Stacey’s cancer journey Story and photo by Celeste Alexander Twenty nine year old Stacey Scollard is a cancer survivor and is donating her time to volunteering today for Daffodil Day, Cancer Society Marlborough’s major fundraiser. One year ago Stacey found a lump in her neck. She wasn’t experiencing any other symptoms and blood tests were clear so she never anticipated that she had cancer.

Cancer survivor volunteers for Daffodil Day Continued from page 1 She revisited her doctor who referred her to an ears, nose and throat specialist in Nelson. A biopsy was done on her lump and she returned home and waited for the results. Stacey, a logistics manager at Allan Scott Family Winemakers was at work when she got the phone call to say she had been diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. “I went completely blank when I got the phone call. I was just trying to comprehend what was happening. “I think it was because my blood tests were clear and I wasn’t feeling any different that I assumed it wasn’t cancer, so I had to convince myself that yes I did have cancer. “The first thing I did was go into the office and tell my work colleagues then I phoned my father and partner and went home. “From that point everything

felt like it went so fast,” she says. Stacey received her diagnosis on a Wednesday and the following Tuesday she was in Nelson having surgery to remove most of the tumour. She had a scan done to detect further tumours and it was then that a second one was found in her chest. On December 17 of last year Stacey had her first chemotherapy treatment which she went on to have every fortnight for six months. It wasn’t something she was going to let slow her down though, she openly spoke about her cancer, continued working and preparing for her wedding to husband Dean. “I had my eighth treatment two days before my wedding. The oncology nurses were so nice to me and decorated the chair I sat in for chemo with balloons and a bride-to-be badge, it was a really nice

super accommodating and understanding the whole way through, the oncology nurses and the team at the Cancer Society. “If there’s anything that people can take away from my story, it’s that if something doesn’t feel right go and get it checked out,” she says.

Getting rid of pests and predators By Cathie Bell Increased predator control will make Marlborough environments safer and more attractive for threatened species, conservationist Will Parsons says. As part of Conservation Week, Will and Rose Parsons will be kickstarting their spring trapping program around their wetland with Forest and Bird’s rodent traps as well as homemade drain traps. “We will welcome anyone who would like to join Will on his rounds on Saturday 17th of September, weather permitting.” Conservation week is 10th to the 18th of September.

Will says predator trapping is the number one priority for them at the moment. “With spring coming, we need to start as soon as possible getting rid of rats, mice, stoats, and ferrets who will compete with the birds. “We’re hoping for a good nesting season.” Will says fernbirds and Australian bitterns have been seen in the wetlands. At the trapping day, people need to bring gumboots and warm clothes, he says. “A gold coin donation to our wetland is appreciated. “We will have a small number of Forest Will Parsons with a trap to catch predators such as stoats. and Bird traps for sale.”

Industry needs to police labour issues itself: MBIE By Cathie Bell Labour issues were the hot topic at this year’s Romeo Bragato conference, with the wine industry being told it needs to do more to protect its reputation. Labour’s primary industries spokesman Damien O’Connor says the industry has ‘so much to celebrate’ and it leads in many ways, but its reputation is threatened by breaches of labour standards. “This is a really important issue. “If there are people abusing staff, not paying them, no-one should employ them in any form: contractor, direct employee, or otherwise.” He says four labour inspectors should be based permanently in Marlborough to ensure high visibility of monitoring. “We don’t want the lowest common denominator dragging everyone down.” However, Ministry of Business, Innovation, and Employment labour inspectorate general manager

The industry cannot isolate itself

from the brand risk of this, he says. Globally, adherence to labour standards is becoming more important, particularly to retailers and consumers of premium products. It means the industry has to tell the right story – it has to keep employment records and it has to take ownership of the whole industry. “People will use any old excuse to put up market barriers. You’ll find fungus getting in the inside of a wine bottle rather than the outside of a fruit.” While there is ‘a tension’ between the current situation and the industry’s international reputation, George says there is a will in the industry to tackle the issue. If the industry ‘owned it’, it can be leveraged into something valuable for the industry and New Zealand as a whole, he says. “The global market is awash with knock offs and rip offs. We’re the genuine article. There’s real value in integrity.”

week, saying it had carried out an operation in Marlborough with 10 contractors, and nine were in breach, two seriously, naming the two as Ajay Gaur’s Vinestrength and Double Seven Services, owned by Qin Zhang. Ajay’s advocate Susheel Dutt says the ministry is

targeting the vulnerable ethnic contractors. No written information about breaches has been provided to Ajay, he says, and it is unfair for the ministry to target him. He says he plans to challenge the ministry and will complain to the Government. Ministry regional la-

Defence Minister Gerry Brownlee says 25 per cent of the value of the contract will be carried out by Safe Air and two other New Zealand companies, as Boeing upgrades the air force’s underwater surveillance and reconnaissance capability on six Orion. Having an underwater surveillance capability deters interference with the sea lines of communication that New Zealand and many of its friends rely on for trade purposes, Gerry says. Honey cafe gets resource consent

By Cathie Bell Taylor Pass Honey Co has council permission to build and run a cafe at its new site at the start of Taylor Pass Road near the Boulevard on Taylor housing subdivision. Chief financial officer Kelvin Deaker says the company is ‘very pleased’ to get resource consent for the cafe, but has yet to set a date for when it will open. He says the company is pleased the council has recognised what could be on offer at the site, combining a honey education centre, shop, and cafe. A resource consent is needed as the site, the old Solly’s Lollies factory, is zoned industrial, and while retail is allowed, permission is required to operate a café. The company’s resource consent application says Taylor Pass Honey Co has built up an enviable reputation for offering excellent products. “It is a destination now for locals and tourists alike and the

cafe is simply offering another choice experience for the visitor whilst they purchase goods or watch a live hive demonstration. It is hard to see how a new cafe, in a new purpose-built facility can have any effect on the immediate locality or wider environment.” The company’s resource consent application says parent company Apitech Limited purchased and took possession of the site at 12 Taylor Pass Road in April this year, to rationalise its administration, processing, storage and retail activities on to one central site closer to Blenheim. “The move will allow dedicated space for a larger shop, cafe and live hive demonstration facility within the new development. A recent rebranding of the company has been undertaken in conjunction with the purchase of 12 Taylor Pass Road.” The company is keeping its site at 829 Taylor Pass Road where its apiarists are based, and it allows the apiarists to expand

Formerly known as Smoove Cafe, the newly refurbished business is set to open early next week. Owner Glenda Francis-Kundycki is excited to launch the new look and range of food she will be offering. “I’ve always wanted to focus on juices so decided to do it and relaunch in time for spring. I’m excited to have a new point of difference and I’m looking forward to customers coming in and seeing the

changes,” she says. There is one surprise Glenda is holding close to her chest, one she insists will prove popular as it has yet to be introduced to Blenheim. Pulp Plus Cafe will specialise in juices, salads, wraps, sandwiches, buns as well as some of the old favourites, “I will still be serving coffee, smoothies and bagels but now customers will have the choice of salads and make their own sandwiches and buns. Glenda has owned the business for 18 months located downstairs in The Forum Building in Blenheim.

COUNCIL NEWS Rescheduled Environment Committee Meeting

What’s going on at the Blenheim Transfer Station

September 2016

In case you hadn’t noticed, we are building a new facility that is designed to deal with the community’s waste. So, rather than dumping your rubbish into one of the big blue bins and then sending it to landfill, we will now be sorting through what you throw out and trying to recover materials for re-use or recycling. Opening date at the new Wither Road facility is set for 1 November 2016. As we get closer to opening day we will be providing more information, in print, on the radio and on our website, explaining how it will operate.

Notice is hereby given, pursuant to section 46 of the Local Government Official Information and Meetings Act 1987, of the following meeting of the Marlborough District Council. This meeting is open to the public and interested persons are welcome to attend. Copies of the agenda will be available online and at Council’s Office, 15 Seymour Street. Environment Committee – Rescheduled Meeting Date Thursday, 13 September 2016 at 9.00 am The time and date may be subject to change, please contact Nicole Chauval, Committee Secretary, Ph: 03 520 7400 for confirmation.

BBQ for bargain hunters There’s a community BBQ facility at Blenheim’s Re-use shop which is available to community groups and individuals who want to sell sausages as a fundraiser. Bargain hunters have discovered that Blenheim’s Re-use shop is a great place to find recycled building materials, fixtures and fittings, furniture, kitchenware, lawnmowers or toys – it’s a second-hand treasure trove – so it is a busy place at the weekend with about two hundred customers each day. Book the use of the BBQ on-line or by contacting the Council, PH: 03 520 7400. It’s available to schools, charities and community groups – there’s no charge although some rules do apply. Re-Use Shop - Wither Road; 8.00 am - 4.30pm Monday to Friday and 10.00 am - 4.00 pm at the weekend. Community BBQ may be run up until 3.30 pm. More details on the Council website for anyone wanting to book the use of the BBQ: www.marlborough.govt.nz/ Our-Community/Community-FundraisingSupport

The Coming Age of Restoration – Free public lecture The Opening Ceremony of the Rio Olympics had the poignant symbolism of each team carrying a seedling to represent the coming Age of Restoration. People all around the world are now planting millions of trees to capture carbon and to restore biodiversity. Here in Aotearoa New Zealand, Dr Colin Meurk has helped lead the way, planting tens of thousands of native plants over the last 30 years. Dr Meurk is a senior ecologist at government research institute Landcare Research specialising in bio-geography, ecological restoration and design, landscape dynamics, urban ecology and conservation biology. He has been a consultant ecologist for the Christchurch rebuild, and is involved with community restoration projects. We are lucky enough to have Dr Meurk in Blenheim on Tuesday 30 August and he has kindly offered to give a talk to the community on the vital role of healthy biodiversity for healthy neighbourhoods and nationhood. Dr Meurk will bring his local and global experience to focus on the value, condition and trend of New Zealand’s unique natural heritage. He will discuss how our unique nature can be an integral part of our neighbourhood and nationhood, so that future generations will be able to experience it and ensure we will always have a genuine sense of belonging to our whenua. Come along to the Blenheim School Hall at 7:30 pm on 30 August 2016 to hear Colin talk. Free of charge – All welcome

We have opened up a dedicated email in case you have any questions: wastesor tingcentre@ marlborough.govt.nz. This new facility DOES NOT replace the existing resource centre, Re-use shop, salvage yard or e-waste facility. These will all continue to operate as usual. Find out more about the new waste sorting centre on the Council website at www.marlborough.govt. nz/Ser vices/RecyclingResource-Recover y/ Commercial-IndustrialSorting-Facility 12 weeks to go until Opening Day!

For rubbish suitable for sorting you’ll drop it on to a conveyor belt – rather than dropping it into a blue bin

Check before you step Now that road works have got a sign that reads: “Check before you step” and painted them at New World entrances, maybe a good idea to paint these signs at all of the much debated ‘courtesy crossings’ too.

Amazing airline Thank you to local airline What an amazing community resource! Supporting people like no other airline would. Unpredictable I use the Taylor River Reserve to walk my dog. In the past two weeks, I have witnessed two dogs getting hit by speeding cyclists. Archaic practice The wet muslin cloth that two cafes in town place over their sandwiches is not a good look and a health risk. Maybe the MDC Health inspector should take swabs. Be interesting to see what nasties he would find growing as everyone has to pick up the muslin and replace it, even just to look. Many, sometimes unclean, fingers touch the muslin then it is dropped back onto the food. They would sell much more without the wet rag. Both places great apart from that.

Reduced To One Lane Last week there was a function at the conference centre in Fell Street. Cars were parked both sides of Fell Street from State Highway 1 to Vickerman Street. This reduced Fell Street to a single lane only which is a traffic hazard. When is Marlborough Roads going to address this on-going issue. It is not rocket science to paint a yellow line one side of the road. Could save an accident waiting to happen.

Car for a week Story and photo by Celeste Alexander Blenheim woman Fiona Cummins will be driving around in a brand new Hyundai Tucson Elite for a week after winning a competition held by the Clubs of Marlborough. Fiona attended the recent Club’s open day and signed up to be a member. As part of the open day promotion, those who signed up for memberships went into the draw to win a week with the Hyundai, courtesy of Mayfield Motorworld. Fiona says the week before the open day she had signed up to join the Marlborough Bridge Club and decided to have a look at the other clubs that operated out of the Clubs.

“We had a wonderful guided tour and were interested in some of the other clubs so we joined,” she says. When she received the phone call to say she had won a week with the Hyundai, she was “ecstatic”. “I have only won one competition before, and that was for some tickets. This is so much bigger than that,” she laughs. “I’m so thrilled and can’t wait to try out the heated seats on this cold miserable day,” she says. Hyundai sales manager Mike Godsall says Mayfield Motorworld was happy to support the Clubs of Marlborough. “We are pleased it went to someone so excited as Fiona,” he says.

T he Wa irau Diversion clean-up will get underway on Saturday 3rd September at 9.00am starting at the Diversion Bridge on Neal Road. “We are a city on wheels and are keen to harness the power of association members in all 25 areas across New Zealand to make a difference to our country” Looking to the future, Ross says that while the Spring Clean project is timed for just one month, the big picture is for association members to take this project to their hearts. “I can see the day in the future when members will whip on their spring clean reflective vests and do a tidy-up wherever they see it’s needed i.e. as some members do already, picking up rubbish they might see in rest areas where they have stopped for a cuppa.”

Seed secrets

Anchor sparkles Story and photo by Cathie Bell Crewmen from visiting navy frigate Te Mana have cleaned and re-painted the anchor in the forecourt in front of the Clubs of Marlborough building in Blenheim. Tom Byl, Victor Grimshaw, and Potini Soutar-Nicolson (pictured) gave the anchor a spruce-up on Wednesday morning, under the supervision of Joe McIntosh and Naval Association president Barry Rolton.

Rikstay Auto • Exhaust • Lubes • Budget Priced Tyres • Batteries

Te Mana is visiting Picton for a few days as part of the Navy’s celebration of its 75 years’ anniversary. It is expected to leave today or late yesterday. Joe says this group was the only one that has come off the ship to do some community work. “Barry wanted some-one to come down and give the anchor a touch-up. “We had the gear and so have come down for the morning.”

With the weather starting to settle we are beginning to get the spring feeling and for gardeners that means a start to gardening and growing for the new season. Most plants come from seeds which makes them the most economical way to obtain the plants we would like to grow. If each year you grow a variety of a vegetable, then allow one good one to seed, collect the seed, plant that the following season, repeat each season with fresh seed from the last season you will have developed a strain of seed that is perfect for your growing conditions. There are certain larger seeds along with seeds of root crops (carrots & parsnips) these two must always be grown from seed where they will mature as they do not transplant successfully. Beans and peas should be grown from seed for best results not from transplants. Likewise pumpkin, melons and cucumbers are big enough seeds to handle easy and should be sown where they will grow. There is a trick you can use to assist better germination which is either spraying or soaking the seeds in a solution of Magic Botanic Liquid (MBL). The product certainly helps germination. If the soil temperature in your garden is under 10 degrees, then germination will be more erratic or not at all. To overcome this, make a trench about 80mm deep and 60mm wide, mow your lawn and put the clippings of grasses into the bottom of this trench making a compacted layer about 50mm deep. Over this, put 10mm of top soil or compost, sprinkle Neem Powder, Rok Solid, garden lime, BioPhos and sheep manure pellets. Cover with a little more compost and then space out your peas/beans (sweet peas also) along the row and either spray with MBL if not pre-soaked over night

in the same. Cover with more compost and lightly water down. The heat from the decomposing grass clippings will warm the soil, aid germination plus provide food for the soil life and plants. The same can be used for early crop of kumara, potatoes, and in the mounds for pumpkin and melons. If you are germinating your seeds in trays or punnets, then buy a heat pad so you have good under heat. Place the heat pad onto a polystyrene sheet so all the heat is directed upwards. Mist the seeds with MBL before covering and use purchased compost to fill the trays, sieving some to cover the top of the compost for the seeds to sit on and to cover them after spraying. As soon as the first germination appears, move the tray to the glasshouse or into a drawer outside with glass over so they have natural overhead light. If not they will stretch and likely fail. Keep moist but not wet by misting. When plants are ready to transplant, spray with Vaporgard a couple of days before lifting, then transplant.

Father’s Day Sunday 4 September 2016

‘A father is neither an anchor to hold us back, nor a sail to take us there, but a guiding light whose love shows us the way’ - Author unknown

Sweet treats, coffee and steak for Dad’s day Put together a selection of your father’s favourites When it comes to finding a gift for Father’s Day it can sometimes be a little tough. The old ‘socks and jocks’ gift may have run its course in your household with your father owning several drawers full of underwear now, so why not get him something unique this year? Something he wouldn’t expect and that he can enjoy with the family. Sure, your father would be happy with a pat on the back and cuddle from each family member, but it’s your chance to treat him to something he’ll really love. Here are some gift ideas for many different types of dads, from the outdoorsman, whiskey appreciator and health nut. Grill master set He’ll be all set for summer grilling with a package that’s filled with barbecue essentials. Fill a basket with different rub variations, sauces and even his favourite cut of meat from the butcher. Coffee selection If your father enjoys his caffeine fix, treat him to a selection of coffee beans from your local friendly roaster. If you don’t have a coffee machine at home then put together a hamper of flavoured instant coffee that he can enjoy at home, work or on the run. You could include butterscotch, caramel, and vanilla for the morning, a dark roast for a particularly early wake-up call, and a mellow

Father’s Day poem

decaf for after dinner. Sweet treats Who doesn’t love sweets? Put together a selection of your father’s favourite sweet treats for him to enjoy. You could get creative and try baking him some treats. For the fit Dad Sure, coffee might be his morning beverage

of choice, but you can help him stay healthy by getting him hooked on a slightly more nutritional option: fresh juice. Homemade juice has several health benefits and will help him avoid those commercial juices, which often have a lot of added sugar. Buy him a juicer and join him in the kitchen to create some family favourites.

A Father means so many things... An understanding heart, A source of strength and support right from the very start. A constant readiness to help In a kind and thoughtful way. With encouragement and forgiveness, No matter what comes your way. A special generosity and always affection, too. A father means so many things when he’s a man like you.... Author: Unknown

Celebrations all around the world Father’s Day Festival has gained amazing popularity over the years. The festival is considered to be a secular one and while it started in the United States, it’s celebrated around the world including in New Zealand, and many other nations, though on different dates.

All the world over people take Father’s Day as an opportunity to thank father sand pay tribute to them. On this day children present Father’s Day cards not just to their dads but also grandfathers, uncles, stepfathers or any other person who commands the position of a father in their life.

There is also a trend to present Father’s Days gift to dad, most popular of all being necktie. Many people rue that the trend of presenting gifts to fathers has led to over commercialisation of the festival relegating the noble idea behind the Father’s Day celebrations.

Kaikoura is a marine lovers paradise with marine mammal encounters available all year round above, on and below the water. Children inspired by daffodils On Wednesday the children at Little Footsteps viewed the clay daffodils on the Taylor Reserve. When they returned to the centre they talked about the daffodils then set about creating their own using a variety of materials.

They drew from their experience of visually seeing the clay daffodils and pictures of daffodils and were able to express their ideas onto paper and three dimensional daffodils. Today the children and teachers have dressed up in yellow to celebrate Daffodil Day.

Snags a hit from new barbecue Story and photo by Celeste Alexander Sausages, burgers and pikelets were served yesterday from a brand new mobile barbecue which was designed and built for the Vintage Car Club. Club president Lyall Mooney described it as being a ‘one-off Rolls Royce model of a barbecue only to be seen in Blenheim’. He spoke to a group of people who turned out for its launch and to sample a hot lunch cooked from it. The stainless steel fold out barbecue is mounted onto a trailer and capable of being towed. It was built by engineers Charlie Roger and Murray Jacques Lyall Mooney, Murray Jacques, Charlie Roger and Les Broughton who were sitting at the smoko trying out the new barbecue built for the Vintage Car Club. ing barbecue which had to be table a year ago ‘twiddling their they could do. when members travelled away had fallen apart and Charlie, being a club member, decided it would be a good idea to build a new one. It was built at the CF Roger Ltd premises on Sutherland Terrace and was supported by a number of businesses who put in time and resources to help with the build. “A big thanks to A Martella, Crown Stainless Systems, Blacks Fasteners, Rob Rosselli and Rob Uddstrom for their contributions,” Charlie says. It’s been a year long in the making but the Vintage Car Club is thrilled with the finished product. “I was gobsmacked with what I saw, a bright shiny creation on wheels,” Lyall said during his speech.

The joy of silver and bronze sports

I am usually a ‘gold medal or bust’ kind of guy, but some of New Zealand’s most impressive medals at the Rio Olympics were of the silver and bronze variety. As a country, we targeted 14 medals - we got 18. For me, I would have liked a couple more golden moments than the four we had but impressive feats came in the form of podium placings anyway. Nick Willis’ bronze in the 1500m was gritty considering he’s now the oldest man to medal in the event at 33. Willis’ analytical approach paid dividends, his intensity unrivalled. Lunula Jones’ silver in the kayaking was extraordinary. Ranked 28th in the world, he probably shocked himself.

Tom Walsh’s bronze in the men’s shot put was special too. The Timaru boy, who was just as talented with a rugby ball or cricket bat, chose to pursue Olympic glory instead of the more financially lucrative options and just got his first dividend. However, the most captivating moment was Eliza McCartney’s bronze in the women’s pole vault. The 19-year-old has burst on the scene in less than 12 months and got a medal in an event, as New Zealanders, we have no real history in. The most appealing aspect of her journey though was how easy it was to see she was having fun. She smiled throughout the competition and seemed to embrace the pressure rather than let it

affect her. Everything she did and said seemed genuine. McCartney came across humble, thanking her coaches, family and fellow New Zealanders, not because that was the politically correct thing to do but because she meant it. She has similar engaging qualities as former Silver Fern Irene van Dyk. Everyone should aspire to be like her and quite frankly, if you are a guy, she’s like the kind of girl you’d happily bring to the family dinner table and introduce to your parents. Who knows, in Tokyo in four years time, some of those podium medals may have a more golden tinge to them.

Last year’s winner Alan Barnes entered to defend his title but finished third.

Tussock Run two days away By Celeste Alexander We are only two days away from the annual Tussock Run. Online entries closed last night but if you have yet to enter, don’t despair because entries can still be taken on the day. This is the fifth year that the Tussock Run has been held and is a major fundraiser for the Seddon School. It’s also proved to be a popular event with people out of the region, who enjoy coming to the Awatere and taking in the scenery during the day. Starting and finishing at the school, the event has three stages for people to enter into, a 5km, 10km and 15km walk/run. Before, during and after the run there is entertainment for all the family including bouncy castles for children to play on, live music from Accoustic Boom Town and a Scottish Highland Pipers group that will be performing out on the course. New to this year’s format is the introduction of stalls. Seddon School students have created stalls where they will be selling products they have made and offering face painting and a beauty parlour. A number of the event’s sponsors will also have stalls and Mr Whippy will be there on the day serving icecream, a BBQ stand will be operating as well as a Mexican food van. Gates open at 8am and the event winds up at 1pm. Money raised from the Tussock Run entry fees, auction and raffles will go towards the school’s sustainability initiatives.
