Leggett wins mayoralty in landslide result Continued from page 1 Final results will be issued this afternoon, but preliminary results show John was elected with 9213 votes, ahead of Colin with 4836, Brian with 3252, and John Davis with 1713. There were 295 blank voting documents received, and 19 informal ones. John Leggett says he is ‘going to make sure’ the new council gets off to a positive start. “There is plenty of buy-in to that idea.” The ‘dust’ of the election campaign is settling pretty quick, he says, and now the council needs to get on with it. “Quality work is the name of the game.”

The first full council meeting of the new team is on October 27. Councillors will get together informally before then, and they will have a fieldtrip to some council facilities, John says. “We’ll have a get-together, that could be useful, talk about a few things we need to deal with fairly soon, get a good understanding about what we hope to achieve, particularly around the obligations of councillors.” He says he wants to be ‘forward-looking’, and has no plans to re-visit issues that ‘have popped up between us in the past’. The secret recording of a public-excluded committee

meeting and the passing of that recording onto a controversial blog ‘has been dealt with’, he says. “We’ve got to take that onboard and get on.” District secretary Tony Quirk confirmed on Friday that an inquiry by the council has not established who is responsible for the secret recording. All staff involved and all but two councillors have signed Statutory Declarations of non-involvement, and have done so voluntarily, he says. This ‘leaves uncertainty about where responsibility rests for the breaches that have occurred’, Tony says. “At this time no further enquiry is proposed unless

Gerald Hope: Gerald is really looking to engage with small communities in the Wairau Awatere ward. “That’s a high priority, I want to get a feel for them, review their priorities, and help support them to achieve their goals.” Gerald has been re-elected to the Nelson Marlborough District Health Board as well, along with three other Marlburians.

Mark Peters: Mark says he is very pleased to be elected and looking forward to all it brings. “I’m sure I’ll enjoy it.” He also feels it is a very good council. “I’m pretty positive that we’ve got a very good council. My focus is financial governance, that’s what I’ll be concentrating on to the best of my ability.”

more information comes to light.” At John Leggett’s election party on Saturday, retiring mayor Alistair Sowman spoke, saying all councillors seeking re-election have been successful, which he says is an indication the council was heading in the right direction. “You hear about the call for change, but voters didn’t respond and I think John’s got a very strong mandate now to continue the current policies of council,” Alistair says. “Johnny said ‘I’m not going to be you’ and I totally agree with that, he needs to stamp his own mark on this province and I’m excited because I think we’ve got the best guy to lead Marlborough forward.”

Michael Fitzpatrick: Michael plans to ‘take it quietly and see how it works before I start throwing my two cents in’. “You have got to get in there and get an understanding of how the system works and how you can influence it.” He says it is a ‘very good’ council, with ‘some good experience there and some good new blood’. “I can’t wait to get into it.”

Nadine Taylor: Nadine is ‘absolutely stoked’ with the result, as the highest polling candidate in the ward. She is working to ‘get her bearings’ with the work to be done. “A big thing for me to make sure I get the avenues of communication set up right back into the community so I can represent them properly.”

Retiring Marlborough Sounds ward councillor Graeme Barsanti shows just how big the sculpture is. Photo provided.

After 16 years of planning and a huge fundraising effort by the small community at French Pass, a life-size bronze sculpture of dolphin Pelorus Jack was unveiled at the village lookout. In his final duty as Marlborough Sounds ward councillor, Graeme Barsanti lifted off the cover to reveal Pelorus Jack, a Risso’s dolphin that greeted passengers on boats travelling between Wellington and Nelson from 1888 until 1912. He became known around the world, with people booking a passage just to see him. This rare white dolphin attracted a crowd again on Saturday, with about 80 people there for the unveiling. Graeme paid tribute to local

tourism operator and environmentalist Danny Boulton who started the project back in 2000 after getting a request from a Texas primary school teacher for information about Pelorus Jack. “Danny said we have this world famous dolphin and there’s nothing here to show for it. So he set about doing something about that.” Danny was a longtime French Pass resident. Laurence Etheredge, chairman of the French Pass Residents Association, says rising prices for bronze meant the project always crept out of reach until the Marlborough District Council and Lottery Grants came on board. A magazine article sent to Laurence by a friend led him to Dunedin sculptor Bryn Jones,

who was commissioned to capture Pelorus Jack in bronze. The sculpture was cast in 14 sections that were then welded together and finished. TNL has provided free transport for the sculpture and mounting plinth from Dunedin to French Pass. “We have many people to thank, including TNL who transported Pelorus Jack and the base plinth all the way here,” Laurence says. “But it was Danny Boulton who had the idea and his dogged determination kept this project going.” Stories and songs about Pelorus Jack were shared by Ngati Koata and French Pass residents before Pelorus Jack was unveiled at Collinet Point, just above the French Pass settlement and Graeme was the first to have a ride.

Pelorus Jack, or Kaikaiawaro, was a Risso’s dolphin that escorted ships sailing across Admiralty Bay on their regular route between Wellington and Nelson in the early years of the 20th century. In 1904, he was protected by the New Zealand government through an Order in Council after a passenger on the SS Penguin tried to shoot him. The dolphin was found dead in 1912, washed up with a bullet wound. It is thought it was shot by someone who mistook it for a shark. French Pass is a small settlement in the outer Marlborough Sounds, and is named after the turbulent tidal stream that races through the pass between the mainland and D’Urville Island.

Sowman to lead Marlborough Primary Health board Outgoing Marlborough Mayor Alistair Sowman has been appointed chairman of the Marlborough Primary Health board. A board member for six years and deputy chair for the past three, Alistair’s nomination for the chair was confirmed at a board meeting on Thursday, October 6. He replaces former chair David Taylor. Three new board members

were also elected are Tarina MacDonald, Nita van Grinsven and Peter Tolan. Alistair says he was excited to step up to lead the board at a time when health leaders were asking the public for feedback on their plans for meeting current and future challenges. The Primary and Community Draft Strategy, which is now out for discussion and the subject of public meet-

ings, outlines the direction for primary and community health across the Top of the South Island over the next five to 10 years. “Our challenge is how to make health care more affordable, more accessible and targeted at people’s health needs. I’m looking forward to this role,” he says. “It’s been 12 years full-on at council, but I think my governance skills and my

knowledge of our public out there will hopefully be suited to the role of chairman of the primary health board. “I’m very lucky to have a very skilled board and an extremely experienced chief executive officer, Beth Tester. Beth runs the team and our job is to make sure the systems are in place for that to happen.” Alistair also chairs the

local Children’s Action plan, a Government initiative to provide services for at-risk children. The project has been running for two years and is currently working with 130 families in Marlborough. He has also recently been appointed chairman of the board of Community Law Marlborough. Marlborough Primary Health chief executive officer Beth Tester says it was

New WW2 exhibition opens soon One-month and five days shy of the Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre’s 10-year anniversary, the museum’s second exhibition, Dangerous Skies will open to the public. Featur ing stor ies of aviators and aircraft from World War II the exhibition will take visitors on a historical as well as a geographical journey. A production team made up of paid professionals and passionate volunteers, have worked tirelessly over the last eighteen months to bring these stories to life. Jane Orphan, Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre director says; “We have

some remarkable aviation stories to tell from WW2. Some will be familiar, such as the Battle of Britain, but we are also introducing lesser known stories (in the West) from the Eastern Front and Burma. The aircraft we have for display take the lead but the stories provide the context.” The exhibition will include a mixture of original and replica machines, one of these being the world’s only flyable Avro Anson Mk1 and a Griffon powered Mk.XIVe Spitfire. Once again mannequins from cinematic master craftsmen Weta Workshop will enhance scenes pains-

takingly created by talented local artists. The opening of Dangerous Skies signifies the completion of Stage Two of a multi-stage development and is the result of years of fundraising and planning. This is a joint venture between the Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre and the Ministry of Business Innovation and Employment (MBIE). The support of the Rata Foundation, Marlborough District Council, Marlborough business community and dedicated volunteers have been integral to the success of the project, Jane says.

great that Alistair’s wealth of experience, knowledge of the issues and his community network would still be used in Marlborough. “It’s good that someone with such good contacts will be leading and helping the community to move forward - especially in the health area where we know there are challenges at this moment in time.”

SLOOOW Computer!!!

Are you for ever waiting for things to happen? Yes, computers do slow down over time, this is quite natural and the good news is that it can be remedied. Just like a car computers need a certain amount of maintenance which if not done will lead to “slooow computer” syndrome. If you have recently had ultrafast broadband installed and things aren’t happening as fast as you think they should let us give your computer a good service and clean out, even if you are still on ordinary broadband your computer will thank you for it.

Dear Ed, Evan Robinson (Sun October 5) has completely missed the point regarding secret meetings and the democratic election process. I don’t vote in people I trust and then go ‘righto, I can go to sleep now’. I vote for people with the skills I think the Council needs AND I expect them to follow the law - namely that Public Excluded Meetings are held only when legally required and not as a way to dodge the public’s knowledge and that all meetings have minutes recorded. I do not expect meetings to continue after the Council meeting has ended and minute takers have left and I am concerned at the very thought that those ‘off the record’ meetings might make decisions the Council might then ratify. No one should ever vote someone in to a position of power - no matter how big or small - and then blindly follow them. That is an incredibly stupid thing to do. Leigh Maddison Blenheim

People key to military career Air Commodore Darryn Webb was the key speaker at this year’s Battle of Britain commemoration. He tells Cathie Bell about how growing up at Woodbourne made him want to join the airforce. Speaking at military service commemorations in Marlborough is a pleasure, not a chore, for New Zealand Defence Force air component commander Air Commodore Darryn Webb. The Marlborough Boys’ College old boy has been part of the airforce for 26 years, saying he joined straight out of school from Marlborough Boys’ College. It’s been hugely rewarding ever since, he says. “I’m pretty privileged to do that. I make a point of trying to get across for these services when I can. “When I’m given the opportunity to come, I can’t wait. It’s great.” Darryn says he made his mind up when he was 10 years old about his career. “I loved aeroplanes and was going to join the air force.” The influences were pretty strong – his father, Dale, was in the air force “first and foremost” and his grandparents were best friends with Lorna and ‘Bunty’ Bunt, who had served in the Royal Air Force during World War II. The 96 year-old veteran who flew Spitfires and Hurricanes during the war was at the Battle of Britain commemoration service this year and enjoyed catching up with his friend’s grandson and comparing military stories. Darryn says it is ‘really great’ to see Mr Bunt ‘so well’. “He’s absolutely razor sharp.” Most of Darryn’s air force career has been with 40 Squadron, the Hercules transport aircraft squadron. He says they are fantastic planes. “They’re older than anyone who flies them these days… I’m looking forward to seeing what comes next.” The good thing about 40 Squadron is that ‘you’re usually the first ones there’, he says, as they deliver the troops or equipment to places the Defence Force goes. During his career, Darryn’s been to Afghanistan, Iraq, all around the South Pacific, Bougainville, East Timor, and Somalia.

He was the Detachment Commander for the RNZAF support to the 2004 Boxing Day Tsunami relief effort in Indonesia and Deputy Mission Commander for Exercise Pacific Partnership aboard USS Pearl Harbor in 2013. He also had a three-year exchange, flying Hercules for the Australian airforce with No. 37 Squadron, RAAF Base Richmond. Following promotion to his current rank, Air Commodore Webb was appointed the Deputy Chief of Air Force in January 2016 and most recently, in April 2016, the Air Component Commander at Headquarters Joint Forces New Zealand. Many military people leave after completing 20 years’ service, but Darryn is still in and enjoying it. “People ask what keeps me in. A lot of friends have left to join airlines, but it’s the

people that keep you in. “Every day you do a job you love, you keep doing it. It’s pretty much as simple as that.” Looking around at the young air force staff helping out at the Battle of Britain commemoration service, Darryn says he finds it ‘really

satisfying to see the next generation joining, seeing them start their careers’. “I love being around the whole air force family as it is. “It really does feel like I joined just five minutes ago.”

The BIG sing in The Forum on Friday. Some of the 400 Barbershop contestants entertaining the crowd.

A Better World - singing By John Denton The National Barbershopsinging Convention was held in Blenheim last weekend, a first for Marlborough. The new Blenheim ASB Theatre proved one of the best acoustic auditoria in the country. Over 400 contestants and partners from around New Zealand and judges from overseas, the Marlborough Sounds Barbershop Chorus led by Johan DuPlessis and assisted by a host of local volunteers put together a truly world-class event. ‘Vocal FX’, a group of young Wellington singers that placed sixth in this year’s International Contest in Nashville, USA, maintained their unassailable

lead by winning the Chorus Contest. ‘The Vocal Network’ from Christchurch took the Quartet trophy. The spirit of Marlborough shone through - as did the weather. Local businesses supported the event, as did the people of the region who bought every seat in the house on Saturday night. The show included all contest winners and the headline act, 2016 world-champion a-cappella quartet ‘Forefront’ from the USA. Everyone present left feeling it was ‘A Better World. Singing’, the goal of Barbershop singers world-wide.

Long time organiser Nicki Stace says that this year’s gardens are some of the most distinctive she has ever seen. “It’s early spring so there are not as many brilliant colours as you see a little later, but the gardens this year are delightfully country style with lots of early bloom and natives featuring.” One of these gardens is that of Waihopai Valley couple Colette and Brendan Ryan. They first started planting in 1980 when their garden featured one pine tree. Colette says she started out with a basic landscape plan which she developed over time. “It was a case of finding what would grow here as we have severe

frosts in winter and dry conditions in summer. Their house is perched on a small rise overlooking vineyards and ranges so Colette created a garden sloping down a bank in the early 90’s. Throughout the garden are various sculptures, water features and rustic art as well as a wandering path that takes you down the bank. An old corrugated fence still remains which now holds a number of art pieces, and adjacent is an opening in line of pine trees that peaks through to the neighbouring vineyard. The tours are self-driven allowing participants to visit the gardens at their own pace, enjoying tea and scones or a sausage sizzle at selected gardens on the way. Tickets are available from Roselands, Selmes Nursery, Devon Nursery, Islington Garden Centre and the Renwick Dairy and cost $20 each, children are free.

Weir Broadbridge, owner of Broadbridge Transport has taken a step back from the 70 year old family business with son Adam and daughter Rachel who are now learning to take the reins. Weir’s parents Cyril and Hazel started Broadbridge Transport with one truck in 1946, which saw Weir and his brothers all work there at some point. After Cyril’s passing, his sons took over and today Weir is the sole owner. What makes this year special for the family is that the company is celebrating 70 years in business and its third generation moving up into management.

In the office Rachel takes care of the administration as well as learning to drive the trucks, while Adam is out carting livestock. To celebrate the 70th anniversary Broadbridge Transport purchased a new truck in August for one of their drivers. “This gives us a total of 5 trucks with our oldest in the fleet being only seven years old. Patience please for heavy vehicles Marlborough roads are unique in terms of heavy vehicle traffic, with general freight volumes added to during the grape harvest each year. Senior constable Paul McKenzie, of the South Island Commercial Vehicle Investigation Unit says the annual grape harvest sees an increase in heavy vehicle traffic on the roads, with trucks, harvesters and gondolas added to freight trucks already passing

through the region. “Marlborough obviously is unique during harvest time; that causes work in that you have got a lot of grapes being harvested, [and] taken to processing plants,” McKenzie says. The harvest also brought with it grape spills, and there was a consistent risk of heavy motor vehicle roll-over and driver fatigue among heavy vehicle drivers.

“We are trying to keep everyone happy, and trying to eliminate or reduce the amount of spills on roadways during harvest,” McKenzie says. Police were also consistently monitoring driver log books, vehicle fitness, and overweight vehicles to try and reduce the risk of crashes, he says. “With the ferries we have obviously got a lot of freight moving up and down the

country, and that takes all forms, be it general freight, stock, logs, what have you” “Driving a truck and trailer unit is a lot different than driving a car, especially when it comes to bends.” In order to reduce the risk of crashes on Marlborough roads, it was important that the general public exercised patience when it came to heavy vehicles, McKenzie says.

Young driver scholarship New Zealand’s world rally star Hayden Paddon has joined forces with Hyundai New Zealand to give a young Kiwi rally driver a major step-up with their rally career aspirations. Paddon and Hyundai New Zealand have collaborated to create the Hyundai NZ Young Driver Shootout and Scholarship with an impressive prize for the winner – the opportunity to drive the Hyundai NZ AP4 i20 rally car in two rounds of the 2017 New Zealand Rally Championship being operated and run by Paddon Rallysport, testing and training with Paddon, plus the potential for an expanded programme in 2018. Applications are now open and can be found at http://pinnacleprogramme.co.nz. Follow the instructions online and submit your application and details as prompted. Applications close 19 October.

Hayden Paddon and John Kennard.

Open to drivers aged 16-25, applicants for the Hyundai NZ Young Driver Shootout and Scholarship need to have contested a minimum of 10 rallies, including four pace-

noted rallies. Paddon and nominated personnel from Hyundai New Zealand will choose five finalists who, with their co-drivers, will attend a two-day shootout course in Auckland in December. The course offers the finalists and their codrivers a day learning from Paddon’s experience getting to the top of world rallying with theory and advice on fitness, sponsorship, media, car set-up/driving and pace notes. The second day will be in the forest, where finalists will drive the Hyundai NZ i20 AP4 rally car to each set a benchmark time, as well as practical experience writing pace notes with Paddon providing advice in the car. A judging panel of five, including Paddon, will assess each driver/co-driver on all aspects of their performance and participation throughout the shootout.

Formerly Deans Lifting Services

Johnson's the team to launch with Johnson’s Barge Service Ltd owners, Peter and Jennie Johnson, are the third generation to continue on the Johnson family business. Today Peter and Jennie still run the business at the southeast corner of the Havelock Marina. The business operates mainly in the Pelorus Sound and D’Urville Island area, but also goes as far as Nelson, Golden Bay and Queen Charlotte Sounds as required. Johnson’s Barge Service Ltd specialises in launch and barge services in the Pelorus Sounds, and can offer a wide range of barge services, including everything from cement trucks and pumping gear through to mooring installation and service. With their 4WD pivot steer loader the team is able to load and unload materials across most Sounds beaches and in many cases transport them right to the required site. They also have a three tonne forklift at the yard for unloading trucks, a hiab on two

of the barges and extensive winching and anchoring gear. They don’t just do the big jobs, small jobs are no problem either. The team runs out to the outer Sounds at least once a week and can generally fit in smaller deliveries up and down the Sounds along the way. Johnson’s Barge Services Ltd can arrange rubbish removal by supplying locally owned rubbish skips which, once filled, can be collected and brought back to Havelock where the skip operator uplifts them and takes the rubbish to the dump. If your septic tank needs cleaning out the team can arrange to transport a local septic tank service truck to your property and empty the tank. Not on the list? Just contact the friendly team and let them know what you want to do and they will help you plan a way to achieve it and provide quotes and estimates for your project.

Cafe Cortado It’s been a labour of love for the new owners of Cafe Cortado in Picton Jo Macdonald, Mark Yardley and John Yardley. After purchasing the business 18 months ago, Jo and Mark set about refurbishing it to create more dining space, a brand new deli area and a rustic new decor. The result? “It’s very cosy and welcoming with little pops of colour and interest on every wall,” Jo says. Jo, who has a background in food science and nursing, says she had always wanted to live in Picton, so when the opportunity arose to purchase the business she jumped at it. Her partner Mark is involved in many aspects of the business as well as commuting back and forth from Christchurch. He and his brother, who lives in Canada, have come on board as co-owners. They have put in place a team that not only shares their passion, but which is always striving to make the atmosphere fun and memorable for their customers. “To create the ideal team you have to surround yourself with the right people,” Jo says. “The community and our customers have been very welcoming and have become our friends. I feel privileged.” Cafe Cortado is hugely popular with locals as well

as tourists with its mouthwatering breakfast, lunch and dinner menu. The menu is a celebration of beautiful, fresh produce with a South American twist. Dishes are lovingly plated by Cafe Cortado’s Argentinian chef who combines bold colours and flavours. “There is an emphasis on Marlborough’s stunning seafood and produce which always prove popular and the diversity of dishes really creates something unique and special,” Jo says. Asked what dishes are among the popular choices, Jo says the Cortado Breakfast and the Chocolate Fondant dessert which she describes as being “goey and to die for”. Also on the menu is Cafe Cortado’s range of gourmet pizzas which can be made with gluten free bases, a fun

children’s menu as well as tapas in the evening available from 5pm. Complementing the menu is Cafe Cortado’s cocktail and wine list, selection of craft beers and the Macs range on tap. “Our cocktails can be made into mocktails for those wanting non alcoholic, and we even have some for children,” Jo says. Dine inside and enjoy the view overlooking the Picton foreshore or sit outside in the fresh air and bask in the sunshine. “We regularly have live music playing outside during summer which just adds that extra element of relaxation. If you haven’t tried it yourself we welcome you to visit us,” Jo says. Cafe Cortado will be open seven days beginning Labour Weekend.

As well as a strong interest in the arts, Phil, who retired recently from his business MarlboroughNet Online Media, brings an extensive background in visual media and management to this position. He says he has always been interested in the visual arts. As well as enhancing the artistic and creative profile of the Marlborough Art Society in the community, Morrell would like to attract more young artists to participate. He says he is looking forward to working with the Society members and the many volunteers that all contribute to ensure the success of the gallery’s exhibitions, especially the team that hang the works on the walls.

Back in the saddle A Blenheim man who spent five weeks in hospital following a motorcycle crash can’t wait to get back on his bike. Tom Brown says the crash in February was his first, despite riding motorbikes since he was just 12 years old. The 75-year-old suffered a broken shoulder socket, three broken ribs, a broken wrist and a punctured lung after being thrown into a crash barrier on the Kaikoura coast. “It was at the first tunnel near Kaikoura and there was a couple of cars in front of me and the blue one in front just stopped dead, it’s a left and right swing into that tunnel. “I probably applied [the brakes] a bit too hard and [the bike] dumped me on the ground,” Brown says. Despite the crash, Brown insists motorcycles are perfectly safe, so long as appropriate safety measures are taken, including being aware of other road users. “If someone pulls out in front of you there’s not a lot you can do … you have got to anchor right up and slow right down just in case one of those cars do come out,” he says. Appropriate riding gear help minimise injuries and is essential, for any rider, including full-length protective clothing, gloves, boots and a well-fitting helmet. The bike that riders choose to ride is also important, Brown says. “The first thing you have got to do is be able to push the motorcycle around. Push it around the yard [before you buy it]. If you can’t push it then don’t buy it, because if you can’t push it you can’t handle it,” he says.

BMW wins local race Story and photos by Celeste Alexander Bathurst fans were treated to a little slice of the action on Sunday morning at Eastern States Speedway. The club hosted a Bathurst 161 event which featured five local race teams who took each another on for the podium. There could only be one winner and that was Paddy North, son Brad and team mate Dane Jones, who won, not in a Holden or Ford, but in a BMW. The teams had to complete 161 laps of the track and have compulsory pit stops and driver changes along the way. Club captain and event organiser David Allan says it was a great event which generated quite a bit of interest. “It went better than we thought. David and son Brett were also competing along with team mates Bruce Foster and Daniel Honey in their replica model of the 1995 Holden Commodore that was raced at the 1997 Bathurst 1000 event by Peter Brock and Mark Skaife. The car made an interesting feature of the event and ended up in second place. In third place was Rob Anderson and Neil Webb and presented with the ‘Best Presented’ was Vikki Lutherus and team mates Tony Smith,

Nearo lofts first again Blenheim clubs racing pigeons were liberated at Timaru, a distance of 390 km, on Saturday at 8am into cloudy conditions and for the first time in several weeks the ranges were clear of mist. Nearo lofts in the Awatere Valley had another very good win with a speed of 76 km/hr followed by the Two Fishers partnership of Dillons Point with their bird on 75 km/hr. Alister Cooper next with 73 km/hr and then the Morrison's of Spring Creek with Donald on 69.87 km/hr and Shirley so close with 69.84 km/ hr, Ian McColm of Renwick was next on 66 km/hr.

The Marlborough Cricket SBS Bank Senior grade competition started on Saturday with wins for Renwick and Wairau Valley. At Horton Park, Celtic got off to a flying start with Ben Blackman scoring a quality 85 but they fell away to be all out for 181 with Mike Bown and Paddy Dawkins taking three wickets each. In reply Corey Bovey combined with Luke Frankland in a 60 run partnership with Renwick reaching their target in the 35th over six wickets down. At Oliver Park, Wairau Valley scored 197 for 8 with Tim Abrahams making 97. Best of the Wairau bowlers was Alex Kennedy taking 3 for 17. In reply Wairau lost early wickets and fell well short all out for 107. Sam Boyce and Ricky Bovey with three wickets each and Mark Gear two key wickets at the top. Rallying century Hayden Paddon and John Kennard will reach the milestone of 100 rallies together at this weekend’s unique mixed surface FIA World Rally Championship event in Spain. Paddon and Kennard have forged a strong partnership that started in 2006 when Paddon was just 18 and competing in his first New Zealand national rally championship season. Blenheim-based Kennard, who continues to write his own section of the record books as the oldest co-driver in the WRC at the age of 57, says: “When we started this project with Hayden, we all only had dreams about how far we could take it, but, in the end, hard work and determination from so many people, plus sometimes Hayden’s sheer bloody-mindedness to succeed, have brought it close to fruition and, for me it’s just fantastic to still be here contesting our 100th rally together.”
