Done it again Joseph helps win cup

Not only does Joseph Sullivan have an Olympic gold medal to his name, he can now claim sailing’s top prize as well, being part of the Emirates Team New Zealand winning the America’s Cup. Joe’s parents were in Rangiora but there were plenty of Picton people cheering him on to victory yesterday. Now, people are thinking how the seaside town can mark this success. Joseph helps Team NZ bring home Auld Mug Continued from page 1 After his Olympic success, Joseph had a street named after him – the road that leads from Waikawa Road to the Endeavour Park Pavilion and sports ground. A billboard was also put up at Nelson Park to show the pride his hometown has in him. A council spokeswoman says enquiries are being made on what can be done locally to mark the America’s Cup win. “It’s early days yet.” Marlborough mayor John Leggett says he has sent a message to Joseph today on behalf of the district, congratulating him on his part in Team New Zealand’s ‘fantastic’ victory in reclaiming the America’s Cup. “There’s no doubt the men on the pedals were an integral part of the New Zealand crew and we are all proud to know that Joseph acquitted himself so well in that physically demanding role. “Not that we should be surprised; the grit that made a young Picton rower into an Olympic gold double-sculler has now propelled him into sailing history. “It’s a rare achievement for any athlete to be among the international elite of two

different sports and it surely means Joseph is one of Marlborough’s highest achieving athletes.” Picton Smart&Connected group chairwoman Chrissy Powlesland says she is keen for the group to champion the success of Joe. “What a legend!!” Chrissy got up early to watch the race with friends, saying the Sullivans were in Rangiora. She says it would be amazing to have the Auld Mug and the Emirates Team New Zealand team come through Picton. “I wonder if they’re planning a road trip throughout New Zealand? “I’m sure Queen Charlotte Yacht Club would love to have their young sailors greet the team on the foreshore. We’re so lucky to have the beautiful harbour so close by! “I’m in no doubt the town would get behind welcoming Joe Sullivan with a ticker tape parade - what a legend!” Auckland mayor Phil Goff says there will be a parade and welcome home for the cup in central Auckland, but the date and route need to be confirmed and more details will be available in the next couple of days.

Tourism report headed for merger review By Cathie Bell A review of tourism marketing suggests merging the management of the theatre and convention centre, as well as taking another look at merging tourism marketing with wider economic development activities. Tomorrow’s full council meeting is to consider the findings of a report done by independent consultant Richard Jefferies on Marlborough destination marketing is delivered, how it is received outside the region, and whether stakeholders are receiving maximum value.

Richard was also contracted to review the ASB Civic Theatre Trust after the last council grant. Councillors are being asked to prioritise terms of reference for venue management and alignment, and for a review of economic development levels of services as part of the work on the Long Term Plan due next year. The report, which is not available publicly yet, says more than 50 stakeholders were interviewed, with feedback ‘passionate, open and constructive on the whole’. “All are in agreement

that Marlborough is a great place to live or visit, with an abundance of activity and lifestyle options, with two clear visitor brand offerings being ‘Wine Region’ and ‘Marlborough Sounds’.” Many of the report’s recommendations listed in the council’s agenda paper are not new and require extra funding. Richard suggests setting up new jobs at Destination Marlborough to look after small operators and to give more funds to event organisers to set up new events.

Swimming pool closed as precaution By Cathie Bell The Marlborough Lines Stadium 2000 Aquatic Centre is expected to reopen today after being shut for almost a week after contamination fears. Cheif executive Paul Tredinnick says a second round of tests showed clear results last night. The pool was shut on Friday after Nelson-Marlborough Public Health Service said there might be a link to the pools after recently reported cryptosporidium cases in Marlborough. Paul says the pool’s ‘first, second and third priorities are the health and safety of our customers’. “We are being proactive and closing the aquatic facilities until we have tested and treated for Cryptosporidium, to be sure we are providing the best quality water we can.” “Clearly the pool doesn’t

generate any contamination but we certainly don’t want to be an agent of spread,” he says. Yesterday, he says the pool has been tested several times with no positive result for cryptospyridium, and it was waiting for final tests due at 5pm. If those are clear, he will negotiate with public health and the council to re-open today. Medica l Off icer of Health Dr Andrew Lindsay says the pool closure is a precautionary measure to prevent more cryptosporidium cases. Seven of the 10 cases reported to the Nelson Marlborough Health Public Health Service have visited the complex. He says the Public Health Service is looking for other possible sources of contamination “People may not be aware that swimming too

Pedestrian dies The pedestrian struck by a car at the intersection of Colemans Road and Orchard Lane in Springlands last week has died from his injuries, police say. The man was 30 year-old Joseph Benjamin Burtogg of Blenheim. The Serious Crash Unit investigation into the circumstance surrounding the crash is ongoing and Police offer their sympathies to the friends and family of Mr Burtogg at this sad time.

Spring Creek - night closure Heavy trucks are to be detoured away from State Highway 62 from tonight for three nights as part of the construction of the Spring Creek roundabout. State Highway 62 or Rapaura Road will be closed between Jacksons Road and the State Highway one intersection, so contractors can carry out pavement strengthening work, from 7pm-7am, tonight till tomorrow morning, Thursday evening till Friday morning and Friday evening to Saturday morning. Drivers will be detoured down State Highway Six, or Middle Renwick Road, onto Jacksons Road before rejoining SH62. Access for residents will be maintained throughout the closures.

The pools have been empty since last Friday and it’s hoped they will reopen today.

soon after being sick with diarrhoea is a risk for passing infection onto other pool users,” Andrew says. He advises people to stay away from swimming pools for two weeks after they have recovered to

avoid infecting others. Symptoms may include large amounts of watery diarrhoea and stomach cramps. Lack of appetite, fever, nausea and vomiting sometimes occur.

The best way to prevent cryptosporidiosis infection is to always practice good hand washing and drying after using the toilet, changing nappies and before preparing or eating food.

Sites still being investigated By Cathie Bell Council staff are still working on potential sites, but it looks like the disabled toilets to be built with a hoist and adult changing facilities will be built as part of the Queen Street toilet block in central Blenheim. Hularii and Amber Mckenzie asked the Marlborough District Council to provide an adult changing facility in Blenheim, but were initially turned down after annual plan hearings.

Their oldest child, seven yearold Bailey, is wheelchair-bound with Spastic Quadriplegic Cerebral Palsy and Epilepsy among other conditions. There is a facility at the Stadium 2000 that people can use, but that is not always available as it gets booked out. “We among other families have literally had to change our growing children in the boots of our cars because there is nowhere close to do it.”

After the Mackenzies approached the Sun, the council had another look at the issue. Council’s property and community facilities manager Jamie Lyall says staff are close to a decision on where the specialised toilet and changing facilities could go within Blenheim’s central business district. The facilities need to have a hoist and adult-size changing table. He said it would not be a public

Yachties found on island A beached yacht with four men onboard, two from Marlborough, has been found after making a distress call at dawn off the coast of Fiji. facility in the usual sense but accessed only by the families or carers of those requiring use of such specialised facilities, probably by way of a swipe card. “This would be an amenity used by only a very few people with particular high needs and, given the level of vandalism at our public toilets, it would have to be accessible by security card only.” The existing toilet block at Liz Davison Place on Queen Street is the most likely site.

Giveaway winner There were 61 entries received in the Wither Hills degustation dinner on June 29 by the cutoff time and date, and the winner was Dave Paterson of Blenheim. Organisers will be in touch with you to deliver your prize tickets.

By Cathie Bell Pest trapping is underway at the Grovetown Lagoon, and organisers hope that others will buy traps to help their efforts and to start their own pest control work. Grovetown Lagoon’s pest control coordinator Hamish Beard says traps and the tunnel boxes housing them are for sale and sales help raise funds for the lagoon restoration project. For $100, a trap, tunnel box, and bait will be supplied, along with a ‘how-to’ session, he says. Hamish runs three traplines at the lagoon, which borders Steam Wharf Road, with about 20 traps on each line.

He is trying to trap rats, both Norway and ship rats, stoats, and ferrets. The lines have been in place for about two months, and Hamish has already caught a stoat, which is a fierce predator. They are using three different types of bait. One is a fish-flavoured polymer, which targets mustelids, another uses fresh hens’ eggs, and the third uses a chocolate-scented polymer, aimed especially at rats. “The hens’ eggs are very popular.” Trap position is also important, he says. Certain traps seem to ‘work better’, Hamish says, with two by bridges catching most pests. “They are ratty sort of places, right near the water.”

Linda Thompson on the Picton foreshore with some recyclable bags created for International Plastic Bag Free day on July 3.

Campaign to free Picton of plastic bag menace By Glenise Dreaver July 3 is International Plastic Bag Free Day and Linda Thompson of Picton is leading the charge in the town. She and her supporters will celebrate Plastic Bag Free Picton with a sewing bee in the Mall making recycled fabric bags. There will also be demonstrations of knitting and crocheting a handbag from recycled plastic bags. “They’re beautiful!” Linda says. Queen Charlotte College is organising a photo competition and fashion parade around the theme that plastic is bad for our environment. Picton School will also have a display and Waikawa School plans a project later. “It’s not a one-off.” They aim for Picton to be the first plasticbag free town in New Zealand and local retailers are right in behind them, Linda says.

“It’s about keeping our oceans safe for sea animals and sea birds, who already have so much plastic in their stomachs.” She’s very grateful that Marlborough’s mayor John Leggett is behind them. Marlborough District Council has provided the group with 1000 free reusable green bags and retailers will distribute these on the day Recycled material bags can be purchased for a gold coin donation. Linda described a recent walk with friends along Marfell’s Beach, which at first seemed very clean. “But as we walked back, we found ourselves picking up huge amounts of plastic. “Our back packs were laden and we were also carrying plastic under our arms. “There was plastic everywhere.” The display will run in Mariners’ Mall in Picton from 11am and run until 3pm.

Biting back on fluoride Dear Ed, In the June 16th issue of the Sun. Judith Crowe, who is a member of the Nelson Marlborough D.H.B used her position to publicly oppose Community Water Fluoridation. This initiative is backed by most of the major dental and medical institutions world wide, including New Zealand Judy states that Denmark has

never fluoridated it’s water, which is true, but she omits to mention that most of Denmark has natural fluoride levels close to those used in C.W.F. The Nexo initiative she mentions only applies to a couple of towns that don’t have natural fluoride levels. Chris Price Palmerston North Abridged.

Dear Ed, Judy Crowe should get the sack. How can she be a representative of the Nelson Marlborough District Health Board and go against the advice of the chief dental officer of the region, for an ill-informed jump on a bandwagon? She rightly thinks we should look after the ‘poor and ignorant’, and wants to educate them. Well, everyone knows there is never enough money for all we want in education, so let’s look after the poor by making them healthier straight away. A small amount of research would have revealed to her that

the reason Denmark does not fluoridate its water is because it already contains naturally occurring fluorides, their geology being different from ours. The New Zealand Government is aiming to increase our country’s natural fluoride levels to between 0.7 and one part per million, which is similar to the levels that occur naturally in Denmark’s water supply. I’m in my sixties. I have lived overseas with a fluoridated water supply and I have a cavity-less smile, which is more than can be said for a lot of teeth in Blenheim. Gnasher Blenheim

Overgrown Dear Ed, About two months ago in response to a notice in the local paper by the local Council, regarding bushes overgrowing the footpath. I reported one such instance on Kingwell Drive. One month later I again called the Council office regarding this bush telling them nothing had been done. Guess what? Still nothing has been done. Kiwi Blenheim

Correct light Dear Ed, Please could someone explain to me what the obsession is with regard to illegally driving around with front fog lights on? It is a growing phenomenon which is getting worse, so much so that even so called professional drivers i.e. truck drivers and taxi drivers, who should know better, are doing it. These lights are intended to be used only when the weather is such that visibility is down to less than 100 meters due to fog. That’s why they call them fog lights, not daytime - or night time running - lights. It’s illegal! Fog lights dazzle other road users causing a potential hazard as they are not a focused beam such as head lights. Fog lights cause you to use more fuel, potentially up to 2 per cent.

Driving with fog lights on when its not foggy, you run the risk of a $150 fine because its illegal. Which brings me to my next point. Why is this not being stopped by New Zealand Police? Even if its just people being informed of their indiscretion at WOF and registration check points or booze bus stops. If the cops stopped everyone who had their fog lights on, they would make much more money than $50 speeding tickets. That was sarcasm by the way as cops do not, in my opinion, revenue gather. Check this out. https://www.nzta.govt.nz/ resources/get-your-lights-right/ get-your-lights-right/#front Please turn your fog lights off. John Singleton Blenheim

Tom is the writer, director, producer and leading man in his original rock opera ‘Allergic To Love’. The show performed in the Wellington Fringe Festival in February winning the two national touring awards and being invited to the San Diego Fringe Festival. The band has worked incredibly hard to raise the funds required to send them to San Diego including presenting two sell out shows in Blenheim at Biddy Kate’s Irish Bar. The NZ Fringe Festival in

Wellington is one of two major festivals produced under the Creative Capital Arts Trust, and general manager Kate Louise Elliott says it has ‘fantastic relationships’ with the major Fringe Festivals in Australia that provide reciprocal arrangements for our artists to tour there. “The San Diego tour award is brand new and proving that the possibilities for our artists are endless.” She says ‘Allergic to Love’ is taking the International San Diego Fringe Festival by storm appearing on morning television and performing to hundreds at the San Diego and Mexico Fringe Festivals.

Renwick-to-river cycle track Cyclists can now reach the Wairau River on a purposebuilt cycletrack. The new section of the Renwick-to-River trail is a 500m long, two metre-wide ‘off-road’ path running parallel to State Highway Six from Rapaura Road to Newman’s Road and then under the Wairau Bridge to the Conders Bend bike track. It’s the second stage of Renwick’s cycling route which follows the quieter side streets of Renwick to Blicks Road, and then goes ‘off road’ through the Forrest Estate winery, crossing Foxes Island Road to reach this newly completed section of

pathway. The Renwick Smart & Connected Bike Walk Working Group has overseen the completion of this second stage of the cycleway. Working hroup spokesman Steve Hill says the aim was to provide a safe, family-friendly cycling, walking and jogging pathway to the popular river reserve area at the Wairau Bridge. “It’s a safe path for joggers, cyclists and walkers including family groups with prams or pushchairs. “The pathway will be used even more now that it’s linked to the river stop banks and the Conders Bend mountain bike track.”

Watson legacy lives on Paul Watson and Pat Sutherland have sold Watson’s Way Lodge in Renwick after 20 years. They talk to reporter Celeste Alexander about the Watson family’s history that has strong ties to the area.

Paul and Pat have long been respected in the Renwick community. Not only through the running of their lodge, but also for their work with the Red Cross. Paul admits to share stories of their travels and feats would take ‘quite a while’, so instead they spoke of their time in Renwick and the history behind the Watson family. “Over the 20 years we have hosted 49,000 plus guests who have stayed for more than 90,500 nights. “They have bought on average more than $100,000 worth of groceries a year, enjoyed untold meals in the area and supported all the activities available. “It’s these people that remind us that we live in a most wonderful part of the world,” they say. What many people may not know is that Paul’s family were heavily ingrained in Renwick after arriving in New Zealand in 1842. Paul’s grandmother moved to Renwick in 1845 as one of her sons had come for the Onamalutu gold rush.

She later became an ‘unofficial midwife and district nurse’. His grandfather set up the blacksmiths on the corner of High and Alma Streets where the petrol station is now. This business evolved over time to specialise in building, hardware and even groceries.

“The Watson family provided a cradle to grave service... they had it all sewn up.” “The family made furniture, did interior decorating and even made coffins. “They also supplied a horsedrawn hearse which cost 15 pounds to use and increased to 20 pounds once a motorised hearse came in. “My cousin used to dig the graves for 10 shillings.” Paul’s father Herbert was working as a builder when a tragic accident cost him his right arm.

“He was involved in the build of a cheese factory at Canvastown and was using a barrel for scaffolding. “He tipped over and fell through one of the windows, cutting it badly. “His arm was put in a tourniquet and the workers thought he had died, so they left him there on the table in the building. “His mother found him the next morning, still alive and took him to Blenheim. “By then gangrene had set in so his arm was taken off. “He had to retrain after that, and ended up teaching primary school. “He was the only one-armed fellow I’ve seen who could use a wheelbarrow. “There was virtually nothing he couldn’t do... he was a good example of a man who could do anything,” Paul says. Herbert married his first wife Olga in the 1930s but she died three months later. In her memory Herbert and his family built a library and reading room which is now known as the

Memorial Library at the Renwick Museum. Herbert became good friends with Norm Brayshaw and together had an amazing vision for Renwick and set up the start of the museum. “Dad got people to donate concrete blocks for the extension on the library and kept a list of who did which is at the library now.” Herbert remarried a woman named Jean and together they kept it going over the years. Before his death, Herbert donated that section of property to the town so that the museum could benefit Renwick for generations to come. Paul inherited land years later and with Pat, they built Watson’s Way Lodge. “The idea to build the backpackers came when we were working in Papau New Guinea. “We came home and organised the builder, Dylan Kerr to begin construction and opened it in 1997. “We have met so many interesting people over the years and some have become lifelong friends, but the time has come for us to retire.”

CONFERENCE / EVENTS / FUNCTIONS

Acoustics, space and location When planning a function or conference there are many important decisions to make, however one of the most important is choosing the best venue. It involves much more than simply selecting the first available space. Here are some factors to consider when choosing a venue. Type of event Certain types of events, like press conferences, shareholder meetings, board meetings, and other formal affairs will require a different type of space than more casual

gatherings like theme parties and networking sessions. Decor and lighting can influence the overall feel. You may want a space you can customise or technology that is essential to your needs. Expected number of attendees The space must be sufficient for the number of people you have attending. You want them to feel comfortable and have space to move around. Location Choose a location that is acces-

sible by the majority of attendees. Will there be adequate parking, a shuttle service available and is there disabled access if required? Budget Before signing off on venues, catering and entertainment, ensure that your budget covers absolutely everything you need. Acoustics Acoustics a re pa r ticula rly important at any event with key attractions like notable speakers or live performances.

Setting up a conference venue.

Fuel your guests ConferenCe Centre Available for conference and business meetings. Catering options available, tailored to suit your needs.

97 High Street, Blenheim. For bookings and enquiries please email conference@chateaumarlborough.co.nz or call 03 578 0064

One of the more fun parts to plan of any event is the food. An event planner must find the perfect caterer for each unique event to keep your guests happy with food and drinks. Morning functions/conferences No morning conference can be without coffee and don’t skimp. Include decaf coffee. Also have caffeinated and decaffeinated teas available, as well as fresh juices and if you want to go one step further, have fruit smoothies made from natural fruits and Greek yoghurt. Provide plentiful water. Pastries, muffins, bagels with butter and cream cheese on the side. A large fruit tray is also a great option. Lunch is served Simple sandwiches are a great choice, and something you generally can’t go wrong with. Make sure you offer several different choices, including gluten free, dairy and vegetarian alternatives. Pizza, small burritos, mini burgers and

wraps are great hot options, and again you can offer a variety. Wrap them in tin foil and put a sticker on the outside saying what they are. Kebabs are another great choice, easy to eat with one hand and you can serve a variety of meat and veggies. You might take everything off the stick and offer a few dipping sauces on the side. Snacks are key Grab and go packaged foods like granola bars, nuts, sweets and chocolate are easiest. These could easily be included in a package your guests receive at registration. You can put out trays of cookies and bowls of fruit. We also recommend serving coffee and tea again mid afternoon. A caffeine boost can liven the after-lunch lull. An experienced caterer should have great ideas, likewise venues such as hotels, motels and local pubs also have the ability to put together a delicious menu for your event.

There are many delicious options for catering.

Combine inspirational messages with sufficient activity to keep the audience bright and alert. Here are nine tactics to make your next conference captivating. - One clear message is better than half a dozen points that could be confused or forgotten. - Encourage interaction between delegates by seating people at tables instead of side by side in rows. - Less lectures, more video clips. Interviews and team activities will maintain energy and attention. - Fabulous food means cheerful delegates. - Make it fun as when we

laugh, we learn. If your message really matters, make it engaging and enjoyable. - Movement keeps oxygenated blood pumping to the brain, whereas sitting still for more than 30 minutes induces drowsiness. - Pick a place that supports your message and culture. A new venue will raise expectations and lead to a more memorable event. - Appeal to different learning styles, every audience will have a mix of theorists, activists, pragmatists and reflectors, be sure to vary the programme to suit each. - End on a high by giving out awards, announcing new information or throwing a party.

Most of the people presume that January sees the heaviest babies because of all the holiday eating, but that’s completely false. Researchers say that May babies are the heaviest. They usually weigh around 200 grams heavier than any other month’s born babies. The heaviest baby to be born was a boy weighing 22 pounds and 8 ounces. He was born in Italy in 1955.

By Cathie Bell Popping into the Four Square store in Spring Creek to buy soup after rugby on a cold day has won Lynne Broughan a $10,000 travel voucher. Lynne says the win is very exciting, ‘we never win anything’. The family is not sure where they will go with the prize yet, she says. “The obvious thing would be back to Scotland, but we’ve not decided yet.” Spring Creek Four Square owner Tommy Glubb says the competition was run over

four weeks in the 69 South Island Four Square stores. “We got picked out of the hat, and this customer was picked out of our entries, it’s very, very exciting.” He says the Spring Creek store has always been a lucky store. “We have given away travel prizes, a mountain bike, and bits and pieces. “It’s fantastic to keep the good luck running. “It’s really good it was able to go to a good regular customer of ours too.”

Singers aim for zinging impact By Cathie Bell Blenheim-based community singing group, The Thursday Zingers, hope to make a splash at a candle-light concert in Nelson Cathedral on Saturday. They will be ‘disguised’ in what choir leader Pam Nicholls describes as ‘zingy! yellow sou’westers’, to present the Unst Boat Song during the concert. Pam says the group is excited to be joining seven other choirs from the Top of the South in Saturday’s concert. “We’ve been having a lot of fun, rising to

the challenge of preparing five songs new to us for the massed singing, as well as two which our own group will perform,” she says. The repertoire is drawn from around the world and includes Bortnianski’s Tibie Paiom from the Slavic Orthodox tradition, Vuma from Africa, Nga Iwi E, and a lilting Scottish song, Ca’ the Yowes. If people are interested in tickets for the candlelit concert in Nelson or in joining Blenheim’s Thursday Zingers next term, ring Pam on 021 046 4841 for more information.

Call the professionals Their time and knowledge can avoid costly mistakes The temptation to ‘save money’ and ‘do-ityourself’ is often a leading factor in people taking charge of their own projects, health and finances. While it might sound appealing, it can acutally cause additional stress and lead to bigger problems later on. It’s important to know when to call on the professionals. There will be times you need a professional’s time and knowledge, whether its securing finance, insurance or checking up on a health issue that has been nagging you over time. Enlisting the help of a professional can help you make informed decisions, which in turn can help you or your business grow. Here are some situations when you’d be wise to pay for expert advice. A big purchase Whether you’re considering buying a house, business or purchasing a new piece of equipment you’d be wise to ask for help from someone who specialises in that type of field. Otherwise, if you go it alone, you may end

up spending money on something you don’t need or on the wrong product, especially with technology. Once you have made the purchase, make sure you have access to experts who can guide you in using or implementing it. Situations involving accounting or legal issues Unless you’re qualified, don’t try to bluff your way through financial or legal situations. A misstep at any point in the process can become extremely costly. Paying for expert advice up front will help you avoid mistakes or oversights that would mean additional trouble. Expert advice can save you money in the long run. The same is said about your health If you are experiencing pain and discomfort, for example in your feet, don’t put up with the pain and instead visit a podiatrist who can help to diagnose and/or find a solution. There’s always an advantage to having a professional giving you advice and if they have the expertise and experience you’re looking for, it will be worth every dollar.

Top of the South offers bonus Three New Zealand based education agents visited the Top of the South region last week for a three day trip to explore what the region has to offer international students. Hosted by Education NelsonMarlborough, the agents based in Wellington, Christchurch and Auckland were impressed with the lifestyle, pastoral care, and the quality and range of education available in the region. Lydia Zeng, director of I NZ Education & Tourism based in Christchurch says the Nelson-Marlborough region is stunning with beautiful scenery and a great climate. “There is so much to attract international students here. The region

is New Zealand’s best kept secret in terms of international education - I had no idea you have so much to offer students.” The highlight of the tour was a hands-on pruning session at Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology (NMIT) Marlborough campus, visiting the diverse range of secondary schools in the region, and a tour of the Te Waikoropupu Springs in Golden Bay. Education Nelson-Marlborough project manager Zoe Gray said that familiarisation trips are the perfect way for agents to experience NelsonMarlborough first hand and capture their attention. The agents said that they were

impressed by the region’s sunny climate, the wide range and quality of education provision, the array of courses on offer, the low ratio of international students per school, and the fact that are so many cultural and sporting activities for students to take part in. Figures released in March showed that international education was worth $33.2m to the Nelson, Tasman and Marlborough region in the 2015/16 financial year; when adding the spin off to other businesses in the region from 1700 international students a total of 334 jobs were created and the local economy was boosted by $33.2 million overall (excluding tax).

Be wary of sun strike As the days continue to get shorter with the onset of the winter months, drivers should be wary of the risk of sunstrike. Marlborough Highway Patrol team leader Barrie Greenall says sunstrike tends to be an issue for Marlborough drivers each year. “We tend to have incidents every year where people have been affected by sunstrike … the biggest problem is unexpected sunstrike, when the driver is not expecting it and hasn’t taken the basic precautions, that’s when it can really cause issues,” he says. With parallel roads that run east to west, there was no one place in Marlborough which was known as a ‘trouble spot’. “Our roads run in parallels, and they run east to west, and right at this time of year they line up almost perfectly with the rising and setting sun,” Barrie says. On windy roads sunstrike can also pose a problem for drivers turning corners, and not expecting to be struck by sunstrike, Barrie says. While sunstrike is hard to avoid for drivers

heading to and from work at the same time each day, they reduce the impact by ensuring all windows on their vehicles are clear. “People really need to make sure they have a clean windscreen, inside and out, it’s the inside of the windows which get that film that you don’t notice until something like sunstrike happens. “And all windows, not just the windscreen, you need to be able to look out for the safety of yourself and other road users at junctions,” Barrie says. Ensuring windows were clear of frost and condensation is also vital. If a driver is impacted by sunstrike, it is important to slow down gently, rather than coming to an abrupt stop, before coming to a halt, if necessary. “Don’t brake suddenly, because if anyone is behind you, they are going to be affected by the same thing as you; what you are experiencing, the person behind you is also experiencing,” Barrie says.
