Camps Top return ranking awaits Worker ‘villages’ to be set up Story and photo by Celeste Lodewyk She is one of our region’s top sportswomen and on the international stage, Megan Craig is fast climbing towards her goal of being the world number one ranked women’s squash player. Helping her toward this dream will be a fundraising dinner held on April 24 which will feature Megan’s idol and former world squash champion Dame Susan Devoy as guest speaker. Continued Page 5.

By Cathie Bell ‘Villages’ to house workers rebuilding the railway and road between Ward and Kaikoura are to be set up, echoing those of the 1930s and 1940s. New Zealand Transport Agency earthquake recovery manager Steve Mutton says The North Canterbury Transport Infrastructure Recovery (NCTIR) alliance plans to use prefabricated accommodation to house workers living away from home for the recovery work on State Highway 1 and KiwiRail’s Main North Line. These will see about 50 workers housed near Ward and another 300 in Kaikoura. Continued on page 2 Work on the north side of Ohau Point with a remote control excavator.

‘Worker villages’ to return for rail and road Continued from page 1 Steve says in order to open the road and rail corridor with minimal delays, NCTIR needs to house more than 300 men and women on site to meet its end of year deadline. “The accommodation facility is critical to the job and needs to be set up by mid-May to meet the end of year target. “Similar temporary housing arrangements are commonly used to accommodate workers on large scale, short-term projects in other countries.” Prefabricated units from Australia will be set up in Kaikoura to house 300 workers, he says. Separate to the Kaikoura workers village, there will be around 50 people on leased accommodation on the north Clarence side of Kaikoura, he says. “NCTIR is in touch with the community and is searching for the right mix of available homes/ motels and or campervan sites for the northern-based crews.” The accommodation will be simple, suitable for the climate through winter and to meet workers’

needs, Steve says. Each person will have their own room and ensuite toilet/shower with shared recreational areas. “Prefabricated modern facilities are fully selfcontained and come with all necessary services to house around 300 staff. “They are used in large scale infrastructure projects like mining operations in Australia where contractors fly in and fly out. “The facility will be removed from site at the end of the job.” NCTIR is organising the delivery of 75 units, each with four self-contained bedrooms/ensuites, 300 rooms total, Steve says. “Separate to this, there will be recreational facilities – a dining hall, laundry, gymnasium etc. “The location is still to be confirmed but it will be one site for both male and female engineers/ crews, close to Kaikoura town, fully self-contained and generating a large amount of economic activity for Kaikoura people/businesses in terms of food supplies and catering, laundry workers, cleaners and

other services to help run this small village.” The proposed workers’ villages are reminders of the railway construction villages along the east coast that popped up between 1936 until the line between Picton and Christchurch opened in 1945. One such village was Aniseed Village north of Kaikoura. This railway construction village, from the late 1930s into the World War Two years, had a high population, the prefabricated cottages housing complete families. Each camp had a school, and a hall. Kaikoura District Community Expo – Saturday, 1 April, Memorial Hall, 32 Esplanade, midday to 5.30 pm. Duncan Gibb, project director for the North Canterbury Transport Infrastructure Recovery alliance work, is speaking between 2.30 and 3pm on the harbour and roading infrastructure and will cover the temporary accommodation plans then.

By Cathie Bell The Marlborough Express is to drop two daily issues, moving to publish in the morning three days a week, at the cost of two jobs. Australian owned Fairfax Media will continue with their community papers, with one moving from Wednesday to Thursday. The changes, which will see the Marlborough Express shift to a morning newspaper published Monday, Wednesday and Friday, take effect from May 17. Fairfax Media group executive editor Sinead Boucher says the company hopes the new model will prove to be more sustainable. “By shifting the Marlborough Express to a morning publication and reducing the number of days we print, we will be making significant savings in distribution and production. “The reality is we can’t continue with a daily newspaper in Marlborough for much longer, but we have been an integral part of the community for 150 years and we want to stay that way.” The company has asked for nominations for voluntary redundancy in the next fortnight.

Fatal crash One person has died following a crash on Sunday night and three others were injured, the police say. Police were called to the single vehicle crash on State Highway 6 near KaitunaTuamarina Road, Marlborough just before 11pm on Sunday night, and there were four people in the car, one male has died and the three other people received injuries and have been hospitalised. The Serious Crash Unit is investigating.

Most claims by year end Private insurers plan to have made the majority of cash settlement offers by the end of the year for all commercial and residential claims, the Insurance Council says. About 38,000 claims have been made from last November’s 7.8 earthquake, council chief executive Tim Grafton says. Jill Moorhouse, Sarah Bates and Nic Reddington are part of a family business that is selling solar powered biomass cookers, which has set up Pacific Island project that raises money to provide cookers to villages.

Govt fails migrant workers

Family’s humanity work By Celeste Alexander Three generations of women from the Moorhouse family are doing some inspiring humanity work with villages throughout the Pacific Islands. Jill Moorhouse, Nic Reddington, Bec Moorhouse, Sarah Bates and Samantha Thomas own Kiwi Clean Living company which sells the ACE1 Biomass cooker, a solar powered product that was designed by family friends the Walker family in Africa. This cooker was originally designed to save thousands of lives in Africa, Syria and throughout the world. The Walker family owned a vineyard on the Moorhouses property in Marlborough and a friendship was developed. When the Walker family cam-

paigned to provide safe and clean water, energy, warmth, shelter and survival technology, the Moorhouse family knew they wanted to be involved. “We asked them, ‘can we do that too?’,” Jill says. “We were inspired to help our Island neighbours thanks to the RSE workers that come to Marlborough to work in the viticulture.” The family, through Kiwi Clean Living, began a sponsorship programme by donating the first cooker to a widower from the Maniava settlement village in Fiji. A second was donated by the Reverand Dawn Daunauda of the Awatere Joint venture. The next island in to benefit from the cookers is Vanuatu. Local early childhood teacher

Angela Gray has been appealing for donations to send to the the locals, so in response the Moorhouse family have got involved. “We are now raising funds so we can send our cookers to Vanuatu with Angela on her next trip to the island of Lelepa. We are thrilled that a local family has donated five cookers to go along with one we are sending, as well as six Makos rugby balls from Tasman Rugby. “We are also working on finding water tanks that can be donated so the school and kindergarten children have clean drinking water available without having to row the 8km return trip everyday to collect water,” Sarah says. Next on the list for the Moorhouse family is to help the RSE

workers living and working in Marlborough. “Ideally what we would love to see is for each worker to be able to take a cooker with them when they return home. We would love the viticulture companies to get on board to help their workers cover the costs of a cooker. “The large majority of them still cook over open fire,” Sarah says. To help kickstart this initiative the Moorhouse family will give each RSE worker their first $30 towards the cookers in a programme they have created. “The RSE workers can then pay the cookers off. It’s our way of trying to help them as it’s a valuable tool they can take home to their families and potentially save lives.”

The invasive weed Spartina is close to eradication in the Marlborough Sounds, the Government says. Conservation Minister Maggie Barry says spartina, one of the Dirty Dozen weeds targeted in the War on Weeds 2017, clogs waterways. “It’s a prime example of an introduced plant brought in to reclaim land for grazing that has run rampant and is badly affecting waterways.

The Government has failed to a d e q u a te l y p r o t e c t m i g r a n t workers from exploitation, Labour’s Immigration and Workplace Relations spokesperson Iain Lees-Galloway says, with no labour inspector based in the Marlborough region despite the high use of migrant workers. When the Recognised Seasonal Employer scheme began ten years ago, six Labour Inspectors and six compliance officers were responsible for monitoring and supporting up to 5000 workers, and now there are up to 10,500 workers but no additional labour inspectors or compliance officers, he says.

By Glenise Dreaver Relief for tourists new to town has arrived, with Picton’s new $450,000 toilet block, installed on reserve land beside the i-Site this week. The toilets appeared in the town as a prefabricated unit just a week before it was opened last Friday. Marlborough District Council Parks Officer Grahame Smaile said the block, built in Auckland, had arrived on the back of a truck the previous Thursday. The tricky site meant it took slightly longer than usual to install, as it is on a slight embankment. The roof was also difficult, as they had to be

mindful of the mini-golf site, giving access from only three sides. “And there were also the cabbage trees at each end. “I was adamant they had to stay.” The council had been able to access $187,000 from the Government’s Regional Mid-sized Tourism Facilities Grant Fund. This initiative from the Ministry of Business Innovation targets tourism facilities and infrastructure in areas like Picton and it meant ratepayers did not bear the full cost. The toilets are, he says, part of a bigger project that included the construction of decking around the i-Site and reconfiguring the building’s interior.

Dear Ed, Proficiat (congratulations) Peter Yealands and son Aaron. Again Yealands is the grape industry’s leader. He does not waffle - his credo is- Yealands has an operating problem, Yealands find the solution and subsequently invests in plant and equipment to solve the problem. No dithering, no vague hopes that the problem might go away by itself. It does not! I sincerely hope the Marlborough District Council will support this recycling project and not bureaucratically kill it by asking too many what-if questions or employing too many wiseguy consultants and above all, leave politics out of it. Facts only. Tony Thiel Blenheim

Dear Ed, Concerning differing petrol prices between Levin and Blenheim (25 cents). There is a local case where prices between Blenheim and Picton (26 kms apart) differ by eight cents. That seems so odd that a cynical person might conclude that there’s collusion between Blenheim service stations. Should we call in ‘Crusher’ Collins to investigate Marlborough’s unusual situation? Lost penpal family sought Dear Ed, My Dad (Colin Wright) died a number of years ago. After WW2 he spent quite a bit of time in Blenheim and became very good friends with a lady by the name of Mrs Eyre Walker. Her family took him in after he suffered quite a bit of mental trauma fighting in Borneo with the Australian army. Dad encouraged me to write to her. I was an avid fan of hers. She sent me stamps from all around the world which I still have today and cherish the fond thoughts.

We exchanged letters for a number of years before she passed away herself. She had a daughter by the name of Margaret who married. My parents went to NZ to see them in 1980. I am going to NZ in July with my family and would very much like to see Margaret if she is still alive. I know it is a long shot but if you could help with a contact it would be much appreciated. Dear Ed, After I read your article about scam calls in The Sun (March 17) I would like to share my solution to this problem with Sun readers. I bought a phone with an answering machine and a number display. Then I contacted my telephone company and subscribed to their ‘Caller ID’ service which costs about $3 a month. I have found that scam callers invariably withhold their number for obvious reasons. When a call from a scammer is received my phone displays ‘Anonymous’. So when I see ‘Anonymous’ displayed I let

the answer machine take the message. Scammers never talk to answering machines, there is no point, so no message is left. If the call is from a genuine person either their number is displayed or they will leave a message so that I can call them back. Of course I had to buy a telephone with built-in answering machine plus the caller ID service. But the elimination of worry and risk of becoming a victim of fraud make it a very good investment. Evan Robinson Redwoodtown

Water worries Dear Ed, Years ago, when we lived in Hari Hari, a farmer’s cow accidentally fell into a hole headfirst. Somehow, the cow remained upright with its body and hind legs vertical. Some bright spark nailed a sign to a tree, saying ‘this is the cow that jumped over the moon!’. All the loopies would stop and take photos. I’m over the moon but not that far yet. I’ve still got my head! I’m over the moon to see all these young

people on TV saying ‘NO!!!’ to selling off our water. They still have their heads. Ninety-nine per cent of these young people will get real jobs when they leave school. One per cent won’t be able to handle a real job, they will get jobs as government politicians, officials, councillors, and council staff and keep their heads in a hole. Loopies can take photos but not our ONLY CLEAN WATER. Roger McClimont Havelock

Cruise ship lunch for flower ladies By Cathie Bell Fifteen of Picton’s Flower Ladies enjoyed the hospitality of a cruise ship and made it onboard the Emerald Princess last Friday, rather than just standing on the wharves meeting passengers. Ship’s agent Rob Burn worked with Emerald Princess master Captain Martin Stenzel to welcome the group on board for lunch to say thank you for the welcome the group gives passengers as they arrive in Picton. Martin says the passengers know about the flower ladies and look forward to the welcome in Picton. “Word gets round the ship about the welcome in Marlborough.

“New Zealand is a beautiful country and the people here are so welcoming.” Rob says it is fitting the flower ladies were welcomed onboard and given lunch, because of their huge voluntary effort welcoming cruise ship passengers. “Without volunteers, we don’t have a society,” Rob says. At the same time, two members of the group were on their way to Rotorua for the national TrustPower community group awards, after winning last year’s Marlborough event. Yvonne Rigby and Margaret Frisken, along with Marlborough District Mayor John Leggett and

his partner Anne Best, gave an eight minute presentation on what the group has achieved and why they deserve the title of Trustpower National Community Awards Supreme Winner. The awards were won by Invercargill’s Koha Kai, which creates a pathway to employment for people disadvantaged by disability to enable true integration into their local community, all through the love of kai. Bay Bush Action Trust, a group representing the Far North District, was named the Runner-Up and the Whetu Mataiata Award winner was the Buller High School Bollywood Some of the Picton Flower Ladies who came to lunch on the Emerald Group from the Buller District. Brian and Dot Fitpatrick, owners of the Blenheim Indoor Centre have purchased 10 zorb balls and are hosting an open day this Sunday.

Zorb balls new addition to sports centre By Celeste Alexander Imagine strapping yourself inside of a giant inflatable ball, then running around bumping into one another. Sounds like fun? The owners of Blenheim Indoor Sports think so. Dot and Brian Fitzpatrick purchased the zorb balls earlier this week and are planning a fun filled open day this Sunday to allow the public to find out just how fun they are for themselves. There are 10 zorb balls available for hire for ages 12-years and over. Simply put the ball over you, put on the shoulder straps and hold on to the two handles. Dot says there are many fun activities these balls can be used

for including bachelor and bachelorette parties, birthday parties and group functions. Simply bounce around or play bubble soccer, she says. “It’s something new and different that we are offering, particularly to teenagers who want something fun to do at the weekend. “They are a great addition to the ten-pin bowing and other indoor sports we offer,” she says. The zorb balls are available for hire individually on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The open day will be this Sunday from 11am. The balls can be hired at the special price of $5 for 15 minutes.

Decade’s dedication to deliveries

Funky Fish owner Calvert James says the demand for Bluff Oysters since the season began saw him sell out within two days of his first order. “I had people lined up outside waiting for them, it’s always an exciting time for us.

“It has got to the point where I have to go to the supermarket and buy them just to keep up, otherwise I could be waiting for the wholesaler,” he says. Calvert began with 20 dozen which sold in two days and has another 50 dozen on order.

Kiwi classics on stage Kiwi culture takes centre stage in tomorrow’s Cavalcade concert when the Andrew London Trio teams up with Wayne Mason of the Warratahs. Wayne composed what is considered to be the top New Zealand song, ‘Nature’ by the band Fourmyula. Dubbed the ‘Modern Minstrel’, Kapiti songwriter Andrew London teams up with his trio for an evening of musical hilarity featuring Kiwi social and political themes at the ASB Theatre from 7.30pm tomorrow. A self-taught guitarist, Andrew has performed with rock bands, jazz trios, stage shows and as a soloist. Now living on the Kapiti Coast, he is primarily involved with the Andrew London Trio, which features his wife Kirsten on bass and saxophonist Nils Olsen. Nils will also be seen in July as Lead Sax in the RNZAF Jazz Orchestra.

The trio has released more than a dozen albums, mostly which have been his own original material, with Hot Club Sandwich, The Cattlestops, and under his own name. A bonus is the trio will be joined by Wayne for their Blenheim show. Wayne, like Andrew, is known for his songs with groups like Fourmyula and The Warratahs as well as his solo work that reflect Kiwi culture in its many forms. Andrew’s whimsical songs reflect mainstream Kiwi culture with gentle irreverence, and playfully lampoon many of society’s obsessions and taboos. Themes run the gamut from rugby fans, driving habits, youth culture and weddings, to male insecurities, technophobia, household appliances, pretentious socialites, and various other issues of concern to the average middle-aged, middle-class Antipodean baby-boomer.

Marlborough is getting its Yellow phone books again this month, and for the Rotary Club of Blenheim South, it marks the club’s ten-year anniversary of delivering the books to homes and businesses as an essential portion of its yearly fundraising efforts. Club treasurer Bob Marks says he has a loyal group of around twenty-five members who set out to conquer the job. “We deliver around 11,000 books to rural Marlborough, and we cover almost the entire stretch of the Marlborough Province – that’s 10 per cent of New Zealand’s total land mass.” The money raised by the book deliveries goes into the Rotary club’s charitable trust, to then be distributed to various deserving organisations. “We raise the money with our own hands, to go to those that need it,” he says. “We help send a local Marlborough youngster to Air Training Corps, or give a student the opportunity to attend the big Summer Science School at Auckland University. A lot of the money is used to fund scholarships for local schools, some of which are in memory of teachers who have passed, who were also once members of our club.” The Rotary Club of Blenheim South is also a major funder of the St. Marks Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Centre, as well as a financial supporter of the Rotary International Foundation, which is committed to funding international initiatives such as those led by the World Health Organisation. “It’s nice to know that money we raise is doing good in the world,” Bob says. Yellow CEO Michael Boersen says the directory service’s goal is to help connect people and their communities. “And what better way than to have locals delivering the books themselves, with their efforts directly benefiting their organisations.”

Council’s Water Supplies Plumbosolvent Many water sources used for public water supplies in New Zealand are plumbosolvent. This means that the water is slightly acidic and can dissolve metals such as lead and copper out of brass fittings, if the tap has not been used for a period of time. Council’s water supplies for Blenheim, Picton, Renwick and Havelock are plumbosolvent. The Ministry of Health requires the following notice to be printed six monthly to advise consumers of this: Ministry of Health – Public Notice Some plumbing fittings have the potential to allow minute traces of metals to accumulate in water standing in the fittings for several hours. Although the health risk is small, the Ministry of Health recommends that you flush a mug full of water from your drinking-water tap each morning before use to remove any metals that may have dissolved from the plumbing fittings. We are recommending this simple precaution for all households, including those on public and private water supplies.

Flight Lieutenant Nathan Barrack, left, and Pilot Officer Richard O'Flaherty with a Texan training plane at Woodbourne.

Pilots fly in formation By Cathie Bell The clear skies and fine weather over Marlborough are proving just the ticket for air force trainee pilots and their new planes. Five of the air force’s eleven new T-6C Texan II training planes, ten students, as well as their instructors and maintenance engineers are visiting Base Woodbourne for two weeks as part of Exercise Wiseowl, to test their formation flying. Usually based at Ohakea in Manawatu, the trainees are in agreement that Marlborough’s a better place to fly. “It’s definitely better weather than in Manawatu,” Pilot Officer Richard O’Flaherty says. “The scenery’s not too bad.”

The training sees pilots fly about 10 feet from each other, he says, at about 180 knots in different environments, including over the ranges and the Marlborough Sounds. This course is the first to use the Texans, and Richard says they go ‘a lot’ faster than the CT4 trainers. “The CT4 is like a Toyota, this is more like a Ferrari.” Flight Lieutenant Nathan Barrack agrees, saying the CT4s were fun, ‘but this goes faster, higher, further, and can pull more gees’. “She’s pretty sporty. The first time I got into it, it almost felt like borrowing someone’s sports car, compared to Mum and Dad’s Ford Laser.”

Local speedskater Erin Green with Timaru coach and three times world champion Cheryl Begg, with some of the local kids who are part of the Blenheim Rollerskating Club, Harper Smith, Zaidee Turkington, Stevie Smith, Cobi Taylor, Ashleigh Meek and Eve Owers.

Skating world champion coaches local club By Celeste Alexander Former three times world speed skating champion Cheryl Begg visited Blenheim at the weekend to spend time with the Blenheim Rollerskating Club. The two day event saw 36 skaters from Timaru, Nelson and Blenheim come together, along with their coaches and parents to go through skills, drills and fun skating activities. Local coach Roxanne Green says it was ‘amazing’ to have Cheryl and her assistant Chrissie Clarke up for the weekend.

“It was an opportunity to show the parents what we can do. “The club is not just skating around the rink, there’s a lot of skills involved. It was also great for us as coaches to have Cheryl spend time with us giving us advice and tips... and even the parents too.” According to Cheryl the Blenheim club is growing and doing ‘some great stuff’. “The support that coaches Roxanne and Samantha are giving the club is encouraging to see. They have cranked the club up to what it is now. “My role this weekend has been to

provide some education to the Nelson and Blenheim coaches as well as getting the parents enthusiastic,” she says. As part of the weekend the skaters spent time at the Blenheim rollerskating rink on Stephenson Street, Athletic Park and the Marlborough Lines Stadium 2000. The next major event for the club will be the Queen’s Birthday Extravaganza run by the Tasman Speed Skating here in Blenheim. It will be three days of skating with people coming from all over the country for it, finishing with a marathon.

Led by a fine century from man of the match Mark Zillwood, Renwick’s batsmen racked up 233 for 5 batting first. Niwhai Tainui top scored with 55 in Picton’s gallant response as they were all out for 188 with Ed Gilhooly picking up 6 wickets. Wairau are the 3rd grade T20 winners defeating Celtic in the other club final, Mitchell Gee top scoring with 52 for Wairau.
