Proud army service By Celeste Alexander Betty Binnie, aged 92, lives at Seddon and is a much loved member of the community but what some may not realise is that she has a special reason for marking Anzac Day. Betty served in the Australian Army from January 8, 1943 through to April 30, 1946 as a Signalman. Her posting at her time of discharge was in the Australian Womens Army Service. In addition to this her son Barry was born on Anzac Day, so it’s a day for both remembrance and celebration. Continued page 2 Betty Binnie pictured at the Ward Anzac Memorial Service on Monday.

Betty’s service to WWII intelligence honoured Continued from page 1 Born in Queensland in 1924, Betty was the eighth, of 11 children. The family grew up on a sugar cane farm, then at the age of 17 Betty began nursing. She soon decided it wasn’t for her, so enlisted for the Australian Army aged 18. Betty became a signalman and was part of a small communication unit based in several locations including Townsville and Cairns. The unit was one of many that intercepted and decoded Japanese military and naval messages and distributed them to aid the army’s battle strategies against invasions. “It was the best job ever, I loved being part of a small unit,” she says.

Betty recalls significant moments during the war when stationed in Cairns. One being the ‘biggest cattle drive that’s ever been seen’, which saw hundreds of thousands of the cattle driven into the Northern Territory. “All the cattle were driven from farms in the area the Japanese were threatening to invade. “It was removing a food supply from the enemy, if they did land they wouldn’t have anything to eat... that’s how close they were to Australia.” In 1946 Betty was discharged and she went on to meet her husband Donald. He had also served but in the New Zealand Army in peace keeping in Japan. The two married and had two children, Barry who was born on Anzac Day and daughter Linda.

They moved to New Zealand in 1957 and eventually retired to Marlborough in 1991. “I love it in Seddon, it’s not the place, it’s the people. “There’s always people popping in to visit and check on me... there’s a nice community spirit out here,” she says. With nine grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild, Betty is much loved by her family and described as being ‘a real gogetter with an incredibly positive attitude’. In remembrance of Betty’s service to the Australian Army, RAAF Squadron Leader Marcus Watson from the Australian High Commission personally pinned on her medals at the Betty Binnie served in the Australian Army from 1943 to 1946 as a signalman. Ward service on Monday.

TWICE WEEKLY

From triumph to Anzac Day playing By Cathie Bell Some of Marlborough First Class Brass’ youth section members are going from a triumphant win at the national competitions to commemorating Anzac Day yesterday. Twenty-six young people, aged five to 22, represented Marlborough in the youth section of the New Zealand Brass Band competitions in Wellington last week, under the mentoring of Kevin Moseley and Denis Teeling. Denis says the band did themselves and Marlborough proud, winning the Besson Musical Instrument silver challenge cup, first awarded in 1895. “They were great, and they had a great time as well.” Some of the players will be back in Marlborough now, ready for Anzac Day ceremonies, Denis says, although some of them are ‘a little bit little to be in the parade itself, their little legs aren’t

long enough’. The band played a test piece, a hymn and their own choice ‘Bear Necessities’ in the Wellington Opera House. Oliver Sherf was judged best soloist in own choice piece of music. They also did well in solo events with wonderful results, with Eleanor Grigg winning Tenor Horn, Kodi Rausmussen second in Junior Flugel Horn, Oliver Sherf second in E Flat Bass, Spencer Lane second in Cornet under 15 years, Jonty Zydenbos third in Cornet under 19 years, Todd Smith third in Open Senior Flugel Horn, Graham Moseley fifth in Open Cornet, and Myles Shearer and the Quartet played really well in a very competitive section. Denis says the Marlborough brass youth section has been the talk of the New Zealand brass band competitions as senior band players have thought their playing was amazing. “The judge made lots of great comments saying they could have competed well in the C grade section.”

Marlborough turns out to remember By Cathie Bell Thousands of people gathered at Anzac Day services across the district to commemorate military service and remember those who left Marlborough for distant wars. Ward held its service on Monday, while dawn services were held in Picton and Seddon, and services later in the morning at Renwick, Spring Creek, Havelock, Rai Valley, Blenheim, and the Marlborough Sounds. Seddon’s service was for the first time in a century commemorated at the Awatere Memorial Hall after the war memorial was damaged in last November’s 7.8 earthquake. Mayor John Leggett

Hundreds at Picton’s Dawn Parade By Glenise Dreaver Hundreds of people, many in family groups, attended the Picton Dawn Parade held at 6am on Anzac Day. Those on parade were led to the memorial gate by the Blenheim and District’s Highland Pipe Band. The traditional grieving cries of Maori women were heard as past and present representatives of all the armed services as well as emergency services and community

representatives approached the podium. Deputy Mayor Terry Sloan spoke particularly of the sacrifices made in Picton and the Sounds during World War I. He referred to the losses of the community, the local names still well known, engraved on the memorial. “Most exchanged one tough life for another,” he says. He told of the whaling Norton family of Te Atiawa. It looked as though four sons enlisted

Around $500,000 will be invested to build two new teaching spaces at Witherlea School in Blenheim, Associate Education Minister Nikki Kaye says, with the new teaching spaces in a two-story building, to avoid any impact on outdoor recreational areas. Nikki says the roll at Witherlea School has been growing and this is expected to continue, so today’s investment will help the school accommodate this growth.

By Celeste Alexander A weighty fundraising challenge has been set between friends Simon Green and Michael Rea, who are also sales consultants for Mark Stevenson First National Real Estate Ltd. Their challenge runs for 12 weeks and is focused on making positive changes, including fitness and weight loss. Along the way, Simon and Michael are collecting sponsorship which they have decided to donate to six year old Georgina Allen, who will be undergoing life changing surgery in the United States later this year. Georgina was diagnosed with a form of cerebral palsy after her birth, called Spastic Diplegia, which affects her mobility. She has been accepted for a life changing spinal surgical procedure called ‘Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy’ that will be performed at the St. Louis Children’s Hospital in America. For parents Siobhan and Frank, this was thrilling news, but now the race is on to raise the $100,000 needed to fund the trip, surgery and rehabilitation. Simon and Michael heard about Georgina’s story and decided they wanted to help. “It all actually started when we were having

a joke with each other about needing to do something to get healthier. “We set our challenge and decided to donate the money we raise to Georgina’s family because at the end of the day, we are making positive changes and so is Georgina so it works well,” they say. As part of the 12 week challenge, Simon and Michael will be posting regular updates and videos to their social media pages and invite people to contact them and ‘set challenges’. They will have Kustom Fitness and Avanti Plus Blenheim helping them along the way. “If people want to share tips, sponsor each kilo we lose or kilometre we run, or perhaps they want to sponsor a challenge then we would love to hear from them.” Both men will have their final weigh in at a charity auction event which is currently being organised. The date and details of this event will be confirmed closer to the time. “The loser will be shouting lunch and making an extra donation to Georgina’s fund,” Michael laughs. Contact Simon or Michael for more information. Donations can also be made to Givealittle page ‘Georgina’s Journey to Walk Unaided’.

EV charging station looked at High-powered electric vehicle charging stations could be provided in Blenheim’s public spaces. Marlborough District Council smart business officer Jane Tito confirms the council is looking at providing space in council-owned public parking facilities. A network of the charging stations is being built around the country, with one planned for Havelock shortly by provider Charge.net. Jane says the council has been talking with Charge.net about installing one in Blenheim, in addition to the three-phase power plugs at various places in the central business district where people can charge their mobility scooters and other devices. These include Bythell Place, Liz Davidson Place, and the Alfred Street carpark building, she says.

Racecourse shut to the public By Cathie Bell Waterlea Racecourse owners, Waterlea Properties, have closed the racecourse’s tracks to the public and have put up signs warning people off. Waterlea Properties chairman David Sim says the move has come about because of increased health and safety rules. The racecourse has horses and trotting buggies on it regularly as owners and trainers work the horses, and they feel the risks are too high if people and their dogs have

uncontrolled access to the tracks. Track manager Vaughn Cameron says there is a perception that the racecourse is a public place, which it isn’t. Previously, most trainers were finished by 10am and the public was okay after that, but now, he says, trainers are working different jobs and then training their horses, with people training horses at 2pm, 3pm, and 5pm this week. The last straw was the water truck at 6pm during summer, when it was met with a person

coming the other way riding a bike, wearing an Ipod, and exercising two dogs on the track. “We’re having to move to a blanket ban, because that’s the best way to police it.” Lee Wilde who lives at the racecourse says horses like to follow the marks on the course, but if they see a variation, they spook and change course suddenly, which can tip riders out and injure them. “We had a sign for people to ask permission to go on the track but no one did.”

Redwood Ken Gullery didn’t realise how far a TV series would travel.

Skipper’s time replays again By Glenise Dreaver When Picton’s Ken Gullery happily came out of retirement in November 2015 to take Neil Oliver’s Coast New Zealand team out to film a mail boat cruise, he had no idea his role as skipper and commentator would make ongoing viewing around the world. The Top of the South segment in which he took part has featured three times on the highly-rated international television series, with the original screening and two rebroadcasts already shown here. The third screening was on the History channel earlier this month. The segment also included an extensive tour of the Edwin Fox and an exploration of mass whale strandings at Farewell Spit,

as well as interviews with local people. “Beachcomber asked me to do the job because I’d done it for years and knew the area well,” said Ken. Neil and the team drove over from Farewell Spit at short notice because of problems with the weather, and they were very tired. Only three stops were planned but, despite fatigue, the team enjoyed the trip so much they asked to add two more, he says. The dog biscuits for the animals waiting eagerly on the wharves featured largely. “I started that with the Havelock mail boat. It was a long day from 8.30am to 6.30pm. “Feeding the dogs and Eddie the sheep, and the pig, kept any children entertained.”

Dear Ed, In response to the article “Nurses don’t want to move from hospital base”, I question whether it is necessary for the health board to spend $150,000 a year in rent when the nurses feel it is more beneficial to patients to continue using the purpose-built space at the hospital. Have all aspects been considered? Nurse supporter Rarangi

funded service Dear Ed, Shifting the district nurses away from the coalface of a working hospital rings a bell with me. As a firefighter in Invercargill a couple of decades back, when we were firmly in the business Round Table’s sight, I witnessed the Fire Safety Department being shifted from the fire station and into commercial premises at a substantial monetary cost. This put an end to the day-to-day contact between firefighting and fire prevention staff, which had always been most valuable to both arms. Of course, fire safety is not so much a public good and more a commercial entity. The agendas of those overseeing our taxpayer funded services always need careful scrutiny to ensure that not too much of the neoliberal agenda comes into play. Yours faithfully, Bill Holvey.

Bad move Dear Ed, Regarding your article in last Friday’s Sun titled “Bosses rethinking, board members say.” This refers to the proposal to shift the District Nurses to the alternative Health Hub. We would like to point out three things: 1) The Board Members are quoting the “bosses”. We would say the Board members ARE the bosses and are not elected to be controlled by the senior DHB staff. 2) One of those board members is Stephen Vallance who is a respected health professional and he supports the District Nurses staying at Wairau. His opinion should mean a whole lot more than the opinion of professional bureaucrats who haven’t worked in the health system. 3) It’s great that there is some rethinking going on. Just because this model works in Nelson does not mean it is beneficial to patients and staff in Marlborough. We’re not being parochial but the facilities the Marlborough District Nurses have in Wairau are second to none. Our understanding is that is not the case in Nelson Hospital. For goodness sake Marlborough, wake up to this ill-advised move that will cost our population $150,000 worth of LESS care. John and Barb Sinclair Blenheim

Nurses’ concerns Dear Ed, If the Nelson Marlborough District Health Board general manager of strategy, planning, and community is so focussed on the importance of the Marlborough community and keeping people well, would it not be that the purpose-built part of the hospital where all relevant departments are in the same wing be the best option for staff and patients? Why would anyone with good commonsense and best interests of community wellbeing divide up a very well-run wing of the hospital? There are staff shortages now, so creating a division of a well-run department will create stress and inconvenience to staff and patients. I understand that these departments struggle with funding; dividing them will cost a lot of money that should and could be used on patient care. The hospital board’s responsibility, as I understand, is to provide care for both staff and patients. Roger McClimont Havelock

ANZAC services Dear Ed, ANZAC Day is a public occasion of remembrance for all those who have served. In Blenheim, at the memorial there are seats reserved for those District Councillors who serve by the governance of the people. There is a place in the parade for the Police and Firefighters who serve to benefit the community. But where is the place for those who served our country in many difficult or dangerous places beyond our shores? The men and woman of the armed services who have qualified to wear the Operational Service medal are not recognised so there is no distinct place for them. They can march only with the “civilian” supporting members of the R and SA or not at all. Requests for acceptance of our separate identity have been made without result. If the public want all their services to have a distinct place I invite them to express their opinion to either the Returned Services Association organisers, or to the mayor or councillors who co-operate with them. Terry Ford

Nurses relocation Dear Ed, Crazy!! Operates so well from Wairau Hospital, why change? Does the new health building in Queen Street need more occupants, more rent? Leave the district nurses department where it is, where it belongs - at Wairau

Hospital. The department was purposebuilt and has access to all the amenities needed for ‘after care’ of hospital patients. Why the need to change what has worked so well for so many for so long? Stay Put Blenheim

Hospital better Dear Ed, Having been treated by the District Nurses at Wairau Hospital for the last 15 months with over 100 visits, I find it absurd that they are being considered for relocation to the Marlborough Health Hub in the middle of the CBD. The convenience of being at its current Wairau Hospital location is paramount as my visits frequently included other services also located at the hospital.

Parking is an obvious issue at the Marlborough Health Hub location with minimum free and often only paid parking available close by. As the District Nurses are and have a pivotal role in the hospital system, the short term gain of relocation to the middle of the town will be outweighed by the long term loss to the district and hospital. Neville Ham Blenheim

Health hub thoughts Dear Ed, What on earth gets into the heads of these bureaucrats? Despite the weasel words of the apologist for the Nelson Marlborough Health Board, the fact appears to be that the morale among their own staff is low on the grounds of their uncertainty as to whether they are to be uprooted and re-located against their wishes and all common sense. The apologist says that both the community and the staff have been consulted. If the article is factually even half correct it indicates that the communication channels used have clearly been miserably ineffective if indeed they exist at all. The article states that several people have voiced their concerns over the proposed move. Those people have not been named. It seems fear of some sort of action against them by the board is the driver here. This smacks of Muldoonism and ruling by the maxim of dividing and conquering. The board is under a legal obligation to deal with their staff in good faith. One is left wondering whether the board knows that. As a famous (albeit American) organisational authority once said, “forget the army of consultants and bureaucrats - if you want to know what is going on inside an organisation, you talk to the person with the broom, the one that sweeps the floor. H/she knows what’s going on and will have some good ideas as to the best way forward for the organisation.” The board would do well to remember this principle. The fact is that it is important to have meaningful input from the people who matter – the ones doing the work at ground level. In this case the nurses, other staff and the public. Without them there is no Health Hub. Neville Higgison Rarangi

Chemist shops Dear Ed, I think chemist shops are marvellous. Where would we be if we couldn’t get our medicines, pills and lotions or anything else we might need. If you don’t know what to buy, they give very good advice and help you. If any of the homes in Blenheim want anything, the chemist gets it straight. They always give good gift service. Keep up the good work. Harleen Apperley

King Salmon The government and news media seem to be pushing for King Salmon expanding its farms. The Sounds are a public recreational area. King Salmon takes up public space, pays no rent or rates and pollutes the sea bed and area around. Why can’t King Salmon farm in the open sea like is done in other places. Keep out of our Sounds. Who is government governing for? The people or the wealthy foreign Malaysian interests behind King Salmon? Disgusted Angler Blenheim

Salmon Spin Dear Ed, The spin which King Salmon’s Grant Rosewarne is emitting must be making him giddy. That the majority of submissions are for the farms smacks of frantic orchestration. My reading, talking to many, is most are opposed or at least questioning turning the Sounds into an industrial junkyard. Besides thousands - yes literally thousands - have opposed the farms through their organisations. So one organisation’s objection represents hundreds of votes. Collectively they add up to thousands. But I am concerned at the slant for the proposal and government’s heavy hand pushing for it and picking a dubious panel. Environment Minister (that’s a joke) Nick Smith’s grubby little finger prints are all over it. Percy Parker

Sounds Air managing director Andrew Crawford is proud of the improvement the company has made with its new Pilatus planes.

Flying high, with feet on the ground Sounds Air managing director Andrew Crawford talks to Glenise Dreaver about the huge growth this once-tiny airline has undergone since its new team took over in 2004.

There were ten staff on the books when Andrew Crawford took over as Managing Director of Sounds Air in 2004. Fast forward to 2017. There are now 65 staff and a US$18m fleet of eight planes, serviced by their own Omaka-based subsidiary Sounds Aero Maintenance and Avcraft Engineering in Feilding. “We’ve gone from 14,000 passengers a year in 2004 to 100,000 now,” says Andrew. “Our level of growth has been much faster than we ever hoped.” Five nine seater Pilatus PC12’s and five 12-seater Cessna Caravans fly to ten destinations. These range between Napier and Christchurch. The WellingtonWestport, Wellington-Taupo and Blenheim-Christchurch routes were picked up when Air NZ pulled out.

A reputation for safety and reliability takes a while to build up, he says. “We now have a fantastic ontime departure percentage. “We never fly all our aircraft at once so we always have spare capacity for weather or maintenance issues.” One result has been a change in the passenger profile. “We’ve had four GovernorsGeneral, John Key when he was Prime Minister, and often Cabinet Ministers and other high-profile figures.” Andrew says, however, it is frustrating that despite their best efforts, many locals still do not realise how the scope of their operations has grown and changed. “It’s ten years since we shifted our main local base to Blenheim airport and yet some passengers still turn up to Picton for their

flights, going ‘where’s our plane?’ They just haven’t read their tickets.” Koromiko still has regular daily flights though, and also responds to peak demand. “We had eight flights in on the Thursday before Easter.” There’s a huge capital investment in the company and Andrew says a very strong cash flow is vital. “We haven’t always had that,” he admits, adding that there were some hard years. “There was nothing easy about it.” Though the days of lying awake at nights worrying are now over, huge challenges remain. “There are always regulatory struggles. “Local councils, the Civil Aviation Authority, the airport companies... everyone’s got their hand out.” There are also fuel costs, landing

fees, insurances, CAA fees, wages. “And maintenance fees are huge. You have to have a lot of $99 fares to cover it all. “There’s only that much left,” he says, holding up his thumb and forefinger to show a minuscule gap. The company has diversified with the multi-million development of the Marlborough Sounds Airpark subdivision near the Koromiko field. Five of the 16 residential sections for aviation enthusiasts have been sold. One condition is the building of a hangar, though ownership of a plane is not compulsory. “But four of the five residents do have their own planes. “ Further diversification is planned but the details are not yet available, says Andrew. “It’s classified!”

Chris Black first set foot in the insurance industry at the age of 17 and has gone on to build a successful career as the Branch Director for RMA General Marlborough. Born and bred in Marlborough, Chris admits it was not the career path he had planned to follow but after an opportunity to train as a junior broker arose , he put his name forward. “I was working an after school job at New World and the owners at the time knew the manager at Aon Insurance Brokers. He was looking for a junior broker and was keen for someone to put their name forward. “There I did my training and worked for over four years before getting a shoulder tap to manage a smaller office for ACM Ahlers. “That was a bit of a changing point for me, moving away from a US corporate structure to a New Zealand owned business,” he says. In 2012 that company sold to Crombie Lockwood which meant more changes, so when New Zealand-owned and operated company RMA General expressed interest in having Chris join the team, he saw it as an opportunity to be his own boss and build a quality locally-owned, broking operation in the region. “I had the option to bring the brand to Marlborough and essentially be my own boss. This is home and I love it here, which was a big part of my decision,” he says. Chris specialises in everything from ‘one man band tradies through to large commercial business insurance’, using his in-depth knowledge of risks and the insurance market to find and arrange suitable insurance policies and cover for his clients. “My core is business insurance but also expanding into Key Person, Income Protection, Life and Health. Having the right insurance at claim time is what matters most, so it’s my role to provide easy-to-understand risk management advice relevant to each clients

particular needs,” he says. After 12 years in the industry Chris has a loyal following of clients who appreciate his ‘open approach’ to insurance. “The high level of service, my knowledge of product and relaxed approach has helped me to develop that loyal clientele over the years. “I have an open approach to insurance, it’s my job to advise clients of the risk they have in their business. “I simply discuss what the risks are and what the price is going to be should they wish to transfer that risk via insurance – insurance isn’t the only answer when it comes to risk management and I always want my clients to believe in what they are buying without pressuring them into a sale. I gain a lot of credibility in that respect,” he says.

Choose heating wisely

How you use a room will help you to decide the type of heater that’s most suitable. For larger rooms you might want to heat it regularly, like a living room, it’s worth paying more upfront for a fixed heater with lower running costs and Fisher Windows Marlborough more heat output than an electric 22 Bomford Street, Blenheim 578 1436 heater. Supporting the Child Cancer Appealwood sales@fishermarl.co.nz This could be a modern www.fisherwindows.co.nz or wood-pellet burner, an EN-

ERGY STAR qualified heat pump, or an ENERGY STAR qualified flued gas heater. Electric heaters may be enough for smaller rooms and rooms you only heat occasionally, like bedrooms as they’re cheap to buy but more expensive to run. Talk to your local friendly heating specialists to find out what would be the best solution for your home or workplace.

Healthy temp for your home The World Health Organisation and New Zealand’s Ministry of Health recommend these temperatures in your house: • A minimum of 18°C during the day, or a minimum of 20°C

for more vulnerable groups like children, the elderly and people who are ill. • A minimum of 16°C in your bedroom overnight.

WINTER 17 0 2 WARMTH Tried and trusted service the key Cuddon’s focus on customer service has seen the company stand the test of time, and that applies across its diverse range of products. Cuddon Ltd’s refrigeration and air conditioning manager Sandy Morrison says the air conditioning market is a competitive one, with a lot of products and a lot of companies ‘standing on the street corner’ bidding for customers. One of Marlborough’s longest-running companies, Cuddon has been in existence for 80 years next year, and Sandy says it has ‘quite a history’. While business is good and the company is ‘doing quite well’, it is in a competitive business, and he has to ‘get out there and wave the flag’, he says. “We pride ourselves on the service we provide to customers. “The market we’re in, as far as air conditioning side of things go, it’s fairly competitive. There is a lot of people doing it, a lot of one man bands out there. We have to emphasise the difference that we look after our customers. “We’re here for the long haul…One man

bands might be here on the street corner today, but will they be here tomorrow?” Sandy says Cuddon has a long history of working in air conditioning and refrigeration, and has good relationships with blue chip companies such as Mitsubishi Electric, Toshiba, and Panasonic. They have access to ‘good quality equipment from good quality companies’, he says. For winter, he recommends the heat recovery ventilator, saying it’s a ‘genuine heat recovery system’, as opposed to ‘positive pressure systems that are touted around the place’. “All things considered, it’s a better product.” The heat recovery ventilation system is manufactured here in New Zealand, but with Swedish components, Sandy says. “We have installed a few of them here in Blenheim, they do the job.” He says more people are interested in air conditioning now. “You work into shops and malls and they’re all air-conditioned these days. “People have become accustomed to it. We’re a bit mollycoddled these days,” he laughs.

Kelvin Watson, co-ordinator for the Ulysses Marlborough Branch was awarded the Odyssey Medal for meritorious service to the club last week.

Medal given to ‘deserving’ Ulysses member

By Celeste Alexander Kelvin Watson has been a member of the Ulysses club Marlborough branch for 21 years and last week his contributions were recognised. He was awarded the Odyssey Medal for meritorious service to the club at a special gathering, making him the third Marlborough member to receive this honour. He joins Murray Brooks and Don Best who are also recipients. Finding out he had been nominated for the medal came as a ‘complete surprise’, and he was left feeling thrilled and speechless.

“There were two people nominated so I am just thrilled to be awarded it,” he says. All of the Ulysses Club branch co-ordinators nominate one of their members who they felt was deserving. In the speech read out at the awarding of the medal, Kelvin was described as being ‘a gentle giant with a ready smile’. “He is conscientious, honest, loves a good joke, helpful and well liked among branch members. He’s a man who doesn’t shy away from getting a job done and will be part of any organising that needs to be done when he is asked.”

Anzac visit from the Air Force By Celeste Alexander The children at Little Footsteps Scott Street early learning centre were treated to a visit from Royal New Zealand Air Force Corporal Tom Sidey who was visiting from Auckland on Monday. Tom shared with the

Pirates go to top in Marlborough Football By Glenn Kirby Plenty of goals were shipped in as the latest round of football saw Central Pirates dominated previously unbeaten Rangers City coasting home winners by 7-1. Speedster Sam Pearson netted four times while Harrison Pine contributed with a brace in what was a clinical display from the good mix of youth and experience. Blenheim Valley Masters edged out club mates United 4-3 after United got off to the best possible start and were up 2-0 early on. Ben Clarke pulled one back for Masters and Kyle Foster came on at half time and made a world of difference scoring one and breaking out for another team goal. Fred Sorenson’s brace saw Blenheim Valley Cobras take the points against Central in a 5-3 win in the other division one game. A depleted Clubs of Marlborough Rangers

were unlucky to lose to Blenheim Valley Woodbourne 2-1 but the game didn’t go their way in division 2, while Picton Panel and Paint were far too strong for Trojans winning 7-2. In division 3 Rangers Development beat Rangers Untied 8-6 and Trojans Spartans beat Redwood Masters 5-0.

Thursday run The Marlborough Harrier Club is holding a pack/training run or walk tomorrow evening, leaving from the clubrooms at Oliver Park on the corner of Weld and Cleghorn Streets at 6pm. Organisers say reflector gear is compulsory. Joggers and walkers, regardless of ability, are welcome to participate, whether they are members or not.

Netball moves to park

Horse trainer Donna Green with Kowhai Kerry.

Trainer looking forward to racing By Cathie Bell Trainer Donna Green is looking forward to this weekend’s racing at Waterlea Racecourse. While she doesn’t feel she’s been training Kowhai Kerry long enough to be confident about its chances, racing in Marlborough is ‘relaxed’, she says. Waterlea Racecourse is holding harness and galloping racing on Friday and Sunday this weekend. A club spokesman says numbers of horses taking part will be finalised by this afternoon. Donna says the horse she is training, Kowhai Kerry, will be taking part in the galloping

races. Kowhai Kerry is four years old, she says. “She’s a maiden, she hasn’t won any races but she’s had a few places.” Donna, a Marlborough-based trainer, says she hasn’t had the horse long enough really’. “Another month would be good… The only reason we got a horse is because we had a track work rider.” She says horse-training is ‘just a hobby’ to her now, and racing Kowhai Kerry is ‘more sentimental’ to her. “I had this horse’s mother… The owners let me have her, they rang up and said they had a

horse I’d like.” Donna has leased Kowhai Kerry, having got rid of all her own horses now. “The last one I had here, it got third.” As for the future, Donna isn’t looking too far beyond this weekend’s races. “With the roads, I don’t think we’ll go very far. We will race Blenheim, and that might be it. Seven hours to Christchurch is hard, so I just don’t know. “ It is a long way for people to come to race in Blenheim, she says, but it’s ‘peaceful’. “I love it here. A lot of people wanted me to have their horses here, because it’s so relaxed.”

Pre-competition warm-ups at netball’s new courts at Lansdowne Park have gone well, with players generally happy with the move from Horton Park to the new competition areas. Senior netball begins at Lansdowne Park this Saturday, with premier grade played at Marlborough Lines Stadium from May 2, while the juniors begin at Lansdowne Park on Saturday May 6. The new courts will be officially opened on Friday.

Momentum wanted in Argentina Kiwi rally star Hayden Paddon acknowledges he hasn’t had the best start to the year, but he and Blenheim-based co-driver John Kennard are looking for some improving momentum as they return to Argentina, the scene of their history-making first World Rally Championship victory last year. “It is one of the roughest events on the calendar, and depending on the weather/conditions, this will influence the rally a lot,” says Hayden of the 27-30 April running of Rally Argentina. “Looking after the car is also

key and while it would be nice to get the taste of champagne again, we head into this rally after some thorough preparation to push hard. “We know we can be competitive, but the competition is much closer this year, so, as always, we will be giving it a good go. “The focus is never on others’ expectations: it’s about getting some momentum and confidence back, and if we can do that, the results will flow.” The two head to the all-gravel South American event with his Hyundai i20 Coupe world

rally car following a successful two-day test on gravel prior to the previous tarmac WRC event in Corsica where they finished sixth. John is also looking forward to the hugely popular Argentinean event. “I’m just happy to be back on gravel, after a very tough rally in Corsica, and to be heading into a series of five events that we really like,” says John, who announced a month ago that he’ll step down from his WRC role after July’s Rally Finland. “Argentina is always a great

place to rally, with a mix of faster, slower, rougher and less rough stages, and of course, as the scene of our first WRC victory last year, as well as in the production category win in 2011, is certainly a special place to return to for one of my last WRC events with Hayden.” Hayden and John will start the first day eighth on the road in the #4 Hyundai i20 Coupe WRC, based on their current championship position. Saturday and Sunday will see WRC competitors running in reverse rally classification.
