Combined colleges’ formal a huge event for youth Continued from page 1 Head girl Ashana Rengasamy says this year, the ‘formal’ is back in the formal and there will be a band and a sit-down dinner, all dressed to a ‘Great Gatsby’ theme. “The theme achieves what we want for the night.” The senior formal is ‘definitely a highlight’ for students at Marlborough Boys’ and Marlborough Girls’ Colleges, she says. The community also enjoy it, with many people turning up outside the convention centre early in the evening to watch the students arriving in the many and varied vehicles they turn up in, and how dressed up the young people get. The students are arriving from 7pm until about 8pm. Ashana says she is ‘extremely happy’ with how well the formal preparation is going.

Because there were no events on at the convention centre, the formal committee were able to start decorating the room on Wednesday afternoon, which meant it would not be the usual Friday afternoon panic.
She says the committee has put in an enormous effort into its planning. “We started in April, five months ago. “You forget how much planning goes into these events!” Everyone on the planning
committee has pulled their weight, Ashana says. The group met each week, and people put in hours and hours of work to get a huge amount done, she says. “I’m extremely happy with the outcome, very happy.”

By Celeste Alexander Renwick man Luke Marchant is “gutted” by the recent theft of his bagpipes from his home on August 11. Thieves broke into his car during the night which was parked in the driveway of his Uxbridge Street home, taking his wallet and bagpipes. He says he’s not concerned about his wallet but his bagpipes hold “sentimental value” and he wants them returned. “I have had them since I started playing eight years ago. I don’t understand why they
wanted to take the bagpipes when there was other stuff in the car, but I really want them back. “If they can be returned to where they were taken from, there will be no questions asked, no further action,” he says. Luke has reported the theft to Police but there have been no leads. “If you happen to find them, please hand them into the Police.” Luke is a member of the Marlborough District Highland Pipe Band which is where he learned to play the bagpipes.

Boyes family to celebrate 150 years at Tua Marina On Labour Weekend this year descendants of the Boyes family will meet to celebrate 150 years at Windermere Farm, Tua Marina. The farm at Tua Marina is now owned by a great-great grandson of David and Margaret Boyes, Rodney Parkes and wife Ann. The reunion events will take place in Tua Marina, Blenheim, Picton and Nelson. David Boyes, born in 1834, was a skilled carpenter from Applegarth, Dumfriesshire, near Lockerbie in Scotland. He arrived into Nelson via Melbourne, Australia on board the Lalla Rookh in January 1861 and then travelled onto Picton. David purchased three properties in Picton and took up work building the railway line between Picton and Blenheim. David’s wife to be Margaret Stewart, born in 1842, was residing in Glasgow, Scotland. Being prone to bronchitis her family advocated a move to a warmer climate, and combined with a very lucky escape from the ‘Body Snatchers’, Margaret moved to New Zealand. The ‘Body Snatchers’ were in the business of grabbing people, smothering their face with a chloroform-laced cloth until they passed out and died, then selling the bodies for profit to medical schools so they could learn about human anatomy. Glasgow had a large trade in this, of which Margaret Stewart was a target. However she luckily fought back with sufficient vigour and determination to escape. The family believe Margaret arrived from Glasgow into Port

Chalmers, Dunedin on board the Ben Lomond in January 1863. Just over a year later Margaret and David were married at the Picton Registry on 9 March 1864. David subsequently sold the three sections in Picton and purchased land at Tua Marina from an Edmond Buxton for a price of £1500. The land at Tua Marina, comprising 150 acres of swampy flats, was the foundation that would eventually be expanded to some 1500 acres and became known as “Windermere” farm. On their arrival at the property Margaret and David lived in a canvas tent until David built their first home there. Flax was initially milled and harvested on the farm, followed by a sawmill and then eventually dairy farming.

David tendered for and built the Tua Marina Methodist Church, which is currently under restoration after being relocated to Brawshaw Park, Blenheim. David and Margaret had six children; an adopted son John, David Jnr, William Francis, Arthur Robert, Agnes Isabella (married Thomas Hall) and Margaret
(married William Healy) which resulted in 29 grandchildren. These days the Windermere property has successfully evolved into growing and supplying grapes for wine production, along with forestry production. To register for the Boyes & Parkes Family Reunion contact Anna Reed on 03 579 1954.
Primary Industries Minister Nathan Guy has announced changes to management controls for 25 fish stocks as part of the regular twice yearly fisheries sustainability review, including snapper, paua and eels. The catch limit for Snapper 7, covering the top and west coast of the South Island, is to increase, with recreational from 90 to 250 tonnes, and commercial from 200 to 250 tonnes. In the Paua 7 fishery (top of the South Island) there will be a decrease for the commercial sector from 220.24 tonnes to 133.62 tonnes. This is supported by industry and follows their voluntarily shelving of up to 28 per cent of the quota. The South Island long-finned eel commercial harvest is being significantly reduced to encourage an increase in the population.

WK top Xero firm in top of the South By Cathie Bell Xero has announced Blenheim firm WK as the Tasman winner for Accounting Partner of the Year. Regional winners were announced during the Xero New Zealand Winter Roadshow, where more than 2,000 New Zealanders attended the events across 17 locations nationwide including Tasman. Scenic Hotel Marlborough’s new staff By Cathie Bell Scenic Hotel Marlborough has a new general manager, starting in just over three weeks’ time. The chain announced previous general manager Adrian Clifton has moved to the Scenic Hotel Dunedin City and Carmel Horsley takes up the position of General Manager, Scenic Hotel Marlborough effective from the beginning of October 2016. For the past two years, Carmel has been Assistant General Manager at Scenic Hotel Tonga, where she describes her time in the Kingdom of Tonga as being one of ‘unique experiences that have been both memorable and enjoyable’.

Karamu – coprosma robusta – a tough native plant with glossy green leaves and an orange berry will be a design feature in the façade of the new Picton Library and Service Centre. The karamu leaf has been chosen to incorporate into the design at the front entrance to the new building. Picton was originally named Waitohi or Waitohi Pa, by Te Atiawa who occupied the site. According to our local history website The Prow, the name Waitohi means wai, or water, and tohi refers to the tohi ritual, in which tohunga dipped karamu branches in the sacred stream and brushed the right shoulder of warriors.

Does Maxwell Road need pedestrian refuges? Increasing traffic along Maxwell Road has prompted Marlborough Roads to look at installing pedestrian refuges at a couple of spots where people are finding it difficult to cross that road safely. Marlborough Roads Manager Frank Porter says there’s quite a long stretch of Maxwell Road where there are no official pedestrian crossings so it’s proposed to put the refuges at the Showgrounds dairy and also closer
to town, between Muller Road and Howick Road. Both spots are on the routes for families heading to and from Whitney Street School. Mr Porter said feedback from the school community prompted the proposal. It’s hoped that one pedestrian refuge can be built this year and the other can be funded next year. Marlborough Roads is now asking for public feedback on this proposal.

Marlborough Small Townships Programme Council has funding in the 2015 – 2025 Long Term Plan to upgrade some of the amenities in our small townships. Eligible projects include community spaces, recreation areas and landscaping and streetscape upgrades. Council is working to help ensure Marlborough’s townships have attractive central spaces, freedom of movement, connectivity and accessibility and a strong sense of place and unique identity. Council wants the residents to be able to use, enjoy and take pride in their outdoor public spaces. The Small Townships Programme has two different parts: The small township plan: Using the Smart and Connected framework, Council will see good outdoor public space design deliver on community aspirations. The work being done through this small township plan is beginning in Renwick, Havelock, Wairau Valley, Spring Creek and Ward. More communities will be brought into the programme in the

To try walking Some people are disabled and cannot walk to the parking buildings! Aren’t you lucky you can. Try thinking outside your tiny square. To the person telling others to walk from car parks. One day they might find they struggle to walk any distance, don’t only think of yourself. I will have you know that removing more car parks from Scott Street does affect the older generation. I am a 67 year old war vet, that had my leg blown off in Vietnam. Walking across town isn’t as easy as it seems to you. I would try walking further if I had two legs. I often park there to go to the salvo army shop and donate. But removing more parks has made this more difficult.

Such a shame After putting in considerable time and effort convincing friends and employers to donate their unused books to the book fair, collecting and delivering several car boot loads, I was dismayed when going to purchase some myself and not finding much to my taste to be informed that the dealers from Picton and Blenheim get first dibs on the whole lot, taking boxes and boxes of them! Hardly fair on poor old Joe public! Shame on you. You just lost my support.
Interrupted call Thank you so much to the person who rang and then hung up in my ear after I answered the phone, without even the decency to even say that you had called the wrong number. People don’t usually mind if you ring their number by accident. However they do mind when rather than answer their calls of “hello?”, you just ignore them and hang up on them. Metris has been using the WRF Mesoscale model (high resolution) for several years now. This year we have beefed up our computing power and will run the model for frost forecasting down to a 1.7km grid spacing. Coupling that with our own in-house algorithms to fine tune data further. While the likes of Canterbury University, Niwa and the Metservice all run mesoscale models we are the only specialist frost forecasting company to run Mesoscale models and run it down to that sort of resolution. The model calculates things like planetary boundary layer and this helps us to know the onset of inversion. Frost forecasting relies heavily on forecast computer models to produce accurate frost forecasts. The global forecast models that are still used by some frost forecasters have a resolution of 27km grid spacing (that’s the distance between data points). In an area like Cloudy Bay and the Awatere valley that is a problem as the data from surrounding hills finds its way into the data.

Going to a nearby forest to gather firewood with my brother, my dad and our dog. What is the one thing Sun readers would be surprised to know about you? That I served in Vietnam as a conscientious objector for the US Army.
This makes it hard to know actually just what you’re looking at. We have 25 years of frost forecasting experience, and that will always be important. But the mesoscale forecast data makes those calls easier to make and increases frost forecast accuracy. The mesoscale model is key to other areas of our specialist horticultural weather forecasts. We forecast using the mesoscale and other models for the whole season. For instance, over vintage our growers will have 4.7km resolution 24 hour accumulated rainfall maps covering an un-precedented 10 day forecast. Wind is key for Marlborough and finding spray conditions that work. Modern sprayers can spray in a wider range of winds, but the proximity of Cook Strait really makes for short spray windows. We have a large number of virtual weather stations with wind speed and direction. Those stations are accessible to our clients this year on their mobiles, PC or tablets. PBA

Guava Moth a big pest The Guava Moth first appeared in Northland in 1997 and since then commercial growers and home gardeners in the North Island and possibly some areas of the South Island, could have small, but growing populations of the pest. Because the guava moth has numerous host plants, including citrus, loquat, plums, peaches, pears, apples, macadamia, feijoa and guava, they are likely to find a host fruit at any time of the year. In home orchards that have a range of fruit trees, it is obvious that there will be one or more host trees in fruit for most if not all the year. My Internet research indicates that the grubs pupate in the top layer of soil and debris under the trees they have been feeding. Placing a few free ranging chickens into the area of your fruit trees would clean up all the pupating moths no problem. I also know that some garden centres have recommended placing Neem Tree granules under the trees to confuse the moths when they emerge from their cocoons. I have had some good reports from gardeners doing this under their apple trees to assist in the control of Codling Moths; so on the same theory it could work on guava moths. Being a caterpillar at this stage they are affected by Wallys Super Neem Tree Oil mixed with Raingard and as previously mentioned in the article on Codling Moth all you need to do is ensure there is a coating of the oil spray on the fruit. This means when the grub takes its first bite it will stop eating and die within hours, effectively stopping the further increase in the populations.
A repeat spray of the fruit (no need to spray the tree) every 14 days till harvest will be needed the first season to begin eliminating the moths from your gardens. Other alternatives are wrapping a branch in Crop Cover after flowering is finished. This would stop the moths from laying eggs on the fruit on that branch. Setting up inexpensive solar lights to attract the moths at night and placing plastic wrap over the light part that you have applied a cooking oil to or a light coat of petroleum jelly or similar. The moths are attracted to the light and get stuck so next day you can destroy them and reload the trap. Wallys Yellow Sticky White fly traps could also be used hanging with the solar light on a pole at about the height of the lowest fruiting branch of the tree. A combination of all these methods should help ensure that you have your fruit again and outside of re-infestation from neighboring properties your trees would stay clean of problems. Remember also that lights on your property at night (including street lights) will attract moths and other nocturnal pests to cause problems. If you do not have a guava moth problem yet, enjoy your fruit without these hassles while you can.

Employment standards seminar Work contracts, minimum wage, holiday pay, leave - these are all aspects of joining the New Zealand workforce which can be very confusing. For migrants new to New Zealand they can be a nightmare, so as part of their Migrant Connect Programme, the Marlborough Citizens Advice Bureau is holding a Free Information Session on Employment Rights in New Zealand. This will cover all of the above as well as addressing any queries attendees may have while ensuring that migrants are aware of their employment rights. Netball NZ makes a rod for its own back
Netball New Zealand appears to be having an identity crisis. The national netball governing body looks set to ban players from playing for the Silver Ferns if they play in the new Australian netball league over the New Zealand one. The key player in the midst of this is centre and former New Zealand captain Laura Langman. The former Silver Ferns captain looks set to re-sign with the New South Wales Swifts in the new Australian competition instead of playing in the Kiwi event. So, Netball New Zealand look set to ban her from international play. This is a clear example of Netball New Zealand channelling
their inner-All Blacks. The New Zealand Rugby Union has the same stance that only players playing in New Zealand are eligible for the All Blacks. The difference between rugby and netball in this country is depth. New Zealand can’t afford to lose a player like Langman, the country doesn’t have the depth of player to replace her skill and experience. It’s admirable Netball New Zealand want to try to protect their own competition but let’s face it, the Australians are better than we are at netball currently and have always had better depth than we have.

The trans-Tasman netball competition proved that point with Australian franchises winning all but one of the titles. New Zealand teams were only competitive with each other so the competition was scrapped. So, with that in mind, I can’t blame Langman for wanting to stay in Sydney. The skill level will be higher, and it will pose more of a challenge. Netball New Zealand needs to get off their high horse and realise that Laura Langman is worth more to the Ferns than the Ferns are to Langman at this point in her career.

Eight members of Kartsport Marlborough travelled to Hastings last weekend to contest the 48th edition of the Blossom Kart meet run over two days at Kartsport Hawkes Bay with five races on Saturday and four on Sunday, six of the karters came away with top 10 finishes. In the seniors Neil Butts took out the Rotax Heavy class winning 6 of the 9 races , with Peter Richardson finishing 2nd. The open class saw Matt Butchart placing 3rd and Daniel Buglar 7th William Exton was the best of the Juniors finishing 8th, with Bo Hill 10th, Jacob Douglas 12th, and Ollie Workman 13th in their respective classes. Next up for the members they will be heading to Nelson for the Jason Richards Memorial Grand Prix, also raced over two days on September 17 and 18.

Tussock Run raises $20,000 By Celeste Alexander Seddon School has carried out its final count from its recent Tussock Run event and organisers are thrilled to say they have raised over $20,000. This year’s event also had a record number of entries with 513 people taking part on the day. Marlborough Girls’ College’s netball team is ranked second from the South Island in the 15 finalists competing at next month’s NZ Secondary Schools Netball Champs, at the Walter Nash Stadium in the Hutt Valley from October 4-7. Getting outside and getting active By Cathie Bell Kids can earn Kiwi Guardians medals getting out and about on Sunday, with the Kiwi Conservation Club setting up a trapping line at the Grovetown Lagoon as part of Conservation Week activities. The Grovetown Lagoon working group have teamed up this Sunday to offer a Kiwi Guardians Explorer Medal, sponsored by Toyota and the Department of Conservation. The day’s events start at 9.30am with weeding
and mulching. All participants will receive a certificate and progress towards a special Conservation Week Kiwi Guardian Medal. At around 11.30 KCC will be setting up a rat trapping line beside the domain at the Lagoon. Families and schools can sponsor a rat trap, put your name on it and receive feedback on who’s trap has caught what. Organiser Kathryn Richards says KCC is looking for people who would like to help
monitor the trapping line, clearing, setting and recording data. “It’s suitable for all ages as the traps we are using are suitable for children under the guidance of an adult.
