More sections yes!

By Cathie Bell The Marlborough District Council’s housing subdivision sections are selling like hotcakes, and more sections are to be released on the market later this month. Ten sections were sold last Friday, and another 27 are to be put on the market in a few weeks. Rowan Lee from Peter Ray Homes says he was pleased the council will allocate more sections to the market. Continued on page 2 Donna and Rowan Lee from Peter Ray Homes are looking forward to more sections being made available in Blenheim. Photo by Les Whiteside.

More sections on the block Continued from page 1 Ten sections in Stage Five of the Marlborough District Council’s Boulevard Park on Taylor subdivision were auctioned by Bayleys Marlborough last Friday. Council property and community facilities manager Jamie Lyall says nine sold on the day, and the last is under negotiation. Another 27 are to be auctioned later this month, adding to the 223 sections already sold in the subdivision. There are another 80 potential lots to develop on the council-owned land along Taylor Pass Road. Jamie says there is a bit of work to be done before those can be sold, but

‘one would like to think we’d move as expeditiously as we can’ to get them sold too. The demand for sections is ‘astounding’, he says. “That $6million of sales wasn’t projected to happen for another two years. “It’s astounding actually. I don’t know what’s driving it. We had a pick up back in 2006-07, but then it just stopped. We’re in a similar vein at the moment – long may it last.” The sold sections were projected to be sold during the next 10 years, Jamie says, and the funding from the sales goes to the land reserve, used for council projects around the

district. “In light of the recent influx of sales, the money has come in a lot sooner than forecast, but as (chief financial officer) Martin Fletcher told council the other day, once the money is gone, it’s gone. And the same with the land.” The majority of the section sales money was already allocated, he says. The advantage for the council is that it is ‘in the bank’ sooner, which is why the council’s net debt position is ‘so positive’. Rowan Lee from Peter Ray Homes says he was pleased the council will allocate more sections to the market. “The council are being sensible in

drip-feeding sections to the current market.” Putting 10 to 15 up for sale at a time is a good number and make it easier for the council to process titles quickly, he says. Jamie says some of the sections are selling to people from out of town – two from Friday sold to buyers from Porirua, near Wellington – but most are to ‘Mum and Dad’ buyers from Marlborough, he says. It is understood that with the demand for housing, particularly in the extremely tight rental market, people are leveraging against their family home to buy a section and plan to rent it out when their new house is built.

Tourism Promotion Group chairman Jim Boult cuts the ribbon to open the new exhibition, with Aviation Heritage Trust chairman Brian Greenall.

Russian ambassador Valery Tereshchenko speaks at the exhibition opening.

Omaka opening an emotional time By Cathie Bell The Russian people half a world away from Blenheim will think warmly of it because of a new exhibition at the Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre. Guests at the official opening on Friday of ‘Dangerous Skies, the new Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre exhibition on World War II, were told it is one of the few Western museums to have a focus on a Russian aspect of the war. The Battle of Stalingrad display is an emotional one for Russians who view it as a ‘sacred’ part of their society and culture, the Russian ambassador and a Moscow university professor say about the unforgettable impact of the battle on the Russian people. Russian ambassador Valery

Tereshchenko says the battle was a turning point in World War II, one the Nazis could not recover from. He presented centre trust chairman Brian Greenall with the translation of a diary by a young woman inside Stalingrad during the siege. It would help young people who studied it to understand the ‘horror and devastation of the war’, he says. “I hope this exhibition will contribute to the noble purpose of preserving the names of the heroes who fought against fascism.” Roman A. Matasov, an associate professor at Lomonosov Moscow State University in Russia, helped collect Stalingrad-related artifacts in Russia and then bring them to Blenheim for the exhibition.

For him, it is a personal event, as his grandmother lived several months under the Nazi occupation near Stalingrad in 1942. Roman says the ‘spectacular’ exhibition ‘in no way glorifies’ the war. “It does glorify the fallen and living heroes though, as many a man and many a woman covered themselves with glory in that decisive battle: thousands of Soviet privates, officers, generals, brave pilots like Lidiya Litvyak and Mikhail Baranov, nurses, homefront workers and the youngest defender of Stalingrad Sergey Alyoshkov who was only six years old in 1942. “In Russia, we will never forget the significant contribution of our allies—New Zealanders, espe-

cially audacious New Zealand pilots and sailors who took part in the Arctic Convoys, Australians, British, Americans, Canadians, French—who helped the Soviet Union gain the triumphant victory over the Axis powers. “The main goal of this exhibition, as I see it, is to show its visitors the atrocities of that terrible war. We all should learn lessons from our turbulent history and do all that we can so that the terrible things of the past never ever happen again and so that our children and grandchildren never learn of any war with their own eyes.” The exhibition was formally opened by the Government’s Tourism Promotion Group chairman Jim Boult, who says it is a ‘fantastic facility’.

The Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter has winched a 27 year old Christchurch man from the Queen Charlotte track in the Marlborough Sounds last week. The man, who was part of an organised group riding the track, took a heavy fall, suffering a suspected leg fracture. Other members of the group were able to carry the man to a nearby shelter on the ridgeline above Bay of Many Coves from where they called for help. Once the party was located, the on-board Intensive Care Paramedic assessed and stabilised the patient before he was winched on-board the helicopter and airlifted to Wairau Hospital for further treatment.

A group of women, children, and some men have walked from Christchurch to Blenheim, on their way to Wellington for a rally at Parliament tomorrow to protest the Government’s plans to join the trade agreement. Hikoi organiser Gen de Spa says the walk has been excellent, with a ‘great team effort’. “It’s doing what we wanted to do. There are effects happening, little ripple effects

Judges for the 2017 Cawthron Marlborough Environment Awards have plenty of variety ahead with entries ranging from brown beetle control in vineyards to sewage treatment in the Marlborough Sounds. There are 22 entries in this year’s awards, which celebrate and showcase businesses and community projects that are doing their bit to look after the environment. Environment Awards Trust chairman Peter Jerram says the range and high standard of entries is a sign of the growing awareness about where we live and how we want to look after our region. “It’s good to see the interest in the new Marine category as

Rural mail delivery boost By Glenise Dreaver Beachcomber Cruises Picton launched its latest Mail Cruise craft, the catamaran Matua, on Saturday. The ceremony was conducted on the Picton waterfront before a crowd of some 200 friends, family and representatives of the local maritime community. NZ Post Contracts manager Adrian Sexton came from Christchurch just for the day to celebrate. He says this service to the Sounds is a big part of NZ Post. Speakers paid tribute to the Beachcombers’ owners who have built the business from a zero base since arriving back from Australia only ten years ago. Tony and Margaret Crapper started with two boats and the fleet now numbers eight, including four Picton water taxis. The support the couple offers the local community, and the respect in which they are held is clear all through the day’s speeches. them as ‘inspiring people to be around’. The Picton School kapa haka group won all hearts with a stirring performance despite the cold wet conditions, though the rain held off for the launching ceremony. That followed a karakia, then the blessing ceremony and prayers from Te Atiawa kaumatua Joe Puketapu, Philip Sim, and Rev. Mabel Gemmell. Beachcomber’s marketing man-

ager and daughter of the owners, Jessica Jones, then donned the obligatory safety goggles to smash a bottle of champagne on the bow with a very resounding crash. The locally-built craft accommodates 110 passengers in comparison to the predecessor Tiri Cat, which seats 80. It also has increased space for the mail and supplies it delivers to Sounds residents on its daily run.

Mosquitoes

Cockroaches Houseflies

Ants

These blood-sucking winged annoyances populate more during the summer due to the improved breeding conditions. If your house is not properly insulated (using screens) against them, you might not know peace for the rest of the summer. Mosquitoes require water to breed as the larval stages are aquatic. Making sure that there is no still water inside or around your home can greatly reduce the population of mosquitoes. Having overgrown vegetation around your house will also create a home for them.

They may come in a variety of species but one thing they have in common is the ability to survive tough conditions. Cockroaches thrive in messes. If your house is full of clutter and food remnants, then there is no way you can escape infestation. The clutter provides a good place to hide and lay eggs while the food particles provide food. Cockroaches love small dark spaces with a lot of warmth. If you need extra evidence of an infestation check behind your refrigerator and stove.

Unless they sting, ants are mostly harmless. They will however get into your food and make it inedible. They mostly feed on dead decaying organic matter, but not strictly. Ants can nest in many dark warm places and have even been known to nest in cars and home printers. If you are battling ant invasions, then it’s best that you call in a professional pest controller who can spray in and around your home and garden areas.

These are very common insects during warm weather. By no chance can these insects be allowed to inhabit your home. This is because flies transport a lot of disease-causing microorganisms on their hair and vomit – yes, vomit. Houseflies vomit digestive materials on solid food to make it liquid before they can suck it in. Since houseflies feed indiscriminately, from dead decaying matter to sewers, and even wounds, they become exposed to a host of diseases which they then help spread.

When it comes to keeping your home free of insects there is an easy and effective solution - Ecomist. Ecomist is New Zealand-made and has been around since 1992. This automated insect controller uses an active ingredient that is safe for people and pets, created from the chrysanthemum extract, pyrethrum, making it 100 percent natural. It’s designed to be mounted high on the wall and set to release small amounts of natural pyrethrins at regular intervals to kill and repel insects. Its effectiveness at insect control is down to the science behind the product. It deals ef-

fectively with flies, mosquitoes, cockroaches and ants by releasing droplets that are small enough to stay in the air, then the airflow through your home allows the mist to spread to all areas, controlling pests no matter where they are. The pyrethrins are natural and break down in the sunlight, so no residue is left on floors or walls. Alternately, the dispenser can also be filled with an odour neutraliser and Ecomist supplies a number of different fragrances to choose from. PBA

Moving back in time Marlborough hosted Hollywood filmmakers two years ago to make ‘The Light Between Oceans’, which is on general release tomorrow. Cape Campbell farmer Sally Peter tells reporter Cathie Bell about what that was like. Tonight, Ward’s Flaxbourne Museum is hosting the premiere of Hollywood film ‘The Light Between Oceans’, as the start of a fundraising campaign for a new heritage centre for the South Marlborough township. Some of the film was shot at the Cape Campbell lighthouse, Marlborough’s only lighthouse, which is on the Peter family farm. Sally Peter, who is one of the volunteer team that operates the Flaxbourne Museum, says the film crew went to enormous lengths to make the film look authentic. ‘The Light Between Oceans’ is set after World War I in an isolated part of Western Australia, about a lighthouse keeper and his wife and the baby they rescue from a drifting boat. It was impressive what lengths the film crew went to, ensuring the authenticity of the movie, Sally says. She and her husband had meals out with the crew a few times. The baby was dressed in Isolation merino, produced by Sally. “That’s my shawl in the movie too.” Even the food was real - a local woman cooked it the day before filming, Sally says, and the crew brought authentic dishes round to pick it up. “They’d ring and ask for a fruit cake, or a stew, things like that.” Sally had to go as far as Nelson

to find a goat of the right colour that could be milked by actors, and Michael Fassbender had to learn how to milk a goat. “Then they haven’t used that in the film. I would have liked to have seen that.” That included taking out the modern light from the lighthouse and putting back the old lens and gas light into the building. Sally says the crew rang her and her husband to go out to look at the lighthouse all lit up when they filmed the night scenes. “It was almost emotional, seeing the old light going. “All the windows on the building, up and down, were glowing. They don’t do that now.” She hopes to be able to get the lens back from Wellington and to display it, with the lighthouse’s clockwork mechanism, when the new building opens. The lighthouse keeper had to wind up weights every two hours, and as those weights unwound, they would turn the light to keep it flashing out its warning to ships. That was why lighthouses had two keepers, to maintain that winding during the night. “That’s one thing that’s not realistic in the film - it wouldn’t have been just one man in an isolated spot like that.” The filming took four months. They had to take out their fences and move the sheep from where they would normally be kept.

“It was more work than we thought it would be.” The production crew brought mature trees from Wellington and planted them at the lighthouse to obscure one more modern building. One power pole had to be moved, at a cost of $10,000. They built a wharf for the filming at the base of the peninsula, which had to be removed after filming. Production crews work really hard, she says. There were long hours of filming. “They would be in character and do what they did, with everyone sitting around staring at them, it’s not easy.” The crew found it easy to film out at the lighthouse, Sally says. They filmed more than eight hours of material on the first day. “Usually there is something that stops filming, a car or a plane, or some noise, but not there.” They ended up with so much material, it was a nightmare to edit, she says. Stars Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander lived on site. That is unusual, Sally says. “Michael thought he’d last only one day there…When it came time to leave, he didn’t want to go.” A crowning note for Sally is that the two stars fell in love out at the lighthouse, and they are still together. “That’s pretty neat.”

Sally Peter holds a copy of the novel, ‘The Light Between Oceans’.

Defence Force returns The support of the community and authorities in Marlborough and the rest of the top of the South is bringing the Defence Force’s major military exercise Southern Katipo back in next year’s summer. Exercise director Lieutenant Colonel Martin Dransfield was in Blenheim yesterday and is meeting councils and community organisations in Marlborough, Tasman, and the West Coast over the next fortnight. Martin says exercises such as Southern Katipo have huge logistical requirements. “That is why we have already started to engage with the local communities to gain their support and establish key points of contact.” Last year’s Southern Katipo exercise was ‘a great success’, he says, and a lot of that is because of the ‘great community buy-in’ in the area. “That’s the reason we’re coming back here.” The exercise areas will essentially be the same as those used in SK15 but will extend south to Greymouth in the west and Kaikoura in the east. Southern Katipo aims to test and evaluate the NZDF’s ability to plan and conduct joint operations such as providing humanitarian assistance

Weather data collected at the Blenheim Meteorological station in the Grovetown Park campus of the Marlborough Research Centre shows October’s rainfall was 104 per cent of the long-term average for October of 56.6 mm (19302015). and responding to requests for assistance in managing a security situation in the south-west Pacific region. Held every two years, Southern Katipo involves naval, land and air assets and more than 2000 personnel from New Zealand and several defence partners including Australia, France, the United States, Fiji, Papua New Guinea and Tonga. Singapore and Malaysia have been invited to participate in 2017, increasing the

number of international participants from 9 to 11. New Zealand organisations supporting the exercise include the New Zealand Customs Service, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, New Zealand Police, Ministry for Primary Industries, New Zealand Transport Authority, Immigration New Zealand, Ministry of Health, District Health Boards, Red Cross and St John New Zealand.

scientist Rob Agnew, who compiles the data, says Marlborough was very fortunate to receive average rainfall during October. “Regular rainfall during October was sufficient to replenish moisture in the topsoil on a number of occasions. Topsoil moisture was 33.4 per cent on 1 October and 31.5 per cent on 31 October 2016. “In contrast, with very low rainfall in October last year, moisture in the topsoil fell from 34.1 per cent on 1 October to 19.2 per cent on 31 October 2015.”

Diabetes is diagnosed when a person has too much glucose (sugar) in the blood. This happens because the pancreas cannot make enough insulin. There are a number of things you can do to help prevent diabetes. Talk to your local GP or diabetes specialist.

Type 1 diabetes cannot be prevented but it can be managed through a combination of medication, healthy food choices and exercise. It is an ‘auto-immune’ condition. Basically the body sets up an attack against the cells within it that make insulin. These cells are called beta cells and are isolated in the pancreas. The result is that the body does not produce any insulin (or very little). Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes. For many people (but not all) it can be prevented through following a healthy lifestyle. While type 2 diabetes cannot be cured, it can be managed and people with type 2 diabetes can and do live active and healthy lives.

In type 2 diabetes, either the body doesn’t produce enough insulin, or the cells in the body don’t recognise the insulin that is present. The end result is the same: high levels of glucose in your blood. For many people (but not all) type 2 diabetes can be prevented by making healthy food choices and staying active. Gest at iona l d iabetes occurs when a pregnant woman has high levels of glucose in her blood. High blood glucose is caused because the mother can’t produce enough insulin (a pregnant woman’s insulin needs are two to three times that of normal). There are two reasons why the mother needs more

insulin: Because pregnancy causes certain types of hormones (that are made by the placenta) to be released. These hormones make it harder for insulin to do its job. Because the growth demands of the foetus (developing baby) increases the mother’s need for insulin. Unlike type 1 and type 2 diabetes, gestational diabetes is only temporary and usually disappears after pregnancy. However, a woman who has had gestational diabetes has an increased risk (50-60 per cent) of developing type 2 diabetes in the future; therefore they should be tested for type 2 diabetes each year.

Stock car teams are in bound By Celeste Alexander This Saturday there will be a clashing of metal as Eastern States Speedway hosts the Jacks Tyres Eve of Destruction stock car teams racing. Three out-of-town stock car teams will be making the journey to Blenheim where they will compete against the home team, the ESS Titans. The field will consist of two teams from Palmerston North, the KBs Cowboys and the Indians, as well as the Canterbury Crushers. This year’s event will consist of more action packed racing with six races set in the programme, giving each team plenty of opportunity to flex their muscles. It will be a round robin style race programme where each team has a race against one another, then a run off for third and fourth places. The top teams then will go into the finals to battle it out for first and second. The Titans team has some new members this year and is sponsored Closing date by White Ribbon, Stop Family checked: Violence. The team consists of Gavin Marshall (captain), Dallas Reeves, revisions: 1

Harley Robb, Dylan Robb, Troy Currie, Scott Alexander (reserve car) and Grant Tompson (reserve driver). Gavin is one of the team’s original drivers, as is Scott who has returned to speedway after a few seasons off. Each of the other team members have team racing experience and are looking forward to the weekend, stock car rep Carla Marshall says.

“This year is the 10th anniversary of Palmerston North teams coming here for teams racing so we are all looking forward to some good racing and friendly rivalry. “Unfortunately Nelson’s Tasman Thunder team has pulled out but with four stock car teams still taking part there will be plenty of banging and crashing,” she laughs.

Motocross team excels at NZ Vets Champs The 2016 NZ Veteran and Women’s motocross championship was held recently in Mosgiel with Marlborough Motorcycle Club riders proving mud was no barrier. The weather was so severe that racing was called off on Saturday after the second round. Waking up on Sunday morning to a minus four degree frost, the organisers of the event were all on site at 5.30am, harrowing and hoeing the track to pristine conditions which paid off by seeing some very competitive racing. Moston Wadsworth continued his winning streak with four 1sts and one 2nd and went on to be crowned the NZ Vets Overall Champ 2016 for his age group. Mark Terry showed fantastic

form with five 3rds to finish 3rd overall. Mike Holland also rode exceeding well in the conditions to finish 7th overall. Steve Lange, the only Marlburian to compete in two classes, proved hard work and training pays off, with an overall 1st and 2nd, respectively. Bjorn Cowdry, riding a 125 cc bike and competing at his first Vet Champs, ended up with a very credible 2nd overall. And in the same class, Ant Hughes proved his worth at his first Vet Champs, finishing 4th overall. In the Senior Support, Jackson Simmons kept the Marlburians on the podium with an overall 3rd placing. Adrian Orchard and Keith Purdon were riding well but unfortunately did not finish the event.

The Marlborough Senior rep team added a second trophy for the season by defeating Nelson in the Newman Shield challenge match on Sunday. Batting first on Nelson’s Saxton Oval Marlborough made 150 all out from 45 overs with main contributions from Rikki Bovey (40), Harry MacDonald (34) and Matthew Stretch (27). In reply Nelson fell well short on a slow pitch all out for 99. Bovey completed an outstanding game with 5 wickets for 13 runs from 4.2 overs. The victory means that Marlborough will now defend the shield in Blenheim later in the season. Local club cricket was washed out on Saturday.

Tasman brave in defeat

www.EasternStatesSpeedway.NET.nz

The Mitre 10 Rugby Cup final clash between the Tasman Makos and Canterbury showed why Canterbury have won thirteen NPC titles. The final score line of 43-27 proved Canterbury to be all class and the Tasman Makos brave in defeat. The only time Tasman Makos got close to Canterbury was early in the first half when the Canterbury wing Nathan Earle, an Englishman was sinbinned for 10 minutes. During this period the Tasman Makos got to within a point of Canterbury, with two penalties to Marty Banks and a try to Shannon Frizell. The writing was on the wall early when Canterbury scored a try after Marty Banks had a kick charged down by Canterbury lock David McDuling, who waltzed over to score forty seconds after kick off. Canterbury quickly increased the lead by 12-0, winger Nathan Earle scoring in the sixth minute. Apart from Canterbury’s early try blitz the Tasman Makos had Canterbury defending for large periods in their own half, but the Canterbury defence held fast. With the Makos making too many unforced errors and at times bad decision making, Canterbury would have been happy with their half time lead 22-13. The last act of the first half saw Tasman lock Alex Ainley getting sinbinned on the

half time whistle for a dangerous tackle. The second half started with Tasman only having 14 players for the first 10 minutes. Canterbury made them pay adding more points. With Makos back to full strength in the 50th minute, halfback Billy Guyton scored followed by replacement hooker Jesse MacDonald who scored in the 63rd minute (score 36-27 to Canterbury). Unfortunately for the Makos, Canterbury first five eight and man of the match Richie Mo’unga, had scored a brilliant individual try three minutes earlier, his second try of the match. The rest of the second half belonged to Canterbury, dominating lineouts and turnovers. The Canterbury defence lead by locks McDuling and Bird was outstanding, with the Tasman Makos brave in defeat never giving up. But by the end of the game Canterbury’s class prevailed with Tasman Makos making costly mistakes at crucial moments in the game. Score board: Canterbury 43 (Richie Mo’unga 2, Dave McDuling, Nathan Earle, Rob Thompson, Billy Harmon tries, Jordie Barrett 5 con, pen) Tasman 27 (Shannon Frizell, Billy Guyton, Jesse MacDonald tries, Marty Banks 3 con, 2 pen).
