Salmon factor Plant set to be a new attraction

By Cathie Bell A new processing plant in Picton could become a tourist attraction, NZ King Salmon hopes. Chief executive Grant Rosewarne says the company wants to model it on a Portland, Oregon building, which has a giant salmon ‘jumping’ its way through a corner of the building. Continued on page 2 NZ King Salmon aquaculture office manager Joanna Davis at the company’s office in Picton, with a picture of the Portland building with a salmon ‘jumping’ through it.

Water won’t hold back Picton salmon plans: company Continued from page 1 NZ King Salmon has grand plans to expand its operations in Marlborough, and the first is to move its primary processing from Nelson to Picton, with that to be up and running by March next year. The company won water space for three extra farms after a long Environmental Protection Agency process that was challenged in the Supreme Court, and two of those farms have started harvesting. First half year results announced last week had the company making a net profit after tax of $8.7 million, up 52% on the comparable six month period to 31 December 2015. The Ministry for Primary Industries is consulting with the public on a proposal to move six farms to higher flow sites in the Marlborough Sounds and submissions are open another three weeks. There are six sites that could move in the proposal, one in Tory Channel and five in the outer Pelorus Sound - with

the overall surface hectares remaining the same. Grant says NZ King Salmon is serious about its proposal to move primary processing to Picton based on logistics savings. Those plans are not affected by the shortage of fresh water in the town, he says. “People think we can’t move the factory there because of the lack of water, but that’s not so. There is technology now, which is in use around the world, that we can use in Picton. “There doesn’t need to be fresh water – there are plants in other countries that take in sea water, purify it, use it, filter it and then put it back cleaner than when they took it. “I was recently in a processing plant in Chile that doesn’t use any fresh water, apart from that drunk by its workers in the staff café. “That technology is out there.” NZ King Salmon would like to build a new building on port land closer to where the fish are landed that could

Grand plans

become a tourist attraction, Grant says. It would have distinctive architecture that would encourage people to look at it, and he uses the ‘jumping salmon’ building in Portland, Oregon, as an example where a giant salmon is leaping through a corner of a building. As well as housing the company’s office and processing, he wants it to include a ‘salmon and sauvignon blanc’ tasting area where cruise ship passengers and other visitors could try before moving on to Picton and the rest of the district. “Our long-term vision includes a floating restaurant,” Grant says. “We have pretty grand plans.” • People have until 5pm on Monday March 27 to make their views known to the Government. Written comments can be emailed to aquaculture. submissions@mpi.govt.nz or posted to Salmon Farm Relocation, Ministry for Primary Industries, Private Bag 14, Port Nelson 7042. More information is available at www.mpi.govt.nz/ news-and-resources/consultations.

NZ King Salmon’s salmon food, fertiliser, and burley plant, planned for the next two to three years, could be in Picton, Havelock, or the Rai Valley.

NZ King Salmon’s salmon and sav blanc tasting area, planned for the Picton wharf area, in the next three to five years.

Company’s key points No extra water space The proposal to relocate farms will not result in any increase in surface hectares for King Salmon’s farming. With only 17 surface hectares available to King Salmon, the company’s preference is to farm to world’s Best Practice Guidelines on higher flow sites. Restoration of Old Farm Sites Most of the Marlborough Sounds is soft fine sediment not dissimilar to what you see around Havelock. Lower flow farm sites were essentially a fairly common smelly mud flat before we started farming them, admittedly they are a smellier mud flat while we are there, and they will revert to an ordinary smelly mud flat after we go. Within a couple of years a lower flow site will look very similar to what it was before and within

10 years it will be back to its normal functional state. Higher flow farm sites, which will be farmed to Best Practice Guidelines, are impacted to a far lesser degree and revert to their normal state far more quickly. Pollution and dilution Farming salmon is completely different to terrestrial farming, for example, the water from a salmon farm can be safely drunk were it not for the salt. A sustainable salmon industry is fully assimilative, that is, the natural processes which break down fish organic matter are fully functioning and sustainable. MPI’s proposal to relocate lower flow salmon farms is conditional on improved environmental outcomes at high flow sites. Toxic algae Algae blooms, including toxic

ones, are natural events and there are records of both the Romans and early Iwi experiencing toxic algal blooms. King Salmon has operated successfully in the Marlborough Sounds without there ever being a serious suggestion of having contributed towards a toxic algae bloom. Offshore salmon farming King Salmon has thoroughly reviewed the possibility of offshore farming, and while we think this will be achievable in about 10 years’ time, there is not currently a single commercial operation in a true exposed offshore position which has proven itself. Iwi settlement Although no additional surface hectares are being created, if the proposal goes ahead, it will generate a settlement obligation in favour of iwi.

NZ King Salmon’s Picton wharf building, with the office, processing plant, salmon and sav blanc tasting area, planned for the next three to five years.

NZ King Salmon’s pet food and nutriceutical plant, planned for the next five to 10 years, could be in a Blenheim industrial park.

Track landowner gets Government award

By Cathie Bell Marlborough Sounds landowner Rod Eatwell was honoured at a ceremony at Parliament in Wellington last night, in recognition of his work enhancing public access on the Queen Charlotte Track. Rod is one of six ‘champions of public access’ recognised for their achievements in enhancing public access and offering new opportunities for New Zealanders to experience our great outdoors by the New Zealand Walking Access Commission. He and the others were presented with awards at a parliamentary ceremony hosted by Associate Minister for Primary Industries Louise Upston. The awards are an annual event organised by the New Zealand Walking Access Commission, and Commission chief executive Eric Pyle says the award winners’ efforts are representative of a growing grassroots movement developing trails and facilitating public access across our country. “Thousands of New Zealanders have taken part in activities over the past year to help improve public access to our outdoors,” he says. “These six deserve particular recognition for their achievements.” The 2017 Walking Access Champion award winners are: • Rod Eatwell, the largest private landowner on the Queen Charlotte Track, who at age 88 still maintains the track and has extended it to a lookout on his land; • Robert ‘Mutt’ Lange, who gifted 53,000 hectares in Central Otago, and Russell Hamilton, his local manager, who is creating a track network for public use; • Duane Major and Adam Gard’ner, who led the public campaign that saw more than 40,000 people donate to buy a beach in Awaroa Inlet and add it to Abel Tasman National Park; • Te Araroa National Trust, a volunteer group that established the Paekakariki-Pukerua Bay escarpment track, which will be walked by more than 60,000 people in its first year; • Nelson Tasman Cycle Trails Trust, who are building trails for cyclists around their region,

including working on a 175km Great Taste Trail loop track; and • Whareroa Guardians Community Trust, who have worked tirelessly since 2007 to build tracks, plant natives and trap predators in a farm reserve on the Kapiti Coast. Eric says the commission hopes these awards serve to inspire all New Zealanders about what is possible when we work together to make the best of our special and wild places. The commission’s citation with the award says that in the early 1980s, when opening up tramping tracks was popular, the Commissioner of Crown Lands proposed the idea of a track along the Kenepuru Ridge to landowner Rod. “Rod was right behind the project. With his slasher, wheelbarrow and shovel he opened a

ridge section on his land. “Inspired by Rod’s efforts, other landowners joined in. In 1991 when the ‘joined up’ Queen Charlotte Track was officially opened, Rod was there to cut the cake.” He has created a path up to Eatwell’s Lookout off the main track that provides unparalleled 360deg views across the Marlborough Sounds and his handmade series of quirky signs add something special to each track visitor’s experience, the citation says. His own words show why he is a more than worthy Walking Access Champion: “If people do something for people that they love and enjoy, and if I can keep the minds of young people wholesome and loving the outdoors, that’s an embellishment for society”.

Trains start running tomorrow and people need to stay off the tracks, KiwiRail warns. Maintenance trains and other rail vehicles start running on the Main North Line between Picton and Christchurch on Thursday, and people need to expect trains in both directions, group general manager network services Todd Moyle says. The first work train is scheduled to run on Thursday from Blenheim south to Mirza. They will be moving further south after that.

St Mary’s School principal Paddy Dowling and the school’s famous chocolate wheel that will be coming out of storage for this weekend’s gala.

All the fun of the fair By Cathie Bell Saturday will be St Mary’s School gala, and once again, the famous chocolate wheel will be in action. It will be the thirteenth year in a row that parent Blair McLean has been in charge of what he calls ‘the Southern Hemisphere’s biggest and best’ chocolate wheel, and he anticipates it will dish out about 700 prizes in four hours with the gala opening at 10am and running until 2pm at the school on Stephenson Street. This Saturday’s gala is Blair’s last year in charge of the chocolate wheel, and he’ll be handing over to Ross Frater.

Ross will be the sixth parent to be running the wheel, in a line that stretches back from Blair, who took over from Andrew Bishell, who took over from Nick Murphy, who took over from Mr Cook, and before him, Bernard Vavasour. “We’ve built it up to a fairly good wheel that gives away about 700 prizes in four hours.” Principal Paddy Dowling took over at St Mary’s at the beginning of the year and is excited about his first gala as principal. “It’s such a large event for this school community, the gala committee put in such an effort, and the support the school gets is fantastic.”

Joy Ministry’s 10 years Joy Ministry, a special service for people with disabilities, celebrates 10 years this month. Each month, about 25 people attend a half hour-long service at St Andrew’s Church in Blenheim, and they stay on for a meal afterwards, organiser David Clode says. Many come from the IDEA family homes as well as a group from Koromiko, and some have been coming for the full 10 years, he says. The ministry is welcoming anyone with a disability to attend, and David says they would be especially grateful for a pianist or people who could play other instruments to join them. St Andrew’s interim minister Derek Harding says the Joy Ministry is a ‘brilliant concept’. “It’s doing really well, lasting this long. 10 years is quite a time.”

Brodie Cattermole (12) of Renwick has been selected to receive a rally starter kit by a foundation headed by Hayden Paddon. Photo by Rebecca Maling.

Brodie rewarded for rally ‘passion’ By Celeste Alexander Renwick boy Brodie Cattermole has been keeping a secret for the past month that he can now share. A youth member of the Marlborough Car Club, he has been selected to receive racing gear from the Paddon Rally Foundation. Established by star Kiwi rally driver Hayden Paddon last year, the Foundation aims to assist New Zealand rallying at all levels over many years. Brodie, with the help of father Steve Cattermole who is a local rally driver with the Marlborough Car Club, wrote his own application for a ‘starter kit’ which includes new racing gear and mentoring. “The overalls he currently wears acutally belonged to the late Chris Amon who passed away last year and he’s starting to outgrow them, so this way he’s getting all new gear,” Steve says. Brodie runs a Nissan Sentra SR which he races in Motorkhana and Autocross events locally and is showing a lot of ‘enthusiasm for rally’, Steve says. “We applied for Brodie because he’s really passionate and into the sport and we felt he

was a valid candidate, so when we found out he was successful it was great news. He thinks it’s pretty cool,” Steve says. When applications for the first round of funding and product support opened in November last year, competitors were quick to respond with over 80 applicants by the 30 January deadline. Just over $30,000 worth of cash, fuel vouchers thanks to Z Energy, race gear from Chicane Racewear and rally entries from the Marathon Car Club and the Eastern Southland Car Club were allocated to 26 successful applicants who ranged from Brodie, aged 12, to 58-year-old Michelle Harris, a member of the Eastern Southland Car Club. Paddon says the vision of the foundation is to encourage new competitors and generally grow the sport of rallying in New Zealand from grassroots level to international level. “The Foundation is more than just the financial support; each successful applicant also has access to us and the board for advice and help.” One of the Foundation members is longtime Paddon co-driver and Blenheim man John Kennard.

Anna Small, health promoter for the Cancer Society Marlborough, holds one of the Candle of Hope ceremony bags that can be purchased ahead of the Relay for Life this Saturday.

Light a candle in memory By Celeste Alexander Wanting to remember someone who has passed away or celebrate someone fighting cancer? The Cancer Society Marlborough office is selling Candle Bags of Hope that will play an important role at this weekend’s Relay for Life event. A special Candle of Hope Ceremony will be held around 9:45pm on Saturday evening as part of the relay, where all the candle bags purchased and decorated by the community will be displayed. Each bag has sand and a candle placed in it and arranged in a formation by relay volunteers, then individually lit to create a spectacular remembrance display. Anna Small, health promoter for Cancer Society Marlborough, says the candle bags can be purchased before Friday for only five

dollars each. “Take them home, write messages on them or get your children to decorate them and bring them back to us before the end of Friday. “Alternatively you can’t get them to us before then bring them along to the Relay for Life before 7pm so our wonderful volunteers can prepare them for the ceremony,” she says. There will also be a candle bag decorating event on the day of the relay, simply purchase a bag and decorate it onsite. “It’s a lovely ceremony where you can remember a loved one or celebrate someone’s battle with cancer,” Anna says. The candle bags are available for purchase at the Cancer Society Marlborough office in Blenheim.

The Lemongrass’s menu is focused on fresh, lean and green and features some additions many people may not have

tried yet. This includes serving dishes with red rice, a more natural form of rice that is packed with more nutrients. There are also several Vietnamese dishes designed by Nuttavut including one his mother taught him - Steamed Fish with Kaffir Lime Leaf and Tamarind Curry. “We love Vietnamese food, it’s very popular in Thailand and we are confident the locals will enjoy it too,” they say. “Each table will also receive a bowl of fresh herbs and vegetables that can be eaten along with the dishes. “Many people are becoming more health conscious .” The Lemongrass is open seven days for lunch and dinner, for dine in or takeaway.

Cloudy Bay Wines estate director Yang Shen

Aiming for the top in wine Cloudy Bay Wines has an important role in Marlborough. New estate director, Yang Shen talks with Cathie Bell about his goals for the winery.

Cloudy Bay Wines is one of Marlborough’s older wineries, and probably New Zealand’s bestknown wine brand internationally, with its sauvignon blanc helping blaze the way for the variety in Britain and the United States. New estate director Yang Shen has taken over and six weeks into the new job, he is still delighted to be in the role. Originally from Ningxia in north-west China, Yang has worked with Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessey, the French luxury brand company for the past 15 years. China is becoming an important player in the world wine industry, and Yang will be important for the Cloudy Bay Wines brand as it makes a foray into the Chinese market. His appointment is also timely as Marlborough develops a sisterregion relationship with Ningxia,

China’s premium winegrowing region. Yang is keen to maintain Cloudy Bay Wines’ premium reputation. “Cloudy Bay Wines is important. It represents things from a long term ideal, the showcase of Marlborough’s wine identity.” The brand has a mission to ‘preserve and participate, to look after quality and the reputation of the industry’, Yang says. “ It ’s ve r y i m p o r t a n t t o Marlborough, Cloudy Bay Wines has been recognised as Marlborough’s most famous internationally growing place. It’s a treasure for this country. “Our company’s interest is to preserve this reputation to the world.” “So people here have to be very conscious - all Cloudy Bay Wines people, all the staff - have to be conscious of this point to recognise that everyone is an ambassador of

FREE BATTERY WHEN YOU INSTALL IGENERATE SUSTAIN

Cloudy Bay Wines”, Yang says. At the same time, everyone with an interest in Marlborough wine has the same role in the wider region, he says. “Recently I had James and Ivan from Dogpoint visit to talk about the future of the industry. Everyone wants to include and involve Cloudy Bay. It’s very important for me to be involved. “It’s part of my mission and job here to start knowing people here. I’m observing and learning at this stage, and to get involved in this big family.” While Cloudy Bay Wines is a business, Yang is also keen to see it as a ‘family’ and to make sure it is an attractive place to work so that it can attract and retain quality staff. The company may make some more vineyard acquisitions as it develops its pinot noir strength, but Yang says Cloudy Bay Wines is not expanding in volume, ‘we’re

extending in terms of quality’. The brand keeps a low profile, he says, but is ‘very precise’ in its quality research. “We’re looking at digging more into the quality perspective, not big volumes in our production. These are very key things for Cloudy Bay Wines.” The move to Marlborough is personally good, as well as professionally good, he says. He moved here six weeks ago with his family, and they have now settled into a house in Springlands and are starting to make friends. “We are at the stage of discovering things as newcomers. “This place, so wonderful it is, I can’t describe it. Every day we find wonderful things, places to be with kids, the Sounds, just discovering it. “There are lots of activities here if you dig into it. The kids love it here.”

Transforming minds During her two-hour drive to work each week Vienna Stockford has a smile on her face. “And on the way home too,” she laughs. Each week Vienna travels from Otautahi (Christchurch) to Timaru, where she teaches raranga (weaving) at Te Wananga o Aotearoa. She says her smile comes from

“The joy on their faces when they actually create something, that’s what I really enjoy. Their whole mind set changes when they are able to successfully complete a product, a kono or a kete. Where previously something may have seemed insurmountable, now it is achievable,” she says. Vienna - Te Rarawa, Te Arawa, Ngati Raukawa ki te Tonga, Ngati Porou – completed a Diploma in Maori Art - (Raranga) Level 5 in 2014 and says it has been a journey of self-discovery. “Raranga is steeped in tikanga (protocols) and kawa (custom practice) and it enables me to reclaim and revive traditional Maori practices. I have the opportunity to transfer this knowledge to future generations, which will ensure the survival of these types of mahi (work).” Kawai Raupapa Certificate in Art (Maori) teaches weaving at an introductory level and Vienna

Education Nelson College A tradition of innovation and progress Nelson College is NZ’s oldest state secondary school and can be described as ‘a boys school with traditions not a traditional boys school’. Traditions establish a strong sense of belonging and community amongst the students and the staff, but they don’t prevent the College from innovating and responding to the changing social and educational needs of boys in the 21st century. The diversity of our options structure with its multiple pathways enables students to reach their potential in whatever field they have a passion for. Alongside the classroom, Nelson College runs a unique student leadership programme, champions performing arts and provides an endless selection of co-curricular activities including 85 sports teams. This combination allows the full breadth of development for the widest possible range of boys. Excellence through robust self-review and a determination to improve lie at the heart of the College’s everyday practice.

We have a clear goal: to be the best we can be for all of our students. This goal provides the focus for developing and challenging our most able students as well as providing extra support for those who need it. A recent (2016) ERO report said, “Nelson College is a high-performing boys’ school with traditions. “Boys show a strong sense of belonging and pride. “They achieve very well in their learning and in sporting and cultural activities. “Teachers take many innovative approaches, providing responsive learning opportunities that engage boys well in their learning. Strong, visionary professional leadership provides a highly inclusive environment for the increasingly diverse range of students.” The College is also pleased to announce that the refurbishment and modernisation of Barnicoat House has recently been completed and invite prospective parents to come and see the difference that boarding at Nelson College can offer.

Enrolments now open for 2018

Koru Institute of Training and Education

Taking Enrolments 2017

Enrol to upskill Thinking of study options or upskilling in the New Year? Blenheim-based Koru Institute of Training and Education Ltd (KITE) is taking enrolments as of January 19 for its February and March intakes. What makes KITE unique is its ability to offer free tertiary courses to students wanting to upskill or transition to new work, while also using its charitable status to provide funding and support for countless community groups, chief executive Monique Gemmell says. “The Maori values governing the institute create an effective working dynamic, where students and teachers are treated like family which make continuing education less daunting,” she says.

Last year KITE had over 300 students studying full and part time courses such as computing, business administration, te reo, social services and Treaty of Waitangi training. KITE also unveiled its newly refurbished building on Sutherland Terrace last year, showcasing its three new classrooms, two furbished classrooms, a smaller employment room and a classroom and garage space for its new Cable Logging programme. This was a welcome change for students who attended last year, enjoying all the comforts and amenities at their disposal. For more information, contact KITE or call in and see one of the friendly team at 5 Sutherland Terrace, Blenheim.

WELCOME: The entrance to the Koru Institute of Training and Education on Sutherland Tce.

About the CEO Monique Gemmell is known for her untiring dedication to KITE, pouring her heart and soul into what she describes as “a role close to my heart”. With a busy family, three businesses to run, directorships and a massive extended family, Monique still goes into work with the same passion as she had right from the beginning. “The people side of the job is very important to me. Everything I do relates to helping people,” she says. At KITE, the team helps people in various ways from tertiary education, career planning, employment opportunities, youth at risk and what ever else is needed to be done.

“At KITE we have a great team who can adapt to the individual needs of all our students. “It’s about making education work for you,” she says. KITE was established by Te Atiawa Manawhenua Ki Te Tau Ihu Trust in 1998 to provide educational opportunities for Te Atiawa. But in 2003 it was bought out by charitable company Te Rau o Te Aroha Ltd and set up for the community at large.

Motorcyclist’s visibility A motorcyclist’s visibility on the road is as much about their position as it is about their lighting. Nelson Bays highway patrol officer constable Mike Turner says a motorcyclist could be “lit up like a Christmas tree” but it would make no difference if they were on the wrong part of the road. Motorcycle safety has been improving, and while avoiding crashes is a responsibility of both motorcyclists and other vehicle drivers, there are steps motorcyclists can take to aid visibility. Without the advantage of size, which a car has, motorcyclists are much harder to spot by other road users, Turner says. “It’s about positioning, and moving your bike from one side of the road to the other,” he says. “You’ve got three metres of road to occupy, if you’re on a long straight section of road, and there’s an intersection coming up on your right, if you’re on the left side of the road you’re going to be more visible, earlier, to a car on that intersection.” On top of positioning, it is a good idea to invest in clothing which is not only protective, but which also increases visibility on the road, Turner says. Creating a point of difference, such as a helmet which contrasts the colour of the rider’s clothing can also help them to stand out on the road, and good use of lights increases visibility. “Make a triangle of your lights on the extremes of your bike, [using] the bike’s handlebars or mirrors … These aspects do indeed make a big difference,” Turner says.

90th birthday celebrations Phyllis McFarlane turns 90 on March 25 which was celebrated early by the Marlborough Floral Art Society, a group Phyllis has belonged to since 1982. She received a lovely bunch of flowers from the group and says she plans to spend the day with family out for lunch. Max van de Sluis from the Netherlands is a celebrated floral designer and is coming to Blenheim early next month.

Renowned floral artist Curtains coming to Blenheim By Celeste Alexander A world renowned floral designer from the Netherlands will be coming to Blenheim next month as part of a large conference being hosted by the Nelson Marlborough Floral Art Society. The Floral Art Society of New Zealand is holding its AGM and conference from April 5-8 and one of the key highlights will be hosting Max van de Sluis, an international award winning floral artist. Max will be presenting a demonstration at the ASB Theatre on April 5, the opening day of the AGM and conference, sharing his philosphy about flower designing and trying to ‘open your eyes to new directions in flower design’. This event is open to the public and tickets can be purchased from Alyssums, Blenheim for $63.

This will be something you won’t want to miss, according to conference convenor Barb Higgins. “The conference is mainly a private function for the society but there is usually a renowned floral designer we get in to speak and give a demonstration, so we are thrilled to be having Max and invite people to purchase a ticket and get along to see him,” she says. The AGM and conference is expecting up to 300 people including some from Ireland and Australia and features workshops for society members, dinners, tours and meetings. This year’s AGM and conference is being hosted in Blenheim by the Nelson/Marlborough area. “This will be so great for the region. Every year we hold our local club’s exhibition so this will be an exciting extension on that,” she says.

Forrest GrapeRide return By Celeste Alexander Craig Harper had not long got off his bike after his world record attempt at cycling from Cape Reinga to Bluff in just four days before getting back on for the Forrest GrapeRide on Sunday. Craig ran a local competition for children wanting to take part in a tandem ride with him during the GrapeRide and winning that was Isha Jones and Gus Jackson. Isha and Gus joined Craig’s daughters Brooke and Hannah to form the Kiwi Can team of ‘mini long white riders’ to each complete 10kms. Their efforts paid off and they won first place for their team work. Craig’s Givealittle page where

he has been raising money for the Graham Dingle Foundation Marlborough’s Kiwi Can programme, is still open and to date has $14,823.01. Overall the day went smoothly despite a protest over who won first place in the Speed Bunnies race which resulted in first place getter Jason Christie being put down in second in favour of Brad Evans. An ‘obstruction’ by Jason was sighted as being the reason for the positions being reversed. Otherwise the day was enjoyed by around 1500 riders, the weather was overcast but not wet and there were no major injuries organisers say.

Cricket trophy moves

Trucks thrill the crowd By Celeste Alexander Eastern States Speedway put on an action packed night of racing with eight visiting stadium trucks making the journey to Marlborough to race. There was no shortage of excitement watching the trucks launch over the dirt ramps before racing one another around the track for a podium position. Receiving their trophies later that night were drivers Grant Adamson in first, and in second equal Jacob Brownlee and Cam Stratford.

Also making their appearance were the Farmlands/Gulf Street Cars who wound up their series with a nailbiting dash for points. This has been a popular event which has seen local businesses and individuals put together teams to race, and from it has attracted new members to the club who have gone on to enter into the production class. Winning first place was Dane Jones (88), in second Phil Steel (34), in third Brad Colville (7), in fourth the Mag & Turbo Blenheim team (27) of John Talbot, Russell Mouat and Darrell Bate and in fifth Ray

Classics from yesteryear John Derry took out the CWF Hamilton Jet Propelled Craft Trophy at this year’s NZ Antique & Classic Boat Show, held at Lake Rotoiti in the Nelson Lakes National Park last weekend. The 20ft Placecraft ‘Going Places’ was previously raced by John’s dad ‘Blue’ and has been restored to it’s former glory by John. A Bay of Islands game-fishing fast boat last in the water in 1946 took out the top prize at this year’s event. The 5.7m kauri fast launch was built in 1929, taken out of the water during the war due to fuel rationing, relaunched briefly in 1946 and had sat in paddocks and sheds around the Bay of Islands until acquired by the current owners in 2011. More than 130 clinkers, steam launches, classic motorboats, sailing dinghies and their owners enjoyed two days of boating and chatting about boats, with the Jens Hansen trophy for best vessel overall going to ‘Malolo’ owned by Max Cumming and Ra Tangaroa from Russell in the Bay of Islands. . Award winning boats were: Best New Craft: 15 foot Cracker Box craft, owned by Karelan & Greg Doran, Queenstown. Best Restoration Prize: 1920s clinker ‘Omerta’ owned by Wayne & Carol Edmonds, Nelson. Citizens Advice are on the lookout for more volunteers Story and photo by Celeste Alexander From March 18 to 24 is Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) Awareness Week and the Marlborough branch is on the look-out for new volunteers. “So if you are interested in people, a good listener, comfortable using a computer and enjoy doing research and learning new things – why not put your hand up to be a CAB volunteer,” training officer Jill Van Ageren says. “We are interested in people from all walks of life, ages and backgrounds. As a CAB volunteer you would be fully supported with initial and ongoing learning as you come up to speed with the challenges and satisfactions of being a CAB volunteer. You’ll also be supported by colleagues and a huge range of resources including a referral database listing more than 35,000 organisations.” It’s incredibly rewarding being a CAB volunteer, Jill says. “It’s the range of issues that you get to help people with.” “On any given day, you could be asked about tenancy rights, locating a support group or having documents signed by a JP, to finding out

whether a person is entitled to a benefit. You work alongside your client to give them the information that they need to take action and deal with issues themselves,” she says. Volunteers Janette Soper, Mike Pink, Sue Duncan and Marion Edgar all agree, saying it’s the people they deal with that makes it so rewarding. Mike has served 12 years, Marion 21 years and Sue three years. Janette was one of the founding members and continuously served the CAB for 34 years, a feat that was recognised this week along with her 80th birthday on March 1. “I recall the first training session we had where we were asked ‘If a woman came in with her 16 year old pregnant daughter, what would you do’? “They were judging us on our reaction. Obviously those kind of questions aren’t asked now,” she laughs. If you’re interested in becoming a CAB volunteer or just want to know more, just pop into the Marlborough Bureau at 25 Alfred Street, Blenheim, call 578 4272 or send an email to marlborough@cab.org.nz.
