Local lads make their mark at national music championships Continued from page 1 The Demon Energy Battle of the Bands National Championships were held in Auckland last weekend. The championships were made up of bands that had won regional finals around the country. Two former Marlborough musicians were competing – Mitch Alderlieste as a soloist, who came through the Wellington regional finals and Sam Edmonds in ‘Ellery Daines’, who came through the Auckland regional finals. He says he was ‘pretty chuffed’ to win. Sam says he was surprised to win as he didn’t feel his performance in the final was the best he’d done. “That was about the fifth time we’d performed in that venue. The first one was all right, the next two I felt really strong, but I actually thought at the grand final, it probably wasn’t my best performance, I felt a bit discouraged, I might have let the team down. “It was quite a surprise when they said I was best drummer.” He has been playing drums for the band ‘Ellery Daines’ for about 10

months. It’s named after the singersongwriter who leads it, and who Sam taught drums in Nelson when they both lived there. “It’s cool to be recording music with him now.” The two of them also play in another band ‘Paper City’ with another musician they knew in Nelson who also moved to Auckland.

Sam went to Linkwater School, and Queen Charlotte College, where he was a part of successful local band, “Recommended by Your Mom”. He went on to study Contemporary Music at the Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology in Nelson, and is a part of “Little Oceans” who have been awarded a total of four NZ On Air recording grants, and whose latest

single, “Peace” has had over 250,000 plays on Spotify. With the three bands, Sam says he has ‘got right back into the drumming’ and he loves performing. “We have a few things lined up. We’re recording a music video this weekend.” Mitch Alderliest was also in the grand finals last weekend and performed as the only solo act in the Demon Energy Battle of the Bands National Championship in Auckland. He says it was ‘a massive weekend’. “What a massive weekend it has been. I didn’t place but I am pretty happy to walk away with the title of being the only solo act at the national finals!” He thanked all his hometown supporters. “It’s great to know I have a force like you backing me all the way. You’re awesome.” Mitch left Blenheim last year for Wellington to pursue music as both a band member and acoustic soloist. Next on Mitch’s agenda is to complete his debut EP which he hopes to release later in the year.

Rare wine sought Story and photo by Cathie Bell Fromm Winery is celebrating its 25th vintage this year, but the star guest may not be able to put in much of an appearance. The release of the 1994 Fromm pinot noir reserve put the winery on the map, general manager William Hoare says. But the winery only has three bottles of it left in its cellar, so people are being asked to look at their own cellars and if they have that wine, Fromm would be ‘very interested’ in buying it back.

Master of Wine Bob Campbell wrote that the ‘best New Zealand Pinot Noir I have ever tasted’ is Fromm La Strada 1994 Pinot Noir Reserve, en Magnum. “The wine was glorious. As we sat in stunned silence we could hear the faint notes of a celestial choir singing the Hallelujah chorus.” Winemaker Hätsch Kalberer says they knew the wine was good when it was made, but not quite how good it was. “It’s got better with age.”

The first crop from the Fromm vines, it demonstrated how good the variety could be in Marlborough, he says. “Often the first crop makes extraordinary wine. They’re often something quite special.” He and William tried the wine last year and say it is still drinking well. “It’s amazing, sometimes you have a wine, you think they’re really good, good for 10 years, but Fromm Winery winemaker Hätsch Kalberer with they just continue to surprise again the 1994 pinot noir reserve that put the winery and again when you open them.” on the map.

Speed limit still being ignored by motorists By Celeste Alexander Earlier in the year Havelock woman Selena Robbins spoke to The Sun about her concern that drivers were refusing to slow down when passing a stopped school bus. The speed limit is 20km/h when passing school buses that are stopped to drop off or pick up children. The rule applies whichever direction motorists are travelling in. Selena and her family live on a rural property along State Highway 6 between Okaramio and Havelock. Two of her children attend Havelock School and catch the bus from a nearby bus stop located on the side of the highway. Out of frustration she begun filming motorists last year as they sped past the school bus that was collecting her children and posted onto Facebook to help create an awareness. Five months later and now that term three of schooling has begun, The Sun checked back in with Selena to see if she hasnoticed a difference in driver behaviour. “After I went public about motorists ignoring the 20km/h rule there were a couple of good weeks where people were slowing down. Particularly on the same side of the road that the bus had stopped on, whereas the opposite not so much. “Now I would have to say there hasn’t been anymore change. A few are slowing down but not everyone, as they should be, which is really worrying. “What is it going to take for people to get it... a child to be hit and killed?”

Candidates start Councillors Jenny Andrews and Trevor Hook have filed nominations for the October council elections. Jenny joins Brian Dawson as a candidate for the Blenheim ward, and Trevor joins David Oddie as a candidate in the Marlborough Sounds ward. Brian is also standing as mayor. People interested in standing for the Marlborough District Council or as mayor have until noon on August 12 to put their names forward for election.

Lifeline Marlborough closing Lifeline Marlborough will take its last calls on Friday, as the national organisation is losing funding and is closing branches. All calls will now be answered from the Waikato and Christchurch.

Correction There were 290 delegates from the Quarry and Aggregate Association who had their conference lunch as the first event held in the new World War II extension at the Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre, not 400 as reported last week.

This school bus stop on State Highway 6 near Havelock is one motorists are speeding past. Photo provided.

Selena chooses to continue driving her children to the bus stop for the two days a week they travel on it and says she will continue to video speeding motorists. “Sometimes people look at me and anchor up big time, but the majority just don’t get it.” Recently Selena found herself in the driver’s seat witnessing the ignorance of drivers travelling past a stopped school bus. “I had slowed down to pass a bus but the driver behind me got frustrated and abused me when I slowed and then overtook me. “It just shocked me that they would behave like this,” she says.

Rural Women New Zealand are advocates for safer rural roads. National president Wendy McGowan says drivers need to pay attention to the speed limit whether they are in rural areas or passing urban based primary schools. “Rural children are especially vulnerable when drivers speed past school buses, and children have been involved in a number of serious and fatal crashes. “Please slow down around schools and in communities. “Obey the speed limit when passing a stopped bus and even get the family involved in teaching

children road safety messages,” she says. Highway patrol team leader sergeant Barrie Greenall says “children will make mistakes, we can’t change that, but the outcome is governed by the speed of the vehicle so please be aware.” “We try to get through to people that when you are travelling on an open road the average thinking time is two point five seconds by the time you see and realise you need to react. By then it’s too late at high speed. “Be aware of the buses out there, be aware of children and the risk you pose to them,” he says.

Sounds could be pest-free area By Cathie Bell The Government’s plan to step up predator control work could be good for Picton and the Marlborough Sounds, a local conservationist says. James Wilson, a Picton Dawn Chorus spokesman, says the announcement fits well with the work being done and plans local groups have to build on the success of the Kaipupu Point Wildlife Sanctuary near Picton. Prime Minister John Key launched ‘Predator Free NZ 2050’ on Monday, with an initial $28 million for the programme, which will see public, private, iwi and community sectors working together to help protect our native species. Kaikoura MP Stuart Smith says local conservation projects could be in for a major boost with the launch of Predator Free NZ 2050. “This is a ground-breaking initiative and the most ambitious conservation project attempted anywhere in the world,” he says. “Making New Zealand predator free by 2050 will rely on the Government working with local communities to tackle introduced predators and the havoc they wreak for native species. “A new Government company, Predator Free New Zealand Ltd, will sponsor community partnerships around the country, giving local conservation groups and pest eradication initiatives the opportunity to receive support for their programmes.” The programme will bring together the resources of the Department of Conservation and the Ministry for Primary Industries to work in partnership with local communities.

“Our native birds and plants are a central part of our national identity and are a real source of local pride. They also contribute to New Zealand’s beautiful environment, which is a cornerstone of our reputation. “However, introduced predators such as rats, stoats and possums are putting these creatures and plants in serious jeopardy. They kill around 25 million native birds every year, so eliminating them will provide a huge boost for our environment. “Ridding New Zealand of predators is also expected to provide major benefits for New Zealand’s farming, research and technology sectors.” As all the technology to achieve a predatorfree New Zealand doesn’t yet exist, scientific development will play a key role in the programme. Meanwhile, possums and ferrets are main carriers of the destructive disease bovine TB, so eradicating them will provide a boost for cattle and deer farmers. “The programme is about harnessing the strength of local communities to achieve a predator-free country, so I urge everyone who’s keen to help achieve the goal to get involved,” Stuart says.

Children’s librarian Tracey McKean and Emily Fredrickson, in the new space.

Kids’ space opens Story and photo by Cathie Bell The children’s library space upstairs at the Blenheim District Library re-opens tomorrow and staff hope children and their families will enjoy the new space. The upstairs floor, where the children’s library is, has been closed since Easter for about $500,000 of essential earthquake strengthening and partial roof replacement. With the work now completed, the children’s library is moving back upstairs into a renovated space with huge amounts of natural light. It opens again at tomorrow at 9am. Children’s librarian Tracey McKean says the children’s space is closed today as the books and furniture are returned to upstairs. The children’s books have been temporarily housed in the main library downstairs during the renovation work. The library is trying to arrange the upstairs

area to have some places to encourage children to stay and read something while they’re at the library, Tracey says. “We’re making it a place to visit, stay, and enjoy while you’re here. It’s not just come and grab something and go.” There is wifi in the children’s library, but books are still the key thing, she says. The space is now flooded with natural light through big windows. The windows have ‘portholes’ at different heights for children to look out at the view. “This is one of the few buildings you can get up and see the view from,” Tracey says. “The sunsets are amazing.” She says they hope to see new library members coming in with their families. “We want to support families with their reading, spend time with them, help them find a book that interests them at the level that is appropriate for them.”

Demolition starts Demolition has begun on the old buildings that used to house Blenheim’s dairy factory and Apex Meats. Theatre project Pest Free NZ

Dear Ed, I have had reason to visit the Blenheim Winz office on several occasions over the past few weeks. A big thank you to you all. From the security lady who greets you with a smile and cheery hello, to the ladies on the desk who have been courteous and helpful. I am always hearing it is not a helpful place to go to. Well, I disagree. You have all been great. Thank you. A satisfied customer.

Dear Ed, Well, well, well. Don Coyote last week, took the words right out of my mouth about the theatre. The issue with the theatre is not about its quality, it is about the lack of governance, accountability and transparency. The lackings of those three points has led to a huge overrun in costs allied with poor planning and siting leading to traffic congestion and danger. The costing and siting are the things to focus on. Who was responsible? No one wants to own up. What next project will MDC (council and staff all under the spotlight) cock up? Percy Parker Correspondence on this issue is now closed. Ed.

SLOOOW Computer!!!

Are you for ever waiting for things to happen? Yes, computers do slow down over time, this is quite natural and the good news is that it can be remedied. Just like a car computers need a certain amount of maintenance which if not done will lead to “slooow computer” syndrome. If you have recently had ultrafast broadband installed and things aren’t happening as fast as you think they should let us give your computer a good service and clean out, even if you are still on ordinary broadband your computer will thank you for it.

Dear Ed, The just announced “Predator Free NZ” announced by the prime minister and Conservation Minister and PM lap-dog Maggie Barry is futile and destructive. Ms Barry in announcing the grand plan, made several wrong statements showing her knowledge is sketchy. Rats have been in NZ for just 200 years. She’s wrong, kiore rats were brought by Maori settlers. Possums she declared are fast breeders. Wrong. They mostly have one young a year. What’s more she does not understand predators are part of the natural food chain. Will Maggie as part of “predator free” eradicate moreporks and falcons? Meanwhile coming to countryside near you soon-1080 poison. Frederick Avianus Abridged

Locals line up for awards at Top of South Building Show By Cathie Bell Blenheim-based building companies took away a swathe of awards at the Nelson Marlborough West Coast Registered Master Builders 2016 House of the Year competition. The regional results were announced last weekend at an event in Nelson. The winning builds were celebrated by members of the Nelson, Marlborough & West Coast Registered Master Builders Association and members of the local construction industry. There were eight gold award winners from Marlborough, Nelson, and the West Coast which will now be judged against gold award winners from around the country to find the National Gold Reserve finalists. National category winners and the Registered Master Builders Supreme Awards for the 2016 House of the Year and Renovation of the Year will be announced at a gala dinner on 26 November in Auckland. George Guthrie Construction won a gold award and were the category winner for a Blenheim house in the Renovation Award $250,000 -

$500,000 category. Jennian Homes Nelson Bays Limited won a bronze award in the same category for a Blenheim house. Judges called the winning Blenheim renovation ‘a clever architectural transformation’ and an ‘overwhelming credit deserved to the builder, architect and artistic home owner’. “This renovation converted an existing 1970’s double garage into an art studio, attached to a fully functional one bedroom contemporary home for the live-in artist. “A clever use of materials showed that the budget didn’t limit quality, form or function. The use of recycled rimu vertical boarding, staggered painted brick veneer, sharp black aluminium, joinery and a cleverly angled sloping roof provides the basis for this striking transformation. This was an extremely well-crafted renovation, with attention paid to the small details.” Blenheim-based Peter Ray Homes won a silver award for a Blenheim house in the New Home $650,000 - $1 million category. Marlborough-based Lawson Homes won a gold award in the

New Home $650,000 - $1 million category for a house in St Arnaud. Lawson Homes also won two Lifestyle Awards for their St Arnaud project, winning the Heart of the Home Kitchen Award and the Plumbing World Bathroom Excellence Award. They also won a gold award for a Marlborough house in the New Home over $2 million category. Nelson-based Harris Builders won five regional awards with a Nelson home, including the Nelson Marlborough West Coast Registered Master Builders 2016 Supreme House of the Year, a Gold Award and Category win for the New Home over $2 million award. The company also won the Craftsmanship Award and the Outdoor Living Award for the same property. Judges said the winning Nelson home encompassed great attention to detail and workmanship creating an outstanding family home and studio. “Positioned in the middle of a vineyard, this home stretches elegantly along the hillside with its 60 metre frontage absorbing the expansive view. “The architect’s complex design

required supreme accuracy. “The build featured an extensive amount of concrete work and concealed steel structures which supported the floating cantilevered roof structures and fully glazed windows. “The heavily detailed bespoke

interior features add to the complexity of the build.” The Awards are made possible through the support of PlaceMakers, Master Build Services, GIB, Nulook, Future-Proof Building, Carters, Plumbing World, Resene and Bunnings Trade.

Tall tales, and true Peter Anderson is half of the vet-turned-author duo which has just published their second book, ‘Old Dogs, New Tricks’. He talks to Cathie Bell at the book’s launch. Veterinary medicine and its practice has changed immensely over the past 40 years. Marlborough man Peter Anderson and his friend and business partner Peter Jerram have been at the forefront of many of those changes, and they talk about those changes, sharing the funny and often poignant stories of clients and their animals in their books. The second book collecting their stories, ‘Old Dogs, New Tricks’, has just been published, and was launched last Friday evening. The way Peter Anderson talks, he’s a reluctant author. “It was Peter Jerram really. He’s the one who was quite keen. Random House also approached us and were quite keen to do a followup. Peter Jerram was keen, I was hesitant. I finally had my arm twisted.” Their first book together, ‘Cock and Bull Stories’, ‘did sell quite well and is still trickling out’, Peter says. Both books draw on the two Peters’ decades of experience working as vets in Marlborough. Peter says that while he’s out of clinical practice now, he is still doing consultancy and advisory work. “I’m working with three generations on the same property. I started with the grandfather, I spent most of my life with my generation on the farm, and now the sons are there. “It’s great. I almost know aspects of their property better than they do sometimes. I certainly do around the animal health issues.” During the past 40 years, Peter says veterinary medicine has

changed hugely. “When we started off, it was very much James Herriot visits – patch up jobs all the time, fixing things when they were broken, solving a few problems.” Then there was the 1980s, a ‘very exciting time with everybody trying different things’, he says. “There was all the different farmings – fitch, angora rabbits… even people in urban areas got involved, people with a couple of acres put up deer fences.” The Peters got into things such as embryo transfers, but then the sharemarket crashed and everything toughened up, Peter says. “To survive, farming had to become very lean and mean. That’s where our role became pretty important, helping farmers improve performance and production and to be more efficient. “That’s where I see rural vets in the future, it lies not so much in the patch-up jobs but in helping the farmers be more successful.” He’s seen ‘huge change’ in those 40 years of practising in Marlborough, he says. “The Wairau Plains provided us with a lot of work – a lot of local small studs, beef, dairy and sheep, they provided a lot of work. “It’s all grapes now.” The small animal care side has changed too, he says, from patchup jobs to very niche specialised work now. “When we started, we had to do everything, for everybody. Today, there are not many generalists left.” It used to be much more physi-

Peter Anderson, who has published a second book about his life as a vet, with Peter Jerram.

cally demanding too – sometimes manually pregnancy testing 1000 cows a day was very demanding, Peter says. “But now, it’s all scanning electronically. Times have moved.” While the work has changed, some things haven’t – Peter says he still does ‘quite a bit of flying’ to

work around the country, particularly round the South Island and it ‘saves a lot of time’. “It gives me a thrill too.” Some of the book’s stories tell of hair-raising flights – or actually, the landings – in the Marlborough Sounds. Peter says the Sounds can be

‘tricky flying’. “I think I’m very lucky to be an old pilot.” • Peter Anderson and Peter Jerram will be talking about their book at 10.30am on Saturday morning at the Blenheim Club as part of the Marlborough Book Festival.

Spruce-up for Sheps Park Some hefty macrocarpa tree trunks provide an unstructured playground space at Sheps Park in Springlands. The tree trunks were brought in from a Marlborough Sounds farm. They’re in keeping with the rustic and natural look of the recreational reserve. Council Reserves and amenities officer Robert Hutchinson says Sheps Park is a bit different to other council parks. “It’s a departure from our traditional parks and playgrounds – in keeping with the wishes of the couple who donated the land and the surrounding community who have been closely involved in its development.” The Severne Street land was a public

gift from the late Joy Shepherd who lived there with her husband Lloyd for many years. It is owned and protected by the Queen Elizabeth II Trust which has vested responsibility for it with the district council. Many of the original trees and shrubs have been retained, supplemented with community planting days where natives have been added. New paths will be laid soon. The play area is in the south west corner of the 2.7 hectare park, near to where the Shepherds’ home once stood.

All-rounder a top pick for book festival presenter By Cathie Bell The Marlborough Book Festival, on this weekend, offers the chance to get the ‘inside story’ from the man who wrote both All Blacks captain Richie McCaw’s and Black Caps captain Brendon McCullum’s biographies. Greg McGee has written books, plays and television and film scripts over the course of his career. His book Richie McCaw, Open Side published in 2012 was so popular it’s now hard to track down a copy, and he’s just finished writing the biography of Brendon McCullum. Marlborough journalist and self-professed rugby nut Tessa Nicholson will interview Greg at two one-hour sessions – one at Spy Valley Wines cellar door on Saturday 30 July

and one at the Blenheim Club on Sunday 31 July. “The Saturday session is very much sport orientated, given Greg was an All Black triallist, who went on to write Foreskin’s Lament - a game changer for New Zealand theatre - and he wrote the biography of our most famous All Blacks ever. “On top of that he has also just completed the biography of cricketing great, Brendan McCullum, which is due out at Christmas. “He has a wonderful sense of humour and is a story teller extraordinaire, so I can’t wait.” At the Sunday session, Tessa and Greg will talk about his latest novel The Antipodeans. Tessa says this is one of her ‘books of the year.’ “It is quite a stunner. Set in Italy, it flicks between two time zones: World War II when

FERGUS

two Kiwi soldiers are on the run from the Germans who have taken over Italy, and 2014, when a young woman struggles to find herself after the death of her father. “There is a lot of poignancy in this story, especially when it comes to how soldiers coped when they returned home after the war. Greg’s dad was one of those, and this is an area he is keen to discuss.” The sessions last for one hour, and there is time for questions from the audience at the end and a chance to have books signed by the man himself. “There are so many amazing writers coming to this year’s festival, it is hard to choose which to go to see. “But for me, Greg McGee is going to be a major highlight,” Tessa says.

BE IN TO WIN with The Marlborough Book Festival and The Sun

Up for grabs is a double pass for Saturday to hear Greg McGee talk about his work which ranges from both All Blacks captain Richie McCaw’s and Black Caps captain Brendon McCullum’s biographies to groundbreaking play Foreskin's Lament. He has a new novel out now, The Antipodeans. Also on offer is a copy of Charlotte Grimshaw’s novel Starlight Peninsula. Charlotte is also speaking at the festival this weekend.

Baby shower themes Here is a list of ideas for different themes that you can adapt to suit your baby shower. Colour theme Pink for girls and blue for boys are classic baby shower themes, but of course they will only be appropriate if the new mum knows the gender of her baby and is happy for everyone else to know it too. Spark it up a bit by adding a second colour: perhaps blue and white? Or pink and gold? Teddy bear theme This is a gender-neutral theme with lots of cute possiblities. Have teddy bears on the invitations and teddy bear decorations. Tie pink or blue bows on your teddy bears if you want to let people know the gender of the baby. Food ideas can include using tiny teddy biscuits to decorate cakes or slices, or making bear-shaped pastries. Farmyard, Noah’s Ark or zoo theme Animal themes are lots of fun and are gender-neutral. Using a farmyard, Ark or zoo theme also gives a range of animals for guests to choose from if they are stuck for ideas!

Princess theme If you know that a baby girl is expected, this can be a nice theme. Toy tiaras, lots of pink satin and bows and plenty of glitter will help make this baby shower a right royal occasion.

Train theme This is a good one if your new parents are expecting a little boy. Invitations and decorations can use generic train pictures or you can use a character like Thomas the Tank Engine. A large enough toy train carriage can even make a useful platter to serve food. Children’s book theme This idea can open the baby shower up to a really wide range of possibilities! Use characters from nursery rhymes or favourite children’s books for invitations and decorations. ABC blocks theme Another good gender-neutral theme, having little building blocks with letters and numbers scattered around can make for a great decorative touch, plus the blocks can be gathered together for a nice present for baby at the end of the party. Rubber ducky theme Inexpensive rubber ducks make colourful and fun decorations, and you can stretch the duck idea by continuing with a yellow theme through your food and games as well.

2016 of the year Clubs of Marlborough | Saturday 30 July, 2016

Stage set for brides Shoes, makeup, hair and wedding gowns will be just a few of the things on show this Saturday when 15 brides take to the stage for the Beavertown Blenheim Lions Bride of the Year Show for 2016. The show is a sellout with all 200 tickets having been sold already and with a prize pool of around $8000, the brides taking part have much to look forward to. The organising committee has been working behind the scenes to pull together several elements for the show, including an array of amazing prizes, a silent auction, show entertainment and of course the showstopping brides. Committee spokesperson Noeline Stewart says a lot of

hard work has gone into this years show but without the ‘incredible’ support of sponsors and local businesses, “we wouldn’t have a show”. “We are so lucky to have the continued support of local businesses and sponsors who very generously donate quality items and services as prizes for the show. “This year we put the tickets up for sale early and to our delight they sold out two weeks before the show. Thank you to everyone who has supported the show and we hope the audience enjoys the evening,” she says. This year St John Ambulance and the Marlborough Stroke Club will benefit from proceeds raised from the show.

Winter Warmth 2016 Don’t be shocked by blankets this winter Can a cheap or old one do the trick? This is a question people ask themselves as they dust off their old electric blanket to use during winter. As the weather turns colder, many people use electric blankets to add a little extra warmth and comfort on a winter night. Using an electric blanket is often a less expensive alternative to cranking up the heat or using a space heater. Although it is economical and convenient, you may wonder if electric blankets pose any health and safety concerns. One of the main safety concerns involving electric blankets is the possibility of it becoming a fire hazard. Most electric blanket fires are related to bad cords or overheating and igniting materials nearby. Using blankets properly greatly reduces the risk of fires. Broken cords may not only lead to a fire, but can cause a shock. Avoid using any electric blanket with a

Faulty electric blankets can cause devastating house fires.

broken or exposed cord. Tips for Safe Use Most fires, shocks and burns associated with electric blanket use are due to user mistakes or old blankets.

The best way to avoid problems when using an electric blanket is by following directions. Tips for safe use include the following: Don’t roll or crumble the blanket. Rolling an electrical blanket may cause the coils to

become damaged, which can lead to electrical fires. Never wash an electric blanket. Washing an electrical blanket can cause damage to the internal coils and it may also lead to a shock. Make sure it is approved by a reputable testing agency. Only use electric blankets, which have passed testing by an agency. Avoid putting other blankets on top of electric blankets. An electric blanket can overheat if additional items, such as blankets or stuffed animals are placed over it. Turn off an electric blanket when it is not in use. Although some models of blankets may have a shut off control if it gets too hot, others don’t. Shutting off the blanket when it is not being used is the safest way to prevent overheating. The bottom line is electric blankets are safe for most people to use as long as they follow the manufacturer’s recommendations. Improper use is usually one of the biggest risks for injuries or dangers, such as burns, shocks or fires.

So you have a warm, insulated home and have taken all the necessary steps to create a healthy environment for your family, well done! The only thing left to do is make sure you ensure your young children, and even elderly members of the family, dress warmly when venturing outside. While snow, wind, rain and frost can leave your teeth chattering, spare a thought for infants and children. Dress infants and children warmly for outdoor activities. Several thin layers will keep them dry and warm. Don’t forget warm boots, gloves or mittens, and a hat. The rule of thumb for older babies and young children is to dress them in one more layer of clothing than an adult would wear in the same conditions.

Winter Warmth 2016

Be efficient with hot water this winter Heating water is expensive, so using less hot water has a big impact on your energy bills. Use an efficient showerhead - it still gives you a great shower, but uses much less water. To check the flow rate of your shower, put a 10 litre bucket under the shower - if it fills in less than a minute, your showerhead is wasting water. An efficient showerhead has a flow rate of 9 litres per minute, or less. Reduce shower time - a 15 minute shower costs around $1, a five minute shower around 33c. A family of four could be saving around $18 a week just by taking

shorter showers. That’s $900 a year. Use cold washes - unless you have an especially dirty load. Modern

Appliance energy saving tips

washing machines and detergents clean well using cold water. A hot water wash uses 90 per cent more electricity than a cold wash.

Standby power Appliances left on standby can cost you more than $100 a year on your power bills. Major culprits are home entertainment appliances, like TVs, stereos, game consoles and computer equipment. Plug them all into multi-plug boards so they can all be turned off properly at the same time. Turn off other appliances like whiteware at the wall too. Heated towel rails If you have a heated towel rail, only use it when needed.

By having it on for four hours a day rather than all the time, you could save $130 a year. You can buy timers for towel rails that come on automatically at certain times of the day. Fridges If you have a second fridge only to chill a few drinks, it could cost you $200 a year to run if it’s an old, inefficient model. Consider turning it off or getting rid of it. Check your fridge door seals - if the door doesn’t seal properly, your fridge will use more energy than it needs to.

Saves up to 8 times more energy than it costs to run. 6. Reduce greenhouse gas *WARNING - don’t be fooled by imitations! A genuine Heat Recovery Ventilator must have three components; emissions by recycling energy. 1. A supply fan 2. An exhaust fan 3. An energy exchanger. Otherwise it’s not a Heat Recovery Ventilator!

Club rugby finals

Central and Moutere were the winners in the club rugby finals last weekend. Central beat Waitohi to take out the division one club rugby finals and Moutere beat Marlborough College Old Boys to take out the division two finals in games at Lansdowne Park.

Marlborough Hockey’s school holiday programme with junior Black Sticks Rachel McCann and David Brydon was popular. Pictured right is the under-10 year-old group.

Holiday hockey a winner

While both players are from Christchurch, David says he has family here and visits a bit and Rachel says she was here last November when the Black Sticks played the Argentinian women’s team. “They must have enjoyed it – the Argentinian flag’s still flying,” she laughs. Playing for New Zealand in Blenheim was great, Rachel says. “It was amazing, there were so

many people here. The support was awesome.” They said they ran a few trials for the children on the holiday programme, played a few games and passed on some tips. “We’re keeping it simple, keeping it fun,” Rachel says. “There’s a buzz around hockey

after last year’s matches and that’s what we want.” Mark was in Blenheim for a week, coaching players at all levels and running the school holiday programme. The under-10s were in the morning, and over-10s in the afternoon all week.

Knock-out football cup continues In knockout cup time for Marlborough Football, it was an admirable effort from Rangers United to hold off Blenheim Valley United for 64 minutes, until the floodgates opened with United finishing strongly to win 5-0. Similarly in the Central Pirates, Rangers Masters game with a 1 all score line at half time turning into a rout in the second half, with Pirates winning 8-1. Blenheim Valley Masters muscled their way past club mates Cobras and won 2-1 while the other game provided a narrow upset with Rangers City beating Central in a high scoring match 5-4. In the knock out shield Picton Crow Tavern beat Wadsco Trucks Redwood Masters 3-2. Woodbourne tipped up Redwood Ren-

egades 2-1 and Clubs of Marlborough Rangers crunched there way to a 1 nil victory over Trojans. Next week sees favorites Blenheim Valley United take on Central Pirates at A&P Park while Blenheim Valley Masters front up to Rangers City in the other knockout cup semifinal at the same venue.

ables given that the competition is so close. Variables such as weather, road position, strategy on the day and preparation are all vital. “It’s fair to say we give it 110 per cent at every event we go in order to keep building towards our ultimate goal.” The rally’s route is significantly changed and Kennard says that as usual with new notes, ‘you have to work harder at ensuring the linking’ is done well. “Luckily, as Finland is a relatively smooth rally, there’s not so much tidying of notes required, so it gives us the time we need to work on this with the recce videos.” Based in the university town of Jyväskylä, the rally draws huge crowds with its classic, smooth, high speed gravel stages and massive jumps.

Kiwi rally stars Hayden Paddon and John Kennard head to Rally Finland this week expecting the competition to be close at the front of the field. Making their seventh appearance together on the rally dubbed the Finnish Grand Prix, due to its high speeds, Paddon says it’s the event that feels most like home in terms of the roads and the country. “The atmosphere in Finland is also incredible and that makes it an unforgettable rally to be part of,” says the Hyundai Motorsport driver, the only New Zealander with a full-time drive in the FIA
