Three months to build up the Christmas spirit in town Continued from page 1 The Blenheim Business Association, which is a group of central business district retailers and business owners, met last week to discuss plans for Christmas. Katrina spoke at the meeting to brief association members on what Marlborough 4 Fun is doing as part of its contract with the Marlborough District Council. The big events are the Santa Parade on December 3, and the Christmas Festival on December 15. Katrina says both events benefit from participation, and she encourages businesses to consider having a float in the parade, and to stay open

late for the festival. She hopes to have fireworks at the end of the evening on December 15, being launched from the top of a central business district building. “The festival won’t just be in the Forum, there will be performers round the different streets, there will be more of them this year. “There will be lots more kids’ activities too.” There will be a street market too, she says, but it is likely to be slightly smaller than last year, with less streets blocked off. “We get 4000 people in town at that time. There is an opportunity for retailers to be open for a few more

hours, but they don’t have to.” Association members are keen to help get the Christmas spirit in the central business district, and Anthony says the association wants to work with retailers to help everyone benefit. While Christmas is still three months away, retailers and business owners need to plan staff rosters and opening hours now. Win says Christmas is an important time of year, and the association wants to make the business district more vibrant. It wants to see several weeks of build-up to Christmas, he says, rather than just one or two events, and a

group from the association will be working to put some ideas in place. Input from others interested in helping will be welcome, he says. One idea is to have ‘town ambassadors’, people wandering around the central business district, encouraging people to shop, visit cafes, and take part in activities. Win says retailers can decorate their shops and there may be things happening in the pocket parks with street performers and entertainers. “We need things for all ages to do, not just children and families, but teenagers and older people. “We want to see the town getting into the festive spirit.”

Power trust delays customer payout By Cathie Bell The Marlborough Electric Power Trust won’t be making its annual distribution to consumers before Christmas, instead holding off until early next year. Trust chairman Ross Inder says Marlborough Lines has aligned its end of financial date to that of Yealands Estate Wines, and that has a flow-on effect on the trust. Ma rlb oroug h L i nes would normally end its financial year on 31 March, but from this year, it has moved it to 30 June. Ross says that delays the payout to consumers, as the trust gets the money from Marlborough Lines and holds onto it for six

months, enabling it to then be distributed tax-free to consumers. “That’s the only reason for the deferment, but it will be bigger than it has been in the past.” He says the payout, usually $50, will be paid out later, probably in February, and it was likely to be about $150. It will be credited to consumers’ power accounts. The increase is because Marlborough Lines’ purchase of Yealands is ‘going from strength to strength’. “The profit is well ahead of budget.” The trust owns all the shares in Marlborough Lines on behalf of the power users of Marlborough. Yealands going from strength to strength is likely to increase the annual Marlborough Lines payout.

An emotional Alistair Sowman speaks for the last time as mayor at a Marlborough District Council meeting, with chief executive Mark Wheeler, and district secretary Tony Quirk.

Emotional mayor gutted at council disarray

By Cathie Bell Retiring mayor Alistair Sowman hit out at the people who gave a secretly-recorded transcript of a closed meeting to social media at the Marlborough District Council’s last full council meeting of this term. After four terms, Alistair is retiring, and he used his valedictory speech yesterday to condemn those who ‘destroyed the trust of colleagues’ and hid behind false names on social media to abuse him and other councillors. He said the recording of a publicexcluded meeting in April and passing it to a controversial blogger was a ‘betrayal of trust’. It shows a lack of personal integrity, a lack of ethical values, and a lack of respect, he says. “It’s dirty politics, and it’s not welcome in Marlborough. It is an understatement to say I’m

profoundly disappointed.” The climate in local government politics has changed, Alistair says, particularly in the past term, and he blames that on social media, with people not using their real names and staying anonymous, often with many different online personas. “Anonymous attacks, nasty comments, inaccurate statements can be bandied about. Councillors have to put up with that today. “What sort of people are going to work in an environment lacking trust and respect? We get the council we deserve. If vitriol and malice are acceptable, I fear for our future representation.” Council meetings only go into public-excluded sessions to meet personal and commercial privacy reasons, Alistair says, and a review of council meetings showed 92 per cent of matters are conducted in

open meetings. Of the 380 reports received by Council over the course of the last year, 351 were dealt with in open meetings. The others, generally involving matters of commercial sensitivity or involving matters of personal privacy, were properly dealt with in public-excluded sessions. “Many of the issues initially dealt with in confidence are handled that way while third parties or contractual negotiations are involved. “Once negotiations are completed or outcomes are notified to the individuals involved, particularly with appointment processes, the information is released in public.” In a statement yesterday, district secretary Tony Quirk says all staff and councillors, including Alistair and chief executive Mark Wheeler, at the April committee meeting are being asked to sign a statutory

declaration declaring they were not in any way responsible for a secret recording of a meeting or in the release of that recording to any third party. A statutory declaration is a statement sworn under oath that legally binds any person who has signed it. It is a criminal offense to knowingly make a false declaration. He says council’s legal advice is that the recording of discussions within public-excluded sessions raises issues of breach of various duties under the Local Government Act and the Privacy Act and the issue is sufficiently serious to warrant an investigation of those present at the meeting, both councillors and staff. The process will also include a requirement that councillors surrender, if requested, their councilowned ipads for inspection.

By Cathie Bell Marlborough’s Battle of Britain commemoration service was a homecoming in more ways than one for Air Commodore Darryn Webb. Darryn gave the keynote address at the service, held inside the Clubs of Marlborough on Sunday because of bad weather. As well as his parents and great-aunt being in the audience, he got to catch up with his grandparents’ good friend, ‘Bunty’ Bunt, who flew Spitfires and Hurricanes during World War Two. Bunty also celebrated his 96th birthday on Sunday, and had ‘a wee dram’ after the service. He was in good form, saying he believed strongly that the battles of the wars should

be commemorated. “It’s a time we can remember and by God, I do, all the mates that didn’t make it.” Bunty says he loved flying the Spitfire, and volunteered to join the Royal Air Force’s international squadron 43. He says he didn’t fly in the Battle of Britain itself, but was involved in the defence of Gibraltar, North Africa, and over Cassino in Italy. Darryn says the Bunts were very good friends with his grandparents and it was ‘really good’ to see him doing so well. “He’s absolutely razor-sharp. There’s a twinkle in his eye still.” Coming to Marlborough to attend a commemoration service is always welcome, he says.

Blenheim Toyota Every car cared for

Every car has to impress over 65 of our staff before it impresses you. The Grovetown School ‘make a difference’ team have raised money for pest traps, back from left, Quinn Grigor, Thomas Large, Maddie Large, and Maggie Lindstrom, front from left, Ollie Yuen, Ben Carson, Jacob Large, Patrick Andrew, and Samuel Andrew.

Trapping efforts Story and photo by Cathie Bell Grovetown School students have held a fundraising sausage sizzle so successful, they are now able to supply traps for the school as well as Grovetown Lagoon. Students from the school’s MAD Team, which stands for ‘Make A Difference’, spend a lot of time down at the lagoon, which is close to the school. They decided to hold a sausage sizzle to help the lagoon’s restoration efforts. Teacher Mel Hewer, who helps the MAD team, says the children held a bake sale and a lemonade stand, along with the sausage sizzle. New World Blenheim donated $30 of ingredients, and a family donated the sausages. The students’ efforts raised enough funds

to buy more traps than originally intended, and the school would look at having traps at the school as well, she says. Student Maddie Large says it would be good to have traps at the school as there are rats there, attracted by the school’s chickens. Student Quinn Grigor says the students are keen to get rid of pests, such as rats, from the lagoon. “They’re killing the native birds and wildlife.” He says he and friend Ben Carson often bike down to the lagoon and they swim there. The lagoon trust also has a native plant nursery at the school and surplus plants have been used to grow a ‘forest’ on part of the school’s grounds.

Malayan conflict marked By Cathie Bell The service of Malayan Conflict veterans, including those from Marlborough, paved the way for the formation of New Zealand’s professional armed forces, and the formation of the modern states of Malaysia and Singapore, a commemorative service in Blenheim was told last week. About 50 people attended the service on Friday, held in the Returned Services Association lounge because of bad weather. Marlborough mayor Alistair Sowman says the service and sacrifice ‘across the generations’ is respected. “It is something I have noticed as mayor for the past 12 years, the increasing interest in our military past. “No matter your political views, there is respect for those who took part, not just for the large historic battles, but for the more recent conflicts as well.” Councillor John Leggett says it is surprising the Malayan Conflict was not formally recognised until a few years ago. Too many cats Dear Ed, This is an open letter to all cat-owners. Why should the responsibilities of owning a cat be different from that of owning a dog? How is it that cat-owners allow their animals to roam the streets day and night, unsupervised and without a leash? Cats are predators. Cats are indiscriminate as to where they go. Cats are a hazard on the roads. Since cats are deemed to be someone’s ‘property’, isn’t it relevant that cat-owners are held accountable for containing their cats, either indoors, or outdoors in a fenced containment.

Geckos were front and centre at a recent Kiwi Conservation Club meeting.

There are too many cats in the environment, and too many cat-owners who don’t seem to be aware that cats are their own responsibility, not that of the community to tidy up and manage. Especially at this time of year when the cat population increases, and when SPCA is inundated with unwanted kittens, PLEASE, cat-owners - contain your cats indoors. There are many products available that enable this to be a simple and easy routine, and when you take your cats out, make sure they are on a leash and under your supervision. Manson S. Springlands

Big Surprise Dear Ed, About three weeks ago, I was at Mitre 10 getting lots of plants and I crowded everything onto my scooter. That’s when I must have lost my wallet. Hunted everywhere, went into the police to see if it had been handed in. No luck, now I had the job of getting new cards, there wasn’t much money in it so that

didn’t worry me. But the phone rang this Monday to tell me that Countdown Redwoodtown had the wallet and could I call in and get it? Wow, after all that time, thank you so much! You didn’t leave your name, so I’m thanking you here. Kathie Warren Blenheim

Geckos galore By Glenise Dreaver Twelve local children, most belonging to the Kiwi Conservation Club, have been able to touch and handle some of the 14 species of rare geckos and skinks found only in Marlborough. They and their parents attended a gecko information session held at the Marlborough Museum at Brayshaw Park recently. They were introduced to the small reptiles by Roger Larsen, a licensed breeder. For forty years, Roger has been breeding the geckos in purpose-built enclosures at Grovetown which attract moths in, but from which the geckos cannot escape. He now has a collection of 250. One of the club’s leaders, Hazel Monk, said the reason for the survival of the rare species in Marlborough was believed to be the isolated and relatively predatorfree islands in the Marlborough Sounds, which have provided a safe environment.

Martial arts is his life Robert Gemmell of Picton is known world-wide as a martial arts expert. Here he speaks to Glenise Dreaver about his career. Years of study and training have seen Robert qualify as a Grand Master in Kempo. “Kempo is the mother art,” he says. “Many styles of martial arts trace their origin back to it.” It started with occasional lessons from his father. He was an electrical engineer whose work in the New Zealand Army and then the police took the family around New Zealand after they immigrated here from Glasgow in the nineteen fifties. The greatest impact on the young Robert was, however, the time on Stephens Island when his father was lighthouse keeper there. “It took me thirty years of travelling and learning to get back here, but I did it.” On leaving school, Robert trained as a precision engineer in the railway workshops in Lower Hutt. “Engineering is in my blood. I loved it.” Newly qualified, he soon spotted a gap for an engineering business in Porirua. By 1976, the fast-growing venture was three years old and employing over twenty people. Robert was able to take time out to further train in martial arts in Japan and China. But on December 20 1976, things changed within seconds. Flash floods after the Porirua stream blocked destroyed everything. “I dropped the phone and ran, but still ended up in mud and water up to my chest. “It all went under.” With an emphasis on expansion and new machines, Robert was under-insured. He refused bankruptcy though. “I paid everyone. “It was very tough. I had a family with three children and I decided to teach martial arts full time, though professional martial arts were new here.” A turning point came when the New Zealand Police asked him to instruct them in self defence, including the use of a long baton, the PR24 . He began to realise that with the 1981 Springbok tour looming, those long batons could be used in real life self defence by the Police.

“Martial arts have a very strict code of ethics and discipline. I’d only agreed to teach the police on that understanding.” The Police had, he said, maintained this code in the training. The tour was, he says, ‘a surprise’. He was pleased to receive a letter of thanks from the-then Secretary of the Police Association, Bob Moody, commending him on the strict training, ensuring the batons caused no major catastrophes or deaths. Some members of the Team Policing Unit he had trained moved on to the Diplomatic Protection Corps and Robert continued his work with them. He also undertook more training in Kempo

in Japan and Kung Fu in China. His martial arts business was successful with branches New Zealand-wide and across Australia. “I lived out of a suitcase.” The Porirua Jade Centre has been central to his expansion plan, a motel built principally to house instructors who came worldwide to study and qualify to open their own branch of Kempo. He has been a key provider in the ACC falls prevention programme, worked with self defence classes in schools and Tai Chi with those 80 years and older. It is, he says, a softer form of martial arts, with benefits that include a sense of well-

being and stress management. It helps others. “I’ve wanted to do that since I was young. As a boy I even thought of social work or the priesthood.” That’s why in 2008, when Robert retired from professional teaching, he offered free Tai Chi classes in Picton and at other centres too. At 8am each day the classes begin, in winter in York Street, in summer at Jade Lodge. Sometimes the school gets ‘propped up’ from his own pocket, ‘but that’s not important’. “Tai Chi’s so empowering. It changes lives dramatically. “And it’s given me a wonderful life.”

Skinder Kaur, Jean Keenan, Rod Hill, Marlene Weatherall, Norma Cavanagh, Eppie Richardson and Lorraine The St John charity shop in Boyce Street is doing well. Milmine are one of the volunteer teams celebrating the second birthday of Blenheim’s St John Charity Shop this week.

Shop celebrates two years Story and photos by Celeste Alexander This week is very special for the St John Charity Shop on Boyce Street as it’s celebrating its second birthday. Marlborough St John manager Rod Hill says having the charity shop has made a difference and well-surpassed all expectations.

“It’s made such a difference to our ability to purchase new and modern equipment for our operational staff. “One great example would be that we have been able to purchase five life packs for our ambulances valued at $22,000 each. Every cent made in the shop is spent in Marlborough and we can’t thank the community enough

The Olympic Games were the theme of an interschool day for the students of Wairau Valley School, Ward School, and Lake Rotoiti School recently. Students were put into teams that represented different countries and they competed in running races, hammer throws, sack races, an obstacle course, and more. Organisers say this was a challenging way to promote the Olympic values and form friendships. A medal ceremony completed a great day with Team Nepal winning Bronze, Team Fiji winning Silver, and the gold medal winners were Team Papua New Guinea.

for its support,” he says. Some days can see up to 70 people go through the shop as well as a huge range of items donated. “Marlborough people have been very responsive to the shop, we get wonderful things donated and people come and buy loads of stuff.

“Our 30 plus volunteers give their time willingly and are very proactive and enthusiastic,” Rod says. The Blenheim St John Charity Shop has been such a shining example that others are being opened in Nelson, Westport and on the West Coast.

Say goodbye to unsightly, aching, varicose veins

By Celeste Alexander It’s just a matter of weeks before Unichem Springlands Pharmacy reveals its brand new expansion and refit. The pharmacy is almost tripling in size, going from 100 to 287 square metres and will be incorporating some very exciting new additions. The expansion is being done in two stages. Stage one is currently being built on the space previously occupied by a cafe and garden centre. Once completed the pharmacy will shift in around the middle of October, and the existing pharmacy will be demolished and refitted as part of the project’s stage two. According to Tim Roper, one of the pharmacy’s four directors, it’s hoped that the expansion will be completed by November. One of the main features that’s new to the pharmacy will be the inclusion of NZ Post, he says. “The post shop will remain where it is until February 1, 2017 then it will be incorporated into the store. “The only real difference being made to the post shop will be that it won’t be opening accounts for Kiwi Bank, but instead we will refer people on,” he says. The Post Shop will also be open seven days a week, Saturday until 5pm and Sunday until 1pm, and the post office boxes will move from where they are now to the front of the pharmacy, backing on to the new NZ Post

area. Being a Unichem pharmacy, Tim says they wanted to work in collaboration with Unichem and looked at other pharmacies to see how the latest technology and refits worked for them. “One in particular located in Auckland had an impressive retail style. We decided to mimic how each brand had its own unit and so we have created a 12m wall for vitamins and supplements that will be illuminated and branded. “We will also have a new over-the-counter section for pain, eye care, skin care as well as a beauty ‘gondola’ that will hold cosmetics including a new brand “ he says. The expansion has also allowed for two consultation rooms which will allow for a greater collaboration between health professionals, Tim says. “In Springlands we work with GP’s, the health centre and Springlands Lifestyle Village so we needed to take on board what they wanted too.” A new staff room, store room and offices for management have also been included. In the dispensary area a new state-of-the-art ‘Pharmacare’ system of shelving is being installed that will deliver stock forward when a packet is taken off the shelf. Entry into the new pharmacy building will be through double doors from the front car park area and the existing entry from the mall will be retained.

The pharmacy was purchased in 2009 from Stan Barnett which at the time, belonged to the Amcal Pharmacy group and had two locations in Springlands and Blenheim’s CBD. It is owned by four directors, Paul Townend, Kim Lischener Crawford, Tim Roper and Vivien Mackintosh. After nearly two years the lease came up for renewal on the CBD pharmacy so the decision was made to close it and plan to expand the Springlands pharmacy. The pharmacy’s growth meant a mini refit was required. This handled the increased business but was never intended

to be a long term solution, director Tim Roper says. “We recognised that we would need more space and our landlord John Derry was keen to see it happen too. What John is doing in Springlands is great and he’s great to work with.” According to Tim, Springlands has become a ‘very busy area’. “In my perspective Blenheim seems to be developing out that way and with the strong health focus that exists in Springlands, the Unichem Springlands Pharmacy will now be in the position to meet the growing demands,” he says.

VOTE COLIN KING FOR MAYOR AMBITIOUS FOR MARLBOROUGH

Why Colin King? Colin is standing because he is concerned that Marlborough has stagnated. There are not enough jobs for our young people. He will lead a council that will provide businesses with confidence that Marlborough is a great place to both invest and to grow. He is committed to responsible spending based on fair and affordable rates while emphasising the importance of council providing core public infrastructure. He will address the backlog of these critical infrastructure projects as a matter of priority. Colin believes Marlborough deserves a mayor equally attuned to business and central government as they are to the local community needs. We need a vibrant mayor who is able to unite council, to be ambitious for everyone living in Marlborough. If elected Mayor Colin will establish a much-needed register of pecuniary interests to strengthen public trust and confidence in our council. This will improve transparency, openness, and accountability.

Background Colin is happily married to Lynnette, with four adult children and has been actively involved in Marlborough for over 30 years. A former champion shearer, he has also served on the New Zealand Meat Board, Beef and Wool boards, owned several businesses, and holds a Bachelor of Business Studies double major (Accounting & Management). Most recently, he served as the Member of Parliament for Kaikoura for nine years. He wants to help Marlborough thrive, creating the kinds of jobs that allow our children and grandchildren to live here and benefit from the enviable lifestyle and environment we enjoy today.

Your vote is important A vote for Colin King is a vote for both yourselves and for Marlborough. Colin’s reputation has been built on openness and honesty. He also knows what it really means to work, and is keen to make sure people on fixed incomes aren’t ignored by the council.

The Issues Rates Council cannot continually increase rates above the rate of inflation, in order to cover its increased spending. Those on fixed incomes or with young families struggle to pay bills, and ever increasing council spending hurts those who can least afford it.

Economic Growth Council plays an important role in job creation. Colin believes the MDC needs to review its regulatory regime, making it far easier for businesses to create jobs. He favours collaborations with other councils, iwi and central government that can provide new opportunities and investment for Marlborough.

Endorsements “Colin genuinely cares about businesses “The assistance Colin provided Te Korowai within the Marlborough region and takes through his relationship with Ministers and pride in their successes. Regulation Colin is concerned that Marlborough is losing out to other regions because the MDC has imposed draconian rules on businesses wanting to expand – costs that often make it too difficult and too expense to do even the simple things like add a room on to a house or build a shed.

Transparency The MDC has alienated people in the community with its lack of transparency. There are too many public excluded meetings, and no comprehensive pecuniary interests register. Colin favours open meetings and keeping the public engaged by allowing them access to council information.

Jetpack could be seen in vineyard By Cathie Bell The Martin jetpack could have been used to fight the effects of frost over Marlborough vineyards, its inventor Glenn Martin says. He was the keynote speaker at a small business seminar held last Thursday at the ASB Theatre by business directory advisors Yellow, talking about how he took his former business Martin Aviation from an idea to a practical jetpack. Glenn says his jetpack has the capability to fly a controlled route, and he remembers an application from people in Marlborough interested in flying it for frost protection. “It’s one-tenth of the cost of running a helicopter, and a far more fun way to go out and check vineyards too.” However, it wouldn’t give vineyard neighbours any relief from early morning wakeups, as the jetpack is pretty loud, he says, ‘about the same as a helicopter’. Glenn says he’s retired from the company now, and is not sure what happened to that idea. However, he’s still a fan of Marlborough, Business journalist and commentator Berflying into Omaka airfield as a private pilot. nard Hickey talks to a meeting in Blenheim. “There are a lot of flying enthusiasts here.” He is particularly impressed with the engines that are way better quality than the aircraft engineering businesses based here, original ones.” and reckons that more should be made of The other speakers were journalist and comthese specialist businesses. mentator Bernard Hickey, who spoke about “They’re quite unique. Colour and glitz with confetti Some of the most colourful and fun wedding photos are captured when confetti is thrown. Did you know that besides confetti, there are a number of other unique ways to get the confetti effect? Flowers, flags and even colourful sprinkles… there are so many options for getting those priceless photos. Take it a step further by providing a fun confetti bar for your guests so they can make their own custom creations. They will enjoy showering you and your new spouse with their confetti during the day. Here are some ideas to give you inspiration. • Add a little special shimmer to your photos with sequins or glitter instead of confetti. While the sparkles might stick with you for the rest of the night, there’s nothing more fabulous and festive than gold glitter. • One great way to minimise

the mess of confetti is to make mini flags with fun celebratory sayings. These can be DIY projects and your guests will enjoy waving them all night. • Dried flower confetti is a great option. Give them to guests before the ceremony, and have them throw the dried flowers at the big kiss. The colours and detail will make the photos amazing. And, since they’re biodegradable, you probably don’t need to worry about cleaning up. • Pom poms are also a great alternative to confetti. Since they’re larger and more fluffy, you won’t need to worry about the bits and pieces getting in your eyes. • Have a sweet tooth? Show it off by giving your guests sprinkles to throw instead of confetti. Of course, rice was the traditional thing to throw at a wedding to wish the bride and groom luck. Rice is a great choice, but for an added touch try packaging it in a unique way.

Sign your love Having signs up at weddings is a fun way to share cute sayings with your guests. They can also be used to give directions and seating plans. Here are a few examples of what can be painted on signs, written in chalk or printed in frames. • Choose a seat not a side, we’re all family once the knot is tied. • He stole her heart, so she’s stealing his last name. • Every love story is beauti-

ful, but ours is my favourite. • Once in a while, in the middle of an ordinary life, love gives us a fairytale. • Happily ever after starts here. • Today two families become one. We ask that you choose a seat, not a side. • Come as you are, stay as long as you can. We are all family so no seating plan. • Welcome family and friends. While the duathlon isn’t until October 16, registrations close on Friday, when school holidays start, so organisers are encouraging parents to get their children’s entries in quickly. Entries can be taken later, but they will cost more and children won’t be able to order the commemorative t-shirt, they say. The event is open for children aged from six to 18 years of age. The duathlon was a starting point for former Marlborough Boys’ College student Thomas Westend, now a keen multi-sport athlete and recipient of numerous Marlborough Boys’ College awards including the James d’Auvergne Memorial Trophy last year for best all-round sportsman. Duathlon as it was a Marlborough event. “And swimming was never a strong point, so it was the Marlborough Kids Duathlon.” He enjoys how challenging multisport is because you really push yourself physically and mentally to the limits. “I also enjoy that it’s an individual event so everything is up to how well you perform, there’s no one else to rely on.” The Marlborough Kids Duathlon helped him get interested in multisport because it was a local event that

anyone could participate in, he says. “I’ve always enjoyed running and occasionally cycling at that age, so getting to combine these two sports was quite exciting. It wasn’t until high school that I really got involved in cycling though.” It was enjoyable because there are so many people competing. “I’ve always been really competitive, so it felt great racing against that amount of competitors. “Looking back on the Marlborough Kids duathlon, it’s a great event for people to enter who don’t like racing hard as there are all abilities participating. Since going to university, he’s had to focus more on his studies, but he’s still running about four or five times a week and doing some other strength training to keep as fit as possible. “I’m planning on getting properly into training again next year hopefully though, as there won’t be as much pressure put on me with the study. “My current multisport aspirations are to get back to the level I was at last year and build on it for going away to races overseas in the future. I would like to have a group to train with though as last year most of the training I did was alone as no one in my year group at school did the sport.”

Squash player’s abilities and effort recognised By Cathie Bell The Marlborough College Old Boys Squash Club has presented Nic Dann with life membership. Club officials say it is with great pleasure that Nic Dann of the Marlborough College Old Boys Squash Club was presented with life membership to the club at the final of social squash on Thursday last week. Nic has been an active member of the club for over 17 years, as a committee member, organizer of various squash leagues, coach and many other varied rolls within the club, as well as having competed at various tournaments successfully representing the College

club as well as the Marlborough region, they say. “She was the founder of Blowout squash, Crazee squash and double onesie tournaments, all great events that have encouraged many new players to the club. “Her coaching abilities have helped many juniors to compete at a high level in the sport, as well as improving the abilities of many senior members. “Her enthusiasm keeping juniors coming through the sport has entailed coaching, team selection and many trips away with the Rai Shield and Russ Rooster teams as well as the secondary school teams to South Island and national

secondary school competitions – the Marlborough Girls College team achieved third place in New Zealand this year thanks to Nic’s time and effort. “Nic’s daughter, Kirianna, has represented New Zealand in the secondary schools tournament and captained the team for the past two years showing the level of skill and dedication passed to her by her mother. “It was fantastic to be able to present this award to Nic in front of a large group including our two other life members Norm Wilson and Pauline Troon.” RIGHT: Nic Dann is now a life member of the Marlborough College Old Boys Squash Club.

Sport and Recreation Minister Jonathan Coleman and Disability Issues Minister Nicky Wagner say the country is extremely proud of what our Paralympians achieved in Rio. “Our 31 Kiwi Paralympians achieved 21 medals in total - nine gold, five silver, and seven bronze – that’s three medals over their target,” they say. “On a medals per capita basis, New Zealand topped the table, maintaining the top position it achieved in London 2012.

It was such a great way to celebrate Louie Greig’s eighth birthday two years ago that they all got together again at the Tasman Makos’ game last Friday to do it all again. Keen rugby fans, from left, Leo Marfell, Bede Elkington, Hunter Shore, Louie Greig, Logan Flood, Alex Greig, and Baxter Croad went to Nelson to watch the Makos beat the Northland Taniwhas at Trafalgar Park to celebate Louie’s 10th birthday.
