Story and photo by Cathie Bell Marlborough is holding a public Vietnam War commemoration service for the first time, on the 50th anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan, one of the war’s biggest battles. Veterans Alister Allan and John Capill were in Victor 3 company, with Don Bensemann, the only Marlborough man to be killed in action during the war. The two will be among the many attending the service on Thursday next week. Vietnam veterans to be honoured 50 years on at public service Continued from page 1 The Vietnam War commemoration service is to be held at the Seymour Square memorial clock tower at 11am on Thursday, August 18. It marks the 50th anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan. Service organiser Peter Slape says the service is to commemorate and pay tribute to all the New Zealanders who died in the Vietnam War, as well as those who have died since. August 18 has been commemorated in Australia as ‘Long Tan Day’ for many years, and the Australians

who died in the Vietnam War will also be remembered, he says. “It was an ANZAC effort. “We lost 37 men all together, and Australia lost 485.” This is the first time the Vietnam War is to be commemorated in Marlborough, and remembering it nationally has also been uncommon. It is a war where there are a lot of conflicted emotions around New Zealand’s involvement, with protests against local soldiers fighting what was seen as an unjust war, and many soldiers were made to feel unwel-

come when they returned home. Peter says it was hard for the veterans. “We were treated like lepers when we came home. That’s been laid to rest now, we don’t go on about it now.” All three men – Peter, John, and Alister – have been back to Vietnam and all have visited the Long Tan battle site, including what Alister calls their ‘old stamping ground’ of the Nui Dat base. John says the Victor 3 company is to have a reunion next March, and

there will be a memorial service for Don, who died in action in 1968, and another man from the company, Mike Wickman. “Don was the only man from Marlborough who died in the Vietnam War.” He still has family here, although his brothers now live further south. They are being invited to the reunion. • Vietnam War commemoration, the 50th anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan, at the Seymour Square war memorial clock towers, at 11am on Thursday August 18.

TWICE WEEKLY

Sailing win’s many firsts By Cathie Bell Two young Blenheim men have won an international sailing cup, receiving a cup even bigger than the America’s Cup trophy. Nick Gardiner, 17, and Nick Williams, 15, are both students from Marlborough Boys’ College and members of Marlborough Venturers, Queen Charlotte Yacht Club, and Waikawa Boating Club. They are the first New Zealand team to win the William I Koch International Sea Scout Cup, at Long Beach, California. Run every two years, it is sponsored by William Koch, a former Americas Cup skipper and winner, to support the development of youth sailing. He presented the cup to the Nicks, but as the cup is made by the same silver smith as

the Americas Cup but five centimetres bigger and valued at over USD $250,000, they were not allowed to take it home. Nick Gardiner says it is a heavy trophy and would have needed its own seat on the plane home. “It was hard to drink out of.” He says William told them that normally winners drink champagne from the trophy, but as the drinking age in the United States is 21, they were only allowed water. The two Nicks beat 80 other young men and women from 10 countries, with final points after the five-day event seeing the Kiwis on 15 points, well ahead of USA31 on 32 points and Finland on 34 points. This made the Kiwis the first overseas team to win the Koch Cup and the biggest margin

win in the history of the cup. Nick Gardiner competed in the event in 2014 with Seren Adams, placing fourth, and after that, he teamed up with Nick Williams, with the goal of being the first-ever New Zealand crew to win the prestigious trophy. Both are keen sailors, having started sailing about seven years ago. Both sailors have been inducted into the Marlborough D ist r ict Cou nci l- Sp or t Tasman Hall of Fame and were Champions at the South Island Champs in February. Team Nick & Nick have been supported physically and financially by their parents, Chris and Sara Williams and Ian and Miranda Gardiner. They thank their parents and sponsors for all their help and financial support.

‘The Colonel’ puts his hand up for mayor By Cathie Bell Blenheim businessman John Davis is putting his hand up to be mayor of Marlborough. John, known as ‘The Colonel’, is well-known around town, particularly for his work in running the committee for ‘Operation Coverup’, which built the aquatic centre, and many other developments and sporting organisations around Marlborough along with his heavy involvement in the real estate business in Marlborough. He says there is no ‘sitting on the fence’ with him. “Marlborough is my life…I look for solutions, not problems. I have the enthusiasm, fun, and passion for this place.” He wa nts a un ited Marlborough, and as a mayoral candidate, wants to instil a positive united mind set for Marlborough. At 71, John has done a lot in Marlborough and he laughs when asked if 71 is too old to be Mayor. “Jeepers no! That depends on the individual – I’m 71 going on 50.” Born and raised in Marlborough, John became a builder before becoming a real estate agent. Over the years, he’s poured his energies into

community projects, such as sports leadership, the Round Table, chaired the combining of the Clubs of Marlborough, and has written a book about his life ‘A Fist Full of Life’, which is what he stands for, he says. Water is his number one issue, this controls everything in life, John says. “Its use has to be sustainable. Everyone should have beautiful clear drinking water. “ Ye s , g r ow t h w i l l happen but it has to be respectful of the environment and quality of life, which we all value highly in Marlborough. “We must unite as one, plan the rate of growth we want, not at what rate other people demand of us, if it puts pressure on our resources. Quality first.” Creating a ‘magic’ central business district is also important. John says it needs to be revitalised by a united local group. He wants to see no outside consultants ‘charging an arm and a leg and with no empathy and passion for Marlborough’ as there are local experts he has more faith in. The new theatre is an asset, he says, but the due diligence was ‘average’. “This should have been a council project and sup-

ported by the enthusiast, like the council did with the stadium, instead of the reverse.” John says clarity comes first as he is ‘short with too much bureaucracy and waffle’. “No rambling – cut to the chase. If any groups have a vision and a plan,

do your homework, set it out clearly and concise, I’ll welcome the ideas if it’s good for Marlborough, then I’m all ears. John says Marlborough needs a passionate united team, including Kaikoura MP Stuart Smith, ‘all on the same page’. “I’m tweaking the most

successful culture there, the All Blacks. One team, the right people on the bus, structure so it can work. That’s why they are so successful. They enjoy it and are passionate, it’s fun, it works.” • More election news on page 4, including a list of nominations so far.

Ten beer kegs were stolen sometime early Monday morning from the Old Bank Tavern in Redwoodtown. Owner Mike Pink says the kegs were chained up and police are checking security camera footage for the thieves.

Police have referred information about last week’s death at the Budge Street level crossing to the coroner. A man was hit and killed by a train at the level crossing on Budge Street in Blenheim about 3.15pm on Thursday, police say. “Police do not believe there are any suspicious circumstances and the matter will now be referred to the coroner.”

By Cathie Bell They may be iconic features of Blenheim, but the Seymour Square clock tower and fountain are not allowed to appear in electioneering and political material. More than one would-be Marlborough District Council candidate has already fallen foul of the rules, election staff say. Electoral officer Dean Heiford says there are restrictions on the use of Seymour Square in election posters or brochures as the clock tower and fountain are war memorials. “The gardens themselves are ok to use. “The monuments should not be used for election purposes, and for any other purpose, you need council and sometimes Marlborough Returned Services Association approvals. “Any other monument, cemetery or urupa should not be

Other challenges for Hope By Cathie Bell Former mayor Gerald Hope will not have another run at the position, he says. Gerald, chief executive of the Marlborough Research Centre, says he has been asked to stand, but due to current commitments and future workload at the Marlborough Research Centre, he will not be contesting this election. He says he will put his name forward to continue on the Nelson Marlborough District Health Board, which he was elected to three years ago. Gerald says through personal experience, he understands the importance of the mayor’s position as a community and regional leader and the pivotal role the mayor performs in representing the district at all levels. “Whoever wins the ballot for Mayor must have the ability to lead the council and the chief executive, be a capable advocate and communicator, understand the operations and functions of council, connect with Marlborough’s widespread communities and business sectors and most important of all represent

Gerald Hope.

people at all levels.” The council is in a strong financial position with minimal debt, Gerald says. Around 70 per cent of council work is providing infrastructure and core services which over several decades have been upgraded, replaced or built, with more planned. Water management, storage, allocation and distribution for farming are essential, he says, as is clean reliable community supplies for Seddon, Renwick and Havelock.

“Overall waste management, particularly solid winery waste, is an area that needs to meet growth projections of the industry. “Therefore election policy and pledges should focus ahead and look with optimism at what can be achieved in the next three years.” Gerald says a new mayor needs to build a cohesive, constructive, positive and forward looking council, selecting the deputy mayor through council election, not mayoral appointment. The mayor needs to connect council and engage the community with a public forum before every full council meeting, using technology, and holding a series of sector and business summits, he says, as well as taking a position on the new combined colleges site location and future development, increasing support for tourism and cycleway development, and providing more healthy homes. Population growth is another key issue, he says. “Population growth will support and maintain affordable cost effective and well maintained services in future years.”

Story and photos by Celeste Alexander A group of local singers have been busy preparing their voices for an up and coming concert they hope will ‘raise the roof’ this weekend. The Marlborough Singers will be holding its ‘Go Pop’ concert at the Wesley Centre this Saturday and Sunday, performing a number of songs written by well known musicians. There will be everything from a Beatles medley to songs by Eric Clapton and Leonard Cohen. The group will also perform a collection of songs from Rodgers and Hammerstein shows, beginning with The Sound of Music, through Oklahoma and South Pacific to end

with ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ by Carousel. A tribute will be paid to Queen with the dramatic Bohemian Rhapsody and Under Pressure, and even a touch of jazz will be introduced. Conductor for the Marlborough Singers is Robert Tucker, a baritone and who is a regular soloist with the New Zealand Opera. The accompanist is David Neild, a local lawyer who, along with his law degree, holds a Bachelor of Music in classical piano from the New Zealand School of Music. The shows will be held at 7pm on Saturday and 4pm on Sunday, tickets are $10 and are sold at the door.

Sweet treats times two Story and photo by Cathie Bell International Toasted Marshmallow Day is on soon, and the celebrations are growing. The event, hosted by the Marlborough Youth Trust, have been held the past two years in Liz Davidson Place, and they have been extremely popular. In the first year, young people from Kaikoura attended. This year, the event is growing and there will be two sessions – one in Blenheim and another one in Picton. Picton’s event is up first, being held on Friday next week at the Endeavour Park Pavilion from 5pm until 7pm. Blenheim’s event is the following Friday, on August 26, at Liz Davidson Place from 5pm until 7pm. Organiser Deedee Bancroft says it is ‘pretty cool’ that the event has grown to include Picton for the first time. She says she’s trying to get a youth band to play at both events, and there will be other entertainment and activities for young people to try out, as well as marshmallows to toast. Hot food will be available for buying and

Dear Ed, In response to Tony Woolf. I understand that the place you grew up in has changed beyond comprehension within a very short space of time. Change that you are not personally involved in or benefit from would be hard to perceive as all good. However, as a wine grower who has choosen to be involved in this industry, I have to take some of your points and correct them as I see them. Viticulture is a monoculture of endless rows. So is a field of maize or paddock of bonedry grass. The shelter belts that have been removed were mostly exotic belts of macrocarpa and the like. Progress does this. Dear Ed, I read often in the papers of the problem around the new theatre with traffic. I have watched on a number of occasions the close calls with pedestrians and cars. Everyone has their ideas - love the theatre, or hate it, it’s here to stay. I would like to offer my solution, which I believe would solve the whole problem at very little cost and could be trialled without any problem. You could use temporary hire equipment for the trial. First, you block Hutcheson Street at the theatre, making traffic travel round John Street to Seymour Street. To do this, all the parks in John and Seymour Streets will go. Marlborough District Council staff will then need to use the parking building at Alfred Street. At the Seymour and Alfred Street corner, a small roundabout the same as the Hutcheson Street and Alfred Street corner would be installed. This would stop the temptation to turn right into Hutcheson Street. The meters in Alfred Street could be removed as they don’t appear to be being used. If nothing else, this is food for thought. Huge challenges for new college principal Earlier this year, the-then Queen Charlotte College principal, Tom Parsons, left Picton for an educational consultancy role in Auckland. His replacement and former deputy, Betty Whyte, picks up the leadership at a testing time in secondary education, she tells Glenise Dreaver. There are, says new principal Betty Whyte, “dramatic” changes in the way children are being encouraged to learn “and we at QCC have to navigate our way through that”. Change is rapid, as children are coming from primary schools used to student-driven enquirybased learning. Secondary schools had lagged behind these changes, but that is no longer an option she says. So staff are very quickly adopting a new role as teachers of learning how to learn, instead of focussing on content. While they still have the challenge of preparing children for NCEA qualifications, instead of starting with content areas they might start with a broad theme such as “culture”. “Students create small groups or work on their own to select a country for example. “Then their teacher will guide them in their information search. “ Despite the increased focus on using technology, the days of learning the skills in expensively fitted-out computing suites have gone. “These days students bring their own technological tools to school.” “They know far more about using it, and the software and apps available, than their teachers. So everyone learns from each other.”

Another new direction will be much more focus on community citizenship. “We will have increased involvement in such groups as rest homes and charities, and including conservation initiatives like the Kaipupu Point sanctuary and beach clean-ups .” They are also, she says, developing a “fabulous” relationship with the local marae which includes using it as an off-site campus for art and craft and other activities. Her new role has meant some painful personal changes, including handing over her responsibility for aquaculture training to Michael Stewart. “It was my baby. But he has a wealth of practical experience, and the scheme is doing so well. “ She is excited that in September the school will have its first drama production for several years. ‘Mai Tohi’ has been written by Fairlie Atkinson and directed by Gillian Allot, both teachers at QCC Despite the new initiatives, she sees her appointment as continuing the college’s previous direction under Tom Parson’s leadership. “We’d worked closely together.” One vindication of that has come with the recent results of an online and anonymous Ministry of Education school wellness survey. QCC levels of bullying were compared

Queen Charlotte College principal Betty Whyte.

with national levels. “There were very few problems. Staff were more concerned than students and we were mostly below the national average.”

It hasn’t been a totally straight forward journey towards her new role. Nine years ago Betty had to take a month off work, was on restricted duties for four months.

That was a lesson she says, in taking the moment and enjoying it. “I just thought ‘I’m not going to let this take me down’. I’m a bit of a fighter.

All invited to open day By Celeste Alexander Where else in Marlborough can you find somewhere that offers activities from cards, fitness and rock ‘n’ roll dance through to diving, fishing and snooker all under one roof? The Clubs of Marlborough of course. The Clubs of Marlborough is inviting the public to its ‘Open Day’ this Sunday 14th August to enjoy a guided tour of the Clubs extensive facilities. Clubs CEO Lee Davis says there are people in the community who have yet to step through the doors. “I think some people still have that perception that the Clubs is for the older generation, who come to eat a meal, place some bets and enjoy a few drinks. “It’s so much more than that. We are essentially a home to a huge array of clubs, sports and social groups. “One day we could be hosting a funeral and the next, a mums and babies coffee group. Hopefully by people coming through for a guided tour they can see that there is so much to this club and it’s ideal for families too,” Lee says.

As well as welcoming the community, the aim of the open day is to expose existing members to the facility and what is on offer. “There are activities everyday and if people feel like there is nothing to do, come to the Clubs where everything you could possibly want is under one roof,” Lee adds. During the open day, most of the Clubs’ sections will be active or have a presence on the day so the public can see for themselves, get information and ask questions. Up in the Taylor Restaurant there will be a wedding set up for people to visualise special events being hosted there, and people will be able to see the exciting new changes currently in motion. An area for children’s birthdays will also be set up for families to see what the Clubs has to offer as well as a drawing competitions on the day and prizes. “The idea is to take a week’s worth of activities and give people a snap shot of what we are about,” Lee says. The open day will be held between 10am and 2pm. People are welcome to stay on afterwards, enjoy a free sausage or sandwich.

Theatre group recruiting By Steve Mason Anyone who fancies themselves as a Dolly Parton or a Burt Reynolds should think about auditioning for the latest production by Blenheim Musical Theatre. The show is Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, the stage version of the movie that starred Parton and Reynolds in the lead roles. Auditions for the show are being held this week and director-choreographer Jeannie Mark is looking for a cast of up to 20 characters and ensemble roles. It will be Jeannie Mark's first production for Blenheim Musical Theatre as director. She has done many shows as choreographer, and for this show will combine the two roles. The show will be the group's annual dinner-theatre production, running from November 11 to 24. Best Little Whorehouse in Texas is a musical based on the true story of a legendary brothel that operated from the 1840s until 1973, when the show is set.

Mothers happy with Big Latch On effort By Celeste Alexander This year’s Big Latch On event, held last Friday, saw 28 local women come together to be counted breastfeeding at the same time. Organiser Felicity Spencer says although this year was lower than last year’s total of 47, it was still a great event with plenty of support and positivity. “This year I think the children outnumbered the adults,” she laughs.

He called his friends after finding a spot where there was cell phone coverage and gave them his location. The man was found by search and rescue teams around 4am, wet and cold with an injured ankle. Police thanked the efforts of volunteers who worked

“We had one set of twins and many of the mothers brought along their other children which made the whole event really fun.” There was plenty of support shown to the breastfeeding women by family members and friends who also attended. Koromiko woman Gemma Franken who the Sun profiled in the lead up to the event, was tandem feeding her sons Nico and Chase and says overall it was a “brilliant event”.

The Sun looks at local business in the Seddon and Awatere area

Sand and smiles for Awatere children By Celeste Alexander There’s been plenty of action about the Awatere Early Childhood Centre in recent months with the construction of a brand new sandpit and a major landscaping of the outside area. The Awatere community and businesses rallied around the centre to help it fundraise for the sandpit, raising around $16,000. Centre manager Stacey Gerritsen says there have been some “amazing sponsors” and helpers who helped to build the six metre by four metre sized sandpit. “Our major sponsor was Jason Bates, a local builder and father to one of the children we have at the centre who we are incredibly grateful to, as well as lots of help from parents, staff and families. Everyone got involved and helped to

HAMISH BLACKWELL

make this a reality for the children,” she says. The sandpit was completed in July and will be officially opened on September 22. The Awatere community is invited to attend so the centre can formally thank all who were involved, Stacey says. “It’s a beautifully large sandpit that the children absolutely love. The children are always in it playing and are really creative with what they make.” Major landscaping has also been carried out on the grassed area and the fences will be taken down in two weeks. “We are so grateful to the community and families who have helped. We even had our amazing neighbour pop over with top soil and his tractor, so from us all here at the centre we thank you,” Stacey says.

Contractors gear up for vineyard development By Celeste Alexander The season for vineyard development is gearing up for companies Marlborough wide, including Awatere based business H Blackwell Contracting. Hamish Blackwell says his business has been doing a lot of conversion work for vineyards from farmlands. While drainage work is big this year, irrigation installation, posts and stays, land contouring and land clearing are also keeping the business busy during the pre-development stage. “We do a lot of private work, open market stuff and a lot of the blocks we are developing are between five and 30 hectares. Traditionally it used to be a third of that. “We are also doing work for existing growers who are looking to fill the surrounding farm blocks,” he says. While H Blackwell Contracting specialises in the development of vineyards, the team also carries out ‘re-developments’ for growers wanting to change variety, vine removal for the likes of trunk disease or to change the row orientation or width.

“In the early developments row widths were often three metres, now growers are wanting to get down to two and a half or less,” Hamish says. In addition to viticulture development H Blackwell Contracting specialises in all other rural earthworks and are able to provide a wide range of services, from house and shed sites, to agricultural and farm maintenance. The business has grown substantially since its formation in 2006 and has even expanded into dam work. “We are growing quite steadily and I could comfortably say that we have tripled in size. Our subsidiary company Damit has become quite busy on its own specialising in dam construction and purpose built reservoirs. “I think a lot of our success has come from good partnerships with other companies and of course the team we have in place. “I have guys that have worked with me from when the company was a single machine operation and now I have some young guys in on apprenticeships going through their training,” he says.

Largest pony club event coming to Awatere The Springston Trophy to bring over 200 riders for three day competition By Celeste Alexander The largest pony club event in the Southern Hemisphere is coming to the Awatere next month, bringing riders from as far as Wellington and Invercargill to the region. The Springston Trophy was last hosted in Marlborough by Blenheim in 1994. The sheer size and prestige associated to winning means it will be a huge event for the Awatere. Hosted by the Awatere Pony Club, this event will not only be bringing in a huge number of people to the region, but will also be showcasing the Awatere, event secretary Jo Cameron says. “Our aim was to bring eventing back to life in the Marlborough area and promote the sport to the wider Top of the South equestrian base. “Our small but dedicated branch hopes to show some of the larger clubs of the South Island that it can be done and promoting what the Awatere has to offer as a destination,” she says. It will be held over three days, with the dressage phase on September 30 at the Ward Domain, then the cross country phase at Chris and Trish Redwood’s property in Seddon, and the last day of show jumping back at the Ward Domain on October 2. Depending on the make up of the teams, as they can be as little as four, maximum of six riders competing over three heights of jumps (80cm junior, 95cm intermediate and 1.05m for senior riders) organisers are anticipating over 200 riders, their horses and ponies, coaches, managers and extended families to be part of the weekend. Most of the those coming to Marlborough for the event will be billeted out by local families.

Nomination forms have been received from 43 teams represented by 30 branches/ clubs of the New Zealand Pony Club Association of the South Island, as well as the addition of teams from Nga Tawa (Wellington) making the journey to compete. A Blenheim branch team will be competing with Hane Johnsen having qualified as an intermediate rider. About the Springston Trophy The Springston Trophy had humble beginnings, being conceived at the breakfast table of the late Mary Dalley at Pemberton, near Christchurch. Don Collett and Joan McCall were traveling back to the south with horses that had competed at the 1971 NZPCA horse trials championships in Masterton. All three agreed it would be a good idea to have a competition that allowed ordinary

riders in the branches who may never attend the championships the opportunity to compete. Mary Dalley proposed that the Springston branch would hold the first such event, provided the Gore branch, to which Don Collett and Joan McCall belonged, agreed to hold the one following. “I’ll ask a parent to donate a trophy and we will keep the costs down and run it as cheaply as possible” Mary said. During the next three months the form of the Springston Trophy was shaped by Mary and Joan, over the course of many long and involved telephone calls, with the first event being held at Springston on 26 and 27 August 1972 on the properties of I & K Bailey and Mrs. C Wright. The parents who donated the trophy were Margaret and Murray Foster.

Mag & Turbo It’s coming up two years since Darrell and Tina Bate made the decision to bring the Mag & Turbo franchise to Marlborough. The Blenheim couple say it’s been a great 18 months so far, building the business to where it is today. “Tina and I had given serious thought to bringing the Mag & Turbo franchise to the province before actually committing to it, and have had no regrets since,” Darrell says. Backed by their two full-time staff members, John Talbot and Russell Mouat, Darrell says the business is going from strength to strength. John joined the team in February 2015 after returning ‘home’ from Christchurch and has been involved in the motor trade for most of his working life. Russell came into the business in No-

vember 2015 after 11 years working for a leading car dealership and carrying out his trade qualification many years ago. “Within the Mag & Turbo family, we are surrounded with people who share a passion for cars. We love talking about cars, driving cars and working on them. “Some people just sell tyres but Mag & Turbo people live their passion,” Darrell says. Mag & Turbo, since starting in 1993 has become New Zealand’s only specialist mag wheel retail chain. “Our product range also comprises of tyres, servicing and 4x4 and performance accessories. “We are proudly the largest 100 per cent NZ owned and operated independent wheel and tyre retailer,” he says.

Our point of difference There are many points that separate Mag & Turbo Blenheim from the rest, says owner Darrell Bate. “We offer the best selection of wheel, tyre and suspension brands, meaning we can truly recommend options from a larger spectrum of suppliers and not be tied to a parent company product. “Only specialising in car, 4x4 and SUV vehicles guarantees that it is our core interest,” he says. Mag & Turbo Blenheim’s workshop is Marlborough’s only Mobil Service Centre and is also well equipped for suspension and brake work. “We can offer a shock absorber test with a full printed report on the condition of a vehicle’s suspension system,” Darrell

says. Mag & Turbo Blenheim can also supply accessories for your 4x4 including nudge bars, bull bars, sports bars, tailgate assists, tow bars and other dress-up items. “We can also source and fit Cool Air induction and high performance exhaust systems for any make and model of car,” Darrell says. More help for Emily and Chris Young Marlborough couple Emily Stein and Chris McMurtrie are to be the beneficiaries of a charity auction making the most of the Marlborough Sounds. Aaron Price from Sea Kayak Adventures in Anakiwa says the company is running a charity auction trying to raise as much money as possible for Chris and Emily, who was diagnosed with incurable cancer shortly after the birth of her second child. “We are auctioning off a two-day guided walk on the brilliant Nydia Track, with

everything included: water taxi, accommodation, food and of course a local guide for the trip. The total retail cost is $1840. “We don’t mind how much it gets but we do know that every cent will be massive for both Emily and Chris and their families.” The auction finishes on Saturday. Aaron says the company is part of a wider community and everyone is all doing their best to help them out as ‘we all feel they have been dealt a pretty crappy hand’.

Ulysses New Zealand Club president Mike Dew and Marlborough branch co-ordinator Kelvin Watson unveil the rock and plaque installed to celebrate the club’s 25th anniversary.

Proud moment for bikers Story and photos by Celeste Alexander Last Thursday saw a gathering of motorcycle riders who turned out for a very special rock and garden unveiling. The Marlborough branch of the Ulysses Club celebrated 25 years by having a seat and rock installed with a commemoration plaque at the corner of Hutcheson and John Streets. The club’s ‘Retreads’ riding group attended as well as a number of committee members

who were present for the unveiling. Ulysses Club national president Mike Dew spoke to the crowd before unveiling the plaque, congratulating the Marlborough branch for its efforts in the community. “Marlborough would have to be one of the most proactive clubs in the country. “I’m a Marlburian myself and am very proud of what this club has achieved so on behalf of the national body I thank you for your efforts,” Mike says.

Craig was born and raised in Auckland, being adopted out as a baby, as a teenager he struggled with anorexia, and later-on with sickness and belts of depression after the Inland Revenue closed his business down. Winnie a Samoan girl grew up on the North Shore, where five gangs also lived and operated, she saw some very horrific sights as a teenager. Craig and Winnie met in Dunedin when Craig was a successful salesman traveling the country, making lots of money and owning expensive cars. Clothing donations wanted for women By Celeste Alexander Over 100 women will be enjoying a special pampering session this month thanks to the very kind generosity of local businesses and donations from the community. Foundations co-ordinator Noralyn Berwick who runs self esteem group programmes began organising pamper days for the women she worked with. She found it to be a huge boost to their confidence and morale so decided to expand it to include more agencies throughout Marlborough. In the first year she had 60 women and 20 pamperers, in the second year these numbers doubled and for this year Noralyn is expecting around 100 women and over 60 pamperers. The women are nominated by local agencies and receive goodie bags, clothing, spot

prizes and beauty treatments. “One woman told me she had never felt so beautiful as she was holding back the tears,” Noralyn says. Local businesses have donated their time, staff and resources to the pamper day to provide hair, makeup, nails, massage, basic health checks and clothing advice. While everything is ready to go, Noralyn is still accepting donations of pre-loved clothing in good condition as well as jewellery, scarves and items for spot prizes. If anyone is interested in donating to this event, they can drop their items to the Salvation Army on the corner of George and Henry Streets. Just mention they are for the pamper day. Donations will be accepted up until the beginning of next week.

Project Janzoon director Devon McLean speaks at the Cawthron Environment Awards launch in Blenheim.

Molesworth next target? Molesworth and the Kaikoura mountains are one of eight sites identified by the Next Foundation as a potential target for pest control work. Foundation director Devon McLean spoke at the launch of this year’s Cawthron Marlborough Environment Awards, and says the 162,000 hectare area has been identified as the best representative site for the diversity of the east coast of the South Island. Work being done now at Mt Taranaki with local conservation and iwi groups will be used as a model for preserving other diverse ecological sites around the country, such as the Molesworth-Kaikoura site. The foundation is also working with Zero Invasive Predators at Bottle Rock Peninsula in Queen Charlotte Sounds, testing technology to get rid of rats, mustelids, and possums, or ’80 per cent of the trouble’. The group has a barrier across the neck of the 400 hectare peninsula and is testing out new ways of controlling and eliminating pest species. He says it gives him confidence the goal of making New Zealand pest-free by 2050 is achievable. Entries for the Cawthron Marlborough Environment

Awards are now open, and this year, they feature a new category aimed at showcasing sustainable use and care of the marine environment. Awards trust chairman Peter Jerram says the Awards are in their 22nd year of spreading the word about good environmental practice in Marlborough. “With growing awareness about the importance of the Sounds to the region the time is right to add this new Marine category, which is sponsored by Port Marlborough.” Potential entrants could include marine farms, community sewage schemes, fish enhancement projects and tourism companies. There are six other award categories - Farming, Forestry, Wine Industry Innovation, Landscape and Habitat Enhancement, Community Innovation and Business Innovation – and judges are looking for companies and projects that look after the environment and make efficient use of our natural resources. The Awards are supported by the Cawthron Institute, Marlborough District Council and local sponsors with winners receiving between $1000 and $3000. Entries close on September 30.

Bequest’s speedway legacy The bequest from a Blenheim man who died in a house fire six years ago has been used by Canterbury Museum to buy a significant collection of motorbikes and memorabilia belonging to the world’s greatest speedway rider, Christchurch man Ivan Mauger. At $1.7 million, to be paid over three years, the purchase is the museum’s largest-ever acquisition and the first funded by the Adson Trust, named after Arthur and his late wife, Marlburian June Adams. Arthur Henry Harrison, 92, died in a house fire on Blenheim’s McArtney St on November 15, 2009. He had substantial property interests in Blenheim and lived in the town for 70 years. No-one knows why the intensely private man left the $10 million bequest to the Canterbury Museum, the largest gift received by the Museum in its 146-year history. Arthur, a retired company secretary from Blenheim, specified that the money was to be used for additions to the Museum’s collections. Museum chairman Michael McEvedy says it is fantastic that one person’s generosity has enabled the Museum to

make such a significant purchase and to ensure that this marvellous collection which has so much meaning for Christchurch people, stays in the public domain. “The family have generously agreed to sell the collection for much less than they might have received on the open market as there is a huge worldwide interest in the collection.” The collection has been on loan to the Museum since 2007, the same year that Christchurch granted Ivan Mauger the Freedom of the City. Ivan Mauger is considered the best speedway rider of all time. He won more than 1000 international events in 60 countries and is still the only rider to win the World Speedway Championship in three consecutive years 1968, 1969 and 1970. In 1970, two American speedway fans, George Wenn and Ray Bokelman, said that if Mauger won his third world title in a row at Wroclaw, Poland, they would have the winning bike gold-plated. They delivered on their promise; it took 18 months and cost US$500,000.

Marlborough people need to check if they are eligible for help with their rates bill, especially if they are on lower incomes. The Marlborough District Council wants to ensure that all ratepayers eligible for help with their rates are aware of their entitlement. A rebate on household rates of up to $610, met by the Government, is available to some people, calculated on an applicant’s total income, number of dependents and the amount of the rates bill. Marlborough Mayor Alistair Sowman says he would hate to think that people are missing out on government support because they were unaware it was available. In recent years Marlborough had bucked the national trend; a growing number of people here were successfully applying for this central government rebate despite numbers declining elsewhere. However, recently, fewer Marlborough people have claimed the rebate. In the year to June 2016 the total paid out in rebates dropped below a million dollars compared with $1.02M the previous year, with 41 fewer people receiving the rebate. The average amount granted to a ratepayer in Marlborough was $534 – which is $21 less than the previous year. “We promote the rebate widely so I am concerned to hear that for some reason the number of claimants is falling.” Grey Power Marlborough’s president Brian McNamara says rates can be a worry for some people on limited incomes already struggling with power and phone bills. “The rebate can make a very big difference to someone on a fixed income and people should not be reluctant to apply,” he said. Grey Power is also urging family and friends of senior citizens to make sure the rebate is being taken up. More information about the rebate and the criteria, including a calculator, is available on the Department of Internal Affairs website.

Stepping out at top level Story and photo by Cathie Bell Leading young Marlborough rider Tessa van Bruggen rode her first Grand Prix dressage event and is looking to improve further. Te s s a i s o n e o f t h r e e Marlborough riders in the national equestrian development squad, along with Melissa Galloway and Sarah Wadworth, Marlborough Dressage Association chairwoman Leanne Andrews says. All three are doing ‘exceptionally well’, she says. Tessa says her ride on Sunday with Frodo was her first-ever test at Grand Prix level, the highest level for dressage. She is a fulltime rider, training with her mother Franzi van Bruggen-Smit on four horses this season. Tessa says her first Grand Prix was hard work, but while she sees lots to work on, the two

Both horse and rider need work on fitness, she says. The bad weather has stopped her riding as often as she’d like, and the storm last weekend cut into the training she’d hoped to do before the event on Sunday. “I’m very much looking forward to this season. I’m going to go hard and do my homework.” Tessa is competing with both Frodo and his son Stretch. “Stretch’s stepped up from level 5 to 7, that’s a big jump for all of us. “Frodo was level 6 last season and now he’s level 9, that’s another big jump.” She is focussed on dressage and is putting her riding first for a while. “I used to do everything as a kid, but when I was 14, I wanted to be competitive in dressage.” Tessa van Bruggen rides Frodo in her first Grand Prix at the Marlborough She was studying midwifery Equestrian Park. last year, but has put that on hold performed well in several areas. prove, but I needed to get my since she got into the develop“There is always room to im- feet wet.” ment squad.

Family thanked for generosity By Cathie Bell The contribution of the Gill family and Gill Construction to Marlborough’s horse community has a lasting reminder with naming rights to the new dressage area at the Marlborough Equestrian Park. The arena was opened on Sunday by Tony Gill on behalf of the family.

Park chairwoman Rose Prendeville says the Gills have given a huge amount of time and energy to the park, going well beyond what could have been anticipated. Tony says the company likes to do things for the community, and its trucks are nearby. The family is fond of horses, Gill Construction’s Tony Gill speaks at the ceremony to formally open the and he says his wife had a dressage arena at the Marlborough Equestrian Park, with park chairwoman pony when she was younger. Special Olympians win Story and photo by Glenise Dreaver A Marlborough team of 13 Special Olympians will represent the Canterbury/Upper South Island region in tenpin bowling at the 2017 New Zealand Special Olympics in Wellington in late 2017. The Marlborough team’s aggregated scores won them the honour, and the fundraising challenge, of competing at the two-yearly event to be held between November

28-December 2 2017. They will join 1500 other competitors in the capital. The Regional Games at which they qualified were held in Christchurch between July 23-24. The event featured tenpin bowling, indoor bowls, and powerlifting and it was the Marlborough tenpin team’s aggregated scores which From left: Samuel Claughton, James Tagoai, Gavin Hapeta and Philip Patel. won them the honour. Knockout Cup football delivers It went down to the wire but finally the football arm-wrestle went the way of the team of the season, Blenheim Valley United. After a stalemate at half time, Valley attacked on many occasions with Alex Connor-McClean getting caught offside but remaining confident. That went rewarded when James Mailama delivered the perfect ball for Connor-Mclean to slot home. City were not done, and some clever work in box by Guy Nolan

gave City a sniff, which Nolan could not convert from the spot after being fouled. Ironically 5 minutes later City’s pressure paid off. Brayden Hook from a set piece delivered a ball that was miscalculated by the keeper and Nolan was on hand to put away the loose ball. After a stale mate in extra time, it was City that faltered in the penalty shoot-out with United winning 5-3. In the knockout shield, it was Woodbourne who have enjoyed some recent good results with a

9 -1 romp over Picton Panel and Paint, while Central took care of Rangers Masters 4-1 in the knockout bowl, and the plate was won by Redwood Renegades who beat Redwood Masters 4-1.
