Fifteen beautiful brides took to the stage on Saturday night for the Beavertown Blenheim Lions Bride of the Year show, wowing the judges and audience. By the end of the night, the top three place winners had been chosen and by coincidence it happened to be three friends. Kimberly McCabe was crowned the 2016 Bride of the Year winner, cheered on by husband Stephen and her family who gathered for the event.

23 Henry Street, Blenheim * Study conducted at the University of Northern Colorado, 2015, examined the effectiveness of the new features of this hearing aid by collecting and analysing ongoing EEG data while subjects performed speech testing. For both hearing aid features SpeechMaster and EchoShield, the objective brain behaviour measures revealed a significant reduction in listening effort when the feature was activated. Two clinical studies have shown that this hearing aid provides better than normal hearing in certain demanding environments (University of Northern Colorado, 2014; Oldenburg Hörzentrum, 2013). Continued from page 1 In second place was Taylor Green and in third Emma O’Sullivan. The three friends each wore huge smiles when their names were called out including Kimberly who says she had never anticipated winning. “I didn’t know what I thought when my name was called out... I was stunned. I looked to my husband and family and could see they were cheering and really happy,” she says. Kimberly, who is originally from Marlborough, lives in Windwhistle and works as a preschool teacher in Darfield. The 26-year-old has been with her farmer husband for 10 years, marrying in March of this year, just two weeks

shy of their anniversary. “Coming back for the show was so much fun and there was so much support from family. The girls were all really nice and we had so much fun,” she says. The show’s other prize winners were: Mrs Photogenic, Roberta Harris Mrs Personality, Stacey Scollard Lucky Bride, Celeste Alexander Bridal shoes winner, Emma O’Sullivan. Convenor Noeline Stewart says the show was another fantastic success with around $11,500 raised which will be shared between the Marlborough Stroke Club and

St John. “I have had wonderful feedback from the show and I would like to thank the judges and MCs for giving up their time for the event. “The judges were impressed by the high standard and how the brides presented themselves and commented on the variance in different gown styles from simple to intricate. “They felt the three winning brides were all quite different and stood out in their own ways. “The brides had a great time backstage, we could hear lots of laughter and I’m sure they have made some new friends. I hope their husbands were proud of them because they

were all beautiful brides, and all winners in my eyes,” she says. The silent auction “exceeded expectations” as well as the raffle which had been running

for three weeks prior. Those who attended were treated to a Tuscany-themed decor designed by committee member Colleen Bush with the help of the committee.

Don gets sneak preview of the tunes Story and photo by Cathie Bell Havelock’s Theatre Group is about to perform another musical play, and some of the cast took time to make sure the play’s author is happy with their performance. Don Edwards wrote ‘Once a Happy Cowboy’, which was performed in Havelock in 2004. He now lives in the Oaks at the Ashwood Park retirement home, and his wife Gillian organised cast members Hans Neilson and Anna Logan to visit on Friday to sing some of the show’s numbers as a birthday treat. Gillian is also the show’s co-director, with Jennie Johnson. Hans and Anna say they were delighted to be able to perform for Don and the other residents. Don says it is ‘absolutely’ lovely the play is being staged again. He says it was ‘a whirl’ to have Hans and Anna in to sing. “It’s hard to believe, it’s show business, that’s show business.” Gillian says Don is the ‘father’ of the Havelock Theatre Group, he founded it in 1999. “He’s written about 10 or 12 plays all together. The Havelock Theatre Group put on ‘Once a Happy Cowboy’ in 2004. “We decided to revisit it so we’re putting it on again, as we think the audience has changed, and the cast has changed.” “Because it’s Don’s birthday, we thought it would be nice to come in and do a little excerpt from the play for his birthday and his fellow residents.” Gillian says Hans, who plays the cowboy, is a ‘very talented’ musician and Anna has a ‘lovely’ singing voice and was a ‘great actress’. “All the cast are doing a fantastic job.” ‘Once a Happy Cowboy’ is described by the Havelock Theatre group as ‘a black comedy with lots of music and action’. Its opening night is on Thursday August 18, at 7.30pm. Other performances are: Friday August 19, at 7.30pm; Saturday August 20, at 7.30pm; Sunday August 21 at 4pm; Thursday August 25 at 7.30pm; Friday August 26 at 7.30pm; and the final show is on Saturday August 27 at 7.30pm.

Housing boost The income cap on the Government’s KiwiSaver Homestart scheme increases to $85,000 for a single person and to $130,000 for a couple, and the house price cap increases to $400,000 for an existing house and $450,000 for a new home in Marlborough, Kaikoura MP Stuart Smith says. The scheme helped 207 buyers in Marlborough into their first home, with grants worth $893,000.

The event last Thursday, organised by the New Zealand Book Council, had four authors Charlotte Grimshaw, Gavin Bishop, Donovan Bixley, and Greg McGee, speaking to students from around Marlborough about their best tips for writing.

Organiser Kate Harper says that, following a school ski trip last year, she realised there were children unable to attend because of the cost. She immediately began to think of a fundraiser to ensure that didn’t happen again. “Having a Rio-themed ball to celebrate the Olympics seemed the perfect way to do that.” She says the ball is an opportunity for people to shake off their winter woollies and pull on something more glamorous for an evening of fun. “We’ve got some people coming in masquerade, others dressing in Olympic theme, and some threatening to arrive in Rio Carnival outfits.”

Sun readers have their say... with the WORD on the Street. Q: Is banning scallop harvesting in the Sounds a good idea?

Adrian Withers Blenheim Bit of a break is good, it’s been coming under increasing pressure for a while now so a ban won’t do any harm.

Marty Morgan Blenheim Yes it is a very good idea! It needed to happen! People are too greedy. I’ve always been a fan of conserving what we have! Take only what you need!

Max George Blenheim Scallops are way too cheap for such a special product. The ban is needed for a year or two. Commercial catch should be much less.

Dear Ed, In answer to the letter by David Bull, it’s not about whether it is good or bad or somewhere in between, its about the public’s right to choose, and the right to NOT be medicated against our will. I will concede that to argue without the facts is a stupidity, but that also is not the point. If you wish to have that poison, add it yourself, use fluoride toothpaste etc. Don’t arbitrarily make decisions for us please. We, as a people, are able to make our own minds up as to what poisons we want. That is the point. Keep your poisons out of my children’s untainted water. of accommodation and work force problems for the wine industry. Isn’t this an indication that we have too many vineyards in the province and the potential to flood the market again? I have lived in the Wairau Valley all my life. We have three perfectly good houses getting mown down in a row, just to make way for a few more rows of grapes. These are good houses that could help with accommodation. Many good productive farms are being ruined. The whole valley has become a bloody mess with thousands of trees and wind breaks bulldozed and burned. I think its time the whole greedy wine industry took a look at what they are doing to our province. Money grubbing outsiders with no regards for anything other than profits are ruining our valley. A whale of a tale from local fisherman Sounds identity Dave Baker of Waikawa is a hugely experienced seaman and paua fisher. He talks to Glenise Dreaver about his work with local marine organisations. Last week, Dave Baker turned up at a Papatuanuku meeting after a very long day that had included a very, very close encounter with two humpbacks. Board members heard their usually imperturbable chairman describe a trip in his paua fishing vessel First Light. He and three crew members were heading north to Perano Head, searching for clear diving water. Son Jason was helmsman with crew members Nigel and Geoff Lang also aboard when two humpbacks blew just ahead. “We reduced speed, keeping the required 200m away. They were on a similar track to us, but further inshore,” Dave says. “We’d seen migratory humpbacks before, always on a straight track, so kept looking ahead.” Mistake. The 10-12 metre long beasts did the totally unexpected. “They tracked back, surfacing from right underneath us on the port side, one midships and one near the stern.” Jason immediately put the engine out of gear, neutralising the propeller, then ducked right over in the wheelhouse, expecting a fluke through the window. “Shivers” (or a similar-sounding word) was his mild response given that the twelve metre First Light weighs 10 tonnes to each whale’s 30-40. If they’d hit, it could have meant big trouble. The whales then disappeared. After an unsuccessful search for clear water First Light headed south, the crew still awestruck. “We kept far offshore and slow. And

with a close lookout!” Dave says. Dave’s seagoing career has had other dramatic moments, not least a recent urgent medivac to Endeavour Inlet in the new Bluebridge Rescue craft. It proved a test of courage and determination for all nine aboard, and tested the vessel and its electronics in only its second callout. “It all worked extremely well,” he says. He was master, with Dave St John at the helm and Jeanette St John on the radar with another three Coastguard crew and three St John paramedics aboard. “It was 5.15pm, with darkness closing in and wind gusts of up to 50-60 knots.” And after a 50 minute trip in wild seas, the risks continued. Safely disembarked, despite seas rolling up to a metre and a half at the wharf, the crew climbed 150 metres up a steep and narrow dirt track in the pitch dark though driving rain. An hour later, with the patient stabilised, came the stretcher trip back down where Dave, waiting with the helmsman, was responsible for the safe loading of patient and crew. “A bloody nightmare,” he says, adding that the risk of a bad fall from the wharf is high. “But all the team performed magnificently. I have huge pride that in that rescue in horrendous conditions. Sounds Air managing director Andrew Crawford meets passengers on the first Christchurch to Blenheim flight. Inset: Sounds Air pilots Craig Anderson and Dave King after the first return flight from Blenheim to Christchurch.

First flight touches down Story and photo by Cathie Bell The new Sounds Air service between Blenheim and Christchurch started on Monday, and the passengers on the first flight landing in Blenheim were delighted at how it went. “It was a nice flight, very good.” Sounds Air managing director Andrew Crawford shook hands with passengers as they got off the plane and handed out bottles of wine to celebrate the success of the first return flight in the new service. Pilots Craig Anderson and David King flew the first return flight and say it was a good flight. “It was very uneventful, just the way we like it.” David says it kept good time. Even with a head wind down to Christchurch, the flight took the scheduled 45 minutes, and coming back to Blenheim, it was an early landing. Andrew says bookings for the flight are ‘not bad’ and starting to build up. “I’m very confident about this route.” One of the biggest supporters was the Nelson Marlborough District Health Board, he says.

“They came to us immediately asking if we would take this route up. It’s a vital link for patients going to and from Christchurch.” The district health board says it spent $107,341 on flights between Blenheim and Christchurch between April last year and March this year. Sounds Air has taken over the BlenheimChristchurch route after Air New Zealand stopped flying it on Sunday. Air NZ has upgraded its regional fleet to ATRs and Q300s, and the 50-seat Q300s were too large for the route to be economic. Sounds Air flies a nine-seater Pilatus PC12 plane on the Blenheim-Christchurch route, the same planes it flies on the Wellington to Taupo and Westport routes. Andrew says initially Sounds Air will be able to cater for 180 people each week but there’s plenty of room to grow if the route is well supported. “Additional lunchtime and weekend flights, which we are planning to introduce before the end of the year, will add another 120 seats a week. This will mean we will potentially be able to cater for more than 300 passengers on the route each week.”

Authority backs campaign By Cathie Bell Marlborough man Grant Baxter’s road safety campaign has received backing from the New Zealand Transport Agency. A NZ Transport Agency spokesperson says road safety is everyone’s responsibility ‘and it’s great to see people in the community playing a part’. Grant, a real estate agent at Bayleys Marlborough, drives into Blenheim each day and has put up billboards on the main roads to remind people to turn on their headlights when driving. He is disturbed at how many people don’t have their lights on at dawn and dusk and other times when the light is bad. Grant has funded the billboards at his own

cost and says, while he’s had good encouragement from the public, there has been no feedback from the authorities. The NZTA spokeswoman says ‘using your headlights makes you more visible to other drivers, especially in wet weather’. “The road code is clear about when headlights must be used, which is: • from 30 minutes after sunset on one day, until 30 minutes before sunrise on the next day • at any other time when you can’t clearly see a person or vehicle 100 metres away. “It’s also a good idea to get in the habit of regularly checking that all of your headlights (and indicators and brake lights) are working properly.”

SECURITY AT THE TOUCH OF A BUTTON

A revolutionary new coding system, TrioCode 128 provides enhanced reliability and security by using three frequencies to overcome interference issues.

Protecting seniors from fraud and scams Unfortunately, it is becoming more and more common. Senior scams are putting many older adults in harm’s way – threatening to strip them of their assets, identity, independence, and trust. Some of the most common scams involving seniors are: 1. Telemarketing that includes the Internet, phones, and mail Scammers are known to send out emails on bank letterhead that say there is a problem with an account. They ask the senior to update information, passwords, and account numbers. With this information, the scammers now have access to the account. To avoid this scam, check with your bank to make sure they, in fact, sent the email. But remember, trusted sources will never ask you to change vital information or provide personal information via email. 2. Fake charities In this scam, you may get a call from a charity saying it is supporting a reputable organisation and ask you to make a donation. The problem is, this charity may not be authorized to fundraise. To avoid paying for the scammer’s fancy dinners and vacations, contact the organisation directly if you would like to make a

donation. You will be much safer by avoiding thirdparty collectors. 3. Sweepstakes In many cases with sweepstakes, seniors will receive an official-looking cheque. The account number is fraudulent, but the routing number is correct, so a bank would read this as a valid cheque. The scam happens when a senior cashes the cheque. The fine print outlines that the senior receives a small amount of money but owes $5,000 for processing. Remember, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. 4. Financial exploitation In this type of senior scam, thieves will sell seniors long-term securities or stock and rely on the seniors’ inability to understand the fine print. To protect yourself from this type of financial exploitation, consult a trusted family member or friend before taking a financial risk. Avoid becoming a victim Scammers are becoming more tech-savvy and tricky, but taking advantage of free tools will be your best defense against scammers.

“ZEST”

Do you want more “Zest” in your life?

Need a gentle exercise programme with a little more “Zest”? Then “Zest” with Age Concern is for you! This is a predominantly Zumba based exercise programme, with Huia, which will incorporate basic Pilates, gentle yoga and relaxation, finishing with a social opportunity. Please phone Catherine at Age Concern for more information 03 579 3457. WEDNESDAY 24TH AUGUST 2016 10.45am Start. At The Foundry, John Street, Blenheim GOLD COIN DONATION

By Celeste Alexander As you get older, staying active is more important than ever. You may wonder, though, if you can keep up the same pace you once did. For some people riding a bike, walking distances or even playing a round of tennis were regularly enjoyed throughout their lives, but if you have not exercised recently perhaps now is the time. Staying fit comes down to you and what you’re comfortable with, particularly if you have experienced health problems, joint pain or have limited mobility. This is where Age Concern Marlborough comes in. Support worker Catherine Donnelly says after speaking with a number of clients who had expressed a desire for a gentle exercise programme, she came up with the idea of holding weekly classes. Catherine approached Huia Crosby of Huia Holistic Health who was happy to come on board to offer a 10 week exercise programme - Zest which will be held at The Foundry on John Street, Blenheim. Zest is predominantly Zumba based which will incorporate basic Pilates, gentle yoga and relaxation finishing with participants enjoying some friendly socialising. Catherine stresses that this programme is aimed at any fitness level or ability, and chairs are available for those needing some support.

Age Concern Marlborough is providing an exercise programme for people aged 65 and over, in conjunction with Huia Crosby.

“People can do the programme at their own pace and if they can’t do something that’s fine. There’s no obligation to carry on for the 10 weeks if they find it too hard,” she says. Zest begins on Wednesday, August 24 at 10.45am and will run for 10 weeks. It’s designed for people aged 65 and over, but no one will be turned away, Catherine says.

There will be basic fitness tests done at weeks one, five and 10 for participants to see if there have been improvements. If you are interested or would like more information contact Catherine at Age Concern (see their advertisement on this page). Zest has been very generously sponsored by Age Concern New Zealand.

Get to know technology and stay in touch with family.

Tech savvy Stay in touch with family and friends with technology You have guided your children through their younger years, raising them in a home filled with love and laughter. But there comes a time when your children leave home and start having children of their own. How can you stay in touch with your grown children, and their children, when everyone’s lives are busy and active? Sometimes the best way to maintain communication is through technology. Here are four ways for anyone, at any age, to instantly and frequently keep in touch with friends and family. 1. Connect instantly through a text or an email Texting and emailing is a popular means of communication, especially for people who have mismatched schedules and are not always able to connect on the phone. 2. Talk face-to-face from anywhere Modern technology has done wonders for how we make “phone calls” to one another. Thanks to applications like FaceTime, Zoom, and Skype, video chatting is no longer a dream of the future. These applications, which are free to download, allow you to talk face-to-face with your kids and other family members across the country—even across the globe.

Thanks to today’s smartphones, video chatting does not stop at the computer; you can take Skype to your phone when you download an app or use FaceTime with your iPhone. 3. Send a friend request With social media platforms like Facebook, it is easy to keep up with your children and grandchildren no matter where they are. Setting up a free profile on this social media platform gives you access to your child and his or her family and lets you see videos, photos, and personal updates. It may be slightly overwhelming when first setting up a Facebook profile, but your children or grandchildren can certainly show you the ropes of social media. 4. Download an app In today’s world of smartphones, there are a variety of apps that help friends and family keep up on the latest family news. WhatsApp is a texting option that allows users to exchange messages for free, even if they are in different countries. This app has group chat functions so you can chat with all the grandchildren at once. Do you prefer sharing voice messages? HeyTell lets you send and receive voice messages anytime and anywhere to other family members who have the app.

British sister-city links enhanced

MP visits Koreans By Cathie Bell National Party list MP Melissa Lee, who was born in South Korea, yesterday visited Korean students at Marlborough Boys’ and Girls’ Colleges. She also had morning tea with a group of Korean War veterans at the Marlborough Returned Services Association lounge. Marlborough and Nelson are hosting 45 Korean students for eight weeks as part of the Free Trade Agreement signed between New Zealand and Korea last year. As part of the trade agreement, New Zealand and Korea committed to running a scholarship programme for the next three years. Each year, the programme will select 150 high achieving 14-16 year olds from rural and semi-rural Korean communities to come to New Zealand to improve their English language skills. The students will be split between rural New Zealand regions with 50 students going to Waikato, 55 to Canterbury, and 45 to NelsonMarlborough. A rigorous nationwide selection process was held in Korea to choose students for the programme, run by the Korean Agency of Education, Promotion and Information Service in Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries. Last year about 7500 Korean students came to New Zealand to study at universities, schools, polytechnics and English language schools, with a similar number expected again in 2016.

By Cathie Bell The sister-city links between Marlborough, New Zealand and Marlborough, Britain were boosted when Marlborough District councillor Cynthia Brooks visited the Wiltshire town. She met with Marlborough, Britain mayor Noel Barrett-Morton and exchanged books on Marlborough and gave him a painting from painter Clarry Neame, ‘Autumn Twilight’. Cynthia presented a copy of this region’s history ‘Marlborough: Celebrating 150 years’, which she edited, and books which tell some of our other regional stories including the Perano whalers and Molesworth. She was asked to speak at the Marlborough Jazz Festival opening and was interviewed on Swindon independent radio, giving her an opportunity to promote the sister city relationship. The collection of books from Wiltshire, now in libraries in Blenheim and Picton, include The Savernake Big Belly Oak by Barbara Townsend and The Western Kennet Valley in the Great War by Roger Day. Marlborough, Wiltshire’s newspaper the ‘Gazette & Herald’ reports Noel says he and his wife had ‘a wonderful time’ meeting Cynthia and her husband Graham. “What’s more is they came on the opening of the Jazz Festival, they were most impressed by the Town Council and enjoyed

visiting us.” Noel says the sister-city relationship started ‘a while ago when Nick Fogg visited them when he was mayor. “I also received a letter from the

Marlborough council congratulating me on becoming mayor. We have a very good relationship with them. Now we both have a special place in each other’s homes,” he says.

An extension has been created into the reception centre and offices of the former medical centre next door. It was relatively simple to do. Last Friday, a hole was knocked through the wall and some furniture installed, creating a reading lounge and an area for computer use. “It’s an ideal space for groups like the spinners and weavers and for computing classes,” said Joy Fletcher, a librarian in Picton for thirty-plus years. A new library and service centre is

however, planned for the corner of High and Dublin streets. Jamie Lyall, Marlborough District Council’s manager of property and community facilities said tenders for the building would be called in mid-August, with a wait of four weeks before a decision is made. “People can expect to see some activity on the site by the end of September,” he said. Library staff are hoping to be in the new facility for summer 2017. Joy is due to retire in October this year, so she’s delighted to be staying long enough to see all the planning and talking finally coming to fruition.

KiwiSaver and HomeStart caps raised The Government is increasing the income and house price caps of the KiwiSaver HomeStart scheme to ensure it meets its objectives of helping New Zealanders buy their first home, Building and Housing Minister Dr Nick Smith says. “KiwiSaver HomeStart is about helping first home buyers pull together a deposit with a grant of up to $10,000 for an existing house and $20,000 for a new home. “We are adjusting the income and house price caps to take into account increases in both since the scheme was announced so as to ensure it achieves its objective of helping middle income earners into a modest home. “The income caps will increase from $80,000 to $85,000 for a single person and from $120,000 to $130,000 for a couple. “The house price caps are being increased from the existing $350,000, $450,000 and $550,000 depending on region to $400,000, $500,000 and $600,000 for an existing home,

and to $450,000, $550,000 and $650,000 for a new home. “This reflects the $50,000 increase in the national median house price since the scheme began. We are deliberately increasing the cap for new homes by an additional $50,000 to help drive growth in new residential construction. “The $500,000 existing/$550,000 new applies to those areas gazetted in the HASHA legislation , which includes Tasman, and the $400,000 existing/$450,000 new to the other areas of New Zealand,” he says. These increases in the income and house price caps will also be applied to the Welcome Home loans. These loans enable first home buyers to buy with a 10 per cent deposit and because they are government guaranteed are exempt from the loan-to-value (LVR) ratio limits from the Reserve Bank. “A couple who are each on the average income of $60,000 will, after five years in KiwiSaver, now be able to withdraw $45,000 from

their KiwiSaver accounts and obtain a HomeStart grant of $20,000 if they’re buying a new build.

“With this $65,000 deposit, they may be eligible for a Welcome Home Loan, which requires only a

10 per cent deposit, enabling them to be in the market for a new home of up to $650,000,” Nick says.

Reduced fees KiwiSaver plan launched The launch of a new nonprofit KiwiSaver Plan recently declares war on high fees, and a new online era for New Zealand’s future retirees. Simplicity KiwiSaver, a 100 per cent online, passively managed index based fund, aims to make the average New Zealander significantly better off in retirement. Managing director Sam Stubbs says Simplicity’s structure means its fees will be the lowest in the market, less than half the average cost, and cheaper than the current fees offered by all default providers.

“New Zealanders deserve more transparency, better online services, and significantly reduced Kiwisaver fees – little of which they are currently getting.” Sam says. Lack of education and lack of transparency around KiwiSaver fees meant few people understood how fees work and what kind of impact they have on long-term savings. “It’s time to break down the power that the big KiwiSaver funds have to extract unnecessary fees from New Zealanders, and put that money back into the pockets of hard working Kiwis,” he says.

Zealanders don’t even realise the high fees that they are paying,” he says. “Over their lifetime, the average Kiwi will spend around $36,000 on mobile phone charges, $37,000 on power, but $55,000 on KiwiSaver fees. It could be the biggest household expense that no one knows about.” By charging reduced fees via its nonprofit, online, index investing model, Simplicity estimates the average KiwiSaver (over a lifetime of saving) could be about $65,000 wealthier in retirement (based on like-for-like comparisons using industry data).

Story and photo by Celeste Alexander A special milestone will be celebrated tomorrow by the Marlborough branch of the Ulysses Club. The club is celebrating its 25 year anniversary and to mark the occasion a garden area has been created along with the installation of a seat and a rock that bears a commemoration plaque. Club spokesperson Kelvin Watson says club members got together last year to brainstorm ideas of what the branch could do to mark 25 years of helping the community. “We approached the Marlborough District Council with the idea of installing a rock or seat with a plaque somewhere along the Taylor River.

“Space for this was not available so the council offered us this garden instead,” he says. The garden is located on the corner of Hutcheson and John Streets, beside the Blenheim School boundary. Council prepared the site and provided the plants and a group of Blenheim School students helped club members to plant the garden. The rock was sourced from the Omaka Valley and put in place with the help of Mega Mitre10 Marlborough and one of their drivers. Club members Kevin and Nicky Bright, Jeff and Wendy Champion and Kelvin Watson were on hand to maneuver it into place.

The plaque was kindly supplied and fitted by Cloudy Bay Funeral Services. That left the seat to be organised, which ended up being a combined effort between the club and the council, who each paid an equal share of the cost. An official unveiling of the plaque and garden area is being held tomorrow. Mike Dew, the national president for the Ulysses Club of New Zealand, will do the unveiling. “It’s wonderful to see this garden come together and we are thrilled to have this plaque out for the public to see. “The club is proud to have contributed to the community for 25 years and we are looking forward to many more,” Kelvin says.

Proud to be members of Ulysses Club Marlborough as we celebrate 25 years in the community. For a complete list of services please visit our website.

After watching a television documentary on the Australian Ulysses Club early in 1988, Maurice James, Phil Anker, Murray Fairhurst and Allan Barnes joined Ulysses as affiliated Australian members. Later that year, Allan Edgar joined the New Zealand Club and became the first New Zealand member in Blenheim (prior to this they were all members of the Marlborough Road Riders Club). The inaugural meeting of the Blenheim Branch was held at the home of Phil Anker (late in 1988) in Blenheim with the above five members present and Phil elected as the first Blenheim Branch co-ordinator. By early 1989 membership numbers had risen to twelve and In 1989 there were 20 members counted in the whole ‘top of the south zone’. Memorable events in the history of the branch: • 1988, the first meeting of what was to become the ‘Blenheim’ branch of Ulysses

was held at the home of Phil Anker. Four affiliated Australian members and one New Zealand member were present. • 1989, the first Beavertown Rally was held at Canvastown. • 1995, the Ambulance Ride in April raised $168 towards a new Ambi Bag for the Air Ambulance service. • 1996, The Ambulance Ride in April raised $450 for the Picton Ambulance service. 103 bikes took part. • 2004, Shelly’s Café at ‘The Village’ on Rapaura Road was adopted as the club’s permanent Saturday morning meeting place for members. • 2006, The Ambulance Ride in April raised $2100 for the Westpac Rescue Helicopter. 120 bikes took part. • 2009, The inaugural Marlborough Branch Toy Run was organised by Jane Laing, Al Harper and Pete Rickerby and held in December. 150 bikes took part.

To have your business seen by Marlborough,

Crossroads coordinator Janette Walker who is offering the place as a once-a-week drop-in centre for RSE workers.

Crossroads offers social space Story and photo by Cathie Bell Crossroads could become a drop-in centre for RSE workers. Coordinator Janette Williams says she has talked with the Crossroads board about utilising the place a bit more and what it could be used for in the times it was closed. She made the offer to wine industry representatives during a summit on industry labour needs last week, saying the workers, particularly those from overseas, needed more pastoral care in Marlborough. Crossroads wasn’t open on Sunday, and that was generally the one day that RSE workers had off, she says. “They do go to the library, but backpackers go there, everyone goes there on a Sunday, the place gets pretty crowded.” There is nowhere else for Vanuatuan people here as part of the RSE scheme to go on their days off, Janette says. “Their own accommodation is pretty cramped… This would let them catch up with their mates and friends they don’t see during the week.” Using Crossroads as an RSE dropin centre on Sundays would cost about $150 a week,

Janette says. That would cover someone to run the kitchen, and overheads such as electricity and gas use. She presumes their socialising will be centred around food and she knew someone who would be more than happy to manage the kitchen. “It would just be nice for them to be in a place they can spend the day, sit around, have a meal and catch up.” It would be great if the wine industry would consider providing a permanent facility for RSE workers that was available seven days a week as part of their pastoral care, she says. Her offer had been prompted by a grapegrower commenting to her how ‘cold and miserable’ the workers looked wandering around Blenheim on a wet day when they were unable to work and how they had nowhere to go. Janette says she hasn’t had any feedback on her offer to the summit yet. “It would be good to get together with a couple of the wine guys and RSE-accredited contractors and work something out.”

Brian moves up in racing world Sport By Cathie Bell Se d don m a n Br ia n Wastney has been elected vice-chairman of Harness Racing NZ. Brian, the chairman of the Marlborough Harness Racing Club, says he’s passionate about harness racing. He started in the industry at 16, and is now 61. He’s been a breeder and owner of horses, and has chaired

Brian Wastney. the Marlborough club for four years, and was the Nelson club’s chair when he lived there.

“I go back a wee while.” Brian says harness racing struggles financially as an industry. It relies on a large voluntary base with the clubs around New Zealand, and ‘we’re all getting older’, he says. There is lots for the board to do, but he is confident improvements can be made. “It’s about encouraging

young people to come into it. We’re working with the Racing Board to increase their turnover and the benefits coming back to the industry for all codes moving forward. “It’s very challenging at the moment, but I’m sure we’re working towards making it better. “There are opportunities, we’ve just got to make it work.”

Brian says the industry offers a good programme for juniors and they get trained in all aspects of the industry. While liking horses is ‘the secret to it’, there have been successful industry people who didn’t come from horsey backgrounds and who have done really well, he says. “It’s an industry for everyone.”

Hammett starts at Tasman

Sunwolves Super Rugby coach Mark Hammett has started as the Tasman Makos’ new assistant rugby coach, beginning late last week. Hammett is wellknown in New Zealand rugby, having served as an assistant at the Crusaders from 2007-10 and he was head coach at the Hurricanes from 2011-14 before taking up the director of rugby role at the Cardiff Blues (2014-15). He also has 81 caps to his name at the Crusaders where he played from 1996-2003 and 29 for the All Blacks throughout a test career spanning four years.

Paddon and Kennard fifth in Finland By Cathie Bell Kiwis Hayden Paddon and John Kennard have secured fifth place overall at Rally Finland on Sunday (Finnish time), after a tight final day battle with Hyundai Motorsport teammate Thierry Neuville and co-driver Nicolas Gilsoul. New Zealand’s top rallying pairing finished the eighth round of the FIA World Rally Championship with a determined flourish, setting the second-fastest stage time on each of Sunday’s four special stages. In fact, their combined time for the final 34.20 kilometres of competition were the fastest of all competitors, but they couldn’t quite catch Neuville, finishing just 2.3 seconds behind the Belgium who took fourth place after both Hyundai drivers benefited from

Ott Tanak crashing out of the rally. Neuville was, in turn, just 4.6 seconds off third place, highlighting the close battle for the final podium position which went to Craig Breen, while Kris Meeke took victory from Jari-Matti Latvala. Paddon also took two bonus points for second place in the power stage. He’s now fourth place on the WRC drivers’ championship leader-board with 84 points. Of his seventh appearance at the event dubbed the Finnish Grand Prix, Paddon says it was a difficult rally. “To get in the top five was good. It’s obviously been trying with the road cleaning over the first two days and we lost a bit too much time earlier on in the rally. “We gave it our all but

It’s a United V City Knockout Cup final Blenheim Valley United continued their football dominance beating Central Pirates in the Knockout Cup semi-final 4-1. Even with the assistance of Paul Finnegan masterminding the Pirates Cup campaign and Michael Jay scoring first after the 0-0 scoreline at half time, they could not hold out the bare 11 of United. Take Thu, Caleb Downes, Liam Kennedy and James Mailama were outstanding for a talented young side who will go into the final as favourites. In the other semi-final it was Rangers City who finally had some luck behind them make it to the final with a 3-1 win over Blenheim Valley Masters.
