Story and photo by Celeste Alexander Marlborough’s grape harvest for 2017 has begun. Hunter’s Wine is a hive of activity as it began its 2017 vintage by harvesting small blocks of pinot noir and pinot meunier for their award winning MiruMiru sparkling wine. Winemaker James Macdonald says the harvest was 10 days late due to a slow start in spring last year, but ‘all was looking good’. Continued on page 2 Hunter’s winemaker James Macdonald pictured with a bunch of pinot meunier harvested for their MiruMiru sparkling wine.

Winding up to harvest time

Les Whiteside

Continuted from page 1 Hunter’s has welcomed six young winemakers from France, Finland, Portugal and England who will be here until May to get a taste of how Marlborough grows and makes its world famous wine. James says an advantage of harvesting their sparkling wine now is that it’s a good opportunity to run in the machinery before they head into the sauvignon blanc. “We are just taking it easy to begin with, making sure everything is in good working order and so far everything has been good. “Our yields are average but we are dialling back our expectations all the time, and as long as we don’t get too much rain between now and April we will be OK,” he says. Winding down from Friday’s start, the visiting winemakers who arrived one

week ago were officially welcomed into Marlborough’s vintage by attending the Framingham Harvest Concert, a celebration of the upcoming harvest season. Wine Marlborough general manager Marcus Pickens says the weather predictions leading into vintage are ‘encouraging’ and should not cause too many issues. “While the rain last weekend didn’t come at the best time, by all reports it hasn’t caused too many issues. In this instance the later season we are experiencing may have helped give the vines and their fruit time to deal with any excess water absorbed. “NIWA still gives an encouraging prediction for us between March and May – a 75 percent chance of average to above average temperatures and the same percentage for average to below average rainfall. I think we can all live with that,” he says.

Kapa haka group heading to England Marlborough’s kapa haka group Te Rerenga o Te Ra has been invited to attend the 53rd Billingham International Festival of World dance in Billingham England in August. Led by tutor Nan Kahu who coordinates the musical programme and choreography, the group will be one of a number of outstanding dance companies from across the globe and the UK featuring a variety of dance styles inpsired by world traditional cultures. They performed last Saturday night at the Red Salt Cafe, Picton and were raising money to go towards the trip. Te Rerenga o Te Ra have participated in past festivals in Germany (2011), Malaysia (2015) and Australia (2016), with all trips being primarily self funded. Anyone wanting to give a koha (donation) can leave one at the Red Salt Cafe for the group.

Youth trust encouraged to grow strong

Building fall A proposed renovation of a McKendry Motors Mazda showroom on Seymour Street has turned into a demolition after the building’s walls turned out to not be as strong as thought. A new showroom will be built in the next couple of months.

Police seize drugs About 30 police staff have executed 12 search warrants over the past fortnight to prevent the supply of drugs, with about 900 cannabis plants found in Nelson and Marlborough. Police also seized two illegal firearms, one loaded with ammunition, $1700, methamphetamine and cannabis utensils, and an indoor growing system. Another 50 sites on public land were visited by police. Eight people were arrested and will be prosecuted, and one person received a warning. Inspector Dan Mattison says the supply of illicit drugs has a big impact on our community, with people committing burglary to fund their habit.

By Cathie Bell Marlborough Youth Trust has a new youth worker, a new manager, and new trustees. Ginny Young has started as the trust’s youth worker, and will continue the excellent work done by previous youth worker Jodye Tomalin, manager Jo Lane says. “Jodye did an amazing job last year,” Jo says. She has now moved on to tertiary study in Wellington. Jo says the trust now has a full team on board backing up Ginny and her work for the ‘gorgeous’ youth in Marlborough. They have two programmes underway at the moment – Cactus and the Youth in Emergency Services project – and more events are planned, she says. Youth Week is at the end of May, with the theme this year being youth raising their voices

to be heard. The trustees are Ross Banbury, Graham Barsanti, Helen McLean, Russell Smith, Alistair Sowman, Dean Buckley, Amaroa Katu, Andrea Cunniffe, contractors Deedee Bancroft and Jo Carey, and youth representative Sosaia Mesui. The trust met on Monday afternoon, and trustee Ross Banbury passed over a young rimu tree to the group. The thing about rimu trees, he says, is that they grow very strong and straight, which makes them good for building. “Back when Marlborough won the Ranfurly Shield, I was a chippy, my background is in building, we had a pile of rimu wood delivered from the West Coast.” The wood is heavy and strong, because the rimu is a slow-growing tree, he says.

“It’s strong, because it grows slow, tall and straight. “One thing people need today, something they can see – a pointer, a point of reference. “Your role as trustees is to be a point of reference and not to waver. Young people need consistency, they may not have it at home or in their life.” Continuing the building theme, Ross says the trust has an important guidance role for young people at certain times of their lives. “It’s like the boxing on the outside of concrete – you’re there while it’s being poured, but the boxing is removed when the concrete sets. “The rimu tree has a guide stick of bamboo planted alongside when it’s starting to grow, but when it’s a tall tree, that guide stick won’t be needed anymore, it won’t be there.”

By Cathie Bell Birthright, the organisation that supports single-parent families, turns 60 in Marlborough this year, and is having an event later this month to celebrate. The event will also mark the end of the organisation, as it is winding up because it is too hard to find people to fill leadership roles. Committee members Carolyn Hannay and Sipa Robson say the group wants to celebrate the 60 years’ milestone with the people who have benefited or been connected with the group in anyway. They encourage people to register for the family-friendly event to be held on March 26 at the Blenheim Indoor Sports Centre by ringing or emailing the group. Carolyn says the group has played an

It was formed in response to another group which looked after military families whose fathers had been killed, when a need was seen for help for non-military sole-parent families. Big bucks spent on track By Cathie Bell Landowners in the Queen Charlotte Track Landowners’ Cooperative have invested more than $100,000 into improvements on the track. Cooperative director Lynda Scott-Kelly says those improvements include the completed installation of 16 beautiful seats and benches, from Kenepuru saddle to Anakiwa, along with hand carved location signs and native plantings. “Many seats and benches are located at the top of rises and hills, like the two at Shamrock Ridge, where visitors love to take a break and photograph the stunning views,” she says. “Visitors just love the unique character these seats, benches and landowner signs give to the track.” She says the landowners’ cooperative will celebrate seven years in operation at its annual meeting this month. The cooperative is made up of 10 private landowners, including a Maori trust, and was formally incorporated after 20 years of landowner contributions to the Queen Charlotte Track.

We have family members affected by cancer so it’s nice to be here to support.

It’s good to support community events like this... cancer affects a lot of people.

I think it’s a great cause, so I’m doing the relay and shaving my head.

I have two colleagues who are affected by cancer, so I’m here in support of them.

They arrived in Seaview, Seddon about five years ago and have been building up numbers since then. As stated in your article, they become more aggressive around lavender flowers and even give the bumble bees a hard time. I include a photo of a wool carder nest which I found in our window frame. Bugs eating caterpillars Dear Ed, I have been breeding Monarch Butterflies in Seaview for a number of years but the other day for the first time I found this bug eating a caterpillar. Thinking it may have been the unwanted Brown Vege Bug I sent the photo to the Ministry for Primary Industries to find out

and they confirmed it wasn`t, so I was relieved at that. Apparently they are not uncommon but it has not been in this district before. They eat all types of caterpillars. Terry Costello Seddon

Done on Dunne Dear Ed, Fed up with getting up in dark due to daylight saving? Well blame Ohariu MP Peter Dunne. He ‘master-minded’ daylight saving and extensions. Now he wants to shift summer holidays back until the weather is hotter. Surely immigration, New Zealand’s heavy debt, society’s ills and violence, deteriorating rivers, sellout to foreigners etc are far more important? Nero (Dunne) fiddles while Rome burns. Dunne entered politics as a MP in the 4th ‘Rogernomics’ Labour government. Since he has been in and out of National and Labour-led governments conveniently jumping over to the government of the day

and snaring a portfolio or two in cabinet. Currently he holds the Internal Affairs, Associate Health, and Associate Conservation portfolios. Dunne is politically promiscuous, jumping from one bed to another to suit himself. As a floating voter I view Dunne’s MP years as 33 mediocre years. If Dunne retired now or is defeated in the 2017 election, his ‘retirement’ super would be over $100,000 per year until he expires. He will get a 90% discount on international fares for he and spouse. On top of that he’ll get national super. You have to wonder what’s in the Ohariu electorate’s drinking water? Don Coyote Blenheim

Maria Hine and Erin Buutveld volunteer at the Omaka Classic Fighters event.

Airshow an ‘intense’ event The Omaka Classic Fighters airshow, held at Easter, is Marlborough’s biggest event. Maria Hine and Erin Buutveld tell Cathie Bell what it’s like to be a volunteer at the airshow.

It’s the biggest event in Marlborough, and the Classic Fighters airshow brings at least 30,000 people through the gates to watch vintage planes do their thing. The event generally runs smoothly, and that’s down to the efforts of a team of volunteers who work hard to make sure people have a good time. Erin Buutveld has worked at the Aviation Heritage Centre in Omaka ‘since the beginning’, she says, and now she is also in charge of co-ordinating the Classic Fighters’ volunteer effort. At the moment, there are about 60 volunteers on the books, excluding the community groups. “I would like to have 350. And the more the better. It’s more fun when there are more people, it makes the job easier.” Tasks include carparking, running the main gate, ticketing, and all the other things that go into operating a smooth airshow.

“For people who come for the event, it all runs smoothly, things are there when they need them. It seems easy but we’ve got to make sure it’s all working. “There’s a lot to do.” Maria Hine was ‘a classic fighters virgin’ during the last airshow, two years ago. “I’m back for a second go around. It’s bigger and better than last time.” For Erin, her job involves finding people like Maria, people who want to come back and be part of the airshow and community groups who want to do it as a team. But both are quick to say anyone is welcome to join the volunteer effort. Maria says you can ‘literally walk in off the street’. “It’s not a secret society.” Indeed, it’s like one ‘big family’, Erin says, with everyone there to make the airshow ‘awesome’. “We get close quite quickly.

 GREAT DEALS  FINANCE AVAILABLE

I only met Maria last year and we’re good friends now.” Maria agrees the volunteer team does make friends quickly. “It’s an intense three days. “You become quite firm friends. Dealing with that number of people coming through, you’ve got to be on your game.” And they’re not joking about the intensity - at the last airshow, one volunteer got two marriage proposals from show visitors. “That was a highlight.” Erin says everyone at the show, attendees and volunteers, had a good time. “It was busy but fun. The attitude of everyone coming in was great, everyone coming to have a good show.” And people shouldn’t be put off by thinking they need to know a lot about the planes either. Maria says she thinks if you don’t know anything about planes, it doesn’t matter. “By the end of the three days,

you can watch something fly over and know what it is by then. “You get schooled up really quickly.” Erin says being a volunteer at the Classic Fighters event gives great access to an event with a special atmosphere. “You’re part of being a team that delivers this amazing airshow. You’re part of that, a really good show. “It is an awesome opportunity to be part of a cool event. The airshow is a massive deal, it’s the biggest event in Marlborough.” Maria says to be a part of that is ‘spectacular’. “It’s big pats on the back all round.” People wanting to volunteer at the Omaka Classic Fighters event can call the Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre or go to the event website and fill out a form: www.classicfighters.co.nz/omaka-airshow-volunteering.php

Top acts coming for fundraiser By Celeste Alexander Two dedicated Alzheimers Marlborough volunteers have organised a variety concert and silent auction to benefit the organisation, headlining the evening with two talented performers. Liz Anderson and Barb Guillemot put their heads together last year and came up with the concert idea which they hope will raise both funds and awareness for Alzheimers Marlborough. “The money we raise will go towards covering the shortfall of funding to ensure the ongoing services that play such an important role in our community,” they say. Mike Field, a Canadian jazz musician, and Helen Medlyn, an opera diva and entertainer, will delight the audience with a night of comedy and music.

For Mike who is currently on his fourth world tour and recently released his chart topping album ‘Attic Jump’, he is looking forward to performing for the Blenheim audience. “When Liz first approached me I thought ‘yeah definitely, it sounds like a great cause’. “I’m also really excited to perform at the new theatre which I’ve heard good things about,” he says. The variety concert and silent auction will be held on Saturday, March 25 from 6pm. “We have a fantastic night planned, now all that remains is to get bums on seats,” Barb says. Tickets cost $60 each and include a glass of wine on arrival and canapes during the evening, and can be purchased from the theatre.

Marine habitat under scope Marlborough District Council marine scientist Steve Urlich is the guest speaker at the Forest and Bird Society’s monthly meeting tomorrow evening. The society has speakers at meetings on the third Thursday of each month, starting at 7.30pm in the Blenheim School Hall on Seymour Street. In a presentation called Where Have All the Fish Gone? The importance of protecting marine habitats in Marlborough, Steve will talk

about why marine habitats are important. He will talk about where the habitats are, what monitoring is being done to find out about them, what that monitoring data is showing and where that information could lead to, with questions afterwards. Celebrating 30 years!

8 Mcartney St, Blenheim

27 GROVE ROAD, BLENHEIM & Congratulations to Daryl, Wendy the Martin Motors team on 30 years of Business!

03 579 1645

Daryl and Wendy Martin of Martin Motors.

Celebrating three decades By Celeste Alexander In 1987 Daryl Martin stepped out as a one man band and opened his business Martin Motors. Now 30 years later he is celebrating the success of the business and extending his appreciation to all of his customers for their support. While much has changed over that time, he says he’s happy where the business is today. “Thirty years ago I set out to work on my own, so to see how the business has grown is really great, but I couldn’t have done it without the support of the community,” he says. Daryl followed in his father’s footsteps and entered into the automotive industry after leaving school. He took over Webb Automotive in Redwood Street (where MTF Vehicle Finance are now) in March 1987, and changed the name to Martin Motors. “This was the same name as the garage my parents owned in Eastbourne 10 years earlier,” he says. There Daryl intended to operate on his own until it got to the point where he was ‘turning away more work than I was doing’. “Things kept getting busier so I moved into a slightly larger building in Main Street, where the Warehouse carpark

now stands. My wife Wendy suggested we employ another mechanic to help out which we did, the work continued to pick up so we employed a second,” he says. In May 2004 Daryl and Wendy purchased a section on McArtney Street, and with the help of his father Ivan they demolished the existing house to make way for a purposebuilt workshop. Every day the workshop is humming with activity with three mechanics, including Daryl, and Wendy taking care of administration after her other job as a dental receptionist. W hile the staff have changed a few times, Daryl says he feels fortunate to have two ‘really good’ mechanics who have been with him for years. “Tom has been with us for nine years and easily steps up if for any reason I’m not here. Luke has been with us for four and a half years,” he says. Going hand in hand with working in the automotive industry comes involvement in motorsport for Daryl, who races a saloon car at the local speedway track. “In the earlier days my mates were petrol heads so we decided to build a car for speedway and when the track was built I have had involvement in various forms since then.

“The business has sponsored some races and do the odd bit of signage there too. I enjoy it,” he says. To everyone who has been a customer of Martin Motors, Daryl and Wendy thank them for their support. “We have a number of customers that have been with us for the full 30 years and we would like to thank them, as well as all of our customers for their support,” he says. Full mechanical services Daryl and his team Tom and Luke provide full mechanical services. The workshop is equipped with all the modern equipment including two post hoists, diagnostic scan tools, ultrascope, on-car brake lathe, tyre fitting and balancing equipment. “We can carry out a full range of repairs on all makes and models of cars and light commercial vehicles,” Daryl says. Martin Motors is also a member of the Capricorn Organisation which enables it to generally access all parts at competitive prices, and offers a discount to Gold Card members. Martin Motors has a position available for a qualified mechanic. Apply in writing includ i ng you r C V to dmartin@xtra.co.nz.

The Child Cancer Foundation Marlborough branch is grateful to any support given by the community, like Piper Alexander of Renwick School who was pictured here last year donating $250 collected from students to Sue Rose and Vicky Neal of the Marlborough branch. If a child in the community is diagnosed with cancer, this branch will help to support the family. File photo.

Blenheim appeal this weekend

It’s that time of year again where the people of Marlborough dig deep to support a very worthy cause - the Child Cancer Foundation street appeal. The Marlborough branch of the foundation will have its volunteers out in force this Friday and Saturday with their collection buckets as well as raising awareness of what the organisation does. There will be collection sites at

local supermarkets and the Mitre 10 Mega store. Marlborough branch chairperson Sue Rose says it’s important for people to know that the money collected locally is spent on local children diagnosed with cancer. “The foundation supports those children while they are away for treatment and we also have funds to support children locally with events,” she says.

Sue and her committee also coordinate monthly events for the families they support including coffee groups, Christmas parties and day excursions. “All of this is only made possible with the support of the local community, so thank you for supporting our street appeal and the work we do,” she says.

How we help families impacted by child cancer The Child Cancer Foundation provides strength and comfort to families, parents and children impacted by child cancer. We give personalised support to each family through a one-to-one connection – someone who can help guide them every step of the way now, and in the future. We help with the big things like emotional, social and practical support. But also the little things they have probably never even thought about. We provide strength in times of doubt, comfort in times of sadness and celebrate times of joy. Every family is different and so is the support they receive. Here are some examples of just some of the support families receive. Family support co-ordinator Our co-ordinators are there for families from the day of their

child’s cancer diagnosis. Many families will be supported by two co-ordinators, one at the treatment centre and one in their community, who work closely together to ensure the needs of the family are met no matter where they are based. Essential care kit Our essential care kits includes little things that will have been forgotten in the rush to hospital and practical items to help during their stay and when they return home. Basics like toothbrushes and shampoo; a comforting blanket, pillow and books, details of the support Child Cancer Foundation provides, our Beads of Courage® programme; along with hospital maps and fact-sheets, all packaged into a roller bag. Travel assistance Over 70% of the families Child Cancer Foundation supports have

to travel outside their community to receive treatment. Even for families who live near to the hospital, the cost of petrol and parking from hundreds of trips quickly adds up. We assist with travel costs and help keep families together. Household support We offer help by assisting with groceries, heating and electricity costs as well as other basic living needs that families may struggle to meet during such a difficult time. Support in the community We coordinate local parent support groups and provide camps for families and siblings of children with cancer, allowing them to connect, communicate and find strength from shared experiences. Our support is powered by you, your donations and ongoing support, so thank you!

For over three years the drive over the Whangamoa Saddle has been a regular event for Doctor David Orsbourn of enhanceskin. His bi-weekly visits to the Churchill Private Hospital in Blenheim have helped many Marlburians free themselves from unsightly varicose veins and the pain and discomfort so often associated with them. But David will tell you that there are still many misconceptions surrounding the cause and effect of varicose veins and their treatment, and he is always keen to enlighten people to prevent unnecessary suffering from this medical condition; so we asked him to give the T.V. Myth Busters a run for their money, and debunk five misunderstandings around varicose veins. Mary Tolan(RN).

Myth: Varicose veins are always visible. Mythbuster: Whilst varicose veins will often protrude or appear swollen, they are not always visible. If you suffer from heavy, tired, itchy, crampy, restless or tingly legs; or if your ankles are frequently swollen or blue, you could be suffering from venous disease. Myth: Women suffer more from varicose veins than men. Mythbuster: Whilst pregnancy and menopause are factors in the formation of varicose veins, genetics is probably the main issue, so we treat lots of men who have varicose veins too. As an aside, it is definitely a myth that women should wait until they have completed their family to have veins treated; that just makes for an extremely uncomfortable next pregnancy; so treat them first with our minimally invasive treatments. Myth: Only seniors are affected by varicose veins.

Mythbuster: Not at all… At enhanceskin we treat plenty of clients in their twenties and thirties for varicose veins. Our age range to date is 17 to 94 years old! Myth: People only have their varicose veins treated for vanity’s sake. Mythbuster: This is a common misconception. Whilst you will look great following treatment and be able to wear shorts again, veins are definitely not just a cosmetic problem. They can cause heavy, painful, tired legs, with associated cramps, skin discolouration, itch, and restlessness, and if left untreated can carry longer term health risks such as dermatitis, ulcers and even deep vein thrombosis, (blood clots) especially with long distance travel. Myth: Varicose vein treatment involves a hospital stay. Mythbuster: In the past, invasive surgical stripping was the only way to treat the appearance and symptoms of varicose veins. This was (and is) expensive, requiring general anesthesia and hospitalisation, and more painful. At enhanceskin we offer Ultrasound Guided Foam Sclerotherapy, the minimally invasive Endovenous Laser Ablation – the current ‘gold standard’ treatment, as well as the brand new VenaSeal- a medical glue! All are walk in and walk out treatments, you can drive home afterwards, and are generally able to be at work the next day! These are all still covered by your Surgical Health Insurance. To help clients gain even more clarity around varicose vein treatment, enhanceskin offers a free, no obligation, doctor’s vein assessment and scan. Simply call 03 548 8216 to book an appointment with Doctor David Orsbourn.

Health workers ‘missing’ A display of 200 cutout figures was set up at Seymour Square to highlight the ‘missing’ workers in the health system. Healthcare union organisers say that nine out of ten people working in health say they don’t have enough staff or resources. The YesWeCare.nz Survey of 6000 health workers found 90 per cent say the health system doesn’t have the staff and resource required to

give New Zealanders the healthcare they need when they need it. The display, in Blenheim last Friday, is part of a national roadshow this month by a new community - health workforce coalition for better health funding, called YesWeCare.nz. Auckland-based emergency nurse Nico Woodward says health underfunding is New Zealand’s biggest health risk.

“I get as frustrated and angry as patients and families with emergency department delays,” he says. “Not being able to care for someone, when you know you could if you were staffed properly, is distressing.” He says health funding hasn’t kept up with an ageing and growing population. The Council of Trade Unions estimates the government has underfunded health by more than $1.85 billion.

Kennard to step down in July History-making Kiwi rally co-driver John Kennard will step down from his role as Hayden Paddon’s co-driver in the FIA World Rally Championship after July’s Rally Finland. Kennard, based in Blenheim, and Paddon have enjoyed a 12-year partnership which has taken the now famous Kiwi pair from domestic rally competition to the heights of world rallying. During his time in world rally competition, Kennard made his own mark, particularly in the years alongside Paddon. He competed in New Zealand as a driver back in the late ‘70s, but moved to the codriver’s seat in 1985, claiming his first WRC podium alongside Kiwi driver Malcolm Stewart at Rally New Zealand in 1988. Kennard has also worked for WRC teams, firstly as team co-ordinator for Mitsubishi Japan, a similar role with Prodrive’s Subaru World Rally Team and then a year managing Mitsubishi’s rally programme in USA. He began a Marlborough vineyard business with business partner Brett Rawstron in 2003, but meeting Paddon in 2005 brought Kennard

back into the sport competitively and together, they won the New Zealand Rally Championship in 2008 and 2009. They made history with their victory at Rally Argentina as the first New Zealanders to ever win a round of the FIA World Rally Championship. Kennard says that after 12 years as Hayden’s co-driver, it will be hard to lever himself out of that Hyundai i20 Coupe WRC seat for the last time. “But now, it’s timely that we re-arrange roles for maximum effect and to help complete the quest we’re all on – to bring the WRC Championship trophy home to New Zealand.” Paddon says he can’t thank John enough for everything he’s contributed in these 12 years. “But this is not the end. He will stay involved, helping me behind the scenes and, as he has played an important part in the journey so far, it’s only natural that he remains a part of it.” An announcement regarding Paddon’s new co-driver from Finland onwards will be made John Kennard is stepping out of his co-driver’s role in July. within a few days.

Cricket report Both Tasman Premier League games were washed out last Saturday with Marlborough Labour Hire Falcons remaining 4 points clear at the top of the table with two games remaining. This Saturday both Marlborough teams are again playing at Horton Park with the Falcons taking on WTTU while the Dolphins play Wakatu. Both games start at 11am. All 2nd grade games were also casualties of the wet weather but there was action in 3rd grade with wins for Renwick and Picton QCC leaving the competition wide open with one round to play. Current standings see Renwick & Celtic on 16 pts with Wairau on 12pts and Picton QCC on 6. In 2nd Grade Picton are confirmed as one finalist with Renwick and Wairau tied on 20 pts and the two Celtic teams a further 4 pts back and still in with a chance if both Renwick and Wairau slip up in final round action this Saturday.

Karts are go Kartsport Marlborough is hosting the third and final round of its Twilight series on Saturday at the Cresswell Electrical Raceway on Wither Road. Club spokesman Neil Butts says that in the juniors Sam Buglar and Arthur Broughan are leading their respective classes. “Sam in the Mini Rok class has put together four first and second placings over the eight heats so far to have a good lead,” he says. “Arthur in the Cadet Rok driving in his first competitive race series is consistently finishing thirds and fourths and will have to drive very well in the last round to stay on the podium in what is a very tight points table.” William Exton has returned from his overseas racing in Italy and Australia to sit third

in Rotax Junior class, Neil says. In the Seniors Rotax Light drivers Richie Chapman and Daniel Francis have some work to do to improve their placings and will be looking forward to some solid results in the last round, he says. “The very competitive Rotax Heavies is being dominated by Kevin Barker from Nelson. Local drivers Neil Butts and Peter Richardson are locked in the battle for the third spot on the podium.” A new class to Kartsport is the Briggs powered class, designed to be a cost effective class for people who would like to race on a smaller budget, Neil says. “Racing is always very tight and competitive.” Racing starts at 3pm, and entry is free with all spectators are welcome.
