Ceramic daffodils ready for planting Continued from page 1 Local primary schools made around 3500 of the ceramic daffodils which had a metal stem attached, donated by Cuddon Ltd, and were then transported to Safe Air where Clive Harragan organised three working bees to paint all the stems and back of the daffodils. Daffodil Day co-ordinator Zoe Gray says the Society has been very lucky to have had a number of high profile New Zealanders support the project by each decorating a daffodil. The likes of John Key, Sir Graham Henry, Sir Richard Hadlee, Dame Suzie Moncrieff, Hilary Barry, Irene van Dyke, Sir Peter Jackson and Wayne Shelford are among the ‘celebrity decorators’. These daffodils will be on display

at Thomas’s until August 26 before being auctioned via Trademe. All of the other daffodils will be planted on Sunday August 21 from 10am onwards, just down from the Quality Hotel on Nelson Street, on the opposite side. Offering their help will be the Tasman Makos which will be filmed by Seven Sharp for their Monday evening show. The installation will be opened on Monday August 22 and the community will be invited to walk among the daffodils and pick one or two to take home for a suggested $20 donation per daffodil. “This project has been a couple of years in the making so we are so excited to be so close. We have had some amazing support from the

community to see this project come to fruition,” Zoe says. The celebrity daffodil auction

will be held between August 19-26 through TradeMe’s ‘Cool Auction’ items.

Southern Jam a blast By Cathie Bell Two Marlborough students won three of the 23 trophies awarded at the Southern Jam school jazz festival competition. The competition, one of the highlights of the Marlborough winter, started last Thursday and finished on Sunday. Organiser Katrina Lange from Marlborough 4 Fun says the festival was a ‘fantastic week’ with more schools, bands and venues involved. Increasingly popular were the performances in cafes throughout Blenheim and Picton. “All the restaurants and cafes have been packed to the rafters – such a wonderful thing to see during the winter months!” The gala concert on Saturday night sold out, and Katrina says it is a ‘world-class venue’ to hold events in,

“Students benefit so much from the week, the opportunity to perform at venues, participate in workshops and master classes with such highly revered Judges from the ARA Institute of Canterbury, and of course the competition element. There is no other festival of its kind or calibre in New Zealand. “All in all we are very proud of this event and what it has achieved on so many levels.” Katrina says organisers are ‘especially excited’ by local Marlborough Boys College student Jonty Zydenbos winning 2 awards, the Kevin Moseley Award for Most Outstanding Trumpet Jack McRae who won an award at Jonty Zydenbos, who won two awards. Player and the Marlborough 4 Fun Award for Best Soloist, and also Jack Southern Jam. The schools have had a fantastic McRae from Marlborough Boys enabling many more people to be able to be part of the audience that would time, she says, and many teachers College winning the Royal New otherwise have missed out if it had and students told her Southern Jam is Zealand Air Force Band Award for the highlight of their academic year. inbrief Data use surges

John Davis.

Brian Dawson.

Marlborough district households have more than doubled consumption of broadband data in the last 18 months driven by surging demand for streaming services such as Netflix, according to new statistics from Chorus. The average Marlborough home used 82GB of broadband data in June 2016 compared to 31GB in January 2015. “The figures show that faster broadband is now, more than ever, an essential part of many New Zealanders’ daily lives,” Chorus’ head of market insight Rosalie Nelson says.

Groups step up to host candidate meetings

By Cathie Bell The candidates are confirmed for the mayoral, district health board, and district council elections, and groups throughout Marlborough are setting dates for meetings so people can get to know who they are voting for. So far, the Marlborough Chamber of Commerce, Sport Tasman, Grey Power, and the Awatere Community Trust will host meetings. They are all to be in September, later in the month when postal votes open. All three elections are by postal ballot, using the Single Transferable Vote system which enables people to rank candidates in order of which ones they like the most. NZ Post is to deliver voting pa-

pers in the week from September 16 to September 21. All votes have to be received by noon on Saturday October 8, so they either have to be posted well in advance to get there in time, or physically dropped into the secure ballot box at the Marlborough District Council building in Blenheim. Chamber general manager Stephen Gullery says the chamber will host a business-focussed mayoral debate in mid-September. He is asking members to submit questions for candidates now. It will be an evening event, with dinner and debate at the Clubs of Marlborough and open to Marlborough Chamber of Commerce members only, Stephen says. The Awatere Community Trust

Passchendaele contest

is holding a ‘meet the candidates’ meeting in Seddon at 7.30pm on September 14 at the Awatere Memorial Hall. Organiser Lil Broadhurst says the meeting, for mayoral candidates and those in the Wairau-Awatere ward, will use a format where candidates make a short statement and then circulate around tables in a “speed-dating” style. Sport Tasman will be holding a mayoral forum on sport and recreation issues on September 21, organiser Kirsty Scammell says. The meeting, at a venue yet to be confirmed, will start at 7pm. Candidates will speak for five minutes each and then answer questions. Grey Power plans to host a series of meetings around the district, publicity officer Barbara Hutch-

inson says. There will be a Blenheim ward candidates meeting and a separate mayoral forum, she says, as well as ward meetings in Picton and Renwick. Dates have yet to be set but they will be in September. Grey Power meetings will be during the day which suits members better, Barbara says, but anyone is welcome to attend. There will also be a presentation by electoral officer Dean Heiford at the Blenheim meeting on how the STV voting system works, she says. “It’s about informing our members. We have a commitment to them and to the community…I believe in democracy, local body elections are so important.”

Year 13 students are encouraged to enter the 2016 Battle of Passchendaele Multi-Media Competition before the end of September. The Battle of Passchendaele was one of New Zealand’s most deadly conflicts during the First World War. On just one day — 12 October 1917 — more than 845 New Zealanders were killed and more than 2700 wounded. The winner will receive a $2000 education contribution and, along with the runner up, attend the Battle of Passchendaele centenary commemorations in Belgium in October 2017.

Funeral home installs defibrillator

Darren Peters with self-resetting pest trap.

Trapping talk By Angela Crompton Increasing numbers of New Zealanders want to preserve this country’s natural heritage, says Department of Conservation officer Darren Peters. Working with DOC’s General Policy group in Wellington, Darren advises community conservation groups and helps establish ground control trapping teams around the country. Tomorrow he will speak to Marlborough Forest and Bird members from 7.30pm in the Blenheim School hall. Conservation action across the country is growing exponentially, Darren says. “There’s a growing general worry that if we don’t as a country move to do something, we are going to lose a whole bunch of things.” Older people have seen whole species disappear in their lifetimes and Darren has personally watched bird populations like the yellow head (mohua) shrinking. But that trend can be reversed. Native bird song has increased in Wellington, thanks to successful community-based pest controls, and Darren says rats have been cleared from the Miramar Peninsula. Similar eradications in other regions will be assisted following a Government goal to make New Zealand pest-free by 2050. Darren won’t debate the pros and cons of 1080 poison drops that are part of many DOC pest eradication programmes. Instead, he points to new, sophisticated traps that allow greater areas of land to be protected with minimal labour. Two will be displayed on Thursday night to Forest and Bird. Prey lured to them is killed humanely; the traps self-reset and long-life bait means they can be left untended for up to six months. “It’s a pretty exciting time we have in conservation,” Darren says.

Story and photo by Celeste Alexander A funeral can be a difficult and stressful time and like any occasion where emotions are running high, the potential is there for a medical emergency. This is why Geoffrey T Sowman Funeral Directors in Blenheim has installed an AED (automated external defibrillator) unit in its chapel as a community service. The AED was supplied by St John, with its location uploaded into the 111 Emergency Call Centre database. Local manager Lloyd Bush says an item heard on air recently raised awareness of the importance of having medical support available in places of public assembly. “Heightened anxiety can potentially lead to a medical emergency. With the AED unit onsite our staff will be able to provide immediate help for the person until emergency

services arrive. “It’s something that people might have a bit of a giggle with, a funeral home installing this unit, but the reality is that we could have up to 160 people onsite and given the circumstances, it can be stressful,” he says. The Phillips AED unit installed is extremely reliable and the most commonly used around the world, according to advice given by St John. “They are also easy to use and all of our staff have received training from St John to give them confidence and peace of mind should they need to deploy the unit,” Lloyd says. As part of a wider community support initiative the location of the AED will also be included on a phone app, so if a medical emergency occurs out in the community people will be able to source the location and use the defibrillator if necessary, he says.

B-Man needing help himself By Cathie Bell He wrote and performed the rap songs that described Blenheim as the Boomtown and led the Gigatown campaign, but now Bradley Simmonds, ‘the B-man’, is in need of help himself. Friends are organising a themed charity event on Saturday at the Yard Bar for former Blenheim golf shop owner Bradley Simmonds. Brad can’t unfortunately make it to the event due to being diagnosed with a severe case of Myalgic Encephalopathy and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS). He says the disease is ‘really nasty’ and he is ‘pretty well housebound’ now. Organiser Bex Vuletich says Bradley is a ‘pretty extraordinary guy’. “Bradley Simmonds is a great mate to many, local thriving businessman, active in a number of sports and creative pursuits, all round witty, laugh a minute ball of energy and of course, known to many as local You Tube rap sensation B-Man with an impressive 11K views for his rap ‘Boomtown’.” She says Brad has been forced to move in with his parents in Tauranga in order to receive the day-to-day care that is required with his ME/CFS. “In Brad’s words, which always incredibly seem to be pretty damn glass half full considering...‘Life’s a party every day for me! Not always a good one though’.” She says despite his daily struggle to do most things others consider easy, Brad is working to raise funds to support the continuation of the Towards Wellness programme supporting CFS/ME sufferers. says. “Pretty wicked effort I say!” Yard Bar owner Joe Johnstone has offered to support Brad by throwing a party in his honour this Saturday, with the theme being one of Brad’s favourite eras, the 1980’s, Bex says. It is free entry and proceeds from selected drinks will benefit the ‘Towards Wellness programme’ which assists families and helps to aid suffers throughout their illness with research and services provided as required. A photo booth by Magic Moments is also available by gold coin donation. Bex enourages people to show support for Brad by ‘dressing up like you mean it’. “We look forward to seeing plenty of big wigs, heavy eyeliner, leggings, double denim, fluro jackets, leg warmers, shoulder pads, side pony tails, and fingerless gloves.... oh yes, and a whole lot of air guitar wouldn’t go astray either!”

Theatre traffic Dear Ed, The solution to theatre traffic etc is so simple, it beggars belief that they haven’t already done it. Make Hutcheson Street an entrance only and exit by Russell Terrace. The exit already exists. Make Russell Terrace a one way St and compensate business holders with free reserved parks under the tree line inside the car park. Leigh Maddison - Blenheim

Lost trampers Dear Ed, I see often in the paper lots of reports about people getting lost on our mountain tracks and bush walks. One person lately was not equipped for the cold weather. Honestly, it wouldn’t take much would it? The farmer who is ‘allowed to graze’ is expected to carry troughs around your property for you? The other answer is “sheep don’t need water”. SPCA knows about it, but says they can’t do anything - they only deal with small scale issues. Primary Industries did send an inspector to a couple of places I mentioned and said measures would be introduced. Wine NZ CEO says he was unaware of the practice and would put a note in the newsletter. Come on guys, show some respect and caring for your hard workers! Woolly lawnmowers Dear Ed, And yet another post wine harvest clean up is in progress. Isn’t it nice to see the sheep grazing on the grass for the vineyard owners? So where is the responsibility as land owners, farmers of the land you earn your living from, to provide the basic needs of those hard working sheep while they are on your property? This might come as a surprise to most people who travel past some of the big names of the wine industry (who must remain anonymous so their good name isn’t corked) that the sheep are not provided with water troughs. Yes I know this for a fact....I’ve asked them. The reply? “It’s up to the farmer, there is water there if he wants to set up a trough”. Brilliant pass the buck attitude.

Might keep walkers safe? Dear Ed, Due to the re-alignment of Hutcheson Street to accommodate the theatre the Council now realise they created a traffic hazard, most people could have pointed this fact out at the time the road was re-aligned. This of course will mean that the ratepayers will have to dig into their pockets to pay for this extra work required. Why could this extra work not have been carried out when the road re-alignment was being done? Was it due to any foresight by the councilors who initially agreed to the whole project to be underwritten by the Council? AKA RATEPAYERS. To locate a pedestrian crossing at Johns Street will place pedestrians in the centre of the road as the traffic speeds over the bridge blind to what lies ahead. A 30kph limit will do little, if anything to slow the traffic flow, also who will police it? Many times using the crossing by the library I have experienced traffic driving in front and behind me while still on the crossing, and this crossing is monitored by camera. KIWI

RSE drop-in centre starts ‘in weeks’

By Cathie Bell Crossroads will offer an RSE worker drop-in centre on Sundays, starting in a couple of weeks, coordinator Janette Walker says. Janette proposed the drop-in centre during a summit on industry labour needs last month, saying the workers, particularly those from overseas, needed more pastoral care in Marlborough. Using Crossroads as an RSE dropin centre on Sundays would cost about $150 a week, Janette says. She has found someone to employ to run the kitchen and manage the centre, and overheads such as electricity and gas use. Crossroads wasn’t open on Sunday, and that was generally the one day that RSE workers had off, she says. Since then, she followed up with Wine Marlborough which has agreed to make a contribution to get it up and running. Janette says she has a few things to sort out, but hopes to have the centre available in a couple of weeks. “It’s a little bit suck it and see how it works,” she says. Comedy movie night By Celeste Alexander The Marlborough Parent Centre is hosting a fundraising movie night next Thursday, August 25 to raise money for two new courses they are looking to run. The movie night will feature the premiere screening of ‘Bad Moms’, a comedy about three overworked and under-appreciated mothers who decide to go a little wild. MPC president Rebecca Toms says the evening is designed to be a light hearted, fun night out. “Money raised from the movie night will go towards our two new courses, Conscientious Parenting and Returning to Work. We will also have a raffle on the night for a pamper basket. “Get a group of friends together, come along and have a laugh and support us and the programmes we offer to the community,” she says. Tickets cost $16 per person and must be purchased prior to the night from Rebecca by emailing marlboroughparentcentre@gmail.com.

A life with motorcycles When it comes to motorcycles, it’s a combination of the excitement, challenge and freedom that entices people into the sport. For Blenheim man Peter Grinter it started as a hobby then became a business that he has been passionate about for most of his life. Peter talks to reporter Celeste Alexander about a life spent in the industry and what his plans are now he has sold his business. Born in Hamilton, Peter grew up around motorcycles and began riding at a young age. At the age of 15 he decided he’d had enough of school so his father advised him to find an apprenticeship before he left. He embarked on a motorcycle apprenticeship with a Yamaha dealership in Hamilton for a number of years before a newspaper job listing in Blenheim caught his attention. “A new Honda shop was opening on Main Street, where Access Mobility is now, so I applied and made the move in 1977.” Peter celebrated his 21st birthday then drove into Blenheim the very next day. He went into partnership with a good friend, opening Mainland Motorcycles on Main Street, where Guthrie Bowron is now located, then moved in 1990 after purchasing some land on Grove Road and building on it. The decision was made to buy his business partner out, then he and his wife Barbara renamed the business Peter Grinter Motorcycles. Peter took on the Kawasaki dealership for Marlborough in 1982 and did very well with it over the years. In fact, by the time he sold the business earlier this year he had been a Kawasaki dealer for 33 years, the longest serving dealer in the whole of New Zealand. “The next below me was 28 years. It’s a fantastic company to deal with and I became good friends with the owner, Mike Wilkins. “I had the pleasure of visiting the Kawasaki factory in Japan twice which is really rare and a huge privilege. They don’t allow visits often

so for a country to be shown through twice is a big deal. “It’s absolutely mind-blowing to see what they do. Watching the assembly line put a motocross bike together in 40 minutes is an experience in itself, as well as seeing everything else they do there. “Motorcycles are just 10 per cent of what Kawasaki make,” he says. Wanting to share his enthusiasm for motorcycles, he and friend Jason Kerr started up a local team called ‘Team Pygmy’. It was aimed at youth that couldn’t afford to get into the sport themselves. “We supplied the bikes and put them into a team situation. We did all the maintenance and all they had to do was turn up to race. It wasn’t even about winning, it was about them getting out and enjoying themselves,” he says. At one stage Peter had around 15 young riders and the team even saw some adults come through. In addition to selling and servicing motorcycles, Peter was also out riding, and at times competing at national competitions. He was part of a New Zealand team that competed in Australia for the Trans Tasman Challenge in the 1970’s which he described as being “a cool experience”, and went on to win New Zealand trials and motocross championships. As well as operating their business, Peter and Barbara also own a vineyard block, doing the majority of the work themselves.

“It’s been more of a hobby that I enjoy and it gets me outside,” he says. Earlier this year Peter decided to call time on his business and sold to Brendan Wadsworth, who owned Marlborough Trials Centre. Brendan has since amalgamated the two and formed Marlborough Motorcycles, carrying on the Kawasaki dealership to complement the CanAm he already specialises in. Peter has stayed on working part-time but

says his future plans will include some travel. “I’m looking forward to watching some overseas motorsport and next year I will be traveling to the United States to see my friend Jason Kerr. He has a couple of road bikes so we will go touring through the States and up through Canada. “I’m still busy, but just a different pace,” he peugeot .co.nz/308 laughs.

Enhance your life and your skin Over the last three years Dr David Orsbourn has become the go-to man in Marlborough for Varicose Vein treatment. His clinics at the the Churchill Private Hospital have grown in popularity, and David has met this demand with more frequent clinics over the years since he began practicing here. David finds that he no longer needs to spread the word about the walk in walk out vein treatments he performs, because his patients are doing it for him. He says, “People can’t believe the difference it makes, it’s quite literally life changing.” To the extent that David finds he is regularly treating family, friends and workmates of past patients who have seen the results from the non-invasive procedures he performs, and have consequently unveiled their legs for the first time in years! But David stresses, it’s not just about aesthetics, it’s also about relief from painful, heavy legs, which is often instantaneous following treatment. The treatments are designed to be fast, fairly pain free and totally effective. There are three simple post-treatment rules to follow; wear compression stockings, walk forty-five minutes a day and avoid immediate international air travel. The success of the Blenheim vein clinics has resulted in enhanceskin offering additional cosmetical services and treatments in Blenheim, with Cosmetic Botulinum and Dermal Fillers now conveniently accessible. Registered Nurse, Lacey Boyd, joined the enhanceskin team two years ago and has built up a loyal following of clients who love her gentle and calm approach. From September Lacey will be visiting Blenheim regularly to offer Marlburians the benefit of her expertise in facial aesthetics locally. At this time of year Lacey also helps

clients deal with sun-damaged skin; several clinic based treatments are offered to address pigmentation, red veins and other signs of aging that come from too much exposure to the sun’s harmful rays. Treatment options include Cosmetic Botulinum, Dermal Fillers, Liquid Facelift, Lip enhancement, Medi Facials, plus (available in Nelson only) IPL Skin Rejuvenation and Fractora Fractional Resurfacing. All solutions work hand-in-hand with Medical strength home skin treatments that offer results; lightened pigmentation, hydrated skin and a restored natural glow. Lacey assures us that any cosmetical treatment performed is tailored to enhance rather than alter a client’s features. She says, “Careful consideration of each person’s wishes, followed by an assessment of their individual muscles and requirements, allows me to tailor their treatment ensuring a totally natural and effective result.” Whichever cosmetic treatment a client decides upon, nobody knows what they are visiting enhanceskin for, it could be for a skin or vein assessment... so their secret to looking refreshed is safe. Friends and family will all notice how great an enhanceskin client looks, but nobody will know why!

The Skin Clinic Marlborough is equipped with high resolution digital mapping technology allowing early detection of melanomas and other skin cancers. Early diagnosis and prompt treatment can result in a complete cure from skin cancer. The clinic provides a comprehensive range of treatment options and is now approved by Southern Cross as an affiliated provider. Make an appointment today to have you and your family’s skin checked. Marlborough’s largest circulating newspaper with 18,535 copies

Ross Ayson, a customer, Jim Thomas and Stuart Tapp at the firewood dispenser on Taylor Pass Road. Photo by Lacy Rees.

Wood burns hot for Lions A new way of selling wood has seen sales run hot. The Lions Club of Blenheim introduced this ‘firewood dispenser’ on Taylor Pass Road, after a member saw a similar arrangement being used successfully overseas, spokesman Jim Thomas says. He says it has worked well here because members are able to fill the frame each day and customers can take as much as they wished and pay for it in the Honesty Box. “Initially the dispenser was

filled three days a week but the demand for the firewood was so good that we needed to fill it daily. This was done on a roster so that no members had an onerous task, and Sunday was a day of rest.” The wood comes from donated logs, Jim says, and also some logs that Lions purchased. “Unfortunately, the project for this year has to end because all the available wood has been used. The Lions Club is appreciative of the support by the people of Blenheim.”

Think at the railway tracks By Cathie Bell People need to stay alert and cross carefully at railway level crossing is the message of this year’s Rail Safety Week. The week, which began on Monday and runs until Sunday, hopes to combat a recent increase in trains’ collisions and near collisions with pedestrians because of distractions like cellphones and headphones, organisers say. In the past year there have been 61 near misses with pedestrians at level crossings across the country. In Marlborough, over the past five years, there has been one collision with a person, three with a heavy vehicle and two with light vehicles. There have been five near-collisions with a heavy vehicle, 10 with a light vehicle, and three with people. TrackSAFE NZ Manager Megan Drayton says people forget that when they approach a crossing they’re taking a risk. “They get used to signage and become overly familiar with the area. Complacency and distractions like cellphones and headphones mean that people often don’t consciously check for trains.” KiwiRail Chief Executive Peter Reidy says this year’s campaign has been developed as a result of an increasing trend in incidents involving pedestrians, particularly at urban level crossings. “What we are seeing, from data from collisions and near

collisions as well as reports from our train drivers and CCTV footage, is that people are failing to take due care when crossing at level crossings. “Sometimes people cross the tracks after a train has passed but while the alarms are still operating. What they don’t seem to realise is that there is often a train coming from the other direction. “There are also a number of incidents involving people wearing headphones and using mobile technology around crossings. We are urging people this year to stay focused and alert at level crossings, and to put their devices in their pockets at any time they are around the rail network.“ “The more familiar we are with an environment, the less attention we tend to give it. Collisions and near misses cause severe and lasting trauma for everyone involved,” says Mr Reidy. “This includes victims, their families, emergency services personnel and witnesses, and our train drivers and rail staff. “An alert mind is a safe mind. We encourage everyone to change their approach to crossings and avoid distractions.” Rail Safety Week is coordinated by KiwiRail in close partnership with TrackSAFE NZ, the Transport Agency, NZ Police, Auckland Transport, Transdev Auckland, Greater Wellington Regional Council and Transdev Wellington.

United celebrates 50 years Sport inbrief of netball in the region

Games cancelled

Story and photo by Celeste Alexander Ten years ago the Sun featured a story on the United Netball Club celebrating its 40th anniversary, and now the club is back with another special milestone. The United Netball Club celebrates 50 years of netball this Saturday with a dinner shared by past and present members. There will also be a special mention made for late members including founders Betty Woodham and Noelene Nicholas. Their husbands will be attending in their honour. The club was originally known as the United Basketball Social Club, formed in 1966 by an enthusiastic bunch of women. Betty was elected the first president and continued to be involved with the club as a player and coach until 2003 and as a supporter until 2013. In 1969 the name ‘basketball’ became netball, therefore changing the name to United Netball Club. In its 50-year existence there have been many triumphs involving teams and players, something that will be highlighted at Saturday’s dinner, club member and daughter of

Many winter sport games were cancelled last Saturday because of bad weather. Storm fronts moved up the country throughout the day bringing cold, wind, and torrential rain. Glenn Kirby’s football column will resume next week.

Rowers return

The Rio Olympics have been difficult for the three Marlborough rowers competing. Sophie MacKenzie, Robbie Manson and Tom Murray return home without a medal in what was a difficult regatta for Kiwi crews on the Rodrigo de Freitas lagoon.

The United Netball Club is celebrating 50 years of netball this weekend. Maxine Rapley, Shirley Hocquard and Annette Pickering were busy putting together photo boards this week. Betty, Shirley Hocquard says. “We had two players go on to be provincial tournament representatives, Kim Sutherland and Alison Win, as well as a number of players who represented Marlborough in age group rep teams,” she says. “The club’s biggest year was in 2009 when we had 12 teams. Now we are back to two senior teams and one college team being a close small group enjoying Saturday netball. Currently playing for the club are United Main-

freight in grade two, United Makana in grade four and college girls in United Marlborough. Shirley and a group of club members, including president Maxine Rapley and fellow life member Annette Pickering, have been busy preparing photo boards and memorabilia to share with those attending. Annette and Shirley first joined the club in 1975 when it took under its wing two college teams and are still quite involved with the club today. Annette played until 2005

Paddon ready to learn Hayden Paddon says he’s looking forward to continuing to improve his performance on tarmac surfaces as he and co-driver John Kennard compete in the German World Rally Championship round this coming weekend. The 18-21 August running of ADAC Rallye Deutschland, the first of four consecutive tarmac WRC events, represents the fourth time the Kiwi pair has competed in what’s regarded as the most difficult asphalt event of the season, but it’s only the second time Paddon and Kennard have competed in Germany in a WRC car. “I have competed in something like 150 gravel rallies in my life and maybe only seven tarmac rallies. It does require a different driving style and technique and this is something I need to adapt to.

“The recent track and simulator work has helped a lot.” Paddon says he’s looking forward to the opportunity to improve on tarmac. Based in the city of Trier in the west of Germany, Rallye Deutschland features 306km of competitive action over 18 stages, just two hours from their headquarters in Alzenau. Friday sees competitors tackle five tests, four of which are in the vineyards of Mosel followed by the new Ollmuth stage, just south of Trier. Saturday is the longest day of the rally with just under 150 competitive kilometres including two runs over Panzerplatte Lang at 40.8km each. Just four stages on Sunday are split between the Mosel vineyards and the Sauertal test in the Eifel hills near the Luxembourg border, which acts as the power stage for the second and final run.

Woodbourne half a drawcard By Cathie Bell The Woodbourne Half Marathon is on this Sunday, and organisers say it is as popular as ever. Organiser Lindsay Norriss says numbers are looking similar to last year, when they had 150 compete in the half marathon, 160 in the 10km event and 130 in the 5km event. Alan Bryson, from Nelson, won the half marathon last year and has entered again to defend his title, Lindsay says. Potential competitors still have a chance to take part with entries taken on the day

The Walking Access Commission is calling for nominations for people and organisations that have made a significant contribution to outdoor access in New Zealand. The commission’s awards recognise those who have made significant and lasting contributions to public outdoor access, whether through securing new legal access, championing public rights of access, trail building, or contributing to understanding of access rights and responsibilities. Commission head Eric Pyle urges Marlburians to put forward nominees, saying the awards are a way of strengthening the country’s walking access heritage.

up to 30 minutes before race start times, Lindsay says. The Woodbourne Golf Club will be open for registration and late entries from 7:30am till 09.45am The half marathon walk and hybrid starts at 9am, the half marathon run starts at 10am, and the five and 10 km fun run/walks start at 10.15am. The event starts and finishes opposite the Woodbourne gymnasium at the air force base, and is along both sealed and unsealed roads through vineyards in some areas.
