Dig in By Cathie Bell A small forest of native trees is to be planted this weekend by Scouts and their friends. About 2500 small trees have been donated to Marlborough by Scouts New Zealand’s new sponsor Champion Freight, and they are to be planted out in a community event on Sunday. Marlborough has been chosen as the first planting site because the national jamboree here last summer was so successful. Continued on page 2 Scouts Nicholas Jackson, Ethan Gander, Harry Osgood, Mark Jackson, and George Manson ready to plant trees.

New sponsor provides trees for carbon offset Continued from page 1 The small forest of trees to be planted is part of a national programme by Scouts New Zealand. Scouts New Zealand has a new sponsorship partner - Champion Freight, a 100 per cent New Zealand owned and operated freight forwarding company, which specialises in international sea freight.

They have committed to offsetting their carbon footprint by planting one tree for each container they ship. As part of these, they have donated 2500 native trees to plant in Marlborough, and Scouts New Zealand is looking for volunteers to help plant out the trees. Local scout representative Wayne Gander says about 50 scouts from

round Marlborough will be there, and another 50 are coming over from Nelson especially to plant the trees. He says the planting is quite appropriate as it is about sustaining the outdoors. “Scouts spend a lot of time out there.” The planting is happening on Sunday, June 11 between 10am and 2pm.

People interested should register by email to partnerships@scouts.org.nz and meet at the Churchward Park Scout Hall at Churchward Park, off Maxwell Road and Taylor Pass Road, with sturdy shoes, warm clothes, a hat, a bottle of water, a spade, and lots of energy. Lunch will be provided for all helpers on the day.

Govt to turn motel into home for homeless By Cathie Bell The Brydan on Rose motel in Springlands is to be turned into emergency housing for families as housing advocates say there are 42 families living in motels. The Ministry for Social Development has applied for resource consent to turn the 17-room motel into residential accommodation for up to 47 people, saying the proposal will result in the accommodation of family and individuals with a high and urgent housing need. It expects tenants to stay about three months. The consent is needed for the minis-

try to buy the property. “While the individual units are compact, they will provide a range of housing options to a growing section of the community that is finding it increasingly difficult to obtain private accommodation.” A ministry spokesman was unavailable for comment yesterday, but Crossroads co-ordinator Janette Walker says Crossroads and the Methodist Mission will run the facility. “The public can rest assured this will be a very well-run and well-managed facility… It is going to make a difference to people’s lives.” There are 42 families living in motels

scattered around Blenheim, Janette says, and from mid-August, if due diligence on this project goes through, they will be brought together in one place, with social workers and tenancy managers to help them progress their lives. She says the ministry has also bought some houses in Blenheim as well. “They see there is a problem here in Blenheim and they need to do something about it…It’s taken them long enough.” More state houses are needed, Janette says, as there is a real shortage of housing. She says she expects families will

need to have more than just three months in the proposed facility because of that housing shortage. “Scattering people in motels is not an answer. They need support, they need wrap-around services so their lives can progress, rather than just put people in a holding pattern.” The ministry said last month it was looking for more houses. “In Blenheim we have signalled that we are looking to purchase an additional 50 social housing places, including 30 one-bedroom, and 20 two-bedroom places to ensure that stock better meets anticipated demand.”

Francis Street Medical joins kids’ scheme By Cathie Bell Children under 13 years of age can now get free medical care from any doctor in Marlborough, except at the after-hours clinic at Wairau Hospital. Francis Street Medical general manager Anna Young confirmed to the Sun the practice has now joined the children’s scheme.

She says the practice’s decision not to run with the under-13s free scheme when it was launched was based on capacity issues, rather than financial gain. “In February of this year we were delighted to welcome a new doctor to the practice. “In our fully-staffed capacity we felt able

to cope with the increased demand that being a part of the scheme may bring about.” Francis Street Medical joined the scheme mid-February, Anna says. The Government funds the medical treatment of children under the age of 13 years so there is no financial barrier to parents getting help for sick children.

CDs flood in Last Friday the Sun published a story about Pam Bowron who was appealing for the donation of CDs for Daffodil House in Christchurch. Within hours of the Sun office opening the first bag of CDs was brought in. More people continued to come in yesterday in a steady stream. Good quality CDs of all music genres can be left at The Sun office for Pam to collect on June 20.

Council buys old Club site The old Marlborough Club building in Russell Terrace has been bought by the Marlborough District Council for $1.33 million. Previously owned by the Clubs of Marlborough, the old Marlborough Club sits alongside the Convention Centre and fronts on to the Taylor River Reserve. The site covers 1717 square metres, with about 700 square metres of buildings and 15 car parks. In a newsletter to Clubs of Marlborough members, president Gordon Herkt says the decision to sell the building was made after trying for 18 months unsuccessfully to lease it. The sale will save the club $90,000 a year, he says. “The sale price has been determined by valuation undertaken by a firm of registered valuers, which takes account of the muchneeded exterior and interior maintenance the property needs.” The council has first right of refusal to purchase the property, and mayor John Leggett says the council will look for a private sector tenant to bring a new use to the building. He says commercial agents have told council that with ‘a tidy up’, they should be able to get tenants. “The site has great potential for a hotel or it could be used for expansion of the Convention Centre at some time in the future. There are many other possibilities too. Property like this does not come on to the market very often – it’s a unique site right in the heart of our arts and convention hub.” John says the purchase was a forward-thinking decision about the longer term development options for this part of town. “It’s very much in the public interest for

Council buys land The Marlborough District Council has bought land at at 309 Taylor Pass Road, on the immediate boundary of the Bluegums landfill to provide an expanded buffer area between the Blenheim landfill and residential property. The land would also provide a site for a pyrolysis timber treatment plant, one of the projects in the council’s annual plan. Council solid waste manager Alec McNeil says it’s a strategic investment, at a cost of $4.37 million, which will provide security for Blenheim’s waste management operations well into the future. “As Blenheim and Marlborough grow, it’s likely we’ll need to expand our waste and recycling and potentially introduce new services, including composting and other initiatives.”

Concert tickets giveaway Mayor John Leggett in front of the old Marlborough Club building.

Council to be able to determine what is eventually built there. “It may be that the site is retained by Council for only a short time or it may be a longer period – it will depend on what interest there is from the private sector and from the Convention Centre as to its future use.” The council will consider as part of its Long Term Plan selling some of its commercial property in Blenheim, he says. “We have always said we will sell the Queen Street building.”

The New Zealand Symphony Orchestra is offering The Sun readers the chance to win a double pass to attend its June 20 concert at the ASB Theatre in Blenheim. People who would like to attend the Schumann & Barber concert, conducted by James Feddeck, described as one of the fastest rising American conductors of the decade, and acclaimed German cellist Daniel Müller-Schott, should email news@blenheimsun.co.nz with your name and contact details by 5pm on June 12 to be in the draw for the tickets.

The council also owns the Kathmandu building on Scott Street, the Smith City building next to the Stadium 2000, and the carpark building on Alfred Street. John says the council only had a short period to consider the Marlborough Club purchase. And the decision was not unanimous, he says. “There was good discussion around the council table, with a majority of councillors considering this to be a solid, strategic investment in the public interest which should not be allowed to slip past.”

The board of trustees of St Joseph’s Catholic School in Picton are to ask the Minister of Education to close the school. In the Catholic parish newsletter last weekend, the school says that with just two pupils and no teacher after 7 July 2017, the Board, as the governing body and employer of the school, are forced into an untenable position. “It is with deep regret and sadness the board of trustees will now ask the Minister for Education and the Proprietor to initiate the process of the cancellation of the integration agreement of St Joseph’s School Picton. “This follows our unanimous decision, together with Father John as the parish priest, on this matter.” The community consultation held on May 15 about the school’s future was positive and

board chairwoman Lisa Bhandal says the meeting attended by about 20 people went ‘pretty well’. The parish newsletter says they were ‘grateful for the good number of people who supported this meeting and for the wide range of thoughts shared’. “The general feeling at the meeting was one of support for St Joseph’s School. “Whilst this is our dearest wish, the Board of Trustees significant and repeated efforts to secure a permanent teaching principal over the last three years have been unsuccessful.” As the school roll has now dropped to two pupils and it won’t have a teacher after July 7, there is no choice but to close, it says. “This is not a simple or quick process.”

By Cathie Bell May was a sunny month for Marlborough, with 205.4 hours of sunshine recorded, bringing Blenheim up to second in the sunniest town rankings. Data collected from the weather station at the Grovetown business park shows last month is now the fourth sunniest May on record for Blenheim for the 88 years of data recorded from 1930 to 2017. Plant and Food Research scientist Rob Agnew, who collates the data, says May 2017 recorded well above average sunshine, cooler than average temperature and slightly below average rainfall. Blenheim is currently sitting in second position behind Whakatane, for total sunshine hours so far in 2017.

“Richmond is hard on Blenheim’s heels.” The first five months of 2017 have recorded significantly more rain than in the two previous years, Rob says, and soil moisture is up because of that. Total rainfall for the five months January to May 2017 was 324.6 mm; 129 per cent of the long-term average of 251.0 mm, he says. High rainfall in the first half of April this year meant that the soil moisture at the beginning of May was substantially higher, with soil moisture at the five to 35 centimetre depth on 1 May at 32.3 per cent. “With a number of rain events during May, and little evaporation, soil moisture on 31 May had risen to 36.1 per cent. This is close to field capacity for the top soil at this site.”

Book Festival tickets selling fast The Marlborough Book Festival has sold out of five sessions, with another two near full. Festival committee member Sharon Hill says the event is on the last weekend of July, but people have been getting in quick to buy tickets, ‘perhaps having missed out in previous years’. Sharon says with more authors and events than ever before, the strong ticket sales indicate a great line up of authors, as well as a growing interest in readers and writers festivals.

“Every year we hear from people who didn’t know what to expect, but loved hearing conversations with authors in beautiful parts of Marlborough. It gives us real confidence in the future of the festival.” There are still tickets remaining for 15 sessions, with everything from poetry to craft beer under discussion, she says. “And our Australian dinosaur expert John Pickrell is a pretty exciting addition this year.” For more information or ticket sales, go to www.marlboroughbookfest.co.nz.

Tickets lead to great prizes By Celeste Alexander Blenheim Playcentre need to upgrade some of its outdoor play area to keep in line with health and safety regulations, and to raise the money needed to do this members are running a raffle. This is the playcentre’s major annual fundraiser and this year there are some fantastic prizes in store for lucky raffle winners. There will be 10 prizes, including the top prize of a return trip for two from Picton to Wellington, courtesy of Sounds Air. Other prizes are a night’s accommodation at the Knightsbridge Court Motor Lodge, a balance bike, a kid’s tacklebox, hair care packages, a grocery hamper and more. One item in particular is quite special, according to raffle or-

ganisers. It’s a handcrafted wooden sail boat gifted by a gentleman whose grandchildren attend playcentre, Rebecca Toms says. “He also built some of the shelving for our storage area so he’s been involved over the years, and now he’s donated this sail boat which is really quite special,” she says. Social media. The amount of stuff people post and the negativity is a challenge for most.

Social media. There’s a lot of online bullying. There’s also high expectations for us at a young age.

Youth feel pressured quite early on to find a career opportunity to move forward in life.

Schooling. Bigger colleges don’t have as many opportunities as Community College, and there’s not enough to do around town you don’t have to pay for.

Bullying and in general finding where we fit into the world and different situations.

Support for local airlines Dear Ed, I read with sadness in last week’s “The Sun” that the city Fathers and Mothers are pushing to get Air NZ back on the Blenheim to Christchurch run. What about our local airline? Are they that busy that people can’t get a booking? I am sure if this was the case Sounds Air would put on more flights or get a larger plane. Has anyone bothered to

Dear Ed, I yelled ‘Whoopee’ when I heard the budget is to give pensioner couples about $13 a week more come April 1 2018. But then I put on my slippers, got out my pipe and ruminated. Gosh, $13 a week means the two of us can go and buy two cups of coffee and share a muffin every week. That’s what it amounts to. The other thing that occurred to me is that I have to wait till next year, and the day I can shout ‘Whoopee’ again will be April 1 - April Fool’s Day. Surely that connection is significant. But there’s a proviso. I have to vote National so government can honour its promise. I did more pondering and came up with I’ll swap my coffee and muffin for government to put money into health, particularly hospices. Don Coyote Blenheim

Vandalised meters costs ratepayers The cost to ratepayers of a trail of damage by vandals to parking meters in the Blenheim CBD will run into hundreds of dollars to repair. About three dozen kerbside parking meters have been damaged or broken into in the CBD during the past fortnight. Parking sub-committee chairman Brian Dawson says it’s the worst stretch of vandalism to the town’s parking meters in a decade. Parts for repairs have to be

ordered from the United States so there will also be a cost to the ratepayer in lost revenue from the parking spaces while the meters are out of action, he says. Council and Police each have access to the footage from the CCTV security cameras that are located around the CBD in Blenheim, and this is being reviewed in the hope that offenders can be identified. Brian encourages anyone with information about the damage to Councillor Brian Dawson says the meter vandalism is infuriating. contact Blenheim Police.

Families have strong presence at local hunting competition By Celeste Alexander A large crowd gathered on Sunday for the Woodbourne Tavern’s Pig & Deer Hunt weigh in. Jessenka Boarding Kennels and Cattery owner Wendy St George and partner Stephen, with some of their own dogs.

From fish to cats and dogs Wendy St George is busy with cats and dogs at the Jessenka Boarding Kennels and Cattery, but she used to work with strange underwater creatures. Cathie Bell talks to her.

Wendy St George used to be a graphic designer for the National Institute for Water and Atmospheric Research, making posters and booklets about the weather, underwater geography, and strange creatures found in the depths. Now she and partner Stephen Woollett own and operate the Jessenka Boarding Kennel and Cattery on Old Renwick Road. The couple have been at Jessenka for seven years last February. Wendy says it is ‘a total lifestyle change’. The couple knew about looking after dogs – they have been longtime papillon owners, and Wendy shows the toy dog breed. “I have always kept dogs and know about feeding them, but I’m still learning stuff, you never stop learning, and every one is different.” She laughs that they have’ too many of our own dogs – we have 11’.

“I show them. They are very much a sideline because the business has to come first. “We joke that we have two kennels, the boarding one and our own.” In the past seven years, they have made major changes to the business as they work out what works best and how to run the business most efficiently. Part of that has been re-building every bit of the property, with new sheltered premises for both small and big dogs in separate areas and a special building for cats, as well as a new house for themselves. “We have done a lot of work on the place, it has to be good enough for our own dogs – we wouldn’t feel right about it otherwise for our customers.” There has been a kennel at the Old Renwick Street address for 50 years, Wendy says, but there have been a number of different owners. The business is going well, she

says, but ‘it’s really hard work’. They employ two people, and have separate roles, with Wendy looking after the small dogs and cats and Stephen looking after the big dogs. The business has ‘taken over our lives’, Wendy says. “Really and truly, it’s a 24-hour business, seven days a week. “We get customers out of hours, calls throughout the day. “Before a weekend, and not just long weekends, it gets really busy.” The cattery was full for last weekend’s three-day Queen’s Birthday weekend, and Wendy says that’s been a growth area for them since they came to Blenheim. They built a purpose-built cattery at Jessenka, and that’s been really successful. “The people using it seem to like it, the cats seem really happy. It is booked out for Christmas by September.” Two years ago, Wendy and Ste-

phen got Jessenka accredited by Government agency AsureQuality on their pet boarding programme. They say they are the only boarding kennel and cattery accredited in the top of the South Island. “People said it couldn’t be done, but we have.” Only five per cent of kennels and catteries in New Zealand are AsureQuality accredited, Wendy says. The agency regularly inspects the property and has a range of criteria Jessenka has to meet, for things such as the space available for animals, and the kennel and cattery processes. Wendy says that when she and Stephen re-built everything, they did it to AsureQuality specifications. “It may be one day in the future kennels are regulated. We want to be in a good position when that happens. “It costs to do it but it’s a good place to be.”

Honours for Service to community locals gets Beryl honoured

Three other Marlborough-based people were honoured by the Queen on Monday. They were: Fairhall man Des Ashton and Picton’s Sue Edwards who both receive a ONZM, and Lake Grassmere farmer Doug Avery who receives an MNZM. Des Ashton received his honour for services to the New Zealand Defence Force and aviation. He was the Defence Ministry’s deputy secretary acquisition from 2008 to 2016, during which time he had responsibility for delivering one of the largest Defence acquisition programmes in New Zealand. This covered 16 projects at various stages of development with a combined final contract value of NZ $3.5 billion. Sue Edwards received her honour for services to synchronised swimming. Sue has held many different administrative positions within synchronised swimming in New Zealand and has also had an active career as a judge and referee for national and international competitions, officiating at Olympic Games, Commonwealth Games, World Championships and numerous New Zealand domestic competitions. She is one of only five International Swimming Federation judge educators in the world. Doug Avery received his honour for services to agriculture and mental health. He has successfully adopted land use techniques to drought-proof his farm and has spoken to audiences around New Zealand, Australia and Argentina about his new farming systems that provide a basis for sustainable environmental and financial growth. Doug is best-known as a spokesperson for mental health issues within the farming community and frequently shares his personal experiences with audiences around New Zealand.

By Glenise Dreaver Beryl Bowers’ Queen’s Service Medal citation states she has undertaken ‘an extensive amount of voluntary work in Picton and the wider Marlborough community’. Beryl just says ‘I like to keep busy’. The first letter advising her of the recommendation arrived in April. It was a complete surprise. “I read the first paragraph and went to find Cliff. ‘I’ve had this letter...’. “Cliff read it right through and said ‘You realise you’re not supposed to tell anyone about this. Not even me.’.” Three letters followed with more detail. The last, from the Prime Minister, left her feeling less guilty. “Well, someone’s told him haven’t they?” Beryl is well known as the founder, now chairperson and organiser of the Picton Maritime Festival Trust. She also leads the team organising the annual Picton Christmas Parade. For those roles, she was awarded a Kiwibank Local Hero Award in 2015. That year, she was also given a special award from Queen Charlotte College for organising two of their reunions, and for supporting several of their overseas trips as a chaperone at her own expense.

After marriage and before St John had a presence, she organised the roster for the local Volunteer Ambulance. Qualifying as a first responder, she continued serving with the Volunteer Ambulance for several years. She helped establish the Picton Creche, now known as the Picton Community Early Learning Centre and the Picton Play Centre. Despite no previous experience Beryl took on, and thoroughly enjoyed, the roles of instructor and chaperone for the Picton Marching Club. She came through Girl Guide ranks to become Provincial Commissioner and served on the Board of Trustees for Picton School and for Queen Charlotte College as chair. Her citation naturally does not include any details of her busy personal life. She not only brought up her own family here, and supported Cliff in his plumbing business and as a borough and district councillor, but worked as a teacher after gaining her teacher’s qualification over several years of distance education. She is now a member of Picton’s Smart and Connected group and in her spare time sings with Vicky Gardener’s A Capella Belles, who meet weekly in the Anglican Church Beryl Bowers with the letters about her royal honour. Elder Abuse Awareness Day - 15 June 2017

Transport to town

Be kind, compassionate and caring towards older persons.

‘Nice to know people care’ - Age Concern Age Concern Marlborough field officer Catherine Donnelly says this year’s ‘Elder Abuse Awareness Week’ (June 15 – 22) is about respect for the elderly. “Respect can be shown in many ways, such as giving an elderly person a seat on a bus, speaking to them nicely and generally treating them with dignity.” Some of the things Catherine says she deals with on a regular basis include scamming, advocacy work and housing issues. “Housing is a huge issue right now. Finding accommodation for older persons who have been asked to leave their homes because the

Catherine Donnelly of Age Concern Marlborough.

rental situation has changed is tough. It’s not an easy process to find new homes with the uncertainty of the rental market. “We also get some self neglect and isolation cases which are phoned in by con-

cerned neighbours or family members. “It’s really heartening to see the amount of people who phone or visit us about someone they are concerned about. It’s nice to know people care,” she says. Age Concern Marlborough runs a regular Friendship Group for those who want to meet others and form friendships. This group meets monthly and to date has around 25 people that attend, and it’s sponsored by Cafe Le Cup. Contact Age Concern Marlborough for more information about their services or to receive an invitation to the Friendship Group.

NZ Red Cross Marlborough, along with Age Concern, have joined together to provide transport from Picton and Seddon into Blenheim, on a fortnightly basis. If you are over 65 and are having a problem getting into Blenheim, phone Age Concern 579 3457 for more details. • The transport will leave from the Picton Library on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of the month, at 10.30 am. • The Blenheim drop off, and pick up area will be outside the library. • The transport will leave Blenheim at 2.00 pm (sharp). • Numbers will be limited. • Consent forms will need to be completed before acceptance on the scheme. Conditions apply.

Baby facts A baby cannot taste salt until it is four months old. The delay may be related to the development of kidneys, which start to process sodium at about that age. A baby’s eyes are 75% of their adult size, but its vision is around 20/400. By six months, a baby’s vision should reach 20/20.

Famous premature babies include Albert Einstein, Isaac Newton, Mark Twain, Stevie Wonder, Johannes Kepler, and Sir Winston Churchill. A baby has around 30,000 taste buds. They are not just on the tongue but also on the sides, back, and roof of the mouth. Adults have about 10,000.

Newborns are more likely to turn their head to the right than to the left.

Approximately 80% of infants are born with some form of birthmark, usually stork bite and port wine stains.

The inner ear is the only sense organ to develop fully before birth. It reaches its adult size by the middle of pregnancy.

A baby can recognize the smell and voice of its mother at birth. It takes a few weeks before a baby can see the difference between its mother and other adults.

A baby’s skull doesn’t fuse until around age two.

A baby’s first social smile appears between four and six weeks after birth.

The protein that keeps a baby’s skull from fusing is called ‘noggin’.

A baby is born in the world every three seconds.

Adults have 206 bones. When babies are born, they have 300. Their bones fuse as they grow, resulting in fewer bones as adults.

A baby’s head is proportionally huge, being onequarter of the total body length, compared to only one-eighth of the total adult’s length.

The intestines of a newborn are about 11 feet long. The length will double by the time the baby grows to adulthood.

The kneecap bone doesn’t harden until between the ages of two and six.

Human babies are the only primates who smile at their parents.

The grasp of a newborn baby is so strong that its whole body can hang in midair, with its bent fingers supporting its weight.

Masterpiece Painting & Plastering

Anyone can paint a wall, but if it’s a top quality finish backed by a reputable company you are wanting then Masterpiece Painting and Plastering Ltd is the one to call. The company was formed nearly ten months ago by Smith & Sons Blenheim owners Daniel and Jess Francis. Daniel says it all came about through ‘supply and demand’ for his renovation and extensions company, and has quickly grown to be a successful stand-alone business. “We have a consistently high expectation on all of our work so it was important for us to have quality painters on hand, ready when we needed them. “It’s since become a bigger business and is available for work anywhere in Marlborough,” he says. Masterpiece Painting and Plastering Ltd is managed by Shawn Purser and working with

him is Andy Fieldhouse. Shawn is a volunteer ambulance officer with St John’s and has worked as a painter for a number of years. It’s his ‘eye for detail’ that Daniel says keeps the standard of workmanship high. “He’s very meticulous and fussy, and very tidy in his work which is what we like.” Andy is also highly experienced with around 30 years of painting under his belt. “They are a great team and have a very professional approach to their work,” Daniel says. Shawn and Andy are qualified tradesmen for all painting and plastering needs and are available for both interior and exterior painting for residential and commercial jobs. A freelance interior designer is also available to those wanting advice on colour and decor.

memoriam

Barbara Elizabeth Simmons 13th February 1938 7th June 2015 There’s a road I call remembrance where I walk each day with you. It’s a pleasant, happy road Barb, all filled with memories true. Today it leads me to a spot where I can dream a while and in its tranquil peacefulness I touch your hand and smile. There are hills and fields, and budding trees and stillness that’s so sweet that is seems that this must be the place where god and humans meet. I hope we can go back again and golden hours renew and god be with you always Barb, until the day we do. Love you always Barb. Your loving husband John

Young sailors aiming high By Glenise Dreaver In October, two ten-year-olds from Picton are off on the adventure of their lives so far, bound for Noumea to sail in an international regatta. Louie Poletti and River Hopkins are part of the 10-strong New Zealand International Optimist Dinghy Association development team for 10-11 year olds, selected after their fine performances in this year’s nationals. The only two South Island sailors, the young Queen Charlotte Yacht Club sailors will train with and compete in Noumea against other young sailors up to fifteen years of age. It means training all winter, and attending weekend workshops in Auckland, until they leave for

Noumea on October 7. River’s mother Christel Hopkins says both boys are deeply committed to improving their stamina, their skills and their tactical sailing, as well as fronting up to the level of work needed to care for their boats and looking after their sailing gear. “The programme is a large commitment for the families too,” she says. “The cost per sailor is around $6000, not including family members. “It would be fantastic if people could help us along fundraising. We are having to get out there and ask. Christel says that in the longterm, the boys are hoping that one day they will sail in the Olympics.

River Hopkins, left, and Louie Poletti are young Picton sailors in national Optimist development team.

By Cathie Bell Weather data collected over the past 30 years shows ‘dramatic’ warming, Plant and Food Research scientist Rob Agnew says. Rob records and collates the data collected at the Grovetown Business Park each month, and says while May this year is below average for the period 1986-2016, it is ‘by no means cold, when compared to many previous years’. May’s mean temperature of 10.4°C is the coolest May mean temperature in the past five years but Rob suggests people may not have noticed. “If you are scratching your head thinking that May wasn’t colder than average there is a partial explanation supplied when we look at the average daily maximum and minimum temperatures. “The average daily maximum was only 0.5°C below average, whereas the average daily minimum was 1.0°C below average; that is, the cooler-than-average night-time temperature in May dragged the mean temperature down more than the slightly below-average day-time temperatures.” Rob says all months May to September have shown considerable warming over the past 30 years. However, the months October to April have shown little increase in temperature, he says. That is, Blenheim’s late autumn, winter and early spring temperatures are much warmer than they used to be, whereas the late spring, summer and early autumn temperatures have shown little change. Blenheim is showing a warming trend, but the weather data from Woodbourne is not,

Plant and Food Research scientist Rob Agnew.

Rob says, which could be because coastal areas are more affected by warming than inland areas. “But as to why Blenheim is having a lot less frosts than it used to, I’m not entirely sure of the answer.” Rob says it is ‘quite dramatic’ compared to what it was 30 or 40 years ago. The warming is probably behind more North Island pests showing up in the South Island than previously, and fewer frosts could mean more pests as higher numbers survive warmer winters.

Team to reunite Blenheim-based co-driver John Kennard will team up with World Rally Champion driver Hayden Paddon in the Hyundai New Zealand Rally Team in the next event for the Paddon Rallysport-run Hyundai AP4+ rally car, Rally of Coromandel, on August 26. Job Quantock, the Hyundai NZ Young Driver Scholarship winner, with Hamilton’s Jason Farmer as co-driver, successfully finished the 10 special stages of Rally Canterbury in difficult conditions last weekend, bringing Hyundai NZ i20 AP4+ rally car in eighth position overall. Quantock now holds seventh place on the NZRC drivers’ championship points-table.

Richard Avery is training in the alps to represent New Zealand at the 24-hour running world championships.

Mt Vernon Traverse

By Cathie Bell Richard Avery, who grew up at Lake Grassmere, is to represent New Zealand next month at an ultra-marathon world championship in Ireland. Richard, who now lives in Perth in Western Australia where he has a grain marketing and consultancy business, is training in Europe now in the build-up to competing at the World Championships for 24-hour running in Belfast, Northern Ireland on July 1. He is the current West Australian state record-holder for both the 24hr and 100km races. “I am also hoping that my recent 100km victory will be enough to qualify me for the

The Marlborough Harriers Club fundraiser race, the Mt. Vernon Grand Traverse, is on this Sunday, with a choice of three events - Grand Traverse 10:00am start ($20); Fun Run/Walk 10:15am start ($15); Kids Challenge 10:30am start ($5). All runs start at Wither Farm Carpark at top end of Redwood Street. Spot prizes and BBQ. Everyone welcome to participate. Registration from 9am on the day. New Zealand team to represent the nation at the World Championships, in September 2018 in Sveti Martin na Muri, Croatia.” That team is expected to be named in March next year. Richard says he began running marathons in 2008 as a way to test himself, and soon fell in love with the movement and freedom of running. He discovered ultra-marathons in 2011, and is now a dedicated ultra-marathon runner, setting aside 17 to 25 hours per week in training, mostly running, but also cycling, hiking and gym work. At the moment, Richard is backpacking around the Pyrenees and French and Swiss Alps.

“The rough idea is to get 6-8hrs a day on my feet moving and climbing as much as possible, plus obviously carrying all my gear. Then I break it up with running days too. I have never trained at altitude before, so it’s all a learning curve.” Growing up in Marlborough, Richard says he always loved the outdoors and team sports. “I spent a lot of my earlier years reading books on mountaineering and survival stories. I also enjoyed playing sports right through my schooling years, representing both my school and the Nelson/Marlborough provinces in hockey and squash.” Next month’s world championship is his first time representing New Zealand.

Chatham Cup competition over for the Pirates Central Pirates took on Nelson Suburbs in the Chatham Cup on Monday in Nelson and were soundly beaten 5-0.
