Locals dominate A stellar win for local drivers

By Celeste Alexander The ground beneath the Eastern States Speedway track rumbled to the tune of a saloon showdown last Friday and Saturday as local drivers took on a number of visiting cars that travelled for the inaugural event. The Mag & Turbo and Radiator Services Saloon Showdown attracted several out of town cars who came ready to fight it out for $5000 in prize money, but ultimately it was local drivers who managed to dominate the podium. Paddy North, fresh from the New Zealand saloon car championship battled his way to first place while Robert Flood came in at a close second. Drivers ‘rapt’ with hometrack win Continued from page 1 It was a spectacular comeback for Robert who has not raced his saloon for the past two years and a close finish between he and Paddy. Third place went to Christchurch driver (54c) Ryan Marsden and in fourth, another local Paul Cambie. Paddy who now carries the race number 2NZ after his title win last weekend, was ‘rapt’ to be able to bring another win to his home track. “It was great to be able to produce another good result in the first meeting after the NZ title and I was certainly very happy to take the chequered flag. “The track preparation was good, there was great two lane racing... it was all I could ask for,” he says. Paddy battled through a couple of minor carburetor issues on Friday night but continued to accumulate points across all the heats to secure a first place grid position for the final feature race. From there it was simply a dash for the finish. This was a really positive result for the ESS club and the drivers who travelled to Blenheim, sponsors Darrell Bate and Tony Flood say.

“The event went really well and we will look at repeating it next year... hopefully with some bigger car numbers. “The guys that came from out of town were blown away by how good our track conditions were and have gone back to promote the event to other drivers,” Darrell says. Tony, who spoke to several visiting drivers, says the feedback was positive. “On the whole I was really pleased with how the event went and the feedback I received was very very good... I would love to see it back again next year,” he says. The event even attracted John Lovelady, the renowned designer and manufacturer of the Lovelady chassis raced by all of the top four winners. John spent the two nights helping out the drivers in the pit area. Following on from the wins, Paddy plans to have a quiet weekend before getting back into his sprint car to compete at the War of the Wings in Christchurch and Dunedin, then back home to prepare for the North vs South Saloon Challenge set for March. Robert, after having some time away from his saloon car, plans to get some more ‘seat time’ and is looking forward to being part of the saloon challenge team.

Heritage Day successful at Brayshaw Park By Cathie Bell Modellers from as far away as Dunedin and Christchurch, as well as Nelson, were at the official opening of the miniature railway track at Brayshaw Park last weekend. The miniature railway was available both on Sunday for the official ceremony and again on Monday for Heritage Day celebrations. Marlborough Associated Modellers’ Society president Philip Gibbison and club patron mayor John Leggett cut the ribbon to open the club’s new track, which doubles the length of the circuit and takes trains alongside New Renwick Road and past the en-

trance to Brayshaw Park. Philip thanked all the club’s membership and supporters for their efforts in building the track, which has all been voluntary. John says the new track and the club are assets to the community. The land allocated to the club originally was waste land and now, thanks to members’ hard work, is a tribute to them, he says, Marlborough Museum director Steve Austin says Heritage Day was ‘fantastic’. A steady stream of people throughout the day came to Brayshaw Park for the activities, and it was ‘very successful’, he says. “All the groups had a great day.”

Mayor John Leggett (fourth from left) and others ride after the official opening of the new track.

Easter Sunday shops Councillors will decide tomorrow whether to allow shops to open on Easter Sunday. A hearing panel has recommended that tomorrow morning’s planning finance and community committee meeting adopt a policy to let shops open, as workers will have the right to decline to work.

Car crash The Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter responded to a motor vehicle accident on SH 6 between Nelson and Rai Valley. A sole occupant driver collided with the back of a truck, which is believed to have slowed or stopped due to early morning sun strike. The male was removed from his vehicle by fire rescue crew, prior to being treated by St John Ambulance crew. The driver was then flown to Nelson Hospital Emergency Dept with multi trauma injuries for further assessment.

Quake buildings The Marlborough District Council is waiting for the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment to finalise what councils need to provide about buildings with unreinforced concrete facades potentially at risk of falling during earthquakes, district secretary Tony Quirk says. The council believes the number of buildings affected in Blenheim is low, ‘probably between 4 and 6 in total’.

The proposed east coast cycleway through Marlborough to Kaikoura has many fans, including back row from left, Dave Olliver, Margaret Cooney, John Forrest, John Leggett, Rick Edmonds, Brigid Forrest, John Leader, and Basil Stanton, and front row from left, Tony de Reeper, Stephen Gullery, Rob Burn, Kevin Wilson, Cynthia Stockey, and Stuart Smith.

Build it now, advocates say By Cathie Bell The rebuilding of State Highway One from Picton to Kaikoura is an opportunity to build a cycleway along the coastal route and attract tourism, advocates say. Kaikoura MP Stuart Smith hosted a meeting last Friday of Marlborough people keen to see the route built. Many at the meeting have been working on sections of track in different parts of Marlborough, and say that in principle, they support a project to link them all and to extend cycling all the way to Kaikoura.

Forrest Wines owner John Forrest says it is time for central Government to step in with funding so the project can get underway, and it should be done while planning to re-build the road and rail links is underway. “We have to tell central government we have the capacity and the commitment.” Bike Walk Marlborough Trust chairman Kevin Wilson says the trust has a small working group investigating a cycleway south, and has identified most of the way to Ward. Stuart says it is really important Marlborough as a community is ‘shamelessly public’ about

what it wants to happen. “Governments want to give people what they want.” Marlborough mayor John Leggett says many people in different groups across the region are ‘putting heart and soul’ into creating something for the betterment of everyone. “As a council, we are right behind these sorts of projects.” He describes the opportunity to add a cycleway to the road and rail re-build as a “lifetime opportunity’.

The Government is to give the Marlborough Civil Defence Emergency Management Group $23,000 to develop the Marlborough Lifelines Regional Fuel Plan, which will look at how to keep the region in fuel despite natural disasters. Civil Defence Minister Gerry Brownlee says the grants are awarded from the 2017 Resilience Fund, an annual fund of $889,000 administered by the Ministry of Civil Defence & Emergency Management.

Australia without visiting New Zealand’. So they did and Maureen says, ‘it’s the very best thing we’ve ever done’. Their time here coincided with Waitangi Day and Chris took them to Monday’s celebrations at Waikawa marae. “We feel very privileged to be here,” Maureen says, adding that they had never experienced anything like the ceremonial welcome they became part of. She said she couldn’t properly describe the overwhelming feeling during the celebration of the day in the wharenui, the meeting house. “I felt almost tearful. It was just wonderful.” The day began at the gates, with a welcome and formal call on to the marae. Then there was a hongi of welcome to each visitor from the Te Atiawa representatives who created a corridor along the wharenui. The large crowd which attended was addressed in Maori and Joe Puketapu also spoke in English, explaining the significance of the day to this country and to Te Atiawa, and the journey and fights that had bought them to this place from Taranaki. The women of the marae’s kapa haka group, wearing their flax cloaks, sang a karakia and Nan Chadwick’s voice rang through the building to help set the atmosphere. In accordance with custom, after the halfhour long event food was served to the well over two hundred people who attended. The day’s festivities went on until 2.30pm and there were musical performances as families picnicked in the grounds.

By Cathie Bell The Marlborough District Council has yet to decide whether it will make a submission on the Government’s proposal to shift six salmon farms in the Sounds, mayor John Leggett says. Primary Industries Minister Nathan Guy started a two month-long public consultation last week to see what people think about moving six salmon farms to different sites, one in Tory Channel and five in the outer Pelorus Sound. The new sites are high-flow sites, which will be better for productivity and for the environment. John says councillors have yet to be briefed properly on the proposal and to consider it, so no decision has been made yet on whether to make a submission. “As far as making a submission on the proposal, we haven’t got that far yet.” The council submitted against the original farm expansion proposal to the Environment Protection Agency in 2010, when NZ King Salmon applied for nine new farms. He says the council is happy with the way the Ministry for Primary Industries is handling the consultation process, and

Salmon correction NZ King Salmon is looking to set up a primary processing plant in Picton in March next year, not this year as was reported in the Blenheim Sun last Friday. NZ King Salmon chief executive Grant Rosewarne says the company’s plan is to set up the processing plant and 30 new jobs in the company’s existing building in March 2018. Longterm, it would like to have a site on the north shore of the port land.

The ‘Dance with Me in the Heart’ classes are based on the approach of Dr. Emmi Pikler and are supported by the latest brain research. This approach focuses on building strong and peaceful parent infant partnerships, encouraging respectful relationships and supporting your child’s natural wisdom, intelligences and natural unassisted movement.

Facilitators Dagmar van Antwerpen and Lynn DeBoo say the Parent-Infant classes are ideal for babies aged between six weeks to six months. There will also be a toddler class later in the year. “The relationship you have with your baby is the most important thing in the world to them, and we want to help nourish this and provide you with skills to make a working partnership with your baby,”

she says. These 10 weekly classes are usually held outside in a garden and run for approximately two hours. During the session there is some ‘quiet time’ where parents silently observe the children which encourages them to ‘talk’, she says. For more information on the classes contact Dagmar 0226341072.

Study tips Find out where, when and how you learn best: By taking notes? Reading one book at a time? Through all-out effort? Study groups? Take breaks, also from the Internet. Accept that things don’t always happen according to the plan. Check what you have learned regularly to keep calm. Think ahead, make weekly schedules. Look forward to what lies ahead! Talk positively to yourself, not negatively. Don’t push yourself to read when you don’t feel like it, try to find the reason why you don’t feel like it and work with that.

Be smart and safe Marlborough students began their march back to school last week, and ensuring they keep safe is Safekids Aotearoa, which has valuable safety tips. For children They’re safer in a booster seat till they’re 148cm tall. Primary school children seated in booster seats in the back seat of the car are 59 per cent less likely to be injured in a crash than children using a seat belt alone. No helmet, no brain. Wearing safety helmets when cycling, scootering or skateboarding to school is a must. For cyclists, aside from being a law, wearing a helmet reduces the risk of severe brain injury by 74 per cent. Watch out for sneaky drive-

ways. If you can’t see the driveway from the footpath, remember to stop and look to make sure there are no cars exiting the driveway. Have a school travel plan. Teach children to use a safe route to school and to be aware of dangers when walking, cycling or scootering. Closely supervise new entrants when walking to school for the first time. Secondary and tertiary students: Devices down, heads up when crossing the road. Avoid digital distraction by removing your earphones when crossing the road, and stop walking if you need to use your cellphone. For drivers Double check intersections and crossings. A child might

dart across the street when you least expect it. They are also pretty hard to see in between parked cars. Stopping at intersections and slowing down in high pedestrian traffic areas will give you time to check if your path is clear of children. Slow down at school zones. 30-40kph variable speed limit zones will be operational again during school commute hours, and drivers are required to slow down when the lights are on or the signs are up. Passing school buses: Either way it’s 20kph. If a school bus has stopped the law requires you to slow down and drive at 20kph or less until you are past it no matter which direction you are driving.

The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character that is the goal of true education. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Education Re-train, more options Because there are many ways to train and study, it is becoming much easier for adults to train or retrain. Adults are changing careers more often, and many keep working in one field while training in another. As an adult deciding whether to train or retrain, there may

be things to consider that are different from when you left school. Some of these are: • What would you like to study? • What type of training would suit your needs? • Do you qualify for Recognition of Prior Learning

Some children and teenagers experience anxiety as school goes back.

Anxious school kids? The start of the new school year is a time of excitement and nervous anticipation, but for some young people those nerves can bubble up into fully-fledged anxiety. A Massey University psychologist with expertise in helping children and families says parents have a key role in helping kids to manage anxiety. A touch of first-day nerves at the outset of the year is normal, but parents need to be aware of when anxiety levels start to affect their child’s wellbeing, Dr Kirsty Ross says, a senior clinical psychologist at Massey’s Psychology Clinic. “Broadly, anxiety is apprehension about things in the future,” Kirsty says. “While it can be grounded in experiences from our past, often it centres around the ‘what ifs’ that our brain comes up with about what might happen in the future. These thoughts and worries can lead to physical responses that can promote ‘fight or flight’ reactions – such as feeling physically tense, hot, sweaty, increased heart rate,

nausea. These can all be signs of anxiety.” Young people can present their anxiety in different ways, depending on their age and developmental stage, she says. Younger children may have more physical signs, such as sore tummies or headaches, or their behaviour may change and they may be more clingy, irritable or tearful, or have challenging behaviours. And they may not recognise the link between the situation (starting the school year) and their feelings and behaviour. “The physical symptoms will be real – the child is not lying, but their sore tummy and nausea is in response to anxiety, rather than illness,” she says. As young people move through adolescence, their fears are centred more around social concerns, like fitting in with their peers, or achievement as they move into the senior years of high school. “Irritability, moodiness, changes in appetite and sleep are all typical in adolescents, but if they are particularly

marked around a situation, such as starting school, they may be indicators of a worried teenager.” She suggests some key tips for helping your child: • Help them to recognise their signs of worry and anxiety • Practice calm breathing with your child • Help your child to think of positive ‘what ifs’. • Visualisation - imagine walking into school, putting your bag away and sitting down at mat time. • Communicate with your child, teachers and school more broadly. • Celebrate success. For many children, this will be a time of adjustment before they settle successfully into the school year, Kirsty says. “However, if you notice mood or behavioural changes that concern you, and things aren’t improving, trust your instincts and talk to your GP or school counsellor if you are worried about your child. There are supports available for young people and their families.”

It frustrates him still that Janis’s attempts to start the search were delayed by careless messages and stupidity. “They didn’t even ask her where I‘d be. They were searching in the wrong places. “They also grounded all flights in the area.” One of his cobbers defied the ban and after some very bad language, searched the correct area. It was another mate, by accident flying a passenger plane where he wasn’t supposed to go, who picked up their beacon. Despite being in a wheelchair with his broken back and years of recovery, Dave continued to fly helicopters until a recommended second surgery to improve function left him ‘totally buggered’. “I had been able to use crutches and some of my other functions were fine. Not any more. I’ve drawn the short straw twice.” You’ll have to wait for the book ‘With No Regrets’, and the sequel now being written to find out the many, many other stories that Dave has to tell.

Hospice supported

Farmers store manager Karen Stevenson and manager Barbara Dalrymple hand over a cheque to hospice volunteer co-ordinator Moerea Mustard, hospice chief executive Judith Dellebeke, and hospice fundraising and events co-ordinator Sandy Inwood. The money was raised by the Blenheim store in the run-up to Christmas and Karen says people

were very generous, even though many had been affected by the 7.8 earthquake in November. Christmas is a time for family, and people also had the opportunity to add their memories of a loved one to a remembrance tree in the store, she says. Sandy says it is the third year Farmers and their staff have supported hospice in this way.

Moa gets a name She does look a bit like a tree growing amongst the grasses, and she is made out of plants. “We also like the way the word sounds a bit like a horse’s ‘neigh’, as she stands tall looking also similar to a horse amongst the grasses.” There were nine species of moa, five of which used to roam around the lower Wairau and Opawa river areas. Rose says people are welcome to walk along the stopbank by their property to visit the moa and see the wetland, but asks them to ring first.

Suggested by Karen and her children Ceshwa and Jazmin Villarroel, the name has varied significance and wins the family a family kayak tour from Driftwood Eco Tours. “We think it’s only right she has a Maori name,” they say. “Literally, according to the famous Ngata dictionary, it means ‘grassy tree’.

Nestled between Hunter’s entrance and the cellar door, Hunter’s Garden Café is open to welcome locals and visitors. The café is in its third year since it was relaunched with a simple yet clever concept of serving tasting platters and nibbles along with a selection of wines to sample. Owner Jane Hunter says people can relax and enjoy some light meals or simply treat themselves to a coffee and muffin. There is a children’s play area outside and plenty of indoor and outdoor space to relax in. The cafe has a mouth watering selection of platters to choose from that are great to share, and can be plated for larger groups.

They include: • Cheese • Mixed meats • Hot smoked King Salmon • Children’s option The platters have been designed to be light, full of flavour and perfect alongside a glass of Hunter’s wines. For people seeking something a little more filling there are a a number of other tasty dishes to choose from from mini pizzas and the Hunter’s salad, through to paninis and a tasty pie. New to the menu this year is the addition of German sausage products. The Swiss Brat sausage served with coleslaw and fries is looking to be a popular choice for diners as well as the Fleisch Kase, which translates as ‘meat cheese’. This dish has two steak

shaped pieces of pork sausage that look like swiss cheese and are also served with coleslaw, fries, mustard and tomato sauce. To finish lunch on a sweet note there is the decadent chocolate brownie and icecream with a selection of toppings, or go for the warmer and equally tempting option of the Hunter’s Affogato. Of course any dining experience at Hunter’s Garden Café is not complete without the Hunter’s Wine Flight. Select three wines from the list provided and sample what Hunter’s does best Winemaking! Back to basics for WRC Sweden Rally Sweden will be a confidencebuilder for Hayden Paddon and John Kennard as they return to the World Rally Championship competition on Friday, after being involved in the fatality in the Rally Monte Carlo last month. The WRC’s only true winter rally, Rally Sweden is one of Paddon’s favourites. “It’s a rally I really enjoy,” says Paddon following a one day snow test with Hyundai Motorsport in the 2017-spec Hyundai i20 Coupe world rally car. “I enjoy the conditions in Sweden and the fast nature of the stages which take us across the border into Norway. Last year, we were able to be competitive there.” Paddon and Kennard secured a history-making second place at the 2016 edition of Rally Sweden. Paddon became the first non-European driver to finish on the podium on the snow rally and was one of only seven non-Scandinavian drivers to finish second in Sweden’s WRC event. “It’s a good rally for us to build the confidence back and the goal is to get back to basics by enjoying the driving again.” Of his one-day test with the team, Paddon says the feeling with the car is really positive. “A good step from 12 months ago on a snowy road. As this is one of the fastest events of the year, we will really see the benefits of the

Shearing win Marlborough farmer Chris Jones won the 20-sheep Open machine shearing final at the Inangahua A&P Show on Saturday, and then told younger shearers to stick around because there’s hope for them all.“I’ve been coming here at least 25 years now, I’m 59 next week, and I’ve never won any of the classes at this show.” Organisers say the veteran shearer has been a prolific winner over the years on the Marlborough-Nelson circuit.

Summer Runners Marlborough Harriers continue the Summer Runners series with tomorrow’s run the third race in the 5km Time Trial series, starting at 5:45pm for walkers and 6:00pm for runners on Thursday evening. Meet at the Taylor River behind Athletic Park. Everyone is welcome to participate. These runs are non-competitive and are made as enjoyable as possible. Join in and run all events or just the ones you want to. The cost is $2 per week or $20 for the season (families $25 for the season).

extra power and aerodynamics of the 2017-spec cars here. About two-thirds of the rally route is new, which Paddon says will mix things up a bit for all 14 WRC drivers. “It’s crucial to write good, new notes on these fast stages, but the weather and amount of snow differs year to year and this can affect the

stages more so.” From the perspective of Blenheimbased Kennard, Sweden’s snowy conditions can be challenging in terms of visibility. “Being faster in the new car, it’s even more important for me to take care with visual references to know where I’m up to with the pace notes,” says Kennard.

Clubs invited to use new Lansdowne Park pavilion The Marlborough District Council is asking sports clubs how they would like to use the new administration building at Lansdowne Park, part of the sports hub pavilion. The pavilion is part of the Council’s $4.8M multi-stage redevelopment of Lansdowne Park, one of the biggest investments in sports amenities to be made in this district. Council reserves and amenities planner Mark Witehira says the council is working with designers to come up with a concept that will cater for current and potential users of the park. “While the sports already based at Lansdowne - Marlborough Rugby, Netball, Softball and Touch - have had their say, Council now wants to hear from any other sports or recreation groups that might want to use the facilities; we’re asking for expressions of interest for use of the pavilion from sports clubs large or small.” Clubs may choose to rent office space or just a desk, they may only require casual

use of a ‘hot desk’ and office equipment, or they might hire a meeting room for their AGMs, he says. “This truly is a community facility, as well as a significant investment in Marlborough’s sports and recreation infrastructure, so we want the sports community to tell us how it is going to work best for them.” The pavilion building itself will be a similar shape to Renwick’s Giesen Sports and Events Centre and the Port Marlborough Pavilion at Picton’s Endeavour Park. Sports clubs are encouraged to contact the Council with their requirements or suggestions. “It’s an exciting opportunity for us all to work together to ensure all sporting codes that wish to be involved in this brand new sports hub are catered for,” Mark says. Sports clubs should outline their interest in a message to Mark Witehira at the Marlborough District Council (03) 520 7400 or by email to mark.witehira@ marlborough.govt.nz
