Fire danger By Cathie Bell An arsonist is putting Blenheim lives at risk, the region’s fire chief warns. A series of fires over the weekend were definitely ‘part of a sequence and are suspicious’, Marlborough Kaikoura Rural Fire Authority Principal Fire Officer Richard McNamara says. He urges all people to keep their eyes out and report any suspicious activity. Fire bug threatens Blenheim lives and homes Continued from page 1 There have been seven suspicious fires around Blenheim, centring on the Taylor River Reserve and Wither Hills area. One fire in the trees near West Mount School, Blenheim, meant fire crews battled thick and at times toxic smoke to contain and control the deep seated fire in an old landfill site, Richard says. “They look more like coal miners than fire fighters.” The complexity of the fire and location meant firefighters couldn’t dig in to the ground in some areas, he says. “It is on an old landfill site so a large scale sprinkler system has been set up and is now running. We have also created a bare earth break between the fire perimeter and the houses on Taylor Pass Road using a large grader. This has been wet down all day to minimise any dust getting into

the houses and we will continue to do this.” Crews spent the afternoon mopping up and checking for hotspots, digging and filling holes with water, all in temperatures about 35 degrees Celsius and winds gusting up to 70km/h. “All of the crew members are volunteers and have given up all of their weekends to help out.” Richard says volunteers give up their family time to safeguard their communities and they need to be acknowledged. “It’s been a particularly trying time over the past few days. We’ve had to battle fires in 35 degree heat, with winds up to 70 kmh – these are hellish conditions to work in and the community needs to be aware of how much work is going on and for that to be recognised.” Richard says firefighters are working closely with the police and forensic fire investigators to identify

the arsonist. He urged people to keep a lookout and to report anything suspicious to the police as soon as possible. “We’d ask people to also help if they have any information at all, no matter how trivial it seems, to please get in touch with police. They’ll gratefully accept that information. “We have a reasonable amount of evidence, but it’s about being able to corroborate it and connect it. It’s collaborative work and we rely heavily on the NZ Police to do that.” A total fire ban remains in place across Marlborough. Police would still like to hear from anyone who may have information which would assist the investigation into the fires. Please call Blenheim Police on 03 578 5279. Information can also be provided anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Workshop aims to help ‘draw with more awareness’ By Celeste Alexander Adults wanting to draw on the skills they already have and learn to “see as an artist” are encouraged to attend a workshop by Kylie Fleur. A local artist, Kylie held this hugely popular workshop last year and is again offering it as part of the Marlborough Art Society’s ‘Spring-Summer Series’ of classes and workshops. Titled Drawing on Skills, the workshop runs from February 1-22 on a Wednesday night from 7-9pm, and costs $120

per person. It’s aimed at adults aged 18 and over and is suitable for all skill levels. By presenting Drawing on Skills, Kylie aims to equip people with the necessary tools to enable them to draw more realistically through a series of exercises. “This workshop is the ideal place to start for people wanting to learn to draw. From people who are able to draw a stick figure to someone who is more established in their drawing, this will continue to

build on the skills they already have. “It’s my intention to help to increase people’s ability to draw realistically. “It’s about seeing than simply making marks on the paper. Be prepared to see more deeply and profoundly and start drawing with more awareness,” she says. To register for the Drawing on Skills workshop contact workshop coordinator Helen Ballinger on 02102678711 or email workshops@marlboroughartsociety. com. Local artist Kylie Fleur.

Wither Hills closed The Marlborough District Council has closed all Wither Hills Farm Park tracks until further notice due to the forecast gale-force winds, combined with the fire risk due to very dry conditions. Signs are being put up at the track entrances.

Missing man found A 36-year-old US tourist, reported missing over the weekend, has been found on board a charter yacht in the Queen Charlotte Sound. Concerns about the wellbeing of Jason Michael Johns, believed to have been at the Waikawa Marina in Picton on Saturday evening, were raised after some of his belongings including his passport were found at the marina by security.

Art deco styled aircraft from around the world take to the skies By Cathie Bell Rare restored aircraft that haven’t been seen in New Zealand skies for decades are to be the drawcard at this year’s Yealands Classic Fighters at Omaka airfield in April. Yealands Classic Fighters chairman Graham Orphan says the event organisers are ‘absolutely stoked’ with the range and variety of glamorous aircraft from the Golden Age that they have been able to bring together. “It will be a totally unique assembly of stylish airborne exotica from an age long gone!” One of the eagerly anticipated and arguably most stylish races scheduled to take place at Yea-

lands Classic Fighters is the ‘Golden Age’ Air Race, Graham says. Amongst the art deco-styled aircraft is a rare and tiny Comper Swift, one of just a handful of flyable survivors worldwide which has just been restored by JEM Aviation at Omaka and will be heading home to Sydney after the airshow. Coming all the way from Sweden will be a de Havilland Puss Moth, a plane type that was seen here prior to WWII however, there have been no NZ based survivors remaining in flyable condition since the 1950s. Other art deco gems expected to appear are an Australian reg-

istered, Beech C-17B ‘Staggerwing’, a stunning polished metal Ryan STM, a Waco ‘Taperwing’ and a recently completed Chilton monoplane with a further possible art deco entrant from the USA. Another fresh restoration is a 1934 Fairchild F-24C8c which was imported as a wreck about eight years ago and meticulously restored by its Omaka-based owner, Trevor Collins. The ‘Golden Age’ of aviation is usually considered to be from the mid-1920s to the late 1930s and many of the aircraft of the era featured streamlining which became part of the art deco styling typical of the day. In many cases, this style treat-

ment went on to influence the motor cars, motor cycles, locomotives and even children’s prams, which embraced the tear-drop shapes of the ‘spats’ or ‘wheel pants’ used to streamline the aircraft of the day. The Yealands Classic Fighters Omaka event is held every second Easter, and the next show is 14-16 April this year. It brings about 30,000 people to Marlborough to attend the airshow. Tickets are available now at www.classicfighters.co.nz The airshow is the main fundraising event for the Omaka Aviation Heritage Museum, located in Blenheim, one of the main tourism attractions in the region.

The first KiwiRail freight train since the November earthquake.

$

Trains resume

999

KiwiRail has resumed freight trains between Blenheim and Lake Grassmere this week, the first since November’s 7.8 magnitude earthquake. The company says the first freight train to leave the Blenheim Freight Hub heading south successfully completed its journey to Lake Grassmere on Monday morning, opening the way for commercial goods to run again on this section of the South Island’s Main North Line. Freight from Dominion Saltworks at Lake Grassmere was then carried on the first stage of its journey to the North Island, arriving in Blenheim just after noon. KiwiRail’s Chief Executive Peter Reidy says today’s journey is a significant milestone in the restoration of the MNL. “Our crews have worked tirelessly throughout the holiday period from both Picton south and Christchurch north to get New Zealand moving again. “This successful run is a real credit to our people who are working to restore rail in the South Island for our customers. “There were more than 50 medium-scale faults along that section of the track and a lot of twisted and broken rail to fix.

There are much bigger issues to tackle further south where the North Canterbury Transport Infrastructure Recovery alliance, which includes NZTA, will join forces to fix the coastal route. “KiwiRail worked quickly after November’s quake to set up coastal shipping services for our customers and additional rail services from our inland hubs to ports at Tauranga and Auckland. “But for many of our freight customers, it is crucial that we get the “just in time” services running again in the South Island as quickly as possible. “There is still considerable danger to our crews due to the ongoing seismic activity but we are using the latest technology, and the considerable skills of our workforce, to complete restoration work as quickly and safely as possible. “This week it is Blenheim to Lake Grassmere that is back working. Each week we hope to have made progress on a little more of the line. “This is an enormous project of work but I am confident that we will complete the task in the fastest time possible,” Peter says.

Progress on massive slip blocking Awatere Valley Road Cut through has been achieved on the massive slip which has blocked the Awatere Valley Road, stranding nine farming families in the upper Awatere since the Kaikoura earthquake. After weeks of aerial bombardment by helicopter-borne monsoon buckets coupled with ground-level blasting to dislodge enormous boulders and manoeuvres with a remote-controlled digger, Marlborough Roads says a way through the slip has been opened up for construction vehicles. Marlborough Roads journey manager Steve Murrin says the area is not yet sufficiently stable to allow public access but as soon as a safe route can be secured, the road will reopen soon. “Our contractors are now well through the clearance work at this slip, to a point where we have allowed some emergency and construction traffic through, though there is still some helicopter work required to make the

area safe. But now that we can get construction vehicles through we can get on with repairing damage further up the road.” The worst of this damage is about 4km beyond the main slip at Maddocks Cutting, where the earthquake has put big cracks in the road. Steve says contractors will attempt to excavate into the road bank to provide a safe platform on which to construct a new 100 metre section of road. The work for the contractors has been dangerous and technically challenging, he says. “We cannot open the road for public use until both the main slip site and Maddocks areas are safe.” However he is optimistic the road going through to Molesworth can be reopened later this month. Marlborough Civil Defence has been flying in supplies to the farms above the slip.

Timber milling mystery in play By Cathie Bell A murder-mystery play set in Havelock’s timber milling days of the 1850s opens for a twoweek season next week. Director Bruce Weston says the Havelock Theatre’s ‘Chain Reaction’ is ‘a nice murdermystery, with lots of murders and hopefully a surprise ending’ and should be entertaining for the audience. The show has a gala opening on Wednesday next week, sponsored by Bladen Wine and the Slip Inn Cafe/Restaurant, with seven evening shows at 8pm on January 26, 27, and 28, and February 2, 3, and 4, and two Sunday Matinees at 4pm on January 29 and February 5, at the Havelock Town Hall. Bruce says ‘Chain Reaction’ has been specially re-written for Havelock Theatre by the English playwright Carol Shepard and is co-directed by Bruce and Gillian Edwards. It is set in Havelock during the timber milling days of the 1850s, Martha and John take in the

mysterious Mr Blackshaw as a lodger, knowing very little about him. However the promise of money persuades them. Townsfolk are murdered. Strange coincidences occur and suspicions fall faster than a timber feller’s axe when all the people who die are connected with the family. Martha and John are grateful for the extra money and so do not question or report their suspicions of Mr Blackshaw. What is the shocking truth behind their lodger and the quiet timber town of Havelock? Bruce says it is great working with the Havelock Theatre group, and the show is ‘good theatre’. Tickets cost: Adults $18, students and seniors $15, children under 14years $10 and can be booked at: Eyes on Nature, 61 Main Road, Havelock, 574 1256; Still Books, 18 Scott Street, Blenheim 578 9701; Take Note, 28 High Street, Picton 573 6107; and Foresters Cafe, Mt Richmond Estate, 7090 SH 6, Rai Valley 571 6070.

Everyone with a current private insurance policy for home and contents that includes fire insurance (most do) automatically has EQC’s insurance. EQC covers earthquake damage to homes (up to $100,000+GST), contents (up to $20,000+GST) and a defined area of residential land.

Gun law reform Dear Ed, On the eve of Obama’s outgoing, we need to be listening to his plea to change his countrys gun laws. The same applies here, but does the Police Commissioner really believe that the people who commit crimes involving firearms are going to hand in their weapons if there is an amnesty. The Police themselves allowed our situation to develop to where it is today when they allowed de-registration of all firearms back in the ‘70s. I purchased my first firearm in 1962. This didn’t require a firearms license, but the weapon had to be registered against my name the same way as motor vehicles today are registered to the owner. Back then, and until deregistration took effect, the Police pretty much knew where every firearm in the country was and if one did turn up illegally then it could be traced back to its registered owner and they could work from there to find how it got to a crime scene. Now, a licensed firearms holder can have any number of weapons in the gun cabinet and unless they are special

category firearms, the Police have no idea what’s in there. Burglarys and illicit trading allow some of these weapons to fall into the hands of criminals, and when they do turn up at a crime scene there is no way of tracing them back to the legal owner which would surely give Police a starting point to work from. 99% of firearms owners are fully aware and compliant users, and so any radical law changes are only going to penalise them one way or another. The people who use firearms for illegal purposes aren’t going to give a toss what the law says about firearms ownership and use, so new, tougher laws won’t even be a consideration for them. The horse has bolted as far as illegal firearms are concerned, and if there are 20,000 of them out there, there is fat chance of getting many of them handed in under an amnesty. I say, start again with registration, then Police will know who owns what and where it should be. Apart from the cost, I can’t see why any responsible user would object! Kenneth J. Blenheim

Letters to the editor Letters on issues of community interest are welcomed. Guidelines are that they should be no longer than 150 words. They must be signed and a street address provided to show good faith, even when a nom de plume is provided for publication.

Club attendance I read of the poor attendance at the club on New Year’s Eve. One reason for this could be due to the fact that club members have to pay car parking fees to attend the club. We are all aware that the council charges the parking fees, not the club, this raises the question, what other club in Blenheim do the members have to pay to visit their club? This extra charge imposed when visiting the club has deterred many from regular visits, I know because I am one. Kiwi. Blenheim

Spring Creek roundabout the public will pay Dear Ed, I noticed work has started on a roundabout at Spring Creek. What possessed Marlborough Road and NZ Transport to come up with this ‘over kill’ and colossal, unnecessary expenditure to the taxpayer. A 50km per hour zone would have addressed any problems at a paltry cost of four notices

warning of a 50km zone and eight 50km zone notices. My guess is what possessed the bureaucrats to go to such an extravagant solution, was justification of jobs and salaries. The bureaucrats are without conscience. The public will pay and pay dearly. Don Coyote Blenheim

World Rally Champion co-driver John Kennard, home briefly in Blenheim.

Rallying around the world Blenheim vineyard owner John Kennard is better known for being World Rally Championship driver Hayden Paddon’s codriver. During a brief break at home, he tells Cathie Bell about rallying around the world.

The French Alps, covered in snow and ice, are a long way from Blenheim’s hot dry roads, but John Kennard is there now, getting ready for the Monte Carlo rally, through the mountains of France, in his twelfth season co-driving for Hayden Paddon as they try to beat their fourth placing in last year’s World Rally Championship competition. Hayden and John will be preparing in what is likely to be icy and snowy roads for the first WRC rally of the year. John says prior to each rally, they drive it twice, and the first time they drive down the road, Hayden describes what he sees, ‘in a methodical way with numbers and in a way that describes to him how fast he can go, things like the angle of a camber, the crest in the middle of it’. “He sets out how he wants to position the car, it may not be normal driving position. “I write all that down in the first drive, in the second one, he makes sure that is what he wants. “At the same time, we video it all so both can sit down and read through it again.” John had about three and a half weeks at home

2 ONLY!

in Marlborough over December and January, enough time to get the vineyard spraying and some other work done before heading off again. Vines and racing cars go hand-in-hand for John – he raced in Europe after meeting business partner Brent Rawstron when they both broke down at the same place during a race and got talking, and Brent also got him involved in the wine industry and suggested he buy a vineyard, which John and Finnish wife Satu Lappalainen did. This has led to their having the Vicarage Lane label of sauvignon blanc and pinot noir, which they sell in Finland. It was working with Brent and wife Shirley overseas in those early rallies in Europe that gave John his first WRC experience, when their co-driver got sick before the Finland WRC rally. “Brent was looking around and said ‘you be co-driver’. “So the first rally I was ever co-driver in was WRC in Finland. It was a bit like your first rugby game being an All Blacks’ test.” The prize money from that race was enough to keep him racing in Europe and his next race

was the WRC Rally Great Britain, so he did two WRC rallies in one year, his first year. “It gave me an interest and opportunity to meet a whole lot of people… I packed up here and moved to Europe and worked in the business.” Satu was working in the events side of the motoring world, and continues to travel with John to some races, and they spend time together in Finland with relatives. In 2002, he moved to the United States to set up a racing team for Mitsubishi. That team achieved the company’s goals in 2003, winning everything, and Mitsubishi wound it up, leaving John to come home to tend vineyards. Then, in 2005, Hayden’s father came to see him and ‘the rest is history’, John says. “I could see right from the beginning, he had the ability. “He’s just gone on and on and on. Every single step, he projected for himself right at the start. “2018 he’s targeted as the year for winning the WRC. We’ll see. Maybe he can do it a year early.”

Expedition changes Tamzin’s life By Celeste Alexander While most people spent their Christmas and New Year holidays relaxing with family and friends, Tamzin Henderson was on a sub-Antarctic islands voyage photographing sea lions, penguins and bird life. Tamzin, who hails from Blenheim but currently lives and works in Nelson as a mortgage advisor, recently returned from a trip through a company called Heritage Expeditions. As a passionate wildlife and nature photographer, Tamzin felt it was time to “spread my wings” and take on a bigger challenge. “A friend of mine won a scholarship offered by the company two years ago and her experience looked absolutely incredible. “I was very lucky to have my family support me both with money for the trip and a new camera lens as it was a significant cost. The expedition began on Christmas Eve and took Tamzin from Bluff, through the Snares ( a small island group), to Enderby Island, Macquarie Island, looked around the Australian base at Buckles Bay then to Campbell Island before returning. Tamzin admits it took her a while to gain her sea legs; “There were a few days at the start where I think I gave the ocean more food than I ate,” she jokes. Asked what was the highlight of the expedition, Tamzin replies; “Every island stop was a highlight as they were all so vastly different.” “We watched sea lions give birth

to their pups on Enderby Island, and saw yellow-eyed penguins negotiate the long walk from the Rata forest to the beach trying to avoid the bored and cheeky sub-adult male sea lions along the way “Landing at Sandy Bay on Macquarie to thousands of King penguins, Royal Penguins and baby elephant seals was mind blowing. “On Campbell Island my experience was also incredible. Standing on the Col Lyall, watching Light-mantled sooty albatross fly in courtship for at least half an hour before nesting together on a cliff face, and spotting the very rare Campbell Island Snipe and having to step off the boardwalk to avoid upsetting a mother Southern Royal Albatross who was nesting right next to the track, were all experiences I won’t forget,” she says. Leaving Campbell Island to head home, Tamzin says it was the perfect end to her ‘dream’ expedition. “The seas were calm and the sun was shining. As we passed the Northern Cliffs we sailed among thousands of Campbell and Greyheaded Albatross. “It was so abundantly clear that we were in their home, in their ocean and we were so privileged to be there. “It makes me teary just thinking about it. It’s hard to explain how a two week holiday can change your life but the Southern Ocean does that to you,” she says. More photos from Tamzin’s expedition can be seen by searching Tamzin.nz.

AGED CARE in Marlborough What is elder abuse? Elder abuse and neglect is a single or repeated act, or lack of appropriate action, occurring within any relationship where there is an expectation of trust, which causes harm or distress to an older person. What can you do to stop elder abuse? Treat older people with respect. Challenge ageist attitudes. Don’t ignore it, get help. Know how to recognise signs of elder abuse and neglect. What does elder abuse look like? Commonly, several types of abuse occur together. The types of abuse include: Psychological Abuse Behaviour causing mental anguish, stress or fear. For example: Ridicule or threats. Harassment or humiliation. Preventing choice or decision-making. Withholding affection.

Great brain stimulating activities for seniors Crossword puzzles These games stimulate problem-solving skills. They help recall memory and stimulate word association. Word based board games, such as scrabble also stimulate this skill. Reading Books, newspapers, and magazines are the best way to encourage your imagination and expand your ability to make decisions. Speaking positive about a book or news article makes you focus on the good, which can lead to better recall and social interactions. Gardening Seniors may be deficient in vitamin D if they spend the vast majority of time indoors.

Gardening is an easy way to get into the sun, our best source of vitamin D. Vitamin D is necessary to balance brain hormones. As a bonus, the act of planning out a garden, cultivating the soil, and growing plants is a calming activity. Exercise Exercise is central to memory reinforcement at all ages. Exercise not only helps the brain, it helps your body. The more you move your body, the more nutrients, blood, and oxygen move through your body. Your physical fitness program is as important as your brain fitness program.

Financial Abuse Illegal or improper use of money, property or other assets. For example: Unauthorised taking of money or possessions. Misuse of power of attorney. Failure to repay loans. Use of home and/or utilities without contributing to costs. Scams that rely on establishing a relationship with the older person with the intention

of exploiting their savings and/or assets, e.g. romance scams. Physical Abuse Infliction of pain, injury or use of force. For example: Hitting, pushing, rough handling. Over-medication. Inappropriate use of restraints or confinement. Neglect Not providing for physical, emotional or social needs. For example: Inadequate food, clothing, shelter Lack of social contact, support Health needs not attended to.

AGED CARE in Marlborough Aged care for your loved one

For a free funeral information pack or to arrange a visit to talk about your farewell wishes, please phone 578 4719.

Deciding to move a family member an aged care facility can be very difficult. As well as trying to work out when is the right time and all the emotional hurdles, you also need to deal with the very practical task of deciding which care facility is right for you. With an increasing number of providers in the market and probably a long checklist of needs you might have this is can be a daunting process, so here is a list of things to keep in mind as you make this important decision. Reputation What are others saying (positive or negative) about the facility? Ask if you can speak with families who have loved ones staying there, so you can get a better idea of the day-to-day experience. Location You’ll want to choose a location which is close enough for family members to visit regularly, but that also allows your loved oneto keep some links with their community. Is it nearby other facilities such as a hospital, shopping centre, church, library, etc., to allow some degree of independence if they are capable? Are there opportunities for the residents to be involved within their local community? Lifestyle activities We know socialisation is important as we get older, especially as our mobility decreases. Are there opportunities for those living there to interact socially with others in the home? What types of activities are organised, and

can people organise their own activities and groups? Are there ways they can join in with other community groups? Do they have access to computers and the internet so they can connect with family and friends through email and social media? Health, wellbeing and support: The facility you choose should provide easy access to doctors, dentists and other health professionals. You may want to check what programs exist to support mental health and promote happiness. It’s also wise ask about what policies and plans are in place for when needs change and they require higher level care, such as with the onset of dementia. Overall impressions Your overall impressions will tell you a lot about the home. Is it clean and tidy and well-kept? Does it have a neutral or pleasant smell? How are noise levels? Do those living there seem relaxed, happy and engaged with each other? Cost A final consideration is the cost of the care facility. What is the fee structure? Are lump-sum payments required and how much are they? How much is required upfront to secure a place? All of these answers will determine whether you will need to sell capital assets prior to moving into the home.

Babies building blocks being offered at Blenheim Playcentre The popular Babies Building Blocks Program held previously at Renwick Playcentre, will be held at Blenheim Playcentre from February 2017. Every Tuesday, the ten week course, for 6-12 month old babies and their parents/caregivers, will allow adults and children to get together each week, sharing ideas, and playing and learning alongside each other. The course will offer a chance to experience what Playcentre is like. “Playcentre is run by families for families. Parents learn from each other in a supportive environment,” course

facilitator Poz Poswillo says. The Babies Building Blocks course is for all parents, whether younger, older, ‘first timers’ or those with older siblings. “People enjoy exploring different types of play with their babies and find it helpful to ask questions. Both babies and adults also make friends along the way,” Poz says. “We always welcome people who want to find out more. At Playcentre children develop the curiosity and courage to try new things, and the motivation to extend themselves.

These skills are some of the essential building blocks that prepare them to succeed in later years.” Babies Building Blocks course runs weekly from Tuesday February 7 until Tuesday April 11. The 10 week course for 6-12 month old babies and their parents/caregivers costs $30 and has limited spaces. Blenheim Playcentre is located next to Whitney Street School, 17 Eltham Road, Blenheim. Registration for this popular program is essential to avoid disappointment. Contact Rebecca Toms blenplaycentre@xtra.co.nz.

If you have overindulged in food and alcohol during the Christmas break, give your body a break by cleansing your liver.

Start 2017 with a healthy liver Mary Tolan(RN).

Christmas for many involves feasting on delicious food and drinking cocktails, beer and wine until we are more than merry. Loading our bodies with excess sugar, alcohol and getting less sleep can howeverimpede on the body’s natural abilities to detoxify. The liver’s function is to regulate most chemical levels in the blood and to excrete a product called bile. Bile helps to break down fats, preparing them for further digestion and absorption. All of the blood leaving the stomach and intestines passes through the liver where it’s processed and broken down, balanced, and nutrients are created for the body to use. Some of the more wellknown functions include the following: • Production of certain proteins for blood plasma • Production of cholesterol and special proteins to help

carry fats through the body • Store and release glucose as needed • Processing of hemoglobin for use of its iron content (the liver stores iron) • Clearing the blood of drugs and other harmful substances • Regulating blood clotting • Resisting infections by producing immune factors and removing bacteria from the bloodstream. So the next time you reach for sugary drinks or alcohol, spare a thought for the hard work being carried out by your liver. Consider taking the load off your liver so your body can naturally detoxify, making you feel rejuvenated and reenergised. Here are some easy detox tips that you can do anywhere, whether you are on holiday, at home or work. Lemon water You might feel like coffee

is the answer first thing in the morning, especially when tired. Instead, have a lemon water. It kick-starts your digestion, cleanses the liver and helps to alkalise your body. Green juice Once you’ve knocked back your lemon water, follow it with a green juice. This provides your body and liver with an abundance of vitamins and minerals necessary for detoxification. Move your body Whether it’s a gentle walk or a high intensity work out, exercise will increase your circulation and help to flush toxins. It might be the last thing you feel like doing, but you will feel so much better after. Go gluten, dairy, sugar and caffeine free If you are feeling particularly tired and bloated after Christmas, try eliminating these foods for five to seven days.

When asthma strikes Healthline, Pharmacists, GP or GP Practice Nurse, and Urgent After Hours GP offer professional health advice. If you arrive at Wairau Hospital’s Emergency Department with a non-urgent health concern you may be referred to your GP.

Would you know what to do if you came across someone having an asthma attack? Asthma attacks occur when the airways in the lungs tighten, partially close up, swell inside and make more mucus. This makes it harder to breathe in and even harder to breathe out. They are very scary for the person experiencing it as it feels like they are breathing through a straw, then that straw closes so the air can’t come in. The Asthma and Respiratory Foundation NZ recommends if you see someone having an asthma attack, the first thing to do is stay calm because the person will be panicking when they can’t breath.

Signs of a severe asthma attack are being distressed, gasping for breath, difficulty speaking two words and blueness around the mouth. If you see someone with these symptoms call an ambulance immediately by dialling 111. Sit them down. If they have their reliever inhaler, give them six puffs of the inhaler for severe and moderate asthma. If a spacer is available, use this together with the inhaler as this will deliver more medication to the lungs. Stay with the person having the attack and give them reassurance.

Cricket update There were wins for Wairau Valley and Celtic when T20 Cricket returned to action last week following the Christmas break. Andrew Courtney (30no) and James Croker (20no) were the heroes for Celtic as they chased down Wairau Cavaliers total of 144 (Geoff Barnett 49) with an over to spare. Valley hung on for a tense four run win over Wairau with Greg Stretch claiming 4-12 from his four overs for Valley. In Second Grade there were wins for Renwick, Wairau Valley and UCVC and those three teams remain tied in first place at the half way stage of the competition. This weekend sees the MCA senior rep team travel to Rangiora to take on a strong Canterbury Country side in their final Hawke Cup outing of the season. Club T20 action continues on Friday and Saturday at both Horton and Oliver Park.

Metal munching racing

By Celeste Alexander Local street stock driver Daniel Honey first started out in speedway by volunteering. He now has a team of street stock cars and is helping others get involved by enlisting them as drivers and pit crew. Daniel created the Holden street stock team ‘Metal Munching Racing’ and has built three cars, one of which he drives himself and two others driven by team members. He says the idea to create the team was to give others a stepping stone into speedway. “It’s about getting people involved, whether it’s racing or pit crewing. It’s a good way to learn about street stocks and speedway in general,” he says. Daniel has three Holdens which he built out of his own pocket and with the help of sponsors. The drivers help with the build as well as paying a set amount as part of their commitment which goes back into the car to keep it race ready. Driving for this season are Daniel (721) and Bruce Foster (521). In the third car is Ricky Smith (621)who has been unable to race this season due to an injury. The pit crew that supports the team on and off the track are DJ, Sam Watson, Shane Mortimer and Norton Sixtus. “When I started I didn’t know anything and now I’m in the position to show others which

is great,” he says. Daniel, a machinery operator for Sheridan Contracting Marlborough Ltd, moved to Blenheim 10 years ago from the North Island town Waiuku. He saw there was speedway on and went along to the Eastern States track to watch. “I knew then I wanted to get involved and that volunteering was the way to go,” he says. Daniel volunteered for three years doing everything from security and operating the tow truck to working on the pit gate. He decided to “bite the bullet” and get a production car and start racing. After one season he entered the street stock class. “Watching the guys racing I just thought... that’s me!” He started in a Ford Falcon. “I won’t talk about that though, I never had any luck in the Falcon,” he laughs. He’s now racing a Holden VN station wagon and went on to build another VN and a VP, all painted in the team’s signature black and orange. Racing has become a family affair now with Daniel’s partner a volunteer on the dummy grid and his children cheering the team along. “My eight-year old son is one I will have to watch out for when he’s older, he’s already planning his race strategy against me,” Daniel

laughs. Sponsoring the team are Sheridan Contracting Marlborough Ltd, Jacks Tyres, Hazbeanz Mobile Espressso, Sign Images, Marlborough Vehicle Removals and SpeedNut Photography. “Not to forget the families of those in the team. They put up with a fair bit in the off season and we are grateful for their support,” Daniel says. Asked what advice he has for anyone wanting to get involved in speedway, Daniel says to “start with volunteering”. “It gives you an insight into the club, the running of it and what’s involved. Use that as a stepping stone into other classes,” he says. The team’s main focus for this year is the South Island Street Stock Title which will be held in Blenheim on February 18, as well as the in house ‘Bragging Rights Title’ for the second year in a row.
