Community service is integrated into recruit training as it allows our recruits to increase their sense of belonging to the community and give something back to the region that has and continues to offer so much to the RNZAF.” Learning the history and traditions of the RNZAF is a crucial objective throughout recruit course training, and trainees are required to give a presentation to staff and course mates on the history and background of their flight name. The R2/16 Recruit Course will graduate on 12 August at RNZAF Base Woodbourne.

Scallop fishing prohibited in Sounds The Marlborough Sounds will be closed to recreational and commercial scallop fishing this season the Government says. Primary Industries Minister Nathan Guy says for sustainability reasons the decision was made to close part of the Southern Scallop Fishery (SCA7), which covers the top and northwest coast of the South Island, for the coming season. The measures will see scallop fishing prohibited in all of the Marlborough Sounds and part of Eastern Tasman Bay for the coming season, ending on 14

February 2017. “This decision follows the latest scientific survey in 2015 which shows a continued and significant decline in the fishery, despite commercial catch reductions over the past three seasons,” Mr Guy says. “The strong message from the scientific evidence, as well as public submissions is the need to take the next step and close parts of the fishery to let it recover. “These closures will rest the beds, allowing mature scallops to spawn uninterrupted and juvenile scallops to grow.”

Brayden wins gold By Cathie Bell Blenheim man Brayden Graham has won gold at the International Mixed Martial Arts Federation world championships in Las Vegas. He took out the men’s flyweight category, winning four fights to take out the title. Speaking to The Sun the day of his win, Brayden was still ecstatic. “I’m on top of the world. My body is feeling good. I’ve been training for this, my strength and fitness, for eight years. “I’ve got a wee scratch on my face, but apart from that, I’m happy. I’m on top of the world.” Brayden is the first-ever IMMAF world champion from New Zealand, and then, another teammate won their category, so the New Zealand team is just thrilled with their success, he says. “That’s an achieve-

ment. I’m so rapt, coming from Blenheim, little old Blenheim. If you’ve got a goal, you can achieve it. “If you have a dream, write it down, make it a goal, you can achieve it.” Last week, Brayden beat a French fighter, and then over the weekend, he fought a fighter from Northern Ireland, one from England, and then the final against an Irish fighter. He says the fight against the Northern Irish fighter was tough and really close. “I had to really grind him down. I won on points.” The next day, he fought the English fighter in a match he won in the second round. The final fight was competitive, Brayden says. It didn’t start well for him and he lost the first round, but Brayden says he’s been ‘in deeper water’ in Marcelo Lopes’ gym in Blenheim, and he recovered in the second

round, taking back control and landing some good punches and getting a knockout call. “He wasn’t fighting back so the referee called it off. “I respected all my opponents. I’m grateful to share the ring with them, but they were in the way and I wanted to win.” Everyone in the New Zealand team is ‘pretty happy’, Brayden says, and it was ‘amazing’ seeing a teammate get through too, he says. “I got two sides of it today… I’m happy to share it with the team, my family, my girlfriend, the town. I’m just so grateful to be here. “I hope it inspires some people and make all the sports people in town realise it doesn’t matter where you’re from and what your situation is, you can do anything.” Brayden tha n ks h is coaches Marcelo Lopes
