Rugby yarns

By Celeste Alexander There will be plenty of rugby yarns shared from the couch this Saturday during ‘Couch-Bind-Engage,’ a fundraising event for the New Zealand King Salmon Marlborough Boys’ College First XV and MBC rugby club. Tickets cost $40 each and are still available for this event, which will also feature silent and live auctions, mystery envelopes, finger food and a cash bar.

A great night out not to be missed Continued from page 1 The evening’s major highlight will be guest speakers William Kingita Te Pohe ‘Billy’ Bush, a Canterbury prop and former All Black, former Marlborough prop Bosun Huntley, former All Black Greg Somerville and specialised tighthead prop, Makos manager Marty Vercoe and former Makos player Joe Wheeler who is in his fifth season with the Highlanders. Supporting this fundraiser are a number of very generous businesses who have donated high quality items for the auctions. Local wine company Mud House was an official sponsor of the 2017 British & Lions Tour of NZ and through the sponsorship, has sourced a rugby jersey signed by the Lions. Mud House vineyard manager Nev Gane says on a recent visit by Lions management, it was arranged for the jersey to be signed. “It was signed especially for the

MBC team, knowing it was going to a good cause.” Nev, whose son Aiden plays hooker in the MBC team, says he hopes the event can raise a good amount for the team. “The amount of travelling these boys do is costly, particularly now

since the Kaikoura earthquake making the road to Christchurch inland. “I travel away with the team and see first hand how this cost alone has increased, so hopefully the community will come along and support this great cause,” he says. Team coach Gray Cornelius agreed,

saying the money raised from the fundraiser will greatly help with travel expenses. “This is our biggest annual fundraiser and so far we’ve had some great support from local businesses. “I know the team is looking forward to the night, meeting and hearing some yarns from our guest speakers. There are still tickets available so come along and enjoy it for yourself,” he says. Asked how the team was going this year, Gray says it’s ‘OK, middle of the table so far’. “We’ve had a number of injuries and adversities so the last five games will determine how the season goes really.” Tickets for ‘Couch-Bind-Engage’ are just $40, and available online from http://bit.ly/mbcrugby. Alternatively, from Tractor Repairs & Spares in Renwick, the Health Hub in Blenheim or the MBC office. The event runs from 6-10pm.

Top of the south to top of the north Rai Valley Area School and Auckland’s Long Bay College couldn’t be any further apart, both geographically, and scholastically, but in term four of this year students from both colleges will get a chance to experience secondary school from a completely different perspective. In October, five Year 9 and 10 students from decile 10 Long Bay College will fly down to Rai Valley and spend four days in locals’ homes and at school in order to experience a slice of rural life and education. The exchange is timed to coincide with Rai Valley Area School’s annual Pet Day, where students bring all manner of creatures great and small to complete in a myriad of competitions, as this is likely to be an event few from bigger urban schools would ever experience. Rai Valley students will then accompany their Long Bay counterparts back up to

Auckland for four days in one of New Zealand’s larger secondary schools, attending classes and experiencing life in the big city. The exchange will also involve a swap of staff expertise with Rai Valley gaining an English/drama teacher, and Long Bay, a science teacher. Rai Valley Principal, Angela Sloane says the opportunity is brilliant for professional learning and development, benefiting both staff and the kids. The idea for the exchange came from a conversation between the ex-principal of Long Bay, Russell Brooke, and Angela about working together, after a staff member from Long Bay moved down to Rai Valley to escape Auckland’s notorious house prices. Both principals hope it can become a yearly fixture and break the moulds of the Rai Valley Area School students taking part in the exchange from left: Katie Roeske, Charlotte Partridge, Cyrus Jope and Leah Wearing. way schools traditionally work together.

Book published to help others

Grassmere farmer Doug Avery, with his book which is to be released on Monday.

By Cathie Bell Grassmere farmer Doug Avery is taking his message of hope and emotional resilience to a wider audience, with a book going on sale on Monday and a series of videos online. Doug has written a book, ‘The Resilient Farmer’, with author Margie Thomson to help others in his position and their friends and families. In it, he tells his story, about farming at Bonavaree and the impact eight years of drought had on him and his mental and emotional health, and then, what gave him hope and a way out of his severe depression. “I was a broken man. I had to break to change. “I’m now grateful for that, because the change is so good. I’ve learnt the art of critical thinking, and I love teaching people to do that now. “I didn’t realise how hamstrung I was prior to breaking.” Doug says at the trough of his depression he was ‘so bitter and angry’.

“I thought at one stage of my life, I’d buggered everything up. “When I read my own story, it makes me shed a tear… My life’s quite tough.” His life now is to share what he’s learnt with those who want to listen and learn, he says. “That seems to be becoming quite a lot.” Doug says he is extremely grateful to former All Black Sir John Kirwan who broke the mould and revealed his fight with depression, as ‘I wouldn’t have done it if it wasn’t for him’. “Every man in New Zealand can be extremely grateful to that man for his courage.” Sir John encouraged him to write a book about his experiences to help rural people, and he wrote a foreword in Doug’s book. A popular speaker at rural events around New Zealand, Doug is starting a tour of towns to promote the book next month and says he is already getting good feedback about the book. “I never thought in my life I’d ever be involved in a book.”

NZ Post can use electric Paxter vehicles to deliver the post in suburban Blenheim, the Marlborough District Council has agreed. The vehicles will not be used in the central business district and must give way to pedestrians and mobility scooters.

New business manager Business Trust Marlborough has appointed bank manager and district councillor Brian Dawson as its new manager, replacing Sue Avery on August 21. Trust chairman David Hall says Brian was chosen from ‘a very strong field of candidates’. “We are very pleased to appoint Brian. He has a very strong track record in both managing a small/medium business and also as the former General Manager of the Marlborough Chamber of Commerce. “Business Trust Marlborough is now also providing support services to the new Angel Investors Marlborough and we both believe Brian will be able to help both organisations to grow and develop.’’

Pamper Day help needed

Seddon drinking water on the way By Cathie Bell The Marlborough District Council has awarded a contract to build the drinking water treatment plant in Seddon, and work is to start in October. Council assets and services manager Richard Coningham says the contract for the design and construction of the water treatment plant has been awarded to national water firm Filtration Technology Ltd, FILTEC. Work at the Wakefield Street site of the new plant is scheduled to begin in October, he says. It is hoped to be finished by May next year,

which means that the township’s 200 homes will have tap water supply that meets the national drinking water standards and the existing boil water notice can be lifted. The $4.4M water treatment project is being partly funded by a $1m government subsidy and from council reserves. The balance is being shared between Seddon residents and the district’s ratepayers through a capped annual charge on Seddon households in the scheme and a charge spread across all ratepayers. Richard says the council has secured confirmation from the Ministry of Health that the timeframe for the water treatment

plant subsidy for the Seddon scheme will be extended to cover the completion of this project. Work on the township’s water reticulation system will be done in conjunction with the treatment plant. This pipework will take untreated water from the Wakefield Street bulk main to the treatment plant from where the treated water will be distributed into the Seddon network. This will include separating untreated water from drinking water so it can be used for irrigation of the sports domain and bowling green.

By Cathie Bell A suburban Blenheim garden hides a collection of fantastic sculpture, as collector and art historian Judith Anderson has found places for some of her favourite artists’ work. This includes ‘Rite of Rights’ by Graham Bennett, with suspended rocks, and ‘Squeeze’ by Paris-based artist Marian Fountain. Judith describes herself as a retired art dealer with more than 200 paintings, and since she moved to Marlborough 15 months ago, she has discovered a thriving lively arts scene. “I’ve collected art and objects all my life.”

Judith says sculpture, pottery, and paintings are ‘the content of my life’ – “they’re everywhere”. Here she is still working, doing valuation of art collections and installation of art, and has been attending local events. “I do feel there is a wonderful lively arts scene for such a small town. It’s fantastic. Coming here, it’s fantastic that the arts scene is so vibrant and lively.” She went to a Marlborough Potters’ Organisation event, which was wonderful. “I couldn’t resist… My word, what an eyeopener that was.”

By Bill McElhinney New mums at Wairau Hospital maternity unit will soon enjoy the comfort of new chairs in which to feed their babies. “We have a couple of breast feeding chairs at the moment,” acting charge midwife Sue McNabb says, “but they’re getting a bit past it.” Sue says the plan is to put the new chairs side by side so women can socialise as they feed their babies. The $1750 to buy the new chairs comes courtesy of the Zonta Club of Marlborough. “ We’ve f u nd ra ise d through things such a movie nights at Top Town Cinema, auction evenings at the Bamboo Garden restaurant,” Charlotte Wood, the club’s status of women committee chair, says. The Marlborough club currently has about 18 members. “Anyone can join,” Charlottes says. “We meet at the Marlborough Women’s Club on the first Wednesday of each month.”

More to be done on rubbish and recycling Council staff are to investigate ways for households to recycle large amounts. Solid waste manager Alec McNeil told councillors at last week’s assets and services committee a survey of residents shows people do not replace rubbish bags with wheelie bins if it means extra cost, but there are things the council can do to reduce problems people are having with the bags and recycling bins. Some people say the bins are too small for the amount of recycling they have – for example, bulk cardboard when they’ve moved house

Solid waste manager Alec McNeil

or bought a new appliance – and there could be things that could be done, he says. One option raised was to let people put out more than one

recycling bin. Alec says 72 per cent of households in the survey have two people or less, and that underpins the level of service the council is offering. “Not all those people are on fixed incomes, but it does start to give a picture of the community.” Moving from bags or bins to wheelie bins will cost about $1 a week extra on rates, and that is ‘still a significant increase’, he says. More will be done to show people how to minimise litter and discourage dogs and vermin from getting at bags.

Phil maps weather for Picton people By Bill McElhinney Picton has its own weatherman. Philip Middlemiss, a retired former Telecom technician, moved to Picton from Christchurch with his wife, Alison, a former nurse, nearly two years ago. Philip, who has a lifetime interest in technology, ran a weather station from his home in Burwood for 20 years. He was recently approached by NIWA (National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research) to provide between two and five years of specific data he had collected at Burwood. Philip’s Picton Weather, which anyone can access for free on the internet, records temperature, humidity, wind speed, air pressure and rainfall and is updated every 10 seconds. It generates an updated forecast six times a day and will even tell you how much more daylight there is each day. The station gets around 100 visitors each day at this time of the year but two or three times that during the busy summer season, and even more during a weather event such as last week’s rainstorm. “The boaties approached me and asked if I could give some data in knots,” says Philip. “It took a bit of work but I was able to do it.” The station is powered by technology created by an English university as a teaching tool for its students. “It’s called Raspbery Pie,” Philip says with a grin. “When I asked the university why they called it that, they said ‘Apple was already taken.” Philip took the Raspberry Pie unit, which he says has the power of a really good laptop, and wrote the programmes for his Picton site. “I have to tweak it every now and again, and I had to modify the graphics.” Setting up a similar unit would cost about $2000, but Philip’s station uses gear he has accumulated over the years.

Babies well supplied Dear Ed, In response to Charity begins at home (Sun 19/07/17), I would like to assure the author that the babies of Blenheim are well supplied with lovely little woollen singlets, booties and hats by the knitters (of various ages) of this town. We so appreciate the regular donations of these along with woollen blankets, which we use for many babies as they arrive. There is plenty of knitting to go around and share with the world as well as our babes here. I know that many knitters appreciate donations of wool so they can keep on giving their contributions for others to benefit. Robin Jones Core Midwife, Wairau Maternity

Troy Wilson Blenheim I think the general election is November, 21st I think. Yes, I’ll be voting. I always do.

Dear Ed, It’s been eight months since our big earthquake, but almost half of the people with insurance claims on their houses are still waiting for assessements. How can this be? What is wrong with the companies that this first basic step has yet to be done for so many people, particularly those in the south of the district whose houses are the most damaged? I worry greatly that the lessons of Christchurch haven’t been learnt and we’re going to have Marlburians suffering for years like the poor Cantabrians. Shakey Blenheim

Woollen response Dear Ed, The ‘Sun’ provides an amazing service for our community, informing, enlightening, questioning and joining us together, among other things, for which we thank you. In referring to, ‘Wooly ways, Charity begins at home’, 19.7.17, the writer needs wonder no more as babies born in Blenheim will be able to use the lovely singlets shown, and more through the Plunket and Maternity unit, as we did last year also. Our sincere thanks to the wider community, individuals as well as groups, those from ‘sight impaired’, we are SO grateful & humbled as well as encouraged. Songs to ring out at Wesley Centre By Bill McElhinney Popular songs from the works of Gilbert and Sullivan will feature in the next performance by the Marlborough Singers. The all-comers choir, formerly the Blenheim Choral Society, is the longest-established choir in Blenheim. “Anyone can join,” says choir member Tessa Sutherland. “You don’t have to be able to read music; you just need to love to sing.” The Marlborough Singers has about 45 members, Tessa says. They meet weekly at the Wesley Centre throughout the year to rehearse for their biannual concerts. Their repertoire ranges from classical to modern music. Recent concerts have featured Handel’s Messiah and Marlborough Singers Go Pop which, as the name suggests, featured modern music. Their next concert, to be held at the Wesley Centre on July 29 and 30, features songs from the Gilbert and Sullivan musicals Mikado, HMS Pinafore, Pirates of Penzance and others. The choir is conducted by

Robert Tucker, a professional baritone singer. “The choir has gone from strength to strength under Robert’s direction,” Tessa says. “He identifies which each of the four parts the choir need to hone their performance. “And he does it in a fun way that is non-threatening and makes everyone feel valued. “It helps us grow in confidence.” Robert studied at the University of Otago before moving to Australia where he was an emerging performer at the Australian Opera Studio. He was a finalist in the Lexus Song Quest in 2005 and came second in the New Zealand Aria competitions in 2009. After living and working in the United Kingdom for five years he moved to Blenheim and continues to work on the stage and concert hall around New Zealand. The Marlborough Singers go Topsy Turvey: music from Gilbert and Sullivan, at the Wesley Centre, Henry St, Blenheim, July 29 at 7pm and July 30 at 4pm.

Keen gardener Doug Shaw popped down to Pollard Park rose garden on Wednesday to get some tips on pruning from Marlborough District Council gardener Gavin Smith.

Roses get the chop at Pollard Park By Bill McElhinney The rose garden at Pollard Park in Blenheim makes a lovely display in spring and summer with a myriad of different coloured blooms and rose scents in the air. But there is a lot of work that goes on behind the scenes to ensure this vibrant display, and at this time of the year Marlborough District Council gardeners are busy pruning. “There are over 800 rose bushes to prune,” says council gardener Gavin Smith. He and others in the council team were at the rose garden

last week pruning back the plants. They also pass on skills and advice to any interested members of the public who want some expert advice on pruning. “We cut them back quite hard to rejuvenate the canes,” says Gavin. They also replace old and diseased plants every year, sometimes a dozen or more. When pruning is done the roses are sprayed with a lime sulphur mix and two weeks later a copper spray is applied.

Catherine Coates, welfare manager.

Connecting the pieces in this but unless we have an honest relationship already, that’s not going to work,” Catherine says. “A lot of what I’m doing is meeting and greeting, getting to know people and agencies to see whether we can help each other, either formally or in a support space.

“Last November’s 7.8 magnitude earthquake has brought a lot of things into focus.” “If we don’t do that preparation right, our response will be limited.” Catherine says there is a lot of work involved. “I’ve got a lot to learn. One of the delights of the job is that I’m surrounded by people who willingly share knowledge, who know their space really well.

Last year’s earthquake has highlighted the need to plan for the worst. Cathie Bell talks with new Civil Defence welfare manager Catherine Coates about her role in that.

When a big natural disaster happens, there is no time to plan or organise – all that needs to be done beforehand. Last November’s 7.8 magnitude earthquake has brought a lot of things into focus, and one of those things is the need for good welfare systems to help people cope after the event. Marlborough Civil Defence has now employed Catherine Coates as its welfare manager, a new fulltime position. The job involves maintaining an oversight of the agencies involved in welfare in emergencies, she says. The job was a part-time position last year, but it’s a new position in its current form. A key part of it is making sure there are strong working relationships between Marlborough’s Civil Defence organisation and the agencies in the community. “It’s all very well saying things to agencies who will be involved

That was it.” The Marlborough Sounds, particularly Pelorus Sound, is ‘something we both love’, Catherine says. “Marlborough seemed a very good move for both of us and it has been.” The water taxi was a great way of meeting people, she says. They decided they would do it for a limited time, as it has ‘a very high level of customer service’, and they ran the water taxi business for seven years before selling it. Catherine has been commuting to Wellington for the past six years. “I decided it’s time to spend more time here. I decided to make that move this year, and keeping my eye on what was available and this popped up.”

“You are only as good as the team around you, and for me, that includes the agencies and wider Marlborough community.” Catherine says Marlborough does have a significant, strong array of agencies that would be involved in welfare in an emergency, but there is a ‘challenge’ with Marlborough being ‘quite small’, mandated agencies which have a critical role in an emergency don’t always have an office here and she’s having to work closely with Nelson. “That’s not a problem. The district health board is primarily based in Nelson, but that doesn’t stop us having effective working relationship with the DHB and the Primary Health Organisation.” Catherine moved to Marlborough in 2003, when the couple bought a water taxi business in Pelorus Sound. They have a bach in Pelorus Sound, and Catherine says her husband had always said that

Pipi Boyd couldn’t make it, but his son Glen was on hand to join other RSA stalwarts for a triple birthday celebration on Thursday. Cutting the cake with Glen is Olive Sutherland Waite, who turns 98 today, RSA president Ross Cooke and Hazel Hislop who turned 92 on Monday.

RSA stalwarts By Bill McElhinney “More than 200 years – that’s a lot of service to humanity.” Marlborough Returned and Services Association president Ross Cooke made this remark as he and other RSA members gathered at the RSA lounge, Clubs of Marlborough, on Thursday to honour three stalwarts. It was Pipi Boyd’s 90th birthday on Thursday and they had made a cake for the occasion, but Pipi had suffered a setback the day before and couldn’t make it. He lives at Rarangi and is a keen beachcomber, but got knocked over by a rogue wave and wasn’t feeling well enough to make it on the day. “But we’ll save some birthday cake for him,” Ross said. Pipi’s family, some of who had come from Australia for his birthday, arranged another get-together for friends and family at the Clubs of Marlborough on Saturday and a crowd gathered there to celebrate with Pipi. Pipi joined the navy to fight in World War II. “I think he lied about his age when he enlisted,” Ross says. Pipi went on to fight with New Zealand troops in Korea, Malaya, Borneo and Vietnam. Hazel Hislop, who turned 92 on Monday, has been a long time supporter of the women’s section of the RSA, Ross says. “But I’m retiring now after 36 years on the

Weddings Must-have wedding photos you don’t want to miss

Blooming great Thinking about flowers? Here are a few ideas for your wedding bouquet. Romantic bouquets. Think flowers in full bloom, trailing. Romantic bouquets would work perfectly with a classic lace bridal gown. Greenery. Green is a top colour trend for 2017/2018 so it is only natural that greenery is popular in the world of wedding flowers this year. Green works particularly well for those planning a contemporary wedding. Oversized bouquets. More and more brides are looking for bouquets that create as much as a visual impact as their wedding dress. Oversized bouquets work particularly well at country, rustic celebrations.

A wedding day can be a busy, stressful time and in the rush to get ready, out the door and up the aisle, some of the smaller details might be missed. Ask your photographer to capture some special shots during the preparation so when you look back, you will have stunning memories to cherish. Getting ready You’ll want to see both sides getting ready, so ask your photographer to shoot the guys doing their ties up while the gals do the same with their dress zippers. Your dress Granted, you’ll have about 100 wedding pictures of you in your dress, but a still life lets you preserve it in your memory just like the first time you saw it, a beautiful piece of wearable art. Bridal details This portrait is a great way to capture small touches, like hair and jewelry. Your rings You’ll actually want two shots. One alone against your dress for a high-fashion look, and one of your two rings together to symbolise your new union. Welcome bags You put effort into these gifts for your guests, ask your photographer to document them before people dig in.

The groom’s accessories This may seem a little ‘artsy’ but it’s really nice to have. After all, the groom’s extras are carefully chosen too, so why should the dress and bridal accessories get all the love? The bridal bouquet It’s detail shots like these that will really help tell the story of your wedding. The bridesmaid bouquets A group shot of your bridesmaid bouquets will remind you how much fun it was having these close friends and family by your side. Bridal portrait A posed shot worthy of a fashion magazine will make you feel like a model. The first look A playful take on the first look with the bride covering her groom’s eyes is a new classic. The other first look You’ve heard about the first look photo, well this is the first moment the bridal party (and Mum and Dad) sees you. Pre-ceremony emotions Whether it’s your separate car rides to the ceremony or last words of advice from parents, these final moments are emotional and worth capturing.

Images such as the bride and groom reading special messages for one another before the ceremony are beautiful photographic opportunities.

Weddings Sweets, soaps or sentiment Wedding favour ideas for inspiration

Wedding favours are a sweet touch.

Throughout the generations there have been many different types of wedding favours used, from boxed-up pieces of wedding cake through to embroidered handkerchiefs with the happy couple’s initials. Today, the options are endless. Popular wedding favours include candy, cupcakes, chocolates, miniature bottles of wine, personalised CDs, small potted plants or handmade keepsakes. While it’s not an obligation to provide wedding favours, they are a nice personal touch and can include a significant meaning for the bride and groom. Depending on your budget, they can be purchased or handmade. Here are some wedding favour ideas to get you started. - Scratch-off lottery tickets - Seed packs or flower bulbs for an outdoor wedding - Caramel apples for an autumn wedding - Christmas ornaments for a holiday wedding - Hand-decorated cookies or homemade candy - Pudding in a jar - Printed copy of the wedding cake recipe - Mason jars filled with sweets - Handmade soaps - Scented candles

Weddings Top that! Some couples top their wedding cakes with flowers, others with their initials. There is no limit to what you can top your wedding cake with, and the best part is that it becomes a keepsake that stays with you long after the cake has gone. Here are some ideas for wedding toppers. - Simple and sweet, display your new surname on a banner. - Add some sparkle to your cake with a crystalembellished topper. - Use rope to create the letter of your surname. - A rustic cake topper made of gold painted twigs. - A vintage teacup wedding cake topper filled with fresh flowers. - A pair of animal figurines painted in gold, white or silver. These can be anything from deer and stags to cute bears and birds. - A mock pair of cowboy boots for a touch of country. - Personalised figurines from your favourite movie.

Wedding cake toppers can be creative or traditional.

Runway predictions As couples look ahead to 2018 for planning their nuptials, here are some of the hottest trends predicted for the top fashion runways later this year. Bridal Gowns New York’s Bridal Fashion Week is held in early October so what can you expect to see for brides? Extremes…. From super sexy, barely there gowns to the ever popular traditional. Plunging necklines, off the shoulder, flutter sleeves, ruffles, bows, two-piece crop tops, floral appliques, capes and long trains, as well as the still popular lace. Experts are saying we can even expect to see brides wearing gowns in blushes, metallics, as well as muted and bold colours, forgoing the typical ivory/white wedding gown. Tuxedos and suits With more grooms choosing to make their own statements when it comes to wedding attire you can see some wearing suits in bolder colours, such as in the plum and burgundy family, textures such as tweed, and even floral accents. Slim fitted suits, bow ties, and suspenders are still popular.

Trust takes care of trips to Nelson

Kelvin Smith at Omega Rentals makes a car available for voluntary drivers like Sally Lang to take Picton and Blenheim people to and from appointments at Nelson Hospital.

By Bill McElhinney Getting Marlborough patients to and from Nelson Hospital has been an issue ever since a free shuttle service ended in 2012. But the Marlborough Sounds Community Vehicle Trust, which launched its own community car service last year, has a solution. Initially the Trust took people from Picton and Waikawa, but has extended the service to take patients from Blenheim. Trust spokesman Bryan Strong said during a chance conversation with a friend, he discovered that he was a volunteer driver for a Twizel/Tekapo Vehicle Trust, and he

suggested Bryan contact Tony Henderson in Timaru. Tony, who had been instrumental in helping to set up vehicle trusts in Canterbury, came to Picton and made a presentation. A committee was formed which gained trust status and then got to work organising finance, drivers and a vehicle. Picton supermarket Fresh Choice has got behind the trust, as have the Marlborough District Council and the Nelson Marlborough District Health Board. Bryan says the biggest support has come from Omega Rental Cars, who supply trust

drivers with a car. “It’s great,” says Picton based volunteer driver Sally Lang. “If I get called on I drive to Omega in Picton or Blenheim, pick up a nice car, then pick up my passenger, or passengers. “We drive to their Nelson Hospital appointment and when they’re ready, we take them home. “It’s very rewarding and you meet some really nice people.” Bryan says there are adozen or so volunteer drivers. “It may mean a 7.30 start on the dark of a winter’s morning, drive to Blenheim, pick up passengers from two different addresses and then drive to Nelson, wait for couple of hours and drive back. “It’s quite an ask and yet they have always been there when we needed them.” Bryan says that despite the amazing generosity of Omega Rental Cars, the trust should not continue to rely on them. “At some stage we will need our own vehicle based in Picton and if the numbers from Blenheim continue to grow we may need a car based in the Blenheim area, which would mean the need for Blenheim-based drivers,” he says. To use the service you need to be a member of the trust, which costs $15 per annum. The return trip costs $40 per passenger. If you live in the Picton or Blenheim area the pick-up will be from your home but beyond that a trust driver will pick-up anywhere along Queen Charlotte Drive and/or State Highway 6. Bryan says patient travel costs may be reimbursed if you have a community services card, the distance travelled is more than 80 kilometres and you are registered for national travel assistance.

Celebrity Mike King to speak to youth By Celeste Alexander A local group, led by Blenheim woman Jayne Glover, has organised for well-known comedian and speaker Mike King to come to the region to talk to schools and the community in September. Jayne’s teenager daughter Lara Glover was killed in a car accident earlier this year, and it’s in her memory that Jayne wanted to organise the event. Five talks, titled ‘Listen to Lara’s Message’, will be held for all three colleges, one for alternative education providers, and another for the community between September 6 and 8. It’s hoped that these talks will reach between 7000 and 10,000 people. Mike, known for his motivating and moving speeches, will be looking to inspire people to ask for help, to care for one another as well as addressing the issue of cyber-bullying. “Blenheim is well overdue for this. From what I hear there is a high rate of sudden deaths and accidents in Marlborough and it’s important that our youth know where to go to ask for help and to keep themselves, their friends and families safe,”

Jayne says. The idea to bring Mike to Blenheim was Jayne’s who says there were ‘numerous’ influences following her daughter’s death that caused ‘concern’. “In the first two weeks after the accident I had over 500 teenagers come through my house. That’s when I decided to have a teen farewell at the house and it was reading how the atmosphere was and around that time there had been a lot of cyberbullying that had started up, so I knew something had to be done. “Mike and his wife Jo have been friends of a family member for some time so when Lara passed away it was suggested to get Mike down to talk to the youth of Marlborough. I happened to be talking to Jac Lockington and she helped me get the ball rolling and that’s how it all started,” she says. Jayne and Jac have been joined by others who have helped to source funding, donations towards Mike’s trip including accommodation, flights and a rental car. There will also be a ‘Listen to Lara’s Message’ team present at each of the talks, including representatives from the Mental Health

Hub who will be on hand to provide information and support. Thousands of keyrings will be handed out with ‘Listen to Lara’s Message’ on them as well as contact numbers for those needing help and support.

“The more people that attend the better. It’s my biggest hope that everyone in Marlborough takes this message on board,” Jayne says. The days the public are invited to attend are Thursday, September 7 - the Queen Charlotte College will

be opening its doors to the Picton community to attend at 1.30pm. In Blenheim the community is invited to the Clubs of Marlborough main hall on Friday, September 8 at 1.30pm. Entry is free.

‘Creative occurrence’ happening By Cathie Bell It is being described as creative, colourful, inspiring and thought-provoking. ‘Eight: A Show of Work’ is an exhibition that straddles art and craft, bringing together eight talented local exhibitors at the Yealands Estate Marlborough Art Society Gallery for a two-day exhibition this weekend. As the name suggests, there are eight exhibitors: Kerry McCormick, Susanne Jensen, Jill Newman, Barbara Lormans, narrow dog workshop, Jean Wilson, Jeanette Maxwell, and Deborah Walton-Derry. The artists meet on a regular basis to work on their art, discuss ideas and generally engage in some creative time together. The one thing all these artists have in common is that they are all innovators. There’s a desire not only to create, but to push boundaries, try new techniques and materials and expand on what can be achieved. All of which adds up to a very

exciting and diverse exhibition. The idea of holding an exhibition sprang from conversation over lunch one sunny Friday last Christmas. Like all good ideas, ‘Eight: A Show of Work’ quickly gained momentum and as this year unfolded, the exhibition has become both a challenge and an opportunity to present works to the public. Exhibits include textile art, quilting, sugar art, wearable art, collage, photography, weaving and dyeing, fabric and yarn-based craft. The Friday 28 July opening event is by invitation only but everyone is welcome to come along and experience this fabulously creative occurrence between 10.30am and 4.30pm on Saturday 29 and Sunday 30 July. ‘Eight: A Show of Work’, at the Yealands Estate Marlborough Art Gallery, open 10.30am to 4.30pm, Saturday 29 and Sunday 30 July 2017. Admission by gold coin donation.

Gallery gets a makeover By Bill McElhinney There’s a new look and a new appointment at the Yealands Estate Marlborough Art Society Gallery in High Street, Blenheim. The exterior of the gallery has had a paint job and the society has appointed a new exhibitions manager. “Helen Ballinger has accepted the exhibitions role for the society,” president Ian Welsh says. “Helen, who is evening classes and workshops coordinator, brings a wealth of expertise and experience to the role. “ She is wel l k now n i n Marlborough and a talented artist in her own right.” Helen says she will enjoy her new role. She will organise exhibition programmes, labels for the exhibits and publicity for the events and hang the exhibits in the gallery, although she has plenty of help from society members. Art Society member Sue Duckworth sparked a competition to come up with a new exterior

look for the gallery. The prize, free picture framing, was won by Alex Henry. The society, which has about 300 members, moved into the High Street gallery debt free in 2000. The move provided the Society with its first on site gallery space and exhibitions were held at regular intervals. As demand for exhibition space increased a larger gallery area was needed and in April 2009 the gallery was extended. In February 2010 a second gallery extension was opened, again debt free thanks to the loyalty of the members and friends of the society and sponsorship of the Yealands Estate Winery and Mark Stevenson First National Realty, Blenheim. The society aims to promote the creative arts by providing opportunities for education in a wide range of differing media and giving opportunity for artists to exhibit their works in regular exhibitions.

By Cathie Bell Havelock artist Rick Edmonds has collaborated on a piece of art with his son Josh, which is being shown in Auckland and will go to Australia and the United States. Rick says he is the only Marlborough artist involved in the Creative Mirrors project, celebrating creativity. About 50 artists are taking part, with 20 from New Zealand. The project involves established artists producing an art work based around half a provided sketch image, which are all different. The corresponding half is given to a family member. Each person works on their half independently from the other, without communicating about how they are treating the subject matter.

Rick and Josh, based in Auckland working as a music producer, worked separately on their mirror pieces for about a month. Their shared image was a lighthouse, and the first time they saw each other’s work was at the exhibition opening in Auckland. Rick says it was an amazing moment when he first saw how Josh had interpreted the same subject. “What was remarkable about what Josh and I did was how similar we treated the subject. Our artistic style was very similar. But there were these beautiful points of difference. “When you look at the combined picture, it certainly looked like a carefully considered whole; yet neither of us knew what the other was doing”.

Steel goes up on stadium

inbrief

By Bill McElhinney Work has started on strengthening the walls of Marlborough Lines Stadium 2000. Blenheim firm Scott Construction have begun fastening large steel beams to the exterior walls of the stadium. The centre suffered some damage in the 7.8 magnitude November earthquake. The walls of the stadium are now being repaired and at the same time seismic strengthening is being carried out. Both walls on either side of the indoor courts are being braced and strengthened. Earthquake damage to the panels on the eastern wall meant part of the

lifted soon as the remedial work was done. The work was likely to take six weeks and larger seismic strengthening could take up to a year. The entire project is likely to cost between $1m and $2m, Luke says. Stadium manager Paul Tredinnick says the limit on numbers did not affect sporting events, but it did affect larger events such as concerts and shows. It will be good to get the stadium back up to full capacity again as larger events had to be rescheduled or cancelled, he says. The strengthening work is important as the stadium catered for large numbers of people, Paul says.

Moutere did well in last weekend’s rugby finals, winning the men’s division one final and the women’s final at Lansdowne Park. But the club didn’t have it all their own way with College Old Boys beating Moutere’s division two men’s team.

Tasman women join Tasman has joined the Farah Palmer Cup competition, giving women rugby players in Nelson and Marlborough a chance to test themselves in the national provincial championship. The first of their six games will be played against Waikato at Lansdowne Park in Blenheim on September 2 .

Sport Tasman and Awatere become dance partners

The Konga class in action. Photo provided.

Konga dance classes are so popular with Awatere residents that there will now be regular classes, after a one-off session last week went really well. Funded by Sport Tasman, 37 people ranging from young children to a grandmother crammed into the hall last Friday night for an hour of Konga, a fun and easy-to-follow fusion of boxing, cardio and dance, done to funky music. A Seddon Youth Group coordinator, Vicky Carson, says it was a lot of fun and those who took part want to do it again. ``It went really, really well. We all had a laugh, although some of us older ones felt it the next day. “We wanted something for kids to do in the school holidays which was a bit different and open to everyone in the community.’’ The most recent class in the Awatere Memorial Hall proved so popular that there are plans to hold them monthly. The class was taken by Fleur Hebberd of Blenheim-based Burn & Blast Fitness, who says it’s designed to get people moving in a fun way at their own pace. “People really embraced it. We had a lot of kids, some mums and even a dad there. ‘’

Mel Greenwood, Sport Tasman’s manager of community sport in Marlborough, says she is confident funding can be found to hold classes monthly. They originally started in Seddon and Ward the previous school holidays but it wasn’t until the local youth group got involved that numbers picked up, with Mel saying a turnout of 37 was great for a small community where the sport and recreation options were often more limited. Sport Tasman had earlier been approached by the Marlborough District Council to provide holiday activities as part of the earthquake relief effort, and has provided a mobile skate park, organised activities for pre-schoolers and youth, made its activity trailer available and run a football league. ``We have also been playing a leading role in developing a sport and recreation plan for Kaikoura’s post-earthquake recovery and we wanted to be able to support Awatere and Ward in a similar way.’’ Mel says dance “is a great way to get people active and attracts all ages and abilities’’ and it was what the community wanted.

How much clearance is required?

Responsibilities

Under the Electricity (Hazards from Trees) Regulations 2003, trees must be kept a safe distance from power lines for public safety and to protect electricity supply. The Regulations define the clearance requirements using two zones, the Notice Zone and Growth Limit Zone.

Under the Regulations, Marlborough Lines is responsible for the cost of a tree’s first trim. Subsequent work to maintain and keep the tree clear of the Growth Limit Zone is the responsibility of the tree owner.

The Growth Limit Zone is the space around the power line where trees must not encroach at any time. The Notice Zone is one metre beyond the Growth Limit Zone. The distance required for each Zone is dependent on the line voltage, as shown in the table below:

OVERHEAD LINE VOLTAGE

3.5 metres

11,000V (11kV)

If a tree is left to grow back into the Growth Limit Zone, Marlborough Lines will issue the tree owner with a “Cut or Trim Notice” detailing the action required including approved contractors, time limits, and the need to provide us with at least three days notice before the work is carried out.

Offences under the Tree Regulations Under the Regulations an offence is committed when a person who has been issued a “Cut or Trim Notice” fails to arrange for trimming of the tree in accordance with the Regulations. It is also an offence to fail to advise us in advance of when the work is to be undertaken. Tree owners are liable for a fine of up to $10,000 for these offences plus up to $500 a day for each day the offence continues.

Plan before you plant Stay safe - use a professional Only approved contractors are permitted to work within four metres of power lines and the tree work should be left to these trained and experienced professionals. Attempting to do the work yourself could result in injury or even death. Please contact Marlborough Lines for a list of contractors approved to undertake tree work around power lines.

Many of the issues associated with trees and power lines can be eliminated by giving consideration to the proposed location of the tree, its species, and its likely ultimate height. Before planting trees in the proximity of power lines, please contact Marlborough Lines for advice on suitable tree species and appropriate locations for planting.
