Around 5000 coming to Renwick Continued from page 1 Buses will deliver them all to the Jamboree’s base camp at the Renwick Domain where they will be based up until January 7. There have already been talks between the Jamboree management team and Renwick businesses to prepare them for the increase on their services, and further public consultation was held last Friday night. The meeting saw a number of residents turn out to query about noise level, traffic plans, carparking and water usage. The team assured residents that a plan was already in place thanks to the collaboration between Scouts New Zealand and the Marlborough District Council, Marlborough

Roads, health services and other organisations. Jamboree director Guy Beatson says planning for this year’s event began two and a half years ago. Of the three South Island sites identified for the Jamboree’s location, Marlborough is by far the best, he says. “We want this Jamboree to be the best experience of the scouts’ lives and Marlborough is a really great place to do that in terms of activities. “The council has been absolutely fantastic and offered us support to help make this work. Of the three proposals we were sent, Marlborough’s was by far the best and I want to pay tribute to Susie Witehira who has been instrumental in that,” he

says. Guy went on to tell those at the meeting they were “essentially building a mini city”. “The bowling club will be our first line of defense if someone is sick or injured and the tennis courts will have a ward set up like a triage centre. St John will be on site, we have three doctors, police officers and a volunteer brigade onsite during the Jamboree so as you can see we are coming well equipped.” The top floor of the Renwick Fire Station will also have an emergency centre set up and manned 24/7. The MDC is putting infrastructure in to allow for sewerage, water and powerlines to be installed underground.

With water usage being a concern to Renwick residents, Guy assured them there was a plan in place to minimise the pressure on the town’s supply. “We are predicting 1.5million litres of water being used every day based on 300 litres per person per day. Water for washing and cleaning will be sourced from a bore located nearby and drinking water will come from the town supply,” he says. Leading up to, and during the Jamboree, a single point of contact will be set up to provide Renwick residents with a phoneline to contact the team with any concerns. The Jamboree will see the Scouts enjoy a number of water, land and air based activities from the six pods that will be set up throughout the region.

New ways to deal with our rubbish Story and photo by Cathie Bell Marlborough’s waste sorting centre opens next month, in what is a first for New Zealand. The centre started sorting commercial waste yesterday, as part of a month-long trial to ensure it’s working by the time the public starts using it, Marlborough District Council solid waste manager Alec McNeil says. The new system will see changes such as weighbridges automatically calculating the cost of people’s dumping fees and people will unload their rubbish onto a conveyor belt to be sorted, he says. That means people will have to change their behaviour, Alec says.

Darren Quin and Alec McNeil with the waste sorting machine behind them.

There is a minimum weight charge of three dollars – roughly equivalent to three full council rubbish bags

- which might mean people may be charged more than they’re used to or need to change when they take rub-

bish to the dump. Alec says people with council bags who have kerbside collection should use those bags on the kerb. If they live in an area without kerbside collection, use other, cheaper rubbish bags and take more than one to the dump. “A lot of people take their recycling to the recycling centre, and their reusable material to the store, then take a half-bag of rubbish to the dump. That will be more expensive with the minimum charge.” There are also changes to where people drive into and out of the dump. Once the rubbish is on the conveyor belt, a machine takes out smaller material as it goes through a ‘rotating shaker’ or trommel, before it

goes to a team of sorters who take out plastics, cardboard, metal, and other recyclable material. The leftover material then goes to landfill. “If the facility’s done its job, it should be pretty light,” Alec says. The machine can sort 10 tonnes an hour at full capacity, so there is room to grow. The new sorting facility opens to the public on November 14. Wastetech national product manager Darren Quin says the facility is the first of its kind in New Zealand, but they are commonplace in Australia as landfill charges are so high there, it makes sense to take out as much material as possible.

Tosca hits special note By Cathie Bell Eight year-old Liv Howard has won sponsorship for her favourite horse at the Marlborough Riding for the Disabled by writing a fantastic letter to the board of Marlborough Grape Producers’ Cooperative. The determined girl rides Tosca most afternoons when she takes riding lessons at Blenheim’s Riding for the Disabled centre at Churchward Park. Volunteer Mandy Macfarlane says RDA is working to get every horse sponsored, which means finding someone to pay $3000 a year. She spoke to Craig, the cooperative’s general manager. Liv got wind of it and wrote an amazing letter to the board of Marlborough Grape Producers’ Cooperative. Craig says he took the letter to the board. There was ‘no debate’, he says, and the board are happy to sponsor Tosca. “We’re a grassroots organisation, we like to help grassroots organisations. We’re happy to help.” There are others in his organisation who help out too, he says, and sponsoring Tosca seems a good way to do more. Daughter Liv is a ‘big fan’ of horses, Craig says. She’s been riding about a year, taking lessons after school. “When she got wind of a sponsorship opportunity, she thought it was a tremendously good idea.” Liv says she likes Tosca best of all the horses she has ridden. Tosca is used for all riders, disabled and able-bodied, Mandy says. The Marlborough Riding for the Disabled centre is the best in New Zealand, and in the top three in the world, she says. The horses and the Riding for the Disabled Association staff provide vital therapy care to young people helping them to develop movement, starting with very young children right through to adults. There are about 80 riders in the community who directly benefit from riding. As well as looking after the horses and

Govt to fund boaties Maritime New Zealand has given $20,350 to the Marlborough District Council to run tailored safety training courses for local boaties and support material, plus on-water patrols as part of Safer Boating Week this week. The funding comes from the fuel excise duty on petrol, some of which is paid by recreational boaties fuelling power boats. “Our aim is to support community programmes that help boaties be safer,” the Chair of the Safer Boating Forum and Maritime NZ deputy director Lindsay Sturt says.

Nashville ‘unforgettable’

Fresh NZ Lamb Shoulder Chops

Country music duo NeillyRich have played in Nashville for the first time ever, fulfilling a dream long held by the couple. Matthew McNeilly, previously from Blenheim, and his wife Amelia McNeillyWooley are based in Australia and visited Nashville, the home of country music as part of a Sounds Australia contingent, artists who were hand-picked to perform as part of the annual event . Matthew says the couple loved Nashville, ‘from the neon lights of Broadway to the amazing music culture of Music Row, there was always something to see and do’. “Playing at the Blue Bird Cafe was an amazing highlight and was an experience we will never forget. “We can’t wait to go back.” The Bluebird Café is a famous venue, where

a lot of artists have had their lucky break. It is considered a real staple of the Nashville experience if you’re going there for country music. NeillyRich sang some original songs, some already published and others from an album they are recording now. It will be released early next year. Matthew and Amelia met at the Tamworth 40th Anniversary Festival in 2012, and are now married. Their 2016 highlights to date include winning the NZ Golden Fern Award for Best Group/Duo, winning the Frank Ifield International Spur Award, achieving a UK Country Chart Number 2 song, being a nominated finalist for the Mo Awards, as well as supporting Daryl Braithwaite and Kirsty Lee Akers on national tour events.

Christchurch Symphony Orchestra marketing manager Michelle Walsh and chief executive Gretchen La Roche were wowed by the ASB Theatre.

Top class orchestra soon to arrive Story and photo by Celeste Alexander Representatives from the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra visited Blenheim earlier this month to tour the ASB Theatre ahead of their two show performance next weekend. This is hugely exciting for Robin Sutherland who spearheaded the subscription season that will be bringing the CSO and other major national productions to the theatre. The season is titled Cavalcade on Stage in Marlborough which was unveiled last year and is a new concept in the promotion of shows, Robin says. The season has 10 shows held in 12 months and works by having people subscribe on a regular basis. It gives subscribers a seat reserved to see the 10 shows and enables Robin to search for and contract top shows to play at the theatre. “It provides security to us in that the subscription revenue stream will support the cost of bringing these shows to Marlborough,” he says. The success of this years season (July to June) will determine who will come for the next, Robin adds. “The CSO is the biggest production we have coming in by far, it’s a top grade orchestra. It hasn’t been here for years so if we make a success of this they will come back for next year. “I also want to bring the Court Theatre next year and they are keen to come too. It’s excit-

ing times but nerve wracking too,” he laughs. The CSO is the fourth production in the season and will see a show held on October 29 and a matinee performance on October 30. The orchestra has 60 members who, according to Robin, are very active in Christchurch and fully professional. “While they are here they will be mentoring our local orchestra members, giving tutoring lessons and also organising a few to play with them,” he says. CSO chief executive Gretchen La Roche and marketing manager Michelle Walsh enjoyed a personal tour of the theatre and facilities and say they are really excited to come. “It’s a real treat to play in a fine facility like this. We play in the airforce museum so everyone is eager to come here and meet the Blenheim audience,” Gretchen says. As well as Marlborough audiences Robin is also keen to extend his territory and market Cavalcade on Stage in Marlborough to Nelson. “Here we have this amazing theatre and the ability to attract some top class performances to Marlborough that don’t usually tour here, so it’s my job to go out there and talk to people and get them in,” he says. More information is available on the Cavalcade on Stage in Marlborough website and subscriptions can be done online.

Zac impresses with country tones Photos by Kathy Johnston A young country performer visited Blenheim last Sunday to star as guest artist at the Blenheim Country Music Club’s Concert Day, and along the way met up with his mentor and ‘favourite artist’. Zac Griffiths (11) took the stage and impressed the audience, particularly the youth, and helped to make the day a big success. Club president Warren Johnston says

it was “a most successful day with the audience enthralled with the talent of such a young performer who well deserved the standing ovation and praise from an appreciative local crowd”. It also gave Zac a chance to rub shoulders with local artist Rick McCallum who Zac looks up to. Rick has watched Zac perform at various Blenheim Country Music Club band members on stage with guest artist Zac Griffiths at Sunvenues around the South Island and knows day’s concert in Blenheim. Isolation inspires art Growing up in an isolated area of the West Coast, Bonnie Coad spent much of her childhood reading and drawing. Where her family lived there was no electricity so she had to find ways to amuse herself, and from there her artistic abilities were born. Today, a self described ‘emerging artist’ Bonnie’s art is starting to reach new heights and even corners of the globe, as reporter Celeste Alexander finds out. Bonnie lives in the Onamalutu Valley on a lifestyle section. Her art studio looks out over grassy paddocks, farm animals and towards the ranges providing daily inspiration for her art. Bonnie comes from an artistic family and growing up in an isolated area without modern conveniences “pushed me towards being creative”, she says. “It used to rain a lot and being in the middle of nowhere meant I had the time to explore my creative side. “It was always there, in my family there are a lot of musicians and my mother is amazing with watercolours. My father was always a jack of all trades, good at building and technical drawing, so it was just a case of me finding my own path,” she says. After leaving school at the age of 15 Bonnie went out into the workforce wanting to earn her own money and be independent. It wouldn’t be until later in her life that she studied for and gained her art degree. Work took her into horticulture, organic farming, orchards and seasonal work. Twelve years ago Bonnie made the move to Marlborough and soon after began working for Wither Hills. On the side Bonnie and her partner have a small farm and of course her art. Wanting to pursue her art more, Bonnie cut her hours to three days a week to allow herself more time in the studio. “I have been emerging for a while now and people are starting to recognise me, so my goal moving forward is to look for serious gallery representation. “It’s a lot of work promoting yourself,” she says. Bonnie describes her art as an experimentation using colour and textured compositions.

One series of her work that is creating a lot of interest is her Pattern Animals collection which sees Bonnie use paint and a collage of wording cut from paper patterns. Through this series she shows her love for animals and quirky nature. Her art can be seen at various locations throughout Marlborough and much to Bonnie’s delight, it will also soon be travelling the globe. She submitted one of her works to an Italian publication after it sent out proposals to over 100 New Zealand artists. A small canvas was sent to Bonnie with instructions on what to do. It will then become part of a collection that exhibits around the world. For it, Bonnie created a tiny pattern bird and had it accepted. “It’s very exciting to know that my art will be travelling the world,” she says. Next on her calendar is an art exhibition in Nelson over Labour Weekend. This will be her sixth year and Bonnie says she has been “working my butt off” to have enough art ready. “It’s crazy hectic but a lot of fun. The minimum for entry is 10 pieces but I want to take 20.” Sales wise she did well last year but what makes it worthwhile is meeting people who look out for her art each year. “I have people tell me they remembered my art from the previous year and made a point of searching for me to see what new ones I have made up. “It’s a great feeling,” she says. For locals wanting to see Bonnie’s work for themselves, Detour Gallery in Blenheim will be exhibiting some pieces at the end of the month.

New bike arrives at Ashwood Story and photo by Celeste Alexander Ashwood Retirement Village resident May Harris cycled her bike well into her 60s before getting her first driver’s license and has many great memories of the places she has been to. She was more than happy to share those memories during the unveiling of a new Cycling Without Age ‘Trishaw Bike’ that was delivered on last Wednesday. May was one of the residents who eagerly climbed into the bike designed to carry two passengers up front, side-by-side, with the cyclist positioned behind them. A motor helps the cyclist with steeper terrain. The Trishaw Bike was delivered by Tristan Saunders of the Arvida Group who spoke to residents and staff about the benefits. “Arvida brought the first of these bikes into the country last November and the success of it was so great that another seven were purchased and are being rolled out to communities throughout the country. “Being a Blenheim boy at heart I am pleased to be here today delivering one to Ashwood and from what

I have heard from the residents who have had a ride already, I’m sure it’s going to be well used and my brother Sturrock doesn’t know it yet, but I’ve volunteered him to cycle it.” he says. Tristan invited May to have a seat in the Trishaw first. “ I t ’s v e r y nice, especially when you have a lovely man sitting beside you,” she joked as fellow resident Vern Neal took a seat beside her. T he u nvei l i ng also attracted other members of the community, including a bike shop owner and Deb Healy who works for the Marlborough Primary Health Organisation. Deb’s father is a resident at the village and she says she is excited about the benefits of the Trishaw Bike, and has put her hand up to volunteer to cycle it. “I work with the Green Prescription which goes hand in hand with this sort of thing so I will be going

Climbing the hills for cellphone walker Scott Henry and Marianne Vertelman fight the fire at Riverlands.

Fire quickly out

A small fire on the Wither Hills near the southern end of Cob Cottage Road yesterday is a reminder to people to be careful, Marlborough Kaikoura Rural Fire Authority principal fire officer Richard McNamara says. A good response from Blenheim and Rarangi fire crews, backed up with a helicopter for 30 minutes, saw

it dealt with quickly. Richard says people need to be aware of the risks. “We don’t have fire restrictions at the moment, but they will be coming on in a month. “People need to be careful. It’s an expensive business bringing in fire crews and helicopters.”

Foxton couple Henry and Christine Cleary arrived in Blenheim last week for the start of the Southern Classic Commercials ‘Top of the South’ tour.

By John Urlich Solo trampers need to be wellequipped, Marlborough LandSAR trainer John Urlich says. He recommends several useful things to take, such as GPS, compass, headlamp, torch, adequate food and water, matches/ lighter, sleeping bag, shelter and weather knowledge, as basic essentials. A mist-capped Mt Stanley in the Marlborough Sounds in a southerly wind with cold horizontal rain along with steep and slippery ground and at night is not the place you want to be without gear, John says. “That’s when you need to call for outside help.” A solo tramper lost on Mt Stanley last month had a cellphone and a personal locator beacon, and after calling police and activating the beacon, search and rescue were called out as the Rescue Coordination Centre couldn’t send a helicopter because of the weather conditions. ‘Mark’ was told to stay put and he waited in the dark for eight cold hours in one spot. Fatigue is a major factor in overnight operations, John says. He had begun his Saturday at 6am with a run in the Wither Hills and worked all day in

Peter Selby, “Mark”, John Urlich, and Kerry Lammas.

three different locations around Marlborough, including pine tree pruning and other physical tasks. He had just sat down to have his dinner when the phone call came for people to help on a rescue on Mt Stanley. “When someone needs help though, Marlborough Search & Rescue will respond.” After a briefing, the team drove one and a half hours to Duncan Bay in the Marlborough Sounds to find ‘Mark’. By 10.30pm, ‘Mark’ was so cold he could no longer use his fingers to text on his cellphone, but they could hear him yell. When they reached him, he had very cold legs, no feeling

at all in the feet, and possible dehydration. He was given a puffer jacket and swannie to preserve core temperature, as well as hot food and a cocoa. With everyone getting more tired, the team got off the mountain slowly, he says, finally reaching the carpark at 8am on Sunday. They were met by the police’s Shaun Crabb and search and rescue team member Julia Eason who had driven over early to drive John’s car back, which was just as well as he fell asleep between Rai Valley and Renwick. “A great team effort all round.”

Summer ailments Summer should be fun, but people Dehydration/Headaches miss out on the good times due to The whole family needs to drink plenty of water. For mild dehydration, which is often seasonal hazards. related to headaches, drink water, rehydration

The Marlborough Primary Health Organisation asked the nurses at Springlands Health for advice on how to make the most of summer by avoiding common ailments.

Sunburn/Heat Rash Try to stay out of the sun between 10am and 4pm. Always cover up - wear a hat and sunnies and reapply sunscreen every two hours and after being in the water. Remember you can get burnt on a cloudy day, so take care. A cool shower or running cool water over the burn area for 20 minutes can be soothing. Don’t burst large blisters. Aloe vera gel can help to cool and calm sunburn and heat rash, as can keeping it covered with a non-perfumed moisturiser. Tummy bugs There are a lot of stomach bugs in summer due to undercooking or leaving food out for too long. Do not eat food lukewarm or after it has sat on the bench for a while. If a sick person cannot keep food and water down, introduce water and/or rehydration fluid gradually. Start with a teaspoon of fluid every 10 minutes, if this is kept down, after an hour, increase to a dessert spoon every 10 minutes. After an hour, take some sips. If you feel hungry after three hours of no stomach activity, eat a little food. Talk to your pharmacist, GP nurse or GP regarding medication options.

fluid or a sports drink containing electrolytes slowly over time. The patient should feel better within an hour or two. Stay in a cool place and rest so the body can rehydrate without sweating. If the dehydration is severe or the headache doesn’t subside see your GP or the Urgent After-Hours GP. Bites and Stings Remove the bee’s stinger by scraping it with a finger nail or blunt knife. Vinegar will help neutralise the venom. Apply ice compresses for bites and stings every two to three hours to reduce swelling and pain. Try soaking in a cool bath, or applying calamine lotion or aloe vera. Talk to a pharmacist about pain relief and antihistamines. Allergic reactions require immediate attention: Call 111 if the patient has hives, swelling in the face, difficulty breathing, dizziness, or fainting, or has had a serious allergic reaction to an insect bite or sting before. Cuts and scrapes Stop bleeding by applying pressure Hygiene is key. Wash your hands, then wash the wound well with water. If it’s a gravel graze, give the wound a wash to remove all the bits of gravel. Once clean, apply antiseptic cream if possible and then cover the wound - keep it covered until it is healed. If signs of infection develop (redness, oozing, fever) talk to a pharmacist or see your GP.

Your options for healthcare Your GP: Make an appointment early when you can, but remember that most GP clinics have some appointments free for acute cases each day. You can sign up for ACC at your family doctor’s practice. Marlborough After-Hours GPs: Urgent after-hours medical care. The clinic is in the hospital grounds off Hospital

Rd, and is open from 6pm to 10pm on weekdays and 8am to 10pm on weekends and public holidays. Phone 03 520 6377. Healthline: 0800 611 116 for free advice from trained registered nurses. Pharmacists: For advice, a range of pharmacy-only medicines, emergency supplies of on-going prescription medicines and first aid.

Derry leads race The crowd delights in a clash between Blenheim and Nelson stock cars during last season. There will be plenty of this action on Saturday. SpeedNut Photography.

Ready to race

Speedway season kicks off this weekend By Celeste Alexander Get ready for a horsepower overload this Saturday as Eastern States Speedway holds its opening night for the 2016/2017 season. With a number of new drivers across the home classes there is plenty of excitement in the air and hours of preparation happening in garages ahead of the weekend. Club captain David Allan says the opening night is a double club points event which encourages drivers to have their cars finished in time to start the season. The five home classes of stock cars, saloons, street stocks, productions and youth ministocks will hit the track with fresh paint, rebuilt engines and drivers with an eye on the prize as they battle for a lead in club points. A number of Nelson cars will also be making the trip over since their own season began last weekend. “The whole club is definitely looking forward to kicking the season off. We have good numbers across all the classes including some new drivers that came out of the Farmlands Street Cars Series held over the past two years. “We have three production drivers and one stock car driver from that series. That’s

four guys who have made the step up to mainstream speedway racing,” David says. In addition to the race action there will be usual crowd favourites, Mr Whippy icecream, a coffee cart, hot food and sweet treats available for purchase. For those wanting to watch the racing from the comfort of their own vehicle, the club is continuing to offer up to 25 spaces to park on the embankment which has proven popular since it was introduced a year ago. “For an additional fee you can sit in your car, enjoy a picnic and watch the racing. It was so popular last year that we had to turn people away so it’s available on a first in, first serve basis,” David says. Another key feature that contributed to last season’s success was the favourable track conditions. “We put a lot of effort into maintaining good track conditions which makes our drivers happier, our visiting drivers happier and we are able to put on better shows. “The club has also secured the purchase of a new grader which means we are going to be able to continue providing good tracks,” David says. Gates open on Saturday at 5pm, racing starts at 6pm.
