By Cathie Bell Hularii and Amber McKenzie are calling for councillors to re-think and fund an adult changing facility in Blenheim. They asked the Marlborough District Council as part of Annual Plan submissions for this but are disappointed to have missed out, when they know what a big difference it will make to them and others in town. Their oldest child, seven year-old Bailey, is wheelchair-bound with spastic quadriplegic cerebral palsy and epilepsy among other conditions. Continued on page 2 Amber and Hularii McKenzie, with two of their children, Evie, five months and Bailey, seven.

Council answers toilet access call Continued from page 1 Hularii says his family asked the council to put in more disabled change areas for them and other families to use in town. There is a facility at the Stadium 2000 that people can take their child who needs a change, but that is not always available as it gets booked out. “We among other families have literally had to change our growing children in the boots of our cars because there is nowhere close to do it.” After the Mackenzies approached The Sun, the Marlborough District Council had another look at the issue. Council’s property and community facilities

manager Jamie Lyall says council staff are examining what would be required to provide specialised toilet and changing facilities within Blenheim’s central business district. The facilities need to have a hoist and adult-size changing table. Jamie says inquiries are underway to see if another central location could be adapted and fitted out. He said it would not be a public facility in the usual sense but accessed only by the families or carers of those requiring use of such specialised facilities, probably by way of a swipe card. “This would be an amenity used by only a very few people with particular high needs and, given

the level of vandalism at our public toilets, it would have to be accessible by security card only.” Staff are considering whether it may be possible to convert part of existing toilet amenities at Liz Davison Place or the carparking building. Space was required for an adult-sized change table and hoist with room also to manoeuvre a wheelchair or mobility scooter. Location was the key issue, Jamie says. “We would even consider meeting the cost of installing all the necessary equipment if a commercial building owner in town could offer a suitable space.” Hularii says the news from the council is ‘great’.

By Cathie Bell Cotton On has moved to fix a blunder that saw the space housing the company’s store in Blenheim being advertised as available for rent and vacant possession. It is understood the company is now to sign a three-year lease, renewing its position in Blenheim’s main shopping street, Market Street. The Sun understands the company’s lease on the site was to expire in the next month. No-one from Cotton On New Zealand has responded to queries from The Sun and staff at the central Blenheim store say they have heard nothing. Cotton On Australian spokeswoman Meg Carroll will only say there has been a ‘misunderstanding’. “There has been a misunderstanding with this listing and the Cotton On store in Blenheim is not closing or moving at this time.” She would not say what the misunderstanding was that led to store space being advertised online as ‘vacant soon’. The Cotton On store was advertised online as a 194 square metre ‘ideal retail space’ on Market Street with ‘good profile’ and ‘vacant soon’. Cotton On specialises in cheap clothing for a youthful market, and its children’s range is particularly popular, with a social media group set up to campaign for the store to bring the children’s clothing to Blenheim.

The two organisations that put forward the best reasons will receive free exhibiting space at the show. “Last year the show attracted over

Search finds man A police and search and rescue team found a 70 year-old man who had got lost in Picton’s Essons Valley on Tuesday. Police say the man had a cell phone with him and was able to let searchers know his location at 2.50pm. Marlborough Volunteer Search and Rescue staff found him just after 5pm.

Missing bunnies bounty offered By Cathie Bell The Blenheim Business Association built and decorated wooden bunnies to decorate the central business district at Easter, but some of the bunnies didn’t make their way back, and the association is now offering a bounty. Association co-ordinator Caroline Stone says about a dozen bunnies are missing, along with another dozen wooden eggs. They were all placed in Kinross Street, near the Stadium 2000. “There are probably too many missing to just have been taken home by somebody.” Caroline says the association is offering a bounty for returned bunnies and eggs. Association members didn’t really want to go back into the workshop to make more, she says. “We’ll give people a voucher for a couple of coffees at Thomas’s to make it worth their while to bring them back.”

Pedestrian injured A man was seriously injured after being hit by a car in Springlands on Monday. A car hit the pedestrian at the intersection of Colemans Road and Orchard Lane about 6.20am.

Focus on stopping pest plant spread

4

$ 00

By Cathie Bell Next week will see a stepping up of efforts to stop the spread of pest plant Chilean needle grass. A national landowners’ group is meeting in Marlborough with people from Marlborough, Hawkes Bay and Canterbury getting together for the first time to start work on raising awareness of the serious risks posed by the grass. Later that day, a field day is being held at Phil and Virginia Pratt’s property, Glenbeigh, at Blind River, where a discussion about new requirements under the Regional Pest Management Plan and on farm planning will be held. Two videos have been made to help farmers, one for those with the pest plant on their properties and one for those who want to avoid getting it on their properties.

Farmers, vineyard owners, contractors, and agencies and organisations with a stake in the environment, are all invited to hear the latest about control methods and the help that is available. It’s hoped that every property owner who has any needlegrass infestation will attend. Council biosecurity officer Jim Herdman says Chilean needle grass is still spreading in Marlborough. He hopes this meeting will raise awareness and win support for new protocols to help limit the spread. The infestations near Blenheim, on the Taylor River, Omaka, and Wither Hills, are being treated by the new herbicide the council has helped introduce, Jim says. • Chilean Needle Grass Field Day is on Tuesday 27 June, from 12.30pm to 3.30pm, at Phil and Virginia Pratt’s, Glenbeigh, 331 Blind River Loop Road.

Careers evening leaves students ‘inspired’ By Celeste Alexander The Marlborough Lines Stadium 2000 was a place of inspiration and goal setting for hundreds of people who attended the Careers evening on Monday night. Hosted by the Marlborough Boys’ College, this annual event brought together 42 exhibitors from all over the country, who spoke with those wanting to learn more about training options and prospective career paths. A number of adults were also exploring their options for retraining, which is ‘what this Careers Evening is all about’, MBC assistant principal James Ryan says. Sydney Burt talks to defence recruiter Chief Petty Officer Nick Geary.

Predator-free Picton a step closer By Glenise Dreaver Picton’s Dawn Chorus pop-up shop in Wellington Street sold 65 predator traps in its first three days in business last week. The group wants to totally rid Picton of the rats, stoats, and possums destroying native bird life. “Wellington’s well on the way to becoming the first predatorfree city in New Zealand and we aim to make Picton the first predator-free town,” project coordinator Siobain Browning says. The group’s website reports 352 rats, 445 mice and 208 possums caught since trapping began late last year. Participants can submit information on numbers caught to pictondawnchorus.nz and anyone interested can also track the figures and information on that site. “The main place for trapping at the moment is in Victoria Domain,” supporter Don Miller says, but they also aim to have garden traps in one in every four properties in Picton and

Waikawa. There are three types of trap for sale in the pop-up shop - the gas, self clearing and self resetting Goodnature traps for possums, and for rats, both cost $85, while the $10 wooden and wire traps need to be cleared. “These are subsidised prices available only for Picton/Waikawa residents,” Siobain says. There are 165 traps left, though the self-setting ones have already sold out. A new shipment will be available next week. The pop-up shop has been made possible by a second grant from Kiwibank, bringing its total donation to the local project to $12,000. ”The first subsidy was a big success and we are very grateful that they have supported us again with this further grant” Siobain says. The shop, near Kiwi Takeaways, will be open between 10am and 1pm Monday to Saturday until mid-July.

Letters to the editor

Cat? Poo Cats will, if possible, scratch a small depression in loose soil and defecate into it. They will then replace soil cover. This instinctive action disguises from other cats, particularly males, who is present and what food has been eaten. If even a small space of sand or soil is available, cats will move into it. It is more likely that a hedgehog is responsible for unwanted fertile deposits. Hedgehogs are active most nights so are often not noticed. Unlike cats who stop and squat, they defecate while moving so their deposits are often a dark streak tapering at one end. As air temperatures drop for winter they will select a dry, safe hibernation space among clumps of grass or dry leaves and will not be active until spring. If the so-called cat poo deposits reduce during winter it can show that furry felines are not to blame for a natural activity in an unnatural regulated environment. Terry Blenheim

Marlborough District Council has removed rubbish bins from areas where people picnic or gather. Result - rubbish litter. So policy should be reinstate those bins plus put bins in other places where they have never been but are needed. A prime example is the Diversion. “Clean Kiwi” Blenheim

Re: Article on litter Dear Ed, I live in Weld Street and our hedge/ fence constantly has bottles, cans and rubbish thrown over it. There even was a lunchbox with molding pizza in it thrown over the fence two weeks ago. About eight years ago many open letters obviously taken from letter boxes (all opened) were found on the property. I was on crutches at the time, but returned them to their correct addresses but finally decided to take a packet of insurance papers to the police station explaining the situation and due to my incapacity would not be stretching myself to walk delivering opened mail anymore. It is very disconcerting to find weekly lots of litter on or around your boundary. Surely the council can do some sort of monitoring? Although some of the cans are alcohol, which could be discharged at night (by patrons walking back from the tavern). Annoyed resident Blenheim

Gin it is... Hidden in a Renwick garage are the beginnings of a drinks empire. Cathie Bell talks to bitters mixer and soon-to-be distiller Ben Leggett. Ben Leggett is a born and bred Marlburian, who grew up in Rarangi. But he’s spent 14 years overseas, working in the international drinks business in Britain and has learnt a huge amount about spirits, cocktails, and the people who make them. “I’m the usual cliché, a Kiwi ending up in Britain working in a bar. “I tried not to do that – I went to France on a one year tourism visa. “I ended up in Britain in a bar, and I never looked back.” He says he started off doing cocktails and competitions, moving into event work for drinks brands, and starting ambassadorial jobs, working as a consultant for cognac and whisky brands. “It was amazing, an incredible experience. I got to travel and did what I loved.”

The dream has always been to own and operate a distillery, Ben says. Fourteen years went by and now he has come back to Marlborough with his English wife Lou to settle down and get a better life. The dream has always been to own and operate a distillery, Ben says. “Before we left Britain, I launched my own range of cocktail bitters. It is niche but fashionable – it took off. The plan is to do the same here, and have my own gin.” While he personally likes gin and it’s ‘an easy spirit to make’, Ben says there is a boom to come in gin – the spirit has been re-discovered and is huge in Europe, and it’s time for it to do the same here. “In the past two years, the number of craft distilleries has taken off, and an official gin guild has started up...It’s going with a hiss and a roar.” He is close with his distillery plans, with investors and business partners

signed up, and a distillery location close to being agreed. “The grand plan is close. Next year, I hope to be up and running. “After years away, I’m lucky to be a Kiwi again, support has been unbelievably good, I’m pleased to be doing something in New Zealand.” He has six months to get his gin recipe sorted, and is confident it will have grapes in it. “The niche with gin is absolutely the botanicals. “I’m looking at a Marlborugh dry gin, I’m not the only distillery in Marlborough, but it will be made from grapes. “I want it to be the base product of our grape industry.” While the distillery is still a way off, his range of cocktail bitters is flourishing. The bitters are in their first year, and are already being sold in Melbourne and London, as well as being distributed through the main centres in New Zealand. Ben makes three bitters – ‘citrus refresher’ of Grapefruit and Hops Bitters; ‘rich berry’ Blackberry and Balsamic Bitters; and ‘mature digestif’ Coffee and Pimento Bitters. All are aimed at a different cocktail drinks area, and each is built around locally-sourced ingredients. “I’m a geek… I like to play to see how each individual ingredient plays out. “I have spent years of teaching and training on behalf of cognac and brandy, keen to see if I can produce what I have been teaching all these years.” While the bitters range and the distillery plans may be small by the scale of the international work he has been involved in before, the work is intensive and time-consuming. When everything is done by hand, it’s a lot of work for one person, especially when you have a fulltime job, a baby on the way, and a distillery to set up, as Ben does. “I moved to New Zealand to relax and have a more balanced lifestyle, and I’m Ben Leggett makes bitters and is setting up a Marlborough distillery. more busy than I’ve ever been.”

Exciting new art workshop By Celeste Alexander Local artist Kylie Fleur is excited for the launch of her brand-new art workshop titled ‘Creative Mindfulness Workshop’. She describes it as being ‘a new approach to art making’ where participants learn to use mindfulness to support their creative process, while exploring art-making as a form of mediation. “As a mother I find my mind is often on auto-pilot, focused on the next thing, the next meal, the next playdate, the next pick up and drop off... I soon realised I wasn’t stopping enough to smell the roses. “I needed to stop and surrender to the moment, in both life and in my art form. “This has been a hugely important learning process, one which I want to share with others.” Kylie says there are several benefits

to gain from attending her workshop. “Many studies show creativity and mindfulness to be hugely beneficial to our health and happiness, they promote calm and wellbeing, reduce stress and anxiety, improve mental health, and increases our focus and attention span.” Through the ‘Creative Mindfulness Workshop’ Kylie will offer a series of exercises designed to help people feel relaxed, present, tuned-in and responsive through their art. “Emphasis is placed on the process of creating rather than planning ahead to the finished artwork, we choose a particular focus for the mind which in this case, is the thing we are doing creatively. From there we then apply mindfulness to it,” she says. PBA

Accident closes road

A crane had to be used to put a truck back on its wheels.

A truck rolled at the corner of Scott Street and Muller Road after being hit by a car, on Saturday afternoon. Neighbours say the accident happened about 4pm, and the road was closed until 6pm, after the rolled truck spilt fuel. Luckily, no-one was hurt in the accident. A crane was called in to lift the small truck back onto its wheels.

Yes it’s cold, but keeping active is key to taking care of your health.

Walk for health A winter walk, just what the doctor ordered

Winter is here and as the temperature drops it can be tempting to go into hibernation. But while the chilly days offer little motivation to get off the couch, keeping active is key to taking care of your health. A Southern Cross Health Society survey looking at the health and wellbeing of New Zealanders has revealed that three in five Kiwis (59%) perceive themselves as overweight, with females (61%) and people aged 40 plus (62%) more likely to think they are overweight. Southern Cross Health Society’s head of marketing, Chris Watney, says nearly one in four (22%) Kiwis have been told that their weight is a concern by their doctor. “Our research shows that more than half of New Zealanders (54%) have attempted to lose weight in the past year, and while most were successful at dropping the kilos, fewer than half (44%) have been able to keep the weight off.” Females were more likely to try and lose

weight (59%) than males (48%), and those aged 40 to 49 years (60%) were more determined to lose weight than other age groups. “We know that for most people weight loss efforts are centred on diet, and three quarters of our respondents lost weight after watching what they ate. Those aged under 40 were more likely to focus on exercising outside of the gym (61%) and reducing their sugar consumption (57%),” he says. The survey also asked New Zealanders what their favourite type of exercise was, with almost three quarters (74%) saying they enjoy a regular walk. Running (14%) and cycling (14%) were the next most common forms of exercise. And while exercise may be less appealing in winter, it comes with benefits beyond just potential weight loss. “It’s also good for boosting energy, lifting your mood, reducing stress and improving your immune system,” he says.

As the temperature drops, many might be tempted to chow down on belly-warming meals like rich macaroni and cheese and creamy soup. Instead, get that toasty feeling from superfoods and incorporate healthy eating into your daily routine to ensure you are getting nutrients, antioxidants, and immune-boosting powers that your body needs to power itself through cold weather. Oatmeal When it gets cooler, it’s the perfect time to break out the oatmeal. Oats are a whole grain, so you’ll get a dose of fiber and plant-based protein to stop hunger with just one bowl. You can get extra nutrition if you choose the right toppings too. Brussels sprouts Eating these mini cabbages may just help you fight a cold this fall.

In addition to being packed with fiber and cancer-fighting phytonutrients, Brussels sprouts run high in vitamin C. It won’t prevent the sniffles completely, but vitamin C has been shown to reduce the length of cold symptoms. Though the bitter taste of brussels sprouts tends to scare some people away, heating them up can make a huge difference in flavor. Avocado There’s a way to enjoy this creamy fruit when it’s chilly, including oven roasting avocado which makes it even creamier. Chop it up warm and put on top of another vegetable. The bonus is that about half of the fat of avocado comes from monounsaturated fat, which helps lower your bad cholesterol levels and provide nutrients for cells to function.

Richard Bradley and Peter Meihana talks to iwi members at Whites Bay (Pukatea).

Treaty signing marked Local iwi members commemorated the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi in Marlborough with a series of events last weekend. Historian Dr Peter Meihana gave a presentation at the Millennium Gallery last Friday, tying in with the gallery’s ‘Disenchanted Prophets-Matakite Matakiri’ photographic exhibition on modern Maori protest. Peter’s contribution to the recently published book, ‘The Treaty of Ground’, examines in more detail the treaty settlements of

the local Kurahaupo iwi of Ngati Kuia, Ngai Apa and Rangitane. A copy of the Treaty of Waitangi document was signed by local chiefs of Rangitane, Ngati Toa, and Ngati Rarua at Horahora Kakahu island in Port Underwood on June 17 1840. While some chiefs such as Te Rauparaha and Te Rangihaeata signed copies of the Treaty in other regions, Peter points out that Ihaia Kaikoura was the only Rangitane iwi signatory. His relationships to other

Kurahaupo iwi gave another perspective to the politics of the signing. These longstanding historical grievances of all eight Te Tau Ihu iwi were finally settled in 2014. The commemoration events have been taking place for over a decade now, and the feature of this weekend’s activities were visits to the sites transferred to Rangitane under the cultural redress provisions of the deed of settlement, particularly those sites in Cloudy Bay and Port Underwood.

Former lead negotiator for the Kurahaupo treaty settlement negotiations Richard Bradley attended the site visits and shared with those present why these particular Crown properties were selected and how they were seen as important to the cultural identity and future wellbeing of iwi such as Rangitane. The weekend has created a great deal of interest amongst iwi members and supporters, and more site visits are planned.

Huge thanks to our volunteers!

Celebrate a local community group and make sure they are in to WIN!

Live, laugh, share – volunteer! There’s an easy way to thank your community stars this National Volunteer Week. “Live, laugh, share – Volunteer / Kia ringa hora: Me mahi tuao”, that’s the theme for National Volunteer Week 2017, which runs from Sunday 18 to Saturday 24 June. Volunteering is good for you, your community and for the social development of the country. It helps build the social fabric that keeps us connected and engaged in our world. It is important to recognise volunteering and the place it has in keeping our communities strong and healthy. An easy way to recognise the volunteers that touch your community is to enter them in the Trustpower Community Awards. The awards, run in association with the Marlborough District Council recognise the role volunteers and community groups play in making Marlborough a wonderful

place to live. There is more than $5000 up for grabs for community groups across five categories: Heritage and Environment; Health and Wellbeing; Arts and Culture; Sports and Leisure; and Education and Child/ Youth Development. The Supreme Winner of the Marlborough Community Awards will represent their region at the Trustpower National Community Awards in Queenstown next April. Trustpower Community Relations Representative Abbie Siely says everyday Marlborough community members benefit from the hard work of local voluntary groups, and it takes the help of these community

members to ensure they get the thanks they deserve. “Volunteers selflessly give their time to a number of community projects, causes and services that improve peoples’ lives. “They fundraise, coordinate support groups, host events, build things and even organise sporting challenges to keep people active– all of this is often on top of family and work commitments too. “Trustpower wants to celebrate these local good sorts, but need help. “Entering a group into the Community Awards is quick and easy. Anyone can enter a group – groups can even enter

themselves. Entry forms are available at any Council office or service centre, online at www. trustpower.co.nz/communityawards or by calling Trustpower Community Relations on 0800 87 11 11. Entries for the 2017 Trustpower Community Awards close on Friday 11 August, with information forms for the entered groups being accepted until the following Friday. With the advent of Fire & Emergency New Zealand from July 1st, the Marlborough Kaikoura District Fire Authority wishes to thank all of its volunteer fire fighters for the dedication and professionalism they have shown over the past five years in dealing with major fire and emergency events in the Marlborough and Kaikoura districts in support of our communities in need. Fire & Emergency New Zealand commits to supporting our volunteers and our communities whenever and wherever disaster strikes.

English for a new life English is key to accessing work, education and everyday life in New Zealand. English Language Partners helps newer Kiwis feel at home. Volunteers visit people, teaching essential communication skills such as greeting neighbours, shopping and interacting with health providers. As well as teaching refugees and migrants to use English with confidence, volunteers explain the ‘Kiwi way of life’, so people feel they belong here. Volunteer Maria Work helped Re Ber Paw Sein, from Burma, understand how we do things. The two forged a close friendship, and Maria helped Re Ber find her first job at a

cafe. “I was blown away by Re Ber’s determination to get a job. Not so she could be better off, she simply wanted to be contributing and to give a little back,” says Maria. Armed with Re Ber’s CV and a dose of cautious optimism, they approached the manager and Re Ber was offered work on the spot. Re Ber enjoys her work and admits she is far more talkative now. “I can understand the conversation and be a part of it.” The community-based, not-for-profit works with more than 6,600 new Kiwis and 2,300 volunteers annually. www.englishlanguage.org.nz

Sharing special moments By Celeste Alexander Walking into the Alzheimers Marlborough centre on Wither Road, there’s an echo of laughter that is heard coming from the Day Programme. Volunteers like Lynn Wilson and Ann Morgan are just two of the many who give their time with clients. There are currently 60 Day Programme volunteers, including drivers who play an important role in the daily running of the programme. For Lynn, the past year she has been volunteering has been ‘absolutely wonderful’. “The clients are lovely and I enjoy the fact we get to know them, hear about their lives and memories. “They reminisce a lot, tell their stories about their childhoods and experiences. One

chap started telling me about his childhood and after a while I realised he was talking about the place I was born. “It’s making these connections and sharing these special moments that make volunteering for Alzheimers Marlborough so special,” she says. Lynn joined just over a year ago after moving up from Christchurch and chooses to volunteer one morning and one afternoon a fortnight. “Normally volunteers give one day a fortnight but I choose to do more, plus I fill in where needed due to a shortage of volunteers.” It’s the same for Anne who is now in her eighth year of volunteering. “When I had time to volunteer I chose Alzheimers Marlborough because I knew I could do it. I had worked seven

years at a retirement village as an activities coordinator and also my father in law had dementia and I found it easy to care for him. “For me, because I’ve lived in Blenheim since I was a young married woman I know many of the clients who come here, so we have lots to talk about. But the main reason I love my role here is knowing that carers are having some respite and time for themselves,” she says. Alzheimers Marlborough is in need of more people to join their team of Day Programme volunteers in Blenheim and Picton. “Without volunteers, we wouldn’t be able to open our doors,” chairperson Diane Tolley says. “If you can spare a few hours a fortnight, please contact our Alzheimers Marlborough volunteers Lynn Wilson and Ann Morgan love their roles office.” and encourage others to consider doing it too.

Tea and banter highlight of Marie’s day By Celeste Alexander Nine years ago Blenheim woman Marie Wilson saw an advertisement by Enliven Presbyterian Support appealing for volunteers and thought to herself, ‘I might try that’. She hasn’t looked back since and still thoroughly enjoys her time volunteering with the organisation’s Totara Club, which runs five days a week. Marie dedicates one day a week to the club as a kitchen hand and spends the rest of the time interacting with those attending. The Totara Club is a day of socialising for older persons as a way to keep the brain stimulated. Referrals come through Sup-

port Works and up to 16 people attend per day. Activities can be anything from crosswords and card games, through to taking a drive to Picton for fish and chips on the Foreshore. “It’s their day and they make the suggestions of what they want to do. It’s a lot of fun and I really enjoy the day,” Marie laughs. “What I like most about volunteering here is that everyone is different. We have a lot of laughs, giggles and cheeky banter.” Before retiring, Marie and her husband grew export flowers so the volunteering is one of many Enliven Presbyterian Support volunteer Marie Wilson helps once ways she likes to ‘keep busy’. a week with the Totara Club and loves it.

Smiles all round at Blenheim expo By Celeste Alexander This year’s Parent & Child Expo held last Sunday was another success and well attended by families, organisers say. The annual event is held by the Marlborough Parents Centre and is a major fundraiser for the volunteer run organisation. Vice president Emma Riley says around 850 attended the expo, a number she says was ‘a fantastic response’. “The children enjoyed the entertainment, including the bouncy castles, the Bunnings DIY stand and play areas, and parents were able to speak to service providers and

purchase retail items. “We are really thrilled with how well it went, the whole committee is over the moon. “Stall holders were happy and we had some new exhibitors this year who have said they will be back again next year.” After a quick count up, around $7000 was raised and will be going towards providing new parent education classes. Marlborough Parents Centre offers a wide range of courses starting with Child Birth Education (antenatal) classes, through to Baby and You, Moving and Munching as well as Positive Parenting courses.

New Queen Charlotte Track signs Visitors to the Queen Charlotte Track will now be able to learn more about the area, thanks to a series of 15 new interpretation panels that span the length of the 70km track. The signs have been two years in the making, with extensive consultation with the iwi, landowners, commercial operators and community groups who are involved in the track.

The track is managed in partnership between the Department of Conservation, the Marlborough District Council and the Queen Charlotte Track Landowners Co-operative. Most of the stories on the panels are based on features seen from popular viewpoints. Picton community ranger Wendy Sullivan says the department’s consultation told it

that visitors primarily want to know landscape features they are looking at. “There are over 50 stories on the panels, so there should be something of interest for everybody”. Department rangers installed the panels with 12 keen Yealands staff members last week. The interpretation project was funded by Yealands Family Wines.

Moving feast of words There’s plenty of inflight reading available for passengers arriving in or leaving Blenheim this week, with the Marlborough Book Festival book fridge now at the Marlborough Airport. The orange fridge has been moved from its previous location at the Vines Village and replenished with plenty of fresh books for visitors to the airport, Book Festival committee member Sophie Preece says.

“People can take a book or swap a book, or just have a browse while they wait for their plane. It’s a promotion of our winter readers and writers festival, but also a chance to share our love of books.” For more information on the festival, which runs between July 28 and July 30 this winter, visit www.marlboroughbookfest. co.nz or Paper Plus Blenheim.

WINTER 17 0 2 WARMTH Shut out the cold Cold homes have a significant impact on people’s heath. One of the best ways to keep well during winter is to stay warm. In recent years the people of Marlborough have become more active in correctly insulating their homes. If there is a reasonable level of insulation in the ceiling, floor and walls, windows are the main perpetrator of heat loss. Thermal lined curtains and blinds can significantly reduce heat loss through your windows. According to Energywise, “Good curtains and blinds can reduce heat loss through windows by 60% for single glazed windows, and 40-50% for double glazing.”

Leaving curtains and blinds open during the day allows the sun to heat your home and closing them just before dusk means that you are able to retain some of the heat overnight. To provide good insulation your curtains should: - Be made from thick material - Use a minimum of two layers of fabric - Go from floor to ceiling - Fit tightly against the wall or window frame - Be wider than the window frame - Have pelmets above them Talk to your local friendly team at Guthrie Bowron on Main Street, Blenheim for advice, tips and to view their impressive range of curtain fabrics available.

Installing the right thermal curtains can help to retain the warmth within the home.

Burning dry wood in an energy efficient woodburner is recommended.

Burn dry firewood Dry firewood burns hotter than wet wood so provides more heat for your home. Burning dry wood also creates less pollution. For optimal burning, firewood should be dried, or ‘seasoned’, until its moisture content is less than 20 percent. Firewood with a moisture content higher than that may eventually burn, but it is difficult to light and just as hard to keep burning. Also, your new high-efficiency woodburner is guaranteed to perform sluggishly as it struggles to burn freshly split, or ‘green’ firewood, much of the heat

and energy content produced are wasted in drying the wood’s excess moisture. Also, when burning green wood the tars and creosote in the smoke produced by the fire end up lining the inside of your flu pipes and chimney. They also blacken the glass windows of your wood-burning appliances and produce a lot of blue-gray smoke, fouling your house, contributing to air pollution and annoying your neighbours. Aim to burn only dry wood and if you do have green wood, stack it in a dry place ready for next winter.

How do heat pumps work? Heat pumps simply transfer free heat (not air) from one place to another, just like your refrigerator does. The heat that rises from the back of your fridge is coming from inside. An evaporator coil extracts warmth from the air inside, and transfers it out into your kitchen through the condenser coil in the back. Heat pumps work in the same way. Two coils, one inside your home, and one outside are linked to draw warmth from the outside air (even on a cold Kiwi winter’s night) and transfer it into your home. That’s a major advantage over electric or gas heaters, as heat pumps have no heating elements to burn energy. Then, at the click of a switch your heat pump can run in reverse, acting as an air conditioner to pump heat out of your home reducing humidity and keeping

it fresh and cool in summer. Do heat pumps really save money? Heat pumps are efficient in cold weather. Using a heat pump can save you money compared to other forms of heating. A heat pump’s running costs depend on how long you use it and its energy output. According to energywise.govt.nz, a heat pump used six hours per day for six months of the year with an energy output of 6KwH could cost around $400 per year to run. So, if you use a heat pump instead of an equivalent electric heater in your living space can save you around $500 a year. But oil or fan heaters do have their places in your home, particularly for heating small spaces, such as a study, or a bedroom for short periods of time.

Gymnastics champs By Cathie Bell Former Commonwealth Games gymnast Anna Tempero will be back competing in this weekend’s Marlborough Gymnastic Championships. Blenheim Gymnastics Club secretary Jenni Eatherley says more than 550 competitors from throughout New Zealand will be competing, coming from as far afield as Auckland, Wellington, Ashburton, Christchurch, and the West Coast. She says it is also the first of the qualifying events for those from Nelson, the West Coast and Marlborough vying for selection to the Top of the South Provincial team to Nationals which will be held in Nelson in October 2017. “It is great to have our own Anna Tempero still competing in Marlborough colours. Tasman Makos’ assistant coach Leo Crowley has started work this month. Crowley, the younger brother of former All Blacks and Taranaki fullback Kieran Crowley, takes over from Mark Hammett who decided to remain fulltime with the Highlanders’ Super Rugby team. Crowley has an extensive coaching background.

Geldenhuys released Tasman prop Ross Geldenhuys has been released from his rugby contract on compassionate grounds and won’t be rejoining the Makos for this year’s Mitre 10 Cup national provincial competition after playing for South African franchise the Southern Kings in this year’s Super Rugby competition. Geldenhuys joined Tasman in 2014 and has played 33 games for the province. He also played 21 games for the Highlanders’ Super Rugby team before signing with the Kings this year.

Women’s tri gets new sponsor The Marlborough Women’s Triathlon has lost long-time sponsor Jules Taylor Wines, but it has been picked up by another Marlborough wine label, The Sisters. The Sisters is a wine brand owned by Lawson’s Dry Hills, one of the pioneers of the Marlborough wine industry. Lawson’s Dry Hills group marketing manager Belinda Jackson took part in the triathlon for the

first time last year. She says it’s a great association for The Sisters brand. “We’re about celebrating the achievement, and we know that for many women, completing the Women’s Tri is an extraordinary achievement. “We can’t wait to be part of it.” Entries opened only two weeks ago, and already over one hundred women have signed up, event organiser Mark Grammer

says. “That’s a record for this time of year, and we’ve still got six months to go.” Based at Stadium 2000 in Blenheim, this year’s event on November 26 will have a 5km run/walk, 14km cycle and 100m swim. This is much the same successful formula used since the first race in 1983. Women can enter as an indi-

First round of knockout cup football The Central teams look the goods after the first round of knockout cup football in the weekend. Central Pirates were too good for Blenheim Valley Masters winning 7-0 sharing the goals but Sam Pearson grabbed a double. Scott Wilkinson scored a hat-trick as Central trounced Blenheim Valley Cobras 6-1. Rangers City put three past third division side Rangers Masters while Rangers Development tasted success again thanks to a 2-1 victory over Picton Panel and Paint with Liam Nelson the hero for Development scoring in extra time. Rangers United capped off a good day

for the club with a 2-0 win over Redwood Masters with goals from Nicky Smith-Scott and Jarrad Johl. The battle of the Trojans went the way of Trojans beating the Spartans 4-1 with Devon Cook scoring a brace. Blenheim Valley United put 10 past Picton Crow Tavern while injury-ravaged Clubs of Marlborough Rangers defaulted to Blenheim Valley Woodbourne. The knockout Cup quarter finals draw sees the Central sides pitted against each other and Rangers City taking on Ranger Development which will be intriguing to see the progression of the development side.
