Fun in the sun

Story and photo by Cathie Bell Last weekend’s Marlborough Wine and Food Festival has been described as one of the best ever. Organisers said the 8500 people at the sold-out event last Saturday had a great time, and the good times spilled over into the Blenheim central business district and elsewhere with cafes and bars reporting record turnovers. Continued on page 2 Locals Brooke Idiens and Jahmaica Huntley were among those having fun in the sun at the Marlborough Wine and Food Festival.

Festival draws them in for good times Continued from page 1 A large number of attendees were from Marlborough, lots there for their first time. One lady said she had lived in Marlborough 35 years and couldn’t believe she had waited so long to attend the festival. Wine Marlborough Marcus Pickens says the festival was a ‘great success’ and that was a tribute to all the people involved in organising it. “People were so happy, so enjoying themselves, it had a good vibe.” The festival is now in its 33rd year, and Marcus says its success is ‘just a combination of so many people’s hard work’. “The organisation behind the scenes, all the hard work, makes things go extremely smoothly. Our committee, so many volunteers and community groups involved – it’s incredible.” People come to the festival with ‘the right expectations’, he says, and police agreed, saying the crowds were well-behaved. “It’s the best day of the year, people

don’t want to stuff it up.” Marcus says the festival attendees had spilled out ‘right across the province’, filling cafes and bars all over Marlborough. “It’s pretty amazing to be part of something like that, it has a big impact.” Vines Village owner Jeff Fulton says his venue had a ‘fantastic’ weekend, with about 2000 people through on Sunday, enjoying food and ‘amazing’ music. “We’re trying to extend the weekend, that’s why Allan Scott’s had the Chefs on Tour on Friday and we have the Wind-down on Sunday.” Cloudy Bay Clams’ Dion Brown who organised the Chefs on Tour event at Allan Scott Family Wines last Friday evening says the event went really well. The ‘street food’ party raises money for charity Kids can, and last year raised more than $18,000. “We’re still finalising the numbers but we definitely raised a lot more than last year.”

Lake cricket approval A community cricket match on the dry bed of Lake Elterwater on Marlborough’s East Coast is not affected by an abatement notice asking a local farmer to stop using the lake bed to graze cattle and to cultivate. Marlborough District Council compliance manager Gina Ferguson says there’s nothing to stop the cricket match going ahead. It was only activity that has an effect on the subsurface of the lake bed, such as grazing cattle or planting crops, that is not permitted by the abatement notice, she says.

Renwick water saving A public meeting on water savings and water meters is to be held next Tuesday at 7.30pm at the Woodbourne Tavern. The council says other places have saved 25 per cent after water meters were put in, and it wants to talk to Renwick residents about options and get feedback from residents.

Gerald Harper and Rachel Russell with the wasp traps and poison that will be used to get rid of wasps in Picton and Waikawa.

Pest push-back on the rise By Cathie Bell Picton is becoming a hub in Marlborough for conservation efforts. This week, the Kaipupu Point Mainland Island Society is starting a Picton and Waikawa-wide wasp control programme. Next week, the Picton Dawn Chorus is launching its urban trapping programme with a public meeting on Monday at 7pm at the Endeavour Park Pavilion, with Wellington-based predator-free advocate Kelvin Hastie speaking. Kaipupu Point project coordinator Rachel Russell says the society holds permits to use wasp-specific poison Vespex on Kaipupu Wildlife Sanctuary and have an application being

processed at DOC to use it on the Wedge as well. “But we are also looking at doing this across Picton and Waikawa.” Wasp trap organiser Gerald Harper says the society is looking for people to have wasp traps in their backyards, and also for volunteers to help lay traps in public and council land around the towns. Wasps are in heavy numbers at Kaipupu Point and have become a health hazard, he says. “The bigger an area we can do, the more benefits.” Rachel says the trapping will begin when the wasps start eating protein, probably late this month. The group is lucky to have all the

funding it needs for the wasp eradication project, she says, having donations from a local trust and support from Marlborough District Council, Port Marlborough and the Department of Conservation as well as Te Atiawa.Picton Dawn Chorus project co-ordinator Siobain Browning says the group is targeting rats, stoats, and possums in its trapping programme, being launched at a public meeting on Monday. Heavily discounted Goodnature self-resetting traps will be on sale at the meeting, sponsored by Kiwibank. “The main thing is to get people thinking about trapping in their gardens, but more volunteers would be a bonus.”

Long time resident The lady thought to be Marlborough’s oldest resident, Betty Fleming, has sadly passed away aged 107.

Public reaction to the project is ‘really good’, she says, and she hopes there will be a good attendance at the meeting. Guest speaker Kelvin Hastie is a leader in the predator-free area movement, and is a catalyst for the Picton group’s being set up. The Picton Dawn Chorus group was set up just before the Government announced the Predator-Free New Zealand by 2050 goal, so the time is good, Siobain says. • To set up wasp traps or volunteer, contact Rachel Russell at the Kaipupu Point Mainland Island Society shop in Mariner’s Mall, Picton. • Picton Dawn Chorus public meeting, 7pm Monday February 20, Endeavor Park Pavilion.

Pet bylaw review Keeping more than a dozen poultry birds and four cats on a residential property will need permission under changes proposed in an update of Council’s bylaws. Bylaws are there to enable Council to deal with complaints about nuisance issues and matters of public safety, says Council solicitor Kaye McIlveney. The new rules will also ban roosters and will apply to caged birds such as budgies or canaries. Permission will also be required to keep any other farm animals in town, including bees. New bylaws would also enable the Council to act where a property or a motor vehicle is a public health risk, enabling steps to be taken where, for example, vermin are a problem or temporary toilets are creating odour.

By Cathie Bell Longtime Hunters winemaker Gary Duke was among the 24 people granted citizenship in Blenheim last week. People from Britain, India, Germany, the Phillippines, Netherlands, the United States, and Vietnam got their citizenship, as well as Gary, an Australian. He moved here permanently in 1991, and decided after retiring as Hunters’ chief winemaker last year, to take up citizenship. “I’ve been here that long, I thought ok, it’s time to step up and be counted. “I’ve spent most of my life here really, I’m happy here.” Gary says he’s ‘had a couple of stretches here’, first coming to New Zealand in 1969. “I liked the look of the country, I had some friends here. “When I first came here in 1969, there wasn’t a wine industry, I was working for a timber mill then.” Then he moved here 26 years ago to start at

Cruise ship gives to community By Cathie Bell Royal Holland Line cruise ship Noordam visited Picton last Friday and left behind three medical beds as gifts to the community. One of the beds is to be used by Port Marlborough in its sick bay on Waimahara Wharf, to ensure people are comfortable while waiting for further medical treatment, and the other two are to be used by the Seaview Rest Home in Picton. Ship’s master Captain Peter Bos says the beds on board are being upgraded as part of a shipping line change. “This is recycling, it’s good to recycle.”

St John’s Tony Cronin, who collected the beds for the rest home, says the beds will be put to good use. Port Marlborough business delivery manager Rhys Welbourn says the donation is a testament to the relationships the port company has been building with shipping lines using Picton. ISS-McKay ship’s agent Rob Burn says the cruise ships are keen to connect with the communities they visit, especially ones like Picton where cruise ships get good reception. “This shows people in the community that the ships have a benefit to them.”

St John's Tony Cronin, ship's doctor Bronwen Roman, Captain Peter Bos, Port Marlborough's Rhys Welbourne, and ship's agent Rob Burn with the donated beds.

MP urges input Enter your pics Kaikoura MP Stuart Smith is urging people to have their say on a Government proposal to move six salmon farms in the Marlborough Sounds. “I don’t want decisions made in isolation. It’s important people have their say, it’s part of the democratic process.” Primary Industries Minister Nathan Guy started a two month-long public Kaikoura MP Stuart Smith consultation last week to see what people think about moving six salmon farms to different sites, one in Tory Channel and five in the outer Pelorus Sound. Stuart says there is always a balance between different interests in the Sounds – fishing, aquaculture, and residents, both permanent and holidaymakers. “It’s always going to be a little bit tricky as there are conflicting interests. “This comes down to an environmental issue, that’s the reason for the proposed change.” • People have until 5pm on Monday March 27 to make their views known to the Government. Written comments can be emailed to aquaculture.submissions@mpi.govt.nz or posted to Salmon Farm Relocation, Ministry for Primary Industries, Private Bag 14, Port Nelson 7042. Norm Fowke Glass Animal cruelty and rodeos Dear Ed, Next weekend, animals will to subjected to fear, stress and torment at the Tua Marina rodeo. Rodeo is in reality, nothing more than a form of bullying. It is a far cry from the way those interested in good animal welfare aim to treat the animals. Normally docile bulls and horses are forced into aggressive behaviour by painful or irritating means such as flank straps, electric prods, tail twisting, and painful spurs. Vulnerable young calves will be put through the stress of being roped around the neck and yanked off their feet at high speed. As well as the stress animals are put through, injuries occur including torn ligaments, broken bones and severe bruising. A bull and a horse both died during events in the 2015-16 NZ rodeo season, with two bulls killed in the

previous season. Rodeo is condemned by vets, welfare experts and animal protection organisations worldwide, including our own SPCA. More than 62,000 people signed the petition to ban rodeo and Horizon research shows that two thirds of kiwis agree that rodeo causes suffering. As a society we are working to stop bullying, especially in schools and on social media. It is illogical, therefore, to be glorifying the bullying of animals. What type of message is this giving to impressionable children? Rodeo events inevitably cast a negative light on New Zealand’s reputation. If those in the Marlborough region care about animals, and disagree with abuse, I urge them to please avoid the rodeo. Marianne Macdonald SAFE campaigns manager

Dear Ed, I am an octogenarian and came to Blenheim to visit my grandchildren (and their parents) last weekend. On account of a slip-up on my part, and hopefully one or two ‘little seniors’ slip ups may be tolerated, I arrived exactly one Month earlier than I was expected. Personally I blame it on the identical dates and days for Feb and March this year. Looking forlorn I alighted from the Picton bus at the Blenheim railway station on Friday night. The staff of the railway cafe were very helpful and after a short deliberation the owner delegated all her duties to the smiling staff and put herself, her car and her cellphone into action for my sake. She ferried me to several addresses, assured me that she would look after me, made contact with my son who had to return from his family camping weekend in the Sounds and took me back to her Railway cafe and Ice creamery and fed me with a delightful meal while I was waiting for my son to rescue me. This sort of action may see her broke in no time, but I hope that it may cause a local inundation of her cafe by the local population to see this absolute gem called Leanne and her staff to admire the great person you have in your community. Thanks. Paul Franken Strathmore Park

Families happy with income By Cathie Bell Fa m ilies living in Marlborough and Nelson were more likely to report adequate income and they were the least likely to smoke, according to regional data on family wellbeing published by government agency Superu. Superu’s knowledge director Vasantha Krishnan says the data, which looks at family wellbeing across the nation, shows that Marlborough and Nelson families are relatively similar to other families around the country on many of the indicators, but they really stood out on income, with 83.9 per cent reporting adequate income versus 80 per cent nationally. They were also the least likely to have a smoker in the family, with 80% not having a smoker in the family compared to 77.6 per cent nationally, Vasantha says. “There were also some differences across a few family types. For example, couples under 50 were less likely to live in

well-off areas than other couples of the same age across New Zealand, and couples over 50 were less likely to have problems with their neighbours than other couples of their age around the country. “Further, members from single-parent families with young children felt like they were able to express their identity more easily in Nelson and Marlborough, suggesting perhaps that those who live in the region are more accepting of people’s differences.” In Marlborough and Nelson, there were 25,419 families at last count. “This is the first time that a picture of how families are faring has been provided at a broad regional level. It is important to understand family wellbeing, not just individual wellbeing.” Superu is a government agency that focuses on what works to improve the lives of families, children and whanau.

Diggers start work on SH1 slips Excavators have moved on-site and physical work begun on clearing the large slips on State Highway 1 to the north of Kaikoura, Transport Minister Simon Bridges says. Equipment has been moved on-site at Irongate, about 1km north of Blue Duck Road and at the slip site 300m north of Ohau Point. It is expected to take about three

weeks to clear the Irongate slip and make it safe to build an access road around the site. This will then enable the excavator to move north, building access tracks around three other slips to reach Ohau Point. Construction of these tracks will also open up some limited access for residents at Rakautara, who have been isolated between the slips since

November. Slip clearance is expected to get underway within the next few weeks at Ohau Point, one of the biggest and most complex of the nine significant slips along this section of SH1. Helicopter sluicing will continue on the remainder of the large slips, making these safe for clearance work to begin as soon as practical.

Top Team fun comes to town Almost 800 Marlborough kids are in for a feast of fun this week when the ASB Top Team competition returns to the region. From Monday through to Friday teams from five Marlborough schools will spend a day each taking part in 12 activities, six of them wet and six dry, which require balance, coordination, cooperation and problem solving. Yesterday was Whitney Street School’s turn, with taking on challenges such as rolling waka, barrel roll, wipe out, ladder golf, balance ball and faulty towers. ASB Top Team coordinator and Sport Tasman’s Motueka facility manager Jody Maru says the event is a good antidote to the earthquake jitters experienced by many families since November.

Top Team first came to Seddon and Ward after the 2013 earthquake and proved so popular other Marlborough schools have opted in. “There’s lots of fun, water and mud.’’ She says the eagerly anticipated event is more about encouraging participation than winning, while teaching children to work together to complete each activity. Three teams are drawn to receive spot prizes at the end of each day, and there are also prizes for the best dressed and free entry giveaways to the Weetbix Kids Tryathlon in March. Thanks to funding from ASB, Hirepool and Kiwisport, it costs schools just $2 per child to enter.

The Blenheim Orphans Club performing during a Valentines Day garden party at Maxwell Care Home yesterday.

Top notes from top blokes Story and photo by Celeste Alexander The Blenheim Orphans Club gave a well received Valentine’s Day performance yesterday to a group of rest home residents and staff. One of the founding members Ken Ham, who kept everyone entertained with music history and humour throughout the afternoon, told the audience they ‘love what they do’. “It’s a pleasure to bring joy to those we play for and we really enjoy getting out into the community to give much appreciated entertainment to social groups and rest homes,” he says. The Blenheim Orphans Club first began in 1972 and is affiliated to the Association of Kindred Clubs of NZ. This association encompasses the Savage Club and Orphans who have been in existence for over 150 years throughout the world.

They were formed to supply a venue for people to express themselves within the arts, song, music and sketch, without discrimination for the entertainment and fellowship of fellow members. Initially the Blenheim Orphans Club sported about 40 members. Two of the founding members, Ken Ham and Peter Scammell ,are still very active contributors. As a club, it functions between March and October. Meetings take the form of a variety concert and music plays a large part in the pleasure of membership and throughout the year, a group of musicians within the club perform for local groups. Meetings are held at the Redwoodtown School Hall. Anyone wishing to know more can contact Ken Ham on 578 5576, Leon Broadbridge on 577 6695 or John Henry on 578 8789.

Happy winner of full cricket kit Cricket practice was a bit more exciting than usual this week for the Marlborough Boys’ College first XI when player Benjamin McCullum was gifted a full cricket kit, just like the gear the Black Caps use. The gear, along with drink bottles for all the team and a bat signed by all the Black Caps, is a prize from the ANZ Bank’s Dream Big progamme and was delivered by Marlborough ANZ branch manager Rachel Toia at the team’s training on Monday afternoon. Ben, 14, plays in the college’s 1st XI and represents the Marlborough region in the under 15 grade. He says he hadn’t expected to win as this was the first competition he’d entered and he didn’t consider himself very lucky. Cricket is his favourite sport, and he likes to play it as much as he can. ANZ head of sponsorship and corporate marketing Sue McGregor says Benjamin was awarded his dream because he clearly has a strong desire to improve his cricketing career. “We know with the right support anyone can reach their full potential and achieve

Benjamin McCullum cricket kit winner

their dream.” ANZ is fulfilling cricketing dreams across New Zealand again this summer as part of its dream deliveries programme, providing an opportunity for cricketers of all ages and levels to have their own very personal cricket dream realised. Applications for the 2017 season are now open. Apply online via anz.co.nz/dreambig.

Aging gracefully with enhanceskin Enhanceskin, the clinic that brought walk-in walk-out varicose vein treatment to the Churchill Private Hospital in Blenheim, has introduced a range of non-invasive cosmetic services to the list of treatments they now carry out in Blenheim. Registered nurse Lacey Boyd is making regular trips to Blenheim, to offer Marlburians the benefit of her expertise in facial aesthetics. Lacey has been expertly tutored in facial rejuvenation by Dr David Orsbourn and is often praised by her clients for her gentle touch and calming manner. The clinic is committed to helping their clients age gracefully, Lacey says. “One of the most common concerns our clients express is that they don’t want to look ‘done’ following a cosmetic treatment, and that’s the last thing we want as well!” Lacey says that aging is part of life, and as we grow older, we should expect our face and bone structure to change, often leaving folds, hollows, sagging and asymmetries. “We can’t, and don’t, aim to turn back the clock on aging completely, but we can help correct these asymmetries, for fuller and balanced features, achieving a natural look that’s similar to how you looked a few years back.” Enhanceskin have put practices in place to guarantee that you’ll get the natural look you want to achieve when you invest in any treatment plans with them. Firstly, they offer a complimentary cosmetic consultation. Whilst you need to book in advance, this is a no-obligation, totally free of charge appointment, that allows you to discuss your requirements and concerns. Lacey suggests, you bring a photograph of your younger self to this initial consultation, saying, ‘Our aim is always to enhance your features so you look like you.’ The cosmetic services enhanceskin offers are then tailored into a treatment plan for you. This might involve just one treatment or it might be a combination of treatments.

Healthline, Pharmacists, GP or GP Practice Nurse, and Urgent After Hours GP offer professional health advice. If you arrive at Wairau Hospital’s Emergency Department with a non-urgent health concern you may be referred to your GP.

A lip enhancement may be used to create beautifully shaped lips that are elegant, sculpted and well defined.

Cosmetic Botulinum, a natural, purified protein, may be used to soften fine lines or wrinkles caused by facial expressions, stress and sun exposure, creating a smooth, rejuvenated and more youthful appearance. Dermal Fillers may be used to restore youthful facial curves lost through aging or after weight loss. The Liquid Facelift, sometimes called the Natural Lift, uses fillers to give immediate results, and almost guarantees a WOW moment when you look in the mirror following treatment. Lip enhancement may be used to create beautifully shaped lips that are elegant, sculpted and well defined, yet subtle; restoring your natural lip hydration and border, Whichever facial rejuvenation treatment a client decides upon, nobody knows what they are visiting enhanceskin for, it could be for a skin or vein assessment... so their secret to looking refreshed is safe. Friends and family will all notice how great an enhanceskin client looks, but nobody will know why… It’s the key to aging gracefully!

LITTLE MIRACLES

caring for your pre-schooler

First step into child’s education Early Childhood Education (ECE) is a fun and exciting time for families who choose to place their preschool aged children in a service, so to ensure you have chosen a service that’s right for your child here are some things to consider. Location. Is there good off-street parking and easy access to the building? Is the service close to anything that may cause noise distractions, like a main road? Style of care. How will they make sure your child is welcomed by the other children and can learn alongside them? How will the service keep you informed about what’s happening for your child? Can you stay with your child and help plan their activities for the day? Services offered. What experience do the staff have in supporting children with special needs? Facilities. Is the physical environment suitable and easily adaptable for your child’s needs? Is there suitable access to toilet and shower facilities? Go for some visits. It’s important to visit the ECE services or Kohanga Reo you’re interested in, so you can get a good feel for the children, the educators, and the environment. Take your child with you when you go, and watch closely to what’s going on and how your child responds.

Koru Institute of Training and Education

Taking Enrolments 2017

Enrol to upskill Thinking of study options or upskilling in the New Year? Blenheim-based Koru Institute of Training and Education Ltd (KITE) is taking enrolments as of January 19 for its February and March intakes. What makes KITE unique is its ability to offer free tertiary courses to students wanting to upskill or transition to new work, while also using its charitable status to provide funding and support for countless community groups, chief executive Monique Gemmell says. “The Maori values governing the institute create an effective working dynamic, where students and teachers are treated like family which make continuing education less daunting,” she says.

Last year KITE had over 300 students studying full and part time courses such as computing, business administration, te reo, social services and Treaty of Waitangi training. KITE also unveiled its newly refurbished building on Sutherland Terrace last year, showcasing its three new classrooms, two furbished classrooms, a smaller employment room and a classroom and garage space for its new Cable Logging programme. This was a welcome change for students who attended last year, enjoying all the comforts and amenities at their disposal. For more information, contact KITE or call in and see one of the friendly team at 5 Sutherland Terrace, Blenheim.

WELCOME: The entrance to the Koru Institute of Training and Education on Sutherland Tce.

About the CEO

Monique Gemmell is known for her untiring dedication to KITE, pouring her heart and soul into what she describes as “a role close to my heart”. With a busy family, three businesses to run, directorships and a massive extended family, Monique still goes into work with the same passion as she had right from the beginning. “The people side of the job is very important to me. Everything I do relates to helping people,” she says. At KITE, the team helps people in various ways from tertiary education, career planning, employment opportunities, youth at risk and what ever else is needed to be done.

“At KITE we have a great team who can adapt to the individual needs of all our students. “It’s about making education work for you,” she says. KITE was established by Te Atiawa Manawhenua Ki Te Tau Ihu Trust in 1998 to provide educational opportunities for Te Atiawa. But in 2003 it was bought out by charitable company Te Rau o Te Aroha Ltd and set up for the community at large.

On the constantly changing nursery design landscape, there’s no knowing what hot trends the season ahead may bring. Or is there? According to kid’s room design forecasts, chic nurseries in the year ahead will build on the main trends from 2016 such as

pastels and wood, but we’ll also be seeing a few suave additions to the nursery wagon in terms of layout and décor elements. Here’s a sneak peak into the pot of 2017 nursery designs which you should check out if you want your little one’s nest to stay up-to-date with trending décor styles.

Jane has photographed weddings at several Marlborough locations including the Old Barn and Vineyard Function Centre, vineyards, Bay of Many Coves and other destinations in the Sounds. “I have been so privileged to do some of the shoots and

Melissa Ryder was always the one helping friends plan their weddings before one day it was suggested that she do it professionally. It was an opportunity she jumped at and Inspire Events was created. “Wedding planning is a passion and obsession more than anything so the business grew out of my love for helping others organise their special day,” she says. Inspire Events offers personalised packages for weddings

and special events that provide everything from complete planning and management, to putting together the finishing touches. “The feedback I have had from brides is how relaxed they were as they had nothing to worry about, I was there to take care of it all. “This is important to me... making sure people can sit back and enjoy their day while I take care of all the details,” she says. Inspire Events can assist with any events throughout Marl-

borough. Rest assured you are in good hands when you have Inspire Events helping with your big day. Contact Melissa to find out more.

Sandy James Sandy James, owner of Trade My Craft, say she is the ‘luckiest girl in the world’ to be working alongside brides, helping them to find and create their dream wedding sowns. Sandy opened her bridal and alterations business in 2015 on Queen Street but after the Kaikoura earthquake in November of last year, her business was forced to relocate. However, out of what was devastating at the time, she says has come a whole new opportunity to work from home, and her

clients are absolutely ‘loving it’. “The feedback from brides has been very positive. They have commented on how welcoming and relaxed it is here,” she says. Sandy has converted a large room at her home into a private space where brides, wedding party and family members can go to view gowns and be professionally fitted. For brides who have already purchased their gowns online but need them altered to fit, Sandy encourages them to call her.

“It’s exciting to see what comes through the door.” Trade My Craft continues to offer a clothing alteration service and can collect and drop items off to the Queen Street Challenge for convenience.

Sarah Gatjens When buying or selling a property there is an alternative to having a lawyer involved. Sarah Gatjens is qualified in the field of conveyancing. Two years ago she was offered the opportunity to contract to company Key Conveyancing and works from her rural home. Not only does she take care of the legal process that transfers ownership of property from one person to another, but she can also help people wanting to refinance their mortgages. I especially like helping first

time home buyers. It is a very daunting process for the first time home buyer, we calmly take them through the process and keep them informed every step of the way. We also help them to prepare their Kiwisaver withdrawal applications and Homestart grant applications at no extra cost. “The other benefit is that Key Conveyancing offers fixed fees so people know what they are paying in legal fees,” she says. Sarah can manage a property transaction from start to finish

and likewise make refinancing a simple process with her prompt and efficient service. “Clients appreciate the convenience and simplicity of what I offer, so call me to find out how I can help you,” she says.

By Cathie Bell The biggest annual centre board regatta south of Auckland will be held in Picton next weekend. Queen Charlotte Yacht Club spokeswoman Christel Hopkins says the three-day Interislander Optimist Challenger and Port Marlborough Starling regatta will start on Friday February 17. Almost 200 entries have been received as of yesterday, she says. “So far, we have 100 entries in the Open Optimist fleet. We also have 50 sailors in the combined Green and Rainbow fleet and 34 in the Starling fleet.” Numerous volunteers are helping to make sure this will again be a well organised event, Christel says, with club members, ex-club members, junior sailors and several others all chipping in together with a lot of sponsors. While the fleets race, the yacht club will also host a ‘Taste of Marlborough’ event showcasing the best Marlborough has to offer: Seafood, salmon, fresh fish, clams, local wines, olive oils. Christel says extra training was held last weekend with quite a few of the 22 sailors participating in the Interislander and Starling regatta turning up. Conditions were windy, heading out past Mabel Island, but dropped during the training. “We should see Suede Cowley and Harry Edwards well up into Gold fleet with hopefully Loui Poletti, brother’s River and Moss Hopkins not too far behind. Fin Stichbury should make his mark on the green fleet. “In the Starlings both Oliver Cowley and Emily Overend will rank high.”

Winning fighters return home By Celeste Alexander Local boxing trainer Peter Warren took three of his fighters to a tournament in Christchurch last weekend and returned with not only two victories, but an increasing recognition of his club. Cameron Carmichael, Pete Nielson and Flynn Struthers competed at the ‘Battle From the Games’ tournament that featured two former Commonwealth Games representatives, Bowyn ‘Boman’ Morgan and Ikani Falekaono. The two competed at the 2014 Games in Glasgow, Scotland and went head to head in the ring on Saturday night. It was dubbed ‘one hell of a match up and a fight not to miss’ and Peter says it was lucky to get his three fighters in. “Normally the best of the best are picked for this level of tournament so I was rapt and so were the boys,” he says. Cameron fought in the heavy weight division against Michael Mairdroa. It was a rematch from an earlier fight where he had lost on a split division. This time Cameron won on unanimous points. “He fought his heart out and blew me away. He did everything right, listened to me in the corner and really stepped up,” Peter says. Pete went up against Luke Senkeldam in the middle weight division and also won his fight despite

NZ rep chosen Former Lake Grassmere man Richard Avery has been selected to represent New Zealand at the World 24 hour championships in Ireland in July. Athletics NZ has announced Richard and Kim Allan are selected to compete at the 2017 IAU World 24 Hour Championships in Belfast, Ireland on 1 July. They will head to Ireland for the competition in late June as they build up for the grueling 24 hour running race. Richard, who lives in Perth, broke the Western Australia 24 hour State record covering 240.431km in 24 hours during an event late last year.

cutting his ear in a suspected head clash. “Pete fought very professionally. His competitor was a bit of a gun so initially he wasn’t picked to win, but he fought through and won,” Peter says. The youngest of the three to compete was Flynn, who at 16-years, showed ‘courage and heart’ when fighting in the light heavy division against 24-year-old Cameron Rattray. “Flynn’s opponant came in strong with his age and experience. It wasn’t an easy fight for

Flynn but he fought really well and even though didn’t win, he can hold his head up knowing he did well,” Peter says. Following on from the tournament Peter says the invitations for tournaments are starting to flood in. “We really put Blenheim on a pedastal from how well my guys fought and already I have had several calls for more tournaments now. The dedication and skill these guys have, and they have only been training less than a year, has

already impressed other clubs.” The next tournament for Peter and his team is on March 3 in Christchurch and he’s hoping to take all 13 of his team down for it. This number will continue to grow he says as more and more people are joining the ‘Warrior Warren’s Boxing Gym’. “I have had a number of new kids starting and I’ve introduced a women’s ‘Mothers Day’ training on a Wednesday which is already getting a good response,” he says. For more information contact Peter on 022 644 6758.

This week’s Marlborough Harriers summer run is on tomorrow, with a ‘fun relay’. Meet at the car park in Harling Park Carpark top of Howick Road by 5.45pm to be put into a team. Everyone is welcome to participate. These runs are non-competitive and are made as enjoyable as possible. The cost is $2 per week or $20 for the season (families $25 for the season). For further enquiries contact Bill and Julie 572-9792, or check out www.harriers.net.nz .

Coast to Coast success Blenheim men Ian Martella and Josh Scott, competing as Team Moa Hunters, won the open men’s grade in the Coast to Coast race. They completed the race, which finished in Christchurch last Sunday, in 12 hours 44 minutes. Marlborough’s Yo McGill also competed in the two-day race, as an individual, and won the classic women (50-59 year) category, completing the course in 15 hours 55 minutes, finishing seventh woman overall.

Seventh place in Sweden The Rally of Sweden has been ‘a lot of disappointment’ for Kiwi rally driver Hayden Paddon and co-driver John Kennard The two overcame both personal and competitive challenges to secure a confidence-boosting seventh place at Rally Sweden, which finished last Sunday. Rally Sweden, round two of the FIA World Rally Championship, marked their first full event of the season following a crash and subsequent death of a spectator on the first day of Rally Monte Carlo in

January. Hayden says he ‘certainly underestimated’ the mental challenge of getting back in competition. “It’s been a trying weekend. We always knew it was going to be tough coming here after Monte, and I certainly underestimated that challenge.” The weekend was plagued with problems with the car, including losing powersteering, but the two rallied and ended with top-five stage times in all three of Sunday’s

special stages. With the third-quickest time on the penultimate stage, as well as one bonus point for fifth place on the rally-concluding power stage, the Kiwis finished in seventh place overall, a considerable boost in their confidence. Seventh place plus one power stage power point puts Paddon ninth on the WRC drivers’ championship points-table after two rounds of the 2017 WRC. Round three is in Mexico, 9-12 March.
