Story and photo by Cathie Bell St Mary’s School principal Alister Bridgman is moving to Auckland and will finish up at the school at the end of this year. After 15 years at St Mary’s, he says he is sad to leave the school community and Marlborough, but his new opportunity at St Joseph’s School in Takapuna will be an exciting new challenge. Principal moving for family and new learning challenge Continued from page 1 Alister and his wife Victoria are to move to Auckland at the end of the year, and he will begin as principal of St Joseph’s in Takapuna, on Auckland’s north shore. It will be different for him, moving from Blenheim’s only Catholic primary school with about 180 pupils, where 20 per cent of students are Pasifika, 20 per cent are Maori, and 50 per cent are European, to a school of 380 students, where 40 per cent are Asian and 50 per cent European, in a community learning group of five Catholic primary schools and two Catholic secondary schools. “We have a lovely school, lovely students and staff here who I’ve worked with for a very long time.” Having been at St Mary’s for 15 years, Alister says he’s loved watching the children grow from five year-olds to 13 year-olds.

“They’re central to everything I do and think about.” He has also enjoyed the school becoming more and more multicultural in the time he’s been there. “It’s exciting, both in the diversity for everyone in the school and also the challenge around supporting English as a second language speakers in their learning. “We’re a community that represents New Zealand in a little small space. I think that’s really cool.” He is sad about the move, but it is driven by family, Alister says. “Family is the key. Our family have grown up and left home, Victoria has her father up there, our daughter is up there and there is easy access to our sons. That’s number one.” The new job is also exciting. St Joseph’s has a new two and a half storey modern learning environment building, which is essentially two

long floors of open space. “That will be really exciting. It’s different to what I’ve experienced.” Alister says he has been studying authentic learning and modern learning environments as part of university study and he is really looking forward to working with staff and students to put it into action. The Community of Learning in Marlborough – a grouping of schools working together to provide education in a better way – is also exciting and a project he will really miss. “I’m going to really miss the students and staff and the Marlborough Principals’ Association, which is a really unique collegial learning environment. “I’ve been lucky enough to be involved in various education environments around the country and Marlborough is certainly outstanding in that.”

He has spent 15 years at St Mary’s in Blenheim. “I have another dozen or so to go, so it’s good to have a new step in my career, some new challenges. “Victoria and I, once we realised the kids have gone, we had to make a decision about whether to stay here and retire here, or try something new. “We’ve moved around the country, we have lived in Tokoroa, Wellington, Geraldine, Dunedin, here, so we like going to new places, new environments, new challenges, but the key one to this is family…So we’re going to Auckland.” Auckland is not completely new to the couple, as Victoria grew up there, and the couple met there. “We know what we’re expecting… There won’t be weather like this up there.”

More inspectors not the answer By Cathie Bell Contractors need to do better for their workers or there will be sanctions, Workplace Relations and Safety Minister Michael Woodhouse says. In a visit to Blenheim yesterday, he talked with contractors and wine industry staff and says the industry has much to be proud of. However, it was extremely disappointing that nine of 10 non-RSE vineyard contractors in a recent investigation were breaching employment standards, he says. Labour inspectors could be based in Blenheim fulltime, but that was not his decision, Michael says. “I have checked with the labour

inspectorate about it and they say it’s not necessary, they are confident they can deliver what’s needed.” While some policing of employment standards needs ‘boots on the ground’, the inspectorate are confident they can do that by moving in and out nimbly from Christchurch or Nelson, he says. “This is an industry-wide issue, it’s not just the contractors’ problem. The region’s reputation is affected by good sustainability practices, good employment practices. “I’d rather not wave a big stick but we can.” Access to international workers is a privilege, not a right, he says.

Theatre future looking better as sponsors pop up Story and photo by Cathie Bell The ASB Civic Theatre is breaking even, a report to council says, and new sponsors are coming forward to help it get finished. T h is we ek , PA K’nSAV E Blenheim owner-operators Mark Elkington and Andrea Boock have stepped forward to become major sponsors of the kitchen to be built in the ASB Civic Theatre Marlborough. The couple have made a 10-year commitment to fund catering facilities at the theatre in exchange for naming rights for the kitchen. That sponsorship means the theatre trust can equip the kitchen with the appliances and equipment necessary for professional caterers to use it to cater for events at the theatre. Event organisers will have the option of using caterers from the next-door convention centre or bringing in independent caterers. Yesterday’s council community and finance committee meeting heard the first report from the council staff member appointed to the theatre trust to provide oversight. Councillors accepted the report with some discussion. Councillor Geoff Evans says the kitchen sponsorship money should have gone towards paying off debt, but it was pointed out that it was tagged for the new kitchen. Mark and Andrea say they are huge supporters of the local performing arts scene and very excited to come on board as major sponsors of the new theatre. The donation, described as ‘considerable’ by trust chairman Kevin Moseley, will mean that the kitchen has capacity to cater for events of about 300.

Marshmallows delay Rain caused organisers to postpone last Friday’s International Toasted Marshmallow Day event, and it will now be on this Friday from 5pm until 7pm at the Blenheim Skating Rink in Stephenson Street. A gold coin donation is to be collected for the SPCA and children 13-18 years are welcome, younger children with parental supervision.

Handed over The deed handing over ownership of the assets of Marlborough Historical Society to the new Marlborough Heritage Trust umbrella group was signed yesterday. At a ceremony at the Marlborough Museum, the document was signed by Dale Webb and Rien Wagenvoort for the society and Graeme Gilmore and Peter Scott for the trust, witnessed by Patricia Clay and Pam Woodward.

Summer concert International reggae group UB40, featuring the original members Ali Campbell, Astro and Mickey Virtue, will play in Blenheim at the Villa Maria Estate in January as part of a national vineyard tour.

PAK’nSAVE Blenheim’s Andrea Boock and Mark Elkington are sponsoring the new theatre’s kitchen.

“It’s a very substantial donation which, coming on top of what’s been received from other supporters, means we can install a custom-built commercial kitchen; an essential part of the function and event component of the theatre’s business plan.” With kitchen plans now being finalised, work will begin on the PAK’nSAVE Kitchen as soon as building consents have been obtained in the hope the kitchen can be in action by this Christmas. This will leave only the small theatre yet to be funded and built. “It’s another huge step forward for the theatre and shows the depth of community goodwill that exists,” said Mr Moseley. Andrea says she and her husband

Mark believe the theatre is an amazing asset for Marlborough. “Mark and I have been thrilled to watch our four children perform in numerous productions and school events in the old theatre and we are looking forward to them performing even more in the new one. “Our respect for the people and volunteers who have put these productions together is immense, and the local talent we have seen on stage has blown us away. “If our sponsorship of the new theatre can help nurture more of that talent, then we’ll be very proud.” Mayor Alistair Sowman says it is heartening to hear of yet another big boost for the Theatre.

He says Mark and Andrea are a great example of successful Marlborough businesspeople who ‘gave back’ to the community and he thanks them for making that contribution. “I have advocated for this theatre because I can see what it will do for Marlborough, as a regional asset and as a cultural asset, not only for our immediate families but the generations to come, and I am pleased so many genuine and sincere people support that view. “I don’t think there’s a district that can match us for the level of financial backing coming from our arts supporters - from people like Mark and Andrea - and I am proud that such generosity is part of the Marlborough character.”

Cruise ships to go longer Sounds route By Cathie Bell Cruise ships are barred from using Tory Channel for the near future, instead using the longer Northern Entrance. The Transport Accident Investigation Commission has made two urgent findings as part of its investigation into an incident in January when the 180-metre cruise ship, Azamara Quest, touched Wheki Rock while turning into the channel on its first voyage to Picton. The commission also suggests a review into pilot accreditation,

suggesting that Picton-based pilots don’t have enough experience with larger ships. There are 41 cruise ship visits scheduled for this season, starting from October 6 until April next year. Marlborough harbour master Captain Alex van Wijngaarden says more criteria for cruise ships will be in place for the summer cruise season, but in the meantime, larger cruise ships may enter Queen Charlotte Sound only by way of the Northern Entrance, rather than the narrower Tory

Channel entrance used by regular passenger and freight ferries and subject to strong currents. The harbour master, who is employed by the Marlborough District Council, is responsible for harbour safety. A major review of Marlborough’s Risk Assessment for the Safe Navigation of Ships was already underway and until these control measures were all in place, cruise ship transits through Tory Channel would not resume, Alex says. “We support the commission’s

recommendations and agree that the precautions to be introduced are justified for larger cruise vessels. “Tory Channel, particularly near the heads, can be a very challenging stretch of water where conditions can change quickly.” Commission manager surface investigations Martin Harper says the harbour risk assessment relies heavily on the standard operating procedures followed by the Cook Strait ferry operators as a means of mitigating the risk of collisions and groundings for passenger fer-

ries, but there are extra risks with cruise ships. This includes harbour pilots not necessarily being familiar with the manoeuvring characteristics and navigation equipment of ships they are piloting, as well as the difficulties for pilots in staying current for pilotage areas. Martin says the commission is questioning the appropriateness of Port Marlborough allowing trips the pilot makes in the port company’s pilot launch in order to board or leave ships to be counted as qualifying transits.

Book stress relief for photographer By Joanne Holden Local photographer and poet Christopher Cookson is combining his two passions in a book about the Wither Hills, which he wrote to relieve the stress of helping his wife through her cancer. Christopher’s wife now has the all clear, and Wind on the Withers is being launched next week. He was convinced to create a book by friends at Nativity Church, who were providing his family with meals and babysitting during their difficult time. “It was with the encouragement I had that I put them together and actually did something with them,” Christopher says. Almost a quarter of the 200 copies he

ordered have been purchased thanks to social media, word-of-mouth, and a private book launch at Nativity Church. Chris says the book provides something ‘uniquely Blenheim’ for both residents of the town and people overseas who have difficulty visiting. The book fits snugly into an envelope so it can be shipped easily to anywhere in the world. “I’ve included a map in the front so people can actually go up there and find the places where I took the photos.” RIGHT: Christopher Cookson has published a collection of his poems and photography in a book titled ‘Wind on the Withers.

Marine farmers pass baton on By Cathie Bell Rob Pooley has stepped down as president of the Marine Farming Association after 16 years, being replaced by Marlborough farmer Jonathan Large. Jonathan, 38, is a second-generation mussel farmer. Rob told the association’s annual meeting in Blenheim on Friday he started as a marine farmer 40 years ago, encouraged by Government and local authorities to get the industry started in the Marlborough Sounds. He says the industry has come a long way and still has a huge potential. “It’s time for some next generation leadership to ensure marine farming can continue to deliver for the top of the South and for New Zealand.” Jonathan says Rob has given him his start in the industry and leaves big shoes to fill. Rob has also been recently recognised

by the New Zealand oyster industry and is a finalist in the inaugural Seafood Stars awards being run by Seafood NZ. Havelock’s Ivan Godsiff won two awards at the Marine Farming Association’s annual dinner on Friday night, recognising his long involvement and support of the industry, starting in the late 1960s. As well as winning the MFA Merit award, Ivan also won the Port Marlborough Environment award for his work over 16 years as the first Environmental Mentor for the association. Two other industry pioneers, Clearwater Mussel’s John Young & Lyn Godsiff of Kenepuru Sound, were recognised by the Donaghys Outstanding Marine Farmer Award. Joe Donaldson, 23, of Kono Seafood in Blenheim won the Aquaculture Direct Recent Entrant Award. The Research and Development Award,

Easter trading on cards The Government has passed a law to allow councils to approve shops opening at Easter and the Marlborough District Council is trying to get it in place for next year when the Omaka Classic Fighters event is on. More than 30,000 people attend the event, held every two years, but many retailers have been unable to take advantage of the visitors. Marlborough mayor Alistair Sowman says the law change recognises that regions

should be able to make the arrangements that meet their particular needs. The Marlborough District Council has long lobbied for the change as it is unfair to have just a couple of tourist towns advantaged by more relaxed rules, he says. “In Marlborough, Easter Weekend is one of our busiest times for visitors and it’s crazy that our retailers have been so restricted.” Marlborough promoted itself as a tourist destination and lifting the restriction would

enable businesses to capitalise on the thousands of people who visit the region at Easter, he says. Councillors will consider the draft policy at its meeting on September 22, and if approved, it will go out for a public consultation process in which anyone is able to make a submission. Depending on the public response, it could be possible to have a new policy in place by Easter 2017.

Missing cats a worry Dear Ed Over the past eight months I have been advertising, looking, and hoping that my lovely cat, SuzieQ will return. She went missing on the 4th of January this year and she is listed as missing on several websites, including social media selling pages, and all the vets in town have a poster in their reception areas. During the eight months that SuzieQ has been missing I have become very concerned about how many cats are going missing in the Redwoodtown, Witherlea areas of town, not just a few but a dozen! Is there someone in Blenheim that is trapping cats and disposing of them? I sincerely hope not, it is heart wrenching to read the posts on the social media sites about beloved pets that

have disappeared. Is there a rat bag out there? Most, if not all of the cats on the websites are deeply loved pets, whose owners are responsible enough to have their cats 1-neutered, 2- microchipped, 3- inoculated regularly, 4- wormed and 5- flea treated. SuzieQ is/was an excellent rat catcher! If anyone hears of this happening or knows of someone doing this, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with Animal Control or the Blenheim Police. I’m still hoping my cuddle bunch will make it home safe, but as the weeks/months pass, my resolve dips but I still live in hope that she will return. Any info on my lovely girl contact: 022 0117381. More from the Wairau Valley Dear Ed, Corrections are needed for the letter [10.8.16] defending vineyard conversion of many thousands of hectares of land in the Wairau Valley. The three houses in the valley that have been demolished, were not ‘old and cold’, but modern, solid material family homes, easily suitable for housing workers. It suggests sheep farming - ‘a few rumpty sheep’ is inferior to grape growing. Sheep farming has been the mainstay of the New Zealand economy for many decades, something the wine industry has never been. Traditional pastoral farming with its mix of cropping and stocking is the least environmentally damaging type, utilising only what the land can support, protecting it with trees and maintaining plant

diversity. Intensive farming is the most environmentally damaging, and includes dairying, forestry and viticulture. A ‘field of maize’ does not constitute a monoculture, one is formed when one type of intensive farming practice dominates a large area, as is happening here in Marlborough. It is nonsense to suggest the removal of trees is justified because they are “exotics” in order to make way for grapevines - these are also exotics. You may not want the wine industry to be labelled ‘moneygrubbing’, but little else is possible when we are witnessing the social and environmental irresponsibility that is currently being demonstrated in the Wairau Valley. Alison Parr Wairau Valley (abridged)

Leading the charge on Picton’s summer festivities Picton’s annual Maritime Festival is an eagerly anticipated event and Beryl Bowers is gearing up for her 12th year, she tells Glenise Dreaver. Beryl has seen the Maritime Festival event grow and prosper in the 12 years since she and her team first worked on what has proven to be a very good idea. That same year she picked up the organisation of the already-existing Picton Christmas Parade. Not everyone would have chosen to do that but they are, she says, both family festivals and very much about the children. It’s always been about the children. Unsurprisingly, her first career choice was as a Karitane nurse. Karitane was set up to help families and children at risk and she was very committed to that. But while Beryl paid for 18 months of training and then did the months needed to become registered, much was very hard for an eighteen-year-old to deal with, especially in sole charge positions. So Beryl moved into administration/ reception work. Then came the big OE on a cruise ship to Perth. “It was so rough they couldn’t fill the swimming pool.” The shared cabin, with three other girls, was a big plus though. “We had a lot of fun.” She worked at a Kalgoorlie pre-school. After a few months, she hitched back to work in Perth, then boarded a train across the Nullarbor to Sydney before heading home. She met Cliff, newly returned from three years of military service in Singapore. It wasn’t straightforward. Someone had wrongly told her he was married, so she turned down four dates. He was persistent though and the confusion finally got sorted, with marriage following just ten months after the first date. They have lived in Picton for their forty years of married life. Beryl worked in administration, in preschool work and as a teacher aide before training as a registered teacher by distance

education in the 1990s. She has also done the administration for Cliff’s plumbing business for many years. Beryl’s close 10-strong team of volunteers already has the 2017 festival planning under control, having started with the annual debriefing and planning. There is a smaller but just as close a team for the Christmas Parade. “It’s a cool little committee.” “We’ve got a great system. We go round the room handing a baton from one to the other. While someone holds the baton no one can interrupt. We are really honest and pull everything apart, but never nastily. We also talk about our favourite things and what went well.” The odd disaster has struck. The year the sewage overflowed after heavy rain and poured into the harbour on the day was memorable. “We had to shift the raft race to Shelly Beach at the last minute. “I felt like the Pied Piper as we led everyone there. We were lucky to be allowed as it had rained and rained and the foreshore was really muddy. “But it was all right in the end.” What she loves about the festival is that it fosters a sense of community. “Everyone is so positive. It always blows me away on the day.” Beryl’s main role is finding funds for the $60,000 needed. Marlborough District Council, Crafar Crouch, Kenny Barging, Creative New Zealand and firms with local connections like Interislander, New Zealand King Salmon and Bluebridge Cook Strait Ferry are all, she says, wonderful supporters. “Year after year.” Currently she is crossing her fingers about their application for COGS (Community Organisation Grants Scheme) funding for help with publishing a manual for the project planning. That will mean the event can continue when the current committee members have to call it a day.

By Saturday January 21 2017, the Picton foreshore will present a very different picture to that presented on this quiet spring day.

Jan and David Poswillo were among the group and also acted as exchange directors, and say it was an incredible experience. “We enjoyed both exchanges with such varied activities that showcased the respective regions. The hosts were very welcoming, friendly and helpful.”

Towards the end of the trip the group was hosted by the local council where they exchanged letters of greeting from Marlborough Mayor Alistair Sowman to the Mayor of Bundaberg Mark Dempsey, and were given a tour of the council chambers. They have returned with a letter which they will soon be presenting to Alistair. The Friendship Force is an international, non-political, non-sectarian, and non-profit organisation. The sole aim of the Friendship Force is to foster peace and understanding throughout the world by means of personal contacts and shared experiences achieved through a programme of home hosting.

Prepare for summer at Marlborough Watercraft.

Growth ‘remarkable’ in first year

NEW

By Celeste Alexander With their first birthday candle blown out and the business continuing to gain speed, Marlborough Watercraft is well positioned for another great year on Grove Road. At the helm, Pete Walters is thrilled with the immediate growth in sales, servicing and chandlery, citing his team as the greatest contributer to the success. By employing experienced staff who take the time to really listen to customers’ needs and a focus on leading brands, Marlborough Watercraft is successfully racing ahead. Pete recently joined the business to the Boating & Outdoors group which he says will not only strengthen his brand, but will deliver competitive prices to his customers. “Boating & Outdoors has huge buying power with over 23 independently owned stores nationwide. “My commitment is to my customers and part of that is to give them quality products and service they can rely on. Boating & Outdoors deal in quality recognised brands, not cheap knock off junk so this is a really positive move for us,” he says. Marlborough Watercraft now has an

impressive range of items from leading brand electronics like Lowrance, Furuno and Raymarine, through to an extensive range of boating chandlery. Boating & Outdoors has also become the sole agent for Nifty Boats. With summer approaching the jetski market is getting hotter and Pete says there’s no sign of it slowing down. In response he is enthusiastically marketing his jetski range being that Marlborough is the ideal playground for these “fun machines”. “People are recognising that jetskis are fun and easy to use, cheap to run and great to fish from. The Marlborough Sounds is right at our doorstep so there’s no better opportunity,” he says. Pete will be holding a ‘Jetski Open Day’ at Momorangi Bay in the Queen Charlotte Sound on Labour Weekend, October 23. There will be a fantastic static display, jetskis on the water to test or try for the first time and models available for purchase. To thank customers, Pete will be giving away goodie bags for the first six jetskis sold, valued at $600.

The Hamills experience Story and photo by Celeste Alexander Grove Road has welcomed a number of new businesses in the past few months, including Hamills which moved into the building previously occupied by Peter Grinter Motorcycles. Business partners Nick Horn and Guy Lester opened the store earlier this month with the vision of delivering great customer service. “Our point of difference is that we go out of our way to relate to people, chat with them regardless of making a sale. “We want to be a local store for local people and give great customer service,” he says. What attracted Guy and Nick to their Grove Road location was its direct connection to the Marlborough Sounds. “The location just struck me as being perfect. It’s a busy road with people travelling through from the Sounds. “I have friends coming up from Dunedin soon to fish the Sounds. Marlborough is very much a destination for many, hence why we felt it was the ideal location to open the store,” Nick adds. The handy parking off the main road and open store layout make accessing Hamills easy and convenient. Inside the stock line is growing every week as more suppliers get on board, and

includes everything from Ridgeline clothing, camping gear and hunting supplies, through to fishing supplies and even a selection of unique badges. “The store isn’t just about hard core hunting and fishing, we cater for people starting out and limited budgets. “The whole family can come in and find something and there are many great gift ideas, including Father’s Day vouchers which have no expiry date,” Nick says. Hamills also sells fishing licenses and will be set up with Farmlands in the near future. For advice and extensive knowledge on fishing, hunting and shooting call in and see the team.

Stop in for a unique gift By Celeste Alexander Grove Road truly is a destination for locals and visitors. Across from the train station is a unique gift store that promises something for everyone. Stunning handcrafted jewellery, beautifully made New Zealand products and a

selection of trendy homewares make the perfect gift. There’s even merino and possum products, skin care, bone carvings and greenstone carved by well known artists. Whatever your reason for needing a gift, or treat for yourself, Gifts on Grove Road is the ideal destination.

Story and photo by Cathie Bell Children at St Mary’s pre-school in Blenheim are getting hands-on retail experience, running their own shop each Wednesday. Principal Hazel Shapcott says the idea is to give them the experience of running a real shop, with real money.

The children are all involved with producing the goods for sale, pricing them, and selling them, which helps their mathematics skills, she says. The shop is open early in the day’s session for about half an hour, and later in the morning, they make soup from the produce to have at lunchtime.

Clydesdales set to be major attraction at ploughing event By Celeste Alexander Horses, ploughs, animal petting and more are in store for those who attend the 2016 Plough Qualifying Event set for this weekend. The event is being held by the Marlborough Ploughing Association over two days, Saturday and Sunday, at the Jordan Property on Old Renwick Road. It’s located between Jacksons Road and Kiwi Seed. Association president Allan Gifford says the public is encouraged to attend and there will be something for all ages including children, and plenty of ploughing action as members compete to represent Marlborough at the New Zealand 2017 finals. Hugely popular in previous years, the Erewhon Station heavy draught horses will be returning to compete in the horse ploughing event. At least four teams will compete including Erin Cassie who, despite being injured, will be taking the field. “The horses are always a major attraction and have been coming for quite a few years. “This is their favourite venue as there is always a great turn out and they love having

the crowd involved,” Allan says. Some local names to watch out for competing this year are the likes of Ash Murdoch, Ted Hutchison and Linda Cosgrove. Linda in particular is the only female competitor from Marlborough to qualify for a finals event (2014), and she will be out on her John Deere affectionately known as ‘Johnny Popper’. The event kicks off at 11am but for those wanting to be present for the ploughing action, the best time for this is between 12noon and 2pm. The event winds up at 3pm each day. “It’s an opportunity for town to come to the country, so bring the kids, take in a bit of fresh country air and enjoy a sausage,” Allan says. Carol the pig will be there as well as farm animals and lamb feeding for the children to enjoy and Marlborough Motorcycles will have a static display and demonstrations. With just a gold coin entry fee, the 2016 Plough Qualifying Event is an affordable day out. Parking will be available in a paddock by the event.

By Celeste Alexander Money raised from events held by the Marlborough Ploughing Association, such as the gate takings from this weekend’s championship event, goes towards supporting local ploughers who are heading to the national finals. This has been the case for Ian Woolley who has won the regional and national finals for three years running, an incredible feat that the Association is very proud of. As part of winning the national finals Ian then goes on to represent

New Zealand on the world stage. Last year he was in Denmark and placed 11th overall and currently he is in England preparing for this year’s World Ploughing Championships. He has been in contact with Association members, giving them regular updates on his progress. Ian has found a local farm near Naburn which is in close proximity to where the championships is being held at Crockey Hill early September. There he is practicing well with his tractor and plough, testing his gear

against the soil. He says he finds the soil “a bit hard” and is getting used to the gear again. Because Ian won this year’s New Zealand national finals event it qualifies him to compete at next year’s World Ploughing Championships which at this stage have been set for Kenya. It takes a huge amount of money to ship Ian’s tractor and plough from one World Ploughing Championship to another, so the support of the Marlborough community is very much appreciated.

Norman Simpson receives three cheers and a cake for his 90th birthday.

Deputy mayor Terry Sloan congratulates Zoe Gray on becoming a New Zealand citizen, with her husband Daniel Gray and children Theo and Jacob.

Daffodill Day a citizenship reminder Story and photo by Cathie Bell Daffodil Day co-ordinator Zoe Gray took an hour out of work on Friday to become a New Zealand citizen. Deputy mayor Terry Sloan, who presided over last week’s citizenship ceremony, says the ceremony coincided with Daffodil Day so each year, daffodils will remind new citizens of their new status. For Zoe, husband Daniel and sons Theo and Jacob, that will be particularly so. She had a busy day, and had to go back to work to finish wrapping up the Cancer Society’s major fundraising activities. Zoe has been in Marlborough since 2009, moving from Britain after her younger son Theo was born.

Her parents and sister were here which made the decision to move easier, but her husband had always been keen to emigrate to New Zealand, as he grew up on a farm in Britain, she says. “When we had the boys, I was ready to move too.” Blenheim was the only place they looked at living, she says. “I love it here. My parents and sister are here, we didn’t look at anywhere else.” Also getting her New Zealand citizenship on Friday was British immigrant Debbie Carter. She says that after 10 years here with husband Aaron and son Matthew, it was time to become a citizen. “I should become a Kiwi, I love it here, it’s my home.”

Three cheers for Norman’s 90th Story and photo by Celeste Alexander Norman Simpson has been given at least four surprise birthday celebrations in the past week, making his 90th an extra special year. Yesterday, while attending a Sit and Be Fit class, Norman received a birthday cake and morning tea courtesy of Te Piki Oranga Maori Health Services who run the class. Initially Norman took a Stable and Steady falls prevention course with the Marlborough Primary Health Organisation before going on to join the Sit and Be Fit classes. He’s been attending for two months, never

missing a class, in addition to taking Tai Chi classes on a Friday. The retired master plumber says exercise has never been a big part of his life, but it’s proving beneficial to him in his later years. “I find it very good. It frees my joints up a bit and it’s a lot of fun. “I was the only man when I joined but everyone is really nice and I’m doing exercise that I otherwise wouldn’t,” he says. Norman officially celebrated his birthday last Saturday (August 27) with a celebration at home.

Pelorus quilters spring fling There’s an old saying that a stitch in time saves nine. Well in that case, heaps have been saved in Havelock, where on Saturday and Sunday, between 10am and 3pm, more than a few go on show in the Town Hall. In a combined two-day show, the Havelock and Linkwater Quilting group, along with the students of Havelock School, have put together a community exhibition which highlights the delights, pleasure and passion of quilting. A member of the organising committee, Ruth Sussmilch, says they wanted to honour the memory of their founders, raise money for cancer research and share the pleasure they take in their craft. With the co-operation of Havelock junior and middle School, a group of quilters spent term two introducing the children to the

mysteries of machines, fabric, pattern and the importance of ironing. Teachers Vicki Eden and Tracey Wearing introduced mathematical shapes, patterns, rotations, reflections – and with the help of the quilting group, some colourful and exciting results were produced. Michelle Campbell headed the team of local women who worked closely with the school, and the children’s work was judged by Yvonne Roberts, a well-known quilter in her own right. Entry is by gold-coin donation and a number of beautifully worked daffodil-inspired samplers will be on sale, with all funds raised going to cancer research. “Come out and see for yourself, it isn’t far and you can’t miss us as we’re in the main street. After all, everyone deserves to have a bit of spring colour,” Ruth says.

Evo dominates hill climb There was a fair share of thrills, spills and some unexpected off roading at the weekend during the Marlborough Car Club’s Reserve Road gravel hill-climb in Seddon. While a few bumpers nosed

banks and ditches, there was plenty of fast paced action enjoyed by those competing in the hillclimb. Recording one of the best times was Daniel Harris in his Evo 3. Next on the club’s calendar is the

big annual event - the Riverlands Industrial Street Sprint on September 11. The timed two lap circuit through the Riverlands industrial estate will see a great range of cars competing.

There will be three timed runs and a four round shoot out to decide the overall winner. Food and drinks will be available on site and controlled spectator areas will be available to the public. Gold coin entry.

The fourth annual Picton Picnic football tournament will be held at Port Marlborough Endeavour Park Pavilion on the 10th and 11th of September, providing a fun, semi-competitive tournament which brings together ten men’s and six women’s teams from Marlborough, Wellington, Nelson and the West Coast. Committee member Regan Russell says it caps off the football season and provides much needed funding for the Picton Football Club. The tournament starts at 9am on Saturday, and finishes on Sunday with the women’s final at 10am and the men’s final at 11am.

Dragon boat event

Marlborough’s breast cancer survivor dragon boat team Simply the Breast are holding a fundraising dinner and auction at the Bamboo Garden on Monday September 12. Funds raised will help the team with travelling to regattas in the upcoming season. Tickets are $35 and are available from committee members Glenda Simpson and Susie Williams and social media.

Vexed track gets council funding By Cathie Bell Councillors have agreed to fund $290,000 a year towards an upgrade of the Queen Charlotte Track despite ongoing controversy about shared use of the track by cyclists and walkers. Yesterday’s council community and finance committee discussed the application for funding from the track management and agreed to fund it for three years, as long as that funding is matched by government funding. Councillors are to get reports every six months.

While there are still objections to the track’s upgrade and its continued use by cyclists, those objections could be dealt with through the resource consent process needed as part of the upgrade, councillors heard. Despite growth in cycle trails elsewhere, the user numbers on the Queen Charlotte Track are dropping, the report to councillors says. The Queen Charlotte Track’s economic impact has been estimated at $9.4m a year, it says. Queen Charlotte Track Incorporated believes this is because

the track needs upgrades and better visitor services. “Reversing this trend will reinvigorate one of Marlborough’s lead attractions and economic drivers, as well as providing a high level of environmental stewardship.” Without council funding, it will be hard to get government funding. The report says funding is needed to improve the trail, particularly Ship Cove which will be needed in the 2019 and 2020 Captain Cook 250 years event.

Marlborough Football season closes The curtain has come down on the Marlborough senior football season but not before the spotlight was put on Blenheim Valley United who were the team of the season, and Aaron Hayes the player of the season. The recent awards night capped off a wonderful year for United who took a swag of trophies home including Mens’ Division 1 winners, Knockout cup winners and the Sports Team of the Year awarded by local referees. Aaron Hayes had a magnificent year and bagged plenty of goals throughout the season, but it wasn’t only that ability that warranted winning multiple awards including Master of the Year, Players’ player of the year for the Mariners and Marlborough Football’s Player of the Year, it was the pride shown playing for the province and the role model characteristics displayed all season. In other awards, Matt Weaver took the golden boot for the second division and Alex

Connor-McClean for the first division. David Baker was referee of the year, while Liam Sluiter was the colt of the year. Troy Wilson took player of the year for the second division, Connor-McClean for the first division and Bjorn Waechter the Mariners player of the year.

“Expert opinion is that further investment in track upgrading is critical for the track’s future and environmental management. The track is a lifeline economically and has infrastructure in place to build upon.” The report says track upgrade design could make some ‘high risk’ parts of the track better, as well as signage slowing cyclists, reducing the risk to walkers and residents. “The reduction in grade of the track will also attract the non lycra brigade to utilise the track.”
