Bringing new flying stories to the aero club Continued from page 1 Club secretary Raylene Wadworth says having three women go solo within a week at the club is ‘a very unusual feat, considering a majority of students here are men’. The three women didn’t know each other before they flew solo, but have met up now, and think it’s ‘cool’ they all flew solo within the same week. Next up is the goal of getting private pilot’s licenses, and on to more aviation achievements, with Molly wanting to become an airline pilot and Nicky considering learning to

fly a helicopter as well. All three have family connections to flying. Both Molly’s and Alice’s fathers have pilots’ licences and their own planes. Molly says her first flight was when she was three weeks’ old and her father Nigel flew her to meet her grandparents. Now 18 years old, she says she has wanted to fly since she was little. “I love it.” Nicky and Alice did their first solo in the club’s plane, but Molly did hers in her father’s PA18A-Super Cub,

known as a ‘taildragger’ because it has a wheel at the back as well as two at the front, enabling it to land in riverbeds. Nicky says she was scared of flying, but has a daughter who is a pilot with Cathay Pacific, based in Hong Kong. “I’ve been putting so much into my career, my life was a bit uni-dimensional, I wanted to do something else outside teaching. “It put me in the position as a learner, which is good for a teacher.” After going solo, she isn’t afraid of flying anymore.

“I was a little scared on my second solo. My first one was great, but the second one was a wee bit bumpy and there was another plane on the circuit with me, but it was fun.” Alice won the ZONTA aviation fellowship and says it gave her ‘an extra push’ to fly solo. She grew up around planes, as her father has his pilot’s license and his own plane. A l l t h r e e wom en say t h e Marlborough Aero Club has a good community feel and has helped them achieve their first flying goals.

Model show a lifelong passion By Cathie Bell Collecting models can be a lifetime’s hobby, and they certainly are for Blenheim man Warren Piesse, who is organising a model show this weekend. The Nelson Marlborough Truck Modelers’ Club is holding a model show on Saturday at the Redwoodtown Hall from 10am until 3pm, for a gold coin entry. Warren says this is an annual model vehicle show to promote the club and model vehicles in general. The club was formed in 1979 and has had a presence in Marlborough since then. The model show has exhibitors from Nelson and Marlborough, and will show the club’s varied interests, he says. These include aircraft, fire engines, diecast models, and kitsets, as well as

Lego models and Tonka toys. “There will be on display many things of interest to a wide range of ages and interests. A lot of models have been collected over many years as this can be a lifetime hobby.” He started collecting in 1965, when his parents bought Matchbox toys as birthday and Christmas presents for him. The models had to be ordered from overseas then, he says, as you couldn’t buy them in Invercargill where he lived when young. “You lined up at the Post Office, you were allowed to buy one pound a day, they bought them and you’d send off to Britain for the models, and three months later, they’d arrive.” RIGHT: Warren Piesse, with some of his huge collection of models.

Tea dance recalls seniors’ crowning glory days By Cathie Bell Sunday’s tea dance for seniors has brought back memories for three Blenheim women. Ellen Jarvis, Nancy Hammond, and Elsa Cresswell were the ‘princesses’ of the 1946 Queen’s Carnival Ball in Blenheim and the three intend to re-live their ‘crowning glories’ at the seniors’ tea dance this weekend. The tea dance, to be held downstairs at the Clubs of Marlborough from 4pm on Sunday, is a special one – the seventh year the dance has been held, but the first year it is a tea dance. Organising committee member Ken Ham says the dance has previously been in the afternoon, but to make the seventh dance special, it has been moved to the evening with a meal to be served. Fellow organising committee member Janet Woolf says it is an opportunity for people to dress up and have some fun. But they needn’t worry about knowing how to dance, everyone is welcome, she says, even if they just want to sit and catch up with friends old and new. “People should come and enjoy the music, meet and greet with others.” The theme is ‘Putting on the Ritz’ and it will be a special event for the three ladies, who will be special VIP guests for the dance. The three were the princesses for the 1946 ball, and Nancy Mears as she was then was crowned the Queen of the ball. All three are still living in

inbrief Frequency change Boaties and anyone else out in Marlborough coastal waters need to know that the local maritime radio frequency is changing and that they should tune in to Channel 18 for local weather and messages from Saturday 1 October, Marlborough Harbourmaster Alex van Wijngaarden says. The distress channel – Channel 16 – is NOT changing. Alex says the change has been necessary because of the need to make space on the bandwidth for some newly allocated international services for ship tracking and data services. Existing VHF radio handsets should all be able to pick up Channel 18 without difficulty, he says.

Tramper rescued Cold, wet, but otherwise uninjured, a Canterbury man was brought out of the bush this morning by a volunteer LandSAR assisted by Police Search and Rescue, after spending a cold and wet night high on Mt Stanley in the outer Marlborough Sounds. He phoned police after becoming disorientated in low cloud which enveloped the ridge the tramper was walking on. Ellen Jarvis, Nancy Hammond, and Elsa Cresswell are looking forward to the seniors’ tea dance, and plan to re-live the memories of their 1946 Queen’s Ball.

Blenheim in their own homes and will be guests of honour on Sunday. Janet says the Queen’s Carnival Ball in 1946 was held to raise money for an extension of the Marlborough Returned Services’ Association building, in preparation for the men returning home from the war. The three princesses raised money in the community and the one who raised the most was crowned queen. Nancy was the sports princess,

Ellen Priddle as she was then the service princess, and Elsa Burtenshaw as she was then the business princess. Sports won on the night, and Nancy was crowned queen. About 2500 pounds was raised, which in 1946 was a ‘huge’ amount of money, Janet says. Anyone else involved in the 1946 ball should get in touch and come along to the tea dance, she says. “So many people were involved Janet Woolf, one of the seniors’ tea in that event.” dance organisers.

Also carrying out a river clean up are Will and Rose Parsons who operate local business Driftwood Eco Tours. The Opawa River clean up that was to be held at Will and Rose Parsons’ property last Sunday was postponed to this coming Sunday. It will be held from 10am till noon at 749 Dillon’s Point Road, Blenheim. Please bring gum boots, garden gloves and a sack. The event is suitable for children 10 years or older when accompanied by an adult. There will be a prize draw for two kayak tours as well as a sausage sizzle and complimentary glass of Opawa wine or orange juice after the event.

By Cathie Bell Mayoral candidate Colin King has inflated the cost of shows at the new theatre in his speeches to candidates’ meetings. He told the Picton candidates’ meeting on Monday that it costs $100 a person to attend the Blenheim Musical Theatre production Oliver, which is running from October 14 to 20. He also said it has cost ratepayers $25 million to build the theatre, but ratepayers contributed a $5 million grant and have also provided a $5.1m underwriting on its loans. The old theatre building was bought by

the council for $6 million, but it expects to sell that for more now it is fully tenanted. For the show, $100 is the price for a family of two adults and two children to attend. When Colin was told this, he said he had been told it by someone, but ‘thank you for drawing it to my attention’. “The point I’m making is those that can’t afford to go to the theatre are being used to subsidise those that do go.” He says he hopes the theatre does make money, but to do so, it will need to hold conferences. “That theatre has been done, we need to add the other parts of the jigsaw together.”

School memories for family Story and photo by Cathie Bell Five generations of this family have been to Grovetown School, and four of them will be at the school’s 150th jubilee at Labour Weekend. Naida Sadd and her daughter Natasha Sadd, grand-daughter Shannon Diu, and great-granddaughters Amelia and Neika Diu met at the school last week to have a look around before next month’s jubilee. “It’s a great school.” Naida’s father Carl Sutherland went to Grovetown School as well, but at its original site on State Highway One. The school was there from 1866 until June 1944, when it moved to its current site on the corner of Vickerman and Fell Streets. She says the family are ‘real Grovetownites’, living close to the school all their lives. “We used to know everyone

here.” Grovetown School office manager Debbie Wallis says just over 100 people are booked for the jubilee’s dinner. Registrations are still coming in, she says. “They’re not closing until October 14, and we’ve still got people wanting to come. “It’s great for such a little school.” Grovetown School has 74 pupils at the moment, Debbie says. That is big, historically, with roll numbers changing over the years, sometimes as low as 30. “There are a lot of family ties in this school, it’s really interesting. “My own children came here, and the architect of the first school is in one branch of my family, and another branch of the family sold this site for the school.”

Dear Ed, Congratulations to the whistle blowers, as without them, we wouldn’t have a democracy in this country. While the outgoing mayor obsesses about the leak in the Council, he seems to have forgotten the real issue, the secret meetings which have been happening on his watch. There is no excuse good enough to deny the public from attending council meetings as it’s the ratepayers that pay their wages. The public have the right to know what is going on especially when it comes to money being spent on projects like the ASB theatre. Time for a change to get out and vote for those that speak the truth and don’t go along with the current status quo. Marigold Blenheim

Who would vote Recording for a traitor? Dear Ed, I note that one of the in camera council meetings was secretly recorded and the details of that meeting made public. (Wednesday – 21 September Page 3). This is a gutless cowardly act perpetrated by someone without any scruples or morals. One must sympathise with Mayor Sowman in his condemnation of this behaviour. It never ceases to amaze me what people will say or do when they do not have to disclose their identity. I doubt this person will ever identify him or herself voluntarily with local body elections coming up. Who would vote for a traitor? No doubt this offender has some sort of childish, perverted pygmy logic, which in his or her own mind justifies his or her actions. That is precisely the mindset of overseas offenders who carry out acts of terrorism. Trust me. I know. Neville Higgison Rarangi

SLOOOW Computer!!!

Are you for ever waiting for things to happen? Yes, computers do slow down over time, this is quite natural and the good news is that it can be remedied. Just like a car computers need a certain amount of maintenance which if not done will lead to “slooow computer” syndrome. If you have recently had ultrafast broadband installed and things aren’t happening as fast as you think they should let us give your computer a good service and clean out, even if you are still on ordinary broadband your computer will thank you for it.

Dear Ed, I read that the mayor is disappointed that the closed door meeting was recorded and the contents released online. Does the Mayor not realise that this was done as a direct result that the council was to discuss the finances of the ill-conceived theatre project in secret? A project the ratepayers will end up paying for. With the upcoming local elections looming, it is time for the people of Blenheim to consider who was it on the council who agreed to underwrite this project. An agreement given with no accountability needed no due diligence to establish costs and how our money was to be spent? Cost too much, that’s ok just ask the council for more money. Now is time for new faces to replace the old boys’ club and hopefully this sorry saga can be sorted. Cancel the plans this council has to spend $20 million on a new library complex. We all know where this money will come from, the same people who will end up paying for the theatre, AKA the ratepayer. KIWI Blenheim

Funerals to upholstery Blenheim man Lloyd Bush has spent the past 13 years working in the funeral industry and is now looking forward to a new challenge, his new upholstery business. Lloyd talks to reporter Celeste Alexander about his life and what has led him into a whole new career. Before the funeral industry Lloyd began working for a commercial tomato grower, carrying out the maintenance and supervising the picking before a stint working overseas. In 2003, after working overseas, Lloyd’s wife Ang, experienced the loss of her father. Lloyd returned to New Zealand prior to when he passed away and says it was through the dealings with the hospice and funeral director that he decided he wanted to get involved in the industry. “I went door knocking at Geoffrey T Sowman Funeral Directors and they gave me a role assisting after hours and on the weekends,” he says. In early 2004 a permanent position became available funeral directing which Lloyd went into, learning ‘on-the-job’ initially. “It was much like an apprenticeship, I learned skills first then went on to gain my qualifications,” he says. For 18 months Lloyd worked full time and studied through the Wellington Institute of Technology and came out with a Diploma in Funeral Directing. He says in a business the size of Geoffrey T Sowman, the role includes everything from the initial meeting with the family and arranging funerals, directing funerals through to the preparation of the deceased and organising the headstone. “A familiar face makes the process that bit easier for many families and because of this I have formed many strong relationships with families over the years. “Some families I have directed up to four funerals over the years because of this relationship,” he says. In 2013 a management role became available when Barry Hayman left for Ashburton and it was an exciting new step for Lloyd. It’s a role Lloyd has relished since then but as his two young sons Toby and Jasper have grown, he says it’s now time for a change to allow him to be more flexible with family. “Being a funeral director is incredibly rewarding and the people I have met along the way have made the journey very special, but I want to be available to my family more and have more time with my boys.

Lloyd Bush, who has been in the funeral industry for 13 years, is taking on a new challenge with his upholstery business.

“I’ve always had to be available 24/7 and able to meet families after hours, sometimes travel as far as Kaikoura, so family life sometimes had to be put on hold. “I wouldn’t have been able to do it without the support of my wife Ang, but moving ahead we are both looking forward to the flexibility and getting away with the boys,” he says. Lloyd has a few more weeks with Geoffrey T Sowman before he departs but says he will still be available to help out

if needed. His new business adventure, Lloyd Bush Upholstery, will be operated from home to begin with under the watchful eye of Lloyd’s uncle Graham Rogers. Graham is a retired, but well respected upholsterer who has been in the trade for most of his life. “His attention to detail is amazing and he has agreed to train me and pass along the skills he has mastered over the years. “Graham has a very good reputation and

I’m grateful to have him looking over my shoulder,” he says. Already Lloyd has done five jobs and says in time he would love to see the business grow and move into its own premises. “I’m looking forward to it. I’m a real practical person and can sew...anything with a motor I like to operate,” he jokes. Away from work Lloyd says he’s looking forward to getting more use out of the family’s caravan. “Family time is so precious.”

Govt’s housing funding The Salvation Army is to receive more than $1.5 million to fund 884 emergency housing places across the country, including Marlborough, Social Housing Minister Paula Bennett says. She says the Salvation Army has certainty of funding for its existing emergency housing and is also creating 84 new places each year in areas where there are few emergency housing options for people in critical need.”

The funding will be directed towards increasing capacity at the Salvation Army’s large-scale accommodation centres in Auckland and Christchurch, along with emergency housing provision through its Community Ministries. It also allows the Army to extend its emergency housing in Marlborough, Napier, Wellington, and Invercargill.

Cam sings way to success

Christine Chambers is reunited with her son’s stolen medals after former sailor Kelly Kidd started a social media campaign to find their rightful owner.

Stolen medals found in Auckland A Blenheim man whose Afghanistan service medals were stolen when his parents’ house was burgled has been reunited with his medals thanks to a former navy sailor and his wife. The three medals were spotted in a charity shop in Auckland this month by the wife of former Royal New Zealand Navy Able Radar Plotter Kelly Kidd. Kelly says his wife sent him a photo and he saw they were very recent medals. “I thought, ‘why would they be in an op shop?’ So I said, ‘pay for them and bring them home’.” Kelly, who served in the Navy for six years in the 1980s, says he bought them to find their rightful owner. There was a name and service number engraved on the medals, so he went online, asking for help. “It pretty much went nuts from there. Absolutely nuts.” In a matter of hours, he was on the phone to the man the medals were awarded to, former Lance-Corporal Paul Chambers, who had done two tours of Afghanistan and now lives in Blenheim. They had been stolen during a burglary of his parents’ house in Auckland on April 15. “He could not believe they had turned up,” Kelly says. “He was nearly in tears of joy.” He says he did it because of the comradeship among service personnel. “I’m proud to have served my country. It was instilled in me to do this sort of thing. Even if you have left the service, it never

leaves you.” Paul, 28, who served as a signalman, left the army in 2012 and was working in Australia when the burglary happened. Then earlier this month he got a call from a man who had done basic training with him. “Hey bro, are these your medals?” the man asked. “The number is very close to mine.” He went online and discovered messages from his army mates. “Maybe four hours, and I ended up with the name and phone number of Kelly Kidd – the legend who started it all. “He wouldn’t know me from a bar of soap. I’m blown away, and stoked with the response from everybody. It was very cool to see everyone tagging, helping out.” Kelly has delivered the medals back to Paul’s mother in Auckland, Christine, where they will stay for the time being. “This was a part of our son’s life that we were really proud of,” she says. “He was so pleased to serve in Afghanistan – he said, this is why I joined the army, to contribute to something that had a purpose.” She says it was a ‘remarkable effort’ how quickly the medals had been returned. “It just went viral. It just demonstrates that camaraderie in the Defence Force – it never goes.” Kelly has been refunded the cost of the medals by the charity shop manager, although he did not ask for one. “The $75 I paid for them is irrelevant to what they mean to the person who risked their life for their country.”

Cam Dawson, who attends Garin College, was one of two local finalists with Marlborough Boys’ College band Meraki also competing. Cam placed third in the Solo/Duo category, a feat he was thrilled with. “Major congratulations to everyone who competed. It was an awesome time and I loved listening to your music and meeting every one of you,” he said via his Cam Dawson Music Facebook page. “Thanks go to the wonderful Rockquest team, without whom I would never have received the chance to compete and grow musically. “Thanks to my whanau, friends, and fans, both at home and at Manurewa High School; without your support this would mean nothing.

Candidates have their say Blenheim Ward (seven required) This ward is always fiercely contested with a long list of candidates vying for the role as Marlborough District councillor. There will be at least one new

councillor, with the retirement of Jessica Bagge. There are 15 candidates standing for seven positions in the ward. The Sun asked candidates in this

ward - what prompted you to put your name forward and what you want to achieve in council and what skills you think you bring to achieve this?

Voting forms have been posted out all voters, and need to be returned to by noon on October 8. Special votes can be made at the council building in Seymour Street, Blenheim

Jenny Andrews The passion I have for the older members of our community keeps me focused on returning to Council. I want the work to continue that we have begun and consider myself knowledgeable and understanding of that task. Seniors and Baby Boomers I want to lobby for you!

1. Keeping our drinking water safe and secure. 2. Balancing the need of our growing senior population, providing them with the respect, care and confidence they need to ensure a healthy, enjoyable life. Being a progressive go ahead province

which will attract our young to stay or want to return to in the near future. 3. Keeping our essential services such as our hospital, ambulance, education, police, doctors and fire services firmly entrenched in Marlborough,

4. Making sure our core infrastructure is fit for purpose. 5. Encouraging residents young and old to use the Rates rebate scheme and extending our bus service. 6. Engaging as a team offering respect to colleagues and staff.

future. I also understand that central government influences Council decisions with many forms of legislation. I enjoy bringing the community views to the debating table and being involved in decisions that will have a positive impact on our Marlborough community.

I support open communication about council plans and policies by engaging with community and industry at the early stages to have a better buy in of council initiatives. I have actively promoted council annual plans out in the community to gather valuable feedback for decision making and I want to continue this

process. The skills I bring to council include the ability to listen and learn from a wide range of networks, the ability to bring those diverse views into the council debating chamber; and progress plans and policy with those views being taken into account.

Region from the inside. I thought long and hard to rest assure myself that I was standing for the right reasons. I remain satisfied I am. To effect much needed change as is evident by the past seven days of dysfunctionality within the existing council.

A week ago my focus would have been on economic growth, unaffordable rate projections likely to adversely impact the elderly on fixed incomes and those with young families. Growth in terms of businesses expanding or moving here, wealth diversity, job creation, youth retention

Jamie Arbuckle I have put my name forward for the position of Blenheim ward Councillor with the encouragement of my family and friends. Over the past six years on council I have learnt how council operates and have gained a good understanding of the council policies and plans that will influence decision making in the

Peter Chapman I was asked to stand by a number of personal friends and a number of people in the business community and as I could see no way of effecting required changes from the outside, I decided to stand and ‘put my money where my mouth was’ and try to serve the best interests of the Marlborough

Priscilla Cuddon The reason why I put my name forward was because I wish to contribute to a happy, healthy, Marlborough. I bring honesty, compassion, and lateral thinking.

I bring new blood and a fresh perspective to council. I am a team player, and wish to promote balance, efficiency, and common sense decision making.

Brian Dawson I am standing for the Mayoralty and re-election to council as I have the vision and the drive required in these positions. I can commit to the mayoral role full-time and have a proven record of success in this community. I also now have experience of the organisation I now wish to lead. I want to bring a strong council team together that is going to deliver great

results for the community. There is much to achieve. This includes: • Satisfactory drinking water for our smaller communities. • Attracting people to work, live, study and do business in Marlborough. • Helping fulfil the aspirations of our youth. • Making Marlborough the place of choice for young families.

and economic confidence need to be prioritised or fewer and fewer will carry more of an escalating load. This is not sustainable. Given the events of the past seven days, however, I believe one of the urgent priorities will now have to be rebuilding confidence in the community.

The election for Marlborough District Council members is a postal vote and voting forms are out now. If you haven’t received your voting papers, make a special vote at the Marlborough District Council building in Seymour Street, Blenheim during business hours. Votes must be received by Christchurch-based election organisers electionz.com or by the council before 12 noon on Saturday October 8 to be counted.

• Understanding the needs of retirees and that rates must be kept affordable. • Enabling business success. • A thriving central business district. • Appointing councillors to coordinate with key sectors of our community i.e. health and education. • Having accommodation needs as a key focus of Council.

DAWSON

• Better communication with our community through councillors having dedicated geographical areas to service along with the other work they do. The roles I have had in the community through work and on a voluntary basis have given me the skills to lead a time to capitalise of what council does well and implement new initiatives.

Cyril Dawson I am seeking election to council as a grassroots ratepayer, a bit peeved at the spending of ratepayers money by council. After the debacle of the theatre (we were duped) costing $1070 a day to run (and they want more) coupled with

Our water woes (Seddon, Havelock etc) should be a priority as well as housing, and barrier arms at rail crossings in town. I want to try and keep rate bills to an acceptable level by saying NO to anymore big projects that are not needed

at this stage (new $22M library). I bring practicability and commonsense to the table and no convictions. My passions are sport and music. Played heaps of sport over the years. If I get into council, I will be a fulltime councillor.

years and being involved with the different CBD groups over these years I felt it was important that we had some form of representation. I have talked about standing for the last two elections but the time wasn’t

right. I have no personal agendas to achieve, I want to work with fellow councillors on making Marlborough the most desirable place to live, empowering industries to grow creating employ-

ment opportunities, have excellent community facilities, enhance tourist attractions and be an affordable place to live. I am a problem solver who thinks outside the box.

I understand the principles of good governance, budgeting and financial management and how to work with and for people. I want to see Marlborough progress

at an affordable rate. I want to be part of a team that makes considered principled decisions that will benefit all sections of society both now and in the future.

Having been a successful school principal for 37 years I have acquired a wide range of skills to be an effective councillor.

and the global financial crisis effects, which are washing in here too. With my legal technical skills, I plan to enhance fairness, responsible governance with other people’s money,

and due process. I have independence of mind and fearlessness in advocacy. Some things have to be said. What Brexit and Trump are telling us

is the need to include all, not just the entitled or self-entitled few. The heartland of democracy needs to be recognised, thus democracy needs to be seen to be done, like justice.

proven track record on council and in business, am active in the community, and have the capability and commit-

ment to serve Marlborough through open and strong leadership. I’m trusted, confident, proven and

committed. But most importantly – I’m proud to be a Marlburian.

I have had many years’ experience in financial and general governance of companies and organisations of all sizes, national and international. So I am experienced in, understand, and respect the best practice governance principles that are needed to move Marlborough District Council and the people of Marlborough for-

ward. I want to contribute to a council that respects the right of individuals to have a view- even a separate view- but one where all members accept the democratic process and the principle of collective responsibility when debate is done and majority conclusions are reached.

I have the financial skills to see that ratepayers’ dollars are spent wisely. I want to see our precious water, waterways and other natural resources looked after. I also want to see more opportunities for young people developed and a respectful place in this district for our elderly.

to set roots in. I want people to come and stay in Marlborough for more than a wine tasting. I want to make sure that any consents around retirement needs have a focus

on ensuring that they hire qualified staff at a good income. Retirees have worked hard for this community and they deserve to be looked after. I also bring my experience in audit

and financial management to the chamber. I want robust systems in place to prevent some issues that are swirling around the council currently from happening again.

the $5.1M loan to repay is a big burden on all ratepayers, as has been quoted. Add to this the C.B.D. upgrade, the sports hub at Lansdowne Park, the $1M pop up park next to WINZ (losing a lot of car parks), that’s a lot of money going out.

Michael Fitzpatrick The council should be made up of citizens from different sectors in the community and ideally some of the different industries would have some form of representation on the council. Having worked in the CBD for 28

Gary Hildyard I have the time, skills and desire to give to the province I am passionate about. Being recently retired from a career in education I have the time.

Graham Hill I was prompted to stand after advising a councillor, attending meetings, and seeing the level of debate and questioning, as well as my awareness of overseas trends, such as Brexit,

John Leggett I’m a mayoral candidate with professionalism, experience, progressive vision, balance and integrity; I have a

Mark Peters I am at a stage where I have the time to put back into a community that I have lived in all my life, a community that I have always enjoyed being part of. So now I would like to be able to contribute to the good governance and future planning for this community for present and future generations.

Diane Ryan I have never stood for council before and I want to make Marlborough a better place for my grandchildren and my community. I want to make Marlborough a great place to retire to and for young people

Candidates have their say Laressa Shenfield I am re-standing to continue working to enhance the fantastic opportunities that exist here, I love living in Blenheim. Raising two young children with my husband, our family is invested

in Marlborough’s future. • Focus on essential services, support residential development and industry growth. • Build-on what has already been achieved.

• Deliver stronger accountabilities, performance measures and controls around use of ratepayer money. • Provide youth with recreational opportunities and pathways into jobs, training and education.

• I want to keep working closely with the community and support the new Mayor to bring council together. I have proven you can trust in me. I have the values, energy, commitment and capability to represent you.

Our infrastructure services and roading network are things that I have done a substantial work with already, and I would like to have the opportunity to continue with these as I believe the work started will prove to be of great benefit, not only to Marlborough

but the wider South Island. Most importantly I would like to help create a team environment within the elected council that would have the drive, willingness and vision to work as a team for the future of our district. There has to be the ability for

good open honest debate but there is no room for the dirty underhanded politicking. If the decision goes against you, one must suck it up and get on and support the decision, this is the democratic process we operate under.

Terry Sloan I want to continue making this a great province to live, work and play. I would like to see the completion of the sports facility plan. I believe I have the experience and passion to help see this through and help create better facilities.

Alan Straker I have a desire to give something back to a great community that I’m privileged to be part of. I want our council and community to

have a strong connection and for voters to feel confident that they are listened to and that council makes positive decisions for our whole community.

More than 100 people went to the candidates’ meeting in Picton on Monday evening.

Electric cars could be a goer for council By Cathie Bell Electric cars are ‘at the tipping point’ in Marlborough, and Brian Dawson says if he is elected mayor, the Marlborough District Council’s fleet will change over to them. Electric car chargers have already been installed at holiday parks in Blenheim, Havleock, Pelorus Bridge, and Seddon, with other chargers at The Store in Kekerengu and the Rai Valley Tavern. Next year, Charge Net is installing two electric car chargers in Marlborough – one in Blenheim and one in Kekerengu – and it is already installing one in Kaikoura. Yesterday, the Government announced BMW Group New Zealand will partner with Charge Net NZ to help boost the installation of a network of fast-charging electric vehicle stations. More than 100 stations will be installed across New Zealand.

The government has a target of 64,000 EVs on New Zealand roads by 2021. Brian told a well-attended candidates’ meeting in Picton on Monday night that the council could be ‘a real leader’ in adopting electric cars. He says it will ‘surprise no-one’ that eventually solar power and water collection from roofs will be compulsory. Mayoral candidate Colin King says he would like to see Marlborough’s rubbish collected by electric trucks, because he worried the carbon emissions from the trucks collecting recycling could be worse than the rubbish they were recycling. A competition between the three councils at the top of the South Island to reduce carbon emissions would be a good way to encourage improvement, he says. “We could make huge gains by putting ourselves under pressure.”

Story and photo by Celeste Alexander Sheryl Ruffell began her working career as an early childhood teacher but it wasn’t until she invested in a rental property that the idea to pursue real estate was sparked. “The agent I was dealing with suggested that I sell real estate and encouraged me to take the first step. I’m so glad I did,” she says. Fourteen years have since passed and Sheryl knows she made the right decision. “All the people you meet and the different houses you get to see is what makes my job so interesting and enjoyable. Particularly that feeling when you have put in 100 per cent and the client is happy, I get so much satisfaction,” she says. Sheryl first began as a real estate sales consultant for L.J Hooker in 2002 and after three years made the move to Summit Real Estate. Summit had approached Sheryl and invited her to join the team, bringing with her not only knowledge and experience in sales but also marketing. “Summit has a lot to offer. It’s a very generous company and great to work for. The Marlborough team is much like a family and there’s a very strong connection between all of our sales people,” she says.

Supporting Sheryl is her daughter Rowena Tindall who works as her personal assistant. “Rowena is lovely and reliable. We have a very unique relationship being family and it works really well,” Sheryl says. Asked how she measured success Sheryl replies; “Repeat business and happy clients”. “When you’ve helped a client or family into a home and spent a lot of time getting them a good deal, more often than not they come back. “It’s then that I know they were truly happy with the service I provided and I continue to work for them to the absolute best of my ability. “With many people I am helping them out of a situation so I make sure that I give 100 percent,” she says. Sheryl specialises in the wider Marlborough region, from Ward through to Rai Valley. In fact she has a new listing at Pelorus Bridge that will be featuring an open home this weekend. “I make a commitment to all my vendors past and present to do my very best to get results because for me ‘Results Do Matter’. “Honesty, hard work and a good listening ear are all part of the service you get when choosing me to get the job done.”

The winners completed the Queen Charlotte Relay first, winning both line and overall honours, but they fell just short of beating their two hour deadline. The Marlborough Harriers’ 35th running of the Queen Charlotte Relay over five legs of varying distances was held a fortnight ago along Queen Charlotte Drive. The start was at Waitohi Domain in Picton, travelling through Wedge Point (5100 metres), Momorangi (8600 metres) Linkwater (8100 metres), Moenui (6200 metres) ending at Havelock (6650 metres). Harriers’ club secretary Les McKay says conditions this year were the best experienced for a number of years. “There was a little wind and cloudy but with great running temperatures.” He says all grades contested the relay with many keenly contested. “As thought, Athletics Nelson’s senior mens team took out line honours travelling the course in two hours and two seconds. They were striving to break the two hour barrier.” The race was won by Athletics Nelson’s William Wallace (19.18), Kalani Sheridan (29.13), Jared Lautenslager 27.09), Sam Mead (21.25), Max Meffan (22.57). The second team home were the Athletics Nelson’s senior women’s team, Hunter Sutherland (26.23), Beth Versey (33.32), Bridie Edwards (31.28), Charlotte Tucker (28.39), Eloise Beattie (26.13) Total time 2 hours 26 minutes 15 seconds , and third were the Marlborough Harriers’ senior men’s team Stephen Blackwell (19.44) Robbie Barnes (30.06), Cameron Kain (33.12) Dale Smit (25.00), Adam Baker (26.36) Total time 2 hours 14 minutes 38 seconds.

McKenzie’s year off

Dual world champion lightweight double sculler Sophie MacKenzie has decided to take a year away from rowing. She and New Zealand crewmate Julia Edward, from Rotorua, who finished fourth in the A final at the Rio Olympics, were not named as part of Rowing New Zealand’s summer training squad on Monday. Masters rowing success at nationals ‘outstanding’ The Blenheim Rowing Club had a very successful regatta at the New Zealand Masters Rowing Championships, with 22 members competing and winning medals in 30 events. Club members won gold in 11 events, silver in 12, and bronze in nine. Coach Mouse Taylor says the results show the club’s position as one of New Zealand’s top masters clubs over the past four years. He says the results are ‘outstanding’, and he is proud of the rowers for their performances

in what was very trying and rough, difficult conditions and some very competitive events. “All rowers performed exceptionally well over the weekend against some very strong and experienced crews, many exinternationals and Olympians competing this year leading up to the World Masters Games next year, being held in New Zealand.” Standout performances were the duo of Sarah Lissaman and Cynthia de Joux, who contested seven events, winning gold in three,

Rugby ball attracts generous donation Story and photo by Celeste Alexander Think Water Marlborough will be putting smiles on a lot of faces thanks to generosity shown through an in house promotion they ran through winter. Owner Pete James says the company had a Think Water rugby ball signed by the Tasman Makos team and ran an auction for the ball to benefit a local charity.

One customer, who wishes to remain anonymous, made a very generous donation towards the auction, which was then matched by Think Water Marlborough. The charity chosen was Hospice Marlborough who is set to receive around $400. “It was one of our regular pool product customers who recently moved to Marlborough, and when she heard of the promotion she was happy to support it. “We decided to match the amount she donated,” Pete says. Hospice Marlborough fundraising and events co-ordinator Sandy Inwood says the organisation is always grateful and humbled by the support received by individuals and businesses. Think Water Marlborough is a keen supporter of the Makos and a member of the Makos 500 club.” It was Pete’s idea to run the promotion as he had a number of Think Water-branded rugby balls and the team was happy to sign them. A second signed rugby ball was donated to Rapaura School for its fundraising quiz night set for October 15.

silver in two, and bronze in two, Mouse says. The novice (first year rowers) rowers also had a good regatta, he says, getting 10 medals in various events. The New Zealand Masters Rowing Championships were held at Lake Karapiro near Hamilton two weekends ago. Held over two days, there were 443 competitors, including many ex-internationals and Olympians contesting 136 events and 163 races.
