By Celeste Alexander Springlands School student Amelia Brown had around 36cm of her hair cut off last Friday which was part of a fundraising venture that was raising money for a local family. Amelia has been raising money and the profile of six year old Georgina Westergard-Allen who has been accepted for a spinal surgical procedure at the St. Louis Children’s Hospital in America. Long hair gone for charity Continuted from page 1 The surgery will effectively change Georgina’s life who has diagnosed with a form of cerebral palsy after birth, called Spastic Diplegia which affects her mobility. Georgina’s mother Siobhan spoke to the students that gathered in Amelia’s classroom for her haircut, saying how much the family had raised and how grateful they were to Amelia for her efforts. She said the total cost for the surgery and as-

sociated travel costs are up around $100,000 but even if they got to $60,000 it would be a big help. “We are now sitting between $30,000 and $40,000 thanks to recent fundraising activities and an anonymous donation of $5000 that was made to our Givealittle page. “It’s definitely within reach and we are just so grateful for everyone’s support. “It still blows me away every day,” she says. Amelia originally set a goal to raise $150 for Georgina, and pledged to donate her hair to the

Cancer Society to be made into a wig. She has now raised around $2000 and is still collecting donations. Her teacher Ruth Lingham who was present along with her class says it’s ‘amazing to see how Amelia has taken a stand to help another child’. “Just seeing how someone so young is making a difference by taking steps on her own to organise this is really humbling.” Donations can be made on the Givealittle page, by searching for ‘georginasjourney’.

By Cathie Bell St Mary’s Preschool is a ‘unique’ place to work, and she’s going to miss it, Hazel says. “It’s a real big part of me. “I’m really excited about my new challenge and my new job, but I’m going to find it very difficult to say goodbye. I’ve loved every minute of working here.” St Mary’s Preschool is not just a preschool ‘sitting on its own’, she says, it’s part of a wider community, ‘and when you work here, you really feel that, it’s nurturing and caring’. “That’s why I came here. I thought it would be a nice place to work…And here I am, 23 years later.” She has come to know ‘an awful lot of families’ since starting at the preschool, and says it is a ‘huge privilege’ to be part of hundreds of children’s learning experiences. Boa rd of gove r nor s chairwoman Kate Gaines says Hazel will be greatly missed. “She has made a fantastic

contribution to our preschool over the past 23 years. “We wish her the very best.” The preschool will host a farewell for Hazel next month, Kate says. Recruitment for a new principal has begun. Catholic parish priest Father John Pearce says Hazel and her team have created a wonderful environment at St Mary’s. “I find it amazing that, where some parishes are considering this ministry, here at St Mary’s it has been happening for nearly a quarter of a century.” Hazel’s resignation means there has been a complete change in leadership of Catholic education in the Marlborough parish. St Mary’s School principal Alistair Bridgman left last year, St Joseph’s School in Picton principal Jennie Wheeler leaves at the end of Term 2, and St Joseph’s School in Kaikoura principal Mary Grey leaves at the Hazel Shapcott, with St Mary’s Preschoolers Joshua Gleeson, Alex Partridge, Ryan Foong, Jackson end of Term 3. Business group’s flight fight

inbrief

By Cathie Bell Marlborough people need to band together to fight hard to get Air New Zealand to restore direct flights between Blenheim and Christchurch, a retailers’ group says. The Blenheim Business Association’s annual meeting on Monday night launched the group’s campaign, and members say government ministers need to be ‘bombarded with letters’ to get action. The association’s sub-committee of Peter Scott and Toni Gillan is looking at getting more flights into Marlborough Airport, particularly in getting Air New Zealand to restore direct flights between Blenheim and Christchurch. That route was dropped by the airline last October, with Air NZ citing low passenger numbers as the cause. The airline had replaced the 19-seat Beechcraft planes with 50-seat Q300s. Many people say the flights were at times that didn’t suit travellers. Peter says the cause ‘might be a tough ask’. Monday’s meeting was a chance to gauge support, and the members present backed it. One says this is ‘the very moment we need to step up’.

NMIT head resigns

The Sun

“This winter is going to be tough for businesses, this region needs it now. The road is very fragile. It’s going to be closed lots this winter.” Toni says the implications for Blenheim from the loss of flights between Christchurch and Blenheim are ‘very big’. “People are travelling to Nelson, we don’t know when the road south is going to re-open.” Sounds Air has ‘really stepped up’ since the earthquake shut State Highway One south, she says, but there is a need for more flights and Air New Zealand should be back. “It’s quite political.” Retailer and Marlborough District Councillor Michael Fitzpatrick says the council is ‘actively working’ on the issue, but it needs every organisation in town to join in. “The Marlborough Chamber of Commerce, this organisation, everyone needs to be pushing in the right direction.” He says people need to ‘bombard’ the minister of transport and tourism with letters about it. Association chairman Anthony Mullen says the groups need to get together with council to ‘get a general consensus Blenheim Business Association’s Peter Scott and Toni Gillan that this is the road we go down’. are leading the charge for more flights.

Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology chief executive Tony Gray has resigned to become chief executive of the Ara Institute of Canterbury, NMIT chairman Daryl Wehner says. After eleven years at NMIT, Tony is taking up the new role in Christchurch in September.

More Cook funding The Government has allocated another $5 million over the next two years for the First Encounters 250 commemoration which will include a focus on Captain Cook’s stay in Ship Cove in Queen Charlotte Sound.

SH63 bridge re-opens The Wye River bridge on the alternate South Island state highway route in the Wairau Valley has re-opened to traffic, following urgent work carried out this week to repair damage sustained when the bridge was struck by a truck ten days ago. NZ Transport Agency Earthquake Recovery Manager Steve Mutton says crews have worked hard all week to get the job done, and all vehicles can safely use the bridge with a speed restriction of 30km/h.

Health board grows focus groups By Cathie Bell Consultants will hold three consumer focus groups over the next 10 days as part of a district-wide review of district nursing, the district health board says. Health board manager community and planning Cathy O’Malley says it was decided to have three meetings so a range of times and dates could be provided for the participants. “We want to hear from people who have both accessed services at the hospital and at home, to get a full understanding of the way the district nursing service operates currently. “We are also meeting with district nursing staff and hospital staff to hear their views about the way the service operates.” An email survey is offered as an alternative to the in-person focus group, for a small number of people who are unable to attend a meeting in person, Cathy says. “We are doing this on a case-by-case basis.” Chief executive Peter Bramley says it is clear the health board leadership team didn’t have a clear idea of what district nurses did in each community in its district. “One of the things becoming apparent, I suspect the review will highlight, it is not just the community that rely on them but also some of our hospital services.” He told people at public meetings held in Blenheim last Wednesday that the health board is now reviewing district nursing across the health board’s region, with consultants carrying out focus groups in different communities and interviewing nurses, patients, and their families to understand the work

Public clear on district nurses

1

$ 00

Cathy O’Malley.

By Cathie Bell Marlborough people have given district health board senior management clear statements about the value of district nurses and their location in Wairau Hospital. The Nelson Marlborough District Health Board proposed last month it will move district nurses from the hospital into the Queen Street health hub in central Blenheim, a move which caused controversy amongst staff and patients. Public meetings last week to discuss the health board’s primary health care strategy were dominated by the issue, with some people warning of trouble if the move went ahead. Blenheim man Reg Taylor, a regular patient of the nurses, warned chief executive Peter Bramley he would be kicking over a hornet’s nest and ‘you’ll get stung’. James Gropp told the evening public meeting his training as an engineer gave him a ‘systems’ view of the issue. Primary health care groups based at the health hub seem to be working on ‘preventative’ health issues, where the district nurses seem to be working on ‘reactive’ health issues, following up on hospital care, he says. “My fundamental question is what percentage of district nurse work is proactive versus reactive post-care? “This hub sounds more on proactive prevention, education care. If 80 per cent of district nurse work is reactive, post-hospital care, it doesn’t seem to make sense to be here.” • Were you at the meetings? Tell the Sun what you think: news@blenheimsun.co.nz

Lease speciaLs Massey University deputy pro vice-chancellor professor Chris Gallavin, with Marlborough Boys’ College head boy Seth Robinson and deputy head boy Anaru Anderson.

Professor visits old school By Cathie Bell Young people need to form opinions and defend them, rather than just be led by others, a former Marlborough Boys’ College studentturned law professor says. Chris Gallavin, who is Massey University’s deputy pro vice-chancellor, spoke to students on Friday afternoon. In a wide-ranging and provocative speech, he encouraged them to engage with issues and people, saying that unless people talked to each other, disputes couldn’t be resolved. Technology and society are changing rapidly and young people needed to develop

the people skills and critical analysis skills that will be needed to do well in the future. “You need to have an opinion, stand for something, think about it, but also, don’t close your mind to other people’s opinions… Expect to be held to account for your opinion. “The majority of people are sheep. Things happen to them, they don’t make things happen.” Chris says he was a student at Marlborough Boys’ College in the 1980s. “I wasn’t the best of students then.” Coming from a small town is no impediment to changing the world, he says.

Pattern animals make it to NZ art show By Celeste Alexander Local artist Bonnie Coad is thrilled with being accepted into the New Zealand Art Show that’s being held in Wellington this weekend. This is the second year in a row she has been accepted which is ‘an achievement’ she says. “It’s difficult to get in as the show is very careful about choosing a diverse selection of art. “Over the course of the weekend my art will be displayed and the biggest advantage of being part of this show is raising my profile. “This show is one of the better known shows with people actively buying original

artwork,” she says. Bonnie has submitted pieces from her unique Pattern Animals series. She uses a collage technique using pattern instructions which are glued and layered with paint within a brightly painted coloured animal. Her art has been described as being ‘unique, humorous, modern contemporary art work with a retro twist’. She is also currently working on art works for an up and coming show at Detour Gallery on Market Street, Blenheim.

Spring Creek King Salmon Traffic Dear Ed, With reference to two letters concerning the unneeded roundabout at Spring Creek, it is interesting to see there is currently a temporary 50kms per hour speed limit instead of the previous 70kms per hour. 50kms per hour is ideal and you don’t need a roundabout. Yes I agree state highway is government, but surely Marlborough Roads a-la Marlborough District Council made some input? Are you for ever waiting for things to happen? Yes, computers do slow down over time, this is quite natural and the good news is that it can be remedied. Just like a car computers need a certain amount of maintenance which if not done will lead to “slooow computer” syndrome. If you have recently had ultrafast broadband installed and things aren’t happening as fast as you think they should let us give your computer a good service and clean out, even if you are still on ordinary broadband your computer will thank you for it.

Dear Ed, It strikes me as somehow not right that the Ministry of Primary Industries - a government department - has given $1 million to King Salmon as assistance towards their application for new sites for salmon farms. A couple of principles spring to mind:1. MPI is a public service department. Who is it serving, a foreign owned corporate or the public? 2. If it gives $1 million to King Salmon, to be fair, should it not assist say Guardians of the Sounds and/or Kenepuru Residents Assn., with $1 million in their submission? Incidentally I belong to neither of these. 3. King Salmon is wealthy, majority owned by the powerful Tiong dynasty of Malaysia. Organisations like the two above are far from wealthy! It is time for a thorough assessment of aquaculture. The Sounds are a tourist and recreational resource not one for cluttering up and visually polluting with industrial fish farms. I note King Salmon are spinning stories at furious pace in the media. I guess they can afford to but why is the media at large so receptive? Kahawai Kaye Blenheim

Reg Taylor talks to health board chief executive Peter Bramley.

District Nurses Dear Ed, I attended the meeting at the Health Hub where Peter Bramley spoke for three-quarters of an hour on ways in which the Primary Health Organisation are working to keep the community well in their homes. The district nurses’ proposed shift was discussed at the last stage of the meeting. A member of the public stood up and said: The PHO work towards prevention... proactive which is good (primary health). The district nurses’ work is .... reactive, which is (secondary health) thus requiring close contact with surgeons, laboratory, pharmacy, GPs and Nurse Specialists. I thought he ‘hit the nail on the head’. Annie Lomax. Rarangi

He has the same number 8 wire mentality and determination. He is forever modifying bits in his shed which is essential for him really, buying new parts can be an expensive exercise,” she says. Brett has been racing his saloon car for a few years at ESS now, prior to that he was involved in go kart racing. “There’s a big difference in horse power now,” he laughs. Last season saw Brett race his new super saloon, a Kuriger chassis and Corvette C5 body painted in his signature ‘dark beer bottle green’ colour. He purchased it Waitangi Day last year and spent the off-season building it up and dropping in the

350 Chevy engine that is estimated to put out around 500 horsepower. It wasn’t a straight forward process however, Brett was also busy finalising his engineering apprenticeship with Spring Creek Engineering at the time while working 10 hour days. “I do the majority of the work to it myself, except for the engine build. I have help from my family too which is great. That’s the best part about speedway, it’s about family,” he grins. As the 2016/2017 speedway season began Brett hit the track with the hope that the car would perform well but unfortunately he had ongoing problems that brought him almost to the point of ‘chucking it all in’. “Yeah, I almost chucked in the towel at one point. It can get frustrating when the car continually has problems. “I would get it home and it would run fine, but then when back out on the track it wouldn’t run right. He visited Feebee to explain his frustrations and desire to ‘give it

“It can get frustrating when the car continually has problems.” all up’, but being close to the family it was the last thing she wanted to see him do. “I’m so proud of this young man and found it humbling to watch him work hard to finalise his engineering apprenticeship last year while dealing with ongoing issues, but there was no way I was going to see him give up. “I decided I would double my sponsorship for his racing to help him out and I put him in contact with someone I know, Bryan Parris who was an A grade mechanic and used to race stock cars and rally cars,” Feebee says. Brett says he spent hours on the phone with Bryan filling up pages and pages of notes from the suggestions he made.

“One issue I was having was overheating... no matter what I did I couldn’t find the problem. “Bryan suggested I use a computer fan on the coil in the dizzy to help cool it. It costs next to nothing and it worked. “It’s this kind of advice that really helps and doesn’t cost me an arm and a leg,” he laughs. Brett has also added other modifications such as using a Toyota Corolla alternator out of a mate’s car and have it run backwards. “When I found out they can run backwards I knew it would fit and work... and it’s still going good now. I’m still running on the same tyres, I haven’t needed to replace them yet which is good... that’s another expense.

“I also made windows at the rear of the saloon out of clear perspex from an old tree house window my siblings and I used to play in as kids,” he laughs. All of his efforts paid off and he went on to record some faster lap times and win a number of trophies. At the recent ESS prizegiving he was also nominated by the club for the most improved driver in the saloon class. Brett is busy again tinkering away in his shed preparing to give the saloon car a ‘general tidy up’ and a few minor modifications for next season. “It can’t be much worse than last year so hopefully it all goes smoothly this time around.”

Honours awarded People who got honours from the Queen awarded in the New Year’s Honours List announced last January received their medals from Governor-General Dame Patsy Reddy at special ceremonies in Wellington last week. Included in those are former Marlborough mayor Alistair Sowman for local government

service, Picton man Peter Yarrell for services to sport, and rugby stalwart Lyall Daines for services to rugby refereeing. Alistair says the ceremony was ‘very nice’. “It was made better in that her husband Sir David Gascoigne is a Marlborough Boys’ College old boy, so we had a bit to talk about.”

Still time to view winning art By Celeste Alexander For those who have yet to view the artworks that made it into the finals for the Peters Doig Marlborough Art Awards, you still have time. The awards exhibition being held at the Yealands Estate Marlborough Gallery is still running and does not finish until June 11. Publicity officer Walter Scott says there is a wide variety of work in all mediums, including some by eight local artists. “It’s great to be able to see the calibre of artists that made the finals for the awards, and despite the local artists chosen not winning a prize, you can see the standard is right up there.” Of the local artists, mother and daughter Vai Yealands and Danielle Yealands both made the finals with their entries which are strikingly different to one another, Walter says.

“Really, in general there is a real variety throughout the whole exhibition that are high quality and imaginative.” The winners of this year’s Peters Doig Marlborough Art Awards which can be viewed at the exhibition are: Peters Doig Grand Prize Award - Paul McLachlan with ‘Enclave’, graphite on paper Marlborough Art Society Award - Greg Chaston with ‘Land Ahoy’, oil on canvas Nola Hurford Memorial Award - Tatyana Kulida with ‘Daffodil Day’, oil on marble Marl Stevenson Patron’s Award - Paul McLachlan with ‘Enclave’, graphite on paper James Framing Award - Gwyn Hughes with ‘Evening Muster’, oil New Zealand Artist Magazine Awards - Sunshee Shin with ‘Buzzy Bee with Friends’, oil.

Charles Dickens’ descendant in Picton British author Lucinda Hawksley is to speak in Picton on Saturday, her only engagement outside Auckland’s Writers Festival last week. She will present on Charles Dickens and his circle, a subject close to her as she is Charles Dickens’ great-great-greatgranddaughter. Lucinda Hawksley is an author and broadcaster, whose books include three biographies of three 19th-century artists Lizzie Siddal, Kate Perugini, and Princess Louise. Her new book, Charles Dickens and his Circle, looks at the world of her great-great-greatgrandfather and his intriguing group of friends. Signs to slow drivers The Marlborough District Council has extended 40 km speed limit zones to seven more schools around the district, with new warning signs being installed to reinforce the message to motorists to cut their speed near schools when children are on the road in big numbers. New bright yellow advisory signs will warn drivers to keep their speed down to 40 km/h when travelling past St Marys School on Stephenson Street, Mayfield School on Hutcheson Road and Lansdowne Street, Rai Valley School on State Highway Six, Havelock School on State Highway Six, Spring Creek School on Ferry Road, Grovetown School on Vickerman Street, and Renwick School on State

Highway Six and Havelock Road. The 40km signs are already installed outside schools at Raupara, Springlands, Redwoodtown, Whitney Street, Witherlea, Waikawa Bay and Linkwater. The signs encourage drivers to understand the need for extreme care around schools, particularly at pickup and drop-off times, says Marlborough District Council Assets and Services Committee chairman Terry Sloan. “It’s about raising driver awareness and keeping our youngsters safe; children are not always predictable so drivers need to be prepared for the risk of a sudden swerving bicycle or someone stepping out from behind a parked car.”

By Cathie Bell Another 18 Marlborough residents became citizens last week, including a British family and a budding cricket player. British man David Underwood says his wife Sandra Boyd was the prompt for them to take up New Zealand citizenship. The family has been in New Zealand for 11 years and one son, Aston, is a New Zealander. David, Sandra, and older son Reef became citizens on Friday. Fifteen year-old Ben Ben Ivory-McCullum gets his citizenship from mayor John Leggett. Ivory-McCullum became a citizen, having been born in Australia to New Zealand parents and living there until he was eight. He says he always thought he was a New Zealander as both his parents were, but he wasn’t. His father, Ross McCullum, says Ben won’t be going back to Australia as they have no family there. Ben is a keen cricket player, and Ross says if he wants to play for New Zealand, he needs to get his citizenship Reef Underwood gets his citizenship from mayor John Leggett sorted. while dad David Underwood and mum Sandra Boyd look on.

With a combination of mild electrical stimulation behind the ear and hypnosis, local woman Chris Steadman is helping many people to kick their hard-to-beat habits. Her business, Ntrance Clinic on Redwood Pass Road combines both therapies to treat multiple clients for a variety of problems including smoking addiction, eating disorders and weight loss. She names these three as the top areas she is finding the most demand. “How it works, the electrical stimulation I use is totally painless and puts the parts I’m trying to help on the back burner, so that the relaxation therapy and mind management can work the most effectively. Chris herself has experienced this success

after escaping her own tobacco addiction in the 1970s. She went on to research the subject and found therapists using electrostimulation and hypotherapy, however she couldn’t find a practitioner in New Zealand using both together. After intensive research she opened her clinic and has gone on to successfully treat many clients. Another area she works in is Virtual Gastric Banding (VGB) after training with Shelia Grainger, the world’s leading exponent in this practice. Now certified, Chris offers totally noninvasive and risk free VGB to the public. “It’s a nice, gentle treatments and I’m still completely astounded at the success I have,” she says.

Kennard passes over co-driver role By Cathie Bell Injured World Rally Championship co-driver John Kennard has been forced to pass over his role with Hayden Paddon to new codriver Sebastian Marshall. Kennard, a Blenheim-based vineyard owner, was to finish his competitive career alongside Paddon at Rally Finland and Marshall, who has worked with Hyundai Motorsport for several years, was announced as Kennard’s replacement. He was forced to step aside from his co-driving duties in last fortnight’s Rally de Portugal due to a hip injury, and unfortunately, his hip has not had enough time to recover in time for the next event in Sardinia. With just two more rallies – Poland and Finland – before Marshall is in the car full-time with Paddon, Kennard says he feels it is best for Paddon to continue with Marshall to build the new partnership for the future. “Unfortunately my hip’s condition still won’t allow me to take on the rough gravel of Sardinia

and while I’d dearly love to get back in the car to finish my WRC career with Hayden in Poland and Finland, it really wouldn’t make any sense,” he says. “We’ve had a terrible start to the year, so it’s most important to grab some positivity and move forward in the last half of the season. We’ve already seen a spark of that with Hayden and Seb in Portugal, so I’m sure by staying together they can keep it going and they’ll be back on the podium very soon, where I’ll be with them in spirit.” Paddon says it was not an easy decision. “But it’s something we all feel is best for the future and something that John is very supportive of and recommends himself. “As we’ve said all along, even though he won’t be in the car, John continues to play an important role in our World Rally Championship programme. John will be at all WRC events this year, supporting us on the gravel rallies and helping us as our

gravel crew on the tarmac rallies. “I’m very pleased that John will co-drive for me when we’re back in New Zealand contesting the Coromandel round of the New Zealand Rally Championship in our Hyundai i20 AP4+ car. “We’re also looking forward to a special send-off at Rally

Finland, an event that has special relevance and importance to John’s career.” Paddon and Marshall line up for their next WRC event with Hyundai Motorsport on the Italian island of Sardinia, running 8-11 June.

Karting champs this weekend The second day of the GK Karts Sunbelt sprint championship will be held on Sunday at the Cresswell Electrical Raceway. K a r t spor t Ma rlborough spokesman Neil Butts says karters from Auckland to Invercargill will be racing in this event which has been going for over 30 years. “With over 80 kart drivers entered in over seven classes, there should be action aplenty.” There are ‘high quality’ visiting drivers taking part, he says, including current Cadet Rok first in New Zealand Louis Sharp, Mini Rok first in New Zealand Jacob Douglas, as well as Rotax Heavy second in New Zealand Aaron Black, and in the Open Class second in New Zealand Matt Butchart and third in New

Zealand Chris Cox. Neil says local driver Arthur Broughan will be racing in his first Sunbelts in the Junior Cadet Class. “ In the Junior Rotax Class, the well-travelled William Exton should be at the pointy end of the field, also Bob Marr and recent winner of the Twilight series Sam Bugler will be looking for strong results. In the Seniors Daniel Bugler will be racing in the Rotax Light. “Neil Butts and Peter Richardson will be racing in the Rotax Heavies which is the largest field of the meet with 19 karts topping 100km down the main straight. “The newest class to karting is the Briggs Super 4’s where Tim Evans will be competing.” Racing starts at 10.30am on Sunday.

Rallying honour Marlborough Car Club members Hugh and Lloyd Owen received Historic Heritage Awards at MotorSport New Zealand’s annual awards night last Saturday. The awards, held at Te Papa in Wellington on Saturday, recognise the achievements of competitors, officials, volunteers and media at all levels of four-wheeled motor sports in New Zealand each year.

Thursday run The Marlborough Harrier Club is holding a pack/training run or walk tomorrow evening, leaving from the clubrooms at Oliver Park on the corner of Weld and Cleghorn Streets at 6pm. Reflector gear is compulsory. Joggers and walkers regardless of ability are welcome. Everyone is invited to participate.

Sam Bugler in action winning the recent twilight series.

Local drivers heading to Chrischurch rally Eight rally drivers from the Marlborough Car Club will be heading to Christchurch this weekend for the Lone Star Canterbury Rally. The Lone Star Canterbury Rally is the third round of the Brian Green Property Group 2017 New Zealand Rally Championship and the Mainland Rally Series. The event features stages on the local county roads and forest stages. It attracts NZ’s best drivers to compete in numerous categories for the prestigious MotorSport NZ sanctioned rally championship titles. This year there are six rounds, each with a

unique character reflecting the diverse regions from Northland to Otago. Representing the Marlborough region are the following drivers and their co-drivers. Richard Bateman/Jordyn Smith; Jason Clark/ Tracey Clark; Fred Merkin/Sandra Everson; Lloyd Owen/Jonty Brenssell; David Taylor/ Pania Huntley; Steve Cattermole/Sharrise Guckert; Nigel Tyson/Julie Parry; Allan Kermeen/Darryn Green. The rally consists of 196 kms of special stages, made up of 10 competitive stages with stages Renwick man Steve Cattermole with conine and 10 held in darkness at the end of the driver Sharrise Guckert in his Datsun 1200. day, and 240 kms of touring. Photography by Rebecca Maling.

Speed skaters on route here By Celeste Alexander There will be a Speed Skating competition held in Blenheim over Queen’s Birthday weekend, attracting over 50 skaters from Nelson, Timaru and Whanganui. Organisers say last year it attracted around 50 skaters and that number is expected to be similar again. It begins on Saturday afternoon

at 1pm at Riverlands Industrial Estate where skaters will be doing 100m sprints and 100m rolling starts. Once completed skaters then head to Athletic Park for some distance racing. On Sunday from 8.30am - 4pm they will be racing at Stadium 2000 and on Monday they will be at the Marlborough Kart Track racing from 9am for a marathon.

Tennis victory Marlborough’s junior tennis players reclaimed the Gardiner Trophy from their Nelson counterparts for the first time since 2013, winning 38-18 last Sunday. Marlborough had earlier in the season defeated Nelson in both the Malcolm Shield 14 and under competition and the Blair Cup 18 and under fixtures, meaning Marlborough teams completed a clean sweep for the first time since the 2012-13 season.

Central Pirates back on top Central Pirates are back on top of the division 1 football standings after the weekends action beating Rangers City 2-0 with Alex Duley and Harrison Pine scoring in the first half to seal it. Blenheim Valley Cobras would be very disappointed having been thrashed by Central 5-1 after being top of the table. Central went into the break with a 3-0 cushion and added another two in the second half to end 5-1. Richie Marsden struck twice while the veteran Greg Stretch scored from the spot in what would end a

five year scoring drought according to his fellow players. Blenheim Valley Masters were too good for club mates’ United winning 2-1 with Ben Clarke scoring both goals for Masters. In the second division Clubs of Marlborough Rangers overturned the first round loss to Blenheim Valley Woodbourne, beating them 2-1. Matt Millar scored both at the far post after some great lead up play. Trojans will be happy with their time on the pitch as they beat Picton Panel and Paint 4-3. In the

third division Rangers United drew with Rangers Masters 1-1, while Trojans Spartans capped off a good day for the club beating Redwood Masters 7-1.
