Rodeo to superbike
Continuted from page 1 Former rodeo saddle-bronc rider and motorcycle mechanic Terry Reed will be going down under next month with his iconic superbike, the Honda VFR750 RJ-RC30. Terry, who has always wanted one of the RC30 models says he ‘hunted’ for one and found this particular model in Australia before purchasing it late last year. It’s not for a private collection, however, he says it’s to be ridden, and will be travelling to Sydney with it to take part in the QBE Insurance International Festival of Speed on March 23. Riding it will be young Jake Lewis, a rising star of the motorcycle racing circuit here and internationally. According to Terry, Jake has a ‘seriously good chance’ at winning on it. “He’s a good rider, has a good head on him and does very well. He’s already got some laps in on it and managed to smoke the field by half a lap at a previous event. “It’s quick and I know that Jake is the one to win on it,” he says. According to Terry, Honda had to build a minimum of 2000 of these models to be eligible to race in the inaugural Superbike

World Championship series in 1988. Of the 3782 that were built, New Zealand’s allocation was five. Amazingly the RC30 won the championship and Honda also won the manufacturer’s championship that year. “It’s an iconic bike, it’s been a dream of mine to own one,” he says. It arrived in Blenheim last December and Terry set to work making a couple of
changes. “It will continue to evolve but it’s flying as it is. Out of the box this bike is damn good... it has all the right fruit,” he laughs. With its current gearing system Terry estimates that it has a top speed of 280km and weighs around 180kg. Terry has the bike displayed at the Motor Centre where he works before crating it and heading to Australia next month.
Wedding memories Story and photo by Celeste Alexander Valentine’s Day was celebrated in a very special way at Ashwood Park Retirement Village with a display of wedding photos, gowns and memorabilia from residents and staff. Lead diversional therapist Angelea Stanton says for some of the residents it can be a hard day to celebrate especially if they have lost loved ones. “We thought it would be nice to remember their wedding days and the memories that are special to them by putting together this display. “It’s been really well received by residents and their families who have come through for a look, and it’s also been a great conversation starter.
“There have been some amazing stories come out of this, things we otherwise may not have heard. “One of our residents shared photos of he and his wife on their wedding day and told us that even though they were really poor, it was the most magical day for them,” she says. One resident, Caroline Scott, was also happy to share her wedding day memories as well as her beautiful lace gown which was hung for all to see. Caroline married her late husband Lionel on March 9, 1957 at Hari Hari near Hokitika, 60 years ago. The gown was later worn by Caroline’s daughter Jill. The display opened on Valentine’s Day and will be up for a week.

Firefighters help Marlborough Kaikoura Rural Fire Authority boss Richard McNamara is directing Civil Defence operations fighting the huge fire threatening the city of Christchurch. More than 200 firefighters are combating the fires which have damaged about 10 homes in the Port Hills, and the Christchurch City Council and Selwyn District Council have declared a state of emergency.

A fairytale new life Story and photo by Celeste Alexander A Blenheim man’s journey to self improvement is the inspiration behind a book he recently had published. Jason Ross wrote ‘The Fairies of Woodlock Forest’ and of his first run of 100 copies he only has 15 copies left. Word has spread about the book and on Wednesday, Jason was invited to read the book to the children and staff at Little Footsteps Scott Street. The children were ready and waiting with their fairy costumes and faces painted. It was the perfect setting for Jason to read his book as the children have built a fairy garden and bug hotel in the outdoor area, centre manager Karen Gourley says. “Our fairy garden is really popular with the children so when I saw Jason’s book online I thought it would be the perfect setting for him to come and read it,” she says. This is the first book Jason has written and although he says he never planned on doing it, it has been an important part of his ‘healing’ process.
Jason openly shares his struggle with addiction throughout his life. He says he reached a point in his life that he had ‘had enough’ and wanted to change his lifestyle. “I have three sons under the age of five and a loving partner who I didn’t want to let down. “I could see that if I continued our future would not be bright. “So I put myself into rehab and decided to turn my life around,” he says. As part of Jason’s treatment goals he was tasked to write his life story of how he wanted it to be. He wrote it as a fairytale so his children could read it. “When I finished rehab I came out with pieces of scrap paper with this story on it. I showed it to my mum and other people who said they couldn’t believe I had written it. “My partner encouraged me to contact Prisma Print and see if I could get it published.” Once printed, Jason began selling his book via social media and also donated copies to kindergartens and primary schools. “Word of mouth got around and it’s just
blown up from there. I have just had another 50 printed, of which 20 are going to Australia to a friend who paid for them and is going to donate them, and my pen-pal in Texas is also doing the same,” he says. Jason’s biggest fans to date are of course his three sons. “They love it. Even though it’s about fairies the main character is a boy so boys tend to relate well to it. My sons love me reading it to them which was the whole point of writing it... to be able to spend time reading to them when before I wasn’t,” he says. Jason is currently writing the sequel which will be titled ‘The Elves of Woodlock Forest’. “It’s been an amazing journey through sobriety, writing these books and building a sturdy foundation for my family. “All I want is to be a good parent and to make a better life for me and my family,” he says. The Ministry for Primary Industries is holding three more consultation meetings on the Government’s proposal to move six salmon farms in the Marlborough Sounds. The meetings, open to all, are to be at the Waikawa Boat Club in Picton on Monday 20 February, the Portage Hotel on Thursday March 2, and the Waitaria Bay Hall on Friday March 3.
Earthquake claims Marlborough customers made 3646 of the almost 27,000 claims lodged with the Earthquake Commission after the November 14 earthquake. The deadline for making claims for damage caused by the 7.8 magnitude earthquake was last Tuesday.
Bus sponsor wanted The Marlborough District Council is looking for businesses to sponsor the Blenheim Bus Service, which has been dropped by Mitre 10. As part of the sponsorship, the business gets exclusive advertising on the Blenheim Bus, other than any reference to Council or Ritchies, the transport operator. The bus service does a loop around Blenheim suburbs through the central business district.

Banking on a new job
By Cathie Bell Marlborough District Councillor Brian Dawson has been appointed the new head of the Co-operative Bank’s Blenheim branch. He started at the bank on Wednesday and says he is excited by the opportunity.
Brian moved to Blenheim 13 years ago for a job in banking, and is very familiar with the industry. More recently, he and wife Trish have run an education and training company Gist, which Trish continues to operate in Marlborough
and Nelson. The Co-operative Bank, located in Queen Street, is a mutually owned New Zealand bank, which Brian says he is ‘very proud’ to be joining as the bank is owned by Kiwis and returns profits to its members.
New bottling line cranks up By Cathie Bell Marlborough’s newest contract bottling line is up and running. Director Matt Elrick says The Bottling Company ran its first bottles through the machines last week in a testing phase to get everything in place, and it has started bottling wine for customers this week. The first run was a cleanskin bottling for a client keen to empty tanks in preparation for the vintage. “Last week went remarkably smoothly,” Matt says. The bottling line is largely automated, and pumps straight from tankers, which cuts down the risk of damage to the wine, he says. The Bottling Company is doing single shifts at the moment, but is looking at putting on some night shift shortly. “We need to get ready for the pressure of vintage. We want to be there to help.” The main contract bottlers in town is Wineworks, with some wineries still operating their own bottling lines as well. Matt says there is space in the market

for their new entrant. “The industry is not getting any smaller. It has a bright future, we just need to maintain quality.” Director Stefan Newman says The Bottling Company is aiming at the ‘medium-sized’ market, with the ability to do small runs. Their equipment is capable of bottling 7000
bottles an hour, and 75,000 litres of wine a day, and can do any sized bottle from 375ml to magnums. “At this stage, we’ve got a pretty full schedule. We’re certainly looking at some double shifts. “We’re still in the learning phase .. It’s pretty exciting.”

It takes eight staff to keep the park at its best - including one fulltime mowing lawns. This particular bed, near the Parker Street entrance, is regularly planted with designs to celebrate events and anniversaries in the community.

RAPID number essential for fire safety Fire risk is at its highest at this time of the year – a reminder to everyone in rural Marlborough that they should have a RAPID number at their property entrance. A clearly displayed Rural Address Property Identification number may be the difference between life and death; it’s the guide used by emergency services to locate a property. There are obvious safety reasons for your number being clearly visible to emergency services, police, ambulance, fire department and Civil Defence. It also makes it easier when dealing with phone and power companies. RAPID numbers are calculated on the distance between a property
entrance from the beginning of the road on which it is located. Please don’t attempt to do your own calculation or try and create your own RAPID number – this can create problems. Positive Ageing – steps to avoid a fall Falls can cause serious injury for older people – or may be a sign of an underlying health condition. The risk of falling rises steeply with age as balance and vision deteriorate, muscles weaken and blood pressure drops. Older people who are not active or who take a lot of medication are also at risk. Always tell your GP if you fall; a health assessment may reveal an emerging medical condition or it may show medication needs changing, glasses need adjusting or a bit more exercise is needed. Cut down the risk of falling in your own home: Use non-slip mats and install handrails in the bathroom • Use a bath seat and hand-held unit in the shower
• Use night lights if you need to get up at night • Use a mirror that can be pulled toward you for make-up or shaving • Remove or fix floor rugs so they don’t slide or bunch up • Have a light switch in the bedroom which you can reach easily while in bed • Sit down to get dressed and put your shoes on • Don’t have clutter or cords lying about • Wear low-heeled, supportive and secure shoes with rubber soles • Get up slowly after lying down – get your balance before moving • Store often-used items between eye level and hip height so you don’t have to bend or reach to get

Rude cyclist To the cyclist that came speeding down the hill into Momorangi Bay Friday 10th while I was reversing out of the park . I was already out on the road when you decided to scream abuse at me with my 5 year old in the car and 150 kids from a school visiting there. You foul mouthed man, share the road and find some manners, school children have more than you.
Huge gum tree The huge gum tree at the top of Wither Rd is impressive but what a mess it has made of both the street and properties. As owned by council it would be nice if they would come and do a clean up.

Ever driven along Kinross Street and clunked and climbed the train track crossing? Obviously council staff, mayor or MP have no idea of the difficulty for walkers, bikers, in line skaters, wheelchair users, segway riders, truckies, drivers, rocked as they cross the lines. This covers most of us but why with no trains are authorities not fixing it? An election promise; making it part of the cycle way gets instant repair!

Money collecting Marlborough is a farming area so why do we have the environment awards for home grown veges etc....but the council are trying to stop having roosters, bees and other animals banned or limited in town areas? Just more money collecting for the council.

Clean up Taylor river Why does the MDC continue to employ oxygen thieves who dream up further restrictions on residents in order to justify their employment. Possibly stopping a cricket match on a dry lake a prime example or poking their noses into owning a certain type of animal within town limits. Clean the weeds from the Taylor river if you want to do something worthwhile.
Lost Manx cat Hi all, we are searching for our beloved Manx Cat (Bobtail) No tail. He is black and white and long-haired. He has a white chest, paws, stomach and whiskers. He also has one eye smaller than the other. He is also very large. We miss him so much and have been searching daily. It has now been three weeks, if seen please contact me through the SPCA. There is a reward when found.

Menz Shed looking for more work By Cathie Bell The Blenheim Menz Shed members work hard to refurbish bicycles as part of their contribution to the community, and the men are looking for people to hand the restored bikes to as well as more bikes to work on. The Dillons Point Road shed provides a workshop for men
to restore furniture and do woodwork, as well as providing an engineering space for more mechanically-minded members. It’s in that engineering space that a corner has been put aside for bike maintenance, and members like Russell Gent and Colin Smithies work their magic on the bicycles.

Bar & Eatery launched Story and photo by Celeste Alexander The Clubs of Marlborough has given its Taylor’s Restaurant a major overhaul and relaunched it to appeal to the wider community of Marlborough. Now known as the Taylor’s Bar & Eatery, it features a whole new decor, layout and improved facilities. It was launched back in November 2016 and the final touches are due to be finished in two weeks which includes an impressive new lit up entrance way. Inside a stand alone bar has been built that serves premium products exclusive to the Bar & Eatery, that are not offered elsewhere at the Clubs. A fine dining area has been created as well as an area for people wanting to enjoy some casual drinks, tapas and finger foods, and the outside balcony area is now enclosed making it perfect for all weather. Clubs CEO Lee Davis says the rebranding and design was chosen to give their customers a new and different option for
drinks and dining than what is already offered. “We wanted somewhere for people to come in, have a drink and order off a special menu and enjoy the stunning view of the Taylor River. “It’s been designed to accommodate the percentage of our membership that just want a quiet place to enjoy a casual drink and a bite to eat. We want to make sure that we are catering for all of our members and visitors to the clubs,” he says. Some purpose built bar leaners have also been built for people wanting to have a drink outside on the balcony, as well as some inside by the bar for those wanting a drink and tapas. “The Taylor’s Bar & Eatery is a bit more upmarket now but still has a comfortable and casual feel. It’s had really good feedback and we invite our extensive wide and diverse membership, guests and visitors to come in and try it for themselves and we would love to hear back what you think of this brand new bar and eatery experience in Marlborough.”

Youth taking on charity ride By Cathie Bell All going well, three young men raising money for Kaikoura should be back in Marlborough today after cycling 600km in five days. Callum Saunders, Leatham LandonLane, and Nick Blakiston left Blenheim last Monday on a off-road cycling adventure that sees the three former Marlborough Boys’ College cycling go through the Awatere Valley, Hanmer Springs, Rainbow Station, Kaiteriteri and Maungatapu Saddle. The trio will ride 70km to 200km a day for up to 10 hours, with overnight stops at Hanmer Springs, St Arnaud, Kaiteriteri and Nelson. As of yesterday, they had raised $1625 through a givealittle page to go to the Red Cross for those affected by last November’s 7.8 earthquake. The three have dubbed themselves ‘ The Boys of Boxed’, from a cycling term used to describe extreme exhaustion. A support van driven by Nick Blakiston’s father, Joe, is going on the ride. The ride had generated public interest and generous donations and support from Leatham Landon-Lane and Nick Blakiston are businesses, including PGG Wrightson and two of the three “Boys of Boxed” effort. the Marlborough District Council.

Grow your own seeds Raising plants from seeds is a great sense of achievement for most gardeners and when the seeds are ones you collected for free it is even better. It is a learning curve to know what is a wanted plant and an unwanted plant but with a little close observation you can score a lot of free plants by allowing mature plants to seed. If you come across a special fruit or one that is more difficult to get the seed from seed packets then you should certainly save the seed and plant them some time. Recently we found two Asian foods, one type of snake bean and two types of bitter melon. I collected a few seeds from them and with the snake bean just sat the whole bean on a late afternoon windowsill to dry out and mature the seeds. They are now all growing happily in one of my glasshouses. Sometime ago I found Dragon Fruit for sale and now have a big specimen which should be approaching flowering time soon and also a number of baby ones. Collecting seed from fruit you have grown or purchased is just a matter of removing them from the fruit, laying on a bit of paper towel to allow to dry. Once they are dry you can either plant them or store them. The best way to store is to write on the paper towel what they are then place inside a sealed glass jar and then into the fridge where they can wait till you are ready to plant. Several types of seeds can be stored in the same jar. The fridge storage means they will keep very well for a long period of time. The fridge also gives the seeds a false winter so when they come out they will think its spring and germinate better as a result. Spring is normally the best time to bring out seeds you wish to sprout as the daylight hours are extending and many seeds relate to that. Self sown seeds lay dormant until the conditions are ideal for them to sprout,
that means light hours, temperature and moisture levels. Normally this time of the year germinating seeds is not a problem as the soil temperatures are supposed to be over 10 degrees. In a glasshouse where the air temperature is warm, seeds in containers will germinate better as long as adequate moisture is applied to the medium. Before you cover your seeds, spray them with a solution of Magic Botanic Liquid (MBL) at 20 ml per litre of water. A method to germinate in cold soil is to make a trench or a square, about a metre square and about 10cm deep. Cut the lawn and then trample the grass clippings into this prepared area, until it’s about 3cm from the top. Cover with some sieved medium or soil, sprinkle or place your seeds, spray with MBL and then cover, leaving about 1cm below surrounding soil level. This allows water to settle into the area rather than run off. When germinating in trays or cell packs, use a good compost such as Daltons or Oderings as the base, then sieve some of the same mix to make a nice layer of friable smaller particles. Spread your seeds onto this, spray with MBL and cover by sieving more compost. Keeping seeds of your favorite vegetables is very important because seed strains disappear overnight as seed companies replace varieties.

Butterflies’ vineyard home a first
By Cathie Bell Yealands Family Wines’s Seaview vineyard is recognised as New Zealand’s first Butterfly Friendly Organisation by the Moths and Butterflies Trust of New Zealand. Within the vineyard is ‘Butterfly Gully’ which has been planted in over 200 swan plants to attract monarch butterflies. Over the summer months, the gully, which is sunny and well protected from the wind, is aflutter with spectacular orange wings. Swan plants host monarch caterpillars from egg to chrysalis, and the bright wild flowers between the rows of vines provide nectar for the adult butterflies. Further along the gully, stinging nettle has been planted to host the caterpillars of multi-coloured red and yellow admiral butterflies. Head gardener James Morrison has become an enthusiastic lepidopterist or butterfly fan, and has worked closely with the trust to establish the butterfly friendly garden. The Sun wrote about James and Butterfly Gully in March last year. Blenheim people had complained predatory wasps were putting monarch butterflies in short supply, but James posted on social media that they were thriving in Seddon. Founder of Yealands Family Wines Peter Yealands believes strongly in biodiversity and understands the important role butterflies play in nature. “There is something joyous about butterflies that makes our vineyard team smile. And when you learn more about them; their diversity, lifecycle and vulnerability, you can get pretty passionate about helping them survive and flourish.” The Moths and Butterflies of New Zealand Trust certification is awarded once an organisation has met and sustained a defined list of requirements.

Gary says the process is a ‘questionable’ one. Written submissions will be considered by a panel appointed by government, he says. “There is no provision for cross-examination of experts and so the hearing lacks robustness. “Judging by the information provided, there’s very little weight being attached to landscape impacts and acknowledgement of the earlier Supreme Court decision in EDS v King Salmon Ltd. “That decision is binding law and at least three of the six sites proposed should not even have got this far. “This pitches those concerned about the landscape and tourism values of the Sounds against a powerful coalition of interests: a largely foreign-owned company with a vested interest in the outcome together with the Government that makes both the rules and the decisions.” Gary says the society will still submit in opposition to the proposals.

By Cathie Bell The Ministry for Primary Industries has initiated a process to give King Salmon an ‘easy ride’ for approvals for new salmon farms in the protected Outer Marlborough Sounds, says the Environmental Defence Society. The Government is consulting on a proposal to move six salmon farms to high-flow sites in the Sounds. The society took the Environmental Protection Agency approval of four new farms in the Marlborough Sounds to the Supreme Court three years ago, which reduced the expansion to three new farms. EDS chief executive Gary Taylor says the ministry is ‘essentially acting as a coapplicant’ for approvals that will override the Marlborough Council’s plans that prohibit aquaculture development in the Outer Sounds and that protect scenic and landscape values. The process bypasses normal RMA processes, he says. “The Marlborough Council is currently

Local man’s whale shots go global By Cathie Bell Watching stranded whales on the Farewell Spit beaches was an ‘unforgettable experience’, Blenheim man Anthony Phelps says. A stringer for international news agency Reuters, Anthony spent three days taking photographs for newspapers and websites
around the world. A professional photographer for more than 30 years, he says the sights were like nothing he has seen before. The whales were clearly distressed and the noise of them screaming and crying was horrific. But the response of hundreds of volun-

We require an administration assistant and support person to compliment and assist in our busy, fast paced office commencing mid-March, for up to two months during Vintage 2017. Locals band together for mussel festival extravaganza By Celeste Alexander Nine Havelock locals have banded together to form the entertainment group and will be performing at the Havelock Mussel and Seafood Festival on March 18. Hans Nielson and Kim Weatherhead came up with the idea to form ‘Band of Locals’ with the goal of performing at the mussel festival, and have pulled together musicians from teenagers to retirees. “I sat down with Kim and talked about getting a bunch of locals together to play music and we thought how cool would it be if we can peform at the festival. We pitched it to the festival organisers and they were really supportive. “We have quite an active theatre group here and after our last show we held auditions and now have nine members, half of Havelock,” he jokes. Band of Locals has a half hour set allocated at the festival from 1.30-2pm, and depending on time they may also perform later in the day. Hans says they play ‘a bit of everything’ from Adele, the Proclaimers right through to Blink 182. “There’s all sorts in there. We are already attracting plenty of attention during our rehearsals. “People at the pub across from where we practise often go outside to listen, and one lady last week even came in and started dancing. Hopefully this is the reaction we get at the festival,” Hans laughs. The Havelock Mussel and

Steve Sumner - one for the ages All Whites legend Steve Sumner deserves every plaudit he has received since his tragic death last week. The 61-year-old, who captained the All Whites to the World Cup in 1982 and their arduous qualification journey in the 12 months prior to that, died after a highly public battle with prostate cancer. Steve wrote himself into the history of New Zealand football and the hearts and minds of those who saw him play or met him later in life. The boy from Preston came to Christchurch in 1973 only intending to stay two years. Some 44 years later he’s held up as one of New Zealand’s greatest ever players who’s steely determination and unwavering will to compete served him well on and off the field. I was fortunate to know Steve on a personal basis thanks to spend-
ing eight years of my schooling with his son between the ages of five and 13. Granted, I was young, but as a sports mad kid, I realised I was in the presence of someone great when Steve was around. He never spoke out of turn about his footballing exploits but I knew he was a big name. Ironically, I played football with his son in an under-8 school team. He never overplayed his hand, maybe he should have, we were a terrible team which lost every game and only scored two goals all season. Two memories for me stand out the most with Steve. One was when I somehow won a running race at a school athletics day. In celebration I did a two handed gun salute. Somehow Steve had made his way down from the stands to
shake my hand and say “I saw your wee celebration with the two gun salute”. The other was when we had not spoken for a couple of years, and I was studying to become a journalist and I needed someone to profile. I flicked him an email and he replied within a couple of hours and said he’d love to be that person. It typified the man, you had a friend for life with Steve Sumner. When Steve was quizzed on footballing matters his opinions were not given to sensationalise but rather rationalise a contentious issue. You don’t earn FIFA’s highest honour without earning a ton of respect along the way. I’ve learnt just how great Steve was this week. The goals he scored, the team’s he led, the Chatham Cups he lifted. Rest easy, thanks for the memories.

Cricket final Wairau Valley are this season’s Senior Grade T20 Champions following an exciting final on Friday evening at Horton Park. Valley scored 140 batting first led by man of the match Greg Stretch with 64, well supported by Matthew Stretch with 36. Celtic were always in with a chance with Josh Poole top scoring on 39 but some tight bowling and excellent fielding saw them fall 15 runs short, Rikki Bovey and Heath Murphy each taking 3 wickets. In the first round of the Tasman Premier League the Falcons had a comfortable 7 wicket win over the Dolphins, Rikki Bovey leading the way with 6, while Tarin Mason claimed 4 wicket. For the Dophins Josh Poole scored a fine 76.
T20 Cricket Today, Renwick take on Wairau Valley in the 2nd Grade T20 Final at Horton Park starting at 5.15pm. In TPL action both Marlborough sides play in Nelson with Falcons taking on Wanderers and Dolphins playing Stoke Nayland.
Jim Fraser centre to go The earthquake-damaged Jim Fraser Centre at Lansdowne Park will be demolished soon as part of the Marlborough District Council’s major redevelopment of the sports grounds. Four new beach volleyball courts will be built on the site and Marlborough Rugby, along with other Marlborough sports codes, will be accommodated in the new sports hub pavilion being built on the south eastern corner of the park, closer to the Lansdowne Street main entrance.
On the golfing path By Cathie Bell Blenheim man Chas Craig has been accepted into the New Zealand Professional Golf Association’s trainee professional programme and is looking forward to a bright future in the sport. Chas says if he is successful in completing the three year-long programme, he will have the opportunity to be able to play and coach around the world as a fully qualified PGA professional. “It’s pretty awesome.” Golf has been his focus since his father introduced him to the sport at 14, and since then, it’s the only sport he plays, except for maintaining the Craig family involvement in squash. Sister Megan is a New Zealand representative. “I pretty much got so addicted to it I was doing 65 hour weeks during school.” The two sports are quite different, Chas says. Squash is very physical, it ‘clears the mind and you just go nuts on the court’, whereas golf is much more mentally intense. He did three years travelling overseas, and is now working for Jonti Philipson at his Golf Hub business at the Marlborough Golf Club, which helps him keep up his golf ability. During the trainee professional course, Chas needs to maintain his play to a low handicap, learn clubs repair, do a business course, study sports psychology and golf biomechanics.
