What’s up? Story and photo by Cathie Bell Publican Mike Pink is wondering what has happened to his old bar in Redwoodtown. Mike sold the Old Bank Tavern last year and took over at the Junction Hotel in Spring Creek, but says final payments on the sale of the business have not been made and the building is left shut. However, the new owners say they have been held up sorting out things, such as a liquor license, and hope to be open next week. Continued on page 2. Old Bank pub shut and ‘watch that space’ Continued from page 1 Mike Pink says he worked hard to build up the Old Bank Tavern as a 100 per cent craft beer pub and had made it ‘a popular watering hole’. “I’ve been approached by regular customers annoyed at what’s happened. “To those people and customers of the Old Bank Tavern whom I was very happy to have had the pleasure of meeting and others who have approached me, I can only say I am very sorry. “I never intended to see it closed. “I, my wife and all my staff had worked hard to establish a very good Craft Beer Bar which won runner-up Best Bar for two years and got a fantastic lot of help and a lot of friends over the eight years I had the

pleasure of serving you. “I sold this establishment in good faith to someone I thought would continue with the craft beer. “He also wished to turn it into an Indian restaurant & takeaway which would have complimented the brews I had on tap. “At present I have a lot of very unhappy ex-customers some of whom come to my new venture, The Junction Hotel at Spring Creek. Also I am a lot of money short at which action is being taken. “All I can say is ‘watch that space’.” The new business will be run by Shalin Prasad, and a spokesman for the owners says they hope to open the bar as an Indian restaurant and takeways next week. The spokesman says the payments to

Mike have been held up but once the restaurant is open, ‘everything will be sorted out’. There had been ‘lots of things changed’ which has held up the restaurant plans, he says. “We’re just sorting out things, it won’t be very long now. “We hope to open by next week.” Liquor Licensing Authority secretary Mike Porter says an application for a temporary authority to sell alcohol was received from Shalin on Wednesday and is going through the process. This may take a few days, he says. A temporary authority enables alcohol to be sold and supplied for up to three months.

Sold-out festival ready to rock By Cathie Bell This year’s Wine and Food Festival has sold out, and there will be no door sales at tomorrow’s event. Wine Marlborough general manager Marcus Pickens says the online ticket sales sold out on Wednesday and there were ‘very few’ tickets available at other places such as New World Blenheim and the Isite, which sold out yesterday. “There won’t be any door sales.” Many people bought tickets well in advance, and Marcus says one of the surprising things is how few refund requests there have been after the November earthquake made travelling from Christchurch to Blenheim a much longer trip. “We have only refunded two from Kaikoura and literally a

handful from Christchurch. “Good on them for commitment.” A significant number of tickets this year have sold to locals who took advantage of an ‘early-bird’ offer, but good numbers are coming from Christchurch, Wellington and Auckland. The festival runs from 10.30am until 6pm at the Brancott Vineyard. Entertainment on the main stage includes Hollie Smith and Newtown Rock Steady, as well as Supergroove. The culinary tent will have Kasey and Karena Bird, and Annabelle White, as well as local chef Bradley Hornby, and visitors Monty Koludrovic and Mark Southon. The event is R18 and identification is needed to prove this when entering.

Community foundation keen to get more requests

By Cathie Bell Communicating with others is a key part of settling into a new community, and English Language Partners is looking for more people to help teach English to migrants and refugees. The organisation has received a grant from the Nelson Bays Community Foundation and the foundation is keen to help other groups in Marlborough, which is part of its territory. English Language Partners delivers training to migrants and refugees across the top of the South Island. Blenheim-based co-ordinator Charlotte Whitlow says their clients come from all over the world, and there has been an increase in demand for language help since the Government changed immigration rules. “People with visas who want to become residents need to up their English language skills because the requirements are higher now.” Nelson-based manager Tony Fitzwater says the biggest demand is from Chinese and South Americans, as well as Thai and Koreans. “It’s a really multicultural place, Blenheim.” As well as classes, the organisation offers a home tutoring service. English Language Partners is looking for more people to help out, and is starting training for new tutors next month, which will see people end up with a New Zealand Qualifications Authority-accredited qualification, level two in home tutoring. Charlotte says the training is ‘quite comprehensive’ and takes three Saturdays, before the tutor is matched with a learner.

Easter trading on Shops will be able to trade on Easter Sunday this year after councillors yesterday approved a policy to enable retailers to open their shops. The Government changed the law last year to enable councils to set policy for their districts.

Fuel price study The Government is to look at fuel prices around the country after complaints companies are making what Energy Minister Judith Collins described as ‘super-normal profits’. The Fuel Market Financial Performance Study, which is expected to be completed by the end of June is designed to determine how fair petrol and diesel prices are at the pump, after data showing fuel margins have more than doubled over the past five years.

English Language Partners manager Tony Fitzwater and coordinator Charlotte Whitlow.

The Nelson Bays Community Foundation grant to English Language Partners helped the organisation with its operations, particularly supplying computers, Tony says. “If it wasn’t for the likes of these guys, we wouldn’t exist… If it wasn’t for them and other givers, we wouldn’t be able to deliver effectively what we deliver.” Nelson Bays Community Foundation execu-

tive officer David Kerr says the foundation has a relationship with the Tindall Foundation, and administers grants for the family and social services sector across the top of the South Island on its behalf. It also has funds to make general grants and grants for specific environmental projects. Details can be found on its website nbcf. org.nz.

Taylor Pass Honey Co has appointed former Yealands Wines head Jason Judkins to the newly-created role of chief executive officer to drive international growth, founder and managing director Darren Clifford says. Clifford will remain with Blenheim-based Taylor Pass Honey Co as a director and shareholder and will take on the newly-created role of Executive Director. Judkins will be based in Auckland and will spend his time between the Marlborough operations and international markets.

Police to increase

Breakfast for the homeless By Celeste Alexander A group which prefers to remain anonymous has been putting on a free breakfast for the homeless each month and has one scheduled for this Sunday. The group is being hosted by

the Harvest Life Church to put on the breakfast and lunch. One of the members says the group is inspired to do more for those less fortunate from a biblical command to ‘love their neighbour, to clothe them, feed

them and house them’. “The format is designed to integrate the homeless more into our communities through the churches and to look to meet any other wrap around needs. “We would like to thank

Mike Newman from Meaters of Marlborough for his support as well as the Oasis and Baptists churches for hosting these events,” he says. Doors open on Sunday at 8.30am and breakfast will be served at 9am.

More police will be based in Marlborough, but the allocation of the extra 1125 police staff, including 880 extra officers, announced by the Government last week has yet to be decided, Police Commissioner Mike Bush says. The extra officers will go across all 12 Police Districts and comes with new targets in areas such as attending home burglaries and reducing deaths from family violence, he says.

EQC deadline

People with properties damaged by the 7.8 magnitude earthquake on November 14 need to get their claims lodged with EQC by Tuesday February 14. Residents who are yet to make a claim with EQC are encouraged to ensure their applications are in on time.

By Cathie Bell Fifteen year-old Jack Yang has chosen to move to Blenheim and study at Marlborough Boys’ College to help him achieve his goal of becoming a filmmaker and one day working for Sir Peter Jackson’s Weta Workshop. Jack is one of eight secondary school students from Ningxia, Marlborough’s sister region in China, who visited this week. He says his dream is to become a filmmaker, and his study here will help that. “My dream company is Weta, so I want to get a job there and make films for myself.” He is studying art and computer studies at Marlborough Boys’ College, and has already visited the Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre, where many of the displays are made by Weta and many of the planes are owned by Sir Peter. The group are the first students to arrive in Marlborough since the sister-region relationship was formed, and Jack is from Number Nine School in Ningxia’s capital Yinchuan,

Farming extension Applications for funding from the primary industries Earthquake Relief Fund have been extended for an extra month until March 31, Primary Industries Minister Nathan Guy says. Local earthquake recovery coordinators, working with the Rural Support Trusts, have held well-received small workshops to guide farmers on their applications and these will also be extended. Any grants will be a contribution towards repairs of uninsurable assets such as fences or access tracks, covering a maximum of 50% of costs. There will be an excess of $5,000 and capped at $50,000 per applicant. Farmers who need an extra hand on the farm as a result of November’s earthquake and aftershocks can also call 0800 FARMING (327 646) and have their needs matched with skilled workers and volunteers. A further $600,000 has been allocated to this programme for the next four months.

Story and photo by Celeste Alexander After months of working around builders, the brand new expansion and refit of the Unichem Springlands Pharmacy has finally been completed and formally opened last Thursday. Directors Vivien Mackintosh, Tim Roper, Paul Townend and Kim Lischner-Crawford decided that the expansion had been ‘long overdue’ so set about launching a design project. “It had become increasingly obvious that we could no longer offer the service that we desired to our customers in 100 square metres of pharmacy space, so we challenged Mark Greenland of In Design to provide us with a state of the art professional pharmacy. “The design embraced the latest technology and retail merchandising techniques, provided room for additional services

and allocated space for future technology. “Effectively the pharmacy has nearly tripled in size and we have also welcomed the team from NZ Post who have integrated the franchise into the pharmacy,” Tim says. The pharmacy hosted a formal gathering on Thursday night, among those were representatives from the Springlands Health Centre, Springlands Lifestyle Village, the Primary Health Organisation and builders and contractors who worked on the expansion. During the speeches Tim thanked the staff and customers for their patience as well as landlord John Derry who has supported the pharmacy’s growth. The pharmacy will be open seven days a week and the Post Shop service will also be available during this time.

COUNCIL NEWS Rebuilding Marlborough’s stop banks

Work is underway to repair river stopbanks in Blenheim that were damaged by the earthquake. Crews have repaired stopbanks at the Wairau Bar and Diversion, and are currently repairing a stopbank in

Spring Creek. Further stopbank work is planned in Grovetown and Tua Marina. A video of the stopbank repair work can be viewed on the Council’s YouTube page.

Mickey and Donald are back!

Too many boatie speedsters out on the water

Too many recreational boaties are still travelling too fast in busy parts of the Marlborough Sounds. Harbourmaster Luke Grogan says, while lifejacket use is now widespread, speed is still posing a danger. “Too many vessels are being operated at unsafe speeds in congested areas. Every boatie should know the regulations mean boats must not travel over 5 knots within 200 metres of shore yet we’ve had to send warning letters or issue infringement cases to about two dozen people already this summer. The message is taking a while to get through.” The biggest problems are in the bays where there’s lots going on; beaches that are popular with

swimmers and kayakers and where there are boats coming and going from the water. Particular high risk areas are marked with 5-knot buoys and boaties are warned that there is a zero tolerance for anyone caught speeding in these marked areas. A free safe skipper training workshop is available for anyone interested in learning about safe boating and managing the specific boating risks that exist in the Marlborough Sounds. The workshop includes practical tuition on a Coastguard or Harbour Master vessel. Courses fill up fast but spaces are available on Saturday 25 February and Saturday 11 March. Contact the Harbour Master for details, (03) 520 7400.

Does your sports club need space at new Lansdowne Sports Hub?

Councillor Oddie with some young Blenheim visitors who’re pleased to see the familiar characters back on the foreshore; from left, 5-year-old Harry Sunde and 3-year-old Kaden Sunde, and Jacob Burkhart and Finlay Calder, both aged 3. Two longstanding features of the Picton foreshore have made their return, complete with a fresh coat of paint. The concrete figures of Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck have featured in hundreds of holiday photographs and been clambered over by countless children in the

foreshore play area for the last six decades. Picton councillor David Oddie says members of the Picton’s Men’s Shed have done a fine job smartening up the pair, smoothing out the nicks in their concrete and sprucing up their overall appearance.

Is your brick chimney secure? Earthquakes have shown the damage that can be caused by a chimney collapsing through the roof. Experience suggests that unreinforced chimneys can be unsafe in an earthquake even if a property is otherwise structurally sound. The risk increases where a chimney lacks any bracing or where chimney mortar has deteriorated.

Council’s Building Control team suggests that any property owners who can see potential problems with their chimneys seek further advice from an engineer with expertise in seismic strengthening work. Further inquiries, contact the Council, Ph: 03 520 7400. For more information, visit the BRANZ website: www.branz.co.nz/EQ.

The Marlborough District Council is requesting expressions of interest from Marlborough’s sports codes for the use of the new Lansdowne Park Sports Hub Pavilion. This building will be a community resource, and Council is open to ideas on how it can best be utilised by local sport organisations of any size. There are a number of options available for potential users. For example, a club could

choose to rent office space, a desk, book a hot desk on a casual basis (including use of office equipment), or use a meeting room for AGMs or other functions. The Sports Hub is scheduled to be ready for use by 2018/19. Please send expressions of interest to Mark Witehira at the Marlborough District Council 03 520 7400 or mark.witehira@marlborough.govt.nz.

Positive Ageing – Helping Grandparents Caring for Children Sometimes due to family upheaval grandparents can find themselves unexpectedly raising a young family again. As the school year begins, this can cause enormous emotional and financial stress, especially for a grandparent living on a pension. There can be many issues to deal with; the costs of feeding and clothing the children, legal issues relating to custody, counselling needs and, not least, the toll it can take on personal health. If you’re a sole grandparent, Birthright Marlborough Inc. may be able to help you find respite care and counselling and assist with school uniforms and extra-curricular activities. There is some support available through WINZ and through various community organisations in Marlborough offering counselling, parenting courses and support groups.

Game of clones Yet another radical activist come broadcaster being ‘forgiven past behaviour’ (stated in televised news), whose ability and experience (cough, cough) leapfrogs party faithful to the front bench in desperation to gain the reins of power. Oh what political and social behaviour intrigue voters are expected now to swallow. History repeats from the likes of HC, and others since gone.

The final to be played September 23, unknown allegiances until last goal scored, open sledging allowed all the way, no one out until the day, all players free to boast of nothing. All waiting for the public to say ‘you’re fired’! The election game begins. One thing they never say is a yes or no - just the rhetorical vibes and bribes.

What a beautiful sight the large red flowering gum tree is on the corner of Old Renwick and Thomsons Ford Road. We are so lucky to have such a magnificent specimen thanks to our forbearers.

Become your surroundings I don’t know why a lot of fellow kiwis are even interested in Trump and American politics. My mother said “If you want to save the world, start with your home and community first.” Instead of trying to fight for rights that don’t apply to you and your family, take a look at what’s going on in your own backyard and deal with those problems.

Sweet as sun festival What a shame for Dave and the team of Sweet As Sun Festival. Great music, well run and great vibes. Just the no show factor let it down. Poor effort people. Gigs like this will be missed.

Super rugby Looking forward to the super rugby and NRL season to kick off hope it will be more epic than last year.

Cycle/Walking Paths

Thank you

Well done on the news items and photos of the ceremonies last Friday. I have been looking in vain in Mex issues! The pathway from Blenheim to Spring Creek is a great asset.

Thank you so much to the wonderful lady who helped my daughter home after she fell off the flying fox at Oliver Park on Wednesday Feb 1. She ended up in hospital with a concussion. I wanted to thank you for your kindness and concern. It is really appreciated. I’m sorry I don’t know your name, thank you again.

Learn your road rules!

Consider your neighbours

I am sick of drivers failing to give way turning out of Rowberry Road onto Dillons Point Road. Learn your road rules. Top of the T goes before me!

Nosey people please stop laughing/talking really loudly on weeknights. Please respect that your neighbours don’t all have the luxury of not having to get up for work. It’s just the decent thing to do. No one hardly complains. Please just think about others.

Disappointed fan I have watched Shortland St for the past 20 years but lately have been very disgusted in the content, young people I know watch it and you get no warning of what’s coming up.

TV coverage In total agreement with both txts on pathetic lack of TV news coverage over the bulk of summer, and what little is all about that Trump, which means ‘fart’ where I was born, by the way, rather apt I reckon!

Save water The council is aware of the running water Ida St and Redwood St, it is from a spring run off, there are several in Blenheim.

Reply to last weeks hours of dog barking. I’m not the person who has the large dog off Redwood Street but am a little dog owner. I have had animal control come round to me and as I work had not realised my dog was barking. Maybe it would be a nice idea to talk to the people rather than just call dog control. Maybe they are working too and don’t realise. Dogs do bark, it’s their way of communicating. Spare a thought for those of us who have dogs and love them very much but have to work. W h a t ’s y o u r m o s t annoying habit? Worrying about the backyard lawn growing. One of my best holidays was... Italy.

What ’s your fondest childhood memory? Having a pet sheep which turned into a ram.

Who would you love to share a meal with and why? David Bowie and Iggy Pop, these guys would be hilarious and fascinating. True artists. What is the one thing people don’t know about you? I’ve got OCD from doing a ready lawn backyard.

Valentine’s Day Quotes about being in love A poem for your loved one “Love is like a friendship caught on fire: In the beginning a flame, very pretty, often hot and fierce, but still only light and flickering. As love grows older, our hearts mature and our love becomes as coals, deep-burning and unquenchable.” – Bruce Lee

You are the brightest star, and I’m in love with who you are. You are the poem I never knew how to write, and this life is the story I have always wanted to tell. I love you. I am who I am because of you. You are every reason, every hope, and every dream I’ve ever had, and no matter what happens to us in the future, every day we are together is the greatest day of my life. There is no master plan. My heart is in your hands. For love, I’d do anything. For you, I’d do more. You and I are meant to be together. Because of you, I can feel myself slowly but surely

“There is no remedy for love but to love more.” – Henry David Thoreau “A career is wonderful, but you can’t curl up with it on a cold night.” – Marilyn Monroe “Spread love everywhere you go. Give love to your children, to a wife or husband, to a next-door neighbour.” – Mother Teresa “To the world you may be just one person, but to one person you may be the world.” – Brandi Snyder

Hire to save time and money

UltraQuip owner Daniel Fisher.

involves a huge number of extra costs, including registration fees, storage, maintenance and inevitable repairs. This frees up capital to be used where it is most needed, plus you have the advantage of choosing from a huge range of equipment so you can begin work immediately. Time-effective Ensuring that your equipment complies with industry regulations means regularly carrying out timeconsuming services and maintenance procedures. Hire companies do this for you to ensure you don’t have to spend valuable time (or money if you outsource the work) doing it yourself.

Meeting temporary soars in demand If you already own equipment and business enters peak demand, you may find yourself needing extra pieces to keep up. It might make more sense to hire these rather than to pay a high amount, then find out the equipment you purchased is not suitable for your needs. Trial equipment before committing to buy If you do plan to purchase equipment, hiring is a great way to trial a number of options.

‘We know machinery’ UltraQuip HIRE is a new division of the business UltraQuip, locally owned and operated by Daniel Fisher, supplying brand new, quality hire equipment across Blenheim and Marlborough. Daniel’s experience from over 10 years in the landscape and construction industries means he knows machinery and what local people and businesses need. UltraQuip HIRE now has

Businesses large and small can reap the benefits of hiring equipment and tools rather than purchasing them. It’s a good option when wanting to use the very latest technology from leading brands without having the big overhead costs of their purchase. Or course, there is more than just financial gain hiring rather than buying. Business owners can be rest assured the equipment has been cleaned, serviced and tested and are ready to use. Here are some other benefits to hiring. Cost-effective Equipment is expensive to buy and

GARDENING

THIS WEEK WITH WALLY RICHARDS

Tomatoes and growing We are already halfway through a summer that did not happen and a number of people have commented on the long time it has taken for their tomatoes to ripen. Insufficient direct sun light is really causing lots of problems for gardeners. Here we are in February and not only has there been only a handful of good sunny days, there are also too many days and nights of chilly winds. The weather is more like being halfway though autumn instead of summer. This can happen sometimes when we have an Indian Summer with mild temperatures going into winter with shorter day light hours, which triggers premature flowering. My observations are that a couple of self sown Russian Red tomatoes, one outside in a sheltered raised garden and another in a small glasshouse have done very well. The glasshouse one produced ripe tomatoes before Xmas and the outside one in early New Year. If not for these two feral tomato plants I would still be waiting for my own seed raised tomatoes to ripen. One big plus about this crazy weather is that the dreaded psyllids and whitefly have not been a problem as the temperatures have not been favorable for them to breed. On a dry, sunny day remove some leaves to open up the fruit to the sunlight (where there is some) to encourage your tomatoes to ripen and grow in these more trying weather times. Bottom leaves are good to remove as any insect pests are most likely to be on those leaves. The leaves should be sealed in a plastic bag to rot in the sun and then placed in the compost or on top of the soil in gardens where there are no tomatoes or potatoes. Laterals are the side shoots of tomatoes that emerge from the area between trunk and leaf. If you allow these to grow you will end up with a massive plant having to use multiple stakes to support all the stems, foliage and fruit.

The fruit will tend to be smaller as a lot of the growth is going into vegetation rather than the fruit. Removing the laterals will reduce the amount of fruit but these should be bigger as a result. When removing leaves, laterals, flowers or fruit, this should always be done on a sunny day when the air is dry, as moisture from humidity can allow disease to rise up and enter the wound. A important factor in growing tomatoes is to keep feeding the plant a top quality tomato food even after you start to pick ripe fruit. As long as the growing conditions are favorable the plant will keep growing and producing fruit, but being a gross feeder you must keep feeding. My own Wallys Secret Tomato food is preferred by many gardeners who report great results from it each season. There is not only ample nitrogen for growth but plenty of potash to ensure good fruit with excellent flavor. Having Neem Tree Powder incorporated with the food gives protection against some insect pests. Produce, fruit in particular, apples along with honey are going to be expensive this year because of the unusual weather conditions so a word of advise for gardeners, put in winter crops now and save some money later on.

Dear Eden Park streaker Thank you for interrupting an absorbing first Chappell Hadlee cricket match between New Zealand and Australia last week. I was sitting there watching this world-class sports event hoping a muppet like yourself would interrupt it by taking your clothes off and running round on the grass like a toddler learning to walk for the first time. I was hoping you’d get taken down in a hard tackle from security.

Sadly for my dreams, you have quite a good right-foot step which dashed my hopes. Sure, people cheered you on but in reality it’s embarrassing that an adult chooses to do such a silly thing. You paid for a ticket to see a spectacle, not be the spectacle - show some respect. The fact you escaped a fine and only got a warning means it was probably ‘job well done’ for you. When you decided to wear pants again, you should have

been made to put your hand in your pocket and produce a payment for a four-figure fine. Finally mate, work on your tan game, pasty is never in, take it from someone who knows. Anyway, being kicked out of the ground shows how foolish a choice you made. Imagine missing that finish, the sixes, that run out. The joke isn’t just on you, it is you. Have a nice day.

Another bronze and personal best for local speed skater By Celeste Alexander Local girl Erin Green travelled to Timaru at the weekend to compete at the National Bank Track Champs. Although she did not return with all the bronze medals she was aiming for, she still managed one bronze in the time trial and bettered her personal best by a second. Erin, the only Marlborough competitor, raced in the juvenile class against others who had more racing experience. Despite being pipped at the line and gaining two fourthplace positions, Erin still walked away happy with her efforts, her mother and coach Roxanne Green says. “Erin would love to have won bronzes but she can be happy knowing she did really well. I’m proud of what she has done. “ T h e ex p e r ie n c e sh e gained from competing against these other more experienced skaters was really good. She has one more year in the juvenile class so she’s hoping it will be her year,” she says. Erin will be taking a break from speed skating now Local speed skater Erin Green with the bronze medal she won before the Nelson speed in Timaru at the weekend. Photo provided.

Did you get a puppyImportant for things Christmas? to think about...

Keep your puppy’s environment safe. Puppies are naturally curious. Provide a safe area for your puppy to play. A securely fenced area is essential.

All puppies over 3 months old must be registered and microchipped. Neutering your puppy can help prevent the increasing number of unwanted dogs put down every year. Talk to your local vet or Animal Control.

Pet your puppy often. It is important to stroke your pet’s body, legs and head several times daily. This helps create a strong bond with your puppy.

Make sure your puppy gets plenty of exercise. Give your puppy about an hour of walk time a day broken into 2 - 4 walks. Please Note: Before your puppy interacts with other dogs make sure your puppy has had the required vaccinations.

Teach your puppy basic commands. Your puppy will be able to learn most commands while they are young. Teach your puppy to sit, to come, to stay and to lie down. Basic commands are a good basis for a well behaved dog.

Early socialisation of puppies is essential. Consider attending puppy training courses. With appropriate training and time a puppy will grow into friendly, well rounded adult dogs.
