Stamp to win

By Bill McElhinney Havelock – gateway to the Pelorus and Kenepuru Sounds, greenshell mussel capital – and a great place to visit over the next few months. Havelock Vision 2020 is a charitable trust that has been set up to support Havelock community projects and local businesses. While Havelock is often busy with boaties and visitors to the Sounds over summer, winter can be a bit quiet. So the trust has come up with the Havelock Passport Winter Promotion. How to reach us

Stamp for a chance to win Continued from page 1 Twenty Havelock businesses have joined forces to produce packs of loyalty cards. Customers who come to Havelock over the next few months and make a purchase at one of the businesses will get their loyalty card stamped. Twelve stamps from any of the participating businesses will get the card holders in to the draw for a host of prizes. “It’s a way of raising interest in our lovely little town at a quieter time of the year,” says Vision 2020 office manager Janet Brownson. The trust has been encouraged by the support

Les Whiteside

from the Havelock business community. “There are some great prizes on offer,” says Janet. The promotion starts on July 22 and cards need to be in by October 31. The draw will take place after this. If you take a trip to Havelock, check out the memorial walls in the township which commemorate the internationally famous scientists Ernest Rutherford and William Pickering, who both went to school in Havelock. Rutherford, most famous for splitting the atom, made a number of other major scientific break

throughs during his distinguished career. Pickering worked at NASA in the United States and with his team was responsible for organising a number of important unmanned space flights.

TWICE WEEKLY

By Bill McElhinney What noise annoys an oyster? That was the question posed by a popular 1930s song. The answer, according to some, was a noisy noise annoys an oyster most, which went on to become a popular tongue twister. But who knew that underwater noise was of increasing concern in marine environments? According to the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research, or NIWA, human activities such as commercial shipping, recreational boating and seismic surveying can adversely affect marine life. Most people have heard about whale song and dolphin click and whistles, but less well known is how many fish species, such as red gurnard, communicate using sound. As part of a survey of underwater noise in Cook Strait, NIWA installed a passive acoustic device on the seabed midway between Tory Channel and Blumine Island. Between July 20 and December 15 last year, it recorded underwater noise and as NIWA staff expected,

found Queen Charlotte Sound to be a noisy place, with vessel traffic recorded 12 hours a day on average. Noise levels increased significantly over Christmas and January. The Marlborough District Council, which had joined with Land Information New Zealand to map the seafloor in the Sound, obtained a grant for the analysis and reporting of the NIWA data, a summary of which will be presented to the council environment committee tomorrow. The NIWA recorder detected dolphin species in the area and recorded fish choruses daily around dusk, along with visual sightings by NIWA staff. NIWA says the report provides an insight into how human activities manifest the underwater soundscape of the Totarunui/ Queen Charlotte Sound, and it is reassuring to find that the marine mammals in the area appear to be able to coexist with the existing noise levels. The report also notes the marine mammals are not leaving the area because of nearby seismic testing, Mark Matthews puts a sound velocity probe into the water to calibrate the sonar despite fears about this. survey.

PHO board back up to strength By Cathie Bell Tonight’s Marlborough Primary Health Organisation meeting will see four new board members appointed to replace those who resigned suddenly three months ago. Chairman Alistair Sowman confirmed new members Ruth Hamilton, Louise McKenzie, Greg King, and Deon Claassens have been appointed. Three of the new members will attend the PHO’s board meeting at 6pm tonight in the health hub in Queen Street, Blenheim. The other board members are Tarina MacDonald and Helen Neame. Alistair says the new members were found after the PHO advertised, ‘they’re quite a diverse range of people’. There were nine applicants, he says, with applicants short-listed and interviewed before the appointments.

“It’s nice to be up to full quota. “We followed the process and it will be nice to move on.” The PHO had legal advice that the board can continue to operate, but on restricted terms, and could not make any decisions that affect the organisation’s property, assets, or the operation of the trust ‘in a material way’. The Sun understands some of the original board members resigned after unhappiness with the expansion of the health hub, where the Nelson Marlborough District Health Board proposed moving district nurses there from a purpose-built facility at Wairau Hospital. The move caused controversy, leading the DHB to review district nursing, and a report on that is expected to be considered at next week’s DHB meeting. Alistair says it is ‘disappointing’ the PHO has been caught up in the dispute about where district nurses

Smart recycling Picton has been chosen to trial a smart technology recycling bin this summer. The bins use wifi and sensors to tell when they are full and need to be emptied so that collection runs can be made. Picton is one of five sites around New Zealand chosen by ‘Litter less recycle more’, and the trial will run for two years, starting later this year before summer.

Killed on holiday Blenheim woman Gayleen McEwan was killed on Sunday while on holiday in the Caribbean watching planes take off at a beach. The 57 year-old was on holiday with her husband Phill and two Kiwi friends when she was knocked over by the blast of a Boeing 737 and fatally injured.

Survey offers rubbish fixes By Cathie Bell A survey of people’s views on rubbish and recycling collection shows that most people are comfortable with the current system, council solid waste manager Alec McNeil says. He says he hopes the information provided will help the council to identify and fix the limitations in the current system, rather than move to a new system which will be more expensive. A move to wheelie bins will be ‘a not insignificant investment’, Alec says, potentially increasing rates by $45 a year. Most people who took part in a survey on rubbish and recycling

collection are willing to consider changing to wheelie bins, he says, but that was dependent on ‘a number of factors and ultimately cost’. There are two charges for rubbish through rates, a targeted rate for those households that get kerbside collection, and a uniform annual charge for all ratepayers that recovers the costs associated with processing material at the resource recovery centre. A switch to wheelie bins could increase charges by $45 a year to those with kerbside collection and $27 a year to everyone else. “The next level of change is a step up in levels of service and it’s Solid Waste manager Alec McNeil not an inexpensive exercise.”

Alec says the survey shows people didn’t have major problems with the existing service and there is a need to share information so people having problems, say with animals damaging rubbish bags, can learn from those who knew how to do it so animals didn’t cause damage. “If we can fix them without a whole lot of change, that would be fantastic.” A wheelie bin is not going to fix all the problems people have with the existing service, he says, and there is a big cost involved. “Imagine if we switched to wheelie bins to solve the litter problem, and it got worse?”

By Bill McElhinney There are only two things that can slow down the intrepid Havelock posties – dogs and the sometimes-raging Pelorus River. Rural Mail driver Mike Cullimore once drove through floodwater almost up to the door handles on his vehicle. “I shouldn’t have,” Mike says, “but I just put her in four-wheel-drive and pushed through!” Mike and his wife Carol have been delivering the mail in Havelock township and around the RD area since 2006, but late last year they decided it was time for a break, and in March the business was bought by their relief driver, Kath Kane. Kath now runs Havelock Postal Services Ltd and has Mike and Carol as her relief drivers two days a week. When the Sun caught up with them last Friday, all three were flat out dealing with a backlog of mail as the result of weather related road closures. The mail comes in from Nelson around 8am every day and is sorted for town and rural delivery. A bag or two gets taken down to the Havelock wharf to go on the Sounds mail boat and then it’s on to the quad bike for the town run.

A van and a jeep then take the rest to the outlying areas: north to Kaiuma and up the Wakamarina and south to just a few kilometres short of the Wairau River, shooting up the many side roads on the way and clocking up 150km a day. “We deliver into people’s mailboxes,” says Mike. “Sometimes, if we know someone isn’t well, we’ll even take it to their front door.” Flooding in the Pelorus and Wakamarina Rivers can be a problem, posties have had a few anxious moments navigating floodwaters swirling across the road. Kath has been a relief driver for Mike and Carol for 10 years, so knows her way around. Fewer letters are posted these days, but there are always thousands of circulars to deliver ‘especially around times like Easter, Mother’s Day, Christmas,’Mike says. “They really rock in.” There has also been a big increase in parcels. People are buying more and more on-line, the posties say. There is brisk traffic from Trade Me buyers and sellers, and they have noticed an upsurge in people buying directly from China.

By Bill McElhinney Members of Blenheim Nativity Anglican church were delighted to welcome back their former vicar, Richard Ellena, and his wife Hilary, at the weekend. Richard left Nativity in 2007 to be ordained as the 10th Bishop of Nelson. He and Hilary were back in Blenheim for the re-dedication of the St Barnabas Chapel, commonly known as Barnies, which sits next to the Nativity Church in Alfred St. Barnies had been used as a youth centre for some years, and after an interior upgrade the chapel is now used for mid-week communion services, weddings, funerals and reflective prayer events. It is also a place for the youth. Bishop Richard had been invited to rededicate the chapel at a special service held

on Sunday afternoon and attended by a number of parishioners. The chapel, which had been sited at Springlands, was moved from there to its present site 21 years ago. “I remember the move,” says Bishop Richard. “It was done in the middle of the night so as not to disrupt traffic. “The chapel was taken down High St on a large truck and staff from Marlborough Lines came to remove power lines and put them back after the truck went through. “Barnies finally arrived on its new site at 2am.” Prominent architect Sir Michael Fowler, who lived in Blenheim at the time, helped with the refurbishment of the chapel and the design of the entranceway.

Motorised mail coming here By Cathie Bell NZ Post is asking to use motorised carts for its posties. Councillors will decide at tomorrow’s Marlborough District Council assets and services committee meeting whether to allow posties to use electric vehicles called Paxters to deliver letters and parcels on footpaths in urban parts of Marlborough. The report to councillors says the Paxter has been trialled in New Plymouth, Ashburton, Oamaru, Invercargill, and parts of Auckland for the past 19 months, and has been given an exemption to use footpaths by the New Zealand Transport Authority, as long as councils give approval. Blenheim NZ Post manager Grant Sinclair referred the Sun to head office for comment.

Local company leads world in pest eradication By Cathie Bell Rapaura-based scientist Elizabeth Bell was opening keynote speaker for a world conference on getting rid of invasive pests off animals, highlighting the work local company Wildlife Management International does around the world. Blenheim-based Wildlife Management International works on eradicating pest animals while protecting rare and endangered species, both in New Zealand and internationally. A local project it has is protecting black-fronted terns which breed on the Clarence River, and it has projects in Britain and the Caribbean underway now. The Island Invasives conference, in Dundee in Scotland last week, was opened by Princess Anne who seemed to enjoy Elizabeth’s speech, she says.

“She laughed at my jokes and closely watched the pictures of the British islands that I was talking about – Ramsey Island (Wales), Lundy Island (England), Isle of Canna (Scotland), St Agnes & Gugh (Isles of Scilly, England) and the Shiant Isles (Scotland). “She was very pleased to hear that I thought the UK was leading the way in regards to communityled eradications and that the model that WMIL and various British agencies have developed there is now being taken to the world.” Elizabeth says it was ‘a huge honour’ to do the opening keynote address. She says it was well-received and generated lots of in-depth discussions with other delegates throughout the rest of the conference.

Q: Should we get rid of plastic bags?

Alison Brook Blenheim

Bruce Moran Blenheim

Ewen Robinson Blenheim

John Blease Blenheim

Robert Hudson Blenheim

Yes, plastic bags should go. People throw them away and they end up in my yard! It’s not hard to take a reuseable bag when you go shopping.

We should. And we should take reusable bags when we go shopping. But it will be hard to get rid of plastic bags. Charging for them helps reduce their use.

Yes, get rid of plastic bags and other throwaway plastic. There are millions of bits of plastic washed up on a remote island in the South Pacific!

Yes, plastic bags should go, but there needs to be a good alternative. Where I live, the plastic bags are often used more than once for a variety of purposes.

Not really. What would we replace them with? Flax ketes? We live in a throwaway world.

Norm Fowke Glass Dog fee woes Dear Ed, The Marlborough District Council is in the minority of councils in that it offers no discount for owners who meet good owners requirements or Gold Card holders or even rural pets versus town pets. Its only discount is for neutered bitches. I rang 13 councils when I got my bill this year and guess what - they manage financially and they have dirtbags who cause trouble and stock on their roads too and most offer discount on some or all of those, plus the neutered bitch discount too - and have cheaper fees. Like many dog owners I’m sick and tired of paying for those people, or for taking other losers to court. I was involved in rehoming a deaf dog from Taupo (whose owner was going to shoot her) and I got a barking notice for her - I’d rather pay a fine for that than these ridiculous registration fees. Other than Keller’s barking and a jailbreak with my dogs when I first moved to town, I’ve never seen a dog control officer in 30-plus years. What the hell am I paying for? User pays for God’s sake. Spring Creek Roundabout

Wooly ways

Dear Ed, My sympathy goes to the Spring Creek businesses and residents suffering the imposition of a roundabout which should never have been started. It is unnecessary. A 50km/hour zone would have been ideal, cost nothing and not disrupted the community. Marlborough Roads spokesman Frank Porter made a woeful attempt to excuse the delays. Questions arise. What input did Mr Porter have to the NZ transport authority? What is the Marlborough District Council doing about it? Is MDC going to just sit on its hands again? Percy Parker Blenheim

Spring Creek upgrade Dear Ed, As most of Marlborough knows, the Spring Creek intersection upgrade is proceeding at a torturously slow pace. Now sleep deprivation has been added to the torture with night works in operation between 9pm and 5am. I’m not talking about guys with shovels, although I’m sure there is some of that. I’m talking about heavy machinery being operated to its fullest capacity. Diggers, large trucks, and by the scraping and rumbling that has been rattling my bedroom windows I would guess that there are dozers and heavy rollers in use. As I wound my weary way to work this morning having endured a fourth consecutive night without sleep, I found myself wondering how much longer this is all going to take. Residents and businesses have been treated with a stunning lack of regard. Sleepless in Spring Creek Spring Creek

Alan and Vera Cranswick enjoy doing the puzzles that they get every week at Springlands Lifestyle Village.

By Bill McElhinney Alan and Vera Cranswick are as sharp as tacks, despite being in their 90s. Alan, 91, and Vera, 95, are residents at Springlands Lifestyle Village in Battys Road. Every week they get a bunch of puzzles, crosswords, word challenges and Sudoku. They work away at these during the week. “It keeps your brain active,” says Vera. Springlands Lifestyle management began getting the puzzles from Doug Hendry at the Puzzle Company and printing them out for staff and residents two weeks ago. Those wanting the puzzles make a gold coin donation then take the printed pages away to

peruse at their leisure. “We do a bit every day,” says Alan. “We can just put them down and come back to them when we’re ready.” “They’re clever the way they’re all put together,” Vera says. “I like doing the crosswords best. It’s a challenge for your mind. I tried the Sudoku, but my brain got too tired. “And there’s not much on the telly these days, so we enjoy the puzzles.” Research has found that keeping the brain active seems to increase its vitality and may build the reserves of brain cells and connections. Alan and Vera ran a store in Battys Road after moving to Blenheim from Wellington.

Ron hasn’t given up rocking yet By Bill McElhinney “Rock ‘n Roll Ronnie hasn’t retired yet.” Ron Davis, who has spent a good deal of his life making music in Marlborough, is still ready to help people party. In the 1950s, 60s and 70s Ron and his brother John, popularly known as Colonel, fronted popular Blenheim band The Shades and provided live music for dances all around the province. When the band stopped playing, Ron started up his jukebox business in 1990. “I went to a party in Wellington and saw everyone dancing to a jukebox,” Ron says. “So I bought several and began hiring them out for functions.” The earlier jukeboxes were

mechanical monsters that played 45rpm vinyl records. The next models played CDs and by 2000 they were computerised and all digital. “They’re New Zealand made,” Ron says. “A New Zealand firm was the first in the world to build a touch screen system.” Ron now has five jukeboxes, some big 900 watt models and one that is more portable so it can be taken to remote areas. A bout of ill health three years ago saw Ron consider winding back his involvement with the music business. So now Ron is looking at passing on the business. But in the meantime, he’s still in the music business, ready to help you party.

The NZ Heart Foundation is running an awareness campaign this month to make Kiwis more aware of the symptoms of a heart attack. Bill McElhinney talks to Chris Fredericks, a Blenheim man who has survived not one, but five, heart attacks.

Heart attack survivor Chris Fredericks and his wife Anita. Chris had to have a leg amputated after surviving five heart attacks.

Life after a heart attack Chris Fredericks had his first heart attack at age 45. “I had been helping organise St Mary’s School gala two years earlier, and had collapsed,” says Chris. “The doctor put it down to stress and heat exhaustion.” But Chris can now see it was the first warning of a chronic heart condition. He was working as the engineer at the Tux dog biscuit factory in Blenheim in 1985 when he became ill. “I had pain down my left arm, was sweating, had discomfort in my chest. I asked the boss to take me to hospital. “When I got to A and E the nurse recognised what was happening and the coronary care staff came running.” Tests confirmed Chris had suffered a heart attack. He was put on medication and eventually went back to work, half days at first. In 1997 Chris became unwell again and was diagnosed as having had another heart incident. His medication was altered and he carried on. In the meantime the Tux factory had closed and Chris had gone to work for Apex Meats, which had a smallgoods processing factory in Alabama Road.

But in 1998 he had another attack and this time the symptoms couldn’t be controlled with medication. Chris was taken to Wellington Hospital to await heart surgery. “It was touch and go,” he says. “The doctor said they wouldn’t send me back to Blenheim as I wouldn’t survive the trip.”

“It turns out our whole family suffers from congenital heart disease.” Open heart surgery followed and Chris was given a triple heart bypass. It was then he realised how his family history had caught up with him. “My Dad died of a heart attack at age 54,” says Chris. “I had uncles and aunts that all died of heart failure. My siblings have all had heart attacks. It turns out our whole family suffers from congenital heart disease.” Even after his heart surgery, Chris continued to suffer from angina, which was proving difficult to control.

“It was then that my doctor gave me an ultimatum,” says Chris. “He said if I wanted to see my grandchildren grow up, I needed to stop work.” This was a blow. Chris had forged a successful career as an engineer, but he knew his health was being affected by his work. So he resigned. “It was really tough,” says Chris, who then had to survive on a modest sickness benefit. He and his wife Anita still had five children at home, two of them teenage boys at college. However, Chris set out to do the best for his health, and on his doctor’s advice began regular walking. But in 2004 he suffered two more heart attacks. “It was awful – the worst pain I’ve experienced,” he says. He underwent an angiogram which revealed although his walking had opened up a new passage for the blood to his heart, there were other blockages. He was taken to Christchurch Hospital and four stents were inserted. Despite this, Chris suffered another attack several months later, and went back

to Christchurch where another three stents were inserted. When he came home his health improved noticeably. The angina was gone. But his damaged heart was not working to full capacity and in 2012 Chris began to experience pain in his legs. His feet became cold and painfully swollen. Some nights there was no sleep as the pain got worse. His heart was not pumping enough blood to his lower extremities. His right foot became badly infected and amputation was the only option. Chris was flown back to Wellington and his leg was amputated below the knee. But blood poisoning set in as his poor circulation couldn’t get healing drugs to the wound quickly enough. Several days later Chris was back in surgery and his infected leg was amputated above the knee. With the support of Anita, he has made the most of his situation. “You’ve got a choice,” says Chris, who is now 76. “When you wake up you can thank God for another day, or you can just roll over and give up. I’m not giving up.”

Hundreds flock to see feathered friends By Bill McElhinney Hundreds of people visited the popular Marlborough Poultry, Pigeon, Game and Duck Show last week. There were 400 entries for the show, which was held at the Riding for the Disabled Arena on Taylor Pass Road. “We usually have even more entries,” says Ashley Shadbolt, one of the judges for the large game bird and bantam sections

at the show. “But the closure of the coastal road from Christchurch deterred people, and there was a major poultry show in the Waikato last week which also drew some of our exhibitors away.” Despite that, Ashley was pleased with the standard of entries. “The quality was very high,” he says. There are many ways you can keep your family warm this winter.

Hunker down for winter For chilly winter nights, here are 10 ideas that may help keep you warmer and reduce your heating bills. Trim trees blocking the sun: Maximise the amount of sunshine coming into your house in winter by trimming over-grown trees that are shading your house. Curtains as the sun goes down: Capture the heat of the sun by pulling curtains as you lose the sun. An insulated home will help you hold this free heat for longer. Block draughts: Add foam seals to doors and windows, make sure your curtains fit, use door draught stoppers and fit under-floor insulation where possible. Check your thermostat: Have you got the temperature on your heater set higher than you need? Each extra degree of heat is costing you money so lower the thermostat to a level you’re comfortable with. Dress for the season: It is winter so don’t heat to a level where you can lounge around in t-shirt & shorts. Put usual winter layers on and adjust your thermostat down to save money. Turn off half an hour before bedtime: If you switch your heat off (or programme

15

it to turn off) half an hour before you head to bed, the residual heat will keep you warm. Throws for late night warmth: If you’re only planning on staying up for a couple of hours, keep a throw or blanket handy to curl up under instead of switching the heat on. Limit electric blankets for pre-warming only: Once you’re snug in a warm bed, your duvet or blankets should be sufficient to conserve your body heat and keep you warm through the night. If you’re still cold, perhaps a warmer duvet is in order. Check your ceiling insulation: Insulation can significantly reduce your need for heating and 30-35% of heat is lost through ceilings. If you’re already insulated you should check it hasn’t moved or settled as some types of insulation can over time. It should be sitting above the ceiling joists and if not ‘top-up’ insulation is a good idea. Switch to a heat pump: A heat pump is the most energy efficient form of electric heating available producing 4kW of heat for each 1kW of electricity.

WINTER 17 0 2 WARMTH Save while using your heat pump Heat pumps - they are a householder’s best friend when it comes to warming the home during winter. While you might be tempted to crank the heat up to the maximum for instant warmth, you will use more energy. The best way to use a heat pump is to keep the setting low (18-20 degrees Celcius). Program it to turn on 15 minutes before you need it to keep your home healthy and warm. One key tip is to have your heat pump filter cleaned regularly, or at least once a year. It’s a good idea to call in a professional to do this as they can also give your heat pump

a check over for any other problems. If you are really serious about saving money, only heat the space you’re using. Don’t have heat pumps going in bedrooms or in rooms you’re not using. Turn off your heat pump when it’s not in use. It can run for as long as you need, but make sure you switch it off when you’re not using it. Close doors and curtains to keep the heat in. If you can, get your house insulated. The better insulated your home, the better it will hold the heat and the more energy efficient the heat pump will be.

Worried about your winter heating bill? Learn how to use your heat pump efficiently so you can keep warm and healthy.

Stockpile wood for next year Winter is here and most people have their firewood already stacked, seasoned and ready to burn. Once that wood pile starts to grow smaller, consider ordering more wood and start stacking it for next year. Many wood suppliers will have ‘green’ wood available and by preparing your stock now, you won’t have the hassles of finding dry wood next winter. When to buy: Spring and summer are the best times to buy firewood. Why buy so early? For wood to burn well and cleanly it needs time to dry. You can buy ‘unseasoned’ wood and store it (in an area where air can circulate) ready for use when the cold weather arrives. If you leave it until later you may have to buy dry firewood – and pay more. Type of wood: Only burn dry, well-seasoned wood. Green wood cools the fire, creating smoke that adds to air pollution. Softwoods and medium-density woods like

pine and macrocarpa dry in around six to 12 months but burn rapidly. This means regularly adding wood to keep a cosy blaze going. ‘Old man pine’ is from trees aged 30 years or more. It’s denser than ordinary pine and contains more resin, so it burns for longer and puts out more heat. Hardwoods such as gum and manuka make a better fire as they have greater heat content and burn slowly. But freshly felled hardwoods can take up to 18 months to dry. How much firewood do I need for winter? It’s best to buy in larger quantities. To keep a woodburner going most evenings and weekends through winter you could need up to 10 cubic metres of wood. Not sure if your wood is ready to burn? Firewood should have less than 25 percent moisture. You can test it by throwing a small piece onto hot glowing coals. If it catches fire on the top and sides within one minute, it’s dry enough to burn well.

Help needed for Pamper Day event By Celeste Alexander There is a very special Pamper Day planned for next month, but the organisers need help from local businesses to make it a success. The annual event which began in 2014 was created by local community support worker Noralyn Berwick. Initially it was a gift for women she had worked with but it quickly grew into something much larger. The Pamper Day is organised by a group of volunteers for women whose life had been difficult and the idea is for them to have a relaxing day being pampered. This has been successful due to the kind

generosity of local businesses who give their time to help these women feel great, top to toe. “Pamper Day has become a marked date on the calendar for hundreds of women in the Marlborough community. More than 120 women enjoyed a day of pampering last year thanks to over 70 local businesses, including 40 hairstylists, health and beauty services, cafes and food companies and NMIT students,” Noralyn says. Planning and preparation is in full swing for this year’s Pamper Day which is set for August 17, but the group still needs help. “We are putting a call out to all hairdressers, massage therapists and nail technicians who

can donate a few hours of their time on the day. We are also looking for donations of good quality second-hand clothing and shoes. “For the women involved, being pampered is a whole new experience and not a regular occurrence so we want to make it a wonderful day for them. “Your support would be greatly appreciated so if you can help out in any way, we want to LOCAL HIRE hear from you,” Noralyn says. To contact Noralyn email norn@xtra.co.nz and all clothing donations can be dropped 90 Nelson St, Blenheim off to the Salvation Army headquarters on Nail technicians, hairdressers and masGeorge Street, Blenheim between 9am - noon sage therapists are wanted for the annual LOCAL HIRE on weekdays. Doctor David Orsbourn of enhanceskin, Nelson, has been driving over the Whangamoa Saddle on a regular basis for over four years now. His bi-weekly visits to the Churchill Private Hospital in Blenheim have helped many Marlburians free themselves from unsightly varicose veins and the pain and discomfort so often associated with them. But David will tell you that there are still many misconceptions that surround the cause and effect of varicose veins and their treatment, and he is always keen to enlighten people to prevent unnecessary suffering from this medical condition; so we caught up with him and asked him to expose some of the myths and misunderstandings around varicose veins. Myth: Women should wait until they have completed their family to have veins treated. Mythbuster: Defnitely not! That just makes for an extremely uncomfortable next pregnancy; so treat them first with the minimally invasive procedures that are available. Myth: Only seniors are affected by varicose veins. Mythbuster: Not at all… At enhanceskin we treat plenty of clients in their twenties and thirties for varicose veins. Our age range to date is 17 to 94 years old! Myth: Varicose veins are only treated for vanity’s sake. Mythbuster: This is a common misconcep-

Enhanceskin has Affiliated Provider status with Southern Cross for varicose vein treatment; and can accept payment through many other health insurance providers. If you have no health insurance in place, they can also offer patients the convenience of using Q-Card (12 months’ interest free) to pay for varicose vein treatments.

tion. Whilst you will look great following treatment and be able to wear shorts again, veins are definitely not just a cosmetic problem. They can cause heavy, painful, tired legs, with associated cramps, skin discolouration, itch, and restlessness, and if left untreated can carry longer term health risks such as, dermatitis, ulcers and even deep vein thrombosis, (blood clots) especially with long distance travel or if incapacitated by flu. Myth: Women suffer more from varicose veins than men. Mythbuster: Whilst pregnancy and menopause are factors in the formation of varicose veins, genetics is probably the main issue, so we treat lots of men who have varicose veins too. Myth: Varicose vein treatment is likely to involve general anesthesia and a hospital stay. Mythbuster: This may have been the case in the past, but not any more! Painful and unsightly varicose veins are treated using the minimally invasive Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA), and/or Ultrasound Guided Foam Sclerotherapy (UGFS). Together they’re the gold standard varicose vein treatment, designed to be fast, fairly pain-free and totally effective. It’s walk-in and walk-out, and you can even drive yourself home afterwards. If you hate needles and stockings you might be up for Venaseal, the medical glue that is comparing well with EVLA!

Treatment costs always include your follow up appointments for twelve months. To help clients gain even more clarity around the presence of varicose veins, and their treatment, enhanceskin offers a free, no obligation, doctor’s vein assessment and scan. Cabello Hair & Beauty Salon owner celebrates four years in business Jenny McClelland is celebrating four years in business by introducing her new team and some exciting new additions. It was back in 2013 that Jenny took the leap and purchased her first business, Cabello Hair and Beauty in Renwick after having worked in the industry for a decade. In that time Cabello Hair and Beauty has seen an increase in staff and attracted a loyal following of clients who come from all over Marlborough to see the team. “It’s been a very busy but good four years and I’m looking forward to many more,” she says. The team first began with Jenny who soon after welcomed Melissa Teeling, then in the last 12 months Lisa Gill and Lisa Ball.

This has provided Cabello Hair and Beauty with a good cross section of skills and expertise, Jenny says. “Each one of the girls are highly experienced with a wealth of knowledge. If you haven’t met them already, come on in or contact them to book your next hair appointment.” Jenny recently returned from maternity leave after she and her partner Josh welcomed their daughter Harriet. She says the salon is a lot busier nowadays which creates a ‘very happy and vibrant buzz’. “We have a really friendly atmosphere here and it’s nice to be back. I’d like to thank all my clients for their support,” she says. Cabello Hair and Beauty specialises in the Keune colour and retail range. “I knew I wanted to pursue hairdressing since I was a child cutting my dolls hair. I started my apprenticeship at age 15 then later realised my dream of owning my own salon. “I’ve owned Cabello now for four years and I’m happy to say that it’s grown immensely over that time. “I absolutely love this industry, each client in the chair presents a new challenge with their own unique requests and results. “It’s hugely rewarding to see the finished result and the smiles on their faces. My hours: Monday 10am-2pm; Thursday 2pm-8pm; Friday 10am-2pm and every second Saturday 10am-1pm.

“I chose hairdressing because I had a natural talent at a young age and just gravitated towards the industry. “As I’ve grown my career over the past 16 years I have developed a passion for most areas in hairdressing, showing particular strength in blondes/foils and hair-ups for bridal and formal occasions. “Hairdressing is one of the most sociable jobs and I enjoy spending my day meeting people...no day’s the same. “I’m happy to accommodate for new and existing clients where I can. “From a young age I was intrigued by all aspects of hairdressing. Starting out on my dolls and working my way up to friends and family’s hair, it’s been an industry I’ve really enjoyed over the past 10 years. “After working in a resthome hairdressing, I found a passion for working with older clientelle and it is this unique experience that I now bring to Cabello. “Having four children of my own gives me a natural ability to work with children and I strive to make it a fun experience for all of my clients, young and old. My hours: Tuesday - Friday 9am-2.30pm; Late night Tuesday 4.30pm-8pm, and every third Saturday 9am-1pm.

“I am a qualified hairdresser with 10 years experience. I was inspired from an early age by watching and trying to help my grandmother who was also a hairdresser. “I’m very dedicated and passionate in all areas of hairdressing and have competed at local and photographic hairdressing competitions. “My strengths are colour work including blonde foils and hair up-styles for special occasions. “I enjoy working with people, making their visit a great experience and helping to make them feel good about themselves.” My hours: Tuesday 9am-5pm; Wednesday 9am-6pm; Thursday 9am-8pm; Friday 2pm-6pm and every third Saturday 9am-1pm.

“I’m thrilled to announce that I am operating my new business LC Beauty out of Cabello’s beauty room. “I’ve worked in the beauty industry for eight years. I bring a passion to help clients feel as amazing as they are, specialising in a wide range of beauty services, including eyelash extensions and makeup. “I also offer a range of waxing and tinting services. “What’s unique about LC Beauty here at Cabello is that clients wanting bridal packages can take advantage of having beauty and hairdressing services under the one roof.” My hours: Late night Thursdays 5pm-8pm; Wednesday and Friday from 9.30am-2.30pm.

School team sailors gear up for international challenge By Cathie Bell A practice week in Wellington brought some of Marlborough Boys’ College team sailors close to America’s Cup sailing heroes Joe Sullivan and Peter Burling, as well as providing good experience. The storm that passed through the capital last week cancelled some sailing, but enabled Jake Morris, Iolo Adams, Caleb Barnes and their coach Ian Gardiner to watch the celebration parade through the city and to catch up with the sailors later at the Royal Port Nicholson Yacht Club. Iolo captains the college’s team sailing squad, and he, deputy Jake, and five others Toby Gregory, Jamie Thomas, Nik Link, Nick Williams, and Caleb Barnes are training hard to get ready for two big events later this year. As well as the New Zealand match racing nationals in Auckland in September, they are working towards the team sailing Pacific Rim interdominions, in Melbourne. Marlborough Boys’ College is one of three New Zealand colleges selected to attend, along with three Australian colleges and up to two Pacific Island competitors.

Coaching boost Former All Black Greg Somerville has joined the Tasman Makos coaching team for this year’s Mitre 10 Cup season. A 66-test All Blacks prop from 2000 until 2008, he is the Makos’ set piece coach, alongside a role as Tasman resource coach. Greg played 115 games for the Crusaders over 11 seasons, before spending two years with Gloucester, in England, before concluding his playing career in 2011 with the Melbourne Rebels.

Thursday run Jake Morris, Ian Gardiner, and Iolo Adams are working on team sailing tactics.

Team sailing involves two teams of three yachts each, all sailing against each other in ‘intense’ short races using lots of tactics to

score points to win, which adds layers of complexity to the races, as it’s not just first to cross the line. The team is fundraising hard,

and holding a pizza evening and auction at Dodson’s on Monday, along with a firewood raffle.

The Marlborough Harrier Club is holding a pack/training run or walk tomorrow evening, leaving from the clubrooms at Oliver Park on the corner of Weld and Cleghorn Streets, Redwoodtown, at 6pm. Reflector gear is compulsory. Joggers and walkers regardless of ability are welcome. For more information go to http:// www.harriers.net.nz/ or contact Peter Mann on 0274475028.

Central Pirates triumphant again The 2017 Knockout Cup was taken out by favourites Central Pirates. They were just too strong for Blenheim Valley United who are a fantastic multi-cultural side, but even after a frustrating first half for Pirates with some sloppy passing and giving away possession to an enthusiastic United, that ended after the introduction of Harrison Pine. Sam Pearson went on to score a hat-trick after Pirates started pulling off some great fast paced moves, while Liam Sluiter added one Find out what your property might be worth today. towards the end of the game with a nice bit of skill back heeling it into the goal ending the game at 4-0. The knockout shield final was a seesawing affair, but with two minutes to go Ben Shallcrass secured his hat-trick to save the game from extra time between Clubs of Marlborough Rangers and Blenheim Valley Masters. Masters scored first to prolific scorer Ben Clarke who also went on to score a hattrick, but the difference despite missing two penalty chances for Clubs was Neil Henrys free kick that sailed into the net giving them a 4-3 win. The knockout bowl final was won by Central sticking with their names out of a hat tradition that saw Greg Stretch scoring from open play while Jared Nott and Scott Wilkinson also adding to the tally for a 3-1 win over Blenheim Valley Woodbourne and Blenheim Valley Cobras won the Plate final beating Picton Crow Tavern Masters 5-3.
