Book bargain

By Celeste Alexander Thousands of pre-loved books have been sorted, stacked and displayed for the Cancer Society Marlborough’s Book Fair which kicked off yesterday. This fundraising project raised just over $15,000 last year and it’s hoped that a similar amount, if not more will be raised this year. Continued page 2 Cancer Society Marlborough volunteers Sandra Kirk and Barbara Ward are part of a team that sorted thousands of books.

Bound to find book bargain Continued from page 1 The Book Fair runs until this Sunday and is being held at the Bays Joinery showroom on Kinross Street, thanks to them kindly providing the space. A team of 10 regular volunteers have been busy behind the scenes over the past

three weeks accepting book donations and categorising them into sections from men, women and children, through to cooking, fiction and non fiction. There is also a selection of DVDs, music CDs and even jigsaw puzzles.

“We actually have a really great men’s section with a good number of military and sports books this year which is great to see. The whole family can come and find something to suit all tastes,” Sandra says. All books on the tables are

Nurses crucial

By Cathie Bell The review of district nursing is showing the nurses in Blenheim do much more specialised post-surgical work with patients than their counterparts in Nelson, district health board head Peter Bramley says. Peter told the Marlborough Grey Power annual meeting this week that the board had thought moving district nurses from Wairau Hospital to the health hub in central Blenheim would be ‘smart’. “ We h ave h e a r d f r o m t h e Marlborough community it is not a good idea, so we have paused.” Three consultants are doing a review of district nursing across the region, and consumer interviews were done last week, he says. Findings from the review so far show

the district health board underestimates how much the Wairau Hospital depends on the skill of district nurses here for specialised care with dressings and other procedures, Peter says. “That’s not the case in Nelson.” The Marlborough district nurses are ‘such an integral part’ of the hospital care that taking them out of the hospital without replacing their skills won’t work, he says. At least some of them will remain at the hospital because of what has been learnt about the need for their skills, Peter says. However, the health board also wants to strengthen the ‘mobile aspect’ of the district nursing team, he says. When the review is completed, recommendations will be taken to the board for sign-off.

By Cathie Bell A Nelson Marlborough District Health Board member is leading a group opposed to fluoridating drinking water, despite the health board’s chief dental officer backing it. The group, ‘Educate Dont Fluoridate’, is opposed to the Government saying it will spend $12 million for councils to add fluoride to drinking water rather than commit to working at grass roots level with communities. Judy, with co-convenor Cynthia McConville, says the group champions an oral health education programme based on Denmark’s Nexo, which commences when a child’s first tooth erupts. Denmark has the lowest rate of dental caries in the world, and she says it has never fluoridated water. Judy says poor oral health is related to poverty and ignorance, not the lack of fluoride in drinking water.

Judy Crowe.

“No amount of fluoride will help these children whose consumption of sugar sweetened beverages can only be addressed through oral health education.” T he only f luor idated drinking water in Marlborough is at Woodbourne, where the Defence Force provides fluoridated water.

Cotton On may shut shop

inbrief

By Cathie Bell Clothing store Cotton On seems to be shutting its Market Street store and leaving Marlborough. The store space is being advertised online as ‘vacant soon’. No-one from Cotton On New Zealand or its corporate office in Australia responded to queries and staff at the central Blenheim store say they have heard nothing. The Sun has contacted commercial real estate agents in town and none have heard anything, saying the store isn’t moving to any new site they know of. It is understood the store’s Market Street

lease runs out in the next month. The Cotton On store is advertised online as a 194 square metre ‘ideal retail space’ on Market Street with ‘good profile’ and ‘vacant soon’. Its OPEX is put at $7590 a year including GST with its ‘retail square metres’ at $313 per square metre. No carparking spaces go with the site. Cotton On specialises in cheap clothing for a youthful market, and its children’s range is particularly popular, with a social media group set up to campaign for the store to bring the children’s clothing to Blenheim.

Blenheim horse trainer Michael O’Brien has been found guilty of five charges of deceiving Internal Affairs, two relating to Bluegrass Trust and three relating to gaming machine venues. He and two others, Paul Max and Kevin Coffey, have been remanded in custody until sentencing next month.

Public meeting on aviation By Cathie Bell Kaikoura MP Stuart Smith is calling a public meeting to try to find a way to expand Marlborough Airport quickly and to bring more flights to the region. That includes convincing Air New Zealand to re-start direct Blenheim-Christchurch flights again. The meeting, at 6.30pm on July 25 at the convention centre, will bring together all the major players, including Marlborough Airport, the Defence Force, and airline representatives. The Blenheim Business Association resolved at its annual meeting last month to band together with others across the region to fight hard to get Air New Zealand to restore direct

The Education Ministry has received the geotechnical testing results for its preferred site for the co-located colleges on Alabama Road, but it is citing commercial sensitivities in declining to say what those are. Ministry head of education infrastructure service Kim Shannon says the ministry has the results for the site, and it is ‘one of a number of factors that will influence whether we buy the site’. “These include ground conditions, transportation and access, topography, size, location, cost, infrastructure and potential cultural impacts. There can also be school/site specific factors that may influence a decision to acquire a particular site,” she says.

Business inbrief

Safe Air name goes Safe Air will be re-named Airbus New Zealand from July 1, marking the French company’s taking over of the Woodbournebased aircraft maintenance business. No changes to business operations are expected.

Harvest volume drops This year’s grape harvest has come in smaller than expected according to New Zealand Winegrowers, with the vintage survey shows the harvest totalled 396,000 tonnes, down nine per cent on last year.

Crossroads winery sold Yealands Family Wines has sold its Crossroads winery in Hawke’s Bay but is keeping the Crossroads brand, the company says. Yealands bought the winery in 2011, but decided to centralise wine-making in Marlborough last year.

House prices’ record Marlborough-Nelson median house prices have hit a new record of $483,250 this month, according to the Real Estate Institute. ‘We are seeing a continuing trend of strong median house price growth in many of the regions year-on-year, however a lack of inventory continues,” institute chief executive Bindi Norwell says. “Given the considerable mismatch between population growth, increasing immigration figures, low interest rates, high housing demand and low building consents and housing supply, it’s clear why prices are still rising – although at single rather than double-digit growth levels.”

Gordon Handy Machinery sells

John Deere dealership and agricultural machinery retailer, Gordon Handy Machinery Ltd (GHM) has sold its business to Drummond & Etheridge Ltd, owned by Mark and Sonia Etheridge. Established in 1979, Gordon Handy Machinery Ltd has grown from a small team of three based in Timaru, to six branches throughout the South Island employing towards 100 staff. “I would like to take this opportunity to thank all who have supported the business over the last 37 years,” Gordon Handy says. “I’ve had a chance to work with some incredible people who have taught me a lot about agriculture and business. I really appreciate the time customers and suppliers have given me over the years. “The decision to sell was a tough one, but at this stage in life I’m excited to spend some more time with the grandkids, and pursue other business

prospects. “Opportunities like this don’t come around often and I’m confident D&E will continue to support our customers and the Ag industry well. “All six GHM branches will be rebranded as D&E and customers will be able to deal with the same great staff they’ve become used to,” Mark says. “We’re pleased to have been able to offer essentially all GHM staff a new position with D&E. “Gordon and his wife Gill must be congratulated on what they have achieved in their 37 years of business, and I look forward to building on our relationship into future years,” Mark says. Gordon Handy will continue to have a connection with the business as a member of D&E’s Advisory Board. “Mark and his team have a great track record and I wish them all the best for the future,” Gordon says.

Gordon Handy has sold his John Deere dealership and agricultural machinery retailer business after 37 years to Drummond & Etheridge Ltd.

‘World class’ firms in Blenheim

By Cathie Bell The provinces, like Marlborough, are where the smart people are, Xero head Rod Drury says. Accounting software company Xero last week celebrated 10 years as a listed company, and Rod was in Blenheim to see accounting firm WK open its new three-storey building in Alfred Street. The two companies work together closely and he spoke highly of WK, citing the new

building with its improved facilities as ‘part of the new renaissance in the provinces’. The spread of fibre and new technology through the provinces means the conversations are changing, Rod says. “Service businesses can export from anywhere, and firms like WK, Xero, Ali Baba have the ability to help small businesses export and have foreign currencies drop into your bank accounts from invoices.

“We are not just relying on the big industries any more.” Rod says ‘really world-class firms and businesses’ are being created in the provinces. “The provinces are where the smart people are. We have the same technology as anyone else in the world, but people get a balance of lifestyle and building exciting global tech businesses.”

We know that there’s more than one way to build your wealth. That’s why we tailor our services and investment strategies based on your needs. It’s our business to listen and deliver. And it all starts with a conversation.

Council supports community requests

Almost half those who lodged a submission on this year’s draft Annual Plan wanted to speak directly to councillors about their requests or ideas so, for two and a half days last week, a steady flow of submitters passed through the doors of the council chamber. More than 60 people or groups took this chance to expand on their submissions. They ranged from requests to help fund big projects like the Coastal Pacific Cycle Trail, calls from sports and recreation groups for help to build new or improved facilities, like a new clubhouse for the Queen Charlotte Yacht Club, to more lobbying by Council for the battle against the biosecurity threat posed by Chilean Needlegrass, to small non-financial measures like reducing

Picton’s CBD speed limit to 30km/h. Councillors spent a full day this week discussing all submissions. Their decisions will be incorporated into the final Annual Plan due to be formally adopted at a Council meeting on 29 June 2017. The decisions will determine the level of rates from 1 July 2017. Council took a tough line on budgets for the year ahead, rejecting or deferring many requests for new spending, and holding the increase in the rates-take to 2.48%. A number of projects were funded, including the Queen Charlotte Yacht Club, the Coastal Pacific Cycle Trail, the Millennium Art Gallery and the wilding pine removal programme, led by the South Marlborough Landscape Restoration Trust. More details next week.

The project is run through Council’s Significant Natural Areas programme which supports local landowners to protect ecologically significant sites around the district. The Sun Dogs at cafes I’ve really heard it all now. People are complaining about dog poo and how you may be sitting at a cafe and the dog decides to have a wee or poo while you’re eating or just having a drink. I’m sure the dog is not going to speak and say excuse me I’m just going to the rest room. For goodness sake is there no limit on anything anymore? What is the world coming to? Sorry cafes are for people not dogs or any animal. They are pets and members of your family, but please!!!!!!

NZ Post Well NZ Post you did it again and fail to get my mail to me because l missed a second hospital appointment. Not happy.

Compulsory Insurance ?

Reply to roundabouts

This was paid at motor vehicle registration renewal time, it referred to third party personal injury cover and never did cover property eg your own or other vehicles passengers ...injured pedestrians or cyclists where you were found to be ‘at fault’. It has never covered third party property (other vehicle, fences on roadways or telegraph and electrical poles). Those have always been covered in fully comprehensive policies (covers one’s own car too) or third party only policies. Covers you if one’s at fault and you hit the Rolls Royce etc, third party injury cover via car rego ceased in 1972/3 when the no fault ACC Act was passed into legislation.

I am actually competent in English thank you, and have travelled to many places, including other small centres in other countries. I have read much concerning ‘studies’ into the whole subject of roundabouts v traffic lights, many see merit in both, but Blenheim is behind. There is a pride here in not installing lights. The town won’t exceed a certain size with that mentality.

Get rid of the rule that says you must indicate left as you exit a roundabout if you are going straight through, it is just not working. Too many people indicate left far too early, then there are the mind-blowing ones that indicate right, that makes it really confusing for the drivers turning left.

Indicating Re: Friday, June 2. Maybe it’s you who should not be driving, it is not 50km around town, read the speed signs you doing 50 is stupidity.

Scared dog To the owner of the grey BMW parked behind Harvey Norman at 12.30pm Thursday, June 1, are you aware every time your white poodle jumps from the front to the back seat it set off the car alarm? One scared pooch.

Beware Just remember if you enter a property and no one’s home, if something they say is stolen it’s up to you to prove it’s not. So contractors protect yourselves.

Interesting when I was told by a Real Estate Agency that a chimney sweep would be coming to my property they would give property keys to them if I was not home. On challenging this I was told we only have to give you 24 hours notice whether you are home or not. So Real Estate agents can give your keys to complete strangers, they told me I couldn’t refuse.

Exploring working future By Celeste Alexander Careers, change of job and training opportunities will be the hot topic of discussion next Monday at the annual Careers Evening held in Blenheim. The Careers Evening is held by the Marlborough Boys’ College and is in its 26th year. It’s being held at the Marlborough Lines Stadium 2000 from 6.30-8pm. Assistant principal James Ryan says there will be 42 exhibitors attending including local companies representing a variety of industries. “We will have the likes

of Wine Marlborough, Hortus, McDonalds and Sanfords as well as all the universities and the defense force. “There will be all the major industries in the region represented, so a good opportunity for people to find out more.” He also says the Careers Evening is not just for students, but for all ages. “A lot of the universities are acutely aware that you don’t have a job for life and that it’s life long learning, so often people are considering a career change. “I encourage anyone considering this to go

along and talk to the providers about what options are out there.” The theme for this year’s Careers Evening, James says, is ‘investigation’. “We are telling our students that there’s a big difference between having a look to actually getting in and finding out all the relevant information. We urge students to have a conversation with exhibitors, ask what they will get out of training and what is needed to become part of an industry. “Do a proper investigation and you will get so much more out of it,” he says.

W h a t ’s y o u r m o s t annoying habit? Going to sleep in front of TV and missing a chunk of the programme. One of my best holidays was... A trip to Newfoundland and Labrador in 2014, it was like going back in time. What ’s your fondest childhood memory? Spending a week of the summer holidays in Raglan by the sea with my parents and six siblings.

Q A Q A Q A

What’s your favourite meal? Lamb shanks in a rich sauce with roast vegetables and greens. My guilty TV pleasure is .....

Eating dark chocolate, in front of Coronation Street. What’s your greatest fear?

Falling off my bike again and being laid up for weeks.

Q A Q A Q A

How do you want to be remembered? As someone who cares about others. Who would you love to share a meal with and why? David Shearer, I admire the work he does as UN head of mission in South Sudan. What is the one thing people don’t know about you? At the end of a busy week I like to blob out in front of Coronation Street.

Judges have been in town looking at entrants in this year’s House of the Year competition. The Blenheim house they looked at this week is a show home, one of 30 in the national competition. Judges Allan Austen and Eric Dally say show homes are a big category in this year’s competition, which mainly looks at workmanship, but also at design and functionality. They say trends in new homes this year are to use textured tiles, and more timber in flooring at entranceways and lining roofs. All show homes have double garages and master bedroom with ensuite bathrooms and access into the outdoors, and kitchens are becoming more upmarket, with most having pantries, or sculleries with sinks in them. Exposed ceilings and underfloor heating are also popular.

The season begins on the 21st of June as the 21st is the shortest day and the longest night in the Southern Hemisphere. As from the 22nd the hours and minutes of sunlight will slowly increase with the sun rising a bit earlier and setting a bit later. Our plants are quick to notice the extra bit of sunlight increasing every day as that means they are gaining more energy (carbohydrates/sugars) In technical terms we say: Green plants make food in the form of carbohydrates by combining carbon dioxide and water using energy from sunlight. Carbohydrates are chemicals containing only the elements carbon, hydrogen and oxygen. The simplest useful form of carbohydrate produced by photosynthesis is glucose sugar. There is that naughty word that is bringing calamity to the planet; carbon dioxide, the stuff we breathe out and as the old saying goes, ‘breathe on a little plant and make it happy’ Now think about this for a moment; plants need Co2 + water+sunlight to grow and thrive. With lots of Co2, ample water and heaps of direct sunlight plants prosper out of sight. Take away or reduce any of those factors and plants do not fair very well. Nursery owners will release lots of Co2 into their glasshouses to give plants a growth boost, they do this after watering on a sunny day and its a real

‘Growth Bomb’ So the more Co2 that is around is going to be a great advantage for our gardens and plants as long as there is sufficient moisture and plenty of direct sunlight. In there lays the problem for those that are astute; direct sunlight and the absence thereof. As we have seen during recent seasons that if it is not a cloudy day more often than not it is a hazy sky day, which greatly reduces the amount of direct sunlight that reaches our plants. The effects of this vary from plant to plant and one or more of these aspects can be noticed; stunted growth, larger leaves, no flower buds, flower buds that don’t open, flowering at wrong times, increased maturity times, increase of disease and insect pest damage. Following this thought pattern how can Co2 be a problem as we have zillions of plants that will take in all the Co2 we can throw at them and they will love it, we might be quickly living in a jungle of plants but the Co2 levels will be naturally reduced. Plants die and the carbon from them is sequestrated into the soil building humus and saving the planet from Co2 global warming. So simple and all we have to do is fill our gardens with plants, grasses and weeds to save the world. Oops there is a problem, the plants need heaps of direct sunlight to save the world and they are not getting it. Oh well back to the drawing board.

Badminton win

Michael Venus - we hardly know ye Michael Venus’ triumph in the French Open men’s doubles is one that should be recognised. In a busy period of sport with the America’s Cup, British and Irish Lions tour, NBA playoffs, Stanley Cup ice hockey playoffs and the Champions Trophy cricket competition (how terrible were the Black Caps in that?!) it’s easy to pass over Venus’ unbelievable achievement on the red clay of Roland Garros. Sure, it’s the men’s doubles - hardly the glamorous singles draw but for a Kiwi to be in a tennis grand slam final, yet alone win it, is truly staggering. I’m not sure what this will do for Halberg

15

Award chances, I’m not even sure if he is an individual nomination or a team one since his doubles partner is American Ryan Harrison but the result is still more worthy. The 29-year-old Aucklander has a strong serve for doubles but only has a career-high singles ranking of 274 almost six years ago. The crowd watching the final was sparse to say the least but a French Open crown in any format is not to be sneezed at. After all, far better players have been more highly touted in Paris and come away with nothing. Generally, my interest in New Zealand tennis

Picton’s Queen Charlotte College was victorious as Marlborough teams shone at the Tasman secondary schools badminton championships in Motueka this week. In a closely-fought tie the Queen Charlotte College team of Keita Maxwell, Aron Radzik, Callum Nicholson, Agost Radzik, and Mana Collins won by two sets on countback after the match was tied at three games a piece, claiming the Helen Quentin-Baxter Trophy.

is non-existent. I would love for a Kiwi to be relevant on the global circuit but they aren’t. Credit where it’s due, Venus has done something he should receive plenty of praise for from the New Zealand sporting public. It’d be nice to see his public profile lifted and for New Zealand tennis officials to realise they have PR lightning in a bottle. Let Venus show off the trophy at schools and major events and see if we can’t inspire the next generation of Kiwi kids to take up the sport so it’s not such a long wait for the next grand slam trophy.

Sporting elder champion Sporting legend, academic and life coach Sir Peter Snell is to become patron of New Zealand’s SuperSeniors Champions programme and help raise awareness of senior’s issues such as elder abuse and neglect. Minister for Seniors Maggie Barry says Sir Peter is an inspirational role model to older New Zealanders and many people feel they know him through his sporting success, his books and his life’s work.

Saturday run

Reason for participating: “There were a few reasons for stepping into the ring. “After supporting Life Education in past years with their fantastic charity auctions, I thought what they do with the kids is great and with the committee stepping it up this year with something different and bringing a personal challenge for myself. “I had to be a part of it. “Its going to be a challenging four months and with a bit of luck I’ll get my nose straightened. “Go Team Red.”

The Marlborough Harriers club is holding a pack run/walk from a Taylor Pass Road property on Saturday at 2pm. The property is on the left hand side just before the first bridge after Taylor Dam, about seven km from Wither Road. Look for the ‘Harriers’ sign. Everyone is welcome to participate and there is a children’s run organised.

Central Pirates, top of the League The Central Pirates cemented second round champions with a solid 5-1 victory over Blenheim Valley Masters with Harrison Pine scoring a double and some great team work from Aaron Vercoe and Liam Sluiter setting up the victory. Mark Batty scored a super con-

solation goal for Masters. Rangers City had a tough defense and crafted a 1-0 win over Central with Keagan Mortimer scoring the only goal. Blenheim Valley Cobras and Club Mates United ended in a one all stalemate. Division 2 featured a huge upset

with Picton Panel and Paint beating Blenheim Valley Woodbourne 5-0 and that meant Clubs of Marlborough Rangers took second round honors’. The other game resulted in a two all draw between Rangers Development and Trojans.

Division 3 honors of the round went to Trojan Spartans beating Rangers United 2-1. Picton Crow Tavern and Redwood Masters drew 1-1. All local football teams will be looking forward to the first round of the knockout cup this weekend.

Sunstrike crashes devastating By Cathie Bell A long-time Sun reader is warning others about the dangers of sunstrike when driving after nearly hitting a school student with her car. The reader says she was waiting on the Howick Road intersection to turn right on Maxwell Road into town about 3.30pm on Wednesday, when a Marlborough Girls’ College student was waiting on her bike to cross Maxwell Road and turn into Howick Road at the same time. “I am not trying to make excuses but the way the sun was in my eyes, I could hardly see her while she waited there and, thinking she had crossed already, I moved my car to

cross the intersection, nearly crashing into her and another car on Maxwell Road. “Luckily nothing happened and we all were fine but I got so terrified and shocked that I didn’t even think about stopping or talking to that girl to see if she was all right. “I want to apologise for what could have led to a fatal road accident and all just because of me.” The driver says she was in a silver car, and wants to convey her ‘sincere apologies to that innocent college girl’. “It made me think how a tiny thing like this can affect us and others on the road and by just being a bit more patient and vigilant on the road, we can avoid major disasters.”
