Story and photo by Cathie Bell Donations from three gaming trusts totalling $240,000 will finish the ASB Theatre’s kitchen. Theatre trust chairman Kevin Moseley says the kitchen should be in action next year, and the trust is continuing to chase funding, with applications in to two government funds. The theatre holds its 100th show since opening this year. Continued on page 2 Terry Sloan on behalf of the Air Rescue and Community Association, Nicki Muaror from the Lion Foundation, and Scott Simmiss from the Pelorus Trust in front of the ASB Theatre’s kitchen area, which the three trusts are donating towards.

Theatre kitchen wins more money from trusts Continued from page 1 Kevin showed Scott Simmiss from the Pelorus Trust, Nicki Muaror from Lion Foundation, and Terry Sloan on behalf of Air Rescue and Community Association around the theatre yesterday. The Pelorus Trust has donated $100,000, the Air Rescue and Community Services Foundation $100,000, and the Lion Foundation $40,000 specifically for the kitchen, not as a general theatre donation. In August PAK’nSAVE Blenheim announced it would provide the funding to enable the kitchen to be fitted out with the appliances and equipment necessary for professional caterers to use the facility.

Scott says the Pelorus Trust has been involved since the start of the project, saying it is a ‘brilliant community facility’. “A lot of times, these things don’t get off the ground, so it’s nice to see one getting completed.” Nicki says her organisation is keen to be involved because of the effect the theatre is having on the community. “We’re very much keeping the funds local. The cross section of activities available for everyone in the region, it’s great.” Terry says the chief executive of the Air Rescue and Community Services Foundation was unable to attend yesterday, but as owner of

one of its two venues, he says it is fantastic the foundation’s trustees are backing a local project. The kitchen is available for anyone using the theatre to use and is not tied to any particular caterer. Theatre general manager Andrew Scott says so many organisations and people have been involved in the project, it would have been wrong to have an exclusive catering contract. “It gives people choice as well.” Kevin says the theatre trust wanted to ensure it will have a commercial kitchen available for hire without strings attached. “We wanted to set it up in a way that means you can bring in your own masterchef or get your family

to do your catering – whatever suits your budget. The Whitehaven Wine Room at the theatre can handle functions of up to 300 people and is suitable for formal events like dinners and weddings and other social functions. Kevin says there’s still more money to raise but he hopes the kitchen will be in action by next year. “The Theatre Trust is still working hard on the fundraising. Even though the theatre is open now, we are still on the trail of sponsors and donors. The community has been superb in its support and, if anything, that’s grown since the doors opened and everyone can see what a wonderful theatre we have here.

Model railway losing its landscaping Story and photo by Cathie Bell Someone has been taking the new plantings along the extended model railway track at Brayshaw Park and the Modellers’ Association is not happy at seeing its hardearned money disappearing. Association member Mark Taylor says the group has spent about $900 on plants and someone has come more than once to take them. “They might think it’s just council plantings, but they’re not… we are paying for those plants from our hard-earned money and it’s really disappointing.” The track extension was completed just last week and has all been done by volunteers, Mark says.

It will be opening soon. The train charges are kept low and the club only makes ‘a few hundreds’ from its rides, unlike some clubs elsewhere that make thousands of dollars each weekend, he says. It can’t afford to keep replacing the plants and Mark say it is hard enough to get the plants to grow in the hard ground by the track. “When they do get growing, it will look nice…It’s disappointing that someone interested in gardening will desecrate someone else’s garden to get the plants.” The thefts have been reported to the police, Mark says. A rat-ical change

Winery concert indoors Blenheim will host the first-ever A Taste Of The Winery Tour at the ASB Theatre in Marlborough on Valentines Day, 14th February next year, adding something a little extra and special to The Winery Tour 2017. Along with the stellar artist line up of Brooke Fraser, Bic Runga and Benny Tipene, A Taste of the Winery Tour will also offer a delicious tasting menu of local cuisine and wine from the Marlborough region, making for a night that promises to be full of great NZ food, wine and music.

Next phase for Picton pest free soon to start Story and photo by Celeste Alexander A goal to create a predator free ‘halo’ of around 2000 hectares around Kaipupu, Picton and Waikawa is well underway thanks to the efforts of volunteer group Picton Dawn Chorus. The group has completed phase one of setting out 150 traps every 100 metres along walking tracks in the Victoria Domain and now plans to start pushing for phase two, targeting the urban areas in Picton and Waikawa. Project manager Siobain Browning says early next year the group is aiming to have rat traps in every fifth garden. “Residents will be able to trap in their own gardens. That should be enough to clear out rats and increase the bird life within the urban area. “Once that is established we can then move onto phase three which is focusing on the predator control of the Wedge on the other side of Kaipupu Point,” she says. To be able to push ahead with plans Siobain says the Picton Dawn Chorus group needs to attract more volunteers to help with the maintenance and resetting of traps and other tasks. “We have volunteers who have designated areas that they check on a rostered weekly basis. “Currently we have 60 on the books but around 25 are active so please, if anyone is interested in helping us please make contact. Particularly if you are an off track walker and don’t mind heading into bush areas,” she says. The Sun met with Siobain and

volunteer Philip Middlemiss as they checked rat traps along a public walkway near Shelley Beach yesterday. Philip and his wife moved to Picton from Christchurch exactly one year ago to retire. He was looking for volunteer work and joined the Picton Dawn Chorus group. “For health reasons I needed to be walking 4km per day so this really was perfect. “I have always been keen on New Zealand becoming pest free and found this to be worthwhile. Plus, it would be sad to see a decline in the beautiful birds that are around my house because of predators,” he says. Philip’s job is to walk along the trap line which has traps set every 100m. He checks each trap wearing gloves to prevent his scent from deterring the rats and makes notes on the location and if anything was caught. If a rat has been caught he simply tips it out without having to touch it and resets the trap using a squeeze bottle containing peanut butter. He says he would expect one or two rats to be found in the 4.5km round trip of the track he makes. One particular trap had been opened and reset using a piece of sandwich which Siobain does not recommend. “Sometimes we come across traps that have been kicked over, the tags taken off or people have perhaps tried to help by resetting it with their own food. We appreciate that people want to help but we

Clued Up Kids value Primary school students participating in Marlborough Clued Up Kids this year will come out of the programme armed with a new set of safety skills to use in the real world. Organised by a collaboration of likeminded organisations, the programme is designed to give year 5 and 6 students from across Marlborough the opportunity to experience real-life emergency situations in a safe environment. Eight scenarios are set up for the programme, covering dog safety, rail safety, quad bike safety, cycle safety, home safety, fire safety, water safety, and emergency first aid. They are designed to teach the students the basic skills needed to keep themselves safe in each situation, and to know when and how to call for emergency help. Toby Witehira attended Clued-Up Kids in 2014, and recalls learning a range of valuable lessons. “I remember that in an earthquake you need a food kit and a container of water [and] to

Marlborough’s project is one of 14 tourism infrastructure projects around the country to get $3.05 million in government co-funding support through the Regional Mid-sized Tourism Facilities Grant Fund, Associate Tourism Minister Paula Bennett says. She says a number of high quality proposals for infrastructure projects have been funded to help ensure tourists have a safe and enjoyable experience while visiting some of our most popular spots.

Clued-Up Kids was a massive learning curve for Emily Hayles, who completed the programme in 2013. “I think every kid should go through it. You learn how to ride a bike and stay safe on the road, and how to ring 111 in any emergency.” The programme is managed by the Marlborough Child Safety Group and supported by the, Marlborough District Council, New Zealand Police, New Zealand Fire Service, New Zealand Red Cross, Nelson Marlborough District Health Board, Maataa Waka Animal Control, Marlborough Civil Defence, AgSafe Training Ltd, Kiwirail and the Baden Powell Scout Guild It runs from November 7 until November 11 at Brayshaw Park.

New memorial wall to be unveiled By Cathie Bell Friday’s Armstice Day service will be a special one, occurring during the commemoration of 100 years since World War I battles, but in Marlborough, it will be even more special as the new memorial wall will be unveiled. Marlborough Returned Services’ Association president Ross Cooke says the memorial clock tower in Seymour Square is Marlborough’s war memorial and the new wall doesn’t change that. However, the clock tower, which houses the Marlborough roll of honour listing those men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice, is not accessible to many people because of its short stairs. The issue was raised with the RSA and a new memorial wall

was proposed. After community fundraising, the new and accessible wall is ready to be unveiled. It has given the RSA a chance to correct errors in names on the original roll of honour and to add those who missed out on being included in the clock tower roll. There are now 676 names on the Marlborough roll of honour, Ross says. “Not in my living lifetime, and according to a lot of others, have we unveiled a memorial wall like this in Marlborough, a memorial to all the people who made the supreme sacrifice.” Ross says all RSA members, serving personnel, their families, and the public are welcome at the Armistice Day service, which will be held at the Blenheim War Memorial Clock Tower at 11.00

am on Friday, 11 November. This 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month is the symbolic moment chosen to remember the cease to hostilities on the Western Front in 1918. The traditional wreath of red poppies will be laid at the war memorial, a reminder of the wild poppies that grew across the fields of Flanders where so many Allied troops lost their lives in the First World War. Marlborough mayor John Leggett will welcome guests to the service and deliver a short address. At this service, the RSA is also marking the official Corps Day for the Royal New Zealand Chaplain’s Department, remembering the 10 chaplains whose lives were lost as a result of their military service.

After the service, at 11.45am, the new Memorial Wall at the Clubs of Marlborough will be unveiled by former Mayor Alistair Sowman and immediate past president of the Marlborough RSA John Forrest who will each make a brief speech. In the event of wet weather the service will be held at the Main Hall, Clubs of Marlborough.

Table makes its way back The table tennis table which was smashed by vandals in July has been replaced by a new one. The Mitchell Sport pop-up park in Wynen Street is in a vacant site where the Mitchell Sport store used to be before it moved to Scott Street. The site has been covered with artificial

grass and is now an urban play space for children, with a basketball hoop and permanent table tennis table installed and a container of sports gear is available all day for kids to use. The council said in July that fixing the damage at the urban play space would cost at least $2000.

Rock star economy? Dear Ed, I watched TV3’s breakfast show with some opinionated host Paul Henry rabbiting on with a money guru Paul Bloxham, HSBC’s chief economist for Australia and New Zealand about the economy booming. Bloxham in 2014 said NZ had a rock star economy. But when I google into NZ’s debt clock it showed a debt of $86 billion. It changes as you watch. I timed it for just over a minute, i.e. just 60 seconds. In that 60 seconds it went from $86,608,292, 852 to $86,608,299, 352. that was a rise of $7000 in 60 seconds. In the few minutes it took to write these few lines, it jumped another $67,103. What is the definition of a rockstar economy? Is it heavily in debt and spending lavishly as though there’s no tomorrow? “Dollar Dummy”

Matthew Naish Blenheim I’m going to study management at Victoria University in Wellington.

Dear Ed, Am I the only voter in Blenheim who was surprised that the tradition of appointing the highest polling councillor to the position of Deputy Mayor has been defenestrated? Councillor Jamie Arbuckle was the highest polling councillor and this voter, for one, therefore expected him to have been made Deputy Mayor. Could it be that this position was denied to Mr Arbuckle because he is not part of the cosy “A” team within Council and is seen as a troublemaker by reason of being too honest and forthright? I hope I am wrong but it seems at this point in time that Washington DC is perhaps not the only swamp that needs draining. Trumptastic

Petrol prices Dear Ed, I’m confused about petrol prices. At picton petrol is 6 cents less than Blenheim. Why? Go to the North Island and petrol in an inland town like Levin may be 20 cents less than Wellington or Blenheim. Why? But I’m not confused about the high price of petrol in terms of government’s contribution to inflating it. When you last bought petrol, 67.284 cents per litre was collected by the government as fuel excise (excluding GST). Motorists are charged GST on the petrol excise, which amounts to a tax on a tax. The AA has called for the GST to be removed - a move that would reduce prices by 10 cents per litre. Don Coyote

Ed notes: It has not been the practice for the highest polling Blenheim Ward candidate to become deputy mayor for some time.

Chance visit leads to first novel Story and photo by Celeste Alexander Nearly 15 years ago Blenheim couple Walter and Dot Scott spent an Easter weekend in Charleston on the West Coast, an experience that sparked an idea for a historical novel - Web of Gold. It’s set in Charleston in the 1960s at the height of the gold rush. Dot describes it as being a primitive place where hastily erected tents and tiny cottages are scattered throughout the roughly felled bush. Hopeful miners swarm there in search of a quick fortune. One of the novel’s main characters is Doctor Arthur Jones who arrives from England with his wife and two daughters. The stor y involves plenty of drama as love, stolen gold and fire rock the lives of the men and women of Charleston. Over the years which followed, Dot returned to Charleston a number of times to carry out re-

search to form the basis of the story. She says it’s been “quite a journey” which was initiated during their first stay in the town that was founded as a gold mining town after a major gold rush in the late 1860s. “I got hooked on the place. There was so much history and I started thinking about what it would be like for a doctor’s wife going from high living standards to living in a tent and being called by your Christian name. “I revisited Charleston a number of times but then Walter and I went into business with Queen Street Fine Arts. Three years later I got more serious about it,” she says. D ot went ba ck t o Charleston and gathered research and maps from places such as the Westport Citizens Advice Bureau and the library. She also met a woman who was a seventh generation to those mining during the gold rush and she provided Dot with valuable information and details.

Shop co-ordinator Heather Cooper says the shop’s last day in Charles Street is November 15, and it re-opens in the new Maxwell Road site on November 22. The move is because the Charles Street shop is not big enough and it is shifting to a larger location. “There’s been a change in shop. We started as a clothing shop, but are now expanding into homeware and small furniture, manchester and all sorts of things.”

The Red Cross shop is moving into the old Christian bookshop and wool store site at 14 Maxwell Road, Heather says. “It’s a lovely shop, with a fantastic café on one side and a fantastic bits and pieces shop on the other.” It’s trying to keep central and make the most of foot traffic in town, she says. “There is definitely more foot traffic there.” Staff are all excited about the move, Heather says, and they are looking for more donations of ‘all sorts of things, we have more space to fill’. They would also like some more volunteers too, she says. “We’d love to have some Saturday people who could do four hours once a

week.” The store is also taking ‘donation stations’ out in the community, Heather says. These are large cardboard boxes for people to pop their donations into, and the Red Cross has them in Seddon at the Supervalue, one at the Z service station in Springlands and Picton, and at the Red Cross service centre at Redwood Street, and donations can always be dropped off at the store, she says. “We also have four moveable ones so if any businesses have staff who want one in their staff room, staff can contact us and we’re happy to pop one in for whatever time they want. People can bring stuff into work and pop it into the Red Cross store co-ordinator Heather Cooper, inside donation box.” the Charles Street shop before its move.

More money to fight Molesworth pines The Government is putting more money to control the spread of wilding pines in the Molesworth, two ministers have announced. Primary Industries Minister Nathan Guy and Conservation Minister Maggie Barry say work to control the spread of wildings in the Molesworth area of Marlborough and the Amuri block in North Canterbury will receive an additional $730,000 in Crown funding. Maggie says both areas are examples of the precious high country landscapes most at threat from the uncontrolled spread of wilding conifers which choke natural habitat and farmland. “They now cover more than 1.8 million hectares of land and are advancing at a rate of five per cent a year. Once established, wildings are extremely difficult to eradicate, with the cost rising exponentially. “One or two trees now can turn into a dense forest within 15-20 years if trees aren’t removed before they produce seeds. “As a Government, we commit-

ted an additional $16 million to wilding control over the next four years in Budget 2016 because we recognise the threat they pose not only to our nature but also to the primary sector economy.” The new funding for Molesworth and Amuri will be supported by significant existing investment from LandCorp, the Department of Conservation, landowners and local government, making a total of more than $1 million. In Amuri, work will be carried out over 298,000 hectares, including throughout the St James Station, which is a significant seed source for the growing Molesworth infestation. In Molesworth itself, the money will expand efforts to contain the further spread of wildings over 231,000 hectares. Nathan says these two projects will help protect iconic landscapes, farmland and rare plants which are only found in those areas. Controlling the spread will also help conserve precious water in those catchments.

Watching the Sounds On his first day in charge as Marlborough’s harbourmaster, Luke Grogan took time out to talk to Glenise Dreaver.

Luke was deputy to longtime harbourmaster Alex van Wijngaarden since 2013, and is very familiar with the area. As a young fisherman he sometimes worked out of Picton. He also had several stints on the Interislander. Seafaring wasn’t his first choice. That was studying for a business degree, but university proved not for him at that stage so he went fishing. “It’s a great life for a young man, doing stuff, being challenged.” Then, overhearing two crewmates discussing training opportunities for merchant seafaring, he thought it sounded like a good idea. Luke applied for the New Zealand Maritime School. “For a Master’s ticket. It offers unlimited opportunities. Command of container ships, superyachts, cruise ships ...” But first comes three years as a cadet. “Sometimes you’re paid, if you’re lucky.” (And to get

to master mariner takes, he says, nine years.) “I was fortunate to be picked up by the Interislander line.” The lure of South East Asia, China and Singapore, with the seafaring challenges in the offshore oil and gas industry was strong though. “I was a second mate and chief on ships that were towing rigs, running anchors and supplying offshore platforms. “That takes very precise manoeuvring. You’re driving the boat all the time. Very good experience.” It takes strong nerves too and piracy could be an issue. He’s unlikely to forget one incident in the Indonesian archipelago. “The Kuala Lumpur Piracy Centre warned us there had just been an attack on a vessel exactly like ours, right in the area we were heading into.” It was dark and he was officer on watch. Lookouts were positioned, board-

ing points lit up, fire hoses broken out. “The theory is the hoses stop them boarding. It’s a nice theory but I wasn’t too keen to test it.”

“Then an Indonesian crewman came up to me. ‘Chief mate, don’t worry. The main pirate is my cousin and I’ve told him there’s nothing of value aboard” It looked as if they might have to. “We picked up suspicious targets heading towards us on the radar. I was also picking up a lot of radio chatter, but it was in Indonesian. “Then an Indonesian crewman came up to me. ‘Chief mate, don’t worry. The main pirate is my cousin and I’ve told him there’s nothing of value aboard’.” Terrifying? Luke agrees,

saying seafaring can offer some moments of intense terror. A few years later it was home to New Zealand, again working on the ferries before the lure of the high wages and excellent training in the latest technology drew him to the Australian coast. “I worked on larger more technical vessels, drill ships, dive support vessels and deep sea construction ships.” The category five cyclone that struck in the Indian Ocean off the west coast also provided added experience. “There’s a certain sense of pride in bringing a vessel back from something like that with no loss of life and nothing vital broken. “But I did wonder at the time if there was a better way to earn a living...” Another ‘showstopper’ was an engine room fire. They all mustered on deck. “But six people were missing.“

Crew kitted up to search. “They found them lying reading on their beds, smoke rising through the floorboards and bells going off all over the place. They thought it was a false alarm. Unbelievable. I did have a word or two to them about that. ” Amongst all this there were years of freelancing and many other roles, including the salvage on the Rena and also working in the North Sea out of the oil centre of Aberdeen. He says though, ‘as you get older you want more stability’. He’d met Brenna, and the couple decided it was time to start a family. A step towards this new sort of life included more maritime study and a degree in geography and environmental studies. Luke brings that obvious passion for the environment to his new role. “And it’s good to have some influence on the way we collectively run a safe harbour.”

Lamp post bites the dust One of the lamp posts to light the new pedestrian crossings on Hutcheson Street has been hit by a truck a couple of weeks after being installed, and now Marlborough Roads is to re-locate the light. The post was on a decided lean on Monday at 9.30am and was removed yesterday. It is understood a truck mis-judged how much its turning circle was going to take and it hit the post. It is likely the post will be put at the back of the footpath, not near the road. Marlborough Roads highway manager Frank Porter says Marlborough Roads is currently reviewing the incident where a lighting pole near two new pedestrian crossing was damaged. The new lamp-post, already on a lean. The lighting pole, along with the two pedestrian crossings, was installed mid-October independent traffic safety engineer following to improve safe pedestrian access across safety audit works. Hutcheson Road to Blenheim School and the “Marlborough Roads’ review will consider ASB Theatre Marlborough, he says. whether any changes need to be made to the “The improvements were designed by an design.”

Come, enjoy and support a great event The sky above Blenheim will soon be lit up with a splendour of colour as the Lights over Marlborough Fireworks Extravaganza ignites this Saturday evening. This hugely anticipated annual event is the main fundraiser for Whitney Street School, raising tens of thousands of dollars every year. Held at the Marlborough A&P Showgrounds, it is a fun event that the whole family can enjoy. The gates open at 6pm and the event kicks off with live entertainment, games, stalls, delicious food and a number of activities for all ages to enjoy. Entertaining the crowd will be local bands as well as

the school Kapa Haka group. “Come along, grab a coffee and something yummy to eat and find yourself somewhere to sit. Then send the kids off to bounce, play and wear themselves out before the fireworks display,” organisers says. Stalls will include hot chips and donuts, a barbecue, nachos, coffee, glowsticks, mystery bottle, silent auction and the ever popular chocolate wheel. This year will also be the introduction of the popular lucky key game where people purchase a key for $5, and if your key opens the locked cabinet you will win a brand new laptop computer.

This computer is just one of many incredible items that will be on offer, thanks to the amazing generosity of businesses and supporters who pledge their support. Whitney Street School students have been working hard alongside the organising committee to pull together an impressive assortment of donated items and prizes from generous supporting businesses. “We, the families and staff of Whitney Whitney Street School can not even begin to express our gratitude to our supporters of this year’s Lights Over Marlborough.”

Truffles set to roll in Ways to help your pet during fireworks • If possible take pets somewhere where there won’t be loud fireworks. • Act camly. Pets pick up strongly on our emotions so act calm and happy and don’t fuss over your pet too much. • Take active dogs for a big walk before the fireworks begin. If you tire them out it can help them to relax. • Make a safe space for your pet in the house. Find a room that is relatively quiet and put their bed in there, with their blanket, some food and water. If your pet usually sleeps outside, consider bringing them inside for

the night. • Play music or put on the television. • Have your pet’s favourite toys and chewy treats to keep them entertained and distracted. • If your pet looks distressed or anxious, stay with them but still act calmly and don’t fuss too much. • If you have had fireworks on your property ensure you clean up thoroughly before your pets go back outside as they can be harmful for them.

By Celeste Alexander Bohally Intermediate is gearing up for its major annual fundraiser that will see hundreds of pairs of hands involved. Next Wednesday parents and students will be hand-rolling 70,000 truffles over two and a half days. This will be an extra10,000 on top of what is normally produced. The truffles are bagged by the dozen and pre-sold by students who go door knocking and the remainder then go to be sold at the Mistletoe Market in Blenheim.

Organisers say the decision to make more came after they ran out last year and were not able to be sold at the market. “We want to make it so that people can still come and buy their truffles if they miss out on the pre-sales,” a spokesperson says. The hand-rolling of truffles will be carried out by around 70 parents and 300 children. Last year alone it brought in around $18,000. Two flavours are made including one gluten free option sold for $5 per bag or $7 for gluten free.

Council backtracks on rubbish bag charges By Cathie Bell The Marlborough District Council is reversing its decision to charge people who bring filled council rubbish bags to the new waste sorting centre. The council announced yesterday that rubbish in council-supplied bags included in any load brought to the new waste sorting centre will be taken into account when each customer’s overall dumping charge is calculated. Dumping fees at the new transfer station are going to be calculated by weight, not the size of the load, with vehicles going over a weighbridge to ensure charges are accurate. Initially, that was going to mean that all rubbish, including anything in council bags

arriving as part of a load, would incur a charge. However, the council has decided that when people bring council rubbish bags mixed into their load, a standard deduction will be made, based on the number of bags and the average weight of a full council kerbside rubbish bag – about six kilograms. Council solid waste manager Alec McNeil says changes have been made to the weighbridge’s software to enable the bags to be accounted for, which has made the difference. “We didn’t think we could change it, but it can.” The new waste sorting facility is open to the public to use on Monday.

Energy trusts’ highpowered meeting Energy and Resources Minister Simon Bridges is expected to to be keynote speaker tomorrow morning at the Energy Trusts of New Zealand spring conference at the ASB Theatre in Blenheim. The conference theme is ‘the future was yesterday’ and has a focus on sustainability. As well as the minister, Green party coleader James Shaw is to speak. Marlborough has its own power trust - the Marlborough Electric Power Trust - which owns 100 per cent of lines company Marlborough Lines on behalf of the power users of Marlborough. The conference is to visit Marlborough

Lines’ newest investment, Yealands Winery in Seddon, tomorrow afternoon for a tour and for its conference dinner.

Head boy following brothers’ lead By Cathie Bell Next year’s head boy at Marlborough Boys’ College Seth Robinson is following in his older brothers’ footsteps – all three were prefects. Seth says being selected came as a surprise. When it was announced at the school’s prizegiving last week, he was sitting in the crowd, and ‘didn’t have a clue, really’, he says. There had been six candidates for the role, and they had group interviews and then one on their own with

senior college staff. Seth hopes to lead a good team of prefects next year, and to make sure everyone does their job well. “I don’t really have a goal as such, but I’m going to start thinking of one. “Leading the team is a big thing for me.” He has a mixture of sporting and cultural achievements, playing rugby in the second XV this year and taking part in the school production ‘Hairspray’. “I think within the school, I’m respected and ap-

proachable. That’s what’s essential with a leader, to be approachable…I treat everyone as if they’re equal.” Seth is spending the next couple of weeks studying for exams, and then hopes to have a bit of downtime in the holidays as well as a holiday job to make some money. “He usually gets some work at his father Phil’s company, Robinson Construction. “Then I’ll get into the job next year.”

Hunter’s Garden Café With a view of mountains, lush gardens and surrounding vineyards it’s no wonder that Hunter’s Garden Café is relished by those who visit. Nestled between Hunter’s entrance and the cellar door, the café has recently reopened for the summer season and is all set to welcome locals and visitors. The café is in its third year since it was relaunched with a simple yet clever concept of serving tasting platters and nibbles along with a selection of wines to sample. Owner Jane Hunter says people are really enjoying the comfortable space where they don’t feel rushed and can enjoy some light meals or simply treat themselves to a coffee and muffin. “It has a lovely atmosphere inside and out with plenty of space for families to come with their children, groups to get together and even celebrations,” she says. The cafe has a mouth watering selection of platters to choose from that are great to share, and can be plated for larger groups. They include: • Cheese • Mixed meats • Hot smoked King Salmon • Children’s option The platters have been designed to be light, full of flavour and perfect alongside a glass of Hunter’s wine. For people seeking something a little more filling there are a a number of other tasty dishes to choose from, from mini pizzas and the Hunter’s salad, through to paninis and a tasty pie. “We are currently working on a Hunter’s pie so watch this space,” Jane says. New to the menu this year is the addition

of German sausage products. The Swiss Brat sausage served with coleslaw and fries is looking to be a popular choice for diners as well as the Fleisch Kase, which translates as ‘meat cheese’. This dish has two steak shaped pieces of pork sausage that look like swiss cheese and are also served with coleslaw, fries, mustard and tomato sauce. What make these dishes appealing is the texture, staff member Sabine Lux says. “The sausage meat is not mixed with flour or other ingredients which make them light and flavoursome. They are also gluten free,” she says. To finish lunch on a sweet note there is the decadent chocolate brownie and ice-cream with a selection of toppings, or go for the warmer and equally tempting option of the Hunter’s Affogato. Of course any dining experience at Hunter’s Garden Café is not complete without the Hunter’s Wine Flight. Select three wines from the list provided and sample what Hunter’s does best winemaking!

Titans reign on home track Story and photo by Celeste Alexander The Eastern States Titans stock car team managed to plough through three visiting teams to take out first place at the Jacks Tyres Eve of Destruction Stock Car teams race on Saturday night. The Titans, made up of drivers Gavin Marshall, Scott Alexander, Dallas Reeves, Harley Robb, Dylan Robb and Troy Currie, lost their first race against the KBs Cowboys but remained positive. Repairs to their cars were made and a new strategy was put in place. In their second race against the KBs Indians, the Titans won, put-

ting them second place in points behind the Cowboys by (330-175). This put both teams in a run off for first and second place. The Cowboys took the lead for the first half of the race until the lead car blew a gear box and the second runner was blocked. Titans drivers Troy Currie and Scott Alexander raced on to clinch first and second place in the race, placing the Titans ahead in points and ultimately winning the event. Titans manager Carla Marshall says the team did extremely well. “They are a new team and managed to work well together. Everyone helped one another out and had each others backs out on

the track which was awesome to see.” Behind the Titans and Cowboys were in third place the KBs Indians and in fourth the Canterbury Crushers. The ferocity and skill of the Palmerston North teams, the KBs Cowboys and Indians, put the pressure on both the Titans and the Canterbury Crushers and made for exciting racing. There was plenty of hard hits being delivered, strategic blocking and speed from the lead runners, as well as a spectacular roll over of KBs Indians 67v driver Nathan Black. It was Nathan’s first time racing

Cricket final coming Wairau Valley will meet Renwick in this Saturday’s SBS Senior grade 50 over final following a close finish to the round robin part of the competition last weekend. Celtic shocked defending champions Wairau with a commanding win. Chasing 208 Celtic reached their target in the 35th over led by Landon Neal with 48 and Matt McCormick with 39. Earlier Andrew McCaa had held the Wairau

innings together with 65 from 94 balls. In the end it was not quite enough for Celtic to overtake Renwick in 2nd place despite Renwick’s loss to Wairau Valley. Greg Stretch (41) led the way in Valley’s 190 all out batting first which proved 46 too many for Renwick for whom Corey Bovey returned the best bowling figures of 5 for 41. The final takes place this Saturday on the Horton no 1 ground starting at 11.30am.

in a stock car teams event which he won’t forget after being pushed up the wall and onto his roof by 154e driver Harley Robb. All the teams are now preparing for the second part to the battle in Christchurch this Saturday for the Mainland Teams Championship where the Titans will try to hold on to first place. The only change within the Titans will be Josh Neilson taking over for Dylan Robb who is battling issues with his car. “While this is friendly competition between the teams, I’m sure that the Palmerston North teams will be ready for us and not want us to win again,” Carla laughs.

Former national circuit champion Angus Moore got his 10th season in Open-class shearing with a big victory at the Marlborough A and P Show on Saturday. Moore, from Ward, won by more than 13 points, finishing the 10-sheep final almost two-anda-half minutes ahead of nearest rival Chris Jones, of Blenheim, with board and pen judging points 5pts better than next-cleanest shearer and eventual runner-up Dave Brooker, of Hawarden. Alex Drake and Todd Magill won the Senior and Junior finals respectively.
