Classic wings

By Cathie Bell One of the biggest events in the Marlborough calendar takes off on Friday and it’ll go off with a bang that evening. Organisers of the Classic Fighters airshow are promising a spectacular show, and there will be a large fireworks display on Friday evening to set off all the aviation excellence on show on the ground and in the air for the rest of the weekend. Continued on page 2 Steadfast, the world’s fastest Yak, makes its debut flight over Blenheim, with owner James Crockett flying. Photo provided by Gavin Conroy, Classic Aircraft Photography.

TWICE WEEKLY

Classic airshow promises unique aviation show Continued from page 1 The Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre hosts the Classic Fighters airshow at Easter every two years, and it draws thousands of people into Marlborough for the three days of the show. Centre marketing manager Rachael Brown says there will be plenty for aviation fans to see, and even those who don’t see themselves as aviation fans will find lots to see and do. Friday will team fireworks and aviation to start the airshow with a bang. The Yealands Classic Fighters’ Marlborough Lines Twilight Extreme kicks off at 4.15pm sharp on Friday with the RNZAF Black Falcons and flies through an array of spectacular machines including a P-40 Kittyhawk, Corsair, the mighty Spitfire and Reno Air Racer, also Steadfast, a Yak30 world speed record holder, making its New Zealand debut, she says. “The afternoon display will be a mixture of formation aerobatics, solo displays by WWII fighters, and of course not forgetting the popular

WW1 Fokker triplanes. “As the sun sets, military skirmishes and the infamous V1 bomb will provide a taste of the ground theatre to come over the Saturday and Sunday. “As day fades into night, the crowd will be entertained by Highly Flammable’s Fire Dancers. “Then at 6.50pm the fireworks begin and it’s musical pyro-style! Presented by Fireworks New Zealand, this promises to be the most spectacular Marlborough Lines Twilight Extreme fireworks display yet.” Rachael says one of the highlights will be the ‘mammoth’ 12 foot Golden Willow star shell weighing in at 9.8kg, towering above the crowd. “This shell is the largest to be fired in the Top of the South for many years.” She says the plans for Friday will make it a great afternoon and evening of entertainment for the whole family with a kids’ Fun Zone, classic cars, merchandise stalls and a selection of world class Marlborough wine, beer and delicious food, rang-

ing from the classic Kiwi pie through to those gourmet delights. Bring a picnic blanket, or a chair and join in the fun.” Tickets are available at the gate, i-SITE or in advance online. Entry for those who purchase the Twilight Extreme only tickets start from 3.30pm, Friday day pass holders can enter from 8am. The classic planes have been giving Marlborough residents a taste of the weekend’s offering, as they do practice flights over the district.

As well as the Steadfast Yak, this week doing its first test flight in preparation for Yealands Classic Fighters was the Omaka-based Griffon-powered Mk.XIV Spitfire. Rachael says this year’s airshow will have three Spitfires taking to the air together, for only the second time south of the Equator since the war era. “The first being at Classic Fighters in 2015 – it will be great to see them in the sky again over the Omaka Airfield.”

Is nurse move valid asks MP By Cathie Bell There are valid questions being asked about the proposal to move district nurses from Wairau Hospital to a new base in the health hub in central Blenheim, Kaikoura MP Stuart Smith says. Stuart confirms he has been approached by constituents upset at the proposed shift. He had a meeting scheduled with new district health board chief executive Peter Bramley but, due to weather issues, that didn’t happen. “That was unfortunate.” Nelson Marlborough District Health Board general manager

strategy, planning, and community Cathy O’Malley says in a written statement last week that health board staff are working hard on finalising new health services to be based in the expanded Marlborough Health Hub, and district nurses are one group of prospective tenants. “We are in the middle of a complex process and will announce the final tenants once we have finalised the hub configuration and fit-out. We are still several weeks away from this point.” There has been concern through Marlborough about the proposal

from staff and patients. Stuart says the district nurses believe the current situation is better than the proposal, but the district health board seems to have a view that a change would be more efficient and better in the community. There are ‘valid questions’ about the proposal, he says, but he says he doesn’t know the answers to them. “I think there is more to it than meets the eye. “I’m not really at the bottom of it. I don’t have all the facts…. I’m not in a position to gauge who’s right at this stage.” MP Stuart Smith

New base commander

By Celeste Alexander As heartbreaking as it was to watch his house go up in flames last Monday night, Richard (Tricky) Knight is remaining positive and wants to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone who has helped him. The Sun met with Richard last Friday and as he sifted through the ashes he spoke emotionally of the hundreds of calls, messages and people he doesn’t know who have all given a helping hand.

Wing commander Berni Pothan took over as Woodbourne base commander at a change of command parade at the air force base yesterday, along with Warrant Officer Annette Walding becoming command warrant officer at the base. The two become the first all-women command team at an Air Force Base. Defence says although Wing Commander Pothan isn’t the first female officer to take a significant lead role on a Base, she is the first to be appointed a Base Commander in the current structure. Likewise, Warrant Officer Walding is not the NZDF’s first female Command Warrant Officer, but this is the first time women have been simultaneously posted into both command positions.

“Honestly, I couldn’t mill a tree big enough to produce a piece of paper long enough to list people who have helped me.” “My phone hasn’t stopped. I’ve been averaging calls every five minutes over the past three days... I can’t keep up with it,” he laughs. Asked where he wanted to begin thanking people, he puts his hands in the air and says ‘I have no idea, there’s too many’. “Honestly, I couldn’t mill a tree big enough to produce a piece of paper long enough to list people who have helped me. “I’ve been so overwhelmed, so emotional and grateful to everyone. “From the police and firefighters, my mates, the speedway community, total strangers who have done things anonymously... I can’t possibly thank you all enough,” he says. Richard spoke of the night he came home to his two storey house engulfed in flames, and although those first three days he says are a ‘blur’, he says so many people leapt into action to help. “The police were fantastic from being there during the fire to one of the patrol cars helping me to search for my dog. “The firefighters were even more amazing. “Seven appliances came out and did such a great job. “To watch them work on a house fire is mind blowing, their team work was incredible.

“One of the firefighters jumped into my truck which was parked beside the house and moved it away from the flames... things like that I am so grateful for.” He says the fire originated in his ‘man cave’ with a projector sitting up on a shelf, left on stand-by, malfunctioned and overheated, burning the shelf and then toppling onto the bed. “The fire pretty much took off once it fell onto the bed.” He says the loud bangs that were heard during the fire were from car parts exploding. “The really loud boom was a drive shaft and the ones after were from gas shock absorbers. “They were for my daughter’s Holden HQ I

had bought for her,” he says. Going forward, Richard says he plans to stay on the property and will be living in a bus that a speedway contact has offered him until a new house is built by the owner. “While I am so grateful to everyone who has given me clothes, food, food for the dogs, vouchers and even lotto tickets, I’m OK for now and don’t have anywhere to put stuff so please pass on the donations to others who need it more. “The generosity shown by so many people is incredibly humbling and I hope that more people in need can receive the same treatment,” he says.

Salmon hearing panel chairman Peter Skelton speaks at the beginnning of the hearings, with panel members Ron Crosby, left, and Alan Dormer listening.

Salmon panel hearings start

2

By Cathie Bell The panel hearing submissions on the Government’s proposal to move up to six salmon farms in the Marlborough Sounds will be bound by resource law requirements, the chairman of the panel says. The panel started hearing public submissions on Monday, and chairman Peter Skelton says while the process to decide the proposal is not the usual Resource Management Act process used to consider plan changes, it is ‘nonetheless’ still a process under that act. That means it is bound to consider the issues that would normally be considered under the act, he says. More than 600 submissions were received during the two-month consultation period, and the panel is to hear from people who wrote 95 of those, asking to be heard by the panel. Before the panel started on Monday, Peter outlined the panel’s approach to the submissions. He emphasised the panel is not the decisionmaker. “The decision-maker in this case is the minister for primary industries.

“The panel task is to read all the comments made on the proposal, to listen and assess all those who’ve said they wish to be heard at these hearings, to report to the minister on those matters and to provide advice to the minister on whether or not the proposal should proceed and if so, in what form. “It is for the minister to decide in light of the panel’s report and assessment.” In developing that advice, the panel will be guided by the relevant clauses of the Resource Management Act, which governs planning decisions, even though the proposal changes are to be made by regulation rather than through the act, Peter says. “The method of promulgating the legal change is not the usual RMA process, it is nonetheless a RMA process. The relevant legislative requirements apply to this proposal.” The first to be heard by the panel on Monday was the Ministry for Primary Industries, and then the Marlborough District Council. The panel is to hear all the submissions in favour of the proposal, and then those that oppose it. Hearings are expected to continue into mid-May.

Road and rail efforts ramp up By Cathie Bell The northern part of State Highway One between Clarence and Kaikoura has been ‘neglected’ since last November’s earthquake, but residents will see work step up now, North Canterbury Transport Infrastructure Recovery stakeholder manager Mike Seabourne says. Mike told the 50 people at the public meeting in Seddon on Monday night that work is ‘ramping up’ and the access road north and south is likely to meet up soon. “That will be a big thing.” Room is being left alongside the repaired road and rail track, but

NCTIR is not building a cycleway, Mike says. “We’ve allowed for space on the side of the road. We’re not building a cycleway, but there is enough room for cycles to get around.” There will also be safe places built for people to park and walk to see the seals and seal colonies along the coast road, he says. There was strong pressure to get the job done, and the road would be open in December, Mike says, with the rail track open earlier. There are now 700 people working on the rebuild of the road and rail rebuild, and people in southern

Marlborough will now see more work happening as work trains and cranes make their way through the district repairing bridges and culverts. Heavy rain has helped bring loose material off cliff faces, but many of the slips still have loose material that needs to be brought down, Mike says. NCTIR is still looking for accommodation for up to 50 workers on the north side of the state highway, he says, but it will be best to have it close to the work site. Places in Clarence and Kekerengu are being looked at now.

Land Information Minister Mark Mitchell, in the Sounds on Friday, with Dr Helen Neil, NIWA national project manager.

Sonar mapping a first for Sounds By Glenise Dreaver The two-year-long sonar mapping of the Marlborough Sounds, which started in late 2016, is a first for New Zealand says NIWA’s national project manager Dr Helen Neil. “It’s nationally very significant, the first time such a large coastal area has been studied and mapped with this level of accuracy,” she says. With over 43,000 hectares to be covered in the investigation, conducted from NIWA’s research vessel Ikatere, goes for 12 hours a day, seven days a week. Helen showed Land Information Minister Mark Mitchell and officials from those organisations the work last Friday. Mark says he is impressed by the quality of the information already produced. A crucial aspect is, he says, making our waterways safer. He saw for himself one of two previously uncharted wrecks and rocks which had never been mapped until now. “This work means there will be high quality data on the updated maps being produced.” All mariners will benefit from these maps, and he sees real economic benefits in the work. “For example, where cruise

companies are doing their risk analyses on where to visit - and they do that very carefully - this area will be prioritised above other areas that haven’t done the work.” Helen says one of the two main areas of focus is hydrographic, focussing on information for mariners. The second is scientific. The survey has already revealed ‘amazing’ underwater features such as 10m high sediment waves and extensive rocky reefs. “And there are freshwater seeps and seafloor depression, as well as active freshwater bubbling in to the Sounds.” Until June, the focus is on gathering data then moving to analysis. Helen said early next year they will be able to provide LINZ with information to begin work on updated marine charts. The scientific reports will be available later and will include identification of differing seabed habitats. That will enable the council to assess the effects of different economic activities. These reports, and maps showing 3D images of the sea floor, are expected to be available late next year.

District Nurses’ move

And more on nurses

Smith’s Dream

Dear Ed, Just read the article re the proposed move of the District Nurse’s base from the hospital to the so called health hub. My first reaction is to ask, is the health board so flush with funds that it is happy to pay out $150,0000 per year when it doesn’t have to? It seems that the nurses are happy to stay where they are and the point that there is ready access to other health professionals at the hospital is very valid. The general manager says the board is meeting with the nurses but are they actually listening to those “on the front line” or is this another fait accompli? Rod Lofthouse Blenheim

Dear Ed, Thank you for the opportunity to comment on the suggestion that the District Nurses will be moved to the Health Hub. We are utterly opposed to such a move for all the reasons that Annie Lomax has described. In her response, Hospital Board’s Cathy O’Malley says that the DHB is busy finalising new health services to be based in the expanded Marlborough Health Hub. Marlborough already has a health hub. It’s called Wairau Hospital and it is a fantastic facility and one that the community has fought hard to keep. That is the place where ‘models of care’ are already well established. It seems to us that someone has done a sweetheart deal to fill an otherwise empty downtown building and in doing so is achieving nothing but duplication and poor service to patients and staff alike at an unnecessary cost to the DHB. This money would be better spent on patient care, not exorbitant rentals. Our view is don’t shift the District Nurses to the Health Hub. Shift the Health Hub to Wairau Hospital where it always was. John and Barb Sinclair Blenheim

Dear Ed, There was a novel called ‘Smith’s Dream’ by NZ writer J K Stead. That came to mind when I read Mortimer Mouse’s excellent letter last Wednesday. Minister for the Environment Nick Smith dreams there are rats of ‘biblical proportions’ as he describes it. In his dream, he is flying aboard his trusty Sopwith Camel dropping jaffas on the rats and mice below aiming to exterminate them. Never mind the rats came here in 1350 with Maori settlers and then about 1800 with European settlers. Never mind food chains and predator/prey relationships were in balance. Waking from his dream Smith is dropping deadly 1080 poison. He might as well drop jaffas because he will not exterminate every rat. The real story is the 10% surviving rats will breed quickly and as Landcare Research has found, will mushroom within 3 or 4 years to four times their original number. When he lands in his dream, the rat plague he has caused will tear his beloved Sopwith Camel to shreds. Smith’s Dream has become a nightmare. Worse still, the laughing stock of voters when he gets voted out of his safe Nelson seat come September. Poor Nick. Reginald Rodent Blenheim

More on nurses Dear Ed, I just want to give my support to our District Nurses in not wanting to shift from Wairau Hospital. As I am having a long recovery from a recent operation, I have a visit every day from District Nurses. They are wonderful, very caring and supportive of my problems. If they want to stay where they are at Wairau, the Health Board should listen to what they have to say. It makes sense to be where they can have daily contact with different specialists on a personal level if required. Also we have a wonderful new hospital with easy access and parking and all on the one level. ‘Why would the Board want to fix something that is not broken’. I hope common sense will prevail. Grapes squashed by kids

McKenzie Ho and Sophie Ditford crush the grapes.

By Cathie Bell The pre-schoolers at St Mary’s Preschool got up close and personal with grapes, after some bins of sauvignon blanc grapes were brought in last Friday. McKenzie Ho and Sophie Ditford were among the children who got to tread the grapes to celebrate the harvest. McKenzie says the grapes are fun to squash. They feel nice on her feet but they are really cold when there is a lot of juice, she says. Principal Hazel Shapcott says some of the children’s parents are involved in the grape harvest and they work long hours, so it is good for the children to learn more about the grapes and what goes into growing and harvesting them. “It’s nice to celebrate harvest season.”

Denise Stephens and Debbie Carter from the Marlborough Artisan Market are getting ready for an Easter market.

Easter market pops up By Cathie Bell The Marlborough Artisan Market is kicking off its winter season with a pop-up market at Brayshaw Park on Easter Saturday, hoping to provide entertainment to some of the thousands of people who will be in Marlborough for the Classic Fighters airshow. Organisers Debbie Carter and Denise Stephens say the market stalls will be placed on a grassed area between the Marlborough Museum building and the Brayshaw Park railway station. That should be a good position as the

Blenheim Riverside Railway is running trains regularly throughout the day to and from the Omaka air show and also into Blenheim central business district and back. Debbie says the market will run from 10am until 2pm, and stallholders are hoping forecast rain will hold off or bypass Blenheim altogether. During the summer, the artisan market is based at the Wynen Street carparks, but during winter, it operates pop-up markets at different places around town.

Thai New Year and Easter Celebrate Easter and the Thai New Year together by dining out with friends and family at Bamboo Garden and Lemongrass Restaurants in Blenheim. Owner Bu-nga Krataitong says this year’s Thai New Year celebrations coincide with Easter weekend, and to celebrate there will be a set menu, special Thai dishes and even a Thai dancing show. “Thai New Year for us is very special and traditionally celebrated by paying respect to the monks at the temple in the morning, then coming together in the afternoon with family. “There is also significance with water as we believe the water spirit releases the bad from our bodies, so we pour water for our elders who in turn give us blessings,” she says. At Bamboo Garden there will have a set menu ($40pp) available and at Lemongrass Restaurant a special Thai Crispy Fish Salad dish has been created specially for the celebration. In addition to the food, Bu-nga has also organised for a Thai dancing show to be held at both Bamboo Garden Restaurant and Lemongrass Restaurant. The shows will be held from April 13-15 from 6pm. “We chose this time as people who are in town for the

Diners will love the choice of dining experiences and menu options at the Taylor’s Bar & Eatery. Located upstairs at the Clubs of Marlborough, the newly launched restaurant has taken relaxed dining to a new level with its new decor and layout. Looking to enjoy a relaxed sit down meal? The Taylor’s Bar & Eatery has an elegant dining area with a specialised menu offering local produce as well as exclusively sourced ingredients. Perhaps you are looking for a quiet place to enjoy a casual drink and light meal? Separate from the seating area and located beside the restaurant’s bar is an area screened off with purpose built bar leaners. This area extends to outside on the balcony, it’s sheltered from the weather and overlooks the Taylor River. For the first time the restaurant now has its own stand alone bar offering premium products that are not offered anywhere else in the Clubs of Marlborough. The one exclusive beer that the bar offers is Heineken on tap, Clubs CEO Lee Davis says. “We are one of two outlets in Blenheim

offering Heineken on tap as well as wines exclusive to the Taylor’s, and we display a wine of the month at the entrance to the restaurant,” Lee says. There are two menus offered at the Taylor’s Bar & Eatery. One offers light meals that can be enjoyed in the bar area, and the other is more suited for a sit down dining experience. There is a tantalising selection of beef, chicken, seafood, lamb and pork to choose from, all cooked and plated to perfection. The beef has been sourced exclusively for the restaurant and is Hereford Prime Beef that is 100 percent naturally aged, grass fed and GE free. Finish the meal off with one of the tempting desserts on offer and polish off the evening with a glass of Marlborough wine or cold beer. Book your next dinner date, group or function with the Taylor’s Bar and Eatery or simply relax in the bar and outside balcony area.

Train rides fund day out for Ward School By Celeste Alexander The Picton foreshore was alive with giggling, squealing students from Ward School who enjoyed a fun day of activities thanks to the Picton Society of Model Engineers. Operating under the Picton Rail and Sail, the society raised $2500 in November of last year and decided to donate it to an earthquake appeal benefiting Seddon and Ward.

Society president Graham Low says members wanted to find something unique to spend the money on, so decided it should be used to give Ward School students a fun day out. The money was used to cover transport, activities, and fish and chips for lunch. The first thing the students wanted to do was explore the new water park before heading to the Eco World Aquarium then to the

railway for some train rides and model boating. Ward School principal David Sullivan says the day was greatly appreciated by students and staff. “It was such a nice gesture. The weather had rained us off the day we had originally planned and the kids were so upset, so we have seized the opportunity to come out today. “It’s been a lot of fun and their smiles say it all,” he says.

Ward School students frolicked in the new water park at Picton’s foreshore area.

Bill Clamp from Southern Water Engineering and some of Marlborough Football’s younger players.

Marlborough Football general manager Andrea Smith-Scott says it’s ‘a huge help and makes putting up the nets a lot easier’. “We really appreciated the offer, and to have them all fixed before another busy season of football was just great”. “Affiliation fees only cover a very small portion of our expenses so we rely heavily on the generosity of local funders and businesses, and I would like to thank our major sponsors Mayfield Motorworld and Floorpride, and the many other businesses like Southern Water Engineering, Guthrie Bowron, Versatile Homes & Buildings, PGG, Redwood Tavern and Pak n Save, that also contribute to Marlborough Football. Without them, we would find it very difficult to operate.”

Pigeon Club Blenheim racing pigeon clubs’ birds were released at Rotherham on Sunday for the second race of the season, and at long last the weather played its part in allowing for a fairly fast race home for the flock. With multiples of the birds arriving together at their individual destinations, speeds were very close with Alister Cooper at Renwick into first place with a speed of 75.5km/hr followed closely by the other Renwick loft of Ian McColm on 74.8 km/hr. Then came Chris Bensley into third on 73.2 km/hr and very closely behind Two Fishers loft at Dillon’s Point with 73.1 km/hr.

Jorja Bacchus finished first in the girls 14 and under section.

Corsica demonstrates Paddon’s never-give-up approach

Goalpost hand up Never-give-up By Cathie Bell Southern Water Engineering has given Marlborough Football a hand up by repairing all hooks on the goal posts for holding the football nets up. Bill Clamp and a team from the irrigation engineering company got the repairs done last week, and junior footballers celebrated the repairs last weekend. Bill says that at Southern Water Engineering ‘we genuinely believe in getting involved and making a difference in our community’. “When Marlborough Football mentioned the difficulties that they had in cable-tying the nets to the goals because the hooks were broken, we saw right away an opportunity to help – and were happy to volunteer.”

Wednesday April 12, 2017

Last weekend’s Tour of Corsica world rally championship race was ‘a learning weekend’ for Kiwi rally star Hayden Paddon and Blenheim-based co-driver John Kennard. The duo didn’t achieve the results they were looking for, but with a sixth-place finish and a move into eighth place on the drivers’ championship points-table, there were several positives to take from it. “It’s been a learning weekend for us, but we have to find the positives. Even if the end result doesn’t show it, we have been competing closer to the front this weekend and shown an improvement from last year’s Tour de Corse.” The first day of the three-day race was frustrating for the two as they were ‘ making good steps forward’ with the driving, but ‘confused’ as to why they couldn’t produce the stage they wanted. “There’s obviously still plenty to learn but we’re making progress,” Paddon says. “We must now look ahead to the next rally, the start of a run of five on gravel. We should have a good road position for Argentina so I’m looking to feature more prominently in the next events.”

Rangers City are Early Leaders Rangers City find themselves at the top of the table in the early stages of division one Marlborough Football. This after crafting a 3-2 victory over Blenheim Valley United where Keagan Mortimer scored the winner with five minutes to play in an otherwise even encounter. It was even between club mates Central and Central Pirates, however Pirates would probably feel like it’s a loss. A Bryce Smith header in the last ten minutes brought Pirates level after a Stephen McCaa goal put Central in front. The other game in the first division went the way of Blenheim Valley Masters with Mike Croad scoring twice to beat Blenheim Valley Cobras 4-2. Division two featured another close encounter with Clubs of Marlborough Rangers beating Picton Panel and Paint 1-0. Matt Millar turned up at the back post to convert a Paul Alexander cross in the first few minutes of the game. Blenheim Valley were far too good for Rangers Masters winning 6-0. And in the third division Rangers Development and Trojan Spartans drew 3 all while Rangers United beat Picton Crow Tavern 3-2.
