By Cathie Bell There were a lot of happy children at St Mary’s Preschool yesterday when Norwood parts manager Bryan Simpson gave them a pedalpowered tractor loader for the preschool. Children lined up to pedal the orange machine around the preschool, and they are also getting orange hats and water bottles to match. Four year-old Andrew Li-Wilkes goes to the preschool, and his father Tim Wilkes, who died two

years ago, was Norwood’s chief executive. Andrew’s mother, Mandy Li, says the links are still strong with the company, and the tractor-loader will be ‘well-loved and well-used’. Norwood in Marlborough has just won branch of the year out of the 17 branches nationally, Bryan says, taking out eight of the 16 categories. Gourmet province for events By Cathie Bell Marlborough’s reputation as a gourmet province blessed with excellent food and drink is on show this weekend, and will be highlighted in another new event in November. Feast Marlborough is a three-day festival of food and drink focussed around the Saint Clair Vineyard Half Marathon, which brings about 4000 people to the region to run a course around Rapaura vineyards on Saturday. As part of that, the centre of town will be taken over on Friday for a street market of food stalls, running from 3pm until 7pm. Also announced this week was the launch of Ocean Vine Hop, a new R18 event for Marlborough built around seafood, wine, and beer, with tickets on sale from yesterday. With partial funding secured from Marlborough District Council’s commercial events fund and permission to use the venue, the inaugural event is scheduled to take place at Churchill Glade Blenheim on November 25, event organiser and Marlborough4Fun

chief executive officer Katrina Lange says. This will be the first in Marlborough to showcase all three local gastronomic offerings at an R18 event of beer, wine and seafood as a combination, Katrina says. “As a destination Marlborough is known for the world class wines produced. “We believe that by including the bountiful seafood available within the region and highlighting the rising craft brewing industry, we can offer a brand new experience for visitors and locals alike.” She says the festival is aiming for about 2500 people to attend an all-day R18 event, combining culinary master classes, tastings and demonstrations, together with stalls offering beer, wine and other Marlborough produce, with tasty menus to choose from, as well as entertainment including Jordan Luck, Jason Kerrison and Shane Cortese & The 8 Track Band”. Marlborough4Fun is working to build pre and post events around the festival to encourage visitors to stay longer in the region. “We also want our locals to embrace the

event and have a great time too so we are putting on a limited number of local specials at a very discounted rate on sale for

a limited period to beginning of July, unless sold out prior,” Katrina says.

‘Fishing park may make things worse’ Looking at what has been done overseas makes it clear that the recreational fishing park proposed for the Marlborough Sounds won’t work and a different system is needed, advocate Peter Lawless says. He had a Winston Churchill Fellowship last year, which he used to visit Australia, Canada, and the United States to look at marine protection there. “A recreational fishing park as proposed by the Government for the Marlborough Sounds would make things worse not better,” Peter says. “After travelling round the world looking at approaches to marine protection, I am advocating that the Marlborough Marine Futures project get be-

hind a truly comprehensive marine park for the Marlborough Sounds, and the trustees have accepted this in principle and have called a forum to test support for this.” The Marlborough Marine Futures Forum is on Sunday at the Waikawa Boating Club. Marlborough Sounds Integrated Management Trust chairman Eric Jorgensen says the trust has been frustrated by Government inaction over the past year. “Because of this inaction we are now preparing to push forward with developing solutions within our own community rather than wait. “The fact is our marine environment is not getting any

better, and planning is no more integrated or comprehensive than a year ago. “What the Trustees want is a positive direction to come from our community that we can take to decision makers.” Peter says that after his research he has advised the trust to continue its work towards a more comprehensive and enduring management solution. “Fishing Parks … are at best a partial solution, and at worst would lead to depletion rather than abundance. “The Mimiwhangata fishing park is a classic example where exclusion of commercial fishing while encouraging recreational fishing led to no Peter Lawless, during his Winston Churchill Fellowship. more fish.”

Winter harness meeting moved The Marlborough Harness club has moved its June winter meeting to Addington Raceway in Christchurch. The two day meeting will now be a one day meeting on Sunday 25 June. With the Kaikoura earthquake

restricting road transportation from the south, this has made it difficult to attract other south island horses. The club believes this is best for Harness racing and the club, says president Brian Wasney. This is the first time in the

history of Marlborough Harness Racing that the club has moved to another track outside the region. Local trainers will now be offered a subsidy for transport to Christchurch, plus the Addington club have helped us out, says Brian.

The Sun

The Marlborough Cup run over two miles will be held plus a further eleven races. It should be good for the club turnover-wise as this will be the only harness race on the Sunday says Brian.

Four wins back to back Ian Woolley off to plough in Kenya and Germany By Celeste Alexander Local man Ian Woolley has proved he’s a world class plougher once again by winning the conventional class of the national ploughing championships in Canterbury last month for the fourth year in a row. This is his fourth national win back to back which has not been done before in the conventional class. Ian was ploughing with new equipment this year which caused some last minute hiccups, but the two days of competition went ‘fairly smooth’ and he placed 33.5 points ahead of the second place winner. By winning his class at the nationals, Ian is now a contender for the world championships which will be held next year in Germany. “It was a little bit of a surprise as I was the only one who had changed their plough, but it’s nice to win it four times back to back,” he says. But before Ian can get excited about heading to

Local man Ian Woolley pictured looking at his ploughing efforts at last month’s New Zealand Ploughing Championship in Canterbury. Photo provided.

Germany, he first must focus on this year’s World Ploughing Championship in Kenya, which he won the right to contest after winning last year’s national event. There were a number of security issues that had initially concerned Ian but the Kenya Government has given assurance that all equipment and transporta-

tion will be secure. Ian’s tractor and plough will be shipped from England where he competed last year to Kenya. “The government has got right in behind this event, even insuring the equipment. Everything is much better organised than what it was 12 months ago and is getting better each week. “It’s going to be an eye

opener,” he says. Ian and wife Jenny plan to leave for Kenya in November, arriving in Nairobi three weeks ahead of the event then driving the three hours to Nakuru. All equipment will have an armed escort when transported and stored in a secure compound. The World Ploughing Championship will then

take place in the first week of December. “I’m told it’s the end of the rainy season so the ground should be in good condition, but you never know. “It’s red dirt so if it’s wet it’s really sticky and if too dry then it’s hard as a brick. “It’s going to be really interesting and really it’s how you adjust to the conditions. “This is why we go earlier whereas some countries go the week of the event,” he says. The cost for Ian to compete at the World Championship can be up to $25,000 but thanks to the support and fundraising efforts of the Marlborough Ploughing Association, ‘friends and family’, Ian is able to go. The Ma rlborough Ploughing Association will be hosting a quiz night in the coming months to help support Ian’s travel to Kenya and Germany. More details will be available closer to the time.

BNZ closes Picton BNZ will close permanently next week. The nearest branch will now be Blenheim for Picton people almost 30 minutes away. A significant decline in transactions is blamed for the closure.

Hunters have a feast Clear skies and bright sunshine didn’t stop hunters having a feast for the start of ducking shooting season on Saturday. The Para Wetland, a major restoration project now part completed, was described as a “standout” with hunters either achieving bag limits (8 mallards) or close to it. Nelson / Marlborough manager Rhys Barrier says it is encouraging as “Fish & Game has put a lot of work into saving the area as a wetland.” The new game bird hunting season may be ‘one of best for years’.

By Cathie Bell Phyl Bradshaw has been a volunteer at Sheets and Things for 17 years, but now at 90, she’s decided to retire. She was one of the original team that set up the linen supply charity, after a small group of women decided there was a need in the community that they would answer. Sheets and Things is now on Redwood Street, next to CrossRoads, in front of The Warehouse, but it has moved around a lot of places in Blenheim, Phyl says. It started at a house in Riverlands, and has operated from a garage, and even a van at one stage. “We sold out of plastic drums, hanging the sheets on dress racks.” She says she can’t pinpoint what has kept her involved for 17 years. “I don’t know, I just enjoyed it… It’s a good group.” There have been unusual calls during that

time, people who have lost everything in fires, husbands whose wives have left them with the children, students going to university, ‘all sorts of things’, she says. “I’ve seen many, many changes over the years, but there has always been a need.” The community has been a huge support, she says, providing the goods for them. “If they didn’t bring the goods in for us to pass on, we wouldn’t be here.” The other volunteers and staff from Bread of Life held a birthday party for Phyl at Gecko Junction on Friday afternoon. Phyl downplayed her contribution, saying she isn’t sure why everyone is making a fuss of her. ‘90 is the new 70’. Her actual birthday was April 17, but turning 90 has made her realise it might be time to retire. “I think I have had enough. I’ve had two falls since Easter and I think I’ve done enough.”

Who will be top artist? By Celeste Alexander Sixty-five pieces of art, all ranging in size and mediums have been hung on the walls of the Yealands Estate Marlborough Gallery for the Peters Doig Marlborough Art Awards. This is an annual event competition and exhibition that attracts artists from all over the country who submit pieces of art over a range of mediums. The art will kept under lock and key while a judging panel makes their final decision this week in the lead up to the opening preview and awards presentation this Saturday night. That leaves just one question that all of the finalists will be asking themselves this week, ‘who will be

the 2017 Peters Doig Marlborough Art Awards winner?’ The competition opened for entries earlier in the year and a total of 150 were submitted. Of those the final 65 were chosen and will be exhibited to the public following the opening night. Awards publicity officer Walter Scott says this year’s entries are looking ‘fantastic’ and out of 65 there are eight local artists in the finals. Sponsoring the awards are Peters Doig Chartered Accountants directors Anton James and Tim McKendry who have provided the $3000 cash prize for first place. Peters Doig Marlborough Art Awards publicity officer Walter Scott asks the question ‘who will be the winner’ of this year’s awards event. All will be revealed this Saturday night.

Jaydin Shingleton was crowned the winner of the 2017 Senior Overall title in the Gourmet Paradise Country Music Awards held in January. File photo.

An evening with Jaydin Shingleton By Celeste Alexander The Gourmet Paradise Country Music Awards committee is hosting a fundraising concert this Saturday, and headlining the evening will be teenager Jaydin Shingleton. Jaydin was crowned the winner of the 2017 awards held earlier in the year, winning several titles including senior male open, male country gospel, senior country rock and runner up in the senior male traditional. He began singing in competitions since the age of four, but more professionally for the past four years. This year was his first time competing as a senior at the awards and he was ‘totally blown

away’ by his wins. Jaydin took out the grand prize of $3000 cash, a guitar plus a trophy. Those who missed out on seeing Jaydin perform at the awards can see him this weekend, along with local singers Ange Cook, Rick McCallum and Roger Gill. Money raised from the concert goes towards next year’s Gourmet Paradise Country Music Awards. The concert will be held at the main hall of the Clubs of Marlborough on Saturday at 7.30pm. Tickets cost $15 each and can be purchased by contacting Carolyn Coles on 027 6109 393 or Kathy on (03) 5779 659.

More nurses needed

Murphys Creek solution costs $3.8m

Dear Ed, Our population in 2006 was 42,546. Ten years to 2016 was 43,416an increase of 870. A projection of 2,184 five years to 2021, is more than double! How this increase is justified, it looks deceptive. Recent newspaper articles have stated it is difficult to retain young people to work in Marlborough. We do know the population is getting older; there is greater need for care of the elderly. While there is a need for buildings to house increasing population, a building will not alleviate problems of the elderly. There is already a building nurses work from, run efficiently. What is needed is more nurses covering the work load. Money proposed for rent and operating this Hub will obviously be better spent on more nurses. Roger McClimont Havelock

Last week the Marlborough District Council Assets and Services Committee voted in favour of a community sanctioned stormwater management solution for the Murphys Creek catchment. The collaborative Stakeholder Group’s proposal accepted by MDC is expected to cost $3.8 Million, with benefits including better water quality, lower flood peaks, and increased ecosystem health. The successful proposal is the result of a Cawthron Institute facilitated project that brought together various local stakeholders. Murphys Creek borders many Blenheim properties, businesses, and public spaces, ultimately flowing into the city’s major waterway, the Taylor River. The area’s stormwater network is underperforming and development of the re-zoned land in the upper reaches of the Murphys Creek catchment will add further pressure to the network. “With previous attempts to solve the Murphys Creek stormwater network problem falling short and a costly court process on the cards, MDC identified the need for change. “To achieve this a Collaborative Stakeholder Group was formed and members included catchment residents, local business owners, iwi representative, a developer, Marlborough Chamber of Commerce, and MDC. “Initially members of the group were at loggerheads, but by the end of the project everyone reached a consensus,” said Cawthron scientist Mark Newton.

Walking miracle Blenheim podiatrist Kaylene Mooiman has made miraculous recoveries from two huge surgeries in three years. She talks to Glenise Dreaver about her fight back to health. “They tell me I’m a walking miracle,” Kaylene says. She’s right. Her recovery from a major brain bleed and associated stroke in August 2016 has been speedy. Within six weeks of her brain surgery thethen 36 year-old navy wife and mother of two young children was back at work. “I started with a few patients. They knew what the situation was. I was fine.” That was despite the specialist cleaning up “a big mess” (his words). However, a stealth MRI had pinpointed the problem very precisely, in the occipital lobe. Surprisingly despite that, the surgery took only an hour. “We were worried about my vision, because of its position. But it’s fine.”

“Let your body rest. Enjoy it while you can!” It was just two years before, in October 2013, she’d had emergency surgery for Cauda Equina Syndrome after her L4 and 5 discs suddenly crushed her spinal cord. The effects on her mobility and bodily functions were, she said, huge – and devastating. They also meant this former HR contractor had to delay her final podiatry exams, graduating a couple of months after her friends. While the surgery was otherwise very successful, her left leg just didn’t work. Kaylene listened to medical advice that for six weeks she should only lie down, or walk. Nothing else. With what she says is her customary stubbornness, she set the alarm clock for every twenty minutes. “I knew how important muscle memory was and I had to use the window of opportunity that disappears with lack of use.” Scans taken then also identified a cavernoma, a raspberry-sized vascular entanglement in her left occipital lobe, probably there from birth. That area was where the later brain bleed occurred. She was warned she must present to the

Emergency Department if vision changes occurred with severe headache and nausea. As a health professional, Kaylene admits that stubbornness has been her biggest asset in her fight back to health, along with a high pain tolerance, both factors helping her work through frequent and incredibly bad headaches. One day, three years after her spinal surgery, she suddenly developed tunnel vision. Only for ten minutes, but it came with a really bad headache and nausea. She realised there could be a brain bleed. Kaylene gives a shamefaced grin about her next move. “I drove to the doctor!” It was the last time she drove for six months. A Life Flight to Wellington followed, then she stabilised, so she had a week at home to sort out her business and family life. Then it was back to Wellington for surgery. Her recovery was again miraculously good, though eighteen months later she still gets fatigued, a common side effect of brain surgery and anaesthetics. “I just can’t do vacuuming. Yippee! It knocks me out. So does mowing the lawns. I don’t know why.” Her advice to others recovering from major surgeries is, therefore, to be kind to yourself. “Let your body rest. Enjoy it while you can!” Kaylene’s husband Marnix, a RNZN Petty Officer Electronics Technician was given time to work out of Woodbourne instead of at sea. “He could also work from home at the base to mind their children, Jasmine now seven and Josiah 11. “The navy and airforce have both been wonderful.” They shifted here from Auckland after Kaylene’s first surgery, seeking a great place for a family, especially given Marnix’s long absences at sea. “He’d been here and loved it. “I‘d never seen Blenheim until I drove over that bridge.” Within a fortnight she was working as a podiatrist and soon established her own business. “We love it here. Dinosaurs among the books A Sydney-based fossil hunter and writer John Pickrell will be the Marlborough Book Festival’s first international guest at this year’s festival in July. John, who will reveal many remarkable new findings in dinosaur research, is one of 11 authors who will speak at the fourth annual festival from Friday 28 July to Sunday 30 July. The full programme is available now at www.marlboroughbookfest.co.nz and tickets are on sale through the website or over the counter at PaperPlus Blenheim. Marlborough Readers and Writers Charitable Trust spokeswoman Sonia O’Regan says John is the festival’s first international guest author. Dwarf dinosaurs found by an eccentric Transylvanian baron, an aquatic, crocodile-snouted carnivore bigger than T. Rex, a Chinese dinosaur with wings like a bat, and a Patagonian sauropod so enormous it was heavier than two commercial jet airliners are among the creatures he’s introduced readers to in his books. “It’s pretty quirky and fascinating stuff - and he’s a great presenter,” says Sonia. “We’re so pleased to be bringing John to Marlborough, and I think his sessions will appeal to a lot of people who haven’t been to the book festival before.” As well as the one-hour interview sessions which have been hugely popular at previous festivals, this year there will also be a poetry panel, a cartooning workshop, and a 90 minute session with Marlborough Living Treasure Joy Cowley.

Reverend Victoria Askin came to Marlborough at the beginning of the year to take up the role with St. Lukes Anglican Church in Spring Creek.

From geology to priesthood Dinosaur author John Pickrell is coming to Blenheim.

The Boathouse Theatre in Blenheim will be the festival hub this year, with a busy schedule on Saturday and Sunday. Sessions will also be held at Hunter’s Wines, Spy Valley cellar door, Cloudy Bay winery and on board Marlborough Tour Company’s MV Odyssea luxury catamaran. The Marlborough Book Festival is run by volunteers under a charitable trust and strongly supported by sponsoring businesses and the Marlborough District Council as a cultural treat for both book lovers and guest authors in the middle of winter.

Shhh...

By Celeste Alexander After studying geology at Canterbury University, Reverend Victoria Askin decided to ‘follow her faith’ and turned her attention to becoming a priest. Victoria moved to Marlborough at the beginning of the year to take up the role at St. Luke’s Anglican Church and says she has loved ‘every minute’. She’s already well known and liked for her musical abilities and often includes her guitar playing during services. Her position at the church is only ‘half time’ so for the other half she spends it teaching music to the students at Richmond View School. Born in South Canterbury, she was one of three children and regularly attended church ‘following in her mother’s footsteps’ she says. After studying at university she returned to her home in Nelson where she became a christian and re-evaluated her path. “I began thinking about what did I want to

do, so I started the process of training to become a priest and travelled to England where I lived and worked at a Christian retreat. “I came back to New Zealand to study and ended up at the Bishopdale Theological College in Nelson where I trained for three years. “After that I spent two years on the West Coast at the Compton Parish to become curate, learning about parish ministry, then finally here to Marlborough. Marlborough is a really beautiful place and the parish as a whole is very self motivated, warm and welcoming with an incredible community spirit which I enjoy,” she says. Her plans for the future include placing emphasis on reaching out to people who feel isolated in the community. “A big thing in society is that more and more people are isolated and the church plays a key part in providing the connections to them. Church is not the building, it’s the people within it and it’s that feeling we want to share with the wider community,” she says.

Midwives gather for special day By Celeste Alexander Midwives working at the Wairau Hospital’s maternity ward came together last Friday to celebrate International Day of the Midwife. A morning tea was held at the ward to both celebrate and highlight a number of issues that midwives face every day. Their message was that ‘supporting midwives supports women, mothers and families’. “Investing in the midwifery workforce and the maternity services is an investment in the wellbeing of the New Zealand nation now and into the future”, a spokesperson says. Some of the issues that were highlighted in NZ and around the world during International Day

of the Midwife include: Women and midwives are not valued and this is a gender issue. Inequitable pay and conditions for midwives reflect this lack of value. Maternity services are under resourced, leading to inadequate midwifery staffing numbers in maternity hospitals. This is impacting on midwives ability to provide the type of care women and babies need. Midwives and women are increasingly worried about this and are saying they will not accept this lack of priority given to maternity services. Maternity services have been undervalued and ignored for too long and this cannot continue.

Junction Hotel

Relax, unwind and enjoy the ambiance and warm hospitality of Spring Creek’s Junction Hotel. New owners Mike and Hazel Pink took over last October and are using their extensive experience in hospitality to make it a space for locals and visitors to enjoy. Whether you are after a quiet drink and bite to eat or are looking to hold a group gathering, the Junction Hotel has a number of options available including the popular Ferryman Restaurant. The restaurant was named after the Ferry Hotel which burnt down in the area during the 1950’s and is well liked for its ‘homely and comfortable’ setting. Mike says since taking over they have not ‘made many changes’ to the menu or decor, instead only adding a chiller to the restaurant for chilled wine and beer. “The restaurant is actually going really well and getting busier as time goes on. We slightly tweaked the menu, kept some of the favourites and made sure each meal was wholesome, flavoursome and affordable,” Mike says. The Ferryman Restaurant has a tempting entrée and mains menu with a selection of seafood, chicken, lamb and beef options. For an entrée choose from the garlic bread, shrimp cocktail, prawn twisters or soup of

the day. In the mains, the roast of the day is sure to delight, as well as the 250g prime ribeye steak grilled to your taste. There’s also the chicken wrapped in bacon, liver and bacon, lamb shanks, the hot pot, pasta of the day and the chicken, bacon and avocado salad. All meals come with a choice of chips or potatoes, and salad or vegetables. Sweeten your palate with one of the restaurant’s moreish desserts. There’s the brownie slice, apple shortcake, mud cake, sticky date pudding or icecream sundaes. For children there is also a separate menu to choose from. Finish your meal off with a local craft beer, a glass of wine or cider. “We have a good selection of craft beers on tap and are recognised by Society of Beer Advocates (SOBA),” Mike says. Group bookings are always welcome and a separate conference room can be made available on request. “We host a wide range of groups and can seat 60-100 in the conference room and around 50 in the restaurant. Simply call in and speak to us about your next group function and we will do our best to accommodate your needs,” he says.

Robin says As Night Falls is an exceptional show for Marlborough to host, and he expects tickets for the one-night performance to sell quickly. “Black Grace brings a physical energy to their shows like no other – their powerful productions burn up the floor and stimulate audiences around the world – it’s going to be an exceptional night in Marlborough,” he says. There are still a few more days to ensure councillors hear your views on the Council’s spending plans for the coming year. Council’s Annual Plan for the next 12 months concentrates on roads, water supplies, stormwater and sewerage, and building or upgrading community facilities. But the programme also includes a series of new projects that weren’t included in the Long Term Plan – ranging from digitising Council’s resource consent process, building a new pyrolysis plant in this district and directing more resources at biosecurity protection to creating a new events space at Pollard Park and longer opening hours for the libraries. Council expects to be able to deliver its whole programme with an increase of 2.33 per cent in rates and charges – almost 3 per cent less than was estimated in the Long Term Plan. At the same time, projected debt levels are well down. Marlborough Mayor John Leggett is urging people to make a submission before next week’s deadline. “We need to listen to people and this is the forum where that communication can happen. A submission needn’t be complicated and coming and talking to us about that submission shouldn’t be an intimidating experience. I want people to feel able to have their say and to know that councillors will be taking into consideration their ideas when it’s time to make final decisions.” Submissions on the Annual Plan must be received by the Council by 5.00pm on Wednesday 10 May. The Mayor is also flagging the need for the public to start thinking about next year’s Long Term Plan 2018-28. “The Long Term Plan is one of Council’s most important documents; it shows the direction that Council is taking on big projects and the priorities being set across all areas of Council activity. I’d urge anyone with an initiative or big idea that will benefit the region to start thinking now about making a submission as this is when our longterm funding decisions are made.”

Great finish for Marlborough football round one Central Pirates have taken out the first round of division one after a good 4-1 win over Blenheim Valley Masters. Harrison Pine keeps delivering for this team scoring a neat hat-trick. They will be pleased with their form going into a Chatham Cup match against Richmond on the 13th May at A and P Park. Defense will be key and coach Paul Finnegan will deploy Bryce Smith at center back after a great display over Masters. In the other games Central were too good

for Rangers United winning 6-3 in a high scoring game. Keagan Mortimer scored twice to put his team 3-1 up, sparking Central who found their feet and scored at will. Ruairi McLoughlin started the comeback and the team followed suit. Blenheim Valley United was too strong for club mates Blenheim Valley Cobras as Adam Rose stole the show with four goals and wonderful skills on display. Blenheim Valley Woodbourne triumphed

in the first round of second division football as they narrowly beat Picton Panel and Paint 4-3. Trojans sent Rangers Masters to the third division with a 4-2 win for them while Clubs of Marlborough rested for the draw. In the third division Rangers Development earned themselves promotion without playing sitting out their bye round. Rangers United beat Trojan Spartans 3-0 and Picton Crow Tavern snuck past Redwood Masters 1-0.
