Festivities abound as Christmas approaches Continued from page 1 Crossroads held its community Christmas dinner on Wednesday night. Coordinator Janette Walker says about 200 people were fed a full Christmas dinner with all the trimmings. It had taken two days to prepare, she says. Crossroads is also serving a community breakfast on Christmas Day, from 8am, and all are welcome, Janette says. Star of the Sea Catholic parish priest Father Pat McIndoe says Christmas is a wonderful time for children and families to celebrate together. He will be taking the 7.30pm Christmas Eve family Mass at

St Mary’s Church at which the children of the parish will be playing a big role. “To me, Christmas is a wonderful feast or holiday which lights up our world and is a beautiful celebration for family. It celebrates the wonderful news that God sent his very own son to share our life and give purpose to our sometimes crazy mixed up world. So it brings light and hope into the darkness that people sometimes see in life. “Also we can share a wonderful celebration for bringing Crossroads co-ordinator Janette Walker welcomes everyone to the family together as we see the centre’s community Christmas dinner before food is served. The Pinks move on from Old Bank By Cathie Bell Craft beer afficianados Mike and Hazel Pink have sold the Old Bank pub in Redwoodtown and are moving on to a new venture. Mike says he has been at the Old Bank for eight years, and it was time for a new challenge. “I got it to where I wanted to, and decided I needed a new challenge.” ‘Every day’ at the Old Bank was a highlight, he says. “I had some wonderful customers, there was no trouble out there. It was a good quality bar, with 100 per cent craft beer, the only bar in Marlborough to do that… I thoroughly enjoyed what I did.” Craft beer was his unique offering right from the start,

Mike says. When he started, it wasn’t really a thing, but that has built up across the district now. “When I first came here, interest was very low. People soon picked up on it and look where they are today.” The Old Bank has been sold, and the idea is that it will continue as a beer bar with Indian food and takeaways as well, he says. The Redwoodtown pub is shut until the new owner gets a liquor licence. Mike and Hazel’s new challenge is the Junction Hotel in Spring Creek, and Mike says it ‘certainly is’ a challenge. “All I can really say is that it presents a very big challenge but I’m up for it.”

Special gift for family that lost their home in fire By Celeste Alexander Local couple Robin and Lisa Pearce lost everything they owned including their beloved Tuamarina home in a house fire two months ago, but a surprise gift from ASB Bank Blenheim last week has brightened their Christmas. The couple was nominated for the ASB Good as Gold Santa Edition by the branch and gifted $10,000, clothing vouchers for their children Holly and Hugh, and flowers. Robin and Lisa were contacted by the branch and asked to go in for a meeting to discuss insurance and their mortgage. “We thought the worst,” Robin laughs. When they arrived staff offered to shout them a coffee and took them to a cafe where a table was reserved for them. “I thought, that’s strange. I said to my wife I’ve never had a bank meeting at a cafe,” Robin says. “Then someone appeared with a camera and the bank’s area and regional manager walked in. It was all very weird,” he says. ASB staff announced that they were receiving the gift and why they felt their family was deserving and gave this statement. “The Pearce family has a heart of gold. As proud members of the Blenheim community, they’re the type of family who always put their hand up to help. “Tragically they recently lost their house to fire, including all of their prized possessions and belongings. After overcoming other challenges including illnesses, their family remains strong. “They have shown incredible spirit in the face of such adversity and our Blenheim branch couldn’t think of anyone more deserving of a break, and wanted to make sure the Pearce family was looked after. So we hope our gift of $10,000 can help bring them a merry Christmas.” Robin and Lisa were very emotional after the announcement, ‘blown away’ and left in disbelief. “Lots of things went through our minds. All I could think was there’s more people out there more worthy than us. “I was a stunned mullet, there were no dry eyes in the place,” Robin says. The family was told to use the money on themselves to ‘brighten their Christmas’. “I can’t say enough about the ASB staff, this is an amazing gift,” he says.

inbrief Relief fund distribution So far, $11,000 has been distributed from the Marlborough Mayoral Earthquake Fund, in its first round of application this week. Marlborough recovery manager Dean Heiford says 34 families and individuals requested assistance.

Lisa and Robin Pearce were very emotional after receiving a $10,000 surprise gift from ASB Blenheim branch. The couple lost their Tuamarina home in a fire two months ago and were nominated for the ASB Good as Gold - Santa Edition.

The Government has passed an Order in Council to speed up the rebuild of State Highway 1 south to Kaikoura, modifying provisions of the Resource Management Act and nine other pieces of legislation, to streamline the recovery work. Transport Minister Simon Bridges says the ‘simplest and most efficient way of getting work done in a major event like this is to remove legislative barriers while giving due consideration to environmental, ecological and cultural impacts’.

Renwick bypass backed

The moment Robin Pearce was told he and his wife were receiving $10,000.

The Marlborough District Council has backed a community compromise for trucks to not use two Renwick residential streets at night, agreeing to trial it until the end of February when it would be reviewed before the beginning of the district’s grape harvest. Councillors were told that other solutions, including reduced speed limits on the state highways through Renwick, would also be investigated. Signage for 80kms on Middle Renwick road has been put in place.

Their programme was designed to showcase Marlborough’s capability to successfully host conferences and incentive events.

Company replaces stolen radios

Tait Communications has come to the party for the Marlborough Kaikoura Rural Fire Authority, donating new mobile radio equipment to the Kekerengu volunteers after their gear was stolen. Six two-way radios and the base station radio plus battery pack were stolen from the Kekerengu Community Centre shed after the November 14 earthquake isolated the community. Tait Communications has provided four VHF radios, and four PRS radios, along with all the associated equipment, to Kekerengu’s firefighters. Kekerengu Fire Force Controller John Philipson says he and his crew have been disgusted to think that anyone would take their equipment, let alone at a time

when the east coast is in the middle of a catastrophic event. Marlborough Kaikoura Principal Rural Fire Officer Richard McNamara applauds the gesture by Tait Communications, saying that lives literally depend on two-way radios. “Tait picked up on the theft, and asked if they could help. They thought it was a cheap shot, the theft, and wanted to put it right for a country fire squad who are right in the middle of it.” General manager of Tait Communications’ New Zealand business, Trevor Laughton, says the company was pleased to ensure the Kekerengu volunteer force is once again well equipped to deal with emergencies in their community.

“Our volunteer fire fighters do a vital job in rural communities, often in difficult conditions. To manage those risks it’s essential that our volunteers and their officers have fail-safe communications equipment.” Trevor says it is incredibly disappointing to hear that thieves had stolen the Kekerengu equipment because all the emergency services, and those who looked after electricity and water supply and other services, need their mobile radios to do their jobs and to keep everyone safe. “Tait knows from the earthquakes and other disasters that it’s on our worst days, when there’s a lot of uncertainty, that a mobile radio can be an absolute life saver because it’s engineered to keep operating in the most trying conditions.”

Fire risk is rising heat should take the utmost care as a spark can be lethal. “Chainsaws, mowers, harvesters, grinders, even vehicles being driven through long grass; if possible it’s best done during the cool of the morning or evening rather than in the intense midday heat.” The Wither Hills Farm Park is a popular recreational walking area but people are reminded to stay safe in the summer months: • Anyone going onto the Wither Hills Farm Park should be aware of the potential danger from fire. • Particular care is advised during hot, windy weather. In these conditions, users are advised to use only the lower Forest Hills or Rotary Lookout walking tracks. • Early mornings and evenings are the safest times for walking during hot, dry weather.

By Cathie Bell Firefighters are warning people to take care as the summer heat hits and grass dries out on the hills and countryside. Marlborough Kaikoura Principal Rural Fire Officer Richard McNamara says grass fires are a real risk in the Marlborough district. Four fire crews and a water tanker were needed on Wednesday to deal with a fire on the lower Wither Hills where a metal grass trimming blade flicked a spark which ignited the dry ground cover. Richard says it is all too easy for this to happen and extreme care is necessary especially as there’s been so much grass growth during the spring. Road cone on Xmas tree

Awesome event

Think you need to stress less mate relax. We have a wonderful life in Seddon and get a lot done and are lucky to have no worries or problems. May we remind you there are many more people other than you that care about our community as well. So you have a good xmas and happy new year and here’s to less earthquakes.

What an awesome event the Clubs of Marlborough Kids Christmas Party was. Many thanks to all those involved for organising a great morning!

We will be back Motorhome tourist called into cafe in Seddon on Sunday, older lady and younger lady quite rude and abrupt, drove onto Ward and lady serving lovely and friendly. We know they’ve been through a lot with earthquakes, we were trying to support you. Attitude with customers is a big thing. Love South Island, heading home to Hastings after travelling for three months. We will be back.

I laughed to see someone had put an orange road cone on top of the Xmas tree in Seymour square. Good to see a sense of humour. Lights still working fine, none the worse for it.

Stress less

Stop, go people With all the road works going on in the district, the stop - go people are hard to see as they merge into the back ground with all the dayglow orange eg: cones, warning signs, machinery, etc could they be in a different colour . . Say bright blue or green ? Something to standout from the surroundings.

Thanks guys Have to agree with comments on Christchurch detour. I would also like to acknowledge the drivers from Renwick Transport who always seem to manage to slow down and veer a little when it is safe, when they pass me walking my dog on Highway 35. Thanks guys.

Doggy dooz & horses in rivers As I responsibly carry my doggy bags home I wonder why riders can leave mountains of horse poo along the Taylor reserve tracks & river! Ban them or make their riders clean it up! I also recently spent $850 in vet fees when my dogs’ main pad was sliced open by glass in the river requiring emergency surgery. These issues are much more concerning than biodegradable dog poo!

txt talk of the week What an eyesore

Re “ Doggy Dooz” texts: Bins with smaller openings (to deter general household waste bags) made especially for putting bags of pooz in are not unheard of! As per my text a couple of years ago - after spending time in London, specifically Greenwich park where my friends walked their dogs, I was impressed with these bins and the frequent close placing of them - and ‘voila’ the 100% use of them - it makes so much sense to make it easy for dog people to be good, and not slack, citizens! Lollyrock.

Thank goodness someone has finally weeded the traffic islands at Boyce St, Middle Renwick Rd intersection. What an eyesore it was, weeds bigger than the plants!

COUNCIL NEWS Christmas message 2016

Where’s the best place for a dip? Planning to go to your favourite beach or river for a swim over the summer holidays? It’s easy to check the water quality of your favourite spot before you head out because Council’s recreational bathing sampling programme is up and running again, with weekly samples collected from 22 sites across

Marlborough. Check the latest results on council’s website using this link: www.marlborough.govt. nz/Recreation/Swimmingand-Boating/SwimmingLocations.aspx So, whether you are home or away on holiday, it’s easy to check whether the water is safe for a dip.

Ageing Positively in Marlborough – Music will keep you young

For most of us, Christmas brings the chance to relax and enjoy the company of our friends and families. I know that, after a busy election year, I am very much looking forward to this break. But for some people this will undoubtedly be a tough Christmas. For those who have lost their homes to the earthquake or who have experienced personal and financial losses this will not be the easiest time. We all pray for an end to the after-shocks. I am proud of the way the region has shown its resilience but I also know that, for some, the stress levels can rise when there is so much to deal with and I ask that we all remain supportive in any way possible. It is some comfort to be able to report that the Marlborough District Council has reached the year’s end in a secure financial position, well placed to play its part in the long job of repairing the region’s vital infrastructure. May I also take this moment to express special thanks to those who have served us so well this year – everyone involved in the civil defence response – and also to those who we rely upon over the holiday season; our emergency services, our hospital and rest home staff, those who keep our essential services going. I will be spending this Christmas with Anne and with my daughter and a son now living in the UK; it will be the first chance I’ve had to share time with them since the election so I am looking forward to seeing them and recharging the batteries before the new year begins. I wish you all a safe and happy Christmas, John Leggett, Mayor of Marlborough

Water Ski Lane Closure Ngakuta Bay The Harbour Master will close the water ski access lane in Ngakuta Bay between December 29 2016 and January 7 2017. Scout Jamboree activities will be underway in Ngakuta Bay during this time. All other water ski access lanes in the Queen Charlotte Sound will remain operational.

Anyone of a certain age in Marlborough will remember Price’s dance band; if you stepped onto the floor at a dine-and-dance, wedding, 21st birthday or at a country hall, it was quite likely to be Terry Price’s Dance Band pumping out the music. Today, Terry, now aged 85, and his wife Pam at age 70, are still entertaining. Their audiences are the rest homes of Marlborough where residents are often those who were out on those dance floors in the 1960s and 70s. Terry and Pam visit the Waterlea Resthome and Springlands Lifestyle Village on alternative months and Bethsaida twice a

year. As well, they often play at the day respite sessions offered by Alzheimers Marlborough. The Prices are members of the Marlborough Scottish Society and Pipe Band; Terry is Pipe Major and Pam the historian, currently compiling the 100 year history of Marlborough pipe bands. Terry can still summon enough air in the lungs to play the bagpipes at the weddings of family and friends – his star turn was as piper at the Lake Timara wedding of Dan Carter and Honor Dillon. As grandparents, Terry and Pam are very involved with the younger generation; and perhaps Terry has already shared

his wise words with them – live each day as though it will be your last because one day you will be right!

International shipping delays have held up the delivery of materials for the new water play area for toddlers replacing the old paddling pool on the Picton foreshore but we hope it can be finished in time for the warm weather in the New Year. We’re waiting for the special soft fall matting surface product for the splash pad to arrive from the UK. It will be installed as soon as it is available, hopefully in early January. The toilet block closest to the play area, just beneath the Picton Museum, will be better signposted and a new unit is being installed to extend the facilities at the eastern end of the foreshore at London Quay. 5 MINUTES WITH: Mathias Møller Jespersen

Q A Q A Q A

From Denmark, lead kayak guide for Driftwood Eco Tours

What’s your most annoying habit? I tend to take a discussion a bit too far. If I know I’m right, I’ll usually not give way. One of my best holidays was..... The five and a half months I spent in Canada, and especially the three months in the Yukon, volunteering and working for Muktuk Adventures, bringing guests out into the Canadian winter on dogsleds. My guilty TV pleasure is ..... Friends, I simply can’t get enough of that!

Q A Q A Q A

What’s your favourite meal? Danish Smørrebrød, which is an open sandwich loaded with good stuff. What’s your fondest childhood memory? The many family canoe trips we did during summer and going fishing and tramping with my dad and younger brother. What’s your greatest fear? That something happens to the people that I love, while I’m away.

Q A Q A Q A

How do you want to be remembered? I don’t know ... I guess as a pretty cool guy, who did some good while he was around. Who would you love to share a meal with and why? There are so many incredible people that I would like to dine with ... the American writer and mountaineer Jon Krakauer. What is the one thing people don’t know about you? That I’m a terrible loser, and that I’m super stubborn.

Patients urged to book doctors early to get medicine Doctors are busy in the holiday build-up, just like other businesses, and patients need to get in early to get their prescriptions filled before they go away. Marlborough Primary Health chief executive Beth Tester says many practices around Marlborough are experiencing high demand for appointments and some were operating with fewer

GPs while they went through a transition of staff. General practices keep some same-day appointments available for emergencies, but people with less urgent issues can expect to wait for an appointment. This means it is even more important to book ahead. In accordance with safe prescribing practice, patients on more than three types of medication are

required to see their GP every three months to have their prescriptions renewed. Scott Street Health Lead Practice Nurse Alison Bond says some patients are calling at the last minute and finding it difficult to get an appointment the same day or day after. Although it is frustrating for patients, especially as they may have

been able to get appointments at short notice in the past, the reality is that they should no longer have this expectation, as appointments slots are often full, due to a shortage of GPs. Lead pharmacist Brian Powell from Poswillo’s pharmacy reiterates the message to make appointments in good time for prescription renewals. “Make a note in your calendar to phone your family doctor’s 14 days out

from when you need an appointment and book it in,” he says. Pharmacies can supply emergency supplies of medication, but only enough to cover three days at a time and there is a cost to the patient, he says. “Our hands are tied because three days is not a lot of medication, and if you want to go away, it might not be enough.”

GARDENING

THIS WEEK WITH WALLY RICHARDS

Merry Christmas OW! N E L A - ON S S T E .nz K C I T ticket.co i . D w R w I w B e Book at EARLY round th a s e t i s i or at ion ough reg Marlbor

Here we are again with the last article for 2016 and just before Christmas; also the longest daylight day of the year was on the 21st. This means we are in the very middle of the gardening year and from here on hopefully we have a couple of months of real summer. The weather this spring has been not good for gardening but has kept a number of insect pests numbers down. Once the weather settles and stays in a more constant temperature then the pests will come out in force. Any sign of them, spray as soon as possible Super Neem Tree Oil with Key Pyrethrum added, just before sunset. Spread either Neem Tree Granules or Neem Tree Powder on the soil under plants to give them extra protection. An elderly gardener called this week to show me a corn plant that was about 40cm tall and already going to seed, producing the male flowers without any sign of cobs forming. The reason for this was the weather with not sufficient sunlight hours, too many cloudy skies and hazy ones when not cloudy and temperature fluctuations putting the plants into stress. I would like to know what is causing the misty haze as it has changed our bright blue skies to milky blue and at night it is only the brightest stars that are seen, even on a clear night.

These conditions do not bode well for growing plants as they need good hours of direct sunlight for their energy to grow and produce food or flowers. Gardening is always a challenge and no matter how experienced you are, you will win some but also have your losses and failures. You can reduce weather problems by having a glasshouse or tunnel house which allows you a greater range of gardening activities, extended seasons and a better situation to propagate seeds or cuttings. Which reminds me to suggest for you to grow a couple of capsicums and chili peppers in 20 litre containers, you can get them established now and fruit this season then, with protection of a glasshouse or similar, they will keep nicely through the winter and then produce again next season. You will need to apply more food such as sheep manure pellets, Bio Boost and also during the productive season my Secret Tomato food. A few gardeners that grow cacti have been using the straight tomato food on their plants during summer and with excellent growth results. I have also used it on my Dragon Fruit Cacti and it produces great new growth. Some have also fed their palms during summer and are also pleased with the new fronds as a result. Have a Happy Christmas, do some gardening and lets see what the New Year brings. Wally Richards

Cemetery earthquake damage

A large abseil tower like this one is being constructed at Renwick School for the Scout Jamboree.

Scout build begins The Renwick Domain has been a hive of activity in the past week with just over a week until Jamboree. Troop containers have started to arrive and troop marquees are being put up. The site is looking more defined with roadways and subcamps, the showers are almost finished, and the toilet trailers are arriving. The other bases are getting their infrastructure as well such as the abseil tower which is being constructed at the Renwick School and the Renwick Pod gets it’s marquee at Foxes Island.

A Ward resident visited a family member’s gravesite recently and came across damage to the cemetery following the 7.8 earthquake last month. He estimates around 20 per cent of the headstones were damaged by being moved, tipped over or breaking apart. “Fortunately our family member’s wasn’t, being that it is relatively new but it’s sad seeing the others damaged. It’s not something people have seen,” he says.

Gatland nails his red It was interesting to see Wales coach Warren Gatland has said he turned down the offer to coach the Chiefs in Super Rugby which may make appointing the next All Blacks coach tougher. With current national coach Steve Hansen confirming he will vacate his post after the 2019 World Cup in Japan, it looks like the New Zealand Rugby Union was transitioning Gatland as a potential successor. The NZRU has long held the belief that the coach has to be in New Zealand and most importantly, a New Zealander to get

the top job. Current All Blacks assistant coach Ian Foster has indicated he’ll go for the top job in 2019 though his track record when he coached the Chiefs was mediocre at best. It appears the NZRU was happy to put some eggs in the Gatland basket, now some of them may be spread to Dave Rennie or Highlanders coach Jamie Joseph - both of whom have had considerable success at Super Rugby level. Gatland has stated he won’t break his contract with Wales

which is admirable. The good thing is, there is no shortage of quality New Zealand coaches around the world but that global expansion may be what is concerning the NZRU. Fortunately they have two years before they have to make a decision. One thing for certain though is that the preference has always been for a coach in New Zealand who has a good understanding of the current crop of All Blacks. It’s unlikely Gatland would have that from his vantage point in Wales.

Finn a chip off the old block By Cathie Bell Blenheim teenager Finn Sloan is following his grandfather Robbie Brownlee’s path and is cutting a swathe through the competitive woodchopping field. Finn competed in the Boys/Novice Underhand Chops at last month’s Marlborough A&P Show, coming first and third in two events, and also placed well at the Nelson A&P show two weekends later. He has now been selected as the South Island representative in the Tuatahi junior development squad to compete at next April’s Sydney Royal Easter Show, the premier event for woodchopping. The squad is sponsored by Tuatahi Axes, owned by Masterton axeman Eddie Fawcett, who makes competition quality axes that are supplied around the world. Finn says he got into woodchopping after finishing cricket, and watching his grandfather.

King & Queen of Withers

“I’d had enough of playing cricket, I thought I’d give something a little bit quicker a go, and yeah… I’m getting there.” Robbie, who captained the New Zealand veterans’ team this year, says he didn’t push Finn into the sport, but woodchopping runs in the family ‘like most sports’. “Two or three of them have wanted a go, I thought it was better to wait until they were a bit older. “Once he started, he couldn’t put a bloody axe down, it’s a bit like a disease. They say it’s not a bug, it’s a disease.” The family’s woodshed is certainly full now, with Finn saying they had to build another woodshed to store all the wood he and Robbie have cut up between them while training. Most New Zealand axemen cut poplar at events, but Australia uses harder woods, Robbie says, so he has Finn trainFinn Sloan is off to Sydney to compete in woodchopping, ing on macrocarpa logs as well. with grandfather Robbie Brownlee.
