By Cathie Bell Edith Berry is delighted to see her father’s threshing machine play a role at Brayshaw Park on Monday, when Heritage Day will be celebrated. The Vintage Farm Machinery Association is putting the threshing machine into operation, and Edith hopes to come and see it work again, as she remembers it when her father got it in 1924. Vintage machinery back for heritage day Continued from page 1 Heritage Day is being held on Waitangi Day, Monday February 6, with a big range of displays at Brayshaw Park from 10am until 4pm. This year’s theme is ‘heritage skills with unique collections’. The Marlborough Museum staff and the many associations based at Brayshaw Park will be bringing the park alive in new and engaging ways

with skills demonstrations throughout the day relating to all manner of trades. There will be prizes for the ‘Best Dressed Pioneers’, for the following categories: Pioneer King 18+, Pioneer Queen 18+, Pioneer Prince under 18, and Pioneer Princess under 18. Prizes include Warehouse gift vouchers. Among the displays will be John Moran’s threshing machine, and daughter Edith Berry visited the park

this week to see her father’s machine again. She remembers living in Tatchells Road, Ward, as a child, and her father operating a business with the threshing machine, hay press, and a chaff cutter, working from Lake Grassmere down to Wharanui. “He did long days. “I remember when we saw him coming home round the corner, Mum

would say ‘get inside you girls and put the cloth on the table’ so it looked like dinner would be ready soon.” Vintage Farm Machinery spokesman Ross Cooke says the threshing machine was imported from England in 1924. It came to Wellington by steamer, then across to Picton, where it was towed to Ward by a traction engine.

By Cathie Bell A unique part of Marlborough’s industrial history will be on show for Heritage Day, with the standby station in Springlands holding an open day on Sunday. On the corner of Thomsons Ford Road and Old Renwick Road, the stand-by station houses two diesel generators that powered Blenheim and much of Marlborough when power plants in the Waihopai Valley and Branch River were low, and saved money during power shortages in the 1990s. John Bailey, who worked for Marlborough Lines looking after the stand-by station from 1964 until 2010, will fire up the engines as part of the open day display. The Marlborough Power Board was generating electricity for Blenheim and Seddon from a plant in the Waihopai Valley in 1927, but there was public criticism about it not being enough, so in 1929, a Paxman engine was bought and shipped over from Wellington on the Echo which brought it up the Opawa River. It started running in 1930, and it was complemented with a bigger Harland and Wolff engine in 1937. John says the Harland and Wolff engine ‘had lazy horses,

but the Paxman was always a good worker’. The two engines and the Waihopai plant ran until 1948, he says, when the Cobb plant started. “That helped. It wasn’t the complete answer, so we kept running the engines.” In 1955, the National Grid came to Marlborough via the West Coast, and in 1958, the Kikiwa link was put in. Marlborough Lines looked at selling the engines, but that fell through, and the company kept them as a stand-by, and they were last used in September 1992, the year when the southern lakes that power the National Grid ran dry, John says. “It was no problem, they chuffed away.” Marlborough Lines continues to own the engines, and John says he feels strongly they are something that needs to be kept. “It’s an important part of Marlborough’s industrial history, and indeed unique in New Zealand to have them still operating.” • Diesel stand-by engine open day, on Sunday February 5, corner of Thomsons Ford Road and Old Renwick Road, doors open at 1pm, engines will be fired up between 2pm and 2.30pm. All welcome, gold coin donation.

Mark says it was a heart-warming experience being in Kaikoura on Wednesday distributing the packs. Interacting with the Crusaders was pretty special too. It’s great being able to do something practical to help the earthquake affected communities. “This is our way to really help families after the initial wave of generosity in the immediate aftermath of the quake. With Christmas behind them, many families now face an uncertain time ahead and this is a way we can help financially. This is the Harcourts Foundation and Harcourts New Zealand way of standing behind the children and their families in the worst hit areas of the East Coast. It will benefit a total of eight schools, their children and families in this region.” As well as the $50,000 pledge from the Harcourts Foundation, money is also being donated by Harcourts’ 190 offices around the country with Harcourts Marlborough’s Mark Davis and team hand out stationery $62, 601 raised so far. with the Crusaders.

Slow for school buses With school back this week, Rural Women New Zealand reminds drivers to remember the 20km/h speed limit when passing a stopped school bus. National president Fiona Gower says it is very important in all communities, particularly in rural areas, that drivers are aware of the rule and safe speed limit of 20km/h passing a stopped school bus. RWNZ also advocates teaching children road safety when they are getting on and off the bus, at the gate or at the designated point on the road.

By Cathie Bell Each child at the Awatere Early Learning Centre in Seddon has been given a copy of the “Quakey Cat” picture book by Blenheim company Geoffrey T Sowman as part of an effort to help children understand earthquakes in the aftermath of large shakes in November. Sowmans staff Barry Holmwood, Alistair Sowman, and Jenny Andrews visited the early childhood centre on Monday to give the children the books, which were eagerly received by the children who started reading them immediately. Barry says the company tries to be active in the community, and the book donation seemed a good thing to do for the children. He told them all to take the books home and get mum and dad to read them to them – ‘after you’ve had tea and done the dishes!’

Each of the students who attend school in Seddon and Ward, as well as Kaikoura’s six schools, have had their back-to-school costs paid for by the Harcourts Foundation. Stationery packs will be delivered to each student and any remaining money will go to the local schools for spending on essentials for this school year. A local crew including Harcourts Marlborough’s owner Mark Davis got out and about this week to deliver some special stationery packs to the kids of Kaikoura ahead of the school year, with help from Crusaders rugby players who were also in town. The packs, funded by the Harcourts Foundation and kindly prepared by Paper Plus Kaikoura and Blenheim, will help the students and families affected by November’s quake cope with the cost of going back to school. The Harcourts Foundation has pledged $50,000 to help the students and their families cope with the costs associated with the new school year. “We loved being able to deliver the packs to Kaikoura last Wednesday and can’t wait to spread the magic a

Card games to start socially

Fresh Tegel NZ Skin On Chicken Breast Fillets

By Cathie Bell Blenheim woman Joan Macown is to hold weekly card games afternoons at the Crossroads drop-in centre, starting today. The long-time card game fan is a volunteer at Crossroads each Wednesday, coming in that afternoon to help prepare the evening meal, serve it, and clean up afterwards. She has decided to start a games session, mainly card games such as euchre, crib, and 500, in the gap that happens from 2.30pm to 4pm – “there is a gap between the vegetable preparation and the meal” – to provide some social time for people waiting. Card playing is a family thing for her, and Joan says she’s been playing 500 and euchre since she was eight years old. “I play quite a lot, I love it. It’s just a recreational thing, a way to connect with people and friends.” Joan’s favourite game is 500, and she says she is happy to teach anyone to play the game during the Wednesday sessions. “All are welcome, anyone can come, play cards, and stay for a meal. Bush pilots’ champs to test flying skills By Cathie Bell It will be all go at the Omaka airfield on Saturday during the fifth annual Healthy Bastards Bush Pilot Champs. The champs are the national competition for pilots to test both their short takeoff and landing skills, as well as their precision landing skills. In the first contest, they try to use the shortest possible amount of runway to takeoff and

land, and in the second, pilots try to land as close to a point as they can. Marlborough Aero Club is the host, and flying instructor Sharn Davies, pictured with a Piper plane that will be used in the competition, says 45 entries have been received, which is about average, he says. “It’s quite a specialised event. This is the only national event of this type in the country.”

New principal Patrick Dowling at St Mary’s School, Blenheim, in front of where some classrooms have been demolished.

New principal feels at home By Cathie Bell Becoming principal of Blenheim’s only Catholic primary school is like ‘coming home’, new principal Patrick Dowling says. He was welcomed by pupils to the school at assembly on Monday, and says that even in the first week, he has ‘a sense of belonging’ and is pleased to be back at a Catholic school. Patrick takes over from Alistair Bridgman, who moved to Auckland to head St Joseph’s in Takapuna after 15 years at St Mary’s, and was deputy principal at Bohally Intermediate School in Springlands. While he enjoyed that, being at a Catholic

school had an extra dimension, which he likes. He is Catholic himself, raised in Hawkes Bay in Catholic schools. “It’s all about community.” St Mary’s is changing, with the school reorganising its buildings with three classrooms demolished after engineers declared them unsafe after last November’s 7.8 earthquake. The space the classrooms in has been cleared and will become an outdoor assembly space with trees and other plantings, Patrick says. “It will be an asset for the school. All the students will be able to use it, so that’s neat.”

Norm Fowke Glass High Gas Prices Dear Ed, After a visit to the North Island over Christmas, I am perplexed by the variance in petrol prices. In the Horowhenua, e.g. Levin, prices were 20-25 cents cheaper than Marlborough. Why? After all Levin is inland. The trend continued going north, e.g. Bulls, Taihape, etc. So why is Marlborough much dearer for petrol? Obviously North Island having Gull Stations with cheaper prices forces major petrol stations to drop. The South Island has no Gull stations. Does the free market and competition really work or does it encourage collaboration between service stations to ratchet prices up? Profit and greed is it? The car driving consumer may be paying dearly in Marlborough. Driver Dan Blenheim

Cat food thanks Dear Ed, Thank you so much for the parcel of cat goodies from King Salmon that arrived today for Annie. I had quite forgotten I’d entered the competition (blame it on the brain stem stroke!) and I hadn’t seen anything about winng either (ditto) so Annie and I were both completely surprised. Annie is in the dogbox today, metaphorically speaking, for getting herself locked in my next door neighbour’s garage last night. I don’t think she will do it again! So thank you again and I attach a photo of Annie taken today..checking to see if the coast is clear so she can have a go at those Salmon cat treats! Leigh Maddison Blenheim

Dear Ed, In the minds of TV One and TV 3 during the second half of December and well into January, there was nothing happening in the news, well at least worth reporting in a morning bulletin. Dear Ed, The Sun ‘in brief’ side column raised a thought in regard to the minimum wage rise of .50 an hour from 1/4/17 and Work place Relations and Safety Minister Michael Woodhouse waxing lyrical about such an under-achievement. He further has the gall to state that 119,500 of NZ’s workers are going to benefit from this largesse. Minister Woodhouse has very little to trumpet about here literally.

Union 1st representatives have been saying for at least 18mths/2yrs that the minimum wage needs to be $19.50 - 75 an hour for a family of two adults and two children to eat, rent and live satisfactorily. If Minister Woodhouse is so good with facts and figures perhaps he could express this figure as a percentage of total workers on PAYE taxation. This might just take an unrealistic ‘gloss’ off his trumpeting of ‘Hark the Herald Angels Come’. Geoff Robinson

The New Zealand King Salmon farm at Ruakaka in Queen Charlotte Sound could be one of the farms to move as part of a Government proposal.

Minister’s call on salmon farming National’s Minister for Primary Industries Nathan Guy is sidelining the concerns of the Marlborough community by preparing to decide unilaterally on new salmon farms in the Marlborough Sounds, the Green Party says. Nathan announced last week a two-month consultation period for people to say what they think about moving six salmon farms to different places in the Marlborough Sounds where they will be more productive and cause less environmental damage. Green Party environment spokesperson Eugenie Sage says the Minister has chosen to use special regulation making powers under the Resource Management Act to hand pick a special panel to consider King Salmon’s proposal for six new salmon farms in Pelorus Sound and Tory Channel. The Minister will then make the final decision and the community will have no chance to appeal his decision to the Environment Court. “Nathan Guy is lining things up to make an arrogant, I-know-best decision about where to put these new salmon farms instead of the Marlborough District Council going through the normal RMA processes. “Three out of six new sites identified

by the Minister and the Ministry of Primary Industries are in locations that the Marlborough Council and community have said should be off-limits for marine farms because they’re in uniquely beautiful spots, important habitats and recreational areas. “If the Minister approves these locations for salmon farming, he’ll be deliberately overriding the communities’ well negotiated decision on where salmon farming should take place in the Sounds. “Salmon farming in the Sounds will not be sustainable if it does not have the support and buy-in of the people in Marlborough. “There is an obvious alternative option, and that is for King Salmon to simply reduce the number of fish and amount of feed that it uses on existing sites. “The only reason this isn’t the major option being considered by the Minister is because it will cut into King Salmon’s profits. “It’s 100 percent possible to develop a high-employing aquaculture industry in the Sounds, which also preserves the beauty and health of the environment that is so important to the area.”

Safe users, safe vehicles A Blenheim motorcycle riding instructor is running courses to arm motorcyclists with some tools to help keep them safe on the roads. John Laing, of Marlborough Motorcycle Riding School, has been riding motorbikes for more than 40 years, and instructing for nearly seven. “I just wanted to see people riding a bit better, and safer. After years of riding myself and learning the hard way, I thought I would help others,” he says. John’s school is NZTA approved and certified, meaning he is approved to train and test for Basic Handling certificates for learner licences, and competency-based training and assessment (CBTA) for the restricted and full motorcycle licences. He also offers a range of other courses which are not compulsory, but are encouraged, with some subsidised by ACC, reducing

the cost considerably. Doing extra training courses could help avoid unnecessary crashes on our roads, John says. “If things go wrong riding a motorcycle, it can hurt people quite seriously; what might end up with a small dint on a car can be quite serious if you’re on a motorcycle,” he says. “These courses are to help riders to be safer when they are out on the road.” Training for the learners licence with help of the basic motorcycle handling skills certificate was particularly valuable, giving riders a chance for feedback. “[When you’re learning] In a car, you have an experienced driver sitting beside you, on a motorcycle you don’t have that,” John says. John’s students come from a range of backgrounds and age groups, and each has their own reason for completing his courses.

“The p Breast cancer signs Breast cancer is New Zealand’s third most common cancer and accounts for more than 600 deaths every year. While the risk of being diagnosed with breast cancer increases with age, it can still occur in women under the age of 50. Check yourself regularly for abnormalities in your breasts and if you have any concerns contact your GP. The five steps of a breast self-exam, Step 1: Begin by looking at your breasts in the mirror with your shoulders straight and your arms on your hips. Here’s what you should look for: Breasts that are their usual size, shape, and colour. Breasts that are evenly shaped without visible distortion or swelling. If you see any of the following changes, bring them to your doctor’s attention:

Dimpling, puckering, or bulging of the skin. A nipple that has changed position or an inverted nipple (pushed inward instead of sticking out). Redness, soreness, rash, or swelling. Step 2: Now, raise your arms and look for the same changes. Step 3: While you’re at the mirror, look for any signs of fluid coming out of one or both nipples (this could be a watery, milky, or yellow fluid or blood). Step 4: Next, feel your breasts while lying down, using your right hand to feel your left breast and then your left hand to feel your right breast. Use a firm, smooth touch with the first few finger pads of your hand, keeping the fingers flat and together. Use a circular motion, about the size of a quarter. Cover the entire breast from top

to bottom, side to side — from your collarbone to the top of your abdomen, and from your armpit to your cleavage. Follow a pattern to be sure that you cover the whole breast. Be sure to feel all the tissue from the front to the back of your breasts: for the skin and tissue just beneath, use light pressure; use medium pressure for tissue in the middle of your breasts; use firm pressure for the deep tissue in the back. When you’ve reached the deep tissue, you should be able to feel down to your ribcage. Step 5: Finally, feel your breasts while you are standing or sitting. Many women find that the easiest way to feel their breasts is when their skin is wet and slippery, so they like to do this step in the shower. Cover your entire breast, using the same hand movements described in step 4.

Many cancers can be cured if they’re found and treated in time. It is estimated that in New Zealand, about one person in every three who gets cancer is cured. Even if the cancer cannot be cured, more effective treatment means many people are now living longer.

Have regular checkups with your doctor and talk about any concern you might have about your prostate.

Early detection of prostate cancer Regular prostate PSA tests are important for men who are over the age of 40 if there is a family history of prostate cancer, are older than 50, but younger than 70. Men having any problems such as pain, fever, swelling of the prostate, and blood and pus in the urine or problems passing urine should consult their doctor without delay. The most insidious thing about prostate cancer, and what makes it so dangerous, is that in its early stages it does not usually exhibit symptoms.

This is why regular check-ups are so important. Five Steps to Prostate Cancer Prevention: Test Annually: Men should undergo annual prostate specific antigen (PSA) blood tests and digital rectal exams (DRE) starting at age 45 or earlier. High-risk groups should begin testing at age 40. Listen to your body: A change in the frequency, urgency and pressure during urination, painful urination or the presence of blood

in urine are all warning signs. Regulate diet and alcohol Intake: Eat healthy, balanced meals rich in fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Consume no more than two drinks per day as studies show regualr heavy drinking increases risk. Maintain a healthy weight: Obesity may effect hormone levels related to prostate cancer risk. Exercise regularly: At least 30 minutes of aerobic exercise three to seven times per week. For more information visit your GP.

keeping those ‘nasties’ away from your home...

Pests numbers explode By Celeste Alexander Bugs and creepy crawlies have been the focus of many peoples’ frustrations over the summer months as the warm weather, rain and moisture has created a haven for many unwelcome insects in and around homes. JAE Marlborough owner Ashley Gladman has been out and about in the region battling an explosion in pest populations, particularly the ‘big four’ as he describes it. “The big four... ants, cockroaches, flies and spiders have been the biggest reason for us being called out. “People don’t realise how bad ants are or how far cockroaches have made it into Blenheim areas. Once they were predominantly around the Wither Hills areas, now they are everywhere,” he says. A lot of people have report-

ed finding the little brown Argentine ants in and around their homes. “They are the ones that have a pungent smell when you squash them. You might not realise you have them until you see them inside your home, when in fact they will already be in your garden,” Ashley says. Ants are also being found in unusual places prompting calls. “I had a guy phone who had ants in his work ute. Ants are looking for constant warmth which is what they like so they are always looking for nest sites.” Another major pest this summer has been paper wasps, Ashley says. “These are the little ones that build nests that start the size of a golf ball. When we are called out we usually find several nests in the one area.

“Paper wasps are pretty docile but have a nasty bite,” he says. While calling in a professional pest company to deal with ants, cockroaches, Paper wasps have been a major reason for spiders and wasps, Ashley call outs for pest control companies this also encourages people to summer. start treatments themselves. “The more people who start treating their homes themselves, the better chance we will have at holding the populations back. Marlborough District Councillor Michael Fitzpatrick helps Transport Minister Simon Bridges cut the ribbon on the Grovetown to Spring Creek cycleway, with cyclist Mana Williams.

Marlborough District Councillor Michael Fitzpatrick helps Transport Minister Simon Bridges turn the sod on the extension of the Taylor River Reserve cycleway.

By Cathie Bell Transport Minister Simon Bridges opened a new cycleway in Blenheim and marked the start of another on Friday, extending the existing walking and cycling network in the region. The $1 million Spring Creek Shared Path is complete and construction will now begin on the Taylor River Cycleway, at a cost of $400,000. Marlborough District Council track counters indicate weekly user numbers at over 700 already, with two thirds of users cyclists and this is before many people are aware the path is completed. Simon says the cycleway projects are

Blenheim to Grovetown, which meant residents and students at the Spring Creek and Grovetown schools had to walk or ride along State Highway 1 to get to town. “The bulk of construction was completed late last year, and already the number of people travelling by bike between Spring Creek and Blenheim’s central business district has increased dramatically,” Simon says. “Now that the path is officially open, I’m sure that even more people will take advantage of this safer, high quality route to move between Blenheim’s communities, especially with the new school year about to begin.”

Cycle ways the paths of future ‘exciting’. “These new cycleways will make walking and cycling safer, more enjoyable transport choices for residents and students, as they will be separated from the high-speed traffic along State Highway 1,” he says. “Making urban cycling a safer and more attractive transport choice is a priority. Through our Urban Cycleways Programme we’re accelerating key projects and helping to establish cycling as an integral part of Marlborough’s transport network.” Before the opening of the Spring Creek Shared Path, the track only went from

The Taylor River Cycleway will also help to link residential areas to the CBD, extending the existing popular cycleway along the Taylor River further south and providing a safe commuting option to get more than 1700 students to school. The projects were jointly funded by the Marlborough District Council and the Government through the Urban Cycleways Programme. “Central and local government are working together through this programme to deliver $333 million of new cycleway projects nationwide by June 2018 - the single biggest investment in cycling in New Zealand’s history.”

Festive morning tea a warm-up for festival By Cathie Bell About 50 people gathered to celebrate Chinese New Year and welcome the Year of the Rooster in a multicultural gathering last week. The Marlborough Migrant Centre hosted a Chinese New Year’s Eve morning tea on Friday with dancing and shared food at the St Andrew’s Church Hall in Blenheim. Migrant Centre manager Margaret Western says it is important to celebrate the holiday so Marlborough’s Chinese residents can keep their cultural values and traditions alive. “Even with people who have come to Marlborough for a new life here, it’s still re-

ally important to keep their cultural identity, that their children grow up knowing their culture, and the wider community has an opportunity to celebrate the festivals like Chinese New Year.” People of many cultures attended the morning tea, in a warm-up for next month’s Marlborough Multicultural Festival at Pollard Park on March 4. Margaret says the festival is Marlborough’s acknowledgement of Race Unity Day. “It’s a celebration of ethnic diversity of people who call Marlborough home.” Performers and information stallholders interested in the festival should contact Margaret at the Marlborough Migrant Centre.

Celebrating Chinese New Year are, from left, Ashley Fung, Maria Valencia, Yoshua Judanto, Muhamad Fahlevi, Muhamad Ashley, Jasvir Kaur, holding Gurleen Toora, Andara Farihin, and Euis Nuraemi Maffey.

Tips for restricted teen drivers The restricted licence phase is about building on the experience and skills from the learner licence phase. There are some simple things you can do to help your teen achieve this. • Regularly check up on how their driving is going. Keep an eye on their speed, acceleration and road position. • Help them practise anticipating and responding to hazards. Focus on hazards that may be hidden, for example, when large vehicles obscure other vehicles or pedestrians that may appear without warning. • Show them how to read changeable road conditions (rain, poor light, different road surfaces).

• Give them supervised driving practise at night and while carrying passengers. • Help them know what to do when unexpected events occur on the road. • Talk to them about the risks of driving when tired, sick, distracted or emotional. • Help them develop strategies to avoid pressure to drive and manage distractions like loud music, gadgets and food. • Help them plan their route if they’re driving to a place for the first time, and encourage them to take breaks. • Consider setting some ground rules around driving that you all agree to stick to – this could include picking them up if they don’t feel safe to drive for any reason.

There are things parents can do to support their teenage children on restricted licenses.

Wellington-based artist Sheyne Tuffery.

Artist to bring woodcut printmaking to town By Celeste Alexander Print making is great tool for artists to bring out their individuality and see their designs come to life, Sheyne Tuffery says. Sheyne is a Wellington-based multi-media visual artist who is well known locally for the murals he created on the building tenanted by Noel Leeming and the Health Hub on Charles Street. He will be returning to Blenheim for a workshop he is holding as part of the Marlborough Art Society’s ‘Spring-Summer Series’ of classes and workshops. His workshop is titled ‘Sheyne Tuffery’s Woodcut Printmaking’ and will be held the weekend of March 18-19 at $200 per person. What is unique about this workshop is the handson approach to creating prints by using woodblocks, carved by the individual. “It’s quite a joy watching students who have not done it before. “Like anything each student starts small then expands on their prints quickly once their confidence grows. “Instincts take over and the person’s individuality comes out... it’s really enjoyable from my point of

view,” he says. How it works, Sheyne says, he takes away the thinking by not giving a subject matter to start with. Each person is given a little block which they carve patterns on to. They learn to print those patterns a few different ways while learning the process of printing, using the press, learning to use the inks, before going back to the start to create new and more complicated woodblock designs. “On the second day I encourage the students to bring their own ideas and they start with a silhouette block of a shape of anything. “That will print over the pattern blocks they already made then the whole design comes together. “It’s a really fun and sociable workshop where students are encouraged to talk while they are working. “I’m really looking forward to it and am hoping for a good crowd,” he says. The Marlborough Mayoral Earthquake Fund has been re-opened for new applications from people facing hardship issues due to the Kaikoura earthquake. Marlborough Recovery Manager Dean Heiford says when the fund was established, 34 families and individuals requested immediate help and the fund committee had distributed $12,000 in emergency grants before Christmas. “Those grants helped ease the extra pressure that comes on at Christmas time but there’s still $85,000 left in the fund and we’re now in a position to accept new applications from people finding themselves in a hardship situation.” The one-off grants of up to $500 are available now, however the council’s funding allocations committee has discretion to allocate larger grants if required. Grant applications will be assessed within a fortnight of being received. Application forms and information about criteria can be found on the council’s website, with hard copies at Seddon Information office and Ward Hall. The fund will now stay open and applications will be accepted and assessed on an on-going basis, Dean says.

Spybase workshops popular By Cathie Bell A ‘low key’ protest at the Waihopai Valley spybase last Saturday was followed up with several well-attended workshops, Anti-Bases Campaign organiser Murray Horton says. The group’s annual protest at the spybase called for the base’s closure, Murray says, but the focus of the day was on a series of workshops held at the Nativity Centre in Blenheim. The centre was booked expecting only a small room to be used, but about 80 people came, moving the workshops into the bigger hall, he says. Most people came from the North Is-

land, but one had come from Australia for it and brought several pages of messages of solidarity, Murray says. “What happens at Waihopai and the base itself and the protests movement gives it a bigger international focus. It might seem small and far away at times, but it is noted around the world, and that gives it a bit of perspective.” The election of American president Donald Trump is causing many to re-think New Zealand’s involvement in international intelligence sharing, even if they didn’t share the group’s views, Murray says. “We’ll keep on keeping on.”

Paddy North returns home victorious By Celeste Alexander Local saloon car driver Paddy North has returned to Blenheim victorious after competing at the Valvoline New Zealand Saloon Car Championship at the weekend, and now proudly holds the title of being 2NZ. It’s been a disastrous few weeks for Paddy who managed to wreck his race car, an engine, and a trailer but everything fell into place at the champs, held in Auckland. However it wasn’t an easy second place win, there were many bumps along the way Paddy says. “Basically it all turned to custard from the get go. We broke down on the Desert road with a broken wheel hub and spent six hours stuck there waiting for help. We got this sorted thanks to the help from the speedway community. “Onward to Saturday night the car really lacked in pace all night. I managed to qualify

fourth in my group by one point which put us through to the main event on Sunday. “Early Sunday morning a service was done on the engine and two or three fairly serious issues were found. “We fixed what we could and spent all afternoon praying it would hold the night out, and in doing so we found a few more horsepower and the car really hooked up,” he says. In heat one Paddy started in 11th position but managed to move through the field into fourth. This proved to be a valuable points haul for Paddy and his team. In heat two Paddy started in 10th and moved to ninth after initially dropping a couple of spots. These were soon gained back plus a couple of extra. This set Paddy up for second place on points as he headed into the feature race. “Turn one the car was pretty tight and I dropped back to fourth. I had to really work

for it. “I got into third place but then got caught up in lap traffic so had to pass three cars to get into second,” he says. A few cautions later Paddy was pushing hard for the lead and with one lap to go, he got right up the inside of the 272 car of Chris Cowling, made the move but it was Chris who ‘had the goods to take the chequered flag’, he says. “We got home in second but believe just one more lap would’ve been the deal breaker and we had the pace to take first. “I feel a great sense of achievement and am very proud of the 46e team and everyone who has had a hand in helping us achieve our goals. Paddy crossed the line in second place and is thrilled to once again have the 2NZ title. He will now compete on his home track of Eastern States Speedway this Friday and Saturday for the ‘Mag & Turbo and Radiator Services Saloon Showdown’.

You could win a set of tyres In conjunction with the ‘Mag & Turbo and Radiator Services Saloon Showdown’ on February 3 and 4, there will be set of four brand new Achilles passenger or 4WD tyres up for grabs in a banner competition for one lucky family or spectator. All you have to do is make a banner supporting your favourite local driver, take it along to the race meeting and it will go in for judging. All banners will be displayed at the track. Get a group of friends, family members, staff or even a local organisation together to make a banner and you could win a brand new set of tyres. It’s that easy!

Zorb sports being launched in Blenheim By Celeste Alexander Local lad Landon Neal is launching a new sporting business this Saturday that will see people playing games inside of a zorb ball. Zorb Sports NZ - Blenheim is the first to open and launches this Saturday at College Park and is a new venture for Landon who

thought it would be of ‘interest’ for locals. “I saw it online and thought that it would be something new and fun for Blenheim. “Basically people get inside the zorb balls and play football, bull rush, last man standing and other games... it’s up to them what they choose to play,” he says. Landon and business partner James

McLeod have purchased 10 zorb balls that are suitable for ages 10 and over, and they plan to purchase smaller balls for younger participants. Zorb Sports NZ - Blenheim will be operating on weekends from 10am - 5pm and on weekdays from 4pm. For now, bookings are being taken online.
