Kane surprises with early arrival Story and photo by Celeste Alexander Baby Kane Haycock could not wait for his due date and instead arrived two weeks early on New Year’s Day, making him Marlborough’s first baby for 2017. His arrival came as a surprise to parents Jason and Bella Haycock and was almost missed by Jason who had planned to head out commercial fishing around that time. Continuted on page 2 Bella Haycock pictured with her newborn son Kane, Marlborough’s first baby for 2017.

Picton family thrilled with New Year son Story and photo by Celeste Alexander “I was meant to leave for fishing on December 30 so I’m glad I didn’t now. We were surprised but happy it all went well,” he says. Bella had been scheduled for a cesarean section on January 21 but began experiencing contractions. She visited her midwife who found her to be in labour and sent Bella into theatre. “All the theatre staff had to be called in as there was no one there at the time. I felt sorry for them as it was their holiday,” Jason laughs. Kane Parry Haycock was born at 9.30pm weighing 3.39kg, measuring 49cm in length and was in perfect health. Proud big sister Samantha (2) was smitten with her brother and very excited to see him for the first time.
Kane’s birth is the second memorable birthday in the family. Samantha was born July 4, known as Independence Day of the United States and now Kane’s on New Year’s Day. The family is back home in Picton settling into their new routine. New to the region Jason and Bella are excited to be setting permanent roots after arriving last October. Picton is home to Jason who has been in Japan for the past 22 years teaching English. Bella, from Taiwan, met Jason in a whirlwind romance and the couple decided Marlborough would be a great place to raise their family. “After being in Japan for so long it was time to come home. The lifestyle here is wonderful and we are excited to be back near family,” Jason says. Bella and Jason Haycock with daugter Samantha (2) and baby Kane.
Boaties chase orca, prompts warning The Department of Conservation is asking boaties in the Marlborough Sounds to give orca space in the water and not be reckless around them. It follows some concerning boating behaviour around a pod of orca that spent considerable time feeding and resting in Queen Charlotte Sound at the weekend. DOC ranger Aubrey Tai says DOC rangers observed most boaties behaved respectfully around the orca but a few boaties were speeding up to them
and chasing and cutting in front of them. “There are clear rules about boating around marine mammals to ensure they are able to rest and feed undisturbed. “Orca are part of the dolphin family but are considered whales under the Marine Mammals Protection Regulations, meaning boats must maintain a 50-metre distance from them. “No more than three boats can be within 300 metres of any whale, dolphin or seal at one time.”

Many of the boaties were spoken to by the DOC rangers. “It appeared people weren’t deliberately disturbing marine mammals, or even realised that they were doing it, rather they were just keen to get close to have that special encounter,” Aubrey says. “We encourage boaties to enjoy orca and other marine mammals but we ask people to give them space to behave naturally. You tend to see more interesting behaviour that way.”

David Taylor and Pania Huntley are gearing up for the New Zealand Rally Championship that kicks off in April. Photo by Rebecca Maling.
Ready to rally By Celeste Alexander Marlborough Car Club members David Taylor and Pania Huntley are gearing up to head into some serious rally action as part of the 2017 Brian Green Property Group New Zealand Rally Championship. David, who will be at the wheel of his 94 Honda Civic has teamed up with co-driver Pania to head into their first NZRC. The team mates are excited and nervous as they prepare their strategy ahead of the first round in Otago on the weekend of April 8-9. The NZRC is a six round championship including events in Otago, Whangarei, Canterbury, Coromandel, Waitomo Rally and finishing as the season Grand Finale with the return of Rally New Zealand at the new host venue of Tauranga. This international event will see top rally drivers come to NZ and
it’s rumoured that NZ’s Hayden Paddon will also be competing, David says. “We are stepping into a serious NZ rally championship. To have the likes of Hayden Paddon competing shows the level of interest this event attracts. “We will be racing routes like the road in Tauranga which the WRC would race on if it comes to NZ. That alone is super exciting,” David says. David and Pania will be also competing in the ‘Rookie’ class, for all first time competitors in this event. “It doesn’t matter how fast your car is or how experienced you are, if you are a first time competitor you are a rookie. What will make it interesting is that the youngest in this class is 17 and I’m 62 so I’m looking forward to seeing how we go.
“The goal is to complete the four rounds we have entered and to be competitive in our class,” David says. While the NZRC is a goal they both share, David and Pania are long time supporters of the sport. David’s interest in motorsport began at a young age. Growing up in Britain he started out as a marshal at age 10. “I could never afford it or give the time to be part of it but I was always helping out where I could,” he says. After moving to Blenheim five years ago David joined the Marlborough Car Club and started out rallying in a red Lada with a Nissan 2L turbo. He’s competed in autocross, gravel and street sprints and has since upgraded to his Honda Civic which is designed for the gravel. Pania’s introduction to rally was
with rally legend, the late Possum Bourne. “I was working an after-school job for Subaru dealership LK Motors, where the Motorcentre is now. The NZRC used to include Marlborough in its championship round and because Possum was driving for Subaru, he used our workshop. “I got to go for a ride with Possum and loved it. I was 19 and that was where it began for me,” she says. Pania went on to co-drive a number of sprints with local drivers and took part in her first rally on the back of the Silver Fern Rally in 2014, winning her first trophy for second place in their class. “Doing the NZRC is something I have always wanted to do, so when David asked me to sit with him, I jumped at the chance,” she says.

Iconic Picton business changes hands By Glenise Dreaver Mark Watson is well remembered in Picton where, as Constable Watson, he set up the Combined Adolescent Challenge Training Unit Support (CACTUS) training scheme. It has, in the years since then, gone from strength to strength and seen a huge drop in youth offending in the town. Family illness however, meant that Mark and wife Viv, also well known as a local hairdresser, left Picton in 2007. They returned to their original home territory on the West Coast. Circumstances change however and last year, Mark left the police and the couple looked for a new opportunity. Because they loved Picton and had kept their home here, they looked around and discovered the iconic mini-golf business was for sale. Ironically, the current owners Pete and Annie Bishell had bought the business some six years ago from Raelene and Bill Rainbird and Mark, and Raelene are second cousins. “They’ll be round to give us a hand and keep an eye on things,” Mark says, adding that their own family will be involved too. Their three daughters are also likely to be seen helping. One change however will be in the name. It will be called Round’A’Mini Golf Picton Ltd. “It’s time to a rebrand,” he says. Mark and Viv are quick to acknowledge the help that Pete and Annie have given them as they worked to start-up day on Wednesday January 4, “and we wish them well in their new endeavours”.

Renwick householders have managed to use water efficiently this summer but a warning has been given to avoid restrictions by continuing water conservation. usage below 3,000m3/day we should make it through the summer with decent water quantities and pressure,” he says. Over the weekend Renwick’s water usage spiked to over this number for the first time this year. “The Council will be forced to apply water restrictions if this continues, so let’s all work together to avoid this happening,” John says.

Sharon Russell, her son in law Shane Keating and her daughter Gina Keating of ‘Always At Heart’, will be performing at this weekend’s Gourmet Paradise Country Music Awards. Photo provided.
Over 200 entries for country music awards By Celeste Alexander There are only weeks to go before the Gourmet Paradise Country Music Awards is held in Blenheim, and for the 200 singers that have entered, the anticipation is building. The weekend long event kicks off on Friday, January 20 with a ‘Showcase’ event at 7.30pm. Performing at the Showcase will be some of the judges as well as Always at Heart, the overall winner from the 2015 awards and winner of the ‘Entertainer of the Year Award’ in Rotorua last year. Allan Barron will also be one of the acts as well as Peter Cairns, former Gold Guitar winner and rhythm guitarist for the whole of the awards weekend. On Saturday the awards auditions get underway from 8.30am and carrying on through to Sunday till 3pm.
Saturday night the Rockn Roll Singing Competitions will be held, back by popular demand, leading into the main event on Sunday, the last of the auditions and the finals concert at the ASB Theatre at 6.45pm. Last year’s overall winner Toni Biddle was scheduled to return to perform but due to work commitments, she is unable to attend. Replacing her will be another fantastic performer, guest artist Sharon Russell who is a member of Always at Heart. Sharon has won the senior overall at the awards on two occasions on her own and once with the group called “Unfinished Business”. Organisers are thrilled to have her involved. Tickets for the auditions cost $5 each, and entry into the final concert cost $27 for adults, $25 for senior citizens, and children under 15-years $12.

Raupo Café and Restaurant Bienvenue, and welcome to Raupo Café and Restaurant. Situated in the heart of Blenheim Raupo Café and Restaurant has excelled at combining both the Café style day service and specialty French patisserie Le Delice with European style evening dining. Le Delice Patisserie located near the entrance, French music, and of course the French influence in the cuisine is always a delight, from their popular Eggs Benedict for breakfast, Croque Madame at lunch and famous Waranui Ribeye Steak at dinner. Other favourites include the Chocolate Brioche and Macarons Tart from the patisserie, Chocolate Mousse and the daily
dessert special. “I always like to keep the menu fresh and interesting” Stephane says. “I am always buying quality fresh produce daily and ensuring all meals are produced to a high standard.” Stephane is currently working on new menu ideas which he plans to introduce towards the end of April. “It’s all about listening to the customers, taking on board any suggestions and always striving to give exceptional customer service.” Raupo Café and Restaurant has a number of seating options. Not only were their friends and family able to visit them, but they were also shining ambassadors to locals wanting to learn more about Scouts.
Over the 10 days 4000 scouts from all around the world called Renwick home. Over this course of time it was estimated the scouts consumed 2.2 tonnes of sausages, 1.4 tonnes of cheese as well as 16 kilometres of cling wrap which held thousands of packed lunches. In addition millions of dollars have been pumped into Marlborough through Jamboree and visitor spending and the management committee wishes to thank the region for being “welcoming and accommodating”. More than 25 flights departed Marlborough Airport on Saturday, carrying over 1,200 people to destinations ranging from Invercargill to Auckland while staff remain behind to finish the pack up of the site.

Couple transform former rest home The former Heatherlea House in Picton has finally been given a new lease of life. Bob and Glenda Skinner talk to Glenise Dreaver about their new venture.
The former rest home for the elderly, Heatherlea House sat empty in a prime spot in High Street for eight years. There was more than one breakin by vandals and locals despaired over its wasted potential. Yet, says Bob Skinner, he knew immediately that it was perfect for the backpackers’ hostel he and wife Glenda were hoping to establish. “I walked in the front door and by the time I walked out the back door, I knew we would buy it.” He can’t believe that no one saw its potential and was so confident he bought it without going back to Glenda to check that it was OK. Fortunately, she agreed. Within seven weeks of their moving down from Katikati Heatherlea, with its original twenty bedrooms, was transformed into the Alicante, a hostel
able to house 44 backpackers. There are dormitories with bunks, with three, four and five-bed options, and family and guest rooms with double beds. This is no rough and ready transformation. Glenda’s eye for elegance and style and Bob’s skills as a carpenter and handyman have created a hostel with an air of sophistication that hits the visitor as soon as they walk through the door. The influence, the carefully chosen fabrics and colours, show a strong Spanish influence, not surprising as the name makes it clear. Alicante is the name of a picturesque Spanish port with wine country behind it, and the well-travelled Glenda points out that’s appropriate for Picton. She struggles for words to describe the place Picton and the Sounds already has in her heart.
“This is such a beautiful place. It just blows me away.” Her eye for beauty is allied to a keenly-honed sense of style. She has never trained as an interior decorator but admits that she can put rooms together well. “I don’t know why. I can buy things and just see where they should go and what it’s going to look like.” “We have renovated houses, and in the last two years built a lovely barn house, with terracotta concrete floors in Katikati. “We put in a butlers kitchen, had 160 year old redwood on the walls which took a long time sussing. We started growing our orchard and we had a second house where we started the backpackers.” Overcoming these challenges got them thinking she said, that they would like to move and go a bit bigger.
“What better place to do this but in Picton, ideal tourist destination, the gateway to the South Island? “It’s a lovely town nestled in the hills with outstanding views.” The couple have been blown away by the level of local support, being stopped in the street by strangers welcoming them and congratulating them on what they have done. “Some people even knocked at the door and asked to see what we had done.” Bob also has high praise for the Marlborough District Council which has ensured the consent processes flowed without unnecessary delays. This, he says, was helped by the fact that the building was designed as a rest home, meaning the original specifications were at a higher level than is required for a backpackers’ hostel.

Free skipper training Getting out on the water with family and friends is something enjoyed by many in Marlborough, but knowing how to keep you and your passengers safe is crucial. Free skipper training workshops are being offered to anyone wanting to learn more about safe boating. Whether you are new to boating or looking to refresh your skills, this is a fantastic opportunity for people of all ages to get on the water and learn safe boating skills from experienced professional skippers. These workshops are available thanks to the collaboration between Harbour Master Luke Grogan, Marlborough Coastguard Operations Manager Dave St John and Maritime New Zealand who have joined forces to provide them in Picton. Participants will spend a few hours with Dave who is a qualified maritime tutor before heading off on a Coastguard or harbour patrol vessel for practical tuition on-board. The workshops are relaxed and friendly, the course is free and lunch is provided. Any questions you have about safe boating will be answered. So what are you waiting for? Courses are run regularly over summer and you can book your space by calling the Harbours office. To secure your spot on the next available free Skipper Training workshops on Saturday January 14 and 21, 2017 don’t hesitate to book today by calling the Harbours office on (03) 520 7400.

Swap old lifejackets The key boating message this year is Prep, Check, Know. Prep your boat, check your gear and know the rules. When preparing your gear check that your lifejackets are not old, damaged or worn. If they are, trade them in for a significant discount on a brand new, modern Hutchwilco lifejacket. The ‘Old4New’ Lifejacket Van will be at Marlborough Watercraft on Saturday January 21 between 8am - 11am. With five lifejacket styles to choose from (including one for kids), there’s no reason not to be safe on the water.

Dash for medals
Local speedskater Erin Green (11) with two bronze medals she won at a recent national speedskating event in Auckland.
Story and photo by Celeste Alexander Two local girls travelled to Auckland after Christmas to compete at a national speed skating championship and came away with much to smile about. Erin Green and Gracie Wickens competed at the National Road and 100m Flat Track champs doing extremely well in their races. Gracie made it into her final for all races in her grade (primary), one of the biggest grades in the competition, and managed to beat her personal best by four seconds. This was an incredible feat for Gracie who has been skating for six months, while some of her competitors had been skating much longer. She didn’t win a medal but was thrilled with how well she did. Erin competed in the 200m road track time trial where she came in fourth, just missing out on the medal. In the other road races she
Gracie Wickens
won bronze in the 1000m, fourth in the 500m and fifth in the 1500m. In her 300m flat track time trial she came in fourth again just missing the medal but made the finals in the 400m and the 800m where she won another bronze. Her coach and mother Roxanne Green says she has done well coming from “such a small club”. “I’m really proud of both
Gracie and Erin for how well they did at the nationals. Going forward Erin’s goal is to try out for the NZ Oceania team and to do this she will have to keep working on her technique and fitness. In preparation for the nationals Erin trained up to six times per week at the Blenheim Roller Skating Club track, she practiced at the Marlborough Lines Stadium 2000 for flat track and at the Marlborough Kart Club for the road track component. “We are really grateful to the stadium and kart club for their support,” Roxanne says. Erin also goes over to Nelson and down to Timaru to get in some training with larger groups. Timaru has the NZ speed skating coach, Bill Begg and his wife Cheryl and daughter Nicole who are both world champions. “Both Erin and I have learned so much from these trips,” she says.
