Joshua’s last show before going pro Continued from page 1 Featuring in the lead roles are Joshua as Prince Florimunde, Samantha Grammer as Aurora, Sophie Overend as the evil Carrabosse Fairy and Elly Molloy as the Lilac Fairy, who will be delivering what artistic director Jeannie Mark describes as ‘very demanding and challenging’ roles. “At the beginning we weren’t sure if Joshua was coming back to Blenheim so we didn’t want such a challenging ballet, but when he confirmed he was coming we changed tack. “This production will be providing a lot of experience for the senior members of the cast as it’s very demanding and they are on point the whole show. “The outcome is that they will gain so much strength and value out of the challenges they face, and for the younger members they get a buzz when they see Joshua,” she says. There will be plenty of entertainment for younger members of the audience,

Jeannie says, with casts including fairies, princesses, Puss in Boots and the White Cat, Red Riding Hood and the Wolf to name a few. “It’s definitely a production for all ages to enjoy,” she says. For Joshua who arrived on Sunday, Sleeping Beauty is ‘the ideal preparation’ for his first job at Houston Ballet. “Gosh yes, it’s been amazing coming back and working with Jeannie. It’s become such a family here too and it’s amazing seeing Samantha who I last danced with when she was younger, so to see her be consistent, strong and in a lead role is great to see. “It’s also a good opportunity for me to be dancing everyday at a high level before starting with the Houston Ballet Company in just under three weeks time,” he says. Tickets are selling well for the production. To avoid disappointment get your tickets now for the two shows, July 9 at 4pm and July 10 at 7pm at the ASB Theatre.

Worlds extreme challenge for Richard By Cathie Bell Extreme runner Richard Avery successfully competed for New Zealand in last weekend’s world 24 hour running championships in Belfast, Ireland. Richard completed 114 laps of the course, totalling 189.79 km, and came in 99th. He was half the New Zealand team along with Tuakau’s Kim Allen, who had to pull out of the race part-way through when she had health issues. There were also six supporters there, with Richard’s father and mother, Doug and Wendy Avery from Lake Grassmere, in Belfast to cheer him on. Richard says he had been saying to himself for the past five months that ‘this race was going to be the toughest 24

hours of my life’. “It was exactly that.” He says he started getting sciatic nerve pain about half an hour into the race, and the 18 hours were ‘about as much fun as running and walking on concrete with sore legs can be’. “The final hour was amazing. The Irish supporters, every single lap, were yelling and cheering at the top of their lungs with utmost enthusiasm. “It’s a memory that I’ll hold forever.” After the race, Richard says ‘from the waist up I’m great, but destroyed below’. “I’d love to think I can get fit enough to try and qualify to do it all over again and potentially improve on that performance, but fully aware of how lucky I am to be able to do it once.”

College teams score a smart look

The Sun

By Bill McElhinney Marlborough Boys’ College basketball teams are taking to the court with a new sense of pride and purpose, sporting smart new uniforms. The new shorts and tops have been provided by the Marlborough Stadium Trust. Stadium chief executive, Paul Tredinnick, says their charitable trust aims to support school sports groups that use the stadium. “We try to get behind the local secondary schools,” he says. “It helps the youngsters develop a sense of pride and commitment. “We have a school sports development programme, and providing uniforms is just one part of this.” Volunteer basketball coach Eva Francis says the new uniforms have really lifted the teams. “We have a new uniform for the three social basketball teams and a new uniform for the senior and junior A teams. “You can see the pride in the boys as they take the court in their new gear. “They’re all trying to be like (Oklahoma City Thunder NBA star) Steven Adams! Looking good and playing better.” Eva, who played basketball herself, has a son in one of the college teams and gives her time to help coach and manage the young players. Marlborough Boys’ College basketball team members Cody Popplewell, Bailey Wairepo and The college has five teams of 10 boys, with Blade Campbell wearing the teams’ new uniforms. each team playing once or twice a week.

Fuel too high in south A government study has found fuel prices are higher than they should be in the South Island, and confirms the fuel market has ‘features which may not be consistent with a workably competitive market’, Energy and Resources Minister Judith Collins says. The study found that retail fuel margins have increased significantly over the last five years while fuel margins for aviation and commercial road users have been flat or falling, and higher petrol prices in the South Island and Wellington are not explained by higher costs in those areas.

Sewage in Picton water Overflow from a blocked sewer pipe caused sewage to flow into Waitohi Stream and into Picton harbour last week, leading the Marlborough District Council to warn people not to swim in the foreshore or at Shelley Beach, and not to collect shellfish. Council’s contractors cleared the blockage at the site on Thursday. The Council’s upgrade of the Picton sewerage system will see five kilometres of new pipeline laid under the town, three pump stations re-built, two pump stations upgraded and a new treatment facility at Dublin Street. The staged project is due for completion in 2019.

Govt expands RSE worker scheme The Government is to spend $10 million expanding the Recognised Seasonal Employer (RSE) scheme but isn’t sure how many extra workers will be imported and which industries they will work in yet. Foreign Minister Gerry Brownlee and Immigration Minister Michael Woodhouse announced yesterday $10 million in new funding to expand Pacific labour mobility, as the RSE scheme celebrates ten years of success. “Due to the scheme’s success, the Government has approved $10 million over an initial five-year period to explore what other sectors of the economy – where there

is continued high demand for labour – RSE workers are well placed to make a contribution to,” Gerry says. “In particular, the Government will be exploring employment opportunities for Pacific women and develop prospects in semi-skilled, higher-income occupations.” His spokeswoman says the number of extra workers likely to be involved in this expansion aren’t available at this stage as the announcement has only just been made. But it is likely to be in construction, fisheries and tourism. “All this will be worked out.” Michael says 10 years on, the scheme

is still regarded as ground-breaking and among the most effective development policies in the world. “During its 10 years, the RSE scheme has more than doubled from 5,000 seasonal workers in 2007 to 10,500 in 2017, and has played a key role in supporting industry growth in New Zealand’s horticulture and viticulture sectors,” he says. “At the heart of the scheme’s success are the strong relationships that have been forged over the last decade with government and industry, and with the highly valued Pacific workers who are welcomed into our communities each year.”

Annette King visits A n n e t te K i n g M P w i l l v i s i t Marlborough this Friday, visiting local health providers to understand the challenges and opportunities they face. She will also visit Picton, and several of its tourism providers, who support the region’s growing and important tourism market. Annette will be holding a public meeting at 3:30pm in the foyer of Rangitane House, which provides the community with an opportunity to share ideas and to hear more about Labour’s fresh approach to building a better New Zealand.

Tai Chi good way to move By Cathie Bell Interest in Tai Chi is growing in Marlborough and new classes are being offered in response. Instructor Nancy Sherwood is working with Diabetes Marlborough to provide Tai Chi to members of the support group nurse Mary Johnsen runs. “The best way to ecourage people to exercise is to give a demonstration and motivate them to join in,” says Nancy. She plans to offer a 10 session introductory beginners course towards the end of July, open to anyone who is interested and with a 20 per cent discount for those with diabetes. The beginners course will start after school holidays, starting on Thursday

July 27, running for an hour from 4pm at the Redwoodtown Community Centre at Oliver Park. She is also considering a short course of Tai Chi for Children which could run for parents and children during the July school holidays if there is enough interest. Tai Chi is an ancient form of exercise originating in China. Although Tai Chi mirrors martial arts moves, it is taught as a gentle dance-like moving meditation. Nancy Sherwood trained as a Tai Chi instructor 10 years ago. She has been teaching ever since with classes in Redwoodtown, the dharma shed in Wairau Valley and more recently Wellness Station, 4 Scott Street.

From Blenheim, with love By Bill McElhinney Blankets for a poor family in Romania; a warm jersey and pyjamas for a Ukranian boy and each member of his family; new beanies for children in a Ukranian orphanage. All made with love by a generous group of women in Blenheim. Jean Drake, Ruth Buckley and Valda Henderson are three of around 50 women in Blenheim who knit for Operation Cover Up, a branch of a New Zealand wide missionary group, Mission Without Borders. After the fall of Communism state orphanages in Romania, Ukraine and Moldova were found to be overflowing and many families which had previously relied on state support were left impoverished. Now hundreds of generous Kiwis have joined others from around the world to send warm, knitted woollens to these people in need. Blankets, stoles, hats, scarves and mittens are made, packed in to wool bales, and shipped

overseas, with many NZ companies chipping in to help cover shipping costs. The wool the knitters use is donated, “But we always need more,”says Ruth. Donations can be delivered to Jean’s home, 9 Lybster St in Blenheim. The blankets are knitted in strips and it can take an evening to complete one. Five strips are then sewn together and a border crotched around the edges, which is another evenings work. As well as the satisfaction that comes from helping others in need, there is the added benefit of companionship and the friendships formed as the women work together. Like Joseph’s Technicolour coat, the blankets come in a multitude of colours. You can see a display of the work of the Blenheim knitters this Saturday, July 8, at the Redwoodtown Hall, next to St Christopher’s Church, in Weld St. The display will be open from 10am to 3pm.

Councillor Cynthia Brooks says after the November shake, property managers APL visited all the council flats to check on tenants, but it was decided to get a system in place to make the checks faster and to keep tenants aware of emergency response plans and procedures. Sue says when the November shake happened, the neighbours gathered around her barbeque and had a hot drink for a couple of hours until they felt better and went back to their own units.

Dear Ed Oh dear! Jill Bartlett to my observation missed the point of Don Coyote’s letter which said the pension rise of $13 odd per fortnight for pensioners was worth little. What I read of Don Coyote’s letter was he was saying the $13 government miserably gave to pensioners would be far better spent on areas more deserving than pensioner, such as health and as an example hospices. It is an indictment of the cold-

ings judging by the ‘lights out’ in the sorting room. It is significant NZ Post is a SOE. SOEs run on profit before service. The SOE model invented Roger Douglas of the 4th Labour government is a disaster, particularly with public services. SOE’s should not apply to essential public services. Don Coyote Blenheim

Dear Ed, Reading in the Marlborough Express last week; “Eyes on the ball: Council seeks more information from MSD about emergency housing plans”. How appalling! Many of the people waiting for emergency housing are families, parents with jobs, children already enrolled in schools. All they need is somewhere to feel comfortable and safe until they can find a home.

Since Jill has raised the subject, the $30 odd million John Key’s government wasted on a flag referendum could have gone to hospices. Local chippy becomes regional finalist in the 2017 Best Chip Competition Labour leader Andrew Little meets Doug Barr at the Redwoodtown Rest Home, with Lynette Holt watching on. Doug used to be a meat worker in Invercargill and had met Andrew then when he was his union leader.

Housing and jobs big issues for Little By Cathie Bell Marlborough is a great place, but it can be made better, Labour leader Andrew Little says. He visited Blenheim last week, speaking at a public meeting, a Marlborough Chamber of Commerce breakfast, and to a gathering at the Redwoodtown Rest Home. There are some big challenges though, Andrew says, and the Government has no plan to fix them. Key among those challenges are housing and creating jobs. He says Labour will build more houses,

with its KiwiBuild policy to build 100,000 affordable homes within 10 years. “In 1938, the Labour Government built over 10,000 houses in one year, with a population of nearly 1 million. “When you have the will, when you’re serious about a problem, you get on and fix it. “That’s what the Labour Government did then and what this Labour-led Government this year can do.” It will also work to provide increased funding for mental health services, education, and jobs for young people.

BUILDING your future Designing or renovating a kitchen

A half wall and pass-through window separating the kitchen and living areas is one way to hide food prep and mess, yet still be open and visible.

Your TrusTed LocaL GLass companY

The idea of having an open plan kitchen has been around for many years and continues to be a popular design trend. There are of course, like all remodeling ideas, pros and cons. Take the time to consider the following list of pros and cons to decide what will suit your needs. Open plan Keeps the family in touch by integrating meal prep with nearby activities, such as watching television in the family room. Invites guests into the hub of the home, and facilitates conversation between guests and home cooks. Eliminates walls that reduce natural daylight. Adds a sense of volume, especially in modestly sized homes. Closed plan (Meaning that kitchen access is limited to doorways, and that food prep and clean-up is hidden from view.) Messes are hidden. More walls mean more cabinet

storage, countertop work space, and room for appliances. Guests aren’t inclined to enter the kitchen and disturb the cook. Cooking odours are confined to the kitchen. The dining experience is more formal. If you would like a compromise between the two, you could consider adding a pass-through window which connects the spaces without tearing down the walls of the kitchen. It also closes off the smells and mess. You could also add a raised bar/ eating counter to your island. Face the raised part toward your living areas so it blocks views of food prep areas. Another alternative is to build a half wall between the kitchen and living area. This establishes physical and visual boundaries for your kitchen. Top the wall with a glass partition to reduce noise, yet allow light transmission.

Innovative shower glass technology Sick of looking at streaky glass and having to scrub your shower glass? The Euroglass Timeless Shower is a product that features an extra-clear glass, protected by an innovatitve coating of metal oxides. This means limescale and dirt won’t adhere on the glass and water will run down quickly and condensation evaporates faster. This is great news for home owners, as

they no longer have to put up with unsightly build-up, white haze or hard water marks on their showers. Here are some more benefits from using Euroglass Timeless Showers: - Repels water and condensation - Clearer than standard shower glass - Reduces limescale build-up and corrosion - Quick and easy cleaning - A squeegee simply glides over the glass.

BUILDING your future Bathroom spaces Small bathrooms can be a challenge to remodel, particularly when the homeowner wants to create a functional and storage-friendly space. Here are some ideas to help with remodelling ideas, or simply to help inspire homeowners on how to make the most of a small bathroom space. Add storage Instead of building large cabinets for towels, use open shelving. These can be colourful storage ladders that can be moved around or even wooden crates that can be stacked and fixed to the wall or placed on the ground for accessible storage. Home & Garden Show attracts surge of new exhibitors A host of new exhibitors will be making their debut at the Marlborough Home & Garden Show, providing locals with exciting new opportunities when it comes to home improvement. The must-see event will kick off on Friday 7 July at the Marlborough Lines Stadium 2000, where over 110 industry professionals will gather. For three days, visitors will be treated to previews of what’s new in gardening, kitchens, heating, building and renovating, solar solutions, hot tubs and much more. Event organiser, Josh Shanley, says he’s excited to welcome so many new businesses to the show this year. “There will be a good cross-section of firsttime exhibitors, including those specialising in different building systems and outdoor fireplaces, right through to kitchen renovators, solar experts and window treatments.” IKON Commercial is another new-comer. It will be promoting its quality range of kitchen appliances, all of which will have 15% - 50%

off as a show-only special. Visitors will be able to see these appliances in action, including the new Flow-In, which combines a rangehood and induction hob all in one. IKON is the only New Zealand stockist of the Flow-In, along with coloured stainless steel sinks, which will also be on display at their stand at the front of the Stadium. Visitors can expect many more innovations and impressive specials from other exhibitors too. “We will also have a host of industry professionals discussing high-interest topics over the three days, so visitors will have the chance to quiz them about their next home improvement projects. “Topics will include kitchens, renovation, building, interior design, solar power and choosing colour. We really encourage people to bring along their plans, photos and ideas and to make the most of all the on-site expertise,” Mr. Shanley says.

“There will be a good cross-section of first-time exhibitors, including those specialising in different building systems and outdoor fireplaces, right through to kitchen renovators, solar experts and window treatments.”

Dream Doors Kitchen Renovations will be at the show for the first time, to advise on how to achieve your dream kitchen. They install new kitchens or revamp tired, existing ones.

Sun shines on in Marlborough It might be the middle of winter, but we can’t complain about the weather. Last month was mainly fine and dry with temperatures and sunny days slightly above average, says Rob Agnew, Plant and Food scientist at the Marlborough Research Centre. LOCAL HIRE Rob, who collates the Marlborough weather statistics at the Grovetown Park campus of 90 Nelson St,says Blenheim the Research Centre, the second week of June was slightly warmer than the other LOCAL HIRE weeks, but on the whole the weekly tempera-

tures throughout the month were fairly even. However it doesn’t beat June 2016 when the mean temperature was the sixth warmest recorded. Four of the first six months of 2017 have recorded above average sunshine hours (January, February, May, June). March and April recorded lower than average sunshine, Rob says. Our sunny winter days usually follow frosty nights, and we had our fair share of nippy evenings in June.

There were 10 ground frosts recorded, the coldest being -4.6°C recorded on June 14. The coldest ground frost in June 2016 was -4.4°C recorded on June 4. There were another eight days in June when the ground temperature was between 0 and -1.0; i.e. below zero, but not quite cold enough to be recorded as a ground frost. A ground frost is any temperature less than or equal to -1.0C. Ground frosts are recorded at a height of 2.5cm above a mown grass surface.

Little Footsteps Scott Street kaiako (teacher) Josh McKay with some of the children at the centre, Zac Root, Taimana McKay, Molly Holtrop, Sanreet Kaur and Allie Taylor-Phillips.

Chef to childhood teacher Once a chef and now an early childhood teacher, Josh McKay talks about why he loves his new role with reporter Celeste Alexander.

Local man Josh McKay has worked as a chef overseas, running restaurants and travelling abroad, and yet he says he has settled into a brand-new career which is proving ‘hugely rewarding’. Josh has gone from managing kitchen staff to running around, laughing with the children he teaches at Little Footsteps early learning centre on Scott Street. He says it was out of love for teaching that he decided to purse his Bachelor of Teaching. He also sees his role as a male teacher as being ‘really special’. “I think that it’s really special that the children have a male role model. “I’m still able to incorporate elements of my cooking in with what we do here, like getting into the kitchen with the children and having them involved in making

healthy foods,” he says. Teaching wasn’t something Josh envisioned for his future when growing up, he was firmly set on becoming a chef. The road that has led him to where he is today has taken him abroad and given him many memorable opportunities along the way, he says.

“This was back when the baker made everything from scratch so I was fascinated watching him at work and developed a passion for it myself.” Josh grew up in Golden Bay area near Nelson on a deer farm. “Mum worked in the Golden

Bay Dairy and would sit me with the baker before school while she worked. “While attending Nelson College for Boys I took home economics and later went on to work as a kitchen hand, washing dishes at a couple of restaurants in Nelson.” Josh did his apprenticeship working at Nelson’s Boatshed Cafe then went on to be head chef at Lambrettas Cafe Bar. Heading overseas, Josh managed a London cafe making healthy sandwiches and pasta. His most exciting job while working overseas, he says, was working in an Italian restaurant in a French village, for an English couple. “I ran the whole thing and even had to speak French when ordering and dealing with people. “It was handy that I had studied

French at college and French cookery at NMIT so I had bit to work with,” he laughs. Returning to a New Zealand he took up the position of the cookery tutor at the Marlborough Community College. After some ‘encouragement’ Josh took it a step further and studied for his Bachelor of Teaching, a three year programme at Te Rito Maioha in Nelson. He graduated last year and has been working fulltime for Little Footsteps on Scott Street for a year and a half. “It’s been a huge change but I really love it. It’s a happy job and the children make it fun. “I also enjoy the Maori side of it too... being part of the local Ngati Kuia iwi I’m able to share many of my skills with the children. “It’s an area I want to get into more in the future,” he says.

Will aiming for worlds spot By Cathie Bell Blenheim’s Will MacDonald has packed his bags and is on his way to compete as part of a Junior Black Sox softball team in Queensland this week. The tournament will see the team playing both Australian and New Zealand rivals, with the junior Black Sox team playing the ‘minor sox’ team, the intermediate step between the juniors and the New Zealand men’s Black Sox team. “It’s really tough softball,” Will says. The tournament in Redwoods starts today and runs until the weekend. Now 16, Will has been playing softball since he was six years old. “That Christmas my nan got me a softball glove.

The Sun

“I started going around the backyard with Dad throwing the ball around and got into it.” He is aiming for a spot in the mens’ championships in December and then the next Junior World Championships in Prince Albert, Canada next year. His specialty is pitching, and was clocked at 115kmh earlier this year, but he’s working to get that up to about 130kmh. Will credits Colin Hayes in particular for his pitching coaching, and Kurt Schollum. His father Tony has been his initial coach and is managing a team at the tournament that Will was supposed to be in before being called up for the Junior Black Sox. That team has six Marlborough young men in it. Will MacDonald is representing New Zealand in softball.

Weekend sport cancelled Bad weather caused most weekend sport to be cancelled last weekend, so Glenn Kirby’s football column will not appear this week.

Megan beaten in final Blenheim’s Megan Craig made it to the finals of this year’s national senior squash championships last weekend. The tournament, in Hawkes Bay, was won by Joelle King in the women’s section and Paul Coll in the men’s section. Both were the tournament’s top seeds. King says she knew whoever won the semi-final was going to give her a ‘tough match’.

Gymnastics champs ‘tremendous’ This year’s Marlborough Gymnastic Championships were ‘a tremendous success’, organisers say. Hayden Paddon and Sebastian Marshall secured a hard-fought second place in Rally Poland as Hyundai teammates Thierry Neuville and Nicolas Gilsoul took victory, creating Hyundai Motorsport’s first one-two finish since Germany 2014. After only three events together as a new crew, Paddon and Marshall celebrate their first-ever podium finish. This result is Paddon’s first World Rally Championship podium result since Poland last year where he finished third with Blenheim-based John Kennard as co-driver, and his best result since his win in Argentina in 2016. The result moves Paddon into seventh in the WRC drivers’ championship standings.
