Medal for Tony

Story and photo by Celeste Alexander An emotional presentation was made to local man Tony Cantwell yesterday as he received his New Zealand Long Service and Good Conduct medal at the Marlborough District Council chambers. Tony’s 14 years service to the Marlborough Rural Fire Force was celebrated along with his services to other brigades throughout the region by friends and family who came together for the occasion.

Continued on page 2 Marianne Vertelman pins a New Zealand Long Service and Good Conduct Medal awarded to Tony Cantwell yesterday during a presentation with Mayor Alistair Sowman.

Tony Cantwell presented with medal Continued from page 1 Mayor Alistair Sowman told Tony it was an ‘absolute pleasure’ to present the medal and recognised the ‘hundreds of years of combined fire service’ in the room. “I want to acknowledge the tireless and sometimes thankless job carried out by the fire service and the families who watch their loved ones respond to a call and not know when to expect them home or what they are going into,” he says. Fr iend and for mer Marlborough principal rural fire officer Ross Hamilton also

spoke during the presentation. “Tony was also a good engineer and did an awful lot of work for council that was never recognised. He would fix anything and certainly made his mark. “Tony, you did a hell of a good job so thank you for your service and for your engineering skills, you were certainly a big help to me,” he says. Marianne Vertelman, who has served 11 years in the rural fire force, had the honour of pinning the medal on Tony and thanked him for the knowledge he passed on to her.

Graham Edwards, Ross Hamilton, Chris Walbran, Tony Cantwell, Marianne Vertelman and Mayor Alistair Sowman attended Tony’s New Zealand Long Service and Good Conduct Medal presentation yesterday.

Tony was one of the members of the Blenheim rural fire force that was formally established following the Boxing Day fire

on Wither Hills in 2000. His father Barney Cantwell was also a firefighter and served 46 years.

Tough times for little Hannah By Cathie Bell Hannah, the three year-old daughter of Marlborough Boys’ College assistant principal James Ryan and wife Barbara, has been diagnosed with acute leukemia. She starts her second stage of chemotherapy in Christchurch today, and Barbara says Hannah responded well to the first stage. The family are raising money to help pay for the travel costs and family upheaval as Barbara and Hannah are likely to be in Christchurch for the next six months while James stays in Blenheim working and looking after the couple’s almost five year-old twins, Duncan and Michaela. So far, $6800 has been raised through online fundraiser givealittle. Hannah’s illness and the travel distance between Blenheim

and Christchurch has meant the family has effectively split, Barbara says, with the twins only seeing Hannah once in the past month, as it was ‘too distressing’ for them leaving Hannah and Barbara behind. “They’ve virtually lived like triplets. Now it’s two single families living very different lives.” Barbara says the family and doctors are pleased with how she’s responding to treatment. “We have to be careful, can’t get too excited because things go wrong for no apparent reason. “We’re quietly happy, don’t want to jinx anything. “That’s the scary part – we have no control over the chemotherapy, the body either responds or it doesn’t.” Hannah was diagnosed after she got very pale, started bruis-

ing, and lost all her energy and personality, Barbara says. Wairau Hospital treated her severe anaemia and transferred her to Christchurch for treatment a month ago.

The two have been in Christchurch since then, with Barbara quitting her viticulture studies and taking leave from her job. “It’s all happened very quickly.”

Last candidates’ meeting a lively one By Cathie Bell The last formal candidates’ meeting, held in Havelock, was a lively one as candidates tackled each other over misinformation about the cost of council projects such as libraries. The Havelock Community Association hosted the meeting for Marlborough Sounds ward candidates and mayoral candidates in the Marlborough District Council elections at the Havelock Town Hall on Wednesday evening. The elections are a postal vote, and voting is open until noon on Saturday October 8. The Havelock meeting started quietly with candidates giving a 10 minute introduction speech, and then answering questions from the floor. Mayoral candidates were asked about what they would do to fix the most disappointing thing council has yet to achieve, and John Davis was criticising the cost of the proposed library for Blenheim, saying it was $23million wasted. That prompted John Leggett to interrupt, saying the Blenheim library was not going to cost that, which then sparked Colin King to ask what it would cost. While John Leggett found the figures in the council’s latest Long Term Plan, debate raged about the place of libraries in Marlborough. David Oddie and Trevor Hook defended the $6million cost of the new Picton library, with David saying it plays an important role as a community hub. “We can afford these items. We’re really lucky.” Both emphasised that the money

Health meeting A meeting to discuss the health board’s draft strategy for the next 10 years of primary health care across the top of the South Island is to be held in Blenheim at 5pm on Wednesday at the St John’s Hall in Seymour Street. The strategy is open for public submission through the Nelson Marlborough District Health Board’s website.

for libraries is already budgeted for in the long term plan, which sets out proposed council spending for the next 10 years. The funding for water upgrades in Havelock, Seddon, and Renwick is also allocated and those projects are scheduled to go ahead before the proposed Blenheim library. John Leggett says Marlborough is in a very fortunate position having revenue streams outside rates, with money coming from the council-owned port company, airport, property, and forestry, he says. He showed the meeting the figures in the plan which has the Blenheim library at $14m and the Picton library at $6m, with the riverside park next to the proposed library at $2m. “To say it’s $23m for a new

library is completely wrong.” Colin, Brian Dawson, and Nadine Taylor all said the community will was for the big infrastructure projects to be done first. Pat O’Sullivan says a new Blenheim library wouldn’t need more space if the free wifi was switched off as it is used by visitors. The noise from visitors using wifi puts off older people from using the library, he says. John Leggett questioned why visitors shouldn’t be able to use wifi, while they worked in Marlborough and spent money in shops here, and Steve pointed out the wifi was provided by central government, not the council. Laurence Etheredge says libraries are an expression of civilisation.

“A really nice library says something about what is important to us, that we value what’s in there.” “While we’re all going hell for leather into social media and the digital world, it would be a big mistake to leave libraries behind,” he says. Colin started his speech with an acknowledgement he had made a mistake about the costs of a show at the ASB Theatre earlier in the week. “It was not Oliver, it was Grease that is $100 a ticket. “The required support is going to the theatre at a cost to those that don’t go for those that do go.” He says people don’t want any money going into projects like the new theatre before the district is up to date with all its large infrastructure projects.

Oliver is not a Blenheim Musical Theatre production, as stated in Wednesday’s paper. It’s a Marlborough Civic Theatre Trust and Marlborough Youth Theatre in association with Blenheim Musical Theatre production. Also, Sarah Foster was incorrectly named in an Out and About caption. We apologise for the errors.

Tattoo artist returns home, opens studio

Bank drops business awards

Story and photo by Celeste Alexander At the age of seven Adele Harris told her parents she would one day be a tattoo artist. She says at the time her family thought it was just a ‘phase’, but sure enough she has stuck to her goal and recently opened her own tattoo studio. Del’s Neo-Geo Tattoo Studio is located on her family property near Spring Creek in a building she refurbished. She says after living and working in Christchurch to do her tattooing apprenticeship, she knew she wanted to return home to Marlborough. “I worked my butt off and saved up so I could set up my studio and now it’s happened it feels surreal. “It’s been awesome and already surpassed what I was hoping for. I wasn’t expecting to be working full time already but everyone has been really supportive.

“I believe that if you work hard and push yourself enough that good things come to you, so I’m really excited to see where the business goes,” she says. During her apprenticeship Adele tattooed a huge variety of designs but she has adopted what she calls a ‘neo-geo’ style which features prominently in a lot of her work. “It’s a mixture of neo-traditional and geometric styles with fine lines being my favourite. The biggest thing is that I try to educate people on size and shapes to fit the body and to design something that suits them, rather than just finding something on Google. “It’s very satisfying to draw up unique designs for people and what I enjoy most is that I’m doing something different everyday. This is why I love what I do,” she says.

Growing membership key By Cathie Bell Growing an engaged membership steadily is the aim for the Marlborough Chamber of Commerce general manager Stephen Gullery. Chamber president Nita van Grinsven told the chamber’s annual general meeting on Wednesday the chamber had 420 members and is focussed on growing that. Picton businessman John Reuhman queried that, saying it had been more than 500 two years ago and asking why there had been such a ‘huge drop’. Stephen says membership drives previously had created spikes in numbers, but members had not been ‘engaged’. Since coming on board as

Big Norm’s Totara planted at Victoria Domain The Guardians of the Sounds has a special tree planting project underway, working with the Council and community members to restore tōtara trees to Tōtaranui/Queen Charlotte Sound. The project kicked off with the planting of a tōtara at the Norman Kirk memorial plaque at Victoria Domain in Picton with students from Queen Charlotte College and Bohally Intermediate. Prime Minister Norman Kirk – ‘Big Norm’ - died in office in 1974, after a term of advocacy for better race relations and opposition to French nuclear testing in the Pacific. His government reformed Maori land law and set up the Waitangi Tribunal and, at his death, the tōtara was referenced: “Kua hinga te tōtara i te wao nui a Tane” - a mighty Totara in Tane’s forest has fallen. “Big Norm’s” tōtara was one of 150 trees of 10 native forest species planted in Victoria Domain earlier this month. Update on the Lansdowne Sports Hub Planning and design work is moving along steadily for the expanded use of Lansdowne Park. This multi-stage redevelopment will be one of this district’s biggest investments in sports amenities, with new facilities for existing codes and the new sports which will be moving to Marlborough’s premier sports park. Car parking, new playing surfaces, sports facilities and a new Sports Hub building will be built over the next three to five years. But there will be major disruptions to contend with while all the work is done and we’re asking everyone to be patient about the inconvenience.

Naval revue The Marlborough District Council has joined forces with the Royal NZ Navy to help the Marlborough community to be part of the celebration of the Navy’s 75th Anniversary. Part of the Navy programme of events includes the country-wide Navy Players Theatre Tour. The touring comedy show promises ‘songs, satire and silliness’ in a performance entitled “The Complete History of the Royal New Zealand Navy” written and directed by the

The existing gravel car park will be sealed and line marked to hold more vehicles as well as a drop-off lane and a separate drop-off lane for buses. The deteriorating Jim Fraser Centre will be demolished. A contract has been let for the design work involved in establishing netball courts, installing a storm water drainage system and sealing the car park, an ambitious programme to have all the work in this stage of the project completed by next year’s netball season. The new Sports Hub building will be the next stage of the development. Until that’s ready, for the first netball

season at Lansdowne Park in 2017 netball will use existing changing rooms in the grandstand and temporary office accommodation in the Jim Fraser building. At the same time, we’re working with an electrical engineering firm to move lighting between fields for rugby training. Please fix the holes Marlborough Roads going to repair the pot holes in Grove Rd anytime soon? Will need a wheel alignment shortly. Saw a sparrow poke its head out recently....

Nuisance cats...

Black market?

I agree cats need to he confined..if you are responsible owners keep them off other’s property. They poop all through our vegie garden and last week got in my car and peed. Have you ever heard of TOXOPLASMOSIS..? Cats are disease carriers...keep your cat on your property or suffer the consequences. Think of people who do not have or want cats.. Keep them confined.

Does anyone else think there is a black market operating for stolen expensive new age hearing aids?

I’ve had my own that I adored.... I can say too, and the strong word ‘hate’ applies...other peoples cats pooing on our lawn, sometimes is much like clearing dog poo, in our flowerbed and in the pram I like to leave outside. They are a total pain and pest. How could anyone be so heartless as to cause so much distress and sorrow to the elderly residents of the Redwood Retirement Village by taking their much loved tortoise shell cat? To all you cat lovers, owners; your lovable moggy will kill birds, rabbits, rats, mice, pet guinea pigs, anything that a cat eats. They also poo in gardens, flowerbeds etc.. anyone’s garden...it’s horrible to clean their mess up next to my veges... I have to cage my garden off to stop a wandering pet from doing their business in my vege patch? Wake up you lot and figure why your furry purrer never walks back into your house... Game over. I am appalled and disgusted at the writer “are you insane” Friday 23rd paper about seeing a shrink (re cats). I also have Ailurophobia (fear of cats) and have never had to see a shrink. Are you saying everyone with a phobia needs to see a shrink? Ailurophobia is real. I would never hurt a cat or touch one, but owners need to be more responsible. With a remark like you made maybe you need a shrink!! Disgusted.

No experience I am fed up too. I did training etc. only to find that you now need so many years experience. How is that possible if no one gives you a chance? I would like a decent job but end up doing low paid work. No experience. Feel for texter 23/9, but it gets better as you experience life! Replies go - ‘Too old, too experienced, or too over qualified, or think you will find the job boring, or we don’t think we can pay what you expect.’ But the classic is - “Oh, you are not from Blenheim”. Just keep trying as they all say. To the lady showing her concerns about the lack of work for the not lazy. Does your daughter have an interest in wine making or viticulture? Bring back Four I have been extremely disappointed by the new tv channel Bravo, which replaced Four a few months ago. On Four there used to be a great variety of different programs eg comedy, sitcom, drama, but now the large majority are reality tv shows, and the only variety left is the place that the real housewives come from. Who wants to hear a bunch of snobby rich white women b****ing at each other? Bring back Four! Speckled Jim

Keep up the good work Well done Sophie Boyce for realising your dream of becoming a chef! The world is your oyster!

Upgrade needed I’m a bit confused by ‘Upgrade needed’ comments on the facilities needed to keep young people here. Book shops? Record shops? Seriously? They do everything online now! Lots of the bars here have live music. Can’t honestly say I think galleries will keep them here though; maybe that’s on your wish list. What will keep our youth here is good jobs with good money and a good career path and access to opportunities for training and study here in their own home town. Some will go and come back and some will go for good. It’s just the way of the world.

5 MINUTES WITH: Lee Davis Clubs Marlborough CEO

Q A Q A Q A

What meal do you never get sick of eating? Marlborough seafood apart from kina. One of my best holidays was... Three weeks touring the South Island with my family with the highlight being three days on Stewart Island. My guilty TV pleasure is... Really don’t have one but David Attenborough still keeps me interested and I will always watch the All Blacks.

Q A Q A Q A

I’m inspired by... Vibrant positive people, particularly those that are self-made and of course my wife. How do you want to be remembered? As a good leader and a fair boss. Who would you love to have a meal with? David Gilmour, Roger Waters, Nick Mason and Rick Wright.

Q A Q A Q A

What’s your fondest childhood memory? Not having a TV, Xbox or a cell phone, having to enjoy the great outdoors. What is the one thing Sun readers would be surprised to know about you? I was dropped off on the top of Mount Hikurangi by helicopter at 4.30am so that I would be the first person in the world to see the sun rise. What’s next on your wishlist? Lose some weight, grow back some hair and pay off the Clubs’ mortgage.

GARDENING

THIS WEEK WITH WALLY RICHARDS

Planting seedlings in Spring

Connie Coldwell savours a toffee apple at last year’s Springlands School Gala.

Gala to reach new heights The Springlands School Gala is scaling new heights, with an eight metre climbing wall coming from Nelson for the event next weekend. Organising committee co-chair Paula Olliver says the four faced climbing wall is just one of the activities on offer on October 15. “Because it’s a gala, we know the kids are eating the odd sweet treat, so we want to have plenty of fun ways to keep them active throughout the day. It’s like a toffee apple, with a bit that’s bad for you wrapped around a lot that’s good for you.” She says the gala is moving steadily towards healthier options, and last year’s event saw fizzy drinks banned for the first time. Each year kids donate mystery bottles for the fundraising event, and last year donations dropped off as families struggled to think of

anything to replace the bottles of fizz they normally bring in, she says. “But this year we reinvented it a little, and there are some really exciting things in there, from toys tucked in bottles, to bubble bath.” She says the event is a key fundraiser for the school, an opportunity for kids to come out and do some fun stuff - including face painting, pony rides, treasure digs and jousting - and for the kapa haka, choir and jump jam groups to perform for the crowds. It was also an opportunity for students and parents to see the huge community support for the school. “What has come out loud and clear is it’s a community event and attracts not just the school, but the Springlands community and the wider Marlborough community. It’s really great for the kids to see that.”

Gardeners have a choice to either grow their vegetable and flower plants from seed or purchase seedlings. Growing from seed is the most cost effective but there are a few snags in doing so for the beginner. I have recently had a few phone calls and emails from gardeners complaining that their efforts in germinating seeds are not producing strong healthy plants. In all these cases the reason was light and the lack of it. When a seed germinates, it sends up a pair of embryo leaves on a stalk while underneath the tap root races downwards forming rootlets as it goes. Many gardeners including myself like to germinate seeds indoors. When the seed sprouts and the first foliage emerges, the leaves will detect any light source and grow towards that source. On a window sill the light is coming through the window; I call this sideways light, it is not directly overhead. Thus during the day the seedling will stretch to the glass of the window making for a weak plant, which is likely to die. At night time, the seedling would normally stop growing as there is no light but being indoors you may have the lights on so now the plant detects light coming from a light bulb and starts growing in that direction. If in a hot water cupboard and if totally dark, the seeds will germinate, throw up the embryo leaves and then they will turn yellow due to lack of light. If there is the faintest bit of light from a gap in the door, then they will quickly stretch to that light and fail. The secret when germinating indoors is as soon as you have a show of sprouts, move the seed tray out into a glasshouse or similar. When done correctly with good overhead light, the stalk of the plant will

slowly grow upwards, producing more leaves on its travel, making for a strong seedling ready to harden off before planting out. You can harden the plants off by putting them out in a semi sheltered spot for a day or two, then in the open for another couple of days before transplanting, or harden up seedlings quickly by spraying their foliage all over, in full sun, with Vaporgard a day before transplanting. Seedlings in punnets or cell packs that you have grown or purchased should be allowed to dry a little between waterings but not allowed to dry too much to cause stress. To further give your seedlings a better start, place in the planting hole some Rok Solid, Neem Powder, sheep manure pellets and/or blood & bone. If you have Gypsum a little of that also. A light watering with water to settle in and any transplanting should be done late afternoon, not in the heat of the full sun. Keep the seedlings’ growing medium or soil adequately watered by hand watering every day when there is no rain.

Medical pilot navigates towards Blenheim By Celeste Alexander The charismatic Dr Dave Baldwin is coming to Blenheim next month to help turn all our men folk into ‘Healthy Bastards’, Cancer Society Marlborough health promoter Anna Small says. Those who do not know about Dave are in for a treat, she adds. A former Marlborough Boys’ College student, pilot and doctor, Dave has been taking his Healthy Bastards campaign on the road for 20 years now, spreading basic health messages to men in a non political yet humorous way. He is a one-man band who likes to use ‘common man’s language’ to keep his audience engaged. “I give it straight and in a way they can understand it. I have got good at talking to blokes, I did my apprenticeship talking to men in prisons and one thing I learned is that if you go off track or start boring men, you lose them,” he says. Dave says his talks are based on a number of health issues. “I include general health messages while focusing on a couple of areas. Men always like to know how their willies work and tend to ask questions about cancer, so I will make it as informative as I can. “It’s all about early detection which is why it’s great to be invited to Blenheim by the Cancer Society. What’s also cool about Blenheim is that I’m part of the furniture and visit Omaka to examine pilots. I’m also the main sponsor of the Healthy

Bastards Bush Pilots event, so I thought it would be good to come and do a talk,” he says. Another area Dave aims to push is his online medical text book he created for men. “Often men are on their phones or computers so it’s easy for them to go to the website where there’s over 100 video clips. If they have questions about itchy bums or heart problems, there’s information available. “It may save an unnecessary visit to the doctor. Have toe jam? That’s cool, visit the website and read that you can go to the pharmacy and

grab some antifungal cream,” he says. Although the campaign is targeted at men, Dave does not exclude women from attending. “Quite often women come along with their men in tow, or they go out and buy my books as gifts so I always welcome them,” he says. Dave will be in Blenheim on Tuesday, October 11 talking to men at the Jim Fraser Room at Lansdowne Park from 6.30pm. Entry is free and light refreshments will be available. By Cathie Bell The ultimate sacrifice of police officers who were killed in the line of duty has been remembered at a special service yesterday. Police staff, Marlborough mayor Alistair Sowman, and Marlborough Returned Service Association members gathered in the RSA lounge at the Clubs of Marlborough for the service, held on St Michael’s Day, the patron saint of police. Marlborough area commander Inspector Simon Feltham says policing can be dangerous, as shown by those who have made the ultimate sacrifice. He has confidence in the men and women serving Marlborough, but they must remain vigilant. He also says the police must retain the confidence and support of the public to be able to do their work. “We welcome public scrutiny as it is a sign people still see the police as relevant and important in their daily lives.” Marlborough RSA president Ross Cook says the police are an important part of the association.

obituary Kenneth Lindsay Rigby September 29 1942 - August 17 2016 Former Marlborough Police Sergeant Ken Rigby was farewelled at Holy Trinity Church in Picton on Wednesday August 24. Movingly, his first police helmet from 1966 adorned his casket. Representatives of the police and the many groups he had been involved with came to pay tribute to his life and community service. Before Ken and his family came to Picton, he served in Wellington then Masterton, at the time an exceptionally tough area. He was hospitalised four times after serious attacks, once in Wellington and three times in Masterton, including a gang assault where he was beaten with chains. Undeterred by his career risks he moved to Pahiatua, another difficult posting with a very high level of fatal crashes. One year there were eighteen fatalities, including six teenagers in one crash, with two of the victims very well known to him. Ken took charge of the Picton police station in 1986 where he developed a great record of community service, including six years as board chair at Queen Charlotte College. He set up Blue Light for Picton’s youth and undertook fund-raising for the rescue Naiad that preceded the local Coastguard. Ken was always heavily involved in search and rescue operations, including the Wahine disaster. There were also days in a snow cave on Ruapehu when a search and rescue

exercise went very wrong. His wife Yvonne gave birth to their son Chris just after that anxious time. He was also an original crew member in Peter Button’s many rescues in the first Westpac rescue helicopter. Ken’s commitment to physical fitness saw him involved in many police and community games events, and representing New Zealand as a long distance runner at the World Police Games in Austin Texas in 1982. His final posting was as Recruiting Sergeant in the Blenheim office, retiring in 1997. Ken is survived by his wife Yvonne, his son Chris and twin daughters Fiona and Vanessa.

The Shield needs to go back to go forward The Ranfurly Shield could do with a makeover. I watched Wednesday night’s rugby game where Canterbury beat Waikato to lift the Shield but it didn’t look like many in Hamilton seemed to notice the game was even on. I’m sure it was much the same in Christchurch. Unless you’re a die hard Mooloo or Canterbury fan, it probably doesn’t mean much. Gone are epic games of the past, defences of the Shield played in blazing sunshine in front of a packed stadium. Now, it’s at night, on a Wednes-

day. The crowd in Hamilton was sparse and the atmosphere largely lacking. Yes, it was the middle of the working week but it was two powerhouse provinces, with excellent Ranfurly Shield legacies. The best move for the Shield would be for a Heartland Championship union to win it. Imagine what it would do to a place like Wanganui, Mid Canterbury or Buller. It would draw massive crowds and plenty of historical anecdotes from the amateur era. It might be a pipe dream but it’s

hard to argue that the Ranfurly Shield meant the most to people and players prior to the professional era in 1995. The national provincial competition serves its purpose well, generating New Zealand’s next crop of talented players ready for Super Rugby level. Why not have the Log o’ Wood be the symbol of grassroots provincial pride once again? It would be best for the Shield, best for the game and best for those supporters in the smaller sub-unions.
