Jeremy gives aid Story and photo by Celeste Alexander Twelve year old Jeremy Everson (right) now makes a habit of carrying his first aid kit around in his backpack after being able to help an injured boy and himself after being bitten by a dog. Jeremy, along with his class at Bohally School, recently attended the ASB St John in Schools first aid training programme where he received his own first aid kit.

First aid helps Continued from page 1 The programme teaches pre-school, primary and intermediate-aged children, like Jeremy and his classmates, how to deal with sprains, basic first aid on cuts and burns and basic CPR, all skills that were recently put to the test. “I was excited to take my kit home to show my mum and tell her what I had learnt. Mum suggested I put the kit in my backpack when I go out biking. “That very same afternoon I was biking by the river and a boy from school was swimming barefoot and stood on a broken piece of glass. I suggested he come out of the water to me so I could help him, I immediately got out my new first aid kit and put into practice what I had learned, and attended

to the cut on his foot using the plasters and dressing in the kit,” he says. The very next day Jeremy went for a bike ride to the same river with friends and on his way home a dog ran across the road and bit him on the leg. “I was alone and bleeding and then I remembered my first aid kit in my backpack. I bandaged and wrapped up my leg to control the bleeding enough to get home. I was so lucky I had my kit on me and to have used it immediately.” On Monday Jeremy met Kathryn Halstead, Tasman District educator for the ASB St John in Schools programme, to thank her for the first aid training. “Without this kit and the knowledge taught by St John I would not have known

what to do in my personal situation or have a kit on hand to use twice in two days. “I recommend that all schools have this basic first aid programme taught to

students. First aid, first on hand makes a difference,” Jeremy says. The ASB sponsors the newlook ASB St John in Schools basic first aid programme which can be booked by lo-

cal schools. Email kathryn. halstead@stjohn.org.nz for more information. Students who take part in an ASB St John in Schools session will receive their own first aid kit.

Stopbank risk prompts flyers, public meeting By Cathie Bell Earthquake damage to stopbanks in Spring Creek, Grovetown, and the Lower Diversion has led to the council warning residents of heightened flood damage. Flyers were delivered to homes yesterday, and a public meeting will be held at the Spring Creek Hall on Thursday next week at 7.30pm to discuss the potential for flooding. Marlborough District Council rivers engineer Geoff Dick says the stop banks are still intact, but there is an increased risk of them failing in a heavy rain, large river

flow weather event. If the Wairau River water flow goes over 2000 cubic metres a second, people should leave their homes, he says. Yesterday, the river was flowing at 68 cubic metres a second, and Geoff says in the heavy rain the day after the Kaikoura earthquake, the river reached 1300 cubic metres a second. The council plans to fix the stopbanks next month, but doing so will make them vulnerable as the repairs will lower the banks before building them back up, Geoff says, and so residents in Spring Creek need to be aware

of the possible risk if a flood happens. “We’re hoping for good dry weather over Christmas and New Year to get that work done.” Next week’s meeting will discuss ways residents can be warned if a storm happens and the river rises sharply, council communications manager Glyn Walters says. The damage to stopbanks in the Lower Diversion area means the campground there will not be open at Christmas as the access runs along the top of the stopbank which has slumped so much cars can’t drive on it.

Crossroads open for Christmas meals Story and photo by Cathie Bell Crossroads is to offer its community Christmas meal again this year, and will also host a breakfast on Christmas Day. Co-ordinator Janette Walker says the community drop-in centre will hold a Christmas dinner ‘with all the trimmings’ on Wednesday December 20. The meal will be the last community dinner for the year, she says. “We’re making it a Christmas dinner that anyone can attend, although we’d appreciate a heads-up from people planning to attend.” Last year 240 people attended, and Janette expects interest to be higher this year. Crossroads will also be open on Christmas Day for breakfast. “The breakfast last year was a bit of a ‘see how we go’, and everyone really enjoyed it. People are asking if we are doing it again, so we are.” Breakfast will be supplied from 8am until ‘roughly 11am’, she says. “It will be a Christmas feast again on Christmas Day itself.” Janette says as well as encouraging everyone in the community who would like to attend to do so, anyone interested in volunteering at either meal should also get in touch. “It’s interesting, we have already got people volunteering again this year, and new people have said they want to volunteer as well. We’re happy to have more, and any donations will be gratefully received.” Crossroads is already looking ‘Christmassy’ with a huge tree donated and decorated.

Prime Minister resigns Prime Minister John Key is ‘leaving before his time’, Kaikoura MP Stuart Smith says. John has resigned as Prime Minister and leader of the National Party, and will be replaced on Monday. Stuart says the Prime Minister was leaving at the top of his game, and he didn’t think ‘we’ll ever see anyone like him again’.

Save water Residents of Picton, Waikawa and Koromiko are being asked to keep their water use to a minimum today while a new electrical mains cable to the new water treatment plant at Speeds Road is being installed. Power to the pumps will be switched off for the day and the water available to Picton, Waikawa and Koromiko will be restricted to that stored in the town reservoirs plus limited supply from the Essons Valley Water Treatment Plant.

Demolition pending ‘Urgent discussions’ are continuing between the council and owners of an earthquake-damaged Queen Street building, after the building was red-stickered and the street closed in case the building collapsed. The owners had until Monday to decide whether to demolish or re-build, but are still waiting to hear from insurers.

Crossroads co-ordinator Janette Walker and volunteer Robyn Tucker are gearing up for the community Christmas dinner and breakfast.

Janette says ‘a huge ham’ has been donated from a man who takes the drop-in centre’s food scraps. “It’s going to be fun, a lot of people are preparing.” Christmas can be an awkward time for people, and Janette says she knows of some single fathers who will have their children on Christmas Day for the first time

and were wondering what to do. “Quite a few are coming here – it should be fun. “It’s quite a nice way to end the year which has been quite shitty for a lot of people. I’m really looking forward to it.” After the Christmas Day breakfast, Crossroads will be closed, opening again for breakfast and bread distribution on Wednesday

December 28 between 8.30am and 11am. It will open fulltime again on January 16 next year. • To attend the Christmas dinner or Christmas Day breakfast, or to volunteer, please ring Janette at Crossroads on 03 578 5395.

Pineapple surprise again and again!

5

By Les Whiteside Roberta Cameron has done it again. As our photo reveals, she is now the unofficial Queen of pineapple growers for the Top of the South after managing to successfully grow the tricky tropical fruit in the sunroom of her Blenheim home again. This is not the first time Roberta has performed the unusual feat after originally buying a supermarket pineapple and cutting off the tuft and planting it in a pot. From the original pineapple tuft, Roberta has three pineapples this year. The last time the Sun visited Roberta was in 2009, every year since both she and husband Don enjoyed the fruits of her labour by eating the pineapple. “It was delicious,” said Don “even tastier than the ones we had on holiday in Fiji and Hawaii where they grow them in big paddocks.” This year there are three, the latest two from cuttings of the original tuft. Roberta is delighted she has managed to nurture the pineapple through the cold winter in Blenheim, so far away from its natural home. Pineapples are best suited to humid coastal lowlands in tropical and subtropical regions such as northern and eastern Australia. “I have always had green fingers and liked gardening all my life,” says Roberta who

She says her love of gardening and growing things stems from a farming background in rural Oxford and her home garden, which backs on to the Taylor River is full of fruits and flow-

John and Caryll Crouch, Norm and Shona Crafar, and mayor John Leggett with the Marlborough Award.

Crafar Crouch win Marlborough Award

By Cathie Bell Civil construction firm Crafar Crouch ‘has always done its best’, co-owner Norm Crafar says. The company was awarded a Marlborough Award for the contribution it has made to the district over more than 30 years at a ceremony at the Marlborough District Council last Friday evening. Mayor John Leggett says Crafar Crouch Construction Ltd has designed, built and maintained a large share of Marlborough’s regional infrastructure, ranging from new subdivisions, underground and overhead power services, carparking, water supplies and sewer and stormwater services. The company has been involved with wineries, timber mills and railways, quarrying and landscaping, and building irrigation dams and civil emergency works. Norm and Shona Crafar and John and Carol Crouch employ more than 100 staff and the firm has built a sound reputation

as a reliable contractor and good employer providing a valuable training ground for the local workforce, John says. “Crafar Crouch Construction Ltd is also an excellent corporate citizen of Marlborough with an extremely generous approach to the community.” John Crouch told those at the award ceremony the company is ‘absolutely chuffed’ to be honoured with the award. “It’s the first time I’ve come to the council chambers and I’m not going to get kicked…. Those past experiences have been great, learning experiences, and we’ve all moved on. “It really is an honour to receive this award.” The Award was instituted so that Council, on behalf of the residents and ratepayers of Marlborough, could acknowledge an individual, organisation or business which has made a truly notable contribution to the life, welfare and economy of this district.

Thank you MDC Dear Ed, I would like to thank the Marlborough District Council for the upgrade of the Burleigh Road carpark. From the potholes, duckpond, and dustbath, to the wonderful park area we now have. Also thank you to TC Nicholls for the first clase job of removing all of the above. Grader driver, truck driver, bitumen tanker driver, and labourers, it was a pleasure to see such a team at work, doing a marvellous job, so a big thank you to all involved. John Simmons Blenheim

Regarding Destiny Church Dear Ed, I note a reader complained about Mr Tamaki in your last edition, shame on your reader. I would have to say that Bishop Brian is surely supported by God. Not only did he predict both the Christchurch and Kaikoura quakes, he also supplied the reason, albeit post event. Japan spends billions on early warning systems. I would suggest that if we taxed the other churches and gave him the funds he could improve his forecasting abilities to the advantage of everyone and actually predict them in advance. Do I sense a level of support out there? If so I am sure he will accept your donations. David Miller Blenheim

Roundabouts Dear Ed, In 1953, I took delivery of a brand new blue A30 (the actual one in the Hellers ads) from the Austin showroom in Oxford Street, London. I had a well planned route to my accommodation, which included a right turn at Marble Arch, which I did, only to be shouted at by a pedestrian and being confronted by two lanes of double - deck buses bearing down on me! Extra quick action was called for and I ended up on the footpath. I cannot remember how long I sat there to regain my composure, or how I extricated myself, and go around the other way. The first roundabout that this Kiwi had experienced. And what an experience! In subsequent visits to London I see that the Marble Arch is no longer the centre of a roundabout. John Vile Blenheim

Heartwarming Dear Ed, It has been incredibly heartwarming to read about the children donating gifts and food and having parcels delivered to Kaikoura, Ward and Seddon residents. When it comes to an emergency situation I think it’s safe to say the best help and in many circumstances, the first point of contact, comes from our neighbours, fellow residents and wider Marlborough area. Thank you for being so kind and making this old duck proud to call Marlborough home. Daph

By Annette Rattray A ‘bubbles and brunch’ fundraiser for the ladies of Picton took place last month as a follow-up to the ‘Men’s Breakfast’ and auction fundraisers held earlier in the year to raise money to replace the aged roof on the Holy Trinity Community Hall. The designated amateur male chefs delivered a range of delicious and artfully arranged food to more than 50 happily chattering ladies seated around the beautifully decorated tables in the hall. Black trousers, white shirts, bow ties and frilly white aprons adorned the chefs and waiters as they set about proving that ‘anything ladies can do, men can do better’. $90,000 of groceries to The Salvation Army’s foodbanks nationally. This year people can also donate online at New Zealand’s first online foodbank, The Foodbank Project www.foodbank.org.nz. The Salvation Army’s National Secretary for Social Services, Major Pamela Waugh, says around 17,000 families are expected to ask for food assistance by the end of the Christmas season in December. “Thousands of people who are only just getting by come to us for assistance simply to feed their families at Christmas. A hamper with pantry staples, meat, fruit and

some festive treats not only helps these families survive, but also helps them to celebrate Christmas and hopefully get some joy from the festive season,” she says. Most-needed food items for the Christmas Food Rescue Appeal: • Baked beans • Tinned spaghetti • Long life milk • Dry pasta • Breakfast cereal • Rice • Peanut butter • Sugar • Pasta sauce • Tinned tuna • Christmas treats

Pepi pods - safe sleeping Pepi-pods and wahakura, traditional Maori woven capsule, are being given to new mothers in Kaikoura so that quake damage doesn’t affect the babies’ safe sleeping. The baskets are portable infant beds that can be used anywhere but can also be brought into the adult bed to improve the safety of bed-sharing for those infants more vulnerable to Sudden Unexpected Death in Infancy. Felicity Spencer, a Safe Sleep advocate for the Public Health Service, says this is particularly relevant in the wake of the M7.8 earthquake as families use temporary sleeping arrangements and share their beds to comfort their children and keep them close by. “It’s only natural to want to keep your children close by, especially during unsettling times like this. Using pepi-pod or wahakura means that parents can maintain a safe sleeping space for their baby.” Disrupted living and sleeping conditions post-earthquake for Marlborough families means that many have temporary sleeping arrangements and are

sharing beds. Weavers from around the country have rallied to gift wahakura to Kaikoura mothers forced into adverse living conditions, she says. “Any enquiries from new and expectant mothers in Marlborough about where to source a wahakura or pepi-pod should ask their midwife or well-child provider in the first instance.” Last Friday was the fourth National Safe Sleep Day, an event that communities across New Zealand have embraced to prevent SUDI. Nationally, infant deaths from SUDI are falling; however babies were more likely to suffocate if they were sleeping on a couch, in a car seat or in the same bed as their parents or siblings. “Every sleep should be a safe sleep - face up, face clear and in a smokefree environment,” Felicity says. “Every family wants the best for their children; it’s about embracing safe sleep messages to protect the most vulnerable in our community.”

Veteran campaigner has court win By Cathie Bell Seddon personality Robert Terry has had another win in court, getting a $300 cheque from the Justice Ministry for his costs in appealing a speeding ticket from the police. Robert, 61, had been charged with driving more than 50 kilometres an hour and he defended it, with hearings scheduled on March 29, April 12, and July 19. The notes by Christchurch District Court judge David Saunders, from October 10, say Robert attended each ‘and on each of those dates, the fixture was not able to be accommodated’. “Although there was some suggestion that on July 19 the matter might be part-heard or at least heard later in the afternoon, in the end the police decided not to offer evidence and the matter was dismissed.” Robert applied for costs, but this was turned down by the Justices of the Peace hearing the infringement notice with no reasons given. He appealed that. The judge says he considered the file, and ‘the fact that on each occasion he has travelled a distance to be ready to proceed, the court system has not been able to accommodate the case’. “I am satisfied that it is right and proper that he at least be recognised by way of an award of costs for the mileage that he has incurred in travelling back and forth for these fixtures. If costs had been assessed under the general rate approved by the IRD, I am sure that it may well have reached a figure greater than the $300 that Robert seeks. “He has indicated to me that $300 costs would be an appropriate award for the mileage he has incurred. I agree that that is an appropriate contribution towards his costs.”

Robert Terry displays his cheque from New Zealand Justice department for $300.00. Robert told the Sun ‘taking on the establishment’ by taking every opportunity to appeal is his sport. “I pride myself on coming to the courts and taking the Crown on. “I’m proud of knowing the law better than most MPs.”

He says he’s one of the few people who would read 1200 pages of draft legislation on a Friday night. In 2012, Judge David Saunders described him as “a persistent and at times thoroughly obnoxious litigant”. Robert is famous for threatening Parlia-

ment and the Buller District Council, and has been to jail nine times, he says. He has received trespass orders from several organisations around town, which he plans to challenge, and regularly challenges parking tickets from the Marlborough District Council.

Puppies are NOT just for Christmas. Are you prepared for the new arrival?

Puppies love to chew on all sorts of things, it is important to get them their own toys, small stuffed toys or squeaky toys.

Planning and preparation for puppy care, routine, responsibility, exercise and rules are all very important and requires patience.

Remember that you are legally responsible for your dog and you must take all responsible steps to ensure it does not endanger, intimidate, injure or otherwise cause distress to any persons.

Puppies are cute. However they grow very quickly. Dogs generally live for about 11 years – are you prepared for this responsibility!

Puppies continually develop behavioural patterns so socialising is vital, this helps puppies learn acceptable behaviour and gain confidence.

Puppies are adorable – how suitable is your home? This new environment needs to be safe to live, play and explore in.

Cape Campbell coast moves The incredible rise of the sea bed by Cape Campbell has been captured in a photo from a drone flown by Quadimoto Productions a fortnight ago. The photo shows the historic Cape Campbell lighthouse, and the cottages at the end of the peninsula where the Hollywood production ‘The Light Between Oceans’ was filmed two years ago. In front of the lighthouse used to be sea, but is now corrugated land where a reef has been raised up out of the water. Quadimoto Productions is Blenheim man Derek Templeton’s company which he has set up to do drone photography. He has been travelling along the coast, shooting video and photos to capture some of the changes in the landscape caused by the Kaikoura earthquake. Derek says he has been flying drones for about four years as a hobby, but now unemployed, he is working to build a business doing drone photography. The changes in the landscape along Marlborough’s east coast are ‘amazing’, he says. This photo was taken from the beach under the lighthouse. Derek says he had walked from Marfells Beach to the lighthouse and had flown the drone from the land by the cottages.

Olivia Hayter and Keira Grenfell head the line of Pelorus Community Preschool pupils with Christmas donations for the Salvation Army.

Pre-schoolers’ Christmas spirit By Cathie Bell Pelorus Community Pre-school children have learnt about the spirit of Christmas and the joy of giving by collecting together toys for the Salvation Army to distribute. Bridget Lauder and Susan Goldsack from the Salvation Army visited the pre-school in Havelock last Friday to collect the children’s toys and other donations.

The children lined up to fill the Salvation Army van with the donations, and seemed pleased that the toys are to find a good home. Teacher Lisa Brown says the donations fitted the preschool’s vision and curriculum. “It’s about learning what Christmas is really about.”

Older people are being targeted by transnational criminal networks to act as drug couriers, as well as targeting them to act as ‘financial mules’, the Government says. Last week, The Sun told the story of a Marlborough woman who has unknowingly been made an accomplice to an international ‘money mule’ scam that has cost her tens of thousands of dollars. Sally* (not her real name) who cannot be identified due to a Police investigation, is in her late 80s and the stress of the situation has caused her serious health issues. In her case, the overseas fraudsters had persuaded her she had won a lottery as part of a syndicate and asked her to help by passing on the group’s administration fees. The customer then received a significant amount of money by direct credit, cheques and cash. The scammers then instructed the customer to send the funds to Canada through a money transfer organisation. In other cases people are lured by fake romances or asked to donate to an overseas charity to receive a significant tax refund. Customs Minister Nicky Wagner has warned older people and the vulnerable are also being ‘preyed on’ by drug syndicates. In the past 15 months, there were three interceptions of controlled drugs being imported by passengers over the age of 65, and Customs staff have also dealt with dozens of ‘at-risk’ Kiwis before departure. “Although Customs does not hold powers to stop them from departing, they do their best to make them aware of the risks and consequences of such travel. “Drug syndicates may approach people

Catherine Donnelly of Age Concern says scammers are at work targeting the elderly.

online to recruit them to become drug couriers – either knowingly or unknowingly. They’re then provided tickets to travel and collect drugs to take to a final destination. “These people may have invested money into the scam, and received or been promised financial or other benefits at the end of the trip. If you or someone you know has travel plans that sound too good to be true – they probably are.” “Many of Customs’ successes are based on information from concerned family or friends. If you have concerns, call 0800 4 CUSTOMS in confidence.” • Do you know of other Marlborough people affected by scams? Email news@ blenheimsun.co.nz

Rosie wins trip By Cathie Bell Buying Healtheries products for years paid off for Blenheim woman Rosie Bartlett who has won a $10,000 travel prize in a promotion the company ran through New World supermarkets. The ‘Bring me my Healtheries’ promotion featured former All Black Dan Carter, a Healtheries brand ambassador, during August and September. Rosie won the national prize and says she is delighted, but amazed because ‘I never win anything’. She says she has bought the win-

ning product, a powder she puts in her morning smoothies, for ‘years and years’. While she doesn’t usually enter competitions, she has been doing ‘active shopping’ and saw the promotion sticker and decided to enter. Rosie says she has yet to decide where she will go, using the $10,000 travel prize. Carolyn Dieudonne, Healtheries representative, says she is very excited the winner has come from her own local store, New World Blenheim.

Fund open to help earthquake victims now before Christmas. The Marlborough Earthquake Fund is currently sitting at $78,200 after donations from companies and individuals. “With Christmas coming there will be some people facing extra stress because they won’t yet know where they stand financially and there’s no doubt it will be a pretty tough Christmas for some families,” John says. It’s expected that a second round of applications to the fund will be considered early in the new year, he says. Welfare teams advise that donating to the Mayoral fund is the best way that others can help those affected by the earthquakes. Donations may be made to the Marlborough Mayoral Earthquake Fund through the BNZ: 02 0600 0202861 00 with the reference: mayor EQ. Monetary donations may also be handed in to the Council offices in Blenheim or Picton.

Navy’s top sailor Marlborough woman Leading Chef Alexis Gray was named the navy’s Sailor of the Year last year, and is now the navy’s nomination for the New Zealand Defence Force Person of the Year Award, to be announced tomorrow. Alexis started this year with official duties at Waitangi Day commemorations, and has represented the Navy at many events during its 75th anniversary year, including the recent International Fleet Review. She has also had a number of school speaking engagements as an NZDF Young Ambassador. Alexis is the epitome of what a sailor of the Royal New Zealand Navy should be, says Chief of Navy Rear Admiral John Martin. “Since joining our Navy in 2009, Alexis’ conduct has been professional, respectful, proactive, strong-willed, energetic and hard-working,” he says.

Marlborough people in difficult circumstances in the run-up to Christmas because of last month’s earthquake may apply to the local Mayoral Earthquake Fund for emergency financial help now. Mayor John Leggett says it is evident that some people have immediate welfare issues so one round of payments will be made before Christmas. Priority will be given to applicants needing help with the essentials for daily life, to those who are uninsured or whose costs are not covered by insurance, or who face particular financial burden due to the earthquake. Applications may be made through the Council website, www.marlborough.govt.nz or on the printed forms which have been delivered to Seddon and Ward. Applications will close Friday 16 December so that decisions can be made and funds allocated

MARLBOROUGH P O L LARD PARK F R OM 5PM

Don your Santa hat Story and photo by Celeste Alexander This will be the fourth year that Alastair Hebberd has taken on the role as stage manager for Christmas in the Park, an event he says leads up to his favourite time of year Christmas. Alastair is part of a dedicated team that helps to co-ordinate events on the day. His role includes looking after the programme, stage set up, layout and generally “pulling it all together”. “It’s a fantastic event that I personally have been attending since 2009, the first year it was held at Pollard Park. This will be our seventh event at the park now and with the increasing numbers we may be looking for a bigger venue in the coming years,” he says. The performances this year will include Julia Grace who is known for her singing, comedy, stage presence

and ability to draw in a crowd. “Julia has been in Blenheim before for a conference and people responded really well to her so I have no doubt the crowd will enjoy her performance,” Alastair says. Back by popular demand will be local act, the Hummingbirds. “For me they bring what Christmas is about...fun and coming together,” he says. The Vanuatu Sound group will also be taking the stage as well as the Bohally Choir and of course the Marlborough District Brass Band. There will also be quite a few good prizes to hand out this year, so make sure you dress up in Christmas theme, go along and enjoy the event. Alastair says if the weather is bad the event will be cancelled “but it hasn’t been cancelled yet”. “It’s going to be a another great Christmas in the Park,” he says.

Singers ‘honoured’ to perform By Celeste Alexander Singing is something that fills songbirds Olivia Burns and Alice Schofield with immense pleasure, so when they were asked to perform again at this year’s Christmas in the Park event they were thrilled. In fact this will be the third year for the talented young women who have sung with the choir, solo and together. This year Olivia and Alice will be leading the Christmas carols alongside the Marlborough District Brass Band, then Olivia will be performing

Olivia says. Both Olivia and Alice are studying at Victoria University but return home in the holidays. “This is one event I really look forward to, I used to attend with family in the past. We would pack a picnic and enjoy it together,” she says. For Alice singing Christmas carols is something she is looking forward to. “There’s something special about carols as they are only sung one month of the year so I am definitely pumped to get up there with the band and one of my close friends to sing

and put everyone in the Christmas spirit,” she says. One thing Olivia and Alice both believe is that Christmas is their favourite time of year. “As cheesy as it sounds, Christmas is a time for giving, coming together as a community and sharing the Christmas spirit... and Christmas in the Park accomplishes all of these things through its relaxed summer vibes, group carols and talent,” Alice says. “There’s something for everyone and I find that the crowd loves it, it’s such a good family event,” Olivia adds.

ULYSSES CLUB MARLBOROUGH

TOY RUN SATURDAY DECEMBER 10TH

Kelvin Watson has led the Toy Run each year dressed in his Salvation Army volunteers Lea Shanks and Cheyne Pharland pictured collecting toy donations at last year's Ulysses Father Christmas jacket. Because his CanAm bike will be out Marlborough Toy Run. File photo. of action this year, Don Best will be stepping in to lead the run. File photo.

Bikers set for charity Toy Run By Celeste Alexander Comradery and Christmas cheer are by far the greatest by-product of the annual Toy Run held by the Ulysses Club Marlborough Branch which is set for this Saturday. Club member Don Best will be donning the Father Christmas jacket this year to lead the Toy Run. He is standing in for club co-ordinator Kelvin Watson who has led the parade since it first started in 2009. The first run was organised by Jane Laing, Al Harper and Pete Rickerby and 150

motorcycle riders took part. This year’s Toy Run will benefit the Salvation Army and all gifts donated to the club on the day will go to local families, he says. “The Salvation Army collectors are always grateful for the items people donate and it’s a pleasure for us to do this,” Kelvin says. The Toy Run will begin at 12noon at the Woodbourne Tavern in Renwick with the gathering of bikers before leaving at 1pm. The ride is open to anyone with a legal motorcycle or scooter.

Salvation Army volunteers will be following the ride and can stop to collect toys from people along the way. The ride will go down Middle Renwick Road, right into Battys Road, left on to New Renwick Road then left onto Maxwell Road.

Title hopes dashed By Celeste Alexander A number of Eastern States Speedway drivers made the trip over the hill last Saturday for racing at Nelson Speedway. The South Island Stockcar Title race was a brutal clash between drivers and basically anyone without an ‘N’ on the side of their car was targeted by the home team. As a result the title was a clean sweep by Nelson with the Teece brothers claiming first and second and Tim Ross in third. ESS drivers did not fare quite as well, although Troy Currie left a lasting impression by doing his utmost to hit any car with an ‘N’ on it. Local streetstock drivers Matt Watson and Daniel Honey also made a dent on the opposition with Matt claiming one of the wins.

The Marlborough Endurance and Trail Riding Club held a weekend of successful rides on the weekend, at Seaview, Seddon, with the highlight being the International 1* 80km endurance event on Saturday. The rides, ranging from 16km up to 80km, were ridden around the stunning vineyards, looking out to the North Island in near perfect conditions each day. Winning the main event, the CEI 1* 80km, was local club member Linda Harmon riding her homebred gelding MF Shaheen,

their ride time for the three loop event, of five hours – just beating second-placed, North Island rider, Shantalle Geurtjens, riding Twynham El Desiree by two seconds and Alison Higgins of Nelson Lakes riding MF Bab Al Shams, who finished third. Sunday saw 32 horse and rider combinations turn out in overcast conditions to contest the competitive trail riding event, riding over the same beautiful flowing tracks and enjoying the amazing Seaview scenery.
