Telling stories
By Cathie Bell The 250th anniversary of Captain James Cook’s arrival is a time to make sure we record and pass on the stories of our past, Dame Jenny Shipley says. She is the national chair of the Captain Cook commemorations, and visited Marlborough this week to check out the sites in the Marlborough Sounds, as well as her old school, Whitney Street School. Young people should be inspired by the world-class blue water sailors from the Pacific, Maori, and European involved in the Sounds encounters, Dame Jenny says. Continued on page 2 Dame Jenny Shipley with Whitney Street School pupils, Remy Bermingham, and Kyla Thorstensen.

Connection key one for Cook commemoration Continued from page 1 The arrival of Cook and his ship Endeavour in New Zealand in 1769 and his encounters with Maori will be the focus of commemorations in four places around New Zealand. Dame Jenny is the chair of the national body coordinating events, and says it is a ‘privilege’. “This project has a complexity, that’s a challenge, immensely rewarding. “Three of the four areas, I’ve had a lot of connection with – I have a home in the Bay of Islands, I was involved in the millennium work in Gisborne, and of course, Marlborough.” Dame Jenny was raised in Blenheim, where her father was the Presbyterian church minister.
Dame Jenny Shipley
She returned earlier this week to meet the trust co-ordinating local events, iwi, and the Marlborough District Council.
Ship Cove is familiar to her as her father used to take church Easter camps for teenagers there. “I spent many hours wandering round Ship Cove. I loved it, because I used to play with all these teenage kids who I thought were wonderful and fashionable and grown-up.” The release of Disney cartoon ‘Moana’ has been ‘hugely’ helpful, she says. “Maori were the most outstanding blue-water sailors the world has seen. Cook and his sailors also made epic voyages. “In Marlborough, I’m really looking forward to understanding the two stories – the Maori perspective and Cook experience. He stayed here the longest, they returned here because I think they had a really positive
experience.” Dame Jenny says the 250th anniversary events will capture the stories of our dual heritage and make that dual heritage visible, so people visiting here, seeing those Marlborough Sounds bays, know where those encounters happened and see and hear those stories. “It’s ambitious, but why wouldn’t we? We’re a different New Zealand than we were… We’re growing up, it’s 250 years on, why wouldn’t we commemorate this?” She says she ‘couldn’t be more delighted to be doing this, especially here in Marlborough’. “I had a long happy childhood in Blenheim, it was sunny, we were barefoot. “It was great.”
Talking the only way to resolve problems By Cathie Bell Rapid technological change is going to cause big changes in communities, even those such as Blenheim which are focussed on agriculture, former Prime Minister Jim Bolger says. Jim spoke to a Marlborough Chamber of Commerce dinner on Friday night, and told the 50 people attending that the world has been caught flat-footed by the rate of change, and too many people are missing out. “So they’re angry and we have xenophobic anger growing across the world, people with differences are getting targeted. People don’t know where they fit in, the world is moving too fast, and they feel they’re missing out.” Possible solutions include education and a universal basic income, and ‘radical thinking’ and engagement is needed, he
says. “Talking to each other is the only way to resolve disputes.” Treaty settlements are important too. “We need to resolve our issues from the past, so we are in a strong position moving forward. We need to be comfortable where we are as New Zealanders so we can focus on the challenges of new technology.” In response to questions, Jim says he is ‘terribly disappointed’ by new restrictions on New Zealanders in Australia. “They are pushing back, I don’t know what’s driving it in Australia… They have always been nervous about foreigners.” New Zealand should be more open, he says, and the country is not taking enough refugees. “We should be more generous in that space with no harm to us whatsoever.”

New museum ‘thinking big’ By Cathie Bell The Flaxbourne Museum was red-stickered in last year’s earthquake, but plans are well underway for a new, bigger replacement. Museum spokeswoman Sally Peters says a heritage consultant, John Coster, is doing the feasibility study on a new Flaxbourne heritage centre.
He was in Marlborough last week, visiting potential sites and holding a workshop for stakeholders on what the proposed centre could be. Sally says the workshop was ‘very successful’ and the proposal has ‘good support’ from the Marlborough District Council and locals. “We have got two sites we’re
looking at, they are not identified yet, but we are very excited, it’s really positive.” The cost of building the new heritage centre won’t be clear until after the feasibility study is completed, she says, ‘but we’re thinking big’. It is understood the new heritage centre would take up a two hectare site with a 1000 square

metre building. The council has agreed to staff it fulltime if it has an I-site in it for visitors. The facility will be cyclefriendly too, the proposed coastal cycleway will bring people through it and the Flaxbourne district. Sally says the feasibility study is expected in about two months.
Local company Affinity Cruises has generously donated a six night scenic Fiordland cruise for two that will be auctioned off with proceeds benefiting Hospice Marlborough. The retail cost of the cruise is $5,698. The auction takes place on Trademe under ‘Marlborough Hospice’ from May 15 -21.
Stock rules dropped The Marlborough District Council has dropped proposed bylaw changes that would have seen farmers need permits to move animals along roads. The proposal caused outrage amongst farmers and 51 of the 75 submissions on the proposed changes related to stock droving. Councillor Laressa Shenfield who chaired the group of councillors reviewing the bylaws says, councillors heard no compelling reason to tighten up. “We came to this hearing to listen and I think we all realised we don’t want to place unnecessary restrictions on our rural community where common sense can resolve the issues.”
Homeless increase catches Govt out By Cathie Bell A surge of homelessness across Marlborough has made the Government stop selling state houses and look to buy more houses in the district. However, the departments involved are using figures collected two years ago and are failing to help the growing numbers of families without homes. These families, some with young children, are moving from motel to motel, costing hundreds of thousands of dollars each month. M i n ist r y of Socia l Development’s deputy chief executive housing Scott Gallacher visited Blenheim two weeks ago and was told by housing advocates about families’ needs. He was not available for comment, and ministry spokesmen say the government is looking to buy 50 one and two bedroom houses because their information says the people without homes are single older men.
Kim Gatchell with children Tyler, 6, and Phoenix, 2.
“Our goal is to support people into long-term, sustainable housing. We are focused on increasing the supply of social housing to meet longer-term housing need.” The spokesmen say anyone with a current emergency housing need should get in touch with Work and Income.
Kim Gatchell is one of the parents struggling to find rental accommodation in the over-heated Marlborough market. She, her mother, and her two sons lost their rented house in February when their landlord didn’t renew the six-month fixed-term lease. She doesn’t know why it
wasn’t renewed, and says she doesn’t know of any dispute, and is not involved in drugs or alcohol. “It was totally unexpected.” The house was later advertised at a higher rental. Housing advocate Janette Walker has been helping them find emergency housing, as they have had
to move motels twice since losing their house. Kim says she has been looking for rental accommodation since getting notice at their flat, but demand is high and she is continually turned down by agents. “It’s crazy out there. You go to a viewing and there are so many people there… people say they’re getting 100 or more applicants for flats.” She works part-time and says she is ‘thankful’ that she’s eligible for emergency housing assistance, but she and her family really want a house to live in. “I’ve been on the Housing NZ list since February 18. That was our last date in a house.” Kim says there are about 14 other families on the Housing NZ ‘A-list’ and some are in the same motels as her family. Janette says there are many families in that situation, she helped five new families get emergency housing last week.
Nelson health transport A community vehicle service set up to assist residents from Picton and the Marlborough Sounds with medical appointments in Nelson, has been extended to include passengers from Blenheim and Renwick. The Marlborough Sounds Community Vehicle Trust began operating an ‘on demand’ service for passengers from Picton and anywhere along Queen Charlotte Drive and State Highway 6, in August last year. Requests from Blenheim residents for transport resulted in the charitable trust extending the area it services to include residents travelling to Nelson medical appointments and returning to Marlborough following a hospital stay. Passengers wishing to use the community vehicle will need to pay $15 per year to become a member of the Trust, and the cost of a return trip is $40.

Wanaka winner
More than 100 people attended the opening of the Peters Doig Marlborough Art Awards on Saturday night, held at the Yealands Estate Marlborough Gallery. With artists from the breadth of New Zealand this exhibition is certainly a national event. This year’s top award, the Peters Doig Marlborough Art Award went to Paul McLachlan from Wanaka. Judge Suzanne Herschell from Wellington says Paul’s work titled ‘Enclave’ is without doubt a work that achieves voice, evokes emotion, stimulates, questions, initiates dialogue and challenges the viewer to see from a new perspective. Mark Stevenson must have seen similarities as he chose the same piece of work for the Mark Stevenson Patron’s Award. Awards also went to Greg Chaston with ‘Land Ahoy’ for the Marlborough Art Society Award, Tatyana Kulida’s ‘Daffodil day’ for the Nola Hurford Memorial Award, Gwyn Hughes, ‘Evening Muster’ for the James

Build resilient houses, more quakes to come By Cathie Bell The 7.8 earthquake last November was a complex one that produced several world records, geologists told Flaxbourne residents but the question they wanted answered was will there be more big earthquakes? The simple answer to that is yes and get prepared. GNS geologist Russ Van Dissen and Victoria University geologist Tim Little presented the findings of scientists so far, saying the southern Marlborough area is full of faultlines which appear to communicate and be linked. The Kekerengu fault had the largest movement recorded, with land slipping 12
GNS geologist Russ van Dissen.
metres in some places. It also has only the second recorded observation of that slippage, when a couple watched their house lift off its foundations and move nine metres as the fault
underneath it moved. The first observation was in Iran in the nineteenth century. Russ says people should keep building wood-framed houses, with low-weight roofs, such as corrugated iron. “It’s a very resilient construction method.” Building methods need to be fail-safe, he says, as earthquakes should be expected with New Zealand’s position straddling the tectonic plates. “We kind of knew this was going to happen.” He questioned Wellington’s readiness, saying people are relying on ‘100mm of concrete’ to keep floors in place in high-rise buildings.
Strait faults could be linked By Cathie Bell There could be a link between the Kekerengu fault that moved most during last November’s earthquake and the Wairarapa fault that devastated Wellington in 1855, scientists speculate. Victoria University geologist Tim Little told the Rural Support Trust-organised meeting of Flaxbourne residents in Ward last week that when the events on the Kekerengu fault happened, they are often followed by events on the Wairarapa fault, according to charts mapping the events on the faults in the Cook Strait area. “These faults seem to talk to each other.” The 2016 and 1855 events
share things in common, he says. Both entered Cook Strait, they both had large slips, with the Kekerengu fault moving up to 12 metres, and they have similar trajectory. “They may communicate together, they may impact on each other.” It is possible the 1855 earthquake didn’t end in the strait, but ‘closed the gap’ and came down to the Needles fault, lifting the Flaxbourne River, Tim says. “The Needles fault did it this time, lifted the river, and maybe it did in 1855 too.” The lift in 1855 meant that boats couldn’t enter the river anymore to take wool shipments from Flaxbourne
Station, changing farming practices in the area. However, Tim says any link between the two faults is ‘speculative’. The Kekerengu fault is very active with events every few hundred years, while the Wairarapa fault moves on a slower timeline, with a longer period between events. “It doesn’t happen all the time after the Kekerengu one… It doesn’t always go, but when it does go, it’s big.” He says he doesn’t want to be alarmist, but there is going to be future earthquakes, ‘that’s a truism’. “There’s a lot going on in that Lake Grassmere, Cape Campbell area.”

Trust, are concerned at the proposal to relocate the District Health Nurses to the Health Hub in Blenheim. We question the necessity of leaving a purpose built facility to start anew and at great expense, at the Health Hub in the centre of town. Inadequate parking would be an issue as many of the wound clinic patients have mobility issues. Rural patients need to attend the hospital for ongoing appointments and ongoing care from the District Nurses. Does this move mean we would then have to attend two facilities instead of one? As the District Nurses have an important role in the recovery of patients it makes sense to keep them where they belong. In the facility that is new, well thought out and with all the equipment that is needed for these nurses to care for and attend to the needs of the out patients and also in patients. Professional staff are also on hand when needed for a consultation if a problem arises. As a rural patient I can see much unnecessary travel and when one is uncomfortable this adds to patient distress. The hospital based facility is the best. Let’s keep it that way. Pam Thomlinson

Wishy washy council Dear Ed, What a weak wishy washy lot of councillors on MDC! I read an article “No comment: councillors quiet on salmon plan” where they all went ‘mum’ and only Geoff Evans had a comment to relocate salmon farms to areas of high flow. Thank goodness we’ve got Geoff Evans there, strong enough to state an opinion. As for councillor Hook, what a cop-
out saying he wouldn’t comment because he was on the hearings panel for the new Marlborough Environment Plan. Come on Trevor, you can do better than that - I hope. Geoff Evans is right in saying the salmon farms should be relocated into areas of high flow. I hope he is meaning right out of the Sounds into open waters where there is meaningful cur-
rent. The Sounds should not be an industrial area. Mussel farms are bad news in the Sounds anyhow. Why can’t they be sited in open water as happens in the Coromandel? The Sounds have a great economic value in tourism and recreational fishing - don’t wreck that. Percy Parker Blenheim
Older drivers on the road Dear Ed, It’s about time something was done about older drivers on our roads. Older drivers are a pain. Older drivers hog the left hand lane, stick to speed limits, even road work limits and stop at stop
signs, causing much inconvenience to those who want to do what they like. Until older drivers can prove they are proficient at doing dough-nuts, weaving in and out of traffic, changing lanes without indicating, tail-gating, using
drugs, using a hand held cell phone and texting while driving, gathering to do burnouts at night, they should be banned from having a driver’s licence. Don Coyote Blenheim
Annie - what a show! Dear Ed, I went to see the Blenheim Musical Theatre’s production ‘Annie’ on Saturday, and what a show! I was highly impressed with the professional way the cast and orchestra performed, and the obvious enjoyment they had.
It was wonderful to watch. It was clear from all the whoops and hollers from the audience that they were enjoying themselves too, and what a fantastic time out it was for all the families there. I was pleased to see many children enjoying the time with
parents and grandparents at a show with such a lovely message. I would encourage everyone to get tickets and see the show before it finishes on Saturday. ‘Annie’ is too good to miss. Happy theatre goer Blenheim

“I’m looking forward to working closely with the people who are the future of our organisation.”
Warrant Officer Annette Walding (left) with Wing Commander Berni Pothan
Doing the basics well Base Woodbourne’s commander Berni Pothan takes seriously her responsibility to make sure the air force’s newest members are well looked after, she tells reporter Cathie Bell.
It’s been a standing start for Base Woodbourne’s newest commanding officer, with Wing Commander Berni Pothan taking over just as a potential civil defence emergency was pending with Cyclone Cook forecast to cause flooding throughout the district, Anzac Day events, and also the commitments around the Omaka Classic Fighters event as well. The cyclone’s effects on the weather certainly put a dampener on her return. “I’ve spent over half my career in Marlborough. The weather I came home to was not the Marlborough I remembered!” Fortunately, the weather has returned to the clear blue skies and sunshine the district is renowned for. Berni is one part of the allwomen command team at Base Woodbourne.
She and Warrant Officer Annette Walding are Woodbourne Base Commander and Command Warrant Officer respectively, the first time an all-women team has taken over an air force base command team. Although Berni isn’t the first female officer to take a significant lead role on a base, she is the first to be appointed a base commander in the current structure. Likewise, Annette is not the Defence Force’s first female command warrant officer, but this is the first time women have been simultaneously posted into both command positions. The pair have worked together several times before over the past 15 years. Both have a strong ‘people focus’ and are looking forward to joining forces in the Woodbourne training environment.
Base Woodbourne’s primary function is training the Air Force’s newest officers and airmen, and providing most specialist trade training up to advanced and post-graduate level. Berni trained as a teacher, working in the Hawkes Bay and in London, before joining the air force, and education has been the theme of her military career too. It’s s e en h e r p ost e d t o Woodbourne previously in a variety of roles working with the air force’s new recruits who do their basic training at the base. But she has always had her sights high in her career. “Coming back to Marlborough to lead Base Woodbourne has been a career goal for a long time,” she says. “This is a significant senior command appointment, and not many get such an opportunity.
I’m looking forward to working closely with the people who are the future of our organisation.” Base Woodbourne is a community, Berni says, and her job is to care about the people in that community. “I have been out and about meeting everyone on the base. “Base Woodbourne is great, but like everything, we can be even better. It’s about doing that together.” Being base commander is working with people new to the air force organisation, and it’s work she really enjoys. “The air force really does start here.” She sees the base as an integral part of Marlborough’s community. “I’ve been away seven years, it’s not home, but I feel like I’ve come home.”

Drain in the garage floor: This can be handy when cleanup time comes for dogs, cars, kids, etc. Not all areas will allow a garage drain, but if yours does, think about adding one. Mud Room: A small area that can accommodate wet, muddy shoes near a side or back entrance is a must-have for our family. Ideally, this area can be closed off to keep the mess somewhat contained / undetectable. A bonus in this area could be coat hooks, a bench and even a cleanup sink. Wiring for extras like speakers (indoor and outdoor), security systems, etc. Again, whether you add these things on move-in or prep for later, running wire before sheetrock/drywall is way better than after. Most folks think of speaker wire, but not everyone thinks to run the wires to their porch or deck. Heated floors: Heated floors feel like a warm embrace that moves up your whole body. You can even put them in your bathroom. Just imagine how good that will feel when you step out of the warm shower. Dressing room: Don’t stop

at asking for walk-in closets. Build an entire dressing room in your home. The dressing room should include plenty of rods and shelves for clothing and shoes. Home spa: Ask your custom home builder for things like walk-through showers, multiple shower heads, wide ledges around your tub for
seating, soft lighting and even a built-in music system. Driveway alarm: If you have a long driveway leading into your property, a driveway alarm will prove very convenient. You will be alerted when people pull into your driveway so you can take a peak outside and see who is coming.

Hire the right people Make sure your building professionals are right for your project and can confidently meet Building Code requirements. The rules about building change for different types of buildings, what they’re used for and how they’re built. You will need to hire people with suitable skills and experience for your job. You must use licensed people for some residential building and design work. Most plumbing, electrical and gasfitting work must be undertaken by licensed or certified people. Think about whether your project: • Is simple, average or complex • Needs a building consent • Needs a licensed building practitioner (ie involves restricted building work) • Is a renovation or new build • Has more than one ‘use’ (such as a shop, with an apartment attached). It makes sense to use practitioners with suitable experience and skills. They key things are to ask for references, get more than one quote and get a contract or at least on agreement in writing.
It's important to find a builder or company that understands your needs.
When working on a home, a safe, healthy and durable home is important – to your family, finances and future. Some design work and building work to a house, townhouse or small apartment building is so important it must be done or supervised by a licensed building practitioner (LBP). Do your research and ask a lot of questions. It’s important to find a builder or company that understands your needs.

MagicSeal
Joocy Loocy
MagicSeal is a secondary glazing system designed to stop heat loss and reduce condensation and external noise, while at the same time reducing ultraviolet radiation to create a warmer, drier, quieter home. MagicSeal is extremely cost efffective, MagicSeal Marlborough Ltd’s owner Doug Powell says. “Because existing windows do not have to be removed or retro-fitted with completely new glazing, MagicSeal offers a significant cost advantage over conventional double glazing. “Installation is quick, and carried out with minimal disruption to the household so it’s a winner all round”, says Doug. The acrylic glazing used by MagicSeal has much better insulation properties than glass. The W.E.R.S window energy rating scheme rates the MagicSeal system at 5 in a 7-point rating system which measures heating and cooling efficiency. As well as significantly cutting heat loss, he says homeowners will notice a dramatic drop-off in condensation levels, too, and tests have shown external noise reductions of up to 55 per cent are possible. The UV-treated acrylic plexiglass comes with a 30 year warranty against discolouring. Once installed, it is impossible to tell it has been placed over the existing windows. Call Doug today to discuss your needs.

Joocy Loocy Cafe recently celebrated one year in business and owner Guion Philips is happy with how well it has been running. The juice, salad bar and cafe concept has proven to be a hit with customers who enjoy the relaxed atmosphere and unique range of menu options. “We provide a lot of options for people with challenging dietary needs so I try and come up with different options and it’s something I think we do well in,” she says. Joocy Loocy’s menu begins with its popular All Day Breakfast, omelet, eggs benedict, Canadian sardines on sprouted nut and seed loaf and fresh toasted muesli to name a few. For lunches and snacks there is a delicious range of sandwiches with zingy roast beef, ham dagwood and honey mustard chicken, as well as salads and other cabinet options. No menu would be complete without sweets, so Joocy Loocy has taken away the sugar and ‘guilt’ and created a selection of cheesecakes, brownies, puddings and slices. If it’s not a meal you are after, there is an impressive range of smoothies and juices on offer as well as Ritual coffee, iced drinks and White Wabbit premium tea. Open seven days, visit Joocy Loocy and find out for yourself what all the fuss is about.
Furever Friends When beloved pets pass away, what options are available? Marlborough now has its very own pet cremation service. Furever Friends is owned and operated by locals Walter and Gemma Amsler, who launched the business last year and have already helped many pet owners through this very difficult time. They work very closely with all the vet clinics to make the process as stress-free and simple as possible for the owners. What makes Furever Friends unique is that cremations are done individually so pet owners are guaranteed to receive only their pet’s ashes, and it’s specially imported crematorium is capable of taking an animal up to 100kg. Another point of difference is that Furever Friends does same day home collections from pet owners directly, or from local vets. “If your pet passes away then we can come collect it the same day,” Gemma says. “The turnaround is seven days and any home collections are hand delivered back to their owners. “We understand that pets are family members so we treat them as if they are our own, with respect and dignity.” Furever Friends also offers a selection of mahogany and pine wood urns that are handcrafted in New Zealand, with the options of having laser or printed plaque engraving.

Ear Health Marlborough When it comes to travelling overseas, wearing hearing aids or experiencing ear problems there’s one Blenheim clinic that can help - Ear Health Marlborough. Mary Tolan has owned and operated Ear Health Marlborough as an ear nurse specialist now for twelve years. The clinic is also the main one in the region that sees children, Mary says. “It comes down to the microscope I use. It’s very powerful and enables me to look into the tiniest of canals to the ear drum and to work safely, which is important with young children. “In children wax does build up from time to time which can interfere with their learning and speech development and the wax can mask other conditions which can only be identified once the wax is removed.” Mary uses this technology to identify glue ear and provide education on the condition. “This provides reassurance to the parents and it is often necessary then to visit their
GP for treatment.” One issue that commonly affects adults is the build up of wax in the ear. “Maybe you have been feeling tired, stressed and struggling to hear? Then it’s worth coming in to have them checked. “People who use ear plugs at night to help them sleep or to protect their ears from noise will be prone to a wax build up. Many people don’t realise they have a build up until it’s too late and they begin experiencing problems,” she says. Foreign objects are also common in the ear, which Mary can also safely remove. “Moths and other insects can become lodged in the ear canal. Once oil has been put in the ear to stop the insect from moving then it can be safely removed using the microsuction at the clinic.” If you have any concerns about yours and your child’s ear health, contact Ear Health Marlborough for an appointment.

TRACTOR OPERATOR Loveblock Farms Ltd needs a Tractor / ‘can do’ vineyard operator for their family owned vineyard and wine brand in the Dashwood area of the Awatere Valley. Loveblock operates an organic vineyard as part of the farm and vineyard enterprise. There are vineyards with a flat aspect and vineyards on a north facing slope, so not all boring flat stuff. A good work ethic and ‘a glass half full attitude’ are important. Extended hours are often required during the growing season for spraying. You will be involved in making and spreading compost as well as vineyard and machinery maintenance, with some vine work during quieter periods. Experience will be viewed favourably, but training will be given to the right person. Rate of pay depends on person applying. Contact: doug@loveblock.co.nz

SI masters games Marlborough’s under 12 water polo team, ready for this weekend’s tournament.
Water polo big event for juniors By Cathie Bell Marlborough is hosting its firstever water polo tournament for junior players this weekend, organisers say.
Spokesman Martyn Birch says the tournament starts on Friday afternoon at 3pm and runs until 3pm on Sunday. There will be teams from Palmerston North,
Hutt Valley, Canterbury, and Marlborough in the under-12, under-14, and under-16 age groups, he says. Spectators are welcome to attend the tournament, which is to
be held at the Marlborough Lines Stadium 2000. Water polo is a popular sport in Marlborough, with growing interest in the schools’ competition.
Athletes fresh from triumps at the World Masters Games in Auckland earlier this month are being encouraged to think about entering the South Island Masters Games, to be held in Nelson in October.

Eastern States Speedway prizegiving By Celeste Alexander Eastern States Speedway finished its 2016/2017 season with a prizegiving dinner last Saturday night at the Woodbourne Tavern. There were plenty of laughs and friendly banter as well as ‘funny racing’ stories shared among those who attended. Trophies were handed out to those who placed well in points, set lap records and showed improvement in the different classes. New to the trophy lineup was the inaugural Pete Carpenter Memorial Trophy which was presented by Barbara Carpenter, wife of the late Pete Carpenter who passed away last year. Barbara gave an emotional and moving speech about Pete’s lengthy service to ESS and noted that he had not missed a season before his passing. This trophy was awarded to Trich Dixon for ‘dedication to ESS’. She was unfortunately unable to accept it in person, but later said she was ‘very, very honoured and blown away’.

Chatham Cup progression Central Pirates result in the first round of the Chatham Cup with a 3-2 win over Richmond was the headline act of the weekend. Harrison Pine, Sam Boyce and Hamish Turner featured on the scoreboard in what was a great second half. This meant the game against Blenheim Valley United is delayed and The Pirates will be in Chatham Cup action again on the 5th June.
In other first division action, Connor Mathews drove a sharp sword into the Rangers City defense, scoring a late hat trick ensuring victory with a 6-3 win. The other first division game ended in a stalemate between Central and Blenheim Valley Masters. Chris Nott from Central scored first but then a messy corner clearance cost Central as the ball ended up in the net and drew the scores level, 1-1. In division two, Picton Panel and Paint beat newly promoted side Rangers Development 3-2 and Clubs of Marlborough Rangers were 4-0 against Trojans and then got the wobbles but still ended up winners 5-3. Division three saw wins to Picton Crow Tavern Masters with a 4-2 score line against Trojan Spartans and Rangers Masters narrowly beat Redwood Masters 1-0.
Eastern States Speedway driver Hayden Watty was awarded the ‘most improved’ driver in his class during a prizegiving last Saturday night. SpeedNut Photography.
