Five plus Health shuttle celebrates

Story and photo by Cathie Bell The health shuttle operated by St John’s has clocked up five years and many thousands of kilometres. In fact, driver Graeme Haymes says he covered 440 kilometres in one day picking up people from around the district and taking them to their doctor’s and dentist’s appointments. Continued on page 2 The St John’s health shuttle is celebrating five years in Marlborough. Graeme Faulkner, Pat Barnes, and Graeme Haymes are pictured with the shuttle.

Health shuttle clocks up five years in the district Continued from page 1 Shuttle spokesman Graeme Faulkner says the service is wellused and has been since it was set up five years ago. Despite that, he wants to highlight the service and make sure that everyone who could use its service does so. “We want to celebrate five years of service for the health shuttle. “We’re still going strong, still out

there, doing all medical based appointments over the whole area of Marlborough, although Picton and Blenheim are our busiest areas.” The health shuttle takes people from their homes to medical appointments and return, Graeme says. That includes dental appointments and also includes transporting people to events such as those offered by Alzeimers Marlborough. It is a free service, although a dona-

tion is welcome, Graeme says. The health shuttle is part-funded by the Primary Health Organisation. “We’re mainly taking elderly people but we are open to anyone with need, particularly mothers with kids, for dental appointments and medical appointments, we’re more than happy to take them. We have carseats for children.” The service has a staff of 17 altogether, Graeme says, some who have

been with the health shuttle since it started five years ago. “We always look forward to any extra people interested, we’d like to hear from them.” Some days are busier for shuttle drivers than others. Mondays tend to be a bit slower, with fewer appointments scheduled, but driver Graeme Haymes says that just the other day, he drove 440 kilometres in one day ferrying people around.

Falcon trust benefits from charity ball Story and photo by Cathie Bell Last month’s charity ball has raised over a thousand dollars for the Marlborough Falcon Trust. Charity ball committee chairman James Ryan presented a cheque to falcon trust chairman Andy Frost. Andy says the trust is delighted to receive the donation from the charity ball. “It is wonder ful that in the Marlborough community there are volunteers who enjoy organising wonderful events for Marlburians.” He says the night of the ball was ‘awesome’ with great music, wonderful food, and people having fun, ‘getting dressed up and, judging by the intensity of the dancing, keeping fit at the same time’. The falcon trust’s primary aim is to increase the number of karearea in the wild, but also has a broader aim of spearheading general conservation with a ‘magnificent’ endemic species, he says. “We’re a conservation organisation, and we only have to look around Marlborough to witness our superb

natural environment with the Richmond Ranges, Marlborough Sounds, Nelson Lakes, and the two Kaikoura Ranges. Conservation is important to our region.” The trust is lucky to be supported by multinational Pernod Ricard, Andy says, but small sponsors add a local

connection. James says the organisers are pleased to support a local trust, and future events will also support local organisations. All the ball’s proceeds have gone to the trust, he says. “It was a really great night. All the

feedback has been really good. Next year, it will be bigger and better.” The ball was held at the Brancott Winery in Riverlands on June 25, and James thanks the businesses backing the charity ball, especially Pernod Ricard, BPM, Cinnamon House, and Omega Seafood.

Improving the main street, little bit by little bit By Cathie Bell Pelorus community pre-schoolers have made their mark, and everyone has the opportunity to add their bit to a beautification project going on in Havelock’s main street. Havelock Enhancement Working Group project leader Glynnis Paton says the feedback about the mosaics has been ‘amazing’. Glynnis says ‘something is happening’ in Havelock. A stroll down the main road this summer will go past the Havelock i-SITE, the Community Hub, Havelock Community Office all operating out of the ‘Eyes on Nature’ historic building next to the Town Hall. Not far is the Rutherford Pickering Memorial where on the kerbing a mosaic featuring bird tiles is taking shape. She says the Havelock Community Plan identified beautification as a priority initiative for the town’s future development and this project is well on its way to contributing to the visual streetscape of the main road. The group made an application to the Marlborough District Council’s creative communities scheme to provide supplies and material, Glynnis says. “A call out for donations from FlooringXtra in Blenheim and from the local community provided a generous assortment of tiles for the project to get underway.” The mosaic features art tiles of tui, fantail, morepork and kereru, the native birds that are seen and heard in the hills behind the park, she says. The donated tiles are used to create an abstract free form style linking the bird tiles.

Nominations for people interested in standing for the Marlborough District Council, as mayor, or for the Nelson Marlborough District Health Board have opened. People have until noon on August 12 to put their names forward for election. Electoral official Mike Porter says two nominations have been received so far, both from sitting councillors. Brian Dawson is standing as a candidate for mayor and for the Blenheim ward, and David Oddie in the Marlborough Sounds ward.

Vandals have ripped out the community table tennis table at Blenheim’s pop up park ‘Mitchells on Wynen’, a sports space opened for public use in March. It provided an urban play space for children with a basketball hoop and the table tennis table along with a container of sports gear for public use. Council Reserves and amenities officer Robert Hutchinson says it is extremely disappointing to see what’s happened and we will now have to consider whether it’s worth replacing. It will cost $1500 to repair the table and $500 to fix the turf, he says.

Picton Cinemas

The new main street mosaics in Havelock are visited by a group of children and teachers from the Pelorus Community Pre- School.

Glynnis says she and Anne Boddy, who is also leading the project, are amazed at the positive feedback from locals and visitors who stop by and comment on the artwork. The Havelock Enhancement Working Group organises community working bees every Saturday, dry weather only, from 11.00am to midday and everyone is welcome to join in. In between times, the working group continues on with the mosaic

and has already had the Pelorus Community Pre-schoolers add their artistic flair to the mosaic, Glynnis says “After the school holidays, we look forward to working with a group of children from the Havelock School,” she says. “Anyone is welcome to join us whether you are arty or not and what a great way to meet other people. We plan on completing the mosaic by end of October just in

Omaka’s new wing a drawcard By Cathie Bell The Second World War-themed extension at the Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre has hosted its first conference event with flying colours. The Aggregate and Quarrying Association held its national conference in Blenheim last week with about 400 people attending a lunch on Friday at Omaka. The bulk of the conference was at the ASB Civic Theatre Destination Marlborough also hosted two people from Tourism NZ’s business events team as part of work the two organisations do to attract international conferences to the region through their Business Events

Advocates programme. Association president Roger Parton says the theatre was a great venue for a conference. “It’s a wonderful addition to the convention centre facilities there, the two together are making Marlborough a great place to come.” He says New Zealand is desperately short of good conference venues. “Blenheim has good space for plenaries, exhibitions space, and it is supported by good accommodation and supported by good catering too.” Roger says he was also involved with the Rural Contractors’ Federation, which

held its national conference in Blenheim last year. “I’ve been running conferences since 1991, I know what I’m looking for. This is excellent.” Destination Marlborough’s trade development manager Wendy Desiles says the Tourism New Zealand visit went very well. “They were impressed to see the new ASB theatre setting up for the Quarry conference in partnership with the Marlborough Convention Centre. I also took them to see the expansion work in progress at Chateau Marlborough and the new exhibition and function space at Omaka.”

Entertainer’s show postponed Children’s entertainment Party Confidential has been postponed until October. The show was to have run on Monday, but Australian entertainer Sean Murray had a family emergency and the show was cancelled.

A sign at the ASB Civic Theatre says it will be offered again on October 4, and people can either exchange their tickets or get a full refund at the theatre’s box office. Fresh from the Edinburgh Fringe Festival,

A warmer, drier, quieter home MagicSeal is a secondary glazing system designed to stop heat loss and reduce condensation and external noise, while at the same time reducing ultraviolet radiation to create a warmer, drier, quieter home. MagicSeal is extremely cost efffective, MagicSeal Marlborough Ltd’s Doug Powell says. “Because existing windows do not have to be removed or retro-fitted with completely new glazing, MagicSeal offers a significant cost advantage over conventional double glazing. “Installation is quick, and carried out with minimal disruption to the household so it’s a winner all round”, says Doug. The acrylic glazing used by MagicSeal has much better insulation properties than glass. The W.E.R.S window energy rating scheme rates the MagicSeal system at 5 in a 7-point rating system which measures heating and cooling efficiency. As well as significantly cutting heat loss, he says homeowners will notice a dramatic drop-off in condensation levels, too, and test have shown external noise reductions of up to 55 per cent are possible. The UV-treated acrylic Plexiglass comes with a 30 year warranty against discolouring. Once installed, it is impossible to tell it has been placed over the existing windows. Call Doug today to discuss your needs.

Kids’ Party Confidential show is billed as a raucous ride for adults and children aged 5 to 12, creating the best fiesta ever. After the show, there will be a workshop where kids can create their own games.

A taiko, or magenta petrel.

Man helps rare birds Blenheim man Mike Bell will speak at public meetings today and tomorrow about his ground-breaking conservation work on the Chatham Islands with the critically endangered taiko seabirds. The taiko, or magenta petrel, was thought to be extinct until rediscovered in 1978 by amateur ornithologist David Crockett. Now a community conservation group, Chatham Islands Taiko Trust, is spearheading the project to save this species from extinction.

Mike provides leadership to the group as it delivers ground breaking conservation in one of the most challenging work environments in the country, and he will talk to the Kaipupu Point Sanctuary group’s meeting tonight at 7pm at Endeavour Park Pavilion in Picton, and tomorrow night at 7.30pm to the Forest and Bird monthly meeting in the Blenheim School Hall. All are welcome, with tonight’s meeting being a gold coin donation to Kaipupu Point.

Water meters proposed Water meters are being proposed for Havelock to help pinpoint leaks in the township’s water supply network and to allow property owners to monitor their consumption and reduce water use, after figures showing Havelock homes use a third more water than other properties in Marlborough. Havelock’s 500 properties (not including the port area) have the highest water consumption in Marlborough, averaging more than 1000 litres per person a day, up to 300 litres more than Blenheim, Picton and Renwick properties. But that extra use could be leaks in the system. Council’s assets and services manager Richard Coningham says meters would help to pinpoint the leaks in Havelock’s aging water reticulation system. The township’s water comes from a shallow aquifer where intruding seawater causes

corrosion and taste issues. Council has allocated funding in its Long Term Plan to search for an improved water source. Chairman of the Havelock Water Committee councillor Graeme Barsanti says if the town can reduce its water take by about 30 per cent, salt intrusion will reduce but council will still need to find a new water source. Finding a new water source remains a priority, he says. In the meantime, water meters should be installed for monitoring only and Council will pay for them from its Forestry Reserve. There’s already a budget in place to investigate the use of water metering for Renwick in 2017-18 as part of its water supply improvements and it may reduce costs to deal with both areas together. Council’s assets and services committee will consider the proposal next week.

Dear Ed, I too drive before sunrise and sunset and it’s really annoying to see so many cars out there with no lights on, do they think that they are saving power or something? The road code says you must drive with lights on, and not park lights, they are only for parking. Most of the cars I see are dark colors too. Thanks Grant for trying something. Dave Dyer Dear Ed, Well done Grant Baxter in his campaign to get people to switch lights on in poor light or semi-darkness. At 7am, there’s some idiots driving with no lights; at 5.30pm and later, the same. They may eat carrots but other drivers may not. I suggest police get out and target these drivers of the darkness. Dear Ed, It’s interesting that at Friday’s “Stop Mandatory Fluoridation in NZ” talk by international speaker Professor Paul Connett, there was no representation present from the DHB, the MDC or media. Has the decision already been made to force without consent the mandatory ingestion of this hazardous substance? For those who made the effort to keep an open mind and hear Professor Connett’s litany of facts refuting the regurgitations of so-called expert claims, it was a refreshing enlightenment that further demonstrates the urgency for New Zealanders to get informed before it’s too late. The practice of fluoridated water is outdated, dangerous, totally violates personal right to consent, and should be stopped. Manson S.

Dear Ed, It’s interesting to see the theatre debate and the counter-attack by council and some of the public to forget about the debacle as to costs, wrong siting, associated traffic danger etc., and get on with it. Yes the theatre is there, warts and all, to stay. It is an asset. Few would deny. But the point is the theatre has been a case of lack of foresight, lack of accountability etc.,

Helicopter rescues three Three people have been rescued from a snow-clad mountain in the Nelson Lakes area. The Nelson Marlborough Rescue helicopter was despatched after the Rescue Coordination Centre in Wellington received signals from an emergency locator beacon around 5pm on Monday. The signal was tracked to an area between West Sabine Hut and Travers saddle, but the helicopter crew had difficulty finding the

party because of a poor signal. Further satellite hits relocated the area higher than originally searched to the Travers Saddle where the three were found sheltering in a snow cave they had built. A St John Intensive Care paramedic was off loaded near their shelter and assessed the party. The three were then lifted off the mountain and flown to Nelson, with two suffering mild hypothermia.

Gabrielle McGruddy (8) won Reserve Champion for her pigeon at the Marlborough Poultry, Pigeon, Game and Duck show held last Friday and Saturday.

Tickled by feathered friends at bird show Story and photo by Celeste Alexander Over 1000 people went along to the Marlborough Poultry, Pigeon, Game and Duck Show at the weekend, many who managed to make a feathered friend or two along the way. An array of beautiful birds were on display to the public on Friday and Saturday at the Marlborough Riding for Disabled arena. Squeals of delight could be heard from children who got up close to hand feed the birds, and there was plenty of intrigue from others who had never seen some of the more unusual breeds up close. Show secretary Kevin Sowman says it was another very successful show with 550 entries, and for an event that is in its 129th year it’s “great to see it’s still gaining in popularity”. “We had excellent feedback from those who entered from out of town, all of whom said they would return again next year. “Plus it’s great to see the number of entries and public going through increasing. It’s still very popular in Blenheim,” he says.

Many of the local entries managed to win championship titles as well as placings and certificates. Dave and Marie Booker and their grandson Charlie won the South Island Championships in the heavy breeds. Helen Croudis and son Mitch both won South Island Championships in the hard feathered bantams, and the McGruddy family of Picton managed a number of major award winners in the pigeon section. New to the show, Grace Brydon of Renwick competed for the second time this year in a range of sections, but her major win came from the heavy breeds. “It’s great to see new and young people coming into the show and doing well,” Kevin says. The New Zealand Poultry, Pigeon and Cage Bird Association has a membership of around 30 and first began in 1887. Even world wars didn’t stop the association. Despite many of the committee members going to World War Two, members decided to carry on, rather than to put the association into recess.

Sounds a memorable starting point Author Gareth Solomon grew up in Marlborough, and he tells Cathie Bell about why the Marlborough Sounds has such a starring role in his scifi fantasy thriller novel, even though he lives in Melbourne now. Gareth Solomon’s book, Footsteps from the Shadows, is a fantastic story mixing aspects of ancient Chinese mythology and history with a thriller around Chinese triads stealing historic treasures from Te Papa, the national museum in Wellington. But a large part of the action is based in the Marlborough Sounds, including possibly the most memorable scene in the book, a dive to a wrecked boat, lost in a mystical storm just inside Queen Charlotte Sound. It proves the turning point for one of the book’s two main heroes. Gareth is based in Melbourne, Australia now, and has a new career as a mortgage broker, but he spent the first 25 years of his life living in Marlborough. The Marlborough Sounds were a huge part of his life, and he spent many happy hours there diving. “I did a huge amount of diving in the Sounds, and I started diving at nine years of age. I worked as a commercial diving instructor. “It’s just my happy place really. “When I was mucking around with writing as a novice, my sister-in-law said ‘write what you know’. That was one of the things I know about, and I still love the Marlborough Sounds.” Footsteps from the Shadows is his first book, and he says it wasn’t an easy process. “I wrote a book. How long did it take? That’s the $1million question. It wasn’t a linear process, it was kind of involved. “I started it when I was about 27, I wrote a little bit and realised it wasn’t very good. “So I went away, I learnt how to write, then I had a bad accident and took a few years off. “I started again when I was 31 or so, about nine years ago. I wrote about 40,000 words and my computer fried itself. I lost everything, it wasn’t backed up.

“I questioned whether I wanted to be a writer at all. “Then, I moved to Melbourne. I decided this was it, I’d gone too far not to do it. “So I started fresh, and it took three years to write it, another couple of years to edit it, it was not a linear process.” Gareth says he was keen to include his ‘love’ for history in his writing, and he’s most interested in the ‘off-beat history’ of Asian nations, and well as his love of diving. The novel grew from there, he says. “The dive where Chris and his brother Drew get into trouble is the first scene from the book I wrote. “I used to work at the Blenheim Dive Centre, Kevin Bailey told a story about diving on the Mikhail Lermontov, about someone who got stuck and people having to sit on board the dive boat and having to wait till he couldn’t come back. That story stuck in my mind.” Gareth says wreck diving is amazing. There is a wreck by Karaka Point which is used as part of a divemaster’s course, he says. “Basically you go in through the hull and out through the cabin. “Once three people have been through, you can’t see anything, the silt is all stirred up and it’s impossible…I have good underwater navigation but I ended up in the wrong way. The silt started up, it cuts out all the light.” Footsteps from the Shadowns came out in September last year to ‘not enough reaction’,

Gareth Solomon has set his fantasy thriller in the Marlborough Sounds.

Gareth laughs. “It’s sort of trickling out there… I’ve released the book, now I have to figure out how to market it to people.” He is working on a sequel, but isn’t sure when that will be published.

He still comes to Marlborough for his holidays. His Mum and Dad are in Wellington now, but his brother and aunties and uncles and cousins are all in Marlborough. The chances are Marlborough will star in the sequel as well.

Congratulations to Lindsay & Kay for 20 years in business

Celebrations at Lynfords Quality homes from builders you can trust

This weekend is going to be a momentous celebration for Blenheim business Lynfords Furniture. Owners Kay and Lindsay Thomason are celebrating 20 years of being in business, an incredible feat and one they want to thank their customers for. To mark the occasion they will be hosting an in-store event on1allonly! weekend with additional perks on Sunday like free coffee, wine tasting and a sausage sizzle for guests. “This is our way to thank the community for the continued support shown to us.” Lynfords Furniture has been in its new building on Scott Street for four years. The large open showroom floor has enabled Kay and Lindsay to stock a huge array of New Zealand-made and imported furniture, including being the flagship store in the area for Stressless. Everything is personally chosen by the management staff for its quality and unique style. “We are often complimented on what we have in store, even by out of town customers who love the colours and styles. “Another thing we are known for is our New Zealand-made lounge suites where customers can personalise their sofa by selecting from our huge range of fabric samples. This goes hand in hand with Kay’s expertise and qualifications in interior design where she can help

History of Lynfords - a family affair In celebrating Lynfords Furniture’s 20 years in business, owners Kay and Lindsay Thomason look back to where it all began. Lindsay had specialised in floor covering and furniture for most of his working life before he moved to Blenheim in 1995 to be with Kay. While waiting for their qualifications and training to run a small rest home they purchased, Lindsay leased a small shop in Scott Street, the area now leased by Salvation Army. The shop was named Lynfords, derived from Lindsay’s first name and Kay’s maiden name ‘Mugford’. Seven months later Michael Fitzpatrick invited them to lease half of his new premises at 13 Maxwell Road. Lindsay worked alone there for some time, then as the business grew he took on an additional staff member. Kay, who was still working as a laboratory technician at Wairau Hospital, would help do the deliveries at night in an old Bedford truck with Lindsay. “They were fun times, meeting and socialising with customers -

many of whom became friends,” they say. Michael Fitzpatrick’s business was expanding so the decision was made to relocate back to Scott Street. Lynfords Furniture moved into 7 Scott Street and also had a bulk store on Grove Road. Kay eventually left her laboratory job to pursue her other ‘love’ of interior design. The Grove Road store developed into Furniture First in the old auction rooms, an offshoot of Lynfords.

As time went on a recession hit imports so Lindsay and Kay decided to do what retailers do best... retail! “Our Blenheim store had so many Nelson customers so we opened a shop in Richmond,” they say. Kay’s son Hamish was working in the business by then and soon after Lindsay’s sister Linda and his son Shaun joined the staff in Richmond. Kay’s daughter Abbey now works in the Blenheim store as well. “It’s become very much a family business which is something we are

very proud of.” Lynfords Blenheim went on to move into 43 Scott Street in order to have more space for its growing store and the Richmond store moved to Stoke, also for a larger premises. “There’s been a few moves and changes as the stores have grown, but none of this could have been achieved without the support of our customers, many who we now call friends. “It’s been a wonderful 20 years and we plan to continue on as a family business into the future.”

Smart wines with a new look to match. It’s comforting to relax with wines you already know and love. Always delivering a true taste of Marlborough, our wines now have a polished new look. Understated, stylish and tasteful, just perfect over spring and beyond.

Health promotion involves encouraging people to increase awareness of, and improve, their health. It focuses on individual behaviour as well as social and environmental factors that may contribute to a person’s overall health. While there are some factors that affect our health which we have no control over, such as genetics and ageing, there are some positive lifestyle changes we can take ownership of. A healthy, balanced diet and regular physical activity are lifestyle choices we can make to help lower some of the modifiable risks of developing common cancers and chronic conditions such as heart disease and diabetes. Winter is here and with the change in season often comes a change in the way we take care of ourselves. Cold mornings and earlier sunsets means, for a lot of us, that motivation to exercise reduces and food consumption increases. Whether for comfort, warmth or boredom this creates unhealthy habits during winter. We know a balanced diet with a variety of fruits and vegetables and limited saturated fats and sugars is good for us. Remember the healthy food pyramid from school? Fruits and vegetables provide essential vitamins and minerals as well as fibre to keep us fuller for longer, while processed foods provide a lot of calories but offer little in the way of nutrients. Seasonal produce is often cheaper. Examples include apples, oranges, pump-

Healthy on the go snack ideas: • nuts or trail mix (approx. 15 almonds = 1 serve) • fruit • wholegrain crackers with hummus/ pesto/cheese/tomato • vege sticks with hummus • pottle of yoghurt (unsweetened) • unsalted popcorn Exercise ideas in the winter: Indoor swimming, aqua jogging, dancing, pilates, yoga – workout DVDs or YouTube videos are a great way to try these at home.

kin, parsnip, cauliflower and carrots or frozen vegetables. Think about making your plate colourful with a variety of non-processed, non-packaged whole foods. Be aware of portion sizes. The basic plate model guideline suggests half your plate is fruit and vegetables, one quarter lean protein and one quarter carbohydrate. Regular physical activity improves heart health, bone strength and helps you maintain a healthy weight. It can also improve sleep and overall mental health. Aim for 30 minutes of moderate intensity aerobic (cardio) physical activity, five times per week as per Ministry of Health guidelines. Make your nutrition and health a priority this winter and feel the benefits of increased energy levels, improved sleeping pattern, mood and overall wellbeing. Run up and down the stairs. Try jogging or skipping on the spot while you watch TV. Do squats or push ups during ad breaks. When was the last time you tried a new recipe? Anthem singer to headline Celtic concert By Celeste Alexander The iconic sounds of bagpipes and cheerful melodies of Scottish music will make August 14 a day to remember for those attending an up and coming concert organised by the Blenheim & Districts Highland Pipe Band. The concert, titled ‘Celtic in the Kirk’ will be held at the St Andrews Church. This is the second time the Blenheim band has hosted this concert. What will be making this concert unique is the line up of invited guests who will hit the stage with their own special performances. The headline act will be Elin Thomas, Welsh-born Blenheim teacher who was chosen to sing her country’s national anthem at three rugby tests between the All Blacks and Wales last month. Band drum major Alan Kernick says it’s “marvellous” to have Elin headlining the concert. “To see her on television singing, and then

to hear her in person is amazing. She’s a very talented singer and I’m sure most would agree,” he says. Also performing will be one of the band’s youngest players, 12-year-old Kurt Simcic who will be playing the fiddle, as well as a group called ‘Without Strings Attached’. Complementing the music will be dancers from the Marlborough Academy of Dance showcasing both Scottish and Irish dancing. “It’s our hope that the community will come along and enjoy what the concert has to offer. Even if you have Scottish or Celtic ancestry...come along we welcome anyone,” Alan says. The concert starts at 2:30pm and the cost of entry is $15 per adult and $10 per child, sales at the door. Money raised from the concert will go towards the band attending the New Zealand National Pipe Band Championships in March next year.

Green prescriptions get youth moving Green Prescriptions for Active Families are delivering positive results, the Government says. Health Minister Jonathan Coleman says more children and young people taking part in Active Families are seeing the benefits of eating healthy food and being active. “The latest Green Prescription Active Families Survey Report to April 2016 shows 87 per cent of participating families found they had noticed positive changes, including their child or young person having more energy and more confidence, as well as sleeping better. “The lifestyle changes are also being sustained over time for the majority of children and young people which is a great result.” Green Prescription Active Families programmes are community-based initiatives designed to increase physical activity in children and young people aged five to 18, and their family. A survey was carried out earlier this year, and clients from the Marlborough Primary Health Organisation were surveyed as part of the report published this week.

The latest Green Prescription Active Families Survey Report found: • 76 per cent of participating families said their child or youth spent more time being active since their referral, and this increase was sustained over time for three quarters of participants referred last year. • The main changes noted by families included their child or youth having more energy, feeling stronger and fitter, and more confident. Many also noticed their child or youth had lost weight, felt better, and slept better. As of June this year, just over 1,000 children, young people and their families had been referred to the programme. Nearly half of participating children, 46 per cent, were from low income families. Jonathan says the programme helps families make sustainable changes through encouragement, education, nutritional guidance and advice, realistic goal setting and on-going support. “Younger family members may now be referred to the programme through the new Raising Healthy Kids health target which is part of the Government’s Childhood Obesity Plan.”

Speedway sportsperson of the year celebrated By Celeste Alexander The speedway season is currently closed so for local drivers like Gavin Marshall it’s the time where they rebuild motors, chassis and car bodies for the season ahead. Gavin is one of Eastern States Speedway’s stock car drivers and a member of the Eastern States Titans stockcar team. The past 2015/2016 season has been a real highlight for Gavin who has a string of titles under his belt from a full on year of racing. His achievements were recognised at the ESS club’s prize giving ceremony recently where he was named ‘Sportsperson of the Year’ for the past season. Other hard fought battles include the King of the Coast held in Greymouth and the Canterbury Stockcar Champs. The Canterbury Stockcar Championships is a hotly contended event so it was a huge upset when an out-of-town car took the title. There was a field of 28 Christchurch cars and two Blenheim

drivers, although one was from Christchurch racing for the ESS club. “It’s a pretty hard fought title to win especially for an out of towner. I think it was hard to swallow for the Christchurch boys,” he laughs. Being a member of the Eastern States Titans saw Gavin travel with the team to Gisborne for the New Zealand Stockcar Teams Champs in February. This will be the ninth year that Gavin has raced with the Titans. L o ok i ng for wa rd to t he 2016/2017 speedway season, Gavin, like many other club members, is in the process of making some changes to his racing strategy. He is building two new chassis, one of which he plans to race. All the work he does is from his business, Speedworld at the Riverlands Industrial Estate. The stockcar he had built for the past season that featured higher race specifications will be driven by his partner Melissa Gifford.

Club rugby finals

Central is up against Waitohi this weekend in the division one club rugby finals on Saturday, after hard-fought semifinal games last weekend. The division two finals will be between Marlborough Boys’ College Old Boys and Moutere. The division two finalists will meet in the curtain raiser to the division one final on Saturday.

Gymnastics triumph

Local couple Gavin Marshall and Melissa Gifford are looking forward to the up and coming speedway season. Photo by Rebecca Maling. “Mel and I are looking to do more racing in the North Island, so I’m expecting a lot more contact and perhaps some rivalry too,” he laughs.

“There might be a North Island driver that sees a South Island car on the track and thinks ‘I’m gonna hit that guy’, so it should make for some interesting racing,” he says.

Several Marlborough gymnasts made their mark at the Top of the South competition at the Saxton Sports House in Nelson last weekend. T h e s tr o n g M ar lb o r o u g h contingent, spearheaded by former international competitor Anna Tempero who took out the women’s step 10 crown, claimed seven first overall positions and other placings.

Squash club to help stricken member By Cathie Bell A call for donations to help a member of the Marlborough Boys’ College Squash Club whose wife is seriously ill has been met with an ‘outstanding’ response. Bronwyn Brown is organising a squash tournament and auction next weekend to raise money to help club member Chris McMurtrie and his young family after wife Emily Stein was diagnosed with cancer. Chris is a teacher at Marlborough Boys’ College and has taken time off work to be with his family. Bronwyn says the fundraising is being done in two parts – the squash tournament which will be run over three days, and then an auction on Saturday evening. The squash tournament, to be held at the clubrooms on the corner of Scott and Stephenson Streets, is open to anyone whether

they are graded or ungraded, she says. It costs $20 for adults and $10 for juniors, with all proceeds going to Chris. The games will be played on Thursday night for locals, and for away players on Friday and Saturday. There will be eight draws so only three games for each play, she says. After the tournament ends, the auction will be held, Bronwyn says. “People have been very generous and we have had some great donations,” she says. These include $250 from Interislander, return flights to Wellington for two by Soundsair, a $1200 lawnmower from Norwood, and four nights’ accommodation in Queenstown valued at $1800 from the Hawtins. “Now we just need people to show up,” she says.

Knockout Cup in senior men’s football contest It’s knockout cup time for Marlborough Football to close off the season and top seeds Blenheim Valley United sat out with a bye. Rangers City had the biggest score line beating Woodbourne 6-1 in what began as an 8 versus 8 game at the beginning of the 90 minutes. Blenheim Valley Cobras navigated a tricky encounter over Clubs of Marlborough Rangers winning 4-2 as their fitness and youth came to the fore. Central were too good beating Redwood Renegades 5-1 with Steve McCaa scoring a brace. Ben Clarke scored a hatrick for Blenheim Valley Masters as they saw off Trojans 5-2 and Michael Jay scored 4 goals as Central Pirates beat Redwood Masters 6-1.
