Poultry show this weekend highlight Continued from page 1 Blenheim man Robin Henson has had up to nine different breeds at one time. It all began for Robin when he was given a ‘sitting of eggs’ and it was when a friend encouraged him to enter shows that he got more serious. Over the years Robin has travelled to many shows and won a number of awards including the Championship of New Zealand in 1993 with a white

leghorn. His most recent was at Greymouth in May where he won Reserve Hard Feathered Bantom with a black red bantam he bred himself. This year he is going to the show with seven black red partridges and six light red wheatens. He will also have his grandsons aged nine and three there with brown leghorns and khaki campbell ducks. “It’s all for the enjoyment, especially seeing the kids coming through

with their own entries. “I’ve started a lot of kids up with show birds over the years, and even given one to a local preschool,” he says. The annual and highly popular Marlborough Poultry, Pigeon, Game and Duck Show will be held at the Riding for Disabled Arena on Taylor Pass Road. One special guest will also be coming to serve on the judging

panel, Canterbury man Brian Glassey who starred in the New Zealand documentary Pecking Order. The public is invited to go along and view the poultry, pigeons and ducks and maybe get the chance to meet some of those who have entered. The show will be open to the public on Friday from 1.30pm - 5.30pm and Saturday from 9am - 2.30pm. The cost to enter is $3 per family or $2 per adult and 50 cents per child.

By Bill McElhinney “Bring the America’s Cup to Picton!” That’s the message from 86-yearold Michael Sullivan, grandfather of Olympic medallist and Cup winning crew member Joseph Sullivan. Michael, a resident at the Seaview Home in Picton, was celebrating on Friday with a special afternoon tea for family, friends and other residents. There was champagnes, cupcakes with a nautical theme, and a sea of happy faces as the Team New Zealand victory in Bermuda was recalled with pride. “We made sure Michael got to see the races,” says Seaview manager Donna Kreft. Michael, who was a milkman in Picton for 27 years, also has a sporting background. For years he trained young rowers in Picton, only retiring from coaching in the late 1970’s. Also on hand for Fridays celebration were Joseph’s parents, Mike and Elaine Sullivan. They also want to see the Cup come to the seaside town. “Team New Zealand boss Grant Dalton said they would tour provincial New Zealand,” says Mike. “He promised a heartland tour of New Zealand, where the real people

live. “It doesn’t get any more heartland than here in Picton, with its history of sailing and rowing!” Also at Seaview for the celebration were Miriam Sullivan and Patricia Cornish. Miriam, who owned Picton Foot-

wear for many years, is Michael’s cousin-in-law. Patricia, a cousin, ran the Cornish Store in Main St, Picton, for many years. Joseph, 31, a former Olympic rower, trained for 12 months as a grinder for the Team NZ boat.

He operated the new pedal-powered system on the boat. Pedalling was found to be a way of adding grunt to the power-hungry 50 foot foiling catamaran. Four of the six-man crew pedal to provide power for the controls systems for the wingsails and the foils.

Angel investment boost By Cathie Bell An angel investment group to help businesses struggling to get capital has been set up in Marlborough. Chairman Richard Coon says the group already has 30 members, and is looking to make investments from next month. “We’re pleasantly surprised by the number of opportunities to invest in the Marlborough area. We’ve got 27 items we’re working on.” Angel Investors Marlborough, called AIM for short, is working with Business Trust Marlborough, and its general manager Sue Avery, to attract potential clients for investments from $50,000 to $1 million. From next month, businesses looking for capital can contact Sue, who will help get business plans and other documents ready for the businesses to make a presentation to the five-member AIM board, and then group members will decide whether to invest. Richard says it’s a bit like ‘Dragon’s Den’, but he says they’ll be

more polite and ‘not so mean on the valuations’. “Anyone pitching will get some pretty searching questions, but they will be treated politely, I’ll make sure of that.” The key, he says, is to have members that want to invest and put something back into the community, but it’s also a lot of fun. “Entrepreneurs who’ve successfully built their own businesses get a lot of kicks from helping others to do the same.” Richard moved here last July, and made contact with Business Trust Marlborough, as he has been a business mentor for the past 20 years, first in Auckland and later in Rotorua and Taupo. “At one of the mentor meetings we had, we started talking about future opportunities for Business Trust Marlborough and discussed ideas of having an angel investors’ group here. “There are 20 around the country, so they’re not new, but they are new to Marlborough.” He says it fits well with Business Trust Marlborough’s mentoring role.

Ferries stop sailing Interislander ferries have been cancelled from Wednesday night because of forecast swells of up to 7 metres on Cook Strait, with the last ferry to sail from Wellington leaving at 5pm today, while the last sailing from Picton would leave at 6.45pm. The company expects freight sailings to resume on Friday morning, followed by passenger trips.

Snow storms warning Metservice is predicting snow down to 500 metres in parts of Marlborough today and tomorrow as a cold snap sweeps its way up the country. Forecasters are warning farmers to prepare their livestock and travellers to be careful on the roads, particularly on hill passes.

Richard moves up list Angel Investors Marlborough chairman Richard Coon and Business Trust Marlborough general manager Sue Avery are working together to provide funding up to $1 million for companies.

Blenheim engineer Richard Evans has been selected at number 12 on the ACT party’s list for this September’s general election. Richard was 17 in the party’s list in the 2014 election.

Neighbours help out stranded hotel By Bill McElhinney Spring Creek publican Mike Pink and his wife Hazel have been overwhelmed by the generosity of some Marlburians. Mike and Hazel’s Junction Hotel has suffered a huge downturn in business. The construction of a new roundabout at the intersection has blocked vehicle access to the hotel. Truck drivers, who in the past were regulars at the hotel, have been unable to park and the business has taken a huge hit.

Things are so bad that the hotel is closing early in the evenings and Mike, unable to pay his bills, is considering closing by the end of the month. Mike and Hazel’s plight was featured in the Friday Sun and a as result they were contacted by Jane Grant and Wayne Inkson, owners of Marlborough Ready Mix Ltd, concrete suppliers who also have their business in Spring Creek. Jane and Grant have made a cash donation to the Pinks and one of the other local businesses

affected by the road works. “We know the Pinks, we go to the hotel from time to time for meals,” says Wayne. “They’re our neighbours and we just felt so sorry for them,” says Jane. “We’ve really just made a token gesture. I do hope they can make it through. “The authorities (the New Zealand Tansport Agency) should really come to the party and help these people out. “It’s not their fault that their businesses have been hit.” Mike and Hazel have also been

bowled over by groups of people who, since learning of their plight, have travelled out to the hotel to buy meals and support the business. “We’re just overwhelmed by people’s generosity,” says Mike. However, it’s not all good news for the Pinks. They’ve just discovered plans to erect two large lights on poles on what they say is their land outside the hotel. “The lights weren’t on the original plan we were shown,” says Mike.

The Government is to start pulling up oyster farm cages in the Marlborough Sounds this week. The Ministry for Primary Industries is removing farmed oysters in Southland and Marlborough to control the spread of the Bonamia ostreae pest in an effort to protect the Bluff wild oyster fishery. A ministry spokesman says removal of the last of the caged oysters finished over the weekend in Big Glory Bay and this week moves to phase 3 of operations, which is pulling up ropes. Operations get underway in the Marlborough Sounds this week, with the first of the cages coming up.

One of the driveways at Marlborough Girls’ College has been named to remember Karen Stewart, who finished as principal last week.

3

By Bill McElhinney It was a day of mixed emotions at Marlborough Girls’ College on Friday as pupils and staff gathered to farewell departing principal Karen Stewart. Karen has spent the last 25 years at the College, 12 as principal. The celebrations included a special assembly where students spoke and presented special farewell gifts. The most significant was a large, handcrafted platter made from wood that had been recycled from one of the old MGC buildings. The platter is engraved with the MGC logo and the years that Karen has been at the school. The platter was accompanied by a number of smaller bowls and some cheese knives. Another big surprise for the departing principal was the unveiling of a special street sign , Stewart Drive. It stands at one of the bus bays on the school campus. The whole school gathered to watch as Karen released a farewell balloon on the

school field. Kapa haka students performed a stirring haka as the Pasifika girls draped traditional lolly leis around Karen’s neck. Karen is leaving Marlborough to take up the position of principal at Rangiora High School, where they have been without a permanent principal for more than a year. The board of Marlborough Girls’ College expects to have appointed a new principal for the start of the 2018 school year. In the meantime deputy principal Jo Chamberlain will be acting principal for the remainder of the year and assistant principal Sandy Wyber will take up the role of deputy principal. Karen says she is immensely proud of the MGC young women, their achievements, leadership and service to the community. “They are our future leaders and I believe our future is in good heart,” she says. She was leaving at an exciting time as the vision was being developed for a new school co-located on a greenfield site.

By Bill McElhinney Healthy lifestyles are the focus of a special display to be held at the Tuamarina Hall on Saturday, July 22, from 10am to 4pm. Long time Tuamarina resident Rebecca May O’Sullivan is organising the event. Rebecca bills herself as a clairvoyant/ medium/healer and says the display will feature, among other things, massage, reflexology, wholesome foods crafts and

a number of workshops. “We want to show people how to live better, how to have a more healthy lifestyle, how to deal with the strains and stresses of modern life,” she says. Entry to what is being billed as “Enlighten You” is by koha, says Rebecca. The proceeds from the day will go to the Tua Marina School. For more information you can contact Rebecca on 027 8969 953.

New hall for Awatere By Cathie Bell The Marlborough District Council has sent a concept plan of a refurbished Awatere Community Hall to the community and hopes to tender for its build in February. The 40 year-old hall is considered structurally sound despite the earthquakes, but needs to be brought up to standard to meet all the new building and safety code requirements. The council has budgeted $3 million to it and is proposing to build the hall with a mezzanine floor for a gym. It’s hoped that the next stage, the preparation of working drawings, will be completed by December this year. Once detailed design work was done, the community would have the opportunity to see those designs before building began. Tenders were likely to be called in February-March 2018 with construction underway by April.

Councillor Cynthia Brooks says the project is going to be a real lift for Seddon people at a time when everyone needed some good news. “This project has been talked about since 2006 but the earthquakes had made it essential. “Council made the right call in deciding to renovate and repair the hall and it’s a great relief to know that people are happy with the design that’s been proposed.” Councillor Gerald Hope says the hall working group has had to work out the needs, the aspirations and the budget, remembering that a range of community wishes had to be taken into account. ”What we have now is a plan that will provide suitable spaces for a range of activities rather than just a sports amenity – it will be possible to partition areas for activities like music and drama lessons as well as providing room for the community events which draw in a big crowd. “We hope it will meet everyone’s needs.”

Dr Tom Mulholland will be in Marlborough next week.

Dr Tom to talk farming strong By Cathie Bell Farming families under pressure from earthquake and weather stresses are being offered a meal and time out to listen to tips on how healthy thinking can help them live well and farm well. Farmstrong and the Rural Support Trust are holding two free events next Wednesday with medical doctor and author Dr Tom Mullholland. Dr Tom will share his simple and practical ‘healthy thinking’ tips on how to manage the ups and downs that come with daily farming life. Marlborough Rural Support Trust coordinator Chris Faulls says the earthquake event has really affected local farmers, adding to the existing stress of floods, winds and market conditions. “This stretches the coping abilities within families as a result.” Chris has spent the past seven months coordinating the rural recovery for Ministry of Primary Industries and the Rural Support Trust. He’s noticed both the fragility and resilience of rural businesses during that time.

“Our goal is to help farmers move forward, knowing they are supported and how they can access relief packages,” Chris says. “The support from central and local Government, NGO’s and farming support organisations has been significant, but we know it’s difficult to reach everyone and get past the stoic self-reliance that’s prevalent in the farming community.” Farmstrong launched in June 2015, and has since travelled throughout New Zealand sharing tools and resources, and supporting events promoting rural wellbeing. “We began because many farmers told us they were good at looking after their equipment, land and stock, but like other New Zelanders, they can neglect their own wellbeing,” Farmstrong spokesperson Gerard Vaughan says. “We feel privileged to be invited to Marlborough to share Dr Tom’s Healthy Thinking tools with people in this area.” Farmstrong are hosting a breakfast at the Scenic Hotel in Blenheim on Wednesday next week at 7.30am, and a pizza dinner at the Ward Community Hall that evening from 5.30pm.

There have been quite a few crashes here in the past so it will be better when it’s done. At least it has slowed traffic in the meantime.

The whole thing has taken far too long - seven months! It’s been a huge inconvenience.

I ride my pushbike in and out so I really have to watch the traffic. It will be good when it’s finished.

The sooner it all goes away the better. It’s killed local trade, the whole thing has been hopeless.

It’s ridiculous, it’s having a negative effect on everything out here. Marlborough Roads are not helpful.

Spring Creek fiasco

Letters to the editor

Dear Ed, The blase attitude of the NZ Transport Agency towards the business’s affected by the Spring Creek roundabout fiasco is to be condemned. The local Marlborough manager seems to think that these people are not important, when it comes to doing a major work at the intersection. Being on a main highway and a major junction, this work should have been given a priority, and proceeded at a 24 hour-pace, to minimise the disruption. The lack of response from the MP Stuart Smith, and the head office of the Transport Agency shows what they think of the local people. Compensation is due to these businesses as they are just as affected as the Kaikoura business’s were by the earthquake. And this disruption is man made through poor planning. It’s a shocking state of affairs and should never have been allowed to take place. R Howe Bothams Bend

Letters on issues of community interest are welcomed. Guidelines are that they should be no longer than 150 words. Decorated garden Dear Ed, It brightened my day when I saw these lovely painted stones that some good person has placed among the plantings on the corner of Redwood and Stephenson streets. On the subject of gardens, have you noticed the one at Marlborough Lines substation on Nelson Street? It’s the best garden of its type I’ve seen, colourful through every season and even has a water feature. Other gardens that delight: Couplands, especially when the yellow roses are in bloom, and the wildflower gardens along the Taylor River near Henry Street that

gave their all to the bees and the birds and the passersby for months on end and which will regenerate, I hope, in the spring. The council’s planters in town are great too. Now all we need are hanging baskets or small planter boxes of flowers to brighten the CBD which can look drab and cheerless on grey days. And evergreen trees rather than deciduous in town to add colour and reduce windblown leaves. Looking good Blenheim. Anti-litter Linda Blenheim

Accident thanks Dear Ed, May I through your community column express my utmost thanks to the emergency services of Linkwater, Havelock, Picton and a member of the Keneperu fire service, who all attended an accident I had on Thursday 29 June on Queen Charlotte Drive, and to the passers by who stopped to offer their help. I was very humbled by their care and kindness. I have been trying to track the mystery per-

son who was first on the scene and checked that I was okay before turning off my motor and helping me out of the vehicle but then left when he was assured that I was being cared for by another very special person on her way home. Still more on fluoride

Fluoride debate

Dear Ed, When talking about fluoridation of our water, it is important to know the difference between ‘natural’ calcium fluoride, as found in Danish water, which is good because the calcium present stops it getting into your blood stream - and ‘industrial’ sodium fluoride which is bad because it has no calcium present. In many countries, fluoridation is banned, Israel officially stopped adding fluoride to its water supplies in 2014 finding that only some one per cent of the water is used for drinking, and

Dear Ed, Re “Gnasher’s” letter of the 28/6. While anyone in a position of vested influence should remain out of the debate, nevertheless anyone can put forward an opinion, so long as they state their position. As to the hot topic of adding fluoride to our drinking water I totally fail to see how it can do any good if those in need of it are drinking only sugared sweetened drinks and eating lollies. Surely everyone can see this fact. I lived in Australia when it was first added there, over 30 years ago, and the resulting drop in

less than one per cent of Japan practices water fluoridation No country adds fluoride to its bottled water! Surely this would be the preferred option as it allows the user the freedom to choose their poison! Luckily, we can still buy nonfluoridated bottled water, which is what most people drink, indicating that the fluoridation of public water supplies is a waste of money! Tony Baker Hawkesbury

More on fluoride Dear Ed, I applaud Judy Crowe 100 per cent, as an NMDHB. Member having the integrity to stand behind her convictions opposing the community water fluoridation poisoning our water supply. Thank you Judy for having the courage to stand against your as yet, under-informed colleagues. You have obviously done your ‘homework’, as have I over many, many months. I find it very reassuring to know that you genuinely care about my well-being and that of my community. It is of great concern to have it stated by those wanting to force this poison upon us, e.g. Hon Peter Dunne will be ‘guided by science ’on making their decision. Science, no matter how well intended, does make many mistakes! We need to see the data thoroughly checked out and proved ‘beyond all reasonable doubt’ before the damage is done. Dr John Colquhoun, a former principal dental officer in Auckland, was previously an

avid supporter and promoter of fluoridation in New Zealand until on examining the research data discovered many, many flaws, eventually leading him to the truth. Being an honourable man of great integrity he stood up and stated now he had the true evidence, re the use of sodiumfluoride, he vehemently opposed its use. See his video interview “A Dentist who discovered the Truth” on www.fluoridefree.org.nz I venture to boldly challenge for anyone wanting to make a truly informed decision on this topic this has to be compulsory viewing. A glaringly obvious statement I note in the propaganda of those in the ‘pro-camp’ neglects stating naturally produced calcium fluoride and SODIUM FLUORIDE are not the same, so naturally have quite different consequences. Perhaps a deliberate cunning use of misinformation to sway the gullible? Judi Woolley Blenheim

The other side Dear Ed, I am a landlord, many people on this ‘social housing list’ do not deserve to live in any house. There are many rules for landlords, that we need to provide a house of reasonable quality. Many of these people have

taken advantage, stealing and damaging properties. Not paying rent etc. If we provide you with a house, dont wreck it and steal from us. Irate Landlord Blenheim

Petrol collusion Dear Ed, Well, well, well the story of the three oil wells — relative to the findings by Judith Collins of excessively high fuel prices. On a trip north, prices at Levin, Bulls, etc, were 25 cents lower than Blenheim and for that matter Wellington. Apart from collusion between oil companies, it seems collusion between petrol stations within regions is a strong likelihood. When will the politicians

stop their naive belief in the free market and much vaunted competition? Humans are greedy, especially corporate oil companies and any business. Free market results in cabals and collusion. Fuel needs price controls, because fuel leads to inflation across the business sector. Who pays in the end? The consumer public. Don Coyote Blenheim

child cavities was remarkable. The only concern being that the intake of fluoride was three times too high as the children were drinking an excess amount of water, which led to dental and skeletal fluorosis. But 30 years on Australian children’s dental cavaties are just as bad again as sugary drinks have replaced tap and bottled water! As for the older generation we get sufficient fluoride from drinking tea and wine. So why don’t we leave it that way? Chris Picton

“That’s one thing we do need more of,” says Christine, “more warm men’s clothing.” “The vineyard workers especially like hoodies and branded sweatshirts.” Blokes, of course, tend to hang on to their clothes, so the ladies at St Vinnies would be really grateful if Blenheim women could persuade their men to clean out their wardrobes and pass on those items they haven’t worn for years, or the ones that just don’t fit any more! Dress-ups also draw in customers, people looking for that special something for a themed party or a retro look. The Blenheim branch of St Vincent de Paul own its own building, so its overheads are low. Which means more money available for charity work, most of which goes on behind the scenes. “We have helped kids in low decile schools with things like

shoes and trackpants and even money for sports subs,” Christine says. Money is also given to assist with emergencies such as a funeral or a medical mishap, unexpected expenses that can be a burden for those on a limited income. The society was able to send $10,000 to help families affected by the November Kaikoura earthquakes. “The shop is a fun place to work,” says Christine. She has two volunteer helpers in the mornings, two in the afternoons, and another three or four sorting items out the back. The society also has a shop in Picton. The shop gets good community support, says Christine. “People give us mostly good quality items. And because we’re in the centre of town we don’t get people dumping stuff on us.”

Hobnail Boots kick it in town “It’s very warm and intimate, and the audiences are always great. “There’s great food to be had in town, and we’re very fond of our wine in Hobnail, so we don’t just like Blenheim, we love it.” He says that after 23 years together on a long and winding road which has seen the band play venues around the world and throughout New Zealand, ‘Blue Sky Songs’ is a fine distillation of life’s lessons, well learned.

Heart disease, a big killer By Bill McElhinney The Heart Foundation is calling on Kiwis to put aside their concerns about ‘wasting time’ and dial 111 immediately if they suspect they or another person is having a heart attack. Recent Heart Foundation research found concern about ‘wasting other people’s time’ was listed by more than half the respondents as the number one reason to delay calling 111. Heart Foundation Medical Director Gerry Devlin is also concerned that more than 40 per cent of those surveyed would not immediately call 111 if they thought they were experiencing symptoms. July is the Foundation’s Heart Attack Awareness month and Gerry is imploring Kiwis to stop putting themselves at increased risk of death or permanent heart damage by delaying that important call.

Hobnail Boots from left, Caroline Easther, Rob Joass, Jo Moir, and Hamish Graham are playing in Blenheim tomorrow.

“It’s not always the dramatic chest-crushing pain that people imagine it to be.” “When a heart attack happens, life-threatening rhythm problems are common. “So early access to a defibrillator, carried by ambulances, is really important to save lives. “This is why we recommend calling 111 immediately,” says Gerry. “Also, the earlier a blocked artery is opened up, the less long-term damage there is to the heart muscle. Speed is critical.” Gerry says it’s vital that all Kiwis are aware of the symptoms of a heart attack and act with urgency. It’s okay to call for an ambulance, even if it turns out not to be a heart attack. “Let the medical professionals determine whether the patient is having a potentially life-threatening event.” Symptoms of a heart attack can include: chest discomfort lasting 10 minutes or more; pain that spreads to the jaw, shoulders or

SIR PETER BLAKE TRUST YOUNG LEADER AWARDS

Acknowledging great young leaders in Marlborough Sir Peter Blake believed in the incredible potential of young kiwis to achieve great things. He knew that inspiring leaders of any age could be found in every corner of New Zealand. Sir Peter showed all of us there are leaders

Waikawa Bay School Amelia Drury “Amelia has developed into a fine young leader, she always encourages other students to go the extra mile to provide for the greater good of our school. “Amelia encourages others to be better tomorrow than they were today and helps them to focus on what matters most in life. “She is developing the ability to communicate, understand and assist other students and she is developing a willingness to take risks and be courageous.”

and there are dreamers. Leaders make things happen. Dreamers have a vision. The truly special people do both. In that spirit, and in partnership with Westpac, the Young Leader Awards celebrate young people whose outstanding leadership

Riverlands School Maggie Dodson “Maggie has shown great leadership potential as a Year 6 student. “Over the last three years, Maggie has been a leader of our school Kapa Haka group, she takes part in our school road patrol team, she is a school librarian, a member of the school environment team and shows an overall ability and competence to be an effective leader within not only our school, but the wider community.”

uplifts their school community. Each year, the Trust offers one award to a Year 5 – 8 student in every NZ Primary and Intermediate school during Leadership Week. Congratulations to Marlborough’s Young Leader Award recipients.

Bohally Intermediate Lauren Popham “Lauren is a very giving leader, she does a lot for others. She is a class leader and volunteers for many jobs such as cellphone collection, office work etc. “Lauren also organised and hosted a bake sale to raise money for the SPCA, just to help out. “She’s always willing to help and give, and a great role model.”

Queen Charlotte College Emma Nicholson “Emma is an all-round positive role model who demonstrates a work ethic that belies her age. She is determined to succeed and is willing to put in the needed effort to maximise her learning and experience. “The adage ‘attitude, not aptitude determines altitude’ is apt when it comes to Emma’s go-to desire to always achieve her

Ward Schoool Ashlee Hickman “Ashlee was nominated because she has demonstrated her growing leadership potential and skills in many areas. Ashlee is a caring and responsive House Captain and is very supportive and goes out of her way to support students who need a little extra help. “This term, Ashlee has started a dance programme for the younger girls in the school. She holds these lessons once a week at lunch times. Her most recent project was as part of a team planning a sensory project, preparing a proposal for the Board of Trustees. She has been responsible for designing a timeline and has already started approaching sponsors. “A very pleasing element of Ashlee’s growth as a leader has been her willingness to see opportunities and apply learning from previous projects to new ones independently. “She actively seeks support and guidance, responding positively to suggestions and feedback. Ashlee exemplifies the character and values of Ward School.”

Witherlea School Grace Straker “Grace is an exceptional student in all areas. She has worked her way up throughout the school to become head of our school council, she participates in all extra curricular activities and academically she is a high achiever due to her exceptional work ethic and self motivation. “She is always the first to put up her hand and offer to help other students who need extra support. “Grace has also been an active ‘Young Leader’ in our school. “What makes Grace extra special is that she never expects any thanks or commendation for what she does. “She is a true leader - humble, caring, respectful and a great listener.”

SIR PETER BLAKE TRUST YOUNG LEADER AWARDS

Acknowledging great young leaders in Marlborough

Havelock School Aroha Ward “This young wahine has, right through her primary years, been a quiet leader without needing to be. Aroha is able to work alongside peers, younger students and adults alike, relationships being relaxed and productive. “Although slight in stature, there lies within Aroha a strength of character and strong work ethic which is applied doing good things in her school, home and community. “Being thoughtful and considerate of others and willing to take on extra duties doing them well, makes her an exemplary role model.”

Linkwater School Scarlett Venrooy “Scarlett is a great role model for all of our school values of empathy, honesty, perseverance, positivity, respect, responsibility and service. “She is highly regarded by all members of our school and we all love the way she cares for others and leads in a quiet way. She has a great honesty and can remind others in the nicest possible way if they need to reflect on a particular behaviour.”

Renwick School Brody Cattermole “Brody is the epitome of a young leader. He strives hard in everything he does, willingly accepting challenges both in school and in the wider community. He engages in meaningful relationships with his peers and adults, while showing utmost respect and maturity as a Year 8 student. “He willingly shares his knowledge, experience and skills to help others and this naturally enables him to be a successful role model and leader of others in the school. He makes Renwick School a better place to be.”

Redwoodtown School Charlotte Brown “Charlotte is actively involved in our school community. As a leader in our school she champions our school values of positive relationships, respect, integrity, resilience and innovation. “She is a member of our Year 8 leadership team, was selected for our leadership tramp, is a school librarian and extremely active in many sports both inside and outside of school. “Charlotte never gives up and is always looking for the next opportunity to learn.”

Corey Broughton Ltd ‘Bor n a nd bred’ i n Ble n h ei m , C o r ey Broughton has worked in the jewellery industry since he was 18. He trained under Noel Herd and for years did a lot of work for some of the country’s largest jewellery companies. Wanting to set out on his own, Corey established his own business from home 15 years ago and has since been busy creating stunning jewellery for clients here and overseas. What makes Corey’s work unique is that he uses 3D technology in the design process which not only saves time and money, but gives the client a very close indication of what the finished product will look and feel like. “It’s a real point of difference for us using this technology and it helps to keep the cost down as well,” he says. Working alongside Corey is jeweller Karen Dick who specialises in stone setting. Together they redesign and re-work rings and pendants, as well as helping clients to design their perfect piece of jewellery. “You dream it, we can design and create it. There’s nothing we won’t try,” he says.

Workers gain confidence as well as improvements in their skills in both the workplace and at home and the companies involved say these improvements gain the benefit of a more confident employee, who is more likely to seek promotion and advancement within the workplace. A graduation ceremony was held at Omega Seafood on Friday for employees Paora Starkey, Cairo Ngawhare, and Davy Falcon-Jones. Omega Seafood factory manager Vincent Redwood praised the three

valued employees and praised their commitment to the programme and performance at work. “This is a win-win for us as an employer and for you as individuals.” Omega Seafood owner Chris Redwood recommends the programme to other businesses particularly those in the seafood industry. The two-hour classes, just once a week at Ngati Apa kit e Ra To’s offices, have made an amazing difference for participants as they learn in a very different environment, in a way that is relevant to their own specific workplace. Receptionist Debra Kiesling says she will miss seeing their eagerness to attend the program and their smiling faces, which has seen the programme as community engagement for the benefit of everyone. “We have seen them grow in confidence and their exuberance was always well received as they attended their Lynne Owen from Workforce Development Ltd, Butch Bradley from Ngati Apa, and Omega Seafood’s Cairo Ngawhare, Paora Starkey, and Davy Falcon-Jones, after graduation. weekly classes.”

The Pelorus Area Health Trust is growing its services to advise and support Hospice Outreach Marlborough Sounds and Farewell Trust Services. The trust is celebrating 10 years of supporting primary healthcare for 3500 people in the wider Sounds, and recently celebrated its 25-strong volunteer team with a morning tea. Nearly half the community live more than 30 minutes from Havelock and over an hour from Blenheim, and it is not uncommon for people to have to travel up to three hours to the nearest facility at the Havelock Medical Centre. The Pelorus Area Health Trust meets annually with the Havelock Medical Centre, and is spreading its support to Hospice Outreach and Farewell Trust Services as they combine to support the terminally ill or the dying in their own home. It also runs a Havelock charity shop. Some of the Pelorus Area Health Trust volunteers.

Your guide to HOME MORTGAGES Right advice

The smart living area in an EcoTech Home.

Getting a mortgage is one of the most important financial decisions you will make in your lifetime. It is possible that the best product is not at your current bank. That’s why you need advice from a qualified mortgage broker who has access to a wide range of mortgage deals, including some mortgage loans which are not generally available to the public directly. If you already have a mortgage then a broker may be able to help you reduce the amount you have to pay. With in excess of 20 years experience within both the finance and property industries, Shane Hendrikz of Loan Market knows how to get your loan approved. Shane operates in the Blenheim and surrounding areas. While you concentrate on viewing the properties, he will work on the paperwork to get you into the property you dream about areas with very high wind and snow loading. “I specialise in first-time home buyers as Manufactured from steel using precision well as the restructuring of existing mortgage measurement and cutting tools, the modules finance.” have been tested to withstand earthquakes measuring up to 9.7 on the Richter scale. From order to onsite takes around four months. While the modules are being made, the site can be prepared. The modules come plumbed and wired, with the kitchen and bathrooms installed. For most of us, it’s a case of going out Special insulation means that the buildings and looking at lots of different properties are energy efficient. The modular home has the same guarantees before finding the right home. It pays to be just as careful when choosing as one built on site using traditional methods. Plans are available of one, two, three, four, a home loan. Shop around for the best mortgage five and six bedroom designs. Affordable modular homes A Kiwi firm is finding a market for prefabricated houses built in China to exacting specifications and shipped here. “We make cars, computers and so many other things in factories, so why not houses?” EcoTech Homes founder Tony Frost says. In 2005 Tony considered there had to be a more cost effective way to build affordable, high-spec houses and originally considered modifying containers, but there was an insufficient market in New Zealand to justify establishing a factory here. And containers were unsuitable for what he had in mind. He began visiting China to find a manufacturing facility that would suit the New Zealand market and meet the requirements of the New Zealand Building Code. Tony invested in quality-based manufacture and materials to achieve certification by the Ministry of Building and Works Government. Ecotech Homes is the only New Zealand company importing prebuilt modular houses that has achieved Multi-proof Certification for its homes to be located anywhere in New Zealand, including earthquake zones and

School kart champs on By Cathie Bell The Supreme Kart Supplies national school championships are on this weekend, with the next generation of motorsport legends on display racing over five classes vying for the coveted national title. The racing starts on Saturday at 10am, at the Cresswell Electrical Raceway, on Wither Road. Kartsport Marlborough spokesman Neil Butts says entry is free, and the event is co-hosted with the karting club and Marlborough Boys’ College. He says the youngest racers will contest the Cadet ROK class, and both current New Zealand number one

Learn the art of pool playing Friday and played her way in to the semi-final of that evenings tournament. “There’s no charge,” says Mike, “and you don’t even have to be a Clubs member. “Anyone who wants to can come along.” The Club also provides a $50 bar tab as a prize for the tournament winner each Friday. The Friday tournament has been running for five weeks. Initially it attracted eight people, but last week attracted 16, the maximum number they can cope with on an evening. The most played game is eight ball. The goal of eight ball, which is played with a full rack of 15 balls and a cue ball, is to claim a suit, stripes or solid, odd or even numbered balls, pocket all of them, and then pocket the black eight ball while denying your opponent opportunities to do the same with their numbered balls. The Club tournament plays to world rules, which means you have to nominate the ball you intend to pocket, says Mike. “It raises the skill level,” he says. “You can’t get by with just a fluke shot.”

Former Marlburian and world record holding single sculler Robbie Manson was in a class of his own leaving a strong field including double Olympic medallist and four-time world champion Ondrej Synek in his wake as he won by two boat lengths at the latest world cup rowing event in Switzerland. “It was hard work, I didn’t feel very good off the start but I just tried to focus on the process and do what I know works for me,” he says. New Zealand has won six gold medals and a silver at the event.

Louis Sharp and North Island champ Kiahn Burt will both be hard to beat. “The Vortex Mini ROK class has a full field of 26 evenly matched karters with Jacob Douglas trying to add the schools’ title to his New Zealand number one title. “The Rotax Max Juniors will see local hope William Exton competing in a very high-class field, with some of these karters also doubling up to race in the Junior Yamaha section. Ryan Wood from Wellington will be tough to beat in both fields. “Rounding out the racing are the Rotax light seniors where Jacob Cranston heads William Exton is carrying local hopes. the driver list.”

By Bill McElhinney Like to play pool but unsure of the skill involved? Mike Van Loon can help you out. Mike and several of his colleagues are available at the Clubs of Marlborough pool room on Friday nights, where they run a special tournament. The tournament is open to any beginner and the top Division One players are excluded, so you won’t be competing against the guns. Mike and his mates will teach you the rules of the game, some tactics, and if you are already a pool player, they may be even able to help you improve your game. Mike’s had plenty of practise. He started playing as a youngster and at one stage was ranked 48th in New Zealand. “No problem if you’ve never played before,” says Mike. “We’ll give you a pool cue and show you how to play.” He cites a recent instance of a newbie who, on her first night, could barely hold the cue properly. After several coaching sessions and a few games, she came back the following

Football knockout cup finals this weekend

Redwood Masters player Mark Wybourne is tackled from behind by Picton’s Regan Russell.

The 2017 Knockout Cup final will be played Saturday at A&P Park between favourites Central Pirates and Blenheim Valley United. Pirates easily navigated their finals berth by beating Rangers City 4-0 with Bryce Smith capping off a good game with two goals while Sam Pearson and Liam Sluiter grabbed one each. It was a walk in the park for Blenheim Valley United who comprehensively beat Trojans, a second division side. James Mailaman and Alick Damelip both scored a brace while Shuzo Ohira hit the net four times to win 9-0. In the knockout shield semi-finals Rangers Masters almost delivered the weekend’s upset however, Blenheim Valley Masters fought back to end the game in a two all draw. After extra time with honours still even, it went to penalties and Rangers must be disappointed not to convert their chances as Blenheim Valley go on to face Clubs of

Marlborough Rangers in the final. Clubs went behind early in the encounter as Trojans Spartans had youth and speed on their side, but in extra time Clubs of Marlborough scored to save themselves from facing penalties, wining 3-2. The Knockout Bowl final will see BV Woodbourne play Central while Picton Crow Tavern Masters and BV Cobras will decide who takes out the Knockout Plate.
