Hub rejected Nurses want to stay put

By Cathie Bell Moving district nurses from a purpose-built space at Wairau Hospital into the health hub will be bad for patients, a former nurse says. Annie Lomax says she and her former colleagues don’t understand why the Nelson Marlborough District Health Board is so keen to move the district nurses away from the hospital resources, and says there should be more consultation with them and the community. “I don’t think the public has been told anything.” The health board says it is ‘working hard on finalising new health services to be based in the expanded Marlborough Health Hub’ in Queen Street, in Blenheim’s central business district and is ‘meeting regularly’ with the district nurses. Continued on page 2 Former district nurse Annie Lomax doesn't know why the health board wants to move district nurses into town.

Nurses don’t want to move from hospital base Continued from page 1 Former nurse Annie says she was a district nurse for 13 years, finishing in August last year, and she keeps in touch with other nurses in Marlborough. “The morale’s not good up there at the moment, this is hanging over their heads, and it’s a big ‘why?’ Why send them into the health hub in town?” She says the district nurses are in a purpose-built space at the hospital now, and the move would see the health board paying about $150,000 a year in rent. The nurses’ location at the hospital meant specialists could be consulted easily, and patients could see several health professionals at the same time, important for cancer patients and the elderly. It is hard to see the benefits for nurses or patients, Annie says. The Sun has heard from several other people concerned about the proposed move, but none would put their names forward. Nelson Marlborough District Health Board general manager of strategy, planning, and community

Cathy O’Malley says in a written statement health board staff are working hard on finalising new health services to be based in the expanded Marlborough Health Hub. “District nurses are one group of prospective tenants, and we are meeting regularly with this group. We met again with them this week.” Cathy says ‘there are pros and cons with every location, including the current base for district nurses at Wairau Hospital’. “We are working through ‘models of care’ and building fit-out and other logistics, with prospective tenants directly.” The expansion of the hub is a complex investment, she says, and both the Wairau Hospital and the hub itself are very important to the Marlborough community. “The community are our main focus for getting the configuration of services right. “Keeping people well and in the community, closer to home, will be at the heart of a strengthened

primary and community health system.” The health board’s Primary and Community Health Strategy, and the Health for Tomorrow Strategy make this very clear, Cathy says, and ‘these strategies have been informed by consultation with the community, general practice teams, hospital and community-based providers and consumers’. “We are now starting to move forward with these strategies, redesigning primary and key community services to wrap around general practice and support enhanced care in community settings. “We want to make the best decision for the health of our community – this includes making sure that staff are supported to deliver the best care. We are in the middle of a complex process and will announce the final tenants once we have finalised the hub configuration and fit-out. We are still several weeks away from this point.” • What do you think of this proposal? Contact the Sun to have your say by emailing news@ blenheimsun.co.nz

Stepping up cycling safety to come By Cathie Bell Safety improvements could be scheduled for danger spot Alabama Road after The Sun mapped accident data and found it is the worst road in Blenheim for cycling accidents, especially at the intersection with Weld Street. Alabama Road is the Education Ministry’s preferred site to put the proposed combined secondary schools, and that would see at least 400 extra cyclists travel down that road each day. Ma rlborough Roads highway manager Frank Porter says the intersection at Alabama Road and Weld Street was among 14 Marlborough district intersections that were part of a crash reduction study. The crash reduction study looked at crashes involving all road users,

not just cyclists, he says. “Following the study, a number of safety improvements have been proposed, and we are in the process of considering which intersections will be funded for safety improvements in 2017.” The crash reduction study was based on current traffic patterns and usage, Frank says. “If the Alabama Road site is confirmed as the new site for the combined Marlborough Colleges, Marlborough Roads and the Marlborough District Council will consider if any additional measures need to be put in place to help ensure the safety of students cycling to school.” No further information on the proposed safety improvements was available when the Sun went Marlborough Boys’ College students cycle to school. to print.

Get involved in Renwick community The annual general meeting of the Renwick Residents Association (known as Renwick Smart and Connected) will be held today, Wednesday, April 5 from 7pm at the Woodbourne Tavern. Open to the public.

Riverlands house burns A two-storey house in Riverlands burnt on Monday night, with the house gutted. State Highway One between Lybster Street and Alabama Road was closed, and diversions were put in place. Emergency services were in attendance after receiving reports of the fire at approximately 7pm, and while the house was destroyed, no-one was injured.

Local man Stefan Collin with his 1976 RX Maxda 808 wagon that was once owned by professional drift car driver ‘Mad Mike’ Whiddett. Photo provided.

Iconic drift car restored By Celeste Alexander At the age of 14 local man Stephan Collins had a poster of ‘Mad Mike’ Whiddett’s 1976 RX Mazda 808 wagon (FURSTY) on his bedroom wall. Fast track 13 years and Stephan now has that same car in his garage. For Stefan, a car salesman at Mayfield Motorworld, says it’s always been his dream to not only own that car and have it set up exactly how drift superstar Mad Mike did, but he also wanted to feature in the NZ Performance Car magazine. These are all dreams that Stephan has realised over the past 12 months. It’s also been an exciting couple of weeks for Stefan who spent time with Mad Mike and NZ rapper Tom Francis who came to Blenheim with a film crew in tow, to film the car doing skids and burnouts for Tom’s new music clip for a single that will soon be released.

Filming was done at the Riverlands Industrial Estate and according to Mad Mike who later posted online, “... it was a rad day bringing back many memories from the early 2000’s doing phat skids...”. While the car might look exactly how Mad Mike had it before it was sold, it’s actually taken a lot of work to restore it back to it’s

“I remember first seeing it when Mad Mike had it at Skidfest and fell in love with it.” iconic look, Stefan says. “He sold it and no one had seen it in years, then I happened to see it online and it had been changed.

“I contacted the owner and struck a deal, bought it and drove it home from up North. “My plan was to strip it down and restore it,” he says. Stefan got in contact with Mad Mike to say he had bought the car and what his plans were for it. “I was building it based on the article in a 2005 Performance Car magazine where all the specs and details were listed. “Mad Mike emailed back and was over the moon to know it was going back to the way it was, and wanted to be part of the build by sending the graphics. “He had wanted to apply them himself but couldn’t make it down in the time frame so I had my mate Lee from BB Signs apply them. “It took three months of very late nights to restore it with the help of a lot of mates and an understanding partner got up at 2am to help bleed the brakes,” he laughs. A grand reveal of the restored car was held in Timaru last December

at the ‘4 and Rotary South Island Champs 2016’. Stefan then took it to a 4 and Rotary event in Auckland where Mad Mike saw it for the first time since being restored. It ended up being moved to Mad Mike’s own display area to represent the early days of his drift career. It has also featured at shows in Taupo where it won a burnout competition and featured at the Mad Mike Summer Bash at the beginning of the year. “It’s just blown up since finishing the restoration, especially with the music clip featuring the car. It’s been all over the net, invited to displays... It’s been mind blowing and starting to hit home what we have actually achieved,” Stefan says. There are a number of future events in the pipe line where the car will feature, Stephan says. “Watch this space.”

It also highlights the trust, friendship and confidence between the Base and this district as we have seen, very clearly, in recent years with personnel stepping in to help this region in response to our fires and earthquakes.”

Frothing for the win

By Celeste Alexander New Zealand’s latte art champion for 2017 is being sought and Blenheim barista Michael Boyd thinks he has what it takes to win. Michael, aged 23, has been working hard to perfect his latte art skills this week as he prepares to represent the region at the Meadowfresh NZ Latte Art Championship in Auckland this Saturday. Michael is the only local competing and this year will be his fourth entry after previously placing 9th, 7th and 5th. “My goal is to be the number one latte artist in the country then go on to compete at the world champs in June, which is being held in Budapest, Hungary,” he says. The championship involves contestants coming up with a number of designs and having to execute them perfectly in the different categories. Michael says there is an ‘art bar’ round where he will have 10 minutes to create one coffee and can use colour or chocolate as part of his design, providing it’s still drinkable. “There will also be two free-pours and two designer lattes required as well as a final round which includes four free-pours and two designer lattes,” he says. Michael has come up with four ‘harder’ designs than previous years but won’t reveal what they are before the competition. “But to give you an idea, some of the designs have been patterns and animals like dragons, foxes, angels, birds... I’ve also seen Halloween designs and creepy clowns,” he says.

Youth on build-up to crisis weekend By Cathie Bell Fourteen young people taking part in the Youth in Emergency Services programme are building up to a weekend that will test all their newly-learned skills. The YES programme is running for the second time in Marlborough this year, after last year’s suc-

16 and 19, is fully funded by the Government, with equipment provided. Coordinator Ryan Pigou says the course is coming to the end of the programme, and the young people are building up to an overnight ‘scenario’ for them, where all the skills and experience they’ve gained on the course will be tested.

Predator-Free? Dear Ed In suburban Blenheim, I found a dead rat on my front lawn the other morning. I presume it was poisoned with the brodifacoum-based Talon rat poison? Brodifacoum’s a cruel poison taking over 20 days to kill. No creature, even a rat, deserves that treatment. Google up brodifacoum to see how environmentally damaging it is. But I asked a question about that dead rat. Nick Smith and Maggie Barry, environment and conservation

ministers respectively aim to eradicate all predators by 2050. Their tool is aerial bombing of countryside with 1080. Just how do they propose to eradicate rats and mice in towns and cities? What about around farm buildings? It’s “The Impossible Dream” as the song goes. And Smith wants full state control of 1080 bomb-ups removing any say from local councils. What a dreamer, what a dill! What’s more, we pay him. Mortimer Mouse Blenheim

Helping show the way Steve Smith has been a businessman for many years. Now consulting and working in Blenheim, he talks to Cathie Bell about being a mentor to other business people.

Steve Smith has an infectious enthusiasm for life and that extends to his work in Marlborough and in the Pacific Islands helping business people to achieve as much as they can. He’s been a business mentor since 1995, and now offers his services as part of the mentoring service operated by Business Trust Marlborough. “I’ve always been interested in business.” Steve was an insurance broker in Auckland for some years, and combined running his own business with doing a MBA or Masters in Business Administration. “I’ve always had an interest in how businesses run, what makes them tick and operate.” He wasn’t totally conventional in how he operated his business though, having found that Auckland wasn’t where he wanted to live, he moved to Blenheim, while still working in Auckland. Steve cites lifestyle reasons for

his move. “Working remotely, it was good. I had a place up there. “I used to fly up, no bags, had clothes up there and a little car. “I got off the plane and resumed life in Auckland for a little bit. “It worked well. “That whole working remotely, I’d encourage people to do it. “I never had an issue with it, never had an issue at all. “You can get phones put through, it doesn’t matter where you are, and then you make the appointments to see people when you are up in town.” The commute lasted for a couple of years, before Steve sold his business. “I had a guy working for me who was getting better and better at the job. “I moved out to let him run things. The idea was that in time, he’d take over from me. “At the two year mark, he decided it wasn’t for him.”

He worked for the company that bought his business, and then moved on, getting into consultancy and training. “From then on, I lived off my wits.” Now f i r m ly base d i n Marlborough, Steve is mentoring a whole range of businesses here – cafes, small factories, sole traders, and retail. “It’s diverse here – anyone who puts their hands up.” He keeps up some travel, doing some work in the Pacific too, in a teaching role. That has given him a perspective comparing the Western world’s approach with that of the islands. “If a business has a problem, it has got to change. “You can’t keep doing something...Change might be painting a building, it could be a strategic shift. “But the West isn’t that receptive to change, the Pacific is much more flexible, much more recep-

tive to change.” Mentoring is ‘quite fulfilling’, Steve says. “When you get people that are genuinely wanting help, and working to give something new a go, it’s incredibly fulfilling. “You see them blossom. “It doesn’t take a lot to get someone on a different path if they’re receptive to doing it.” Steve says people often think with mentoring, ‘you go out and it’s a huge issue’ to work on. “But more often than not, the issues you deal with are small. “It’s tinkering that you need to do rather than reinventing the wheel. “It’s simple in essence, but incredibly difficult in practice.” • Business Trust Marlborough is looking for more mentors. Anyone interested in becoming a business mentor, or getting the help from one, should contact Business Trust Marlborough on admin@businesstrustmarlborough.co.nz

Boxing event info evening By Celeste Alexander There has been a high interest shown by people wanting to apply for the inaugural ‘Fight for Life’ Life Education charity boxing event in September, so organisers are holding another information evening for the public to find out more. The informat ion even i ng will be held on Tuesday, April 11 at 7.30pm at the Marlborough Boys’ College Hall, and anyone is welcome to attend. Trainer Peter Warren who will be involved in the matching process and providing the training to those chosen to participate says already there has been a lot of interest shown. “I’ve actually had more women than men come forward which is interesting and so far I’m really pleased with the number of applications.

“It would be good for more to come forward though,” he says. Anyone can put an application forward to enter. A panel carefully selects who takes part to make sure it’s safe and fair. There will be eight corporate f ight matches where 16 people are selected and matched according to their skill, fitness, weight and ability. Once selected they will train with Peter to get match ready. Each ‘boxer’ is required to secure a sponsor ($2,500 + GST) and sponsors will have naming rights to their boxer, branding on their singlet and shorts and on the night, and a ringside table for eight. Application forms can be collected from the Co-operative Bank on Queen Street, Blenheim or from the information evening. Applications close April 21.

Gina Botham and Kurt Lindsay were the first to sign up for inaugural fundraising event ‘Fight For Life’ that takes place on September 30. Another information evening has been organised for anyone wanting to find out more about entering.

About 33 members from all over New Zealand attended the conference, which was held at the Clubs of Marlborough in Blenheim. Local association president Barry Rolton says the Chief of the Navy Rear Admiral John Martin was unable to attend the conference because of prior arrangements, but a lunch was organised for him on the Friday beforehand, attended by the association’s national executive council to talk about the navy of today and where it is heading.

The national conference was opened on Saturday morning by Marlborough mayor John Leggett and on Sunday, the council were back into the conference room where the standing president, Trevor Appleton, was re-elected and the new national council was formed. On Saturday, the Ladies were treated to a Drive around Queen Charlotte Sounds, with Lunch at the Slip Inn in Havelock. A Dinner was held on the Saturday night at the Clubs of Marlborough for the conference delegates and observers, and some of the association’s Marlborough members.

Thai New Year and Easter Celebrate Easter and the Thai New Year together by dining out with friends and family at Bamboo Garden and Lemongrass Restaurants in Blenheim. Owner Bu-nga Krataitong says this year’s Thai New Year celebrations coincide with Easter weekend, and to celebrate there will be a set menu, special Thai dishes and even a Thai dancing show. “Thai New Year for us is very special and traditionally celebrated by paying respect to the monks at the temple in the morning, then coming together in the afternoon with family. “There is also significance with water as we believe the water spirit releases the bad from our bodies, so we pour water for our elders who in turn give us blessings,” she says. At Bamboo Garden there will have a set menu ($40pp) available and at Lemongrass Restaurant a special Thai Crispy Fish Salad dish has been created specially for the celebration. In addition to the food, Bu-nga has also organised for a Thai dancing show to be held at both Bamboo Garden Restaurant and Lemongrass Restaurant. The shows will be held from April 13-15 from 6pm. “We chose this time as people who are in town for the

Friendship Force’s 30 years The Friendship Force group is celebrating 30 years of the group in Marlborough with a lunch on Saturday for all past and present members. Group publicity officer Colin King says the Friendship Force of Marlborough was set up in 1987, under the presidency of Averil Watson, and members have visited and hosted similar clubs on other countries over the past 30 years. “Today there are 60 other nations in the world with active Friendship Force clubs, creating many opportunities of hosting and travelling to visiting other international clubs.” He says that, with current president Val McMurtry, the Friendship Force of Marlborough will be celebrating their 30 years of existence at Vintner’s Retreat Restaurant on Rapaura Road, starting noon on Saturday. “To ensure the April 8 celebrations are a success, a special committee has been working behind the scenes to make sure all aspects of the event including the venue and catering details are covered off.

You call us for help

“Also every effort has been made to reach out to former members who have built and sustained the club over the last 30 years. This will ensure all attending will enjoy the comradery and opportunity to follow the growth and development over the last thirty year history of the Friendship Force of Marlborough club.” Friendship Force is an international, non-political, non-sectarian, and non-profit organization enjoyed by people who love to travel and meet new people. Colin says the sole aim of Friendship Force is to foster international friendship and global understanding. This is achieved by means of personal contacts through home hosting. “The length of hosting is usually between 5-7 days. “One can say that they arrive as strangers but leave as friends thanks to Friendship Force International.” He says that if you think that the Friendship Force of Marlborough is something you would like to know more about then visit their website.

Organic vineyard brings in top award Organic winegrowers Dog Point Vineyard have won the Supreme Award at this year’s Cawthron Marlborough Environment Awards for their commitment to conservation with a commercial edge. Dog Point Vineyard near Fairhall, owned by Ivan and Marg Sutherland, is one of the largest organic vineyards in New Zealand, with 110 hectares planted in BioGro-certified vines. The rest of the 200 ha property – nearly half their land - is devoted to native bush, wetlands, open spaces, park-like plantings, orchards, vege gardens and pasture. Grapes and wine are produced organically because the Sutherlands believe the days of heavy chemical use in the industry are numbered and they aim to be up and running with organics before pressure comes on for industry change. While premium winegrowing earns the income, Ivan and Marg are committed to creating a diverse and attractive landscape on the former farm land. Mass plantings of native trees are attracting more tui, bellbird and kereru while introduced bird species, including the vineyard pests, appear to have decreased. The judges say that as more shelter belts are bulldozed to make way for vineyards on the Wairau Plain, the extensive and diverse plant-

ings at Dog Point Estate are truly inspiring. “Their work to create native bush, open parklands, productive orchards and woodlots alongside the vineyard is a great example of biodiversity and commercial success in action,” the judges say. The Cawthron Marlborough Environment Awards are held every two years to showcase businesses and community projects that protect and enhance the environment. The Awards are supported by the Marlborough District Council, Cawthron Institute, Department of Conservation and local sponsors and public field days will be held with the winners over the next few months. The award winners announced at the presentation dinner at the Marlborough Convention Centre in Blenheim last Friday: Marine category: Sanford, Havelock. Farming category: Muller Station, Awatere Valley. Landscape and Habitat Enhancement: Dog Point Vineyards, Fairhall (also the supreme award winner). Business Innovation: Southern Water Engineering, Blenheim. Community Innovation: Nelmac Garden Marlborough, Blenheim. Wine Industry Innovation: Tohu Wines, Awatere Valley.

Wet month drops town ranking By Cathie Bell Blenheim is above Richmond in the sunshine stakes, but behind Tekapo and Whakatane. Weather data collected from the monitoring station at the Grovetown Business Park and collated by Plant and Food scientist Rob Agnew shows sunshine hours in March were 91 per cent of the long-term average, with 200.7 hours recorded. Total sunshine for the first three months of 2017 is 729.0 hours; 98.8 per cent of the long-term average recorded from 1930 to 2016 of 720.1 hours. That is not as sunny as the same period last year. Richmond has been above Blenheim in the sunshine hours rankings, but has dropped this month, Rob says, with the rankings for sunshine totals for the first three months of 2017 being Tekapo, Whakatane, Blenheim, and then Richmond. Soil moisture is higher this March than it was last year, Rob says, reflecting the more regular rain throughout the month. Last month, there was 47.0mm of rain, 108 per cent of the long term average for March of 43.4mm. Rainfall was recorded on 11 days during March, Rob says,

Social media star Lester Chan in Marlborough.

Sunsets ‘so awesome’ Rob Agnew

but six of those days recorded 1.0 mm or less. The highest one day rainfall was 26.0 mm recorded on 11 March. “Although March 2016 and March 2017 recorded almost identical rainfall totals, Marlborough is much less dry at the beginning of April 2017 than it was at the beginning of April 2016. Almost all of the March 2016 rainfall fell on 23 March, which meant that the rest of the month was very dry, whereas in March 2017 the rainfall was spread across a number of days during the month.”

By Cathie Bell Anyone with an interest in the outdoors and the good life should make their way to Blenheim, social media star Lester Chan says. Lester, known as @mrlesterchan with 8500 followers on social media, was in Marlborough last weekend as part of the Choice Hotels chain’s ‘TravelGrammer’ competition, charged with capturing and sharing their assigned region’s most exhilarating experiences, stunning landscapes and ‘Insta-worthy’ gastronomic escapades with their social media followers, in order to build a unique content series that encourages other Kiwis to explore the land of the long white cloud. After tours that included visiting a

vineyard and winery and kayaking on the Wairau Lagoons at sunset, Lester says it’s hard to describe just how ‘awesome and amazing’ Marlborough is. “I had an amazing time out there.” His favourite is ‘definitely the sunsets’, he says, delighted with the image he captured of a kakayer under a fiery sky. “They’re just lovely, the sunsets… I had such a great time, I could barely contain myself.” Born and raised in Singapore, Lester says that since he came to New Zealand three years ago, he has become ‘outdoorsy’ and wants to tell everyone about getting closer to nature in New Zealand’s beautiful places.

Choice Hotels general manager, marketing Matt Taylor says Instagram is a vital part of the company’s marketing strategy, and the campaign will not only help lift the profile of Choice Hotels, but New Zealand tourism in general. The winner of the Choice Hotels NZ TravelGrammer 2017 campaign will be announced mid-April. Any person who follows the @ Choice_Hotels_NZ Instagram page from 24 March 2017 to 18 April 2017 will be entered into the ‘Followers Competition’ and will go in the draw to win one of two short breaks at a Choice Hotels property within New Zealand.

CLEANING SOLUTIONS Autumn the new ‘spring-clean’ Autumn is regarded by the cleaning industry as being the new spring clean. Why? It’s because families and workplaces are back from the summer holidays and into school and work. It’s also the time families prepare for winter by cleaning out woodburners, chimneys and the outside areas. But this does mean a number of inside tasks need attention. Such as cobwebs, leaves in the guttering or blowing in through open windows and

doors, dirty footwear and pets leaving marks on the carpets and flooring. Condensation is another big problem, particularly on window frames this time of year. Talk to your local window cleaning or glass specialists for the best solution. Upholstery and bedding are other areas that need attention after much traffic of family coming in and out from the outdoors. Air your mattress regularly and turn your mattress after the warmer months.

Finally, de-clutter the inside and outside of your home. It doesn’t take much for your home to be overrun with summer sport equipment, games, balls and other summer garden paraphernalia which have kept the family entertained. Take the chance to sort through the various toys, equipment and banish sports shoes to the cupboard for safekeeping and you will be amazed how much more space you feel you have.

Carpet cleaning time As we head from one season into another, now is the perfect time to have your carpets cleaned. Dan Riddell of Superior Carpet Cleaning is a specialist when it comes cleaning, refreshing and removing stains in all types of carpet. This includes dirt, fire and flood damage and stains from carpet, rugs and upholstery. The spring and summer months may have left pollen and other dust allergens embedded in your carpet, not to mention dirty footprints left by family members, so Dan recommends having them cleaned.

This is because autumn is that time of year when allergies increase along with potentially harmful microbes and dust mite allergens, due to the inside heating being turned on, windows closed and inadequate ventilation. He does everything from exit cleans for house tenants to advanced stain treatment and tile and grout cleaning for both residential and commercial. Call Dan at Superior Carpet Cleaning, locally owned and Marlborough’s oldest carpet cleaning company.

Moving tribute for teen

Welcome to the WELCOME TO THE CANCER SOCIETY Cancer Society MARLBOROUGH Marlborough

By Celeste Alexander A moving and emotional tribute was held for Blenheim teenager Charlie Higgins at Eastern States Speedway last Saturday. Charlie who passed away 10 years ago at the age of 13 was a huge fan of speedway and spent most of his life frequenting the track with his mother Trich Dixon, and had his hopes on racing a stock car when he turned 16. A special remembrance race was held in Charlie’s memory in the youth ministock class, which attracted 20 drivers from as far away as Christchurch, Greymouth and Nelson.

This was the largest field of ministocks ever seen at the track, Trich says. “It was a fantastic night and great for Charlie’s 10 year anniversary,” she says. Ken Nell of Donaldson Civil organised and sponsored participation trophies for each of the drivers, and as a surprise for Trich, he put Charlie down as the first entrant and presented Trich with a trophy to take home. “I want to extend a huge thank you to Ken for everything he organised and to all of the ministock drivers and everyone at speedway for their support,” she says.

Sailing trophy stays in Marlborough By Cathie Bell Marlborough college sailors held onto the ‘Top of the South’ trophy, seeing off Nelson sailors at the regional regatta at Queen Charlotte Yacht Club in Picton last weekend. Organiser Christel Hopkins says a record number of college sailing teams competed in Picton Harbour during the regatta, which ran from Thursday to Saturday. There were 14 teams in total from as far as Christchurch and Mt Aspiring competing in the Top of the South regionals, she says. The local teams were represented, by Marlborough Girls’, Marlborough Boys and Queen Charlotte College. Christel says the regatta went well, and the Marlborough Girls’ team made ‘amazing’ progress during the course of the regatta while both Marlborough Boys’ and Queen Charlotte College performed well. They now have to take on some of the North Island big boys at nationals like Kerikeri, Wentworth and Kristin, she says. The college team sailing nationals are held in Algies Bay near Auckland on April 22-28.

The Marlborough Harrier Club is holding its Thursday evening pack and training run or walk tomorrow night, leaving from the clubrooms at 6pm. These are situated at Oliver Park on the corner of Weld and Cleghorn Streets, Redwoodtown. Reflector gear is compulsory. Joggers and walkers regardless of ability are welcome. Everyone is welcome to participate.

Pigeon Racing Blenheim Pigeon Club held its first race of the young bird season from Hanmer Springs on Thursday due to inclement weather being predicted for the weekend. The flock was liberated at 12.10pm as heavy fog at the original race point of Rotherham necessitated a change of venue and time of release, however the birds made fairly good times despite the change and the winning bird was timed in by Nearo Lofts in the Awatere Valley with a speed of 61km/hr, second place to Alister Cooper at Renwick with 59km/hr and third to Two Fishers Loft in Dillon’s Point with 58km/hr. Next came Ian McColm also of Renwick on 57km/hr followed by Chris Bensley in central with 55km/hr.

www.findlaterconstruction.co.nz Jason Clark, David Taylor, Fred Merkin and Richard Bateman of the Marlborough Car Club left yesterday for the DriveSouth Otago Rally which kicks off this weekend. (Absent, Lloyd Owen).

Local drivers heading to the Otago rally By Celeste Alexander What has been dubbed as being the ‘best rally in the Southern Hemisphere’, the DriveSouth Otago Rally is set for this weekend and will see a group of drivers from Marlborough competing. The rally is the first round of the 2017 New Zealand Rally Championship and this year has attracted a record number of entries, 132 cars which is a number not seen in a rally over the past 40 years. The event also incorporates the International Classic Otago Rally, for pre-1982, 2WD cars. Locals Richard Bateman and codriver Jordan Smith, David Taylor and co-driver Pania Huntley, Fred

Merkin and co-driver Sandra Everson, Lloyd Owen and co-driver Jonty Brenssell and Jason Clark and codriver Tracy Clark left yesterday to make the journey down for the event. Each of the drivers will be competing in the 5a class for 4WDs, except for David who will be in the 5b class for 2WD as well as being eligible for the Allcomers rally points and trophies. For Richard it will be a test to see if he can win for the third year in a row in his class. “There are a lot more drivers this year so it will be interesting to see how it goes. Either way it’s going to be a great weekend of rallying,” he says.

According to David, a newcomer to rallying with just two years under his belt, he says it’s great to see the interest coming from the Marlborough Car Club. “It’s cool to have that interest, especially as everyone bar me are in the same class. I’m really looking forward to it,” he says. The rally starts in Dunedin on Friday with a ceremonial start from 5pm and the event features 14 special stages on Saturday and Sunday, with a competition distance of nearly 285km. Of the 132 drivers there are also international drivers taking part including Irish rally star Frank Kelly.

I also asked Simon about the current problems related to safe lead removal. Simon says. “Because there is no lead dust created through sanding, or lead vapour generated by heat guns, lead poisoning is no longer a concern” I asked Simon what the Stripping Roadshow is all about and he said, “The Stripping Roadshow is a DIY paint and varnish stripping exhibition travelling regionally throughout New Zealand.” “The purpose of the Stripping Roadshow is to show Cooper’s stripping any paint or varnish from any surface.” Simon says, the Stripping Roadshow will be in Blenheim this weekend. “We have on exhibition some impressive before and after displays, as well as practical one on one demonstrations.” Come and meet the family, chat to us about your project, bring along some photos of what you want to strip and we’ll select a similar old piece of paint or varnish to strip with you.” But what Simon really wants you to do is actually bring along your project, or a piece of it, no matter how big or small. bring a chair, a drawer, unscrew a window sash, a door, a piece of moulding or even your project car or boat and they will really show you what Cooper’s is capable of doing.

“I was sick of how difficult it was to use the current strippers, and knew sanding was a complete waste of time,” Simon says. “Why sand when the person who made the item, sanded it in the first place? I was determined to make a product that was easy to use and made sanding obsolete.” Simon is Kiwi-born and bred and as a dairy farmer’s son he was taught at a young age to work things out, rather than to accept things as they are. At high school he developed a passion for working with wood and his love of fine furniture began.
