Flaxbourne Museum operators Sally Peter and Jack Taylor have plans for a new building to house the many treasures they have but can’t fit in their small building. They are using the Marlborough premiere of the Hollywood movie filmed on Sally’s farm to start the fundraising. Hollywood movie premiere to fund new museum Continued from page 1 The Flaxbourne Museum has a collection of artefacts, fossils, equipment, and the life stories of many people in the district. It also has a significant collection of photographs, most of which can’t be displayed properly in the current building, Sally says. She says that when she first became a resident of the Flaxbourne district, some 30 years ago, she had some knowledge of its history because her father had been born here and his parents were one of the many that took up the opportunity to immigrate and make the district their home at the turn of the century. “Until I became a volunteer

at the Flaxbourne Museum, I was unaware of how much material we had to offer to the public, unique stories that must be told.” Many of those stories have been collected by Jack, who has published histories of the region that have captured the stories of many residents in the district who have since died. Sally says the museum building, on State Highway 1 next to the Allied fuel stop, is ‘crammed to the gunnels’ with things and they have a lot more in archives. She has plans for a ‘Flaxbourne heritage centre’, a new building with interactive displays that promote the Flaxbourne district, as it has been

in the past and as it is now, so that tourists can visit and then go out and see the sights – ‘sort of like an I-site’. “We want to promote what you can do here and what could be in the future… There is a point of difference out here.” The Flaxbourne district in the south of Marlborough gets ‘a bit left out’, Sally says. “People drive through without realising what’s here.” The district had the first large-scale sheep station in the South Island, owned by Sir Frederick Weld, who was Prime Minister from 1864 to 1865. It was him who moved the capital of New Zealand from

Auckland to Wellington. The district has Marlborough’s only lighthouse, at Cape Campbell, on Sally and husband Rob Peter’s farm, which hosted the Hollywood movie crew filming ‘The Light Between Oceans’. The movie is released next month, and Sally has organised a Marlborough premiere on November 2 to raise money for the Flaxbourne Heritage Centre. About 350 people are to attend, with pre-movie drinks at Houston Motors’ showroom. CRT has sponsored food, along with WK, Burkharts, Mitre 10, Number One Family Estate, and other locals helping out.

Wine industry to meet again on labour Representatives of Marlborough’s wine industry will get together again next month to discuss the next steps to cope with a massive increase in the industry. A survey carried out last year shows the industry expects an extra 6800 hectares to be planted in grapes in the next four years, which would need the extra 189 permanent workers, 600 more RSE workers, and another 442 casual workers to prune and harvest. How to recruit those people, house them in Blenheim, and look after them are all big problems.

Participants say the impact of the projected growth may be higher as the survey is only looking at viticulture and not wine production. Industry representatives met in July to begin work on how to deal with the issues from that growth, and Wine Marlborough general manager Marcus Pickens says a steering group of six people has been set up and a ‘white paper’ written. That document sets out the issues and what needs to be done to deal with them. Marcus says another meeting of industry representatives is being called, probably for

November 22, and the work will be allocated to different parts of the industry. The steering group is likely to do some more work and will continue to monitor progress, he says. The group is made up of Marcus, Gus Struthers from Indevin and Seasonal Solutions, Neil Henry from the Marlborough District Council, Lyn Williams from the Ministry of Social Development, Pip Jamieson from the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment, and Beth Tester from the Marlborough Primary Health Organisation.

Still very much in love Story and photo by Celeste Alexander Blenheim lovebirds Ivan and Shirley Williamson celebrated 60 years of marriage yesterday with a small gathering of friends and family. Asked what the key is to their happy marriage they both agree it is “working as a team”. Ivan first laid eyes on Shirley when she was 16, standing in a Picton shop frontage cleaning the window. He had arrived for a job interview for a management position and was clearly taken by Shirley, later inviting her to the movies. Their employer had a rule that his staff were not allowed to be romantically involved, so Shirley was given notice to leave and got an office job at the Picton railway. Meanwhile Ivan heard what happened and left the job to start his own business, Cash Drapery and Picton Furnishing Co. Their romance continued to blossom and after waiting for Shirley’s father’s approval, five years later they married at the Holy Trinity Anglican Church. Sixty years on, Ivan still looks at his wife with the same admiration and love, and together they were thrilled to celebrate their diamond wedding anniversary yesterday. “Ivan has always been

romantic and had such a caring nature,” Shirley says. “I won’t forget the day he proposed, it rained and rained... in fact it couldn’t have rained any harder,” Shirley laughs. Their wedding night was even more memorable, Ivan says, because upon arrival at the motel they were staying at in Havelock, they found they had been locked out. “The owners had forgotten we were coming so we had to climb up the fire escape to alert someone to let us in. “We won’t forget that day,” he laughs. The married couple went on to have two daughters, Maree and Sandra, then shifted to Blenheim where Ivan worked as sales manager for Terry Motors, now trading as Wadsco Motor World. He worked there for around 25 years while Shirley worked at Thomas’s Department Store also for 25 years. From there, their journey together went on to be full of adventure and travel. “We have been trying to think what we have done over the past 60 years, but to be honest it’s been such a busy life that I can’t think of just one great thing. “We have been very lucky to have had so much happiness and a great marriage. “The key is to work as a

Phil Brown to retire Local tyre business set to move in By Celeste Alexander It’s been a great 41 years working in the motor vehicle industry for Phil Brown but with more grandchildren on the way he is looking to spend time with his family. Phil and his wife Paula have had their business, Phil Brown Motors on the corner of Main Street and Park Terrace for nearly 21 years and are pleased to announce they have sold the property to local business Jacks Tyres. “With number five grandchild on the way and family celebrations ahead I’m really looking forward to being with them more. “I have loved working in this industry, especially the people I have met

and made friends with along the way. There is always something different every day,” he says. Phil joked that his office was like a “drop in centre”. “People were always dropping in for a chat, it was great like that. I’m hoping people will pop in and see me before I finish up here,” he says. November 30 is the change over date and although retired, Phil will still be available to help his clients where needed. “I will still have my dealer’s license so if clients need me to find them a car or help them with advice I will certainly be available,” he says. Wither Hills Farm Park Weed Control Programme Mountain Bike Park

As part of Council’s weed management programme the following area is to be targeted for control of gorse and broom. The control method will be both mechanical and by hand. Selected areas within the planned work area will be worked in isolation as much as possible to avoid total closure of the park. The general pattern of work will be to start from the northern boundary of the park and progress southwards. Please note that this work will most likely be carried out at same time as other soil conservation works in the area. This means that at times total seclusion zones will apply with no public access. Works will commence from 24 October and run through to 25 November except when fire risk is deemed to be too high to carry out the work. The public is advised to keep vigilant and obey all signage and instructions of contractors on site for their own safety. Signage will be erected at main Farm Park entrances to alert users to the work and will remain in place until the work has been fully completed. The public is urged to observe all warning signs and instructions from Contractors on site. Get ready for a dry summer in the garden Renwick, Picton and Havelock residents are asked to remember all their good water-saving habits again in the coming summer so that water restrictions can be avoided. Labour Weekend is traditionally the time when water use for garden irrigation starts to climb in Marlborough but this year gardeners are being urged to do what they can to reduce that use. • Opt for drought-tolerant plants where possible • Spread mulch around the garden • Use soak hoses under the mulch rather than sprinklers and water

wands Remember lawns need less than 30 minutes watering two or three times a week • Don’t mow lawns too short; leaving grass longer helps slow down evapotranspiration and the lawn will need less irrigation. Picton residents should be careful with their water use as there is less water available to the town while its water supply at Speeds Road is being upgraded to meet the national drinking water standards. The capacity of the town’s supply will be 20% lower than •

usual until the work is completed, in February. In the coming weeks, Council will undertake another round of leak detection surveys in Havelock, Renwick and Seddon, checking for leaks in the water supply network. Resource consents With resource consents required for almost everything these days, one must ask Marlborough Lines if they applied for a resource consent to place two unsightly transformers in the De Castro neighbourhood. Marlborough Lines, what are you doing to blend these into the surroundings?

Nice young man It’s not just Julie at Scott Street service station, let’s not forget the young man who pumps the petrol, he’s always chatty and cheerful.

Not even a smile An observation there are some very grumpy people on mobility scooters around town. Even when I smile and hold the door for them. Not very endearing. Is that a chip on your shoulder? Think about it.

Bullying in schools Distressing to hear several bullying incidents happening at schools. Schools - please address bullying issues. Get Police to talk to kids about the serious effect it can have on people - nightmares, sleep problems, nausea, etc...even suicide. Bullying is the fault of the bully - Not the person they are getting at. Often a bullied person gets caught retaliating and is strongly reprimanded - so too should the bullies. Make them known to all. When are the schools going to teach all their pupils to stop bullying other kids. Not a good look!

Fantastic...migrant centre! Kudos to Margaret Western and her team for working to create an interesting and fun event, the international women’s night last week. Team key to success This week marks the start of a period of consolidation and growth for the Simply Asia Food Group Limited, the company that operates Bamboo Garden Restaurant, The Lemongrass, and Chai Yo Asian Cafe here in Blenheim and in Nelson. Key to this period of change is the appointment of a new operations manager, Claude Jagers who hails from South Africa. “I fell in love with the industry, the food and the social aspect, meeting so many people from diverse cultures. “I really enjoyed it and I still do,” he says. Company director Bunga Krataitong plans to continue putting a lot of resource into training and developing staff, all of whom are employed from the local community. “We have experienced considerable growth in the last three years. I want to thank our loyal customers who continue to support us and our fantastic team. We couldn’t have done it without you.” Looking to the future, Bunga says they have been working with Destination Marlborough. “We are attracting Asian tourists who want to experience authentic Asian cuisine that has been prepared in the traditional way but using local Marlborough produce. This has generated a lot of interest,” she says.

Fish kit for schools By Cathie Bell Marlborough Sounds salmon farmer New Zealand King Salmon has produced a school education kit for primary schools to teach children about aquaculture. The company’s general manager aquaculture Mark Preece gave Springlands School principal Gaylene Beattie a kit on Wednesday afternoon. It is being distributed to all Marlborough primary schools. Mark says the kit contains a range of easy-to-use classroom activities for students, and will help teachers, students and par-

ents understand about king salmon, how salmon is farmed in Marlborough, the benefits of salmon as a high value health food, and the career opportunities that exist within aquaculture. The company says the kit was developed in consultation with Marlborough teachers, with input from science teacher Melynda Bentley, in recognition of the region’s aquaculture industry. “Marlborough is a unique place in which aquaculture, viticulture, tourism and aviation play a major role in the economy.” Each task has links with the New Zealand Curriculum, with

the major focus on science (specifically the nature of science learning area) and social studies. Each activity is also linked to one or more of the key competencies. There is no set order in which activities need to be completed, you simply choose the activities suitable to your class. Activities can be done as a whole class, in groups or individually. Mark says the company has staff available to talk to students about their work as well. Gaylene says the kit could come in handy when students are learning about water and its uses. Springlands School principal Gaylene Beattie receives a resource kit from NZ King Salmon’s Mark Preece.

Labour’s Kaikoura candidate Janette Walker says Marlborough has a housing crisis. She says Marlborough has the second longest wait time for people on the social housing register and the numbers are increasing weekly. “I should know, because I deal with these stressed families every day and have written countless letters to Housing NZ advocating for these people.”

Labour MPs invite you to a public meeting about Marlborough’s housing crisis.

No excuses for no lifejackets and speeding The Marlborough District Council is one of eight councils trialling a ‘no excuses’ policy for recreational boaties not carrying or wearing lifejackets and those who speed on the water, Maritime New Zealand says. As part of Safer Boating Week, Maritime New Zealand director Keith Manch says boaties who break councils’ lifejacket and speed rules will be given infringement notices of up to $300, depending on each council’s existing bylaws. The trial will be run for about five days by each council at different times during summer. After summer, the trial will be reviewed and decisions made about whether it will be extended in future. “We are focusing on boaties who do not carry or wear lifejackets (as required by the Maritime Transport Act and Regional Council bylaws) and also unsafe speed because they are two of the biggest risks of death and injury,” Keith says. “Up to two-thirds of recreational boaties who died might have been saved if they wore lifejackets. Wearing your lifejacket is the single most important thing you can do to avoid drowning if you end up unexpectedly in the water. “Boaties speeding in congested areas is dangerous and can cause injuries to children, swimmers, divers and people in small craft. There is a five knot speed limit when you are near the shore, swimmers, divers and other boats.” The trial, funded by Maritime NZ, will enable harbourmasters and their staff to get out on the water more often.

Q A Q A Q A Q A

What ’s your most annoying habit? Smoking. It annoys me that I can’t give up.

One of my best holidays was... Coming to NZ 12 years ago and deciding this is where we wanted to live. And here we are. What ’s your fondest childhood memory? Days spent with my granny learning country lore on long walks through the backfields of Norfolk and living next door to the RAF Coltishall. What is the one thing people don’t know about you? LOL. You might ask that but I can’t possibly say.

Q A Q A Q A Q A

What’s your favourite meal? Porterhouse blue steak with large cut chips and a black cherry and caramelised onion sauce washed down with a decent NZ Pinot Noir. My guilty TV pleasure is ..... Star Trek. I am a ‘Trekkie’ but not one of the dresser uppers.

What’s your greatest fear? I fear nothing, but I would be distraught if anything bad happened to my wife or daughter. How do you want to be remembered? As a nice person and an awesome dad.

Q A

Who would you love to share a meal with and why? William Shatner, for wit and repartee, Ian Botham for straight answers and Liv Tyler to brighten up the vista.

Rowing fierce The sun shone, the crowds came and cheered when Wairau Rowing Club held their annual Corporate rowing 8s competition recently, the culmination of six weeks training on erg machines and on the water in the clubs rowing 8s. Nine teams raced and the competition was fierce with close and eventful racing the order of the day. PGG Wrightson Omaka Jets showed their class on the water for the second year by edging the Dog Point Vineyard crew in the final. Team spokesman Joe Blakiston said it was a real buzz for novice rowers to get out on the water and to be trained by the high performance squad members who are based in the area. Cloudy Bay, Giesen and Marlborough District Council won the B and C finals in what has become a popular fundraiser for the club. Mike McManaway, club spokesman would love to see three or four more teams take up the challenge for next year for bragging rights. The highlight for the PGG Wrightson team was a last minute challenge against the combined members of the rowing centre of excellence squad , which was an entertaining race and showed that the future of rowing in Marlborough is in good shape.

Aaron Smith plays his cards right Aaron Smith has done the right thing to stand himself down from the All Blacks test on Saturday night against the Wallabies. Arguably one of New Zealand’s best players had no other option and it’s a smart public relations move on his part and the All Blacks in general. He has naturally been under fire after footage was released of him in a disabled toilet with a woman who was not his partner. While, not a law-breaking offence, in today’s gossip-filled news era, it’s been a story that’s

just kept going. You have to feel for his partner in that situation and she’s been thrown into a circus of which she created none of it. However Smith’s choice (which was probably forced on him), is a good long term move from the Highlanders and Manawatu player. Sure, he misses a test, but the test is largely meaningless. It also allows him to look remorseful and win back a little public goodwill. Short term pain, long term gain

at its best. Smith’s position as the top halfback in black is not in danger, his pass and decision making have him highly rated, even in this golden era of New Zealand rugby. By the end of year Northern Hemisphere tour, all of this will be forgotten by the general public. Most will see it as a punishment served, embarrassment caused and let’s move on. I’m sure that’s what the New Zealand Rugby Union will be thinking as well.

U36. It will be up to the other competitors to push harder, John says. “The boat is going well and today being a lay day, local mechanic Matt Ryan was able to do further maintenance, but really the boys have done a great job,” says John. “Now we just have to get through these next two days, it’s a good lead but anything can happen.” Blenheim’s second competitor Greg Simpsons is having a great run, currently in seventh position

With two days remaining of the NZ Jetboat Marathon, John Derry from Blenheim in his Speights Ale House U36 has the race to lose. John with local navigator Brent Hefford lead by more than five minutes. As the marathon has progressed John and Brent have continued to increase their lead. After day two where slow competitors are supposed to give way to the faster boats, some chose not to, effectively holding John up and

overall and leading his FX class by more than 30 minutes. This year’s NZ Marathon is a prelude to next year’s World Championship to be held in New Zealand, where competitors will race on the same rivers. For John and Brent, it is important that their new jetboat with the helicopter turbine can stand up to the rigors of this year’s NZ Marathon.
