Seth Thompson (7) and Koen Avery (1) pose for a photo under the festive reindeer at Seymour Square.

Continued from Page 1 Star of the Sea Catholic youth co-ordinator Tina Connor says Christmas is an important time of the year for the church community, especially its young people. “It’s great they can be involved in services, and they really enjoy it.” St Mary’s church is holding a youth and family Mass at 7.30pm on Christmas Eve, with a carols and Mass at 9.30pm. The traditional Midnight Mass will be held at St Joseph’s in Picton. Nativity Church vicar Bob Barnes says Christmas is ‘tremendously important’ as it is one of the two big festivals for the Christian church, and is ‘culturally important’ too, ‘even for atheists’. “It’s more intense, more focused, and it’s about a cute baby.” He says Nativity Church is expecting good crowds at its services, probably on the same scale as last year when up to 500 people attended. Elim church senior pastor Tom Hatch says

his church has been busy, holding a walkthrough Christmas display in the church foyer, which will be open up until Christmas Eve night. Christmas Day’s service, at 9am, is one of the church’s biggest, he says. “Families are gathering and people have come home from study and stuff like that.” The continuity and familiarity of the Christmas church service is also a drawcard, ‘given the craziness of the world right now.’ “When you think about what’s going on round the world right now, there’s something settling about continuity… Christmas is a focal point for believers and a little bit of one for non-believers as well. Jesus is the reason for the season. “There’s continuity, there’s familiarity, and for the craziness that’s going on round the world, there is also some reassurance that there is something normal. “Peace and goodwill to all men on earth, I think everyone would like a dose of that right now.”

Book for Picton party bus now By Cathie Bell A free bus is available to take people from Blenheim to Picton on New Year’s Eve for fireworks and celebrations on the waterfront, but people need to book a space in advance. O rga n isers of t he Ig n ite Marlborough event say the party will be ‘huge’ with family-friendly entertainment, starting from 7pm . Marlborough 4 fun chief executive Katrina Lange says there is no entry fee to the concert, which will have bands, A Minor Thing, The Stilettos and Puree, ending with a spectacular fireworks show set to music at midnight. “This fantastic community event,

allows Marlborough communities to celebrate together, and you to party with all your friends in one place,” she says. “What a fantastic way to showcase our stunning region to visitors who join us at such a special time of year. “ Katrina says the event is family friendly, with a children’s entertainment area going until 10pm, with a heap of inflatables, circus style workshops and performances, facepainting, balloon twisting and other kid’s entertainers. Ignite Marlborough is sponsored by the Marlborough District Council and Port Marlborough, and supported by Interislander. To book phone Marlborough 4 Fun. Fireworks will provide an explosive way to bring in the New Year in Picton.

Ministry decision on schools’ site queried By Cathie Bell Blenheim engineer Nick Meeten has questioned why the Education Ministry has identified a site where building will be more difficult for the proposed co-located colleges. And the Blenheim Business Association agrees it would be ‘preferable’ for the colleges to be closer to town. The ministry has said 225 Alabama Road in Riverlands is the ‘leading option’ for a site for the new co-located Marlborough Boys’ College and Marlborough Girl’s College. Jerome Sheppard, head of the Ministry of Education’s Education Infrastructure Service, says the site has been identified as the most promising option for a new home for the two colleges. “It is a large site, and further work will be done to identify what part of the site will work best for the schools. We will also carry out engineering investigations to confirm which areas are most suitable for building on.” The land is owned by MacDonald family company Montford, and has been described as potentially prone to liquefaction. Nick queries why changes to Bohally Intermediate were ruled out from the start, when it would make more sense to move Bohally to the Marlborough Boy’s College site in Stephenson Street, and the Bohally site in MacLachlan Street used to co-locate the two colleges. He has written to Marlborough mayor John Leggett and Kaikoura MP Stuart Smith to ask them to query the ministry on its decisions.

Suspected leak Stephenson Street in Blenheim was closed yesterday while a suspected gas leak at Marlborough Boys’ College was investigated.

Heath reappointed Renwick School principal Simon Heath has been re-appointed to the Education Council by Education Minister Hekia Parata. His term runs until 30 June 2019. Established in July 2015, the Education Council is the professional organisation for teachers.

Crayfishing back The Government has lifted the temporary emergency closure of the rock lobster or crayfish fishery along the east coast of the South Island as 5pm yesterday, but the remaining shellfish and seaweed species (excluding scampi) remains in place until February 20. Primary Industries Minister Nathan Guy says the re-opening is really positive news for the local community and economy given this fishery is worth around $23 million per year.

The ‘leading site’ for the co-located colleges, a vineyard on Alabama Road.

The schools’ decision is ‘a really big decision’ that will affect Marlborough’s children for the next 100 years, Nick says. At a time when the growth of the town is at the other end of town, there is no council infrastructure in place, no nearby sport facilities, and transport is awkward, he queried why that site was the ‘leading option’. Blenheim Business Association chairman Anthony Mullen says the site is not ‘a done deal’ and once the decision was made, the reasoning might be clearer. “Closer to town would have been preferable.”

Jerome says it’s important to stress that this is not a done deal yet, and there are ‘several other options’ if ‘for any reason’ the purchase does not proceed. “Cabinet has approved up to $63m for this project, which will equip the two schools with state of the art buildings and technology. The two colleges have already started planning how they can bring each of their educational visions to life in a new co-located setting. “The local community made it clear during public consultation that they believed placing the two colleges on one site, or near

each other, would offer the best educational opportunities for local teenagers. “Both schools are part of the Marlborough Community of Learning with other local schools. Having a shared campus will support the co-operation between these two colleges and the wider group of schools and help them tackle shared achievement challenges.” • What do you think of the proposed site? Is there a better location? Let us know at the Blenheim Sun – email on news@blenheimsun.co.nz

Book tale of Ron’s life By Cathie Bell The Marlborough man who took a replica whaling boat and a team of college students to London to row along the Thames River as part of the Queen’s diamond jubilee has published a book about his life. Ron Perano had dictated his story onto a tape recorder, and it has been typed up by daughter Gail, and published by local publishers, John and Maree Penney at Prisma Print. The book, ‘What an Adventure’, was officially launched at an event last Saturday evening. Ron says he never thought he’d ever write a book. “I’m not much of a reader… As children we were never encouraged to read and were too busy playing in the river and in boats. “I only went to school to eat my lunch really.” Ron’s life story goes from the Wairau Bar, Ron Perano and his autobiography. to the Marlborough Sounds and Cook Strait, where he started as a whaler and finished working as an observer counting whales for hear Ron speaking in his own voice. The 203-page book is available to buy for the Department of Conservation. John says the dictation method means the $40 from Prisma Print, The Magazine Shop book reads differently to the usual way, but it in Blenheim, Paper Plus in Blenheim, Take is as unchanged as possible so that people can Note in Picton, and from the Picton Museum.

Spring Creek roundabout Dear Ed, Two letters (Dec 14) mentioned roading and highways. With that in mind, it’s difficult to understand the thinking behind putting a roundabout at Spring Creek where Ferry and Rapaura Roads join State

Highway One. It would have been more efficient traffic-wise and much, much more less costly to simple make the 300 metres on State Highway One a 50 km per hour stretch. One wonders at the IQ of the

roading people and particularly in Marlborough Roads. But perhaps it’s not a matter of IQs but a matter of bureaucrats giving themselves a job designing and building some unneeded roundabout? Don Coyote

Welcome the traffic not moan Dear Ed, I understand and agree with Renwick’s concerns about traffic flow problems, however I do also think the residents need to exercise some leniency and patience as this will not be permanent. On the bright side, last night as

I drove along Middle Renwick Road through to the CBD I noticed quite a few trucks parked beside Blenheim motels and a steady stream of campervans driving through into Blenheim. Yes the traffic is heavier than usual, but these people are also putting

money into the pockets of our local businesses. So let’s not focus on the negatives and maybe try to find a way to accommodate these drivers and encourage them to stay in Marlborough a little longer. Mustang Sally

State Highway 63 Dear Ed, I usually drive on New Zealand’s roads cursing at drivers I see taking stupid and unnecessary risks and complaining about road layout and markings that make no sense. Please let me share a very different experience with your readers and put some credit where credit is due. Yesterday (Thursday) I drove from Murchison to Blenheim along SH6 and SH63. I lost count of the number of road works and traffic control points along SH63 especially beyond St Arnaud. There is no doubt that poor old SH63 is under enormous pressure probably carrying more than ten times the volume of traffic that it did before last month’s earthquake. But just about everyone was being very patient and tolerant. Drivers were even sticking to the 30kph speed limits! I take my hat off to the many contractors working very hard

to keep this vital corridor open. I saw a bailey bridge being constructed near St Arnaud and there’s even something happening at the Wash Bridge over the Wairau. There must be hundreds of people working on this formerly quiet stretch of road. Because it’s state highway I’m presuming the cost will be met by the taxpayer and not the Marlborough ratepayer. It is ironic that driving behaviour is so much better under such trying conditions. Are we driving better in spite of the disruption or because of it? At the moment we are stoically accepting that our journey will take longer. Will the changes to help SH63 do its job until SH1 is open invite drivers to go faster than they should? I for one hope that we remember this lesson that the risks to save a few minutes on our journey are simply not worth it. Evan Robinson Blenheim

Husband’s cancer inspires head shave Story and photo by Celeste Alexander For 15 years Sue Sheat has been thinking about shaving her head for cancer, but the decision was finally made this year after her husband was diagnosed with bowel cancer. Sue will be going under the clippers tomorrow and has already nearly doubled the amount of donations she initially wanted. Sue, the clinical manager of the Ashwood Park Retirement Village’s hospital wing, says after working in the industry for 22 years she has seen “a lot of cancer”. She also lost her father to cancer one week before her wedding so when her husband was diagnosed, ‘it hit home’ she says. “For 15 years I had never had enough of a trigger to go through with it but the trigger is now my husband. Life is short and I thought why not... it’s only hair. I will be saving on shampoo, conditioner and time,” she jokes. The shave will be held at her work place with staff and residents in attendance to offer support and encouragement. “It’s turned into a celebration and the donations have

been pouring in. I only planned to raise $500 but that’s nearly doubled now,” she says. Before shaving off her hair completely, some fun will be had first. “I’ve been told they will be doing a mohawk, then a mullet. I’m sure it will provide plenty of entertainment for the day,” Sue laughs. Asked what she will do with her hair once it starts growing back, Sue says she might leave it natural. “Right now my hair is coloured and permed so when it grows back it will be straight and grey which will take a while to get used to,” she grins. Donations for Sue’s headshave are being made via the Shave for a Cure website. RIGHT: The nerves have set in for local woman Sue Sheat who is shaving her head tomorrow to raise money for cancer.

New online resource for learner drivers For many young drivers, reading a road code is a foreign concept, but there are an increasing amount of driving resources becoming available online. Blenheim driving instructor Heather Richards says young drivers are tending to learn online, switching their attention to YouTube videos and websites for advice. As such, instructors and driving agencies are ensuring there are more resources available online, Heather says. “They are trying to put more and more online tools up … capturing young people’s eyes, (young drivers) they don’t want to sit around and read a book, they want to go on the internet.”

NZTA and ACC have teamed up to create a new website, Drive, which Heather says is a great tool for learning drivers. Drive includes an interactive Road Code with quizzes and games, as well as video lessons and tips for the restricted and full licence tests. It also provides coaching resources and information on how to teach someone to become a safe driver. “It’s really good … it’s the way kids are motivated,” Heather says. Knowing how young drivers communicate is key to connecting with them, Heather says. “(When) we started 15 years ago, cell phones were not hugely popular, people rang me, nowadays 90 per cent of my business is through text

(messaging) or Facebook.” Heather still takes regular NZTA approved defensive driving courses, teaching drivers new skills and helping them to make safe responsible decisions while driving. Doing a defensive driving course can also shorten the amount of time a driver is to stay on a restricted licence by six months, which Heather recommends. “I try to encourage young people to get onto a licence and get their full test done before they leave college, it’s really helpful because if they go off to (university) it goes on the backburner and then they finish and all of a sudden they need a licence to get a job.” PBA.

Hunter rescued

An injured hunter was rescued by the Life Flight’s Westpac Rescue Helicopter on Tuesday morning after a search in the Marlborough Sounds in the Hills above Tuna Bay. Crew member Logan Taylor says the hunter was found in dense bush after a short search and was lucky to be spotted by the Helicopter crew. A paramedic was winched down to the hunter’s location, treated her for injuries and then winched her back into the Helicopter to be flown to Nelson Hospital where she is being treated for minor injuries. The hunter had spent the night in the bush. The Life Flight Trust is a charity providing air rescue and air ambulance services. It operates the Wellington based Westpac Rescue Helicopter and a nationwide air ambulance service. It relies on support from the public and sponsorship from partners such as Westpac to provide these services.

Makeover for small town A makeover for the Renwick village centre is underway to better reflect the township’s identity as ‘Heart of Wine Country’ and make it more pedestrian-friendly and inviting for locals and visitors. Contractors have installed turf circles, new street banners are going up and planter boxes, wine barrels and seating will be in place this week. The revamp is the work of the Renwick Smart and Connected group working with the Marlborough District Council’s Small Township Programme with the wine barrels and planter boxes

donated by the community. Council’s small townships community advisor Adi James says it has been a real community effort with the Smart and Connected beautification group intent on ensuring the design reflected a local look and feel. Designed and built by volunteers from the Renwick Menz Shed, the planters will mark the entrance and exit to the village centre which will become a more pedestrianfriendly space. More planters are being planned for other locations around the township. The wine barrels were donated

by local wineries while the street banners celebrate Christmas and welcome the Scouts Jamboree to Renwick at the end of this month. Adi says other small township plan initiatives are being discussed for Renwick including improved cycling and walking connections and ‘pocket parks’ as well as some possibilities for improvements to the Renwick Domain. RIGHT: Turf circles have been installed on Renwick footpaths, along with welcome flags for Scouts here for Jamboree.

Chapman complaint dismissed The New Zealand Press Council has adjudicated a complaint by Peter Chapman against the Blenheim Sun and has not upheld the complaint. “Mr Chapman’s suggestion that he was somehow targeted in a more direct way than other candidates in the local government election coverage are not borne out. All candidates were given the same set of questions. There was no bias shown. “The reporter’s additional efforts to get the answers from Mr Chapman were simply journalism at play. It is not only right and proper that journalists pursue answers from public figures, and those seeking public office, but it is a vital part of any democracy. “The questions were not unreasonable. Her approach to the candidates was appropriate and, for a community newspaper, would have given The Sun an opportunity to both inform and entertain its local audience. “The Council finds little relevance in the matters left unpublished, including his criminal conviction report. “Further, it is not improper for

a reporter to put a rumour to a candidate standing for public office and then ignore it in their reporting when it is denied. “Lastly, there is a general tenor of Mr Chapman’s complaint that Ms Bell’s professional conduct and journalism fell short; that she was out to get him. There is no evidence of this. “As a whole, The Sun and Ms Bell should be commended for their coverage of the local government election in their area. The approach taken showed a strong editorial commitment to their local community. “The complaint is not upheld.”

The Sun

one on one with the Sun

Banter with Santa Santa accepted a dinner invitation with Sun publishers Les and Katrina Whiteside and arrived from the North Pole last night. It’s an annual tradition for Santa to visit the Sun in the week leading up to Christmas. Before sitting down to dinner Santa spoke with reporter Celeste Alexander about the past year and what he has in store for Christmas Eve. Most years I find myself waiting impatiently for Santa to arrive at the back door of the Sun office then invite him in for a pre-Christmas banter. This year however he and Mrs Claus made a special one-off trip to Blenheim to meet with Les and Katrina for dinner. It was held at an undisclosed venue for privacy reasons to avoid flash mobs. What was meant to be a straight forward and easy going meal turned into a last minute panic when venison was found to be on the menu but all was sorted when the chef announced salmon and mussels as a replacement. New Marlborough mayor John Leggett was invited for a pre-dinner cocktail, being his first time officially meeting Santa. It was also an opportunity to discuss a revised sleigh route for Blenheim, Seddon and Ward to avoid earthquake damaged areas. “Hmm I see I won’t be able to rest the reindeer at The Forum now that you have the Christmas tree and there’s been some demolition work in Queen Street so where do you suggest I go now John?” Santa asks. “Rest up on the Taylor River in front of the Clubs of Marlborough and ASB Theatre. There’s plenty of grass for them to eat but don’t drink the water, it’s not the greatest at the moment,” John replies. After discussing the earthquake damage Santa brushed the maps aside and was quick to change the subject to the secret recording at council prior to the elections. “The Marlborough District Council has seen its share of controversy but that’s getting ridiculous.

It was a nail biting few months leading up to the election and I ate double the amount of comfort food waiting to hear the results. “I have a few red crosses beside some names from that debacle and whoever was responsible for the recording I am blaming them for the extra 6kg I am carrying around my waist,” Santa says sternly. John finishes his cocktail in one last gulp and takes leave from the table. “Thank you for the introduction Santa, it’s been a pleasure. “Oh...and when you visit the Council chambers on Christmas Eve, I have hidden away a bottle of that whiskey you like. That was one tip Alistair Sowman gave me during his departure,” John winks as he leaves. Santa turns his attention to Les and Katrina. “Les, you and I need to have a chat about your paper. I have said this for the last two years... you need to increase your editions as it’s our favourite read at the North Pole. “Getting it twice a week isn’t enough and I have three elves keen to join the editorial team to help,” he says. “Well Santa, you just don’t know what’s around the corner. Katrina hands Santa a shiny red gift box and wishes him a merry Christmas. “Thank you Katrina you have always been good to me. Before I forget here’s a little something for your family, and for that cheeky son of yours, Jacob, here’s the Ape Escape Playstation game he loved so much as a child. “I can still hear the cries of joy all these

years later,” Santa grins. With a heave and a grunt Santa pushes himself out of the chair and on to his feet. “Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good

night,” Santa sings cheerfully as he strides out the door and over to his sleigh. “Keep up the good work and I will be back Christmas Eve. Ho ho ho.”

Keep children safe around water

Build a sandcastle with your family these holidays and be in to win a prize.

Sandcastle competition for the whole family With Marlborough having an abundance of rivers and beaches, what better way to spend the day than building a sandcastle with the whole family. Better yet, you could win a prize for your efforts!

The Sandcastle Building Competition will be running up to January 31 and is a free family activity. Simply build a sandcastle either at the beach or in a pit during this time, take a photograph of your entry and submit it.

Get creative and use different materials like driftwood, flowers and feathers to decorate it. Register online for free through Sport Tasman’s website and be in to win spot prizes.

The Christmas and summer holidays have just begun and there’s an important message being shared - Keep you and your loved ones safe around water. Summer still has a long way to go so when you’re preparing for your day out at the beach, lake or river, it’s vital we all stop and think about how you’ll keep yourself, and friends and family safe, especially young children who are unable to look after themselves. So far to date this year three under-fives and three children aged five-13years have drowned in New Zealand. Pre-schooler drownings typically occur when a child is allowed out of sight and reach of a caregiver whether it be in the bath, paddling pool, or bucket – or larger bodies of water such as in a beach, lake or river. No children under-five should be drowning in this country. Keep under fives within arm’s reach at all times. Remember, it only takes sixty seconds and around five centimetres of water for a child to drown. Safety tips: • Always empty and store paddling pools and water containers after use and ensure you have a safely fenced play area • Identify water hazards in and around your home and ensure your children can’t

Always keep your children within arms reach when they play in or around water this summer.

reach them. • If you’re in a group of people, ensure you have an active supervision roster so you know who is watching the children at all times • Make sure older children don’t have to take responsibility for younger children • Teach your children water safety behaviour from as soon as they are old enough to understand, things like: ‘Never go near the water unless you’re with a grown up’. Keep safe and enjoy your summer.

Five-star build Luxury boutique accommodation provider, Chateau Marlborough, has a new three-storey wing extension that was opened on October 27. Blenheim based company Scott Construction was awarded the contract which involved 23 of the company’s onsite team and a large number of subcontractors. This is one of the largest ‘block work’ projects ever undertaken in Marlborough (20,000 blocks), was carried out in two stages and included a new three-storey wing on the southern side of the existing hotel, increasing the rooms from 45 to 80. blackRenovations were also carried out to extend the restaurant and bar area and to upgrade some of the existing facilities. Scott Construction general manager John Tovey says the Chateau Marlborough project was one of the most ‘challenging’ in terms of time frame, but overall it went well and was

completed on time. “Stage B was not only on time, but finished 15 days early,” John says. “The biggest challenge was the time frame. Doing a project of this size in the time frame is rare in Marlborough. “Our team rose to the challenge, worked extended hours and had it completed in time for the hotel to be fully operational in time for the tourist market,” he says. John goes on to explain that the new accommodation wing is targeting the ‘coach tour market’. “It’s a high architectural finish being a five star hotel with very high specifications and standards of workmanship expected, and from what I can see it’s been heavily booked since it opened which is ideal. “The client is happy which is the main objective at the end of it,” he says.

Crafar Crouch Construction Ltd ... is a leading Marlborough construction company recognised for service, for commitment to clients and the community. Our mission is to provide the highest standard of problem-solving capability and workmanship to every single project.

Chateau finished ahead of schedule despite tight time frame The Chateau Marlborough project was done in two stages headed by senior foreman Neil Phillips and site foreman Tim Heard who were based on site running the operation. Stage A was the accommodation wing with 36 studio units each with an ensuite which commenced in January, Scott Construction general manager John Tovey says. Architect Ian Krause designed the expansion to mimic the existing architectural style but with a slightly more modern take on it. “The ground and first floor studio units are similar to one another and feature patios on the ground floor and balconies on the first. The top floor has larger grand suites,” he says. Working at height and the design of the roof was a challenge. A temporary roof was built over stage B so work could continue through wet conditions. Other challenges for this stage was the noise consideration and traffic management as the building was situated on two public boundaries. “We worked with Marlborough Roads to manage traffic during construction and had set times we worked in out of consideration for those neighbouring the building,” John says. Stage B got underway in April which was

the expansion of the existing hospitality facilities. One of the accommodation rooms on the ground floor was transformed to a commercial kitchen and venting was installed up through the rooms above to the roof. “A lot of time and effort went into the design and build of a new kitchen extraction system, ensuring its acoustic performance didn’t impact on the rooms above it ducted through,” John says. A new barrel room was built as part of the new restaurant and bar extension as well as an upgrade of the reception, offices and fresh coats of paint throughout. “We were carrying out this work while the hotel was in operation but the staff were very accommodating and it went pretty well without incident,” John adds. Overall stage A was completed in time for the official opening in October and stage B was 13 days early. “A big thanks to all who were involved, Neil, Tim and their teams as well as the subcontractors who were part of this project. The project included most trades you can think of,” John says. “I feel the project went very well and we were lucky with the weather.” It is a credit to all involved.

Don’t let this be you, protect your skin from the sun’s harsh rays.

Protect your skin Sunburn is the painful reddening of the skin after overexposure to sunlight. Avoid getting burned by staying in the shade, especially during peak hours. Cover up with clothes and a wide-brimmed hat and apply broad-spectrum sunscreen to exposed skin (re-apply regularly, especially after sweating or swimming). If sunburned, take a cool shower or bath

and apply cool compresses to affected areas several times daily. Apply aloe gel, but avoid lotions that keep heat in the skin. If the burn is very painful or blistered, or if there are additional symptoms like facial swelling, nausea, fever or chills, rapid pulse, rapid breathing, confusion, dizziness or signs of skin infection, get immediate medical help.

Hot weather can aggravate, prevention is key Prickly heat has been described as being more of an irritation. Dust and exposure to sunlight may trigger this skin condition. Once you start to itch and scratch, it may worsen and spread further. Prickly heat occurs when the body experiences too much heat and the sweat cannot escape from your sweat glands, creating an irritation on the skin that causes the rashes to form. Extremely hot weather aggravates prickly heat.

Symptoms: Small red bumps or rashlike growths that are both itchy and stingy appear on the skin. Irritation usually emerges on the neck, back, armpits, and warm creases and folds of the body. Prevention: To prevent this irritation, always keep the body dry by wiping sweat off and changing into clean, dry clothing as often as possible. This helps minimise friction on the body, and eases itchiness and scratching that can spread and worsen the rashes.

Don’t be sucked in by bugs

Mosquitoes, bees, wasps, ants, spiders…is your skin crawling yet? The itching, swelling and pain of insect bites are due to the venom and other substances biters leave behind. Sometimes there is a delayed reaction with additional symptoms (hives, painful joints, fever and swollen glands). Most people react mildly, and bites can be treated by removing the stinger, if there is one, and washing the area with soap and water, applying topical cream for the itching and a cold pack for the swelling. And if needed take an antihistamine to quell the reaction. A small number of people experience a severe reaction, with symptoms such as swelling of the throat and lips, nausea, respiratory problems, faintness, dizziness, rapid heartbeat, confusion and shock. If this occurs, or you are at risk of this happening, make sure you have your medications

Yealands wine served at Concert Yealands Family Wines became part of the award ceremony held in honour of this year’s Nobel Peace Prize laureate Juan Manuel Santos when their 2015 Yealands Estate Land Made Riesling was selected to be served at the 23rd Annual Nobel Peace Prize Concert. The Nobel Peace Prize Concert is a musical tribute, held annually on 11th December every year since 1994 to honour the year’s Nobel Peace Prize Laureate. Performers from around the world join together in celebration of this respected event, which features music ranging from pop and rock to jazz, classical, blues and country. Peter Yealands says he is extremely proud to have had one of his wines served at this prestigious event. “It’s a great event, honouring people who have made a significant difference in the world. It’s really great to have had our wine served at an event like this.” This year’s Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, the 32nd President of Columbia, was awarded the 2016 Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts negotiating a peace treaty with FARC and other guerrilla groups in the country.

The Marlborough Creative Fibre Guild donated their end of year Christmas Luncheon subsidy to the earthquake appeal organised by the Marlborough Red Cross. A cheque for $430 was handed over recently which will be used for Marlborough earthquake relief efforts.

Bohally helps hospice A school market day has taught Bohally Intermediate students about commerce and the proceeds have benefited the Marlborough Hospice and the earthquake relief fund. Bronwyn Haddon Jones, the school’s year eight team leader, says the Market Day was an initiative introduced in term 4 to provide students with a real life context with the aim of raising money to ‘give back’ to their community. “Students worked through a business plan, researching and deciding on an idea, completing market surveys, tracking expenses, estimating profits, setting up stalls and advertising their final product for sale,” she says. “The students took ownership of their ideas and it quickly became evident that they were motivated to succeed in a competitive market place.” The students selected the charities, initially the hospice, and later decided that a percentage of the money raised would also go towards the Kaikoura Schools Earthquake fund. The stalls were set up at Bohally with all the products made by the children, Bronwyn says. The stalls ranged from sausage sizzle, hair accessories, christmas decorations, jewellery, dog toys, gardening pots, obstacle courses and a variety of food outlets. “Parents were invited and it was great for them to see learning in action. “One child summed up the day by saying ‘It made me want to be a kinder person’.” Both teachers and students enjoyed the experience and already have some ideas for improvement in the future, she says. “All up nearly $4800 profit was made on the day surprising both the students and staff at Bohally.”

Bright lights lead to Christmas As Christmas approaches more and more lights displays are opening for public viewing. St Andrew’s Church on the corner of Alfred and Henry Streets will have its Christmas lights open for viewing on December 21, 22 and 23 from 7.30pm - 10pm. This display is an annual tradition for the church which began three years ago. It was a way of showing children the origins of Christmas and to create a way for families to have fun and learn, Marion Rowe says. There will be a manger scene, lights and music as well as activities for children, a chance to dress up in costumes and have an instant photo taken to take home. Afterwards there is a free hot drink and biscuit. Other Christmas lights displays 6 Purkiss Street 143b Maxwell Road 19 Fulton Street 5 Dunbeath St Brayshaw Park’s Girling Building Hope Drive and Natalie Place 217 Taylor Pass Road 30 Westhaven Place 12 Avery Place (conservatory open to the public) Page St Hilton Place Elsmore Mews - 291-P Waikawa Road - Picton If you would like your Christmas lights display added to the Sun’s list please email celeste@blenheimsun.co.nz by Dec 22, 2016.

Sri Lanka’s cricket star Get in-line for fun bats for NMIT Sri Lankan cricketing great Mahela Jayawardena has re-signed as 2017 brand ambassador for Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology, a coup that gives the institute a competitive boost, chief executive Tony Gray says. “We’re fortunate to have such a superstar batting for NMIT. He has been a regular visitor to NMIT and genuinely believes in the opportunities that NMIT can give fellow Sri Lankans.” Tony says Jayawardena is a household name in Sri Lanka and in India, another important target for overseas student re-

cruitment, and therefore, an influential asset for NMIT. “Having Mahela as brand ambassador will help us show Sri Lankan students that Nelson and Marlborough are the places to come to study and enjoy life at the same time.” The arrangement will see Jayawardena promoting the educational attractions of NMIT in Sri Lanka’s capital, Colombo. He’ll also appear on social media posts for the institute and in NMIT promotional material including banners, posters and videos.

Corey Bovey became the first ever player to score a century in a Senior Grade T20 game during Renwick’s win over the Wairau Cavaliers last weekend. Bovey hit 13 fours and 4 sixes in his unbeaten 108 which was also the first century by a Renwick player in any Senior grade competition game. The Cavaliers’ total had been based around a fine 76 from Geoff Barnett. Celtic were the other winners as Gandharv Sharma and Matt McCormick made light work of Wairau’s 156 total knocking the runs off in only 15 overs with Sharma unbeaten on 70. Marlborough Cricketers take a break over Xmas and New Year with T20 action returning on Wednesday 11th January.

Club secretary Les McKay says the honour was conferred on Maurice for his contributions to Marlborough Harrier Club over many years, including Committee Member, Secretary, President plus he investigated, sought approvals and managed The Molesworth Run since it first ran in 1995. This event is a huge commitment for Maurice and his small committee each year with Maurice’s work starting at the conclusion of each year’s event.
