By Cathie Bell Marlborough Girls’ College student Yasmin Burdis did so well raising funds for leukemia and blood cancer research, teacher Chris Charteris was inspired to join her. Close shave for charity by student and teacher Continued from page 1 Yasmin had her long hair cut off in front of a crowd of fellow students, with younger sister Danika cutting off the plaits before the shaver came out. Chris also had his hair cut off, with students donating to Leukemia and Blood Cancer New Zealand to get the opportunity to wield the shaver. “We had a few people lining up to take a hack at my hair. One managed to draw blood.” Yasmin says she was sitting in English class and decided I wanted to do it. “I’d thought about it in the past, something I wanted to do. Not sure what provoked me but I’m glad. No, I haven’t known anyone personally with it. I haven’t experienced second effects, I can’t really explain why I decided to cut all my hair off, but you can see in movies and stuff, you see lots of stories about it. Yasmin’s hair was very long, reaching her hips, she says. “I’ve had a phobia about going to

the hairdresser for a few years after my mum took me once and the hairdresser got a bit scissor-happy and cut off more than I wanted. I wasn’t too happy. I’ve been scared since then to go to the hairdresser.” It’s taking a bit of getting used to, having the short hair, she says. “You can feel the elements a lot more, this hasn’t been exposed for a long time. “My friends have all said I look really good, they say I have a nice shaped head, which is good. “I might stand out for a wee while but I don’t mind that so much. “I’m hoping it will grow back, I seem to have quite fast-growing hair.” She says her mother is keeping the two plaits that she cut off. The exercise was ‘really great’, Yasmin says, and she is ‘really thankful’ for all the donations. She raised $1155 as of yesterday afternoon, and Chris raised $732. He says he became aware of what Yasmin was doing and asked if he could support her. “I was pretty inspired by Yas-

min’s choice. “It’s a really worthy cause, I’ve seen people go through different types of cancer, and I wanted to do something good.” It is a ‘really humbling’ experience, Chris says. “From the school’s perspective, we’re very proud of what Yasmin’s

chosen to do. She’s got really good intentions, very brave, especially being a teenager when what you look like can be quite important. “In terms of modelling the values of what it means to be a Marlborough Girls’ College student, what Yasmin’s done here really hits the nail on the head.”

TWICE WEEKLY

Formal tops By Cathie Bell The Marlborough Boys’ and Marlborough Girls’ Colleges’ combined formal was everything students hoped it would be, organisers says. Marlborough Girls’ College head girl Ashana Rengasamy says Friday’s night’s event went ‘really well’. The formal, with a ‘Great Gatsby’ theme, had a band and a sit-down

dinner. A record number of students attended the event, and there were crowds of people gathered outside as partygoers arrived at the Marlborough Convention Centre. Crowned King and Queen of the formal at the end of the evening were: Taine Turnbull and Kaylan Kenny. Also crowned Prince and Princess were Jack Pope and Fenella Smith.

Bella Samu and Georgia Day thank William Day for all his hard work at the formal.

From the shed to the skies By Cathie Bell He won’t be bringing one of the jet packs with him, but Martin Aircraft founder Glenn Martin is visiting Marlborough tomorrow to talk about his business story. Glenn took his jetpack idea from his shed to the skies, and organisers of tomorrow’s Biz event in Blenheim suspect there will be businesses in Marlborough sheds that could soar similarly high. Hosted by directory company Yellow, The Biz event series hits ASB Theatre Marlborough tomorrow from 4pm until 7pm with Glenn as its headline speaker. As a young man, Glenn was frustrated that no one had built a jetpack, and when he asked why, he found the technology totally unsatisfying - a short flight time of 26 seconds, and a maximum pilot weight of 65 kg. As a 100+ kilogram Kiwi who wanted to fly much longer, he decided to build one that could fly hundred times longer, 100 times higher and lift twice the weight. “The key for anyone who has a big idea is to just get started. You will make a lot of mistakes, but so long as you learn from them that is OK. “I was also lucky I have an incredibly supportive wife who never once doubted me, even when I doubted myself,” Glenn says. Joining Glenn in The Biz speaker lineup is Tenby Powell, Founder and Executive Director of Hunter Powell Investments and entrepreneur and financial journalist Bernard Hickey. Tenby has led high growth for businesses since 1997, using his experience working with businesses to help extensive company and cultural development, along with skills in marketing, communications and brand.

24

.99

Tenby also masterminded the NZ SME Business Network to give almost 9,000 business owners a voice, and chairs the Government appointed Small Business Development Group which provides policy advice to enhance our SME ecosystem. Tenby says he thrives on seeing Kiwi businesses innovate their way to success and will be sharing his knowledge with The Biz attendees. Sometimes controversial, but always engaging, Bernard is well known to most New Zealanders as a leading financial journalist and editor with over 23 years’ experience. Bernard will be speaking at The Biz about the business benefits of harnessing the power of technology and social media including blogging and Twitter. Yellow CEO Michael Boersen

The Marlborough Historical Society will host what organisers are calling one of this region’s most significant presentations on the nightmare that was the Battle of the Somme, at 2pm on Sunday September 25 at the Marlborough Convention Centre. Senior Heritage Advisor to the New Zealand Defence Force Matthew Buck will speak on ‘The Meaning Of War In The Industrial Age’. The 15,000-strong New Zealand Division joined the battle in mid-September 1916. By November, when the offensive ended, 2000 Kiwi servicemen were dead and 6000 injured. In total, it is estimated that up to 1.2 million were killed or wounded in that campaign.

says The Biz is a powerful learning and networking event for local businesses. “The connections we make in business are vital, so it’s important for Yellow to help build those connections, especially in a country of small businesses. “I encourage businesses in the region to attend The Biz because

attendees always come away with amazing tips, advice and new local support networks,” Michael says. The Biz is Yellow’s flagship annual event series designed to support small to medium business owners with expert marketing advice, practical tips, inspiration and networking opportunities.

Native plants unique to Marlborough miss the public calls for protection that are rallied for native birds like tui or falcon, yet there are amazing plant species, says Nelson botanist Shannel Courtney, citing Marlborough rock daisy, Marlborough pink broom, weeping broom and the native lilac as some of the best. The Department of Conservation technical advisor for threatened plants in the top of the south will profile many more tomorrow evening when he speaks to Marlborough Forest and Bird in the Blenheim School hall from 7.30pm.

Boswell says Blenheim has a lot of pie fans, and put in the most entries into the competition. “People know what makes a good pie here.” Brydan agrees, saying it was a good pie. It’s the first time he’s won anything like this, he says. “I can hardly win a meat raffle.” Sharon says she is pleased the prize went to a local.

Go purple By Celeste Alexander It’s that time of year again where purple t-shirts are worn and people come together to walk for dementia. The annual ‘Memory Walk’ is being held by Alzheimers Marlborough on Saturday, September 17. It begins at the Monro Street carpark at 10am. The walk winds along the Taylor River, heads into Seymour Square and finishes at The Forum Market Place. Upon finishing participants will be greeted with a cup of hot milo. For those unable to complete the full walk organisers say they can still meet the group at Seymour Square and join in for the final leg. Registrations can be taken on the day or at the Azheimers Marlborough centre on Wither Road. The first 50 registrations receive a free Memory Walk purple t-shirt.

Business trust opens own office By Cathie Bell Business Trust Marlborough is experiencing its own business boost, with Blenheim business McKendry’s in High Street now hosting the business advisory service. Until now, trust manager Sue Avery has met clients in a borrowed space at the Marlborough

District Council, but now she has a dedicated office at McKendry’s. Andrew McKendry says the business tries to give back to the local community and this is one such way. “We had a spare office.” Sue says the move has helped her deliver a better service to clients. The business advisory service

helps start-ups and small businesses with free advice and mentoring services. It recently received a 100 per cent satisfaction rating from clients in a national business mentoring survey. One client has started up a hot sauce business, based on a Somalian recipe, and it is being stocked by national supermarkets. Anneka looks to inspire Story and photo by Celeste Alexander A well liked Blenheim singer songwriter is hoping to inspire young musicians to explore writing their own music at an up and coming concert this month. Tempo has invited Anneka Waters (nee Thwaites) to guest star at its ‘Originals’ concert set for this Friday, September 16. Being a songwriter and having released two albums, the last being in 2014, she says she wants to encourage kids to “have a go at writing their own songs”. “I began playing piano then went on to guitar and around the age of 14 I started writing my own

songs. “What I would tell youth wanting to explore song writing is that there’s no right or wrong way, the more you do the better you

will get. Give it a try, you might be surprised with yourself,” she says. Interestingly Anneka once attended the Junior Music Circle which later

evolved into Tempo. “I wish I did more. The kids today are so confident and have great stage experience. It would have made it easier as an adult,” she laughs. Anneka has had a busy year performing at weddings and corporate events in addition to her day job as a fulltime cabinet maker. Attending events such as the Tempo concert she says is “always fun”. Friday night’s Tempo concert is themed ‘Originals’ so Anneka will be playing a set of three original songs she has written. The concert will be held at the Wesley Centre from 7pm. Entry is $10 per family, or $3 per person.

SLOOOW Computer!!!

Are you for ever waiting for things to happen? Yes, computers do slow down over time, this is quite natural and the good news is that it can be remedied. Just like a car computers need a certain amount of maintenance which if not done will lead to “slooow computer” syndrome. If you have recently had ultrafast broadband installed and things aren’t happening as fast as you think they should let us give your computer a good service and clean out, even if you are still on ordinary broadband your computer will thank you for it.

Dear Ed, A HUGE thank you to the children of Marlborough primary schools, for the ceramic daffodils that were so carefully and thoughtfully made for Cancer Awareness Week. One of the daffodils travelled to Rangiora, via my daughter, Brenda Alexander, and now takes pride of place in our dining room. As I continue my journey with chemotherapy, I look at the daffodil as a sign of “Hope” and take one day at a time. I do not know who made my daffodil, but hope through your newspaper to offer my thanks to all the children. It is good to hear and see the positive and encouraging actions that the children of Marlborough are accomplishing. Keep up the good work. Rita Moore Rangiora

Impacting on lives Last week was a particularly important one for people like Angelea Stanton who dedicate their careers to working as a diversional therapist. Angelea talks to Celeste Alexander about what a diversional therapist is and the role it plays in our community. Angelea is the lead diversional therapist at Ashwood Retirement Village, a career path she says she found herself in ‘accidentally’. While her husband Jeff was away for work, Angelea says she found herself looking for a new challenge to keep herself busy so she applied for a position as an activities assistant at Redwood Retirement Village. “It fitted in with school hours and worked out well while Jeffery was away,” she says. The opportunity arose to take on the role as activities co-ordinator which she enjoyed for two years, before joining the team at Ashwood Retirement Village. On top of her workload Angelea embarked on studying towards her diversional therapy qualifications which she says is normally spread out over 18 months, but she completed in six months. “I worked really hard to finish, plus I had the benefit of already having worked in the industry,” she says. Asked what made her decide to pursue a career in diversional therapy she says, “I found a passion for the people I worked with and wanted to study to better understand how to support them”. “It’s a job you can do if you like people. What I love about it most is that older people have amazing life stories and sometimes even their families don’t know all the details, so it’s a real privilege to be part of that,” she says. According to Angelea there are still a lot of people who don’t know what a diversional therapist is.

Lead diversional therapist at Ashwood Park Retirement Village, Angelea Stanton sheds some light on what her role entails.

“I quite often have people ask ‘what is a diversional therapist’. Many people hadn’t heard about diversional therapy until they moved into a resthome,” she says. Diversional therapists work with people of all ages and abilities to plan and facilitate leisure programmes that enhance the emotional, social and physical wellbeing of the individuals. “The majority of diversional therapists work in age care, though

they are spreading out into the community. Here at Ashwood, the activities we plan are designed to give residents purpose to make them feel important, loved and useful. “We want them to be able to do the things they used to do and build on those skills. Some of our residents want to be able to garden so we have raised garden beds where they can grow food which then is taken to the kitchen and used in meals. “Another time we went out to an

apple orchard to pick apples which we brought back, peeled and were made into a dessert. “I like to think we impact on people’s lives. People deserve to feel fulfilled and happy and it’s such a privilege to be able to do that,” she says. Angelea has also taken on a new role as the secretary of the New Zealand Diversional Therapy Society, a non-profit society that supports diversional therapists

across the country. It provides regional support groups, yearly conferences, quarterly magazines and is the recognised body that registers diversional therapists once they complete their qualification. “The NZSDT Executive Committee currently has eight executive board members and around 520 members so it’s great that we have a local face representing,” Angelea says.

Bra business in demand The Beauty Bra is in such demand, Esther Rook Underfashions is looking for Marlborough women to take over local work. Christchurch woman, Esther Rokk says finding a comfortable and supportive bra was next to impossible, until she was fitted with the Beauty Bra (formerly known as the Jeunique Bra). So she set about training to fit the Beauty Bra. That was over 6 years ago and she has loved practically every minute of it. “They are so good I wanted to share them with others,” she says. The Beauty Bra does not have stretch straps, under wires or shoulder strap pull; just amazing comfort and support, Esther says. The breast needs to be supported from beneath – not suspended from the shoulders. Most of the weight is taken on the Beauty Bra’s inbuilt shelf, which lifts and supports the delicate breast tissue into the cup area, so there is very little weight on the shoulders at all. The bra also ensures your clothing fits properly by enhancing your figure. “The Beauty Bra really does slim the fuller figure and enhances the dainty figure too.” With over 200 sizes available it is simple to find the exact fit for every figure type. “This bra is now very much in demand in Canterbury, Otago and Nelson and I want to bring it to the women of Blenheim but I cannot be in several places at once! I need ladies who are situated in Blenheim and outlying areas. “This is a business women can run from their own home or add to an existing busi-

ness. It’s ideal for stay at home mothers or retired women. “If you have always wanted to have an income and business of your own, now is the time to get started. Shopping wins Alison a new car Story and photo by Cathie Bell Doing her grocery shopping at Blenheim New World has paid off for Alison Fuller, who has won a car in the supermarket’s competition. She received the keys to the car and a bunch of flowers from the store’s owner Ashley Shore and Wadsco Motorworld owner Jared Morris on Friday. Alison says the win is ‘a great thrill’.

“Something like this is very exciting.” She recommends the supermarket, saying she has shopped there since it opened. “I’ve lived here in Blenheim all my life, I’ve never won anything like this before. “I’ve always said my husband was the lucky one. His brothers used to say if he fell down the sewer, he’d come up with his trousers pressed. My kids always used to make him buy the Lotto tickets.”

Novus Blenheim owner Josh Cody and auto glazier Adam Beaumont taking the broken windscreen out of a truck.

Novus Auto Glass It has been four years since Josh and Michelle Cody took over the Blenheim franchise for Novus and a lot has happened in that time. Their client base has grown over that time, staff numbers have increased and the couple has also welcomed two more businesses that all complement one another. “Growth has been good and our Novus business has been steadily growing, business is certainly on the up. “Novus is one of the auto glass specialists preferred by insurance providers and I think that the fact we are 100 per cent locally owned and operated makes us the number one choice for our customers,” Josh says. Josh has employed auto glazier Adam Beaumont to work alongside him, who also has experience working with classic cars. “Adam is a trade qualified glazier, and has icar training which means we are up to date with the latest technological changes in the auto glass industry. Adam is also qualified to work with flat glass, so he has a good range of skills to work on all makes and models of vehicles. “Any one day we could have a truck, boat or campervan come in for auto glass repair or replacement. It’s not only cars that we work on,” Josh says. In the office Novus has a dedicated administrator who is the ‘first point of contact’ and

very helpful when it comes to dealing with insurance companies. “Bev helps to make the process of insurance claims easy. If you haven’t already been sent to us by your insurance company, you can come in and Bev will help you with your claim while we carry out the repairs... it’s that easy. “We provide chip repair, stop cracks and auto glass replacement while you wait both here at out Main Street premises, or we come to you. “We love a challenge so will work on all shapes and models, custom work is certainly accepted. If we don’t have a particular glass in stock, we will get it overnight,” Josh says. Novus repairs are a highly effective alternative to replacing damaged windscreens, they are also far less costly and better for the environment as most windscreens today are not recycled but end up in landfills. Repairs are accomplished by injecting a specially formulated resin into the damaged area. The resin is then cured and polished to restore structural strength and clarity to the glass. All Novus repairs are carried out to WOF/ COF Standards and come with a Certificate of Compliance as well as the trusted nationwide Novus guarantee. Call the Novus Blenheim team or visit their premises at 44 Main Street.

Story and photo by Celeste Alexander Forty women will be competing against one another to prove who is the ultimate near perfect woman as part of a fundraising event that will be launched in November. Redwood Tavern bar manager Chrissy van der Laan came up with the idea of hosting an ‘Almost Perfect Gal’ competition to raise money for Cure Kids New Zealand. She says she was inspired by local girl Ashleigh Neal, a Cure Kids ambassador who was born with a rare condition called Lymphangioma. “I was thinking of a fun event that we could host that would benefit a charitable organisation, and with it being Red Nose Day for Cure Kids around that time, it all fits in perfectly. “I’m excited as it’s going to be a lot of fun and supports a good cause,” she says. The competition run over two weekends challenging the women to a number of tasks. Asked what the tasks were, she says many of them will remain a secret until the day so they can’t be ‘practiced’ too much before the competition. “It will be a combination of home skills, thinking and some physical tasks but nothing too difficult. It’s for women only over the age of 18 and we are capping the number of contestants at 40,” she says. The Almost Perfect Gal competition will be held in two parts. The first on November 19 where all contestants take part. The top 10 will then go on to the finals stage on November 26. The final 10 women will receive goodie bags and the first three placings will be awarded some amazing prizes, Chrissy says. “First place wins a trip for two to Fiji which I’m sure would appeal to many,” she laughs. Because numbers are capped at 40 registrations must be done quickly to avoid disappointment. Forms are available at the Redwood Tavern.

Daisy Vavasour in the 10th anniversary Marlborough kids’ duathlon t-shirt she designed for this year’s event.

Kids’ Duathlon gives young athletes a start By Cathie Bell The Marlborough Kids’ Duathlon is 10 years old this year, and organisers are hoping to get a record number of entries. Registrations for the New World Marlborough Kids Duathlon in October are now open. While the duathlon isn’t until October 16, registrations close on Friday next week, September 23, when school holidays start, so organisers are encouraging parents to get their children’s entries in quickly. The event is open for children aged from six to 18 years of age. There are two courses, both off-road. The first course is a run or walk for one kilometre, then bike for three kilometres, and a final one kilometre run or walk. The second is a run or walk for two kilometres, then bike for five and a half kilometres, and a final run or walk for one kilometre. The duathlon is held at Brancott Vineyard, which is near Fairhall School. This year’s commemorative t-shirt is designed by peugeot Daisy Vavasour, a year seven .co.nz/308 student at Fairhall School.

Two off to touch rugby contest in Australia By Cathie Bell Tom Downes and Keelan Murrell are in Australia this week, competing as part of a New Zealand touch rugby development squad. Tom, from Blenheim, and Keelan, from Picton, are both Marlborough Boys’ College students and the trip is their first time overseas representing their country. The two left Blenheim on Sunday to attend a tournament in Australia. Tom says it is the national youth state championships on the Sunshine Coast, and they will be playing against Australian state teams at all levels. “We’re an under-15 team, but

in Australia, we’re versing under 17s, under 19s, heaps of different age groups.” Both are keen on touch rugby and hope to continue playing it for some time. But Keelan is a recent convert, having only picked touch rugby up last year. He’s been more a traditional rugby game up until now. Tom says he has been playing touch rugby since he was four, but he is still playing football and the touch version of rugby is the only one he likes. Keelan says they were picked for the New Zealand development squad from playing for Tasman at the New Zealand Tom Downes, left, and Keelan Murrell are representing New Zealand in nationals. touch rugby.

Pigeon racing On Saturday the first race of the old bird racing pigeon season commenced. The Blenheim Clubs birds raced from Rangiora, a distance of 230 km. The perfect weather conditions resulted in very fast times with the pigeons arriving to their individual lofts in rapid succession. Shirley Morrison of Spring Creek had a very good fly with her birds and won first place with a speed of 80.4 km/hr, followed closely by husband Donald whose pigeon traveled at 79.6 km/hr for second. Chris Bensley was only seconds behind with his third place bird recording 79.2 km/ hr followed by Alister Cooper at Renwick with 78.6 km/hr which only just pipped the bird of Two Fishers partnership of 78.5 km/hr. Another very close result was Nearo lofts in the Aratere Valley with a creditable 78.4 km/hr, and new member Ian McColm also of Renwick, had birds entered for their first ever race but still achieved 50 km/hr.

Makos away and home The Tasman Makos lost 30-27 to Otago in Dunedin on Saturday, but hope to redeem themselves against Northland in Nelson on Friday evening. The Mitre 10 provincial rugby championship has six games to go before the semi-finals and the Makos have yet to show convincing form to repeat the success of the previous season.
