Story and photo by Cathie Bell It was three times the celebration at Cloudy Bay Wines this week as three staff celebrated their 50th birthdays together. Continued on page 2 Leah Skipper, Marcus Osborne, and Louise Crawford all share February 20 1967 as their birthday, and the three reckon there are not that many workplaces where three staff in one section would share a birthday like they do.

TWICE WEEKLY

Cloudy Bay’s ‘triplets’ celebrate their 50th Continued from page 1 Leah, Marcus, and Louise all work in the production section at Cloudy Bay Wines, in a team of 15 people. The three of them share the same birthday and are the same age, which they think is probably fairly unusual. They are all from different countries – Louise from England, Marcus from Scotland, and Leah from New Zealand – and have ended up in the same work place, in the same team. Leah started at Cloudy Bay Wines first, nearly 12 years ago. Marcus joined 10 years ago, and Louise joined six years ago.

This is the sixth year the three have celebrated their birthdays together. Louise supplied three cakes, decorated in three different ways, each amazing. “We get a great morning tea each year,” she says. Cloudy Bay Wines estate director Yang Shen says the people at Cloudy Bay Wines are ‘like a family’ and it is great to celebrate. “Yes, we are a business, but a family as well. Keeping the value of people is very important.” It’s not just about their technical ability, but the human and emotional side of life as well, he says.

Marcus Osborne, Louise Crawford, and Leah Skipper cut up the cakes for their shared 50th birthday.

Road accident trauma for students By Cathie Bell Families in Marlborough are in shock and grieving after a road accident on Sunday afternoon involving eight young people. Police senior sergeant Clare Robertson confirmed one young woman has died. She was Lara Jayne Glover, 16, of Blenheim. Marlborough Boys’ and Marlborough Girls’ Colleges confirmed other young people have been injured, including two students from each college. The colleges are providing support for upset students and families, including providing private space at the schools for grieving students. “At this time, our focus and thoughts are with the families and friends of those affected.” Police say the accident, on State Highway One between the Vickerman Street intersection and the Spring Creek intersection, happened about 4.30pm on Sunday afternoon. The highway was closed that afternoon, and again on Monday for investigation, with traffic being diverted down Murrays Road and Rapaura Road. Serious Crash Unit is investigating and no further information is available at this time, police say. A roadside tribute has been erected.

Music award Marlborough Girls’ College Year 12 student Libby Holdaway has won this year’s Queen Elizabeth II Music Award, with an impressive record of musical accomplishment. She was the College’s outstanding music student last year as well as its most promising jazz instrumentalist. Last year she passed her Grade 8 Piano with distinction, Grade 6 Theory and Grade 5 Violin exam while also playing for the school productions and in the college jazz band. Libby was nominated for the award by music teacher Marios Sophocleous who described her as by far the best young musician in Blenheim.

Ron and Pauline Perano on their wedding day. Photo provided.

Story and photo by Celeste Alexander Ron and Pauline Perano have reached a significant milestone in their marriage, their 60th wedding anniversary. The couple say they celebrated ‘quietly’ on February 16 by going out for dinner and reminiscing on life together. When asked how they first met, Pauline laughs and says it’s a funny story. “My late sister married one of Ron’s relations and one spring I went along with them whitebaiting. “I was looking at photographs from their wedding and spotted Ron and thought he was gorgeous. “His mother said he was working on the historic scow Echo at the time and I said ‘maybe he can bring me some whitebait one day’. “Well it was the best thing I said because he did! “I had forgotten about it and went back home to Wellington and he brought a glass milk bottle full of whitebait to me to surprise me,” she grins. For Ron it was love at first sight. “She wasn’t a bad bit of goods,” he jokes. Ron and Pauline courted for 18 months before marrying on February 16, 1957. The morning after their wedding was spent at the Wellington Zoo while waiting for flights to Blenheim, then they travelled in a caravan to Queenstown and Wanaka for two and a half weeks. They returned to Blenheim where they settled and went on to have three

Ute warning Police are urging people to keep an eye out for a stolen Nissan Navara Ute taken from Riverlands, Blenheim on February 12, which they believe is being used for further offending in the rural areas of Marlborough. If you see it ring Police immediately to let them know where it is. It had a number plate of “Me4FUN”, this has most likely changed now. There are many similar Utes to this one around - The stolen one has a flat deck with drop sides and black bull bars (not unique).

Lotto win A second division Lotto ticket winning $24,510 in last weekend’s draw was sold at the New World Blenheim. Lotto advises anyone who bought their ticket from the winning stores should write their name on the back of the ticket and check it immediately at any Lotto outlet.

children, Steven (Christchurch), Gail (Blenheim) and Paul (Wellington) and also two grandchildren. Looking back, Pauline says the key to their happiness has been ‘fighting and making up’. “It’s normal to have argu-

ments. “Just have the fight and make up... it’s what keeps it spicy,” she laughs. “We also did our own things. I went overseas on cruises with families and Ron has done his own thing with his boat

building, his book and going to England for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee with his boat the Swiftsure. “You have got to let each other do what they want otherwise a person can have regrets and resentment,” she says.

Wet but fun at gala The children were not fased however, relishing the wet and sliding around in the water while the adults stood under marquees listening to the live music. Inside and around the church there were stalls and demonstrations. The weekend’s wet weather forced other events to postpone including the More FM Beach Dig and Marlborough 4 Fun Summer Concert which will be held next Sunday at White’s Bay.

St Andrew’s offers a supportive, state-of-the-art environment In addition to a top quality education, boarders at St Andrew’s College in Christchurch enjoy the comfort of state-of-the-art facilities and a strong boarding culture, where they are encouraged to reach their full potential in everything they do, in and out of the classroom, Director of Boarding, Dianne MacDonald says. “We work very closely with the day school to ensure students strive for individual excellence in their studies, and also encourage them to participate fully in boarding life, especially when it comes to the many fun events offered as part of our activities programme.”

With support from the ‘valued and wonderful’ team of boarding house staff including house managers, assistant house managers (matrons) and tutors, students at St Andrew’s are encouraged to look after and respect each other, make responsible choices, show kindness, honesty and courage, she says. “We also value our boarders’ and extended families who are always welcome to visit and join us for meals in the dining room.” For more information or to register your interest for 2018 please contact Registrar Lynn Smith on enrol@stac.school.nz or phone 03 940 2016. and shops is a huge draw card for us all. Sadly this year we were so disappointed to arrive and see a few markets (not the originals) scattered in two points, no atmosphere, and no reason to wander down the main street. There has been talk we should change destinations and head to another festival, as the festival weekend no longer had the atmosphere of celebration. On a positive note the girls left the town with money in their pockets as their favourite stalls were nowhere to be seen. Many of us did not even leave the square and wander down the street, for the first time in 20 years I reflected that I did not go into the chemist to explore all their goodies in the sale bins. I could get each and every girl to write a letter to the editor and their message would be BRING BACK THE FRIDAY MARKETS OF THE FESTIVAL why change something that was such a drawcard

to those travelling into Blenheim for the Festival. Years gone by it was known as Blenheim Festival Weekend, I think those who decided to change something that was so fantastic should take a serious look at their decision. On the bright note the Sunday was a fabulous day and the girls spent their money that they didn’t spend at the markets, so thank you Bladen, No.1, Geisens, Gourmet Collection, Wither Hills, and Woodbourne Tavern, you did a fabulous job welcoming the Girls on Tour. You’re welcome to contact each and every Girl on Tour who travelled as they would simply all send the same message; BRING BACK THE FRIDAY MARKETS FOR THE WINE AND FOOD FESTIVAL. Letters to the editor

Missed the market Dear Ed, This year was Girls on Tour 25th anniversary travelling to Blenheim for the Blenheim Wine & Food Festival. Up to 30 ladies meet once a year to make the journey and celebrate true friendship. Travelling as movie stars, and many not knowing each other’s real identity this is a once a year time for us all just to be girls and have fun together. This year things changed and the journey was a lot longer as we could no longer travel by train due to the earthquakes, travelling by coach through the centre of the south island was a very long trip. About 18 years ago we changed the travel day to Blenheim from Friday to the Thursday. This change was made so we could enjoy the fantastic Street Markets on the Friday before the festival. We save weekly for our trip and the anticipation of heading to the market to listen to the music, wonder the main street browsing the markets

Snail Mail

Dear Ed, Recently a letter posted in Picton was delivered to my PO Box in Blenheim three days later. Now the travel time by vehicle Picton to Blenheim is say 30 minutes or less. That half hour relative to say two days (48 hours) means my letter could’ve been delivered 100 times. NZ Post have given a new meaning to the term ‘snail mail’. I presume the letter posted in Picton went to Christchurch under NZ Post’s weird logic of speed, then back to Blenheim? However NZ Post is a State Owned Enterprise where profit comes before service to the public. It also underlines what a disaster it has been to turn public service operations into SOEs.

real concerns about trout and salmon potentially being caught in the set net. I have not seen Fish and Game anywhere except asking kahawai fishermen for their trout licence. Eh? Kahawai Ken Blenheim

No wonder mail business for NZ Post has fallen. Julius Sneezer Blenheim Response: Our target is to deliver at least 95% of standard mail within three working days of it being posted (we assume your correspondent is referring to standard mail). We moved to this standard because the volume of letters being posted has halved over the last decade. Every week that goes by, 1 million fewer letters are posted and we have to redesign how we deliver because we can’t afford to have nearly-empty vans driving around. Children and caregivers celebrate the new space at the Redwoodtown Plunket rooms.

New space a cultural home By Cathie Bell The extension to the Plunket rooms in Redwoodtown is a wonderful space for Pasifika groups to use for early childhood education, the Samoan and Tongan groups using it say. Plunket agreed to extend the Bythell Street venue last year, and the work has just been finished, co-ordinated between Plunket, REAP, and the Education Ministry. The new Pasifika playgroup room is being

officially opened on Sunday by Marlborough mayor John Leggett at 11am. Tongan playgroup co-ordinator Aiona Kula says the new venue is ‘finally’ a place for the Pasifika people to feel at home. “It is a place for our people in Blenheim.” Samoan playgroup spokeswoman Filifilia Puni says the playgroup enables children to maintain their language, culture, and values. “That is very important.” Both the Samoan and Tongan playgroups

have about seven children attending sessions, and they are keen to have more families join in, as well as seeing other Pasifika groups hold playgroups in their own languages. Aiona says other people are welcome to come and use the rooms as well, saying Tokelau, Vanuatu, Fiji, and Tuvalu groups could be set up. “We’re not limited to just Tongan or Samoan, we’re about the Pasifika community coming together and having fun together.”

By Glenise Dreaver The Picton Dawn Chorus’s predator control project could put Picton on the map worldwide, the more than 100 people at Monday evening’s meeting at Endeavour Park pavilion have been told. “You could be the first predator-free town in the world,” said guest speaker Kelvin Hastie of the Crofton Downs Predator-Free Community project, adding that Wellington is on the way to being the first predator-free city. Trapping and destroying predators is the key to re-establishing native bird life he said, though it has to be done with training, using techniques and traps which protect children and pets. He told the audience that many years of hard work on Kaipupu Point had already made Picton a trail blazer. Now the work is being extended to a wide spread of urban areas around the town’s reserves, rather than just in them. Statistics from urban trapping in Wellington showed a massive decrease in the monthly numbers of rats, mice, weasels and possums trapped and an increase in native bird numbers, he said. An unexpected bonus has been a much more connected community, having also reached out into schools and surrounding areas very successfully. “It has to be community-led or it won’t happen.” Picton event organiser Siobain Browning called for more local volunteers for this stage, which is supported by a $5000 grant from KiwiBank. Those wishing to find out more about the scheme, including obtaining traps, can go to http://www.pictondawnchorus.nz, or the Kaipupu Point store in Mariners Mall.

Story and photo by Celeste Alexander Sheryl Ruffell began her working career as an early childhood teacher but it wasn’t until she invested in a rental property that the idea to pursue real estate was sparked. “The agent I was dealing with suggested that I sell real estate and encouraged me to take the first step. “I’m so glad I did,” she says. Fourteen years have since passed and Sheryl knows she made the right decision. “All the people you meet and the different houses you get to see is what makes my job so interesting and enjoyable. “Particularly that feeling when you have put in 100 per cent and the client is happy, I get so much satisfaction,” she says. Sheryl first began as a real estate sales consultant for L.J Hooker in 2002 and after three years made the move to Summit Real Estate. Summit had approached Sheryl and invited her to join the team, bringing with her not only knowledge and experience in sales but also marketing. “Summit has a lot to offer. It’s a very generous company and great to work for. “The Marlborough team is much like a family and there’s a very strong connection between all of our agents,” she says. Supporting Sheryl is her daughter Rowena

Tindall who works as her personal assistant. “Rowena is lovely and reliable. “We have a very unique relationship being family and it works really well,” Sheryl says. Asked how she measured success Sheryl replies; “Repeat business and happy clients”. “When you’ve helped a client or family into a home and spent a lot of time getting them a good deal, more often than not they come back. “It’s then that I know they were truly happy with the service I provided and I continue to work for them to the absolute best of my ability. “With many people I am helping them out of a situation so I make sure that I give 100 per cent,” she says. Sheryl specialises in the wider Marlborough region, from Ward through to Rai Valley. Sheryl is now selling lifestyle blocks as well, and is looking for more to sell. If you are serious about selling and want a sold sign on your home then please give her a call. She prides herself in getting results and is committed to all vendors past and present to do her very best to get results because for her ‘Results Do Matter’. Honesty, hard work and a good listening ear are all part of the package you get when choosing Sheryl to get the job done.

BUILDING your future

CASE STUDY

“We have more PV grid tie installations in Marlborough

Christchurch thanResidence all the other opposition combined.

This includes one of the largest systems in New Zealand”.

Energy efficiency is a key consideration for any home owner. This was no different for a Christchurch family setting out to build a 345m² home featuring the latest in Mitsubishi Electric heating and air conditioning. As a stay-at-home family they

needed a solution which would ensure their energy usage was kept to a minimum across the entire day.

“We are local, why would by the solar panels is supplied to an inverter, which converts it into power suitable you go anywhere else!” for domestic use. This power is automatically directed to the household for use, The family installed fourteen Mitsubishi Black Diamond Solar Panels, allowing a

maximum system output of 3.64kWp. As an ‘on-grid’ system, the energy captured

and any surplus power is then exported to the grid and credited against the family’s electricity bill. The family chose an Enasolar 3kW Grid-Tied Inverter due to travel commitments. With built-in Wi-Fi as standard, they can access their Mitsubishi Black Diamond Solar array from anywhere worldwide. The inverter also has a simple to use monitoring program to track generation. To help fund their dream home the family chose to switch their home mortgage to Kiwibank, and as such qualified for the Sustainable Energy Loan. This saw

Within a year the family have already experienced savings which far exceed their

initial expectations:

• The total savings over the first year totalled $1,126.07.

• Almost 5 megawatts of power was produced (4993kWh)! • 51.2% of power generated was self-consumed at time of generation. • The payback rate is estimated to be just over 7 years, and future increases in electricity prices will see this reduced further!

When you consider the rising power prices why wouldn’t you consider solar energy? Blenheim is home to one of the country’s specialist solar energy companies, Solar Synergy. How does it work? It’s simple, Solar Synergy is one of New Zealand’s specialist importers, suppliers and installers of photo voltaic (PV) solar panels which are generally mounted on a roof to produce electricity. The light from the sun is absorbed by semi conductors in the panels which excite the electrons and in turn, produces an amount of direct current which is converted into alternating current through an inverter for use in your home or business. The benefit of this is that because you are connected to the Marlborough Lines network, any excess not used can be sold back to the grid, and if not enough is produced, the system buys the difference in. One of the well known brands that Solar Synergy supplies is Mitsubishi Electric. Mitsubishi Electric has designed its Black Diamond Dolar Panels to suit New Zealand’s rugged environment by coating them with

two layers of high quality anti-corrosion material. This means their panels can be safely installed in coastal areas without harm. The time for solar is now. As power prices continue to track upwards and the initial upfront cost of solar is steadily decreasing, installing Solar PV will make an immediate and noticeable impact on your monthly power bill. It takes an average of only seven to ten years to make back upfront costs with electricity savings. By slightly altering energy usage habits, for example by setting appliances to run during daytime hours, the payback period can decrease even further. With an impressive output warranty of 25 years, installing a solar array is truly an investment in your future and can even enhance the resale value of your home. With 40 years of manufacturing experience and innovation, Mitsubishi Black Diamond Solar Panels give you peace of mind you are investing in one of the most reliable, high quality systems engineered to stand the test of time. By Cathie Bell The ninth annual Interislander Optimist and Port Marlborough Starling regatta was a great success, despite bad weather early on, organisers say. Last weekend, the Picton waters were the race course for 114 Open Fleet Optimist sailors, a 38 strong Starling fleet and 50 Optimists in the Green and Rainbow fleet, Queen Charlotte Yacht Club spokeswoman Christel Hopkins says. The Rainbows and Greens sailed in front of the QCYC while the Open and Starling fleet sailed in the outer Harbour, she says. “As in previous years the majority of sailors travelled from the North Island to our little town of Picton and all top sailors were represented. “It was good to see over 20 QCYC sailors amongst the fleets. This is definitely a few more than previous years.” Because of forecast bad weather, club members turned the RIB boatshed into a bar/kitchen and beach side café to keep sailors and visitors out of the pouring rain, Christel says. This provided shelter during day one’s torrential rain and the wind on day two. Conditions made difficult sailing until day

three’s ‘real scorcher’, she says. “It was definitely a great day on the water to close off this regatta.” Results Seb Menzies (MBSC) placed first showing his form this season. George Lee Rush from Wakatere placed 2nd and David Buchanan of Charteris Bay third. Suede Cowley was the highest ranking of the QCYC sailors placing 16th, followed by Harry Edwards 29th. In the Silver fleet Loui Poletti placed 14th and second in his age group 11 years. Moss Hopkins also got a 2nd in his age group 10 years and under. The battle between the Islands was again won by the North Island. Seb Menzies from Murrays Bay had the honours to take the Interislander trophy home. The Green fleet was won by Sean Kensington from KYC. With Mathew Hall and Finn Stichbury placing eighth and ninth of 38 sailors. Luke Cashmere (Wakatere) and Oliver Cowley (QCYC) ended with the same points in the Starling Fleet by Luke taking first place on count back and Oliver 2nd. Emily Overend from QCYC placed 8th.

RODEO

FAMILYDAY L A V I T S FE

MACHINERY BLIND CREEK RD

The rodeo is coming to town By Celeste Alexander Hold on to your hats because the rodeo is coming to town. The Tuamarina Rodeo and Vintage Machinery Field Day will kick off this Sunday with an exciting line up of entertainment, food and amusements for the whole family to enjoy. The rodeo will be held on a property at Thomas Road, Tuamarina which will be sign posted. What is unique about this event is that it holds the proud tradition of being one of New Zealand’s longest running rodeos, and donates thousands every year to the community, spokesperson Jacinta Sheridan says. “All our members are volunteers and give up a lot of their time throughout the year to keep this

rodeo going and so well organised, and we would like to keep that going with the support of our local

community. “Proceeds from the rodeo we donate to Tua Marina School and

the Tuamarina Residents Association as well as other organisations. “The more people that come on the day means more money we can put back into our local community, so come along and enjoy a fantastic day out with the family,” she says. There will be a vintage machinery display for people to wander around and look at, and food tents will be available throughout the day, including one held by the Tua Marina School. For the adults there will be a bar on site so no BYO. For the kids there will be a number of amusements set up and of course the popular children’s dress up competition at lunchtime. Also at lunchtime a dog trials demonstration will be held so find a place to sit, bring along a chair

and picnic blanket if you wish, and prepare to entertained. If watching the action is not enough and you want to experience the thrill of rodeo riding for yourself, day licenses are available for the bull and bronc riding. Simply arrive with your boots and hat around 10.30am and make your way to the secretary’s caravan to register and pay the required fee. Children can also enter some of the junior events. Eftpos will be available on the day so get the whole family along to the Tuamarina Rodeo and Vintage Machinery Field Day. Entry costs $5 for kids, $10 for adults and $25 for a family pass (two adults and three kids), and kids under five-years enter for free.

Bull and bronc riders set for Sunday By Celeste Alexander So far around 15 bull riders have registered to ride in the Tuamarina Rodeo this Sunday and more are expected to enter between now and then. These riders are preparing to go toe-to-hoof with the bulls during the annual rodeo in what has been described as being the prime feature of the event. Holding onto only a braided rope looped around the bull’s girth and held tight by the rider’s hand, the contestant tries to stay aboard the bull. Bull riding requires exceptional balance, upper body strength and strong legs and is a pure adrenaline rush for the riders.

Not to be outdone in the popularity stakes, the bronc riders are also promising to put on a good show for the crowd and registrations are still coming in for this event. This is the ‘classic’ event of the rodeo where style, grace and rhythm define Saddle Bronc riding. The rider utilises the bronc rein attached to the horses halter to help maintain his seat and balance. Other events on the rodeo’s schedule include the Under 45kg Calf Ride, Junior Steer Ride, Steer/Bull Ride, Saddle Bronc, Bareback Sweepstake, Barrel Race and the Bull Ride. Gates open from 10am and Bull riding action from last year. SpeedNut Photography. the rodeo starts at 11am.

Golf’s Eagles to meet By Cathie Bell The Eagles Golfing Society’s annual conference is returning to Marlborough this weekend, 30 years since it was last here but with many of the same people still involved. About 350 people from 15 districts all over New Zealand are attending the conference which runs from Sunday until March 1, and there will be golf on four different courses

during the event. Eagles Golfing Society membership is invitation-only, and former Nelson-Marlborough president John Anderson says it was ‘a great honour’ when he was asked to join in 1979. It started in 1956 in Auckland when 20 men banded together to boost junior golf, and over time, it has evolved to support disabled sport, this year raising more than $151,000 for the

Fishing competition this weekend By Celeste Alexander It’s that time of year when families grab their rods and tackleboxes, fuel up the boat and head out for some fishing as part of the Renwick Arms Country Club Fishin’ Competition. This year’s competition takes place this weekend, kicking off on Friday and finishing with the weigh in event on Sunday.
