Jesus the reason for the season Continued from page 1 St Mary’s Preschool is a Roman Catholic preschool, and principal Hazel Shapcott says the Nativity play each Christmas is an important event every year. “It’s our culture here to teach the children the real meaning of Christmas and why we have Christmas.

“The Nativity play is the opportunity for the children to share that message with their friends and family.” She says the children spend a lot of time in the lead-up to it, practicing and it becomes a big celebration, ‘which is lovely’. “They love the whole part of getting dressed up, Mary comes in on

a balance bike which is the donkey, the kings have balance bikes as their camels.” All the children take part in it, and they do a performance for St Mary’s School students, many who attended the preschool and who remember their own roles in the Nativity play in previous years.

“It’s obviously been important to them, we’re building memories.” The play is a ‘really nice way to celebrate’, and Hazel says the children love celebrating it with others in the community. “They get quite a good understanding of what Christmas is all about by being involved in it.”

Quake-shaken urged to seek help By Cathie Bell Grassmere farmer Doug Avery is urging people affected by last month’s earthquake to take up the extra health support on offer. The Government last week announced $3.76m health support for Kaikoura and Marlborough to help people deal with the emotional and mental stresses and anxiety caused by the 7.8 magnitude earthquake. Doug says the earthquake and continuing aftershocks

are having a huge effect on people. “No-one is ok. “When you ask them, they say they’re ok, but if you dig deeper, we’ve all been badly knocked.” His own family has been ‘knocked around in terms of reserves of energy’ and lots of damage to houses, but ‘financially we’re fine’, he says. “Other people have no reserves at all. They find themselves absolutely laid bare.” Doug has been working

the past few years on the ‘Resilient Farmer’ programme, strengthening rural people’s emotional and mental health, and that has given him perspective on the effects of the earthquake on rural communities. “It’s pretty big stuff.” It can be hard for people to ask for help, but he urged people to get help, if not for them, for their neighbours. The effects will hit families and communities for a long time, he says.

Health Minister Jonathan Coleman says that after a serious earthquake, people can feel stressed and anxious for a long time after the event. The psychosocial recovery needs of the communities will change over the coming months and years, he says. For Marlborough the package includes: • $500,000 for three additional health practitioners, • $15,000 for the provision of free GP visits for residents of Ward, Seddon and rural

eastern Marlborough for six months. • $400,000 for three additional health practitioners to assist the Nelson Marlborough District Health Board in responding to increased demand as a result of rerouting State Highway 1. The Government has also extended the wage subsidy package for quake-affected businesses in Ward, Clarence, Kaikoura, and Hurunui for a further eight weeks.

Skin checks in a flash By Cathie Bell Blenheim venture capital fund Catalyst Capital has invested $150,000 into an app that enables people to get quick advice about potentially cancerous moles and skin lesions from specialists. Catalyst Capital principal David Taylor says he is delighted to take a lead investor role in Firstcheck, which he describes as ‘a cutting edge app’ and the first of its kind to get qualified advice from specialists to people quickly and at low cost. David says the Firstcheck app means that, with a couple of simple steps, that mole, rash or skin spot that’s been worrying you can be checked out, from the comfort of your own home. You take a photo of the troublesome thing, email it to a specialist chosen from a list, they examine it and get back to you saying whether you need further examination. “Users will know right away whether it’s nothing to worry about, if it can

be remedied with an over the counter medicine, or if it’s in need of a follow-up appointment. It is a truly specialist, convenient and costeffective skin advice tool that means there are no appointments, no waiting lists and no need to leave home”. Havi ng on ly just launched, Firstcheck already has 20 skin specialists signed up to review cases in Auckland, Bay of Plenty, Taranaki, Upper Hutt, Wellington and Central Otago, and in Blenheim, Mark Foley at The Skin Clinic. Over 4000 people are diagnosed with melanoma every year in New Zealand – that’s around 11 people every day. It’s the fourth most common cancer in New Zealand and accounts for nearly 80 per cent of all skin cancer deaths. Around 300 New Zealanders die of melanoma every year. Mark says the app is ‘going to be really useful’. “It’s going to put a tool in the hands of the public that

gives them rapid access to a skin cancer specialist.” David says his investment is a ‘significant investment into an early stage business which has a unique, market-leading offer’. “The harnessing of technology in a simple-to-use, cost-effective tool will help with early detection of deadly skin cancers. I am

excited at the opportunities Firstcheck offers and also the scope to add other telemedicine features as the business develops.” Firstcheck is the brainchild of two Taranakiba se d ent repreneu r s Hayden Laird, a lawyer by profession, and Frank Lachmann. Interest in Firstcheck

is high, David says, with invitations to attend the Asia Pacific Dermatology Conference in Australia, acceptance into a clinical study by a District Health Board, sponsorship to coexhibit with the Ministry of Health at an international medical expo, and support from Melanoma New Zealand.

More than $2.7 million was raised in a special Lotto draw for Kaikoura/ Hurunui and Marlborough regions following the 7.8 magnitude earthquake on 14 November 2016. All profits from last Saturday night’s draw will be transferred to the NZ Lottery Grants Board, who will administer the distribution of funding to support earthquake relief in Kaikoura/Hurunui and Marlborough regions.

Gift donations There are around 150 families that will benefit from the Sun’s Christmas appeal. Already a number of generous donations have been placed under the Christmas tree in the Sun’s foyer which is pleasing for Supporting Families Marlborough and Stand services which are the recipients. The deadline for donations is this Friday.

Helping the quake recovery Public servant Dave Brash has been appointed national transition manager by the Government. Acting Civil Defence Minister Gerry Brownlee says a National Transition Period in Kaikoura, Hurunui and Marlborough Districts issued last week will help support recovery efforts following the November 14 earthquake.

Anything from clothing and toys through to hygiene products and non-perishable foods are welcome. Wrapping paper would also be appreciated. RIGHT: Sun staff member Lacy Rees with some of the toys donated to the Sun Christmas Appeal.

Baking to help quake Renee says her idea was for the class to do something for the other schools affected. The girls came up with the idea of a bakesale. “The next thing is to write letters to send to quake-affected students.” Maddie says that with the help of their mothers, the two girls went shopping and bought the ingredients, and went to the school kitchen on Thursday and made all the baking they sold. Their mums also helped, providing truffles and biscuits to sell as well. Renee says sisters-in-law Sandy and Adele Large have been ‘hugely supportive’ to the school and helpful in projects Cousins Maddie Large and Abbie Large raised $180 in a bake sale at Grovetown School for quake-affected school pupils. like the bakesale.

By Cathie Bell Cousins Maddie and Abbie Large have raised $180 from selling home-made baking to classmates at Grovetown School. Abbie says their teacher Renee Gill was talking about helping earthquake-affected school students and she and Maddie ‘made it happen’. The two girls, aged nine and 10 respectively, baked a range of homemade goodies, which were snapped up by schoolmates last Friday. “We are all sold out.” The girls raised roughly $180, which Renee says will go to the Marlborough Principals’ Association fund for distribution around schools in southern Marlborough and Kaikoura.

Recycling bins return Red and yellow wheelie bins will be reappearing around central Blenheim and Picton very soon, as the summer recycling programme returns. The Marlborough District Council is to run another summer trial of the brightlycoloured plastic bins before deciding whether to put in more permanent recycling bins. The new red and yellow bins will be in Blenheim’s Market Street and Market Place, Main Street, Queen Street and Maxwell Road, and in Picton, they

will be in High Street and on the foreshore. Council solid waste manager Alex McNeill says the bins were quite well used last summer and he’s decided to give them one more summer-long trial. “The bright colours caused a bit of discussion last year but the point is to have them very visible around the town to try and encourage recycling; the idea is to help recycling to become day to day community behaviour.” Alec says the location of some

Full, Partial, Relines, Repairs European Quality

of the bins had been moved last summer and he was still open to feedback about the best spots for them. A survey of Blenheim retailers suggested they would prefer better looking permanent bins, but until those have been agreed, they feel any recycling bin is better than none. The yellow bins are for plastic bottles, glass, cans, cardboard, including coffee cups, recycling only, and the red bins are for all other waste, including food scraps.

The hidden highway Dear Ed, The wider community has become aware of State Highway 63 in its new form. However, for years, it has been the hidden highway, mostly due to Marlborough Roads’ belief of it as a secondary road. Now, we see what this has caused, having commercial interest, that is, dairy, forestry, and vineyards make what could be laughingly called improvements to the road, these being driveway bypasses, shoulder extensions allowing traffic to pass turning vehicles, and defering overdue work in widening the road, we will see traffic enduring travel along its length. But am I not the only one who foresees the coming storm? While it is summer now, the seasons

change and autumn brings with it the grape harvest. Pothole filling and shoulder repairs won’t be enough to provide a safe road for the flood of vehicles. Anyone who lives in the valley can imagine the nightmare of an accident or an overturned vehicle due to it taking evasive action. And as the world rights itself and Kaikoura is again the jewel on our east coast, and earthquakes no longer rattle us from our beds, what will the Wairau Valley have inherited? The upgraded rugged Hidden Highway 63, still transport route for Nelson and the West Coast but not if you can avoid it! Karen McDonald Wairau Valley

The editor reserves the right to abridge letters or withhold letters from publication. Email them to news@blenheimsun.co.nz or phone 577 -7868. Please note that your name and street address MUST be provided with emails.

The substitute highway White Pages washout Dear Ed, Roads such as State Highway 63, Blenheim to Kawatiri via St Arnaud, are at present substituting for State Highway 1. Such roads were designed and built by our forbears with 10-tonners in mind; the 40-tonners blithely introduced by our fearless leaders at the behest of their trucking industry backers will, as predicted by Winston Peters, shortly reduce this road to ruin, with great cost to ratepayers and damage to all vehicles which

have no option but to traverse it. No amount of speeding fines gained through the blanket Police presence will change this. The big rigs, at legal speeds, will simply pound the road to pieces. How very predictable. Government obliteration of coastal shipping, in a literally ‘littoral’ country, is so typical of the ham-fisted power structures we allow to govern us. Bill Holvey Witherlea

Dear Ed I’d be interested to know if others have trouble with ‘white pages’ telephone directory on the internet. I have on several occasions tried to locate individuals on there but it keeps coming up with ‘no result.’ Whatever happened to the notion that telephone services and mail deliveries were run for the people as a public service? Warrior boxer helps kids

Retired professional boxer Peter ‘Warrior’ Warren moved to Blenheim one year ago and is using his skills to provide training to locals. Reporter Celeste Alexander talks to Peter about his career and plans to open his own gym.

ABOVE: Peter Warren aged 21 after winning the Best Boxer Fighter in New Zealand title in 1981.

Retired professional boxer Peter Warren pictured in his home gym.

Peter’s career as an amateur and professional boxer began with his father, Rangi Warren, who was the driving force early in his life. He had his first knockout at the age of 10 and went on to have over 650 bouts, 79 professional fights, 11 loses and one draw, and represented New Zealand at the 1982 Commonwealth Games. He hung up his gloves at the age of 41 and looks back over his career with fondness and pride. “My dad threw me into the ring at the age of eight... I had been brought up with boxing and did it to please him. “I had actually wanted to be a

musician,” he laughs. Peter competed at the NZ champs in 1974, aged 14 and went on to represent New Zealand 80 times in Australia, Singapore, America, Samoa and even Papua New Guinea which put him in good stead to trial for the 1984 Olympics. But tragedy struck and he backed away from the boxing ring to take some time out. “My dad passed away in a car accident and quickly I decided I was finished, I didn’t want to do it anymore,” he says. Peter moved to Australia where the boxing scene started to pull

him back in and before long he got into the Australian Amateur team before turning professional one year later. He had 28 professional fights in Australia winning state titles including the Commonwealth title. “I had 28 pro fights, won 27 and drew one. After that I couldn’t get any fights because I was at the top. So I decided to give kickboxing a go and had four fights, winning three and losing one. At the age of 30 Peter returned home to NZ and fought some local pro fights based from Christchurch and won the NZ Featherweight pro title.

In 2000 he made a come back to the top pro ranking in NZ and went on to win three more titles. Combatants included the ‘Iraqi Assassin’, Tony Webber and Pantera from Columbia before retiring at 45. “That’s got to be a NZ record,” he laughs. Peter has since moved to Marlborough with his partner “for a new life” and got back into boxing training thanks to Marcelo Lopes. He’s looking for a new premises to open up ‘The Warrior Warren Boxing Gym NZ’. “Since coming to Blenheim I

“I beat Rocky Kongram who was the World Featherweight Kick Boxing Champ, knocking him out in the second round,” he says. started a gym, have two guys fighting, a team of 13 getting ready to fight at the Novice Champs in Christchurch in January and have 79 currently in training. “Not only that but I’m making big changes in the kids lives through fitness and education. “I want this gym to succeed. I have had my day, it’s gone and not about me anymore. It’s for the kids and what I can do for them. “I am giving them all of what I know and what my dad taught me. I give them 100 percent and never miss a day of training, except Sundays for church,” he grins.

Bikes roar into town for Toy Run

Story and photo by Celeste Alexander Wet weather failed to dampen the spirits of those who turned out for the Ulysses Toy Run last Saturday. Ulysses Marlborough branch coordinator Kelvin Watson says 87

motorcycle riders took part, only three less than last year, which was “pleasing”. “It was another highly successful Toy Run and we had everything from scooters to Harleys, Honda Goldwings to vintage sidechairs.

Thank you to everyone who supported us and the Salvation Army,” he says. The Toy Run left Renwick at 1pm and drove through to Blenheim School where they stopped for a barbecue and collected toy donations.

Smiles, toys and generosity

Allister Green and daughter Georgia (12) took part in their first Toy Run last Saturday.

Kindergarten kids give toys to Red Cross Story and photo by Celeste Alexander Renwick Kindergarten children have shown compassion and generosity for those affected by recent earthquakes by donating toys and gifts to the Marlborough Red Cross. The organisation’s president Lynette Jones and patron Paul Watson went along last Friday to meet the children and their families and receive the donations. “It’s been a very pleasant morning and we are thrilled to be here. I couldn’t believe the volume of gifts that were waiting for us under the Christmas tree,” she says.

Lynette and Paul say they will use the advice of local teachers and preschool providers in the Seddon and Ward areas to distribute the gifts. Teachers Sarah Greenslade and Kate McVie say it is a great time to promote “thinking of the wider community” to the children. “Part of our kindergarten’s philosophy is to always be thinking of other people and through this donation process we have made a lot of links to the wider community. “It has engaged the children in the wider environment and shown that a positive can follow a negative,” they say.

Father disappointed in prison meeting Convicted double murderer Scott Watson has failed to convince the father of one of his victims, Gerald Hope, of his innocence. Gerald has been keen to meet Watson, after he was convicted of the murders of Olivia Hope and Ben Smart who went missing in the Marlborough Sounds on January 1, 1998. North and South journalist Mike White facilitated the meeting, which was allowed after court action, and his transcript of the meeting is in the magazine’s latest issue. In response to that article, Gerald has said in a statement that Watson was ‘elusive’ about what he did on January 1, 1998. “Some years ago I challenged Scott Watson ‘To convince me that you are innocent and I’ll back you’ “After all the talk lasting nearly six hours there remain only a few key items of evidence that I focussed on to clarify my own thinking as to Watson’s guilt: 1. The time that Watson returned to Blade – either at 2am or 4am?

2. Whether or not he and Blade were at Marine Head around 9am on 1 January 1998? 3. The actual arrival time at Erie Bay; either mid-morning to 12 noon – or around 5pm? 4. Watson’s response when asked ‘to fill in’ what he did on New Year’s Day; what did he do and where was he until his arrival at Erie Bay around 5pm?” He says Watson was ‘elusive’ about what he did on 1 January 1998. “I concluded he had rehearsed his responses to much of the evidence we discussed. His response was absolute silence on some of the more circumstantial elements of the prosecution case such as the disposal of the bodies in a sleeping bag. When confronted with this he was mute, unemotional, disconnected – Watson definitely did not convince me that he is innocent on this point. “He failed to convince me that what he said he did on the 1st of January 1998 actually took place.” There were four specific points where Gerald was not convinced of

his innocence, he says. These were: • Sighting at Marine Head - his response was that he never stopped. The evidence was that a boat was seen there and that it was confirmed as Blade and Watson. • The squabs from the main cabin with large sections cut out and then carefully picked out are crucial to the case. I was not convinced that they were caused by paint spillage or accidental burning from a cigarette. • His arrival time at Erie Bay. He said he was there by lunchtime – whereas Zowie and Michael Green confirmed his arrival around 5pm. This is crucial to the conviction and leaves many hours in the day unaccounted for. What was Watson doing? • Finally, the art work - supposedly a personal statement, a visual expression by Watson not long after he was arrested. When I look at the drawing I see a disturbed person, evil depictions and undertones of death and retribution. This draws me to the conclusion that at that time in his life Watson had no respect for women

and was living a dark fantasy where death was the currency of the day. “There has been so much said,

written, filmed and speculated since 1998 that I now request that no further interviews be requested.”

Samuel (11) and Reuben (9) and their father Reverend Joe Keighley helping to set up the Renwick Christmas Tree Festival.

Trees open for viewing Story and photo by Celeste Alexander The Renwick Christmas Tree festival opens to the public today at the Anglican Community Church on High Street and will be able to be viewed up until Christmas Eve. Reverend Joe Keighley and his family were busy adding the final touches to the display yesterday to what he says is even bigger and brighter than last year. “Last year we had 30 trees deco-

rated but this year that number has grown to around 40. I’m excited by the wonderful creativity and support shown by the community and I look forward to people coming to visit and enjoy this experience,” he says. Around 20 groups have been involved in the festival, creating everything from Frozen, Ninja Turtles and Minecraft themed trees, to driftwood and farm style creations.

The festival will be open to the public from 11am to 10pm each day and entry is free. A collection bucket will be at the entrance in support of Tear Fund. Carols will be playing throughout the festival and a carol service will be held on Sunday, December 18 at 7pm among the trees and lights. The Christmas Day service will also be held at 9.30am among the trees.

New owner Paula Rangi

Red Salt Cafe Bar and Restaurant Picton’s Red Salt Cafe Bar and Restaurant is under new ownership and has some exciting new changes in place. Paula Rangi and her husband Billy took over the business on December 5 after first inquiring about it two years ago. “I loved Picton from the very first moment I saw it and it instantly felt like home. It was the same when I saw the business one day going into the supermarket,” Paula says. Originally from Victoria, Australia Paula had owned three cafes and dedicated her career to hospitality, so after setting roots in Picton it was the first thing on her mind. “For me I want this cafe to be a place for the locals to come, sit and relax and enjoy good company. We have great parking here and the mall is the business hub of Picton so I want it to be on people’s minds to “go to Paula’s for a coffee. “It’s very much a family business and I could never do this without their support. I’m a bit overwhelmed how much I love it,” she laughs. Since taking over, Paula has updated the decor inside and out, adding splashes of colour with plants, flowers and pallet gardens as well as areas where people can sit in lounge chairs and relax. The menu has also had an overhaul, introducing dishes such as the ‘All Day Breakfast’

and the Red Salt Kumera Toast and Stacks which have been an instant hit with diners. “I would say the gourmet steak sandwich is really popular as well as the beer battered fish and chips which are made with good quality ingredients.” The lunch menu has been aimed at the locals catering for ‘convenience’, Paula says. “The cabinet is kept full so locals can pop in and grab a quick bite to eat. Alternatively they can enjoy their lunch break and dine in.” Paula takes pride in her home-style cooking when it comes to her gourmet pies and sausage rolls. “My steak and blue cheese pies are the most popular as well as my sausage rolls which are big and full of flavour. “I’m not someone to serve up small portions and the only complaint I have had so far is that the meals are too big,” she laughs. The coffee will also be changing next week to Australian brand ‘Org’, an organic coffee been that has been tried and trusted by Paula. “My new coffee machine will be arriving next week which is very exciting so please come in and try the new coffee,” she says. Opening hours are currently 7.30am - 4pm Monday to Saturday, and after Christmas Red Salt Cafe Bar and Restaurant will open Sundays from 8am - 2pm.

Local heroes honoured for community service

Everyday people doing exceptional things were the toast of the town last week as Marlborough honoured its very own ‘local heroes’. As part of the 2017 Kiwibank New Zealander of the Year Awards, the 14 winners of the Local Heroes category were presented with their awards at a special medal presentation ceremony held at the Marlborough Convention Centre last Thursday night. Marlborough District Council Mayor John Leggett presented the medals, congratulating the recipients on their awards and saying it is ‘vital’ the community continued to acknowledge the contributions they have made. “Many of these medal winners are unsung heroes whose selflessness has had a positive effect on the lives of so many others in our community. Their acts of charity, optimism and commitment are the glue that holds a community together and I appreciate this chance to see their efforts recognised.” The Kiwibank Local Hero awards are now New Zealand’s premier community award and give thanks to those providing a positive contribution to their region, town, suburb or community. Nearly 350 medals will be presented nationwide over the next few weeks. Kiwibank chief executive Paul Brock says Kiwibank is proud to be supporting local communities celebrate their outstanding citizens over the past eight years.

Marlborough mayor John Leggett and the Marlborough region’s local heroes. The recipients of the Kiwibank Local Hero Awards for Marlborough were: Geraldine van Wijngaarden - recently retired after more than half a century of service to nursing in Marlborough, and also had a huge contribution to the success of the Churchill Trust Private Hospital. Litty Newman - Litty has been a budget advisor for the New Zealand Federation of Family Budgeting Services for the past eleven years, half of which was as a volunteer, helping hundreds if not thousands of families from Marlborough and further afield. Bruce South - a longstanding stalwart of the Picton Cricket club where he has been an active member since 1993. Without the efforts of the entire Picton Committee, and in particular the endless hours put in by Bruce, it is likely the club

would no longer be in existence, and the community would not have access to the sport of cricket. Wayne Gander - a dedicated member of the Marlborough community through his various involvements, he is Churchward Park Cubs leader, Marlborough Scouts training leader, Marlborough contingent jamboree leader and is the national member on the Scouting database group. Sara Hunter - recently retired as treasurer of Marlborough Family Budgeting Service, a voluntary position which she held for a number of years. Sarah was a certificated budget adviser for nearly seven years and a member of the governance committee of Marlborough Family Budgeting Service for nine years. Linda Holdaway - gives back to her community through her life-long passion

for music. As a teacher, mentor, performer and vocal coach she has been heavily involved in the success of the Blenheim Musical Theatre. Wendy Reynolds - active in her community and for a number of years has been running Eldercare programmes. Greg Pask - a volunteer coach of the girl’s recreational grades at the Blenheim Gymnastics Club for 17 years. Denise Lloyd - Denise has been a committed member of the Marlborough Hockey scene for almost 30 years as a player, coach and administrator. Gina Anderson - the creator of the Facebook page Care Packages Marlborough, the group makes and delivers free gift parcels to people across the region. Janette Walker - A farmer advocate, Labour candidate for Kaikoura, John’s

Kitchen and Crossroads co-ordinator, Janette works tirelessly to provide a safe place for Blenheim residents to find food, companionship, advice, advocacy and referrals. Caro Bartlett – Rai Valley community member who has tirelessly campaigned to retain and rebuild a local back country hut. Rose Shallcrass - involved in Blenheim Girl Guiding for 12 years helping girls of all ages to challenge themselves and learn, and recently stepped up to run two additional Girl Guiding groups alongside her own. Daniel Smith – giving back to his community as a volunteer ambulance officer with Kaikoura St John for more than four decades.

Humble Lion accepts honour Margaret Marfell was very proud when she received The Melvin Jones Fellowship Award after 24 years of service to the Lions Club. Margaret’s husband was one of the original Lions that started up in Seddon and she would help him with his role when he was busy with their farm. “Because we were farming if he was busy I would often do the Lions jobs for him. When he passed away and I came to town my friends asked me to join,” she says. During that time Margaret has been a very active member and went on to be awarded the Personal Growth Award, selected to be a member of the Lloyd Morgan Friends of the Trust and more recently given the honour of becoming a life member. The Melvin Jones Fellowship Award was an honour, she says. “While I think there a lot of people who are more deserving I am very excited and proud.” RIGHT: Margaret Marfell with her award.

Abrupt change Concert warms brings new chapter

Blenheim’s own Olivia Sheat thrills the crowd during last Sunday’s Christmas in the Park. The concert, held at Pollard Park on Sunday evening, was described as ‘a great success’ by organisers, despite the cold, wet weather. Due to the uncertainty of the weather, the crowd was down on previous years with about 2000 people attending. Performers included Olivia, Julia Grace, and the Marlborough District Brass Band. Donations on the night raised Olivia Sheat sings during the Christmas in the Park $1200 for hospital chaplaincy. concert.

The book, Valley Gatherings, got a new chapter after the 7.8 earthquake hit near Kaikoura, abruptly changing the landscape in the Clarence Valley. She is in Blenheim today to deliver some books to the Vines Village which is going to sell the book, and it is likely to be stocked by other businesses in town. Speaking yesterday, Genevieve says the reaction to the book has been ‘really good’. A launch party was held at her family farm on Sunday, and she says it was great to get all the locals together. “Everybody is thrilled with it, everyone knows someone on the pages. “It’s come together really well, I’m thrilled with it.” This is the first book by Genevieve, showcasing the wonderful area she calls home, with beautiful design and over 300 stunning colour photographs. It is also available online at her website, and $3 from every book will go towards helping the people of Clarence rebuild their homes, farms and lives in the wake of the earthquake that hit just days before the book went to print. By Cathie Bell Wairau Awatere ward councillor Cynthia Brooks wins the prize for the most frugal candidate in this year’s council elections, spending nothing on her campaign to get re-elected. In contrast, mayor John Leggett spent close to the $30,000 limit in his campaign. His largest expense was the marketing services provided by campaign manager Jason Henry, followed by signs, and newspaper advertising. Colin King spent just over $14,000, with most of that being newspaper advertising, signs, and photography and design work by his campaign manager, Simon Greenwood. Brian Dawson spent $14,019, mostly on billboards and car signage, and newspaper advertising. John Davis spent almost $11,000, on a website, newspaper advertising, and signs. Only three candidates reported receiving donations, all three in the Blenheim ward. Jenny Andrews received $894.20 from her employer GT Sowmans to pay for newspaper advertising, Peter Chapman received $1050 from two people: Lindsay Newdick ($1000) and Keith Thompson ($50), and Laressa Shenfield received $210 for an adhesive sign from Andrew Clarkson. Cynthia says she re-used signs from her campaign in the previous election in 2013, which had been in storage with the wood used then too, and she made some flyers at home which she delivered around Renwick. “It wasn’t bad, was it?” Her work in the rural ward over the past three years had helped her visibility on the

Christmas fun

The Sun

Renwick Preschool held its Christmas party last Saturday with a special visit from Father Christmas.

 Nikora Campbell, Charlotte Ross and Jack McGruddy  Catherine Timson and son Oliver (20 months) meeting Father Christmas.

Toy Run

 Siblings Danniella (5) and Harley Clarke (2).

The Ulysses Marlborough branch held its annual Toy Run last Saturday and despite the wet conditions, it was well supported.

 Kelvin Watson led the Toy Run dressed as Father Christmas.

Christmas in the park

 Cheyne Pharland and Georgia Appo were volunteering for the Salvation Army and collecting toys.

 Vintage motorcycles were among the bikes taking part in the Toy Run.

Pollard Park hosted the annual carol singing concert, and despite the gloomy weather, the crowd enjoyed the event.

 Anja Kocsis, two year-old Ailey Adkins, and Nadine  Jonty Zydenbos and Spencer Lane from Blenheim were dressed up for the event.

 Susan and Joe Keighley from Renwick were there.

Adkins, from Blenheim, enjoyed listening to the singing.

Special tribute for local streetstock driver By Celeste Alexander A special remembrance event for all the people who were involved in speedway and have passed away was held last Saturday by the Eastern States Speedway. A list of 40 names was read out as the club and crowd held a minute silence in respect for those who were part of the club and dedicated their time as members. There was also a special trib-

ute held for 32-year-old Gerald Flintoft, affectionately known as Chunky, who passed away last Tuesday. Gerald was a streetstock driver, vehicle checker and valued member of the club. Streetstock drivers held a special race, did burnouts and released yellow and black balloons in his memory. Gerald was farewelled yesterday by family and friends and was

driven around the track in the hearse for his final lap with his streetstock car parked nearby. BNT sponsored the Remembrance Champs which saw each class compete for trophies for first, second and third placings, and Christmas activities were held for junior members including a visit from Father Christmas. This was the final speedway meeting for the year as the club

takes a break before resuming the season on January 14. Remembrance Champs first place winners Productions - Jeff Stanton Streetstocks - Bradley Evans of Nelson Youth ministocks - Brayden Nell of Nelson Stockcars - Scott Alexander Saloons - Paddy North

Funding for college sport focus Sport Tasman says it has made a fast start to a three-year plan to boost the low number of secondary school students playing sport in the top of the south region. Just 45 per cent of college students in the 15 schools across Nelson, Marlborough, Kaikoura and Buller played sport last year, the second lowest participation rate in the country and well below other similar regions and the national average of 54 per cent. It is even worse for young women, with the participation rate having fallen sharply in recent years to 41 per cent. Funded by a two year grant from Rata Foundation and with support from Sport NZ and the NZ Secondary School Sports Council, Sport Tasman earlier this year launched a strategy to reverse the decline. The goal is to boost student participation Female school students’ participation in in sport up to 80 per cent over the next three sport has dropped to 41 per cent. years through initiatives such as creating
