Airshow saved by sunshine Continued from page 1 Marketing manager Rachael Brown says it was ‘a little scary’ in the lead up to the event due to the rain and flooding around the region, but the crowds still turned out and enjoyed what was on offer. “Given that it could have been awful, it wasn’t. We were saved by sunshine and sawdust,” she laughs. “The people that came enjoyed themselves and in general the crowd was really pleased with the show. “We had an amazing team of volunteers and workers who did an amazing job, and thanks to the efforts put in by everyone involved including the pilots it was a fantastic event,” she says. The three-day event kicked off Fr iday and saw the

Marlborough Line’s Twilight Extreme held at the evening with a spectacular fireworks display put together by Kelvin Holdaway and his team. This was followed by blue sky and fine weather for Saturday and Sunday which enabled the pilots to put on some spectacular aerobatics and mock airfield attacks, while the Ground Theatre entertained the crowds with battle re-enactments. “The Ground Theatre is unique to Omaka and combined with the array of aircraft meant it was a combination that came together well. We were missing some aircraft due to weather challenges but in general the crowd was pleased with what was there,” The P-40 Kittyhawk was a crowd pleaser at the Yealands Classic Fighters Omaka Airshow. Family in ground theatre battle By Celeste Alexander Members of the Johnston family came together at the Yealands Classic Fighters Omaka Airshow to take part in the Ground Theatre display as re-enactors. Bruce Johnston, Kathryn Johnston and Gus Johnston say people were ‘intrigued’ that one family was representing both sides of World War One and Two. “When friends saw us taking part in the Ground Theatre they smiled and said ‘Ah hah, keeping it all in the family,’” Kathryn laughs. The family had a great uncle who lost his life in 1917 to a German bullet. Kathryn says they are ‘not

quite sure that he is not turning in his grave knowing his great nephew is portraying the enemy in ground theatre battles’. “We are not glorifying any of the wars, rather, respectfully remembering those from all sides who sacrificed so much. “The younger generations coming through need to know that conflict has many sides. Wars have taken place and we all try to make sense out of the ‘how’ and ‘why’ and can we do anything to prevent the same thing in the future,” she says. The family enjoyed meeting many of the older generation who stopped to chat with them

during the three day show. “It was a real treat, especially those who had served in overseas postings. They were keen to pass on their knowledge and were thrilled to think that the majority of the re-enactors had done their homework and most of their uniforms and equipment were correct in every detail, Kathryn says. “You get a real feeling of ‘camaraderie’ existing between all the re-enactment groups, just as it would have been during those times of war. “Fun and friendship, with a little bit of respect and knowledge is gained along the way from historical events that took place many years ago.”

Fighter to make professional debut

By Celeste Alexander World champion fighter Brayden (Dr Bray) Graham will be heading to Australia next month to make his much anticipated debut as a professional fighter. Last year Brayden became the International Mixed Martial Arts Federation amateur world champion and has now set his sight firmly on winning his upcoming bout against Australian Paul Loga in what will be his first professional fight. Paul is a season veteran and former XFC amateur champion with four pro fights under his belt. The Pro Flyweight bout takes place on May 20 at the Logan Metro Sports Centre in Crestmead, Queensland. Brayden says he’s looking at this fight as a ‘good challenge’. “Most people match with a debuter for their debut, but he’s the one who is keen so I’ve got a tough fella to make it a bit more interesting. “He’s an Australian champ in the

amateurs so it’s going to be a good challenge,” he says. In preparation Brayden has been intensively working with Brazilian Jiu Jitsu trainer Marcelo Lopes as well as a team in Auckland he visits once a month. “My main coach is Marcelo and in Auckland there’s a couple of pro fighters I spar with. “Marcelo has been making adjustments to me accordingly, feeding me with useful info and positive reinforcement. The good thing about Marcelo is that he won’t pretend you are doing well, he will tell you and fix it, which makes me confident. “I’m training on average 12 times a week which is close to 20 hours in total. I’m still working 40-50 hours a week with Kustom Fitness so it’s been pretty busy,” he says. With only a couple of kilos to drop before the fight Brayden says it’s nothing like the training he faced for last year’s amateur world championship in Vegas. “I’ve only got a couple of kilos

DHB still mum on district nurses’ move By Cathie Bell Decisions on where to locate Blenheim’s district nurses have yet to be made, a Nelson Marlborough District Health Board spokeswoman says. The spokeswoman says health board general manager of strategy, planning and community Cathy O’Malley confirms there is ‘no new information to

add at this stage’. In a written statement from three weeks ago, Cathy says that health board staff are working hard on finalising new health services to be based in the expanded Marlborough Health Hub, and district nurses are one group of prospective tenants. “We are in the middle of a complex process and will

Cathy O’Malley.

announce the final tenants once we have finalised the hub configuration and fit-out. “We are still several weeks away from this point.” There has been concern through Marlborough about the proposal to move the district nurses from a purpose-built facility at Wairau Hospital to the health hub in Queen Street in central Blenheim.

Former district nurse Annie Lomax spoke out on behalf of former colleagues in the Sun a fortnight ago, saying district nurses could see no benefit in the move from the hospital to the health hub. Annie says there should be more consultation with them and the community. “I don’t think the public has been told anything.”

By Cathie Bell Work is starting now on the stopbank alongside Snowden Crescent that threatened to break in heavy rain last week, the Marlborough District Council says. About 40 households in Islington spent Thursday night on tenterhooks after the council warned the earthquake-damaged stopbank was under pressure. Assets and services manager Richard Coningham says the stopbank was to have been repaired last week, but the scheduled work was put on hold when heavy rain was forecast. “Because rains were coming, we decided not to pull apart the stopbank in case the river got higher. That was a wise decision in hindsight because the waters came.” More than 60 projects along the district’s rivers and other areas have been identified

after last November’s earthquake, and they have been prioritised in order of urgency, Richard says. That meant stopbanks in Grovetown and Spring Creek were done first, and the Islington one is next, he says. “This one is next on the list, but Cyclone Cook arrived before we could get to it.” Richard says contractors started work on it yesterday, now the water has receded and dry weather is forecast. “Everybody is fairly comfortable with what’s happening.” There are no reports of major issues in other areas, he says. The rivers department staff worked through Thursday night making sure everything was okay with the rivers, Richard says, and Civil Defence were ‘on the ready’ in case the water got higher.

Electric cars rolling into town

By Cathie Bell A fleet of at least 12 electric cars will roll into town tomorrow as part of a promotion of the growing influence the electric car movement has. The fleet, including some top-end Teslas, will be on display at Liz Davidson Place between 11am and 12.30pm. Blenheim promotor Liza Herkt says the cars are on their way from Bluff to Wellington, and there will be a good range of different types of electric vehicle for people to look at tomorrow morning.

“It’ll be a really good show.” Charge NZ and the Better New Zealand Trust are building a network of electric vehicle charge stations around the country, with one planned for Havelock later this year, Liza says. She hopes the Marlborough District Council will look at putting a charge station in the Blenheim central business district, the way many other councils have. “All the car manufacturers are building them now, so you know they’re going to be a long-term thing… The momentum is there.”

Tough days for rail By Cathie Bell The Riverside Railway team is offering refunds to anyone who missed out when the train was out of action on Saturday. Riverside Railway president John Orchard says the Blenheim Riverside Railway has had a difficult 10 days with two floods covering the lower section of the line into Beaver Station in central Blenheim, making this popular line unuseable over Easter. The high flood flow in the Taylor River also made the branch line to Omaka unuseable on Good Friday. The train carried people from Brayshaw Park to the Classic Fighters airshow on Saturday morning, John says, and then a loco broke an axle and blocked the line in

the afternoon. The line was finally reopened in the early evening and all went well on Sunday, he says. “We wish to apologise to those who were inconvenienced by any of these disruptions to our services. “Unfortunately our wonderful team of volunteers is unable to control the weather, or unexpected faults with our fleet of Heritage locomotives.” John encourages people who missed out on Saturday to visit the railway for refunds. He congratulated the Classic Fighters Airshow for ‘creating another fabulous event for the benefit of Marlborough, and their coordination of a huge volunteer team’. “Well done.”

Odd Finance Ministers Don’t move nurses

Dear Ed, I was surprised at the appointment of Steven Joyce as finance minister. He was a would-be vet but was forced to go for a degree in zoology. I can’t see the connection between zoology and finance. But then looking at past finance ministers, land surveyor Bill Birch was a finance minister. Labour’s Bob Tizard had a BA and Michael Cullen was a history teacher. Further back Bill Rowling was a school teacher with a BA. Strange because in the same

Labour cabinet was accountant Mick Connelly. Wouldn’t he have been a logical finance minister? So I guess no wonder NZ is heavily in debt arguably bankrupt. But then accountants like Muldoon with heavy borrowing and Roger Douglas with his disastrous “reforms” did no better. So perhaps there’s hope for Steven Joyce with his zoology background. It sure is a weird world. Don Coyote Blenheim

Dear Ed, Whilst we are fortunate enough not to have recently required the services of the district nurses, we are more than a little puzzled as to why the Nelson Marlborough District Health Board can entertain the idea of moving, at considerable cost, this service to the Health Hub. Wairau hospital was purpose built approximately seven years ago, with all the consultants and staff employed to design and build this facility, how can it in such a short space of time be now not suitable? We do not accept lack of transport to be an issue. Free bus service every hour 9am-3pm and St John shuttle service for appointments with the option of reduced rates on taxis for many elderly and those with impaired mobility. People who do not have private vehicles would still need to use an alternative means to get to the ‘Hub’. Please Nelson Marlborough District Health Board, stop dreaming, listen to the nurses, the people who work at the coal face, and give them the support to do their work without any extra hassles. Yes, computers do slow down over time, this is quite natural and the good news is that it can be remedied. Just like a car computers need a certain amount of maintenance which if not done will lead to “slooow computer” syndrome. District nurses Dear Ed, I too agree that the District Nurses should stay at Wairau Hospital for support when they need it. They do a wonderful job caring for patients. Last year I had surgery on my forehead and needed to attend the nurses department for six weeks. I had a big bandage on my head. One wouldn’t want to be walk-

ing around town looking like that, whereas at the hospital it is part of the place. Also where is the parking going to be? Free of charge we hope! Don’t fix what isn’t broken. Do you really think the heads at the top will listen to what the public and nurses really want? L Worthington Blenheim

More on nurses Dear Ed, I think it is about time the Nelson Marlborough District Health Board started asking patients what their feelings are about shifting the District Nurses to the Marlborough Health Hub. My husband is going to the hospital twice a week at the moment for wound dressing changes. Sometimes it is hard to find a park at the hospital, what is it going to be like in the centre of town? The hospital has a mini shower for washing wounds before dressing, are they going to have

one there? I thought money was short, so why spend what you haven’t got on a shower when there is already one available? It was your choice to go into the Hub and you expected everyone to agree with the decision. Listen to the District Nurses who do a wonderful job, because at the end of the day it is them who have to work there, not someone in Nelson sitting behind a desk. Garvon Blenheim

Support for nurses Dear Ed, I write in support of former district nurse Annie Lomax’s concerns over the establishment of another Health Hub in Blenheim. We already have an excellent Health Hub in Blenheim. It’s called the Wairau Public Hospital and is: - Situated pretty close to Blenheim’s population - Has adequate parking (which is perhaps not the case with the proposed Hub). - Is already fully equipped with receptionists, communications, etc and incurs no rental costs.

- Is adjacent to all other medical services. - Already has a management structure in place – perhaps the bureaucrats would like to create yet another one? Why finance a further Hub, with the second one probably not as good as the existing one ? The reasons for NOT duplicating Hubs appear blindingly obvious to us. We would welcome the opportunity to be enlightened by hearing the Authority’s compelling reasons for duplication. Poor Old Tax Payer Blenheim

Work has started on repairing rail bridges, like this one south of Clarence.

Care needed as trains start to run By Cathie Bell The entire transport corridor between Blenheim and Waipara is a rail and road construction site, KiwiRail warns. KiwiRail group general manager network services Todd Moyle says people have to treat all railway lines as dangerous with trains due at any time. “The public and KiwiRail’s neighbours will need to be careful around level crossings again. “Hi-rail vehicles - trucks that go on rail - and work supply trains will be moving up and down the line constantly. We should all treat the corridor as ‘live’”.

“All those travelling in the area need to take care on both the road and rail as we come into winter, as the entire transport corridor between Blenheim and Waipara is a rail and road construction site.” Todd says the company is ‘pleased with the progress we’re making’. “Getting to this point means the thousands of hours of design and construction work by the crews has paid off,” he says. “The earthquake-damaged Main North Line has been a huge challenge for KiwiRail and NCTIR crews to repair and this scale of rail reconnection hasn’t happened here since the lines were built.”

Wasp battle called off By Cathie Bell The assault on Picton and Waikawa’s wasp population has been called off for a year after bad weather has kept wasp numbers down. The Kaipupu Point Mainland Island Society had planned a Picton and Waikawa-wide wasp control programme using wasp-specific poison Vespex, but wasp numbers haven’t got high enough this year for the programme to work properly. Kaipupu Point project co-ordinator Rachel Russell says the decision was made last week to hold off the trapping programme for a year. “The wasp numbers are not coming up to the level we wanted, we had to call it off. “The weather has affected things, it’s definitely at fault.” However, planning for the programme to happen next February is underway now, and enthusiasm for the project is high, she says. “Public reaction has been fantastic… I was out on my bike delivering flyers to houses about it and the calls started coming in while

I was literally still on my bike. It’s pretty amazing.” The society holds permits to use waspspecific poison Vespex on Kaipupu Wildlife Sanctuary and have an application being processed at the Department of Conservation to use it on the Wedge as well, and next year, it will expand throughout Picton and Waikawa, with people having wasp traps in their backyards, and also for volunteers to help lay traps in public and council land around the towns. “We think it’s pretty important. “It will make a big dent when we get there, and will hopefully improve things for the birds and everything else.” The group is lucky to have all the funding it needs for the wasp eradication project, Rachel says, having donations from a local trust and support from Marlborough District Council, Port Marlborough and the Department of Conservation as well as Te Atiawa.

Show your children how to properly wash their hands to help prevent the spread of germs this winter.

Prevent the spread of germs Viruses and illnesses can be caught all year round but particularly during winter the run-of-the-mill cold can affect the whole family. As it spreads from one family member to the other, it can cause days being missed from school and work, sleepless nights and other worse symptoms. If you notice you or your child sniffing, coughing or hot with a fever, there are some things you can do to try to prevent the cold from spreading.

Wash your hands. You’ve heard it many times before, but washing your hands is the single most important way to stop the spread of colds. A large percentage of infectious diseases are spread by touch, they get on the hands and from there into the eyes and mouth. When you wash your hands, do it thoroughly. Use soap and water and scrub for a minimum of 20 seconds. When you’re not near a sink, a hand sanitizer that’s at least 60 per cent alcohol is a good

substitute. Cover your nose and mouth. Most of us were raised to cover our mouths and noses with our hands when we sneezed or coughed. Instead, use the crook of your elbow or a tissue. That way, the cold germs won’t get onto your hands and spread. Disinfect. Cold germs can live on surfaces for hours. Consider disinfecting areas like tabletops, doorknobs, remote controls, and toys. Use a disinfecting spray or wipe.

Immune boosting foods Fight off colds and the flu virus this winter by adding any of these immuneboosting superfoods to your diet. Carrots. This root vegetable contains high amounts of beta carotene which the body converts into vitamin A. Vitamin A is a key nutrient in immune function, helping to protect against infection and reduce the risk and duration of respiratory illness by keeping our lungs healthy. Garlic. Garlic has been used for thousands of years in the treatment of illness and disease. Some experts promote eating two to four whole cloves of raw garlic per day as a natural health supplement. However it’s believed consuming between one to two cloves of garlic daily offers the same benefits to fight off a cold. For those who don’t like the taste or smell of raw garlic, an odorless supplement can be taken several times a day. Natural yogurt. Natural plain yogurt contains probiotics, the friendly bacteria that are essential for good gut health. Probiotics boost immunity by protecting against viruses that enter via the digestive tract. Fennel. This licorice tasting winter vegetable offers more than just a unique tang. Fennel is low in calories yet high in the phytonutrient anethole, which may help boost the immune response. Fennel, like celery is a member of the parsley plant family however compared to its cousins, it contains much higher levels of vitamin C. Fennel can be eaten raw in salads or cooked in a stir fry or baked with a roast dinner. Tangelo. A cross between a tangerine

and a pomelo, the tangelo is one of winter’s best citrus fruits. Similar to oranges, tangelos contain high levels of vitamin C. Salmon. Salmon is one of the few dietary sources of vitamin D. Beetroot. Beetroot is packed with beneficial phytochemicals and antioxidants which protect the immune system by fighting off destructive free radicals, molecules which harm healthy cells and their DNA. Eggs. Once considered off limits due to their cholesterol content, eggs are back on our good list and with good reason. Eggs provide an excellent source of protein, B vitamins, vitamins A, D and zinc. Protein is essential in supporting a healthy immune system. The body used protein as fuel to make antibodies that attack foreign invaders and prevent against infection. Dark chocolate. Cacao-based dark chocolate is one of the best natural sources of antioxidants, iron, magnesium and zinc. Zinc, an important trace mineral, is important for immune function.

Show your support and donate on Poppy Day.

Poppy Day Appeal Support service personnel on April 21 This year, the 21st of April will the RSA’s 95th Poppy Day. Ever since it’s official launch in 1922, Poppy Day has continued to be the longest running street appeal in New Zealand - something the RSA is very proud of. This means that for 95 years, the RSA has been raising money for the sole purpose of helping past and present service personnel who need it most. These vital funds support the needs of New Zealand’s 41,000 veterans and their families, the focus of this year’s RSA Poppy Appeal. Recognising and responding to the needs of veterans, especially those members of the military who have served in recent deployments around the world, was a key theme of the national launch of the 2017 Poppy Appeal. This support includes providing a wide range of help to the veterans and their families coping with everything from health impacts, the effects of Post-Traumatic Stress Illness (PTSI) and other conditions brought on by service, help with transitioning to civilian life or financial aid in times of hardship. New Zealand now has 41,000 veterans – the most at any time since the end of the Second

World war. Many Kiwis would be surprised to learn that nearly three quarters of those veterans served in overseas deployments since the Vietnam War. This year, there will be a variety of ways for New Zealanders to make a donation throughout the week of the Poppy Appeal. Members of the public can support the appeal by making a donation to a Street Appeal collector on Friday 21 April. Donations can also be made at the ANZ Blenheim branch, New Zealand Post branches and on the weekend of April 22 and 23 at Bunnings Warehouse branches across the country. Z stations will also have the special car poppies for sale and there will be a range of digital giving options including text donations (people can contribute $3 by texting POPPY to 4662), or online at www.rsa.org. nz/donation. The RSA needs your help so that it can keep doing what it does best, support its service community. Please give generously during the 2017 Poppy Appeal.

Marlborough Mayor John Leggett and partner Anne Best.

Mayor feels privileged By Cathie Bell Last year’s 7.8 magnitude earthquake is the ‘defining event’ for this council, Marlborough mayor John Leggett says. Talking to The Sun after his first six months in office, John says the earthquake has not only caused a lot of work and heartache for the district, it has helped build a good relationship with central government, Kaikoura MP Stuart Smith, and local businesses through the Marlborough Chamber of Commerce. “They have a similar commitment to the region.” The earthquake came a month after he was elected as mayor, and John says it was ‘pretty defining’. “It created a lot of additional work and layers of work, but I think we have come through it very well.” Elected on a platform of ‘strong leadership’, John says that is coming through with the

council working well together and quality work being produced. “The test is how we are operating as a council. I’m quite satisfied we have a good vibe around the council table.” He says it is important ratepayers see the council, not just the mayor. “Councillors should be acknowledged for their work… It’s not just about me. “We’re a united council and we should be making that obvious.” That means councillors playing a bigger role at public events, rather than the mayor doing everything, John says. “I’ve been photographed more in the past six months than I have in the past 60 years.” John says the job of mayor is ‘better than I thought’. “One thing I can say, it is a privilege to be in the position I’m in. I do treat it as a privilege and remind myself all the time.”

Kaikoura MP’s bill drawn too By Cathie Bell Kaikoura MP Stuart Smith has had his private members’ bill to amend credit union regulations introduced into Parliament. The bill proposes changes to the Friendly Societies and Credit Unions Act 1982, and is scheduled to have its first reading in the next private members’ sitting day. Stuart says the current law, passed in 1982, is inefficient and no longer suitable for credit unions operating today.

“This bill will update these regulations, and bring them into line with other financial institutions, allowing credit unions to conduct business more effectively. “The amendments will improve credit unions processes, reducing the minimum number of union members needed for an association of credit unions from seven to two, and permitting unions to make loans to small and medium enterprises related to members of that credit union.”

Picton and Waikawa sewerage upgrade Work is set to begin to reduce the amount of raw sewage being discharged into Picton Harbour. Stages two and three of a major upgrade to the town’s 85-year-old sewerage system will begin in mid-May, the Marlborough District Council says. Contractors will be replacing main sewerage pipes and pump stations between Dublin and Ranui Streets, and building a new bypass treatment facility to treat any excess sewage that can’t be processed at sewage treatment plant. The two stages – worth $19.45m – will service nearly 2500 properties in Picton and Waikawa and provide capacity for population growth, council projects engineer Bruce Oliver says. The work is expected to take 12 months. By starting now, Bruce says, the council and contractors hope to minimise the impact on visitors in summer.

Contractors will begin at Dublin Street and head ‘upstream’ to a point along Waikawa Road near Ranui Street. “This is a major improvement to Picton and Waikawa’s sewerage system and will greatly improve the frequency, duration and volume of sewage that overflows into Queen Charlotte Sound. “The upgrade will lead to an improvement in water quality and the local marine environment, and reduce the risk to the public’s health.” Bruce says the work follows a major upgrade to Picton and Waikawa’s new water treatment plant at Speeds Road, which has now been commissioned. “Council has invested significantly into upgrading Picton and Waikawa’s infrastructure, and this project will help to ensure the town’s services can manage future population growth.”

Origin bill good way to finish By Cathie Bell Marlborough-based Green MP Steffan Browning is leaving Parliament on a high note. His private members’ bill to make it compulsory to label food with its country of origin was pulled from the ballot and introduced into Parliament last week, before passing with the support of all political parties except one. The bill has now gone to select committee and is open for public submissions. Private members’ bills are proposed law changes put forward by MPs, usually Opposition MPs, that may not have Government support. Any MP can propose a law change, and they go into a ballot, relying on being drawn to be considered. Steffan says he is delighted his country of origin labelling bill has been drawn and passed its first reading. He has been campaigning on the issue since he arrived in Parliament nine years ago, he says. “It’s slow progress.” He had been pushing the select committee to include country Green MP Steffan Browning in Parliament after his of origin labelling in the Food private members’ bill passed its first reading. Bill and then the Food Safety “I didn’t realise how lucky it would be.” Amendment Bill, when he heard Steffan says his one frustration is that his private members’ bill had been selected. it is unlikely the bill will pass before the The proposal is supported by industries such as the pork, seafood, and horticulture election, but he hopes the new government industries, he says, and even the Govern- will continue to support it then, given the overwhelming support the public has for ment’s MPs voted for it to pass. “The private members’ bill was a backstop, the issue. in memoriam CAMPBELL, Beverly: 07/05/1938 – 20/04/2016. A huge hole has been left in our lives when one year ago we lost our very dearly loved and cherished mother, respected mother-in-law, ever loving Nana and Great Nana. Tired and weary you made no fuss, you tried so hard to stay with us. You suffered so much and told so few, you never deserved what you went through. To hear your voice, to see you smile, to sit and talk to you a while, to be together in the same old way, would be our greatest wish today. Dearly missed every day. Barbara, Sheryl & Rob, Colleen, Gavin & Dee, Wendy & Pat and all her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Osteopathy Awareness Week runs from April 16-22.

Focus on osteopaths this week Osteopaths across New Zealand are joining forces this month to increase awareness of their profession and its contribution to global healthcare during Osteopathy Awareness Week from the April 16-22. The Osteopaths New Zealand-led week is timed to coincide with In-

ternational Osteopathic Healthcare Week which will be celebrated by more than 75 osteopathic organisations around the world. Osteopaths are primary healthcare practitioners who use a range of hands-on techniques to assist their patients, Osteopaths New Zealand president Jonathan Lloyd

Paine says. “People are often surprised at the range of conditions we can help with. It’s a lot broader than just sore backs, and gentle enough that we can help people of any age. “We look at how the whole body is interconnected, and treatment aims to help not only the current

symptoms, but the reasons the problem arose and the means to prevent recurrences through improving the functional capacity for healing.” Common conditions Osteopaths may assist with include back and neck pain, headaches, pregnancy related pain and sports or work injuries.

Osteopaths in New Zealand are registered ACC treatment providers and the profession is regulated under the Health Practitioners Competence Assurance Act (2003). PBA

Boxer packs a punch By Celeste Alexander Blenheim man Dave Semmens has been training in boxing for nine months and in that time he has lost 34kg and won his first fight in a technical knock out. The 33-year-old irrigation installer for Water Force has improved ‘leaps and bounds’ by not only succeeding in his fitness goals, but also taking up training to become a licensed amateur boxing coach. His journey began when he began doing Muay Thai combat training but because he had issues with his legs he decided boxing would be a better workout. He tried box-fit classes at a local gym, starting out at a weight of 104kg. He decided to take it up a notch and began training under Peter Warren with the intention of bettering his fitness. Nearly nine months later Dave weighs in at 71kg and recently won his first fight as an amateur middle weight. “When Peter suggested I train for the fight I said ‘yeah let’s do it’. It was out of my comfort zone but I upped my fitness to high intensity. “My way of thinking is to train hard to fight easy,” he says. Dave travelled to Christchurch for his fight on April 7 which was the same night as the IBO Oceania Orient Super Welterweight title fight. He went up against David Stein who had been training a similar period

to Dave. “My nerves were shot before the fight, thinking is he shorter or taller, what was his fighting style etc. “It turned out he was a bit taller but I was happy with that as I had been sparring with guys who were similar,” he says. For luck Dave wore his son Caleb’s hand wraps and went into the ring confident with his plan to ‘be fast and reach with my jabs’. “My goal was to own the centre of the ring and I just kept to the basics of straights, combinations and body shots. “David did get some shots in so I quickly learned that I have to work on my defense. “By the third round I gave everything I had with a lot of straight shots, pushing forward when I was connecting with him and he went down one final time. The fight was called off and I won by TKO,” he says. Asked to describe the feeling afterwards, Dave says it was like ‘being on cloud nine’. “I was ecstatic that all the hard work and training had paid off. I would have held my head high even if I lost or drew. The fact that I found the courage to give it a go was my proudest moment,” he says. With a win under his belt Dave is focusing on his training license and helping Peter train those who had entered into the Fight for Life competition in September.

Evening run The Marlborough Harrier Club is holding a pack/training run or walk leaving from the clubrooms at 6pm tomorrow. These are situated at Oliver Park on the corner of Weld and Cleghorn Streets. Reflector gear is compulsory. Joggers and walkers regardless of ability are welcome. Everyone is welcome to participate.

Marlborough football All games were called off last weekend because heavy rain in the week before closed sportsgrounds.

Pigeon results It wasn’t until Easter Monday that the Blenheim pigeon club was able to hold its third young bird race of the season from Rotherham, which turned out difficult enough because of the continuing mist hanging on all the ranges but the smart birds negotiated around the obstacles for a reasonably clear run for home. The winning pigeon was recorded by Two Fishers loft in Dillon’s Point with a speed of 60 km/hr, second to Chris Bensley in central on 51 km/hr followed by Alister Cooper and Ian McColm of Renwick with 44 and 42 km/hr respectively.

Dave Semmens of the Warrior Warren Boxing Club has won his first ever fight and lost 34kg after nine months of training.

Merkin and co-driver Sandra Everson, Lloyd Owen and codriver Jonty Brenssell and Jason Clark and co-driver Tracy Clark competed and walked away with some impressive finishes. Each of the drivers competed in the 5a class for 4WDs, except for David who was in the 5b class for 2WD.

The NZRC Gull Challenge 5a was won by Richard Bateman and Jordyn Smith and the Gull Challenge 5b class saw David Taylor and Pania Huntley come in at second. In the Mainland Series part of the rally Richard came in second in his class and fifth overall. Lloyd came in sixth in his class

and 15th overall. David placed second in his class and 18th overall and unfortunately for Jason he didn’t make it past day one due to brake failure. According to David it was a good result for the club. “It’s a testing event where 58 didn’t actually finish, so overall the club did very well.”
