Thief nabs kids’ cash

By Bill McElhinney “It’s disgusting!” Marlborough Football general manager Andrea Smith-Scott stands beside the hole in her office window at A & P Park in Blenheim. Some time on Saturday night a thief punched the hole in the window, unlocked it and entered Andrea’s office. They then made off with up to $1000 in cash and supermarket vouchers worth around $3000. Continued on page 2 Andrea Smith-Scott, General Manager of Marlborough Football, at the A & P Park office window that someone broke to gain access and steal money raised for young players.

Junior players tournament money stolen Continued from page 1 On Saturday Marlborough Football ran one of their only two annual gold coin collections. Players and supporters that came to the park that day donated a gold coin and hundreds of dollars were collected. “This money is used to send our junior players to various tournaments around the South Island,” Andrea says. “Whoever did this is stealing from kids. It’s disgusting!” The thief had initially tried to get through a window. When that failed, a hole was punched in the glass and the thief

opened the window and climbed through. Although it looks as though the glass has been cut, a glazier told Andrea that the hole was punched out by someone using a heavy object. Andrea noticed the break-in when she called in at the park on late Sunday afternoon. “I go down there to put out the rubbish tin,” she says. “There were a few people I knew playing nearby and when I walked past and saw the hole in the window, I thought one of them had done it by kicking a ball through,” she says. “But it wasn’t them. Then I saw the marks where someone had tried to force the window and I realised we

had been burgled.” The thief had also rifled through a pile of new sweatshirts in the office and tried some of them on. “But they are all marked with player’s titles on the front, so they could be easily identified,” Andrea says. “The intruder must have realised this and decided not to take them. But they were left strewn around the office.” But whoever tried them on also left their XXL jacket behind, which will be of some help in identifying the culprit. “Someone must have been watching the place,” says Andrea. “They

Love for art shared By Celeste Alexander Growing up, local artist and teacher Sudhir Duppati admits he did not have a very strong artistic foundation, but after some competitions he began to recognise his ability. His experience and techniques learned along the way will be shared in two art workshops being held this month and in September. The Marlborough Boys’ College visual arts teacher was born and raised in India where he says art was a huge part of his culture. “We lived and did art... it was a huge part of my daily life and it is very much part of my being,” he says. Sudhir tried getting into art school but it took three years due to the high competition of entrants. Meanwhile he studied other subjects including engineering, commerce and computer science which he ended up leaving half way through to join the art school. It was a five year course in painting, majoring in print making. After a stint working for a uni-

versity and in North East Africa, he took up a position at Otago Polytechnic before moving to Marlborough. He has held an exhibition at the Detour Gallery but not a workshop in Blenheim, so he was excited when approached by the Marlborough Art Society. His workshops, ‘Mixed Media’ and ‘Figurative’ are being held as part of the Society’s Spring Series 2017 classes and workshops. Speaking about the Mixed Media workshop which will be held over two days, Sudhir says he will be using stencilling, print making, painting and drawing techniques. “Starting with an image people bring with them, whether it be a self portrait, pet or object, we will use these different techniques to build up layers. “Ultimately I’m more curious about the process, rather than the outcome. It gives people an opportunity to be more open,” he says. The first will be Mixed Media on August 19-20.

may have seen we were taking up a collection. “I lock the office up and leave about 5.30pm on a Saturday. The break-in was later that evening.” Police confirmed yesterday afternoon that three arrests had been made following the burglary. CCTV footage of a male cashing in the stolen Pak’nSave vouchers led to a car being pulled over and cash and some of the stolen vouchers were found. A 24 year old male has been charged with burglary and is to appear in the Blenheim District Court on August 14. Another male and a female have been arrested and charged with receiving stolen goods.

A near capacity audience at the Wesley Centre in Blenheim on Sunday were treated to a spirited rendition by the Marlborough Singers of extracts from Gilbert and Sullivan’s Pinafore and the Mikado. The choir sang in beautiful harmony, obviously totally enthused by their charismatic conductor Robert Tucker whose repartee and general announcements were matched by splendidly sung solo items. The choice of songs were cleverly crafted to tell a story and provided for cameo entertaining performances by the Lord High Executioner, Derek Harding, and the Three Little Maids, Viv Grigg, Margaret Hastings and Louise Woods. Accompanied by the outstanding pianist Kathy Moseley it was a fun performance, professionally performed and enjoyed by all. The Marlborough Singers will now be preparing for their Christmas special on Sunday December 17 at the ASB Theatre.

Truck company adopts school By Celeste Alexander With the rising number of heavy transport using the roads through Renwick, a local firm has partnered with Renwick School to promote safety and awareness among the students. Renwick Transport and Renwick School are the first in Marlborough, and the second in the south island to join the Road Transport Association’s ‘Adopt-ASchool’ Youth Road Safety programme initiative. T h is progra m me is designed to bond safety focused and mutually beneficial relationships between operators and schools. agreement with principal and members of the school’s road safety committee.

A charity evening to honour Waitohi rugby player Bevan Moody was an outstanding success. Bevan, nicknamed ‘Bear’ died in May after suffering a cardiac arrest on the field and friends and family of the devoted dad held a special casino night to raise money for Bevan’s children. “We’re very pleased with the support we got,” Waitohi captain James Giles says. “About 250 people turned up and we have raised more than $50,000. A big thank you to all who came and all who donated prizes. ”The money will go to the New Zealand Rugby Foundation Trust which will make it available in the future for his daughter, Maddison, two, and yetto-be-born son. Partner Kendra is due to give birth in about a month.

Renwick Transport also took along two of their trucks and drivers which were parked outside the school hall. Each of the classes took turns to look through the trucks as well as learn about being safe when walking and cycling with trucks passing. “Our team was very excited to sign the Goodwill Agreement with Renwick School as we want to help educate children and their families of the importance of safety surrounding our trucks. “These rigs are travelling the roads up to 90km per hour, weighing around 50 Renwick School principal Simon Heath, students Delyth James-Sitters, Nesa Wardtonne and they take a bit to man, Imogen Brophy and Renwick Transport directors Jax Smith and Jen Hall, with a goodwill agreement signed between the school and transport company. come to a grinding halt.”

Book Festival a winner The Marlborough Book Festival, held at the weekend, was a stunning success. Marlborough Readers and Writers charitable trustee, Sonia O’Regan, said the event was 90 per cent sold out by the start and attendance was up by about 300 on last year. “It’s growing steadily every year,” she says. “The festival has wide appeal and we’ll start planning now for next year.” Sonia says they are also grateful for the support they get from the local sponsors.

90 years since the lights went on By Bill McElhinney Electricity – we take it for granted because it is so much part of our daily lives. However, getting power to Marlborough 90 years ago proved to be a thorny issue. While other parts of New Zealand were being provided with power from the state supply Marlborough, with a comparatively small and thinly spread population, was left out. The blunt message from the government of the day was generate our own power, or go without. In the meantime, Blenheim homes, shops and streets were lit by gas, while power came from gas and steam engines. The tiny town was a gloomy place after dark. Having failed to convince the government that Marlborough should get state supply, the locals decided to go it alone and applied

to set up their own board. The Marlborough Electric Power Board became a reality on October 25, 1923. The first hydro scheme was built in 1927 on the Waihopai River, about 40 kilometres from Blenheim. The next step was the erection of transmission lines to carry the electricity to the town. A little more than two years after the first contract was let, the Waihopai station began generating, and at 8pm on a dark and drizzly night on August 6, 1927, the lights were switched on at the Cleghorn Memorial Rotunda in Market Place. The power initially went only to street lighting and a few domestic consumers, but by the end of the following week, supply had been extended over the whole of Blenheim and Springlands.

Bus turns Bayleys blue Blenheim’s big orange bus has been painted blue, the colours of the new sponsor, Bayleys Marlborough Real Estate company. Mitre 10 Mega has sponsored the ratepayer funded service since 2007 but has relinquished the sponsorship. Bayleys has signed up with the Marlborough District Council for a year to keep the service going.

Wine songs take the mickey By Cathie Bell Keen folk singer Helen Redshaw’s day job is a wine tour operator, and it is that which has inspired her song-writing. One song is about Marlborough sauvignon blanc, and the other is called ‘I wish my daddy was a winemaker’. “We’re doing these tours, and you take people to a family-run winery and the stories about this wine being produced for a daughter’s 21st or a son’s wedding, and you can see the visitors thinking ‘cor, I wish my dad was a winemaker’.” Both songs will be on the set list when she plays at Pataka Food Store on August 15 as ‘With Strings Attached’ with Bruce Fergus, and they can be found online. “Wine should be fun, music should be fun, so they have a little humourous message for people. “It’s a wee bit of fun.” Helen plays the guitar, fiddle, banjo, and bodhran, as well as singing. “I don’t write many things, but I have written a couple of tunes and a couple of songs… I do find it easier doing songs other people have done.” With Strings Attached, 7.30pm-9.30pm, August 15 at Pataka Food Store, tickets $10.

Picton Rotary president Des Slow says the major fundraiser for the club is the annual Gondola Hill Walk. There is a group of people in Picton who, despite being few in numbers, are making a significant contribution to their community. By Bill McElhinney The Picton Rotary Club has only nine members, but every year they raise about $10,000 for local causes. The latest recipient of the club’s generosity is the Marlborough Sounds Community Vehicle Trust. The Trust was set up three years ago to transport Marlborough patients to and from appointments at Nelson Hospital. They currently use vehicles provided by the Marlborough branch of Omega Rentals, but Trust president, Bryan Strong, says they are raising money to buy their own vehicle, and hope to have one within the next few months. “One of our members saw what the Trust was doing and brought it to our attention,” Picton Rotary past president Kurt Trixl says. “As past president I had access to some discretionary funds and

I have had so many pets as I grew up on a farm... they are all still strong in my memories.

My dog JD was my most memorable pet. He was a Great Dane- Rottweiler cross. He was my baby!

My best friend from ages five to ten was my cat Cuddles. She had class!

I had a pet goat many years ago, her name was Missy and she was just like a pet dog, followed me everywhere and had to be part of everything I did.

Our first dog Moe. She was lovely and I remember her being very protective of our first child, guarding her pram.

Rubbish Dear Ed, Even while believing that wheelie bins would reduce the amount of windblown litter in Blenheim I applaud the decision by council to instead look at ways to improve our present bag-and-bin system. With the knowledge and expertise of people like our solid waste manager Alec McNeil I am confident solutions will be found without increasing our already substantial rates. Wheelie bins make it too easy for people to ‘bin it and forget it’ at a time when we all need to think really seriously about our ‘throwaway’ habits if we are to leave a planet our children and grandchildren can enjoy as we have.

Many of our rivers are in a sorry state already, with townies as much to blame as farmers, so I’m glad our mayor has joined other mayors in asking the government to levy, or allow councils to levy, a charge on plastic bags. It’s a start. I would like our council and the whole country to become proactive about litter too: a national campaign first to raise awareness that “it’s not okay to litter”, then fines. If you don’t believe we can make New Zealand live up to its ‘clean green’ boast, just remember how we used to feel about smoking, about drink-driving... The Litter Patrol Blenheim

Corporate Bully? Dear Ed, T he spat (oh how punny!) between corporate King Salmon and Marlborough Aquaculture over a site in the outer Pelorus Sound is a case of corporate bullying. I have not been impressed by King Salmon’s style or performance with its expansion, fish deaths and visual and sea bed pollution and rhetoric. The Sounds - a public recreational and tourism area - would be better off without them. And add to the detractions that King Salmon is majority foreign owned - the powerful Malaysian Tiong dynasty. However the bigger picture of aquaculture expansion leaves me uneasy

and after flying over the Sounds from Auckland I was dismayed to see the growing proliferation of mussel farms packed into bays. Why not off-shore mussel farms as is done in the Firth of Thames? W hen is enough enough? The carrying capacity is finite and it’s not surprising, mussel farm growth rates have consequently slowed considerably. Marlborough District Council needs to take stock of the situation and so does Environment Minister Nick Smith who when in Opposition was aghast at the “wild west goldfish” mentality about mussel farm applications. Putting a claim in for region By Cathie Bell Winemakers have made a claim for the Marlborough region to extend all the way to the Conway river, south of Kaikoura. Wine Marlborough general manager Marcus Pickens says members are keen to see the wider region defined, as it means that vineyards in Kekerengu can be confirmed as Marlborough producers. Several wineries have vineyards in southern Marlborough and in northern Kaikoura district, areas such as Kekerengu and Clarence that feel more affinity to Marlborough than Canterbury. “It future-proofs us as Marlborough.” NZ Winegrowers filed Marlborough’s and 17 other wine regions’ geographical indications applications just after midnight on the day the new law came into force.

Acting chief executive Jeffrey Clarke says the Geographical Indications (Wine and Spirits) Registration Act is a significant advance for the New Zealand wine industry. “Our ‘Geographical Indications’ - the names and places where our wines come from - are at the very heart of the New Zealand wine story and this new law provides an additional level of protection for them.” The Geographical Indications (Wine and Spirits) Registration Act formally recognises the collective intellectual property of a wine region by allowing for registration of the region’s name as a GI. This ensures that the name is reserved only for wine from that region. Importantly, registration will also give the region’s winegrowers a greater ability to protect those GI names from misuse

overseas. The Intellectual Property Office of New Zealand will now review each GI application to see whether it meets the legal requirements, and decide whether it is accepted, which may take up to three months. If it is accepted, the office advertises it in its journal, and there are three months for any opposition to be notified. If no objection is raised, the GI will be registered. If it isn’t accepted, applicants are given six months to respond to a ‘compliance report’ explaining why the application does not meet the requirements. New Zealand wine exports are valued at $1.66 billion for the year to the end of June 2017. The industry is working towards a goal of $2 billion of exports in 2020.

Breastfeeding while working By Celeste Alexander New mum Charlotte Alford will be heading back to work in October, and thanks to her supportive employer, she will be able to continue exclusively breastfeeding her daughter Eloise. Charlotte is the head teacher at John Street Preschool in Blenheim and has been on maternity leave since giving birth to Eloise in April. She says she is ‘extremely lucky’ to be able to continue breastfeeding once she returns, as it’s her goal to do so to the end of the year. To manage this she will have Eloise enrolled for two days in the under-2’s section where she can feed on demand, and the remaining three days of the week her husband will be taking care of her. “He is self employed so we have the flexibility for him to spend time with Eloise while I’m working. I’ve been expressing and freezing breast milk so there will be plenty available, plus he can bring her in to me for a feed.” In her workplace, Charlotte says she is the third staff member she knows of who has been supported while they breastfed. “It’s awesome and I feel really

lucky. I would probably reconsider where I worked if I didn’t have that support. “I think it’s important for breastfeeding mothers returning to work to feel supported.” Charlotte also says the preschool is equally as supportive of parents enrolling their children if they want to provide expressed breast milk or go in for feeds. “I know that it’s on the cards to get a breastfeeding chair at the preschool.” While breastfeeding ‘hasn’t been the easiest’ for Charlotte, she is really happy that she has the ability to do it. “I had problems with Eloise not latching properly until she was four days old and I can definitely say that it’s a lot harder than people say. “I’d like to stay away from formula if I can so I’m grateful that I’m in a position that I can continue,” she says. ---------------This Friday will see The Big Latch On take place in Blenheim. It is being held at the Blenheim Bowling Club, 65e Weld Street in Redwoodtown. It begins with registration at 10am followed by the official ‘latch on’ count at 10.30am.

Fixing broken lives Doug Avery has taken his fight with depression and turned it into a campaign to make rural people stronger. Cathie Bell talks to him about his new book, The Resilient Farmer. It’s Grassmere farmer Doug Avery’s first book, written with the help of writer Margie Thomson, and he couldn’t be more chuffed with it. “I never thought I’d ever have anything to do with a book.” But now he doesn’t just have a book, he also has a significant online presence, with videos and seminars pushing his message to farmers that they’re not alone and they need to talk about their emotions, and not get isolated in their depression. It’s a bleak world that Doug knows about. He details in the book just how bad it got on his farm Bonavree during the eight-year drought in southern Marlborough, where the green garden wife Wendy had around their house had him howling at the sky in a drunken rage. Doug says at the trough of his depression he was ‘so bitter and angry’. “I thought at one stage of my life, I’d buggered everything up. “I was a broken man. I had to break to change. I’m now grateful for that, because the change is so good. I’ve learnt the art of critical thinking, and I love teaching people to do that now. “I didn’t realise how hamstrung I was prior to breaking.” He credits stock agent John Ladley with forcing him out of his house, off the farm, and down to a North Canterbury field day

where he listened to then-Lincoln University lecturer Derrick Moot talk about lucerne. That meeting electrified him and showed him a whole new way of farming, which he used to transform Bonavree. “I got handed some hope: hope in the form of a new idea, a solution to a problem I hadn’t yet understood. I thought my problem was drought; it

“There are two growth industries in the world, Doug says – diabetes and depression.” wasn’t. My problem was the way I farmed and the way I thought about things.” He started winning awards, including South Island Farmer of the Year and the supreme award at the Marlborough Environment Awards, and toured the country to tell other farmers about it, becoming ‘the lucerne lunatic’, he says. It was on those tours he realised it wasn’t the farming that was the problem for many rural people, it was their emotional health. Farmers would confide in him, many ringing in the evening. Their wives would approach him after his speeches, saying their husbands wouldn’t talk

to them, wouldn’t share. That is a sign that something’s wrong, Doug says. In his severe depression, wife Wendy k new it was bad because he stopped wanting to talk to people, refusing to go out to social events. Normally a garrulous and social person who loves to talk to others, Doug says in the book that he ‘went quiet for years’. “They don’t really believe me, and I admit it’s hard to imagine, but during that horrible time I did. I lost the art of communicating. “To me, if anybody loses that ability to communicate, there is a problem. In fact, that’s what I see as the main telltale sign that something is wrong.” Bonavree is now ably managed by son Fraser and his wife Shelley, Doug says, while he builds his resilience mission and travels the world with Wendy. Despite all the time he spends away from Grassmere, it’s not yet time to leave the farm. “I did look at a house in town, Wendy and me, it had what we wanted, but I had a panic attack as I stepped in the door. I felt another attack on the way. “The next week, I bought a farm. It was a ridiculous thing to do. I had a bit of explaining to do with Wendy.

“We had a big talk about it all, what we’re doing, how we’re living, we’re not quite ready yet. Soon but not yet.” Right now, he’s focussed on staying well and helping others be well too. There are two growth industries in the world, Doug says – diabetes and depression. “Investing in combating that to me is so important. This book is one of the things currently I’ve got on to work on this.”

Free personalised vehicle ‘fit’ check-ups Marlborough Road Safety is teaming up with the Automobile Association and Occupational Therapy New Zealand to run another CarFit event, a FREE community education service for older drivers. CarFit events offer a free check on how well people personally ‘fit’ their vehicle. The check makes sure drivers are aware of all their vehicle’s safety features and can adjust them to fit. Information is also provided that can improve people’s safety as drivers and maximise their mobility in the community, says CarFit coordinator Rochelle Comber from the AA. “Older drivers can improve their safety by making the best use of their car’s features. “For example, making sure they are using all their mirrors to minimise blind spots, having their seat adjusted to the best position for them, and being aware of other safety features in their car and using them if they need to.” A CarFit check takes about 20 minutes and involves trained community volunteer technicians and health professionals working with each participant to ensure they ‘fit’ their

vehicle properly for maximum comfort and safety. The technicians also offer tips and advice and information about products or services that older drivers might benefit from. “Staying independently mobile is incredibly important for our well-being. “We all depend on our cars to access essential services as well as for family and social activities. “It’s amazing what can be done to keep people driving safely for longer. Programmes like CarFit are going to become increasingly important as the number of older people in our community grows,” says Comber. About CarFit CarFit in the USA was created by the American Society on Aging and developed in collaboration with American Automobile Association, AARP and the American Occupational Therapy Association. The programme has been adapted for New Zealand by the NZ Automobile Association with advice from the Occupational Therapy New Zealand. Local government and non-profit community groups help to run CarFit events.

Volunteers sought in Picton Alzheimers Marlborough provides a day programme on Fridays at the Marina Cove Rest Home for people affected by dementia in the Picton community. Carers are provided with much needed respite and this often means the person with dementia can stay at home longer rather than going into care.

Volunteers play a vital role in the provision of this service by assisting staff with activities and enjoy the pleasure of making someone smile. Anyone who feels they could spare a few hours each fortnight to support the programme on a voluntary basis should contact Alzheimers Marlborough for further information.

Deteriorating hearing links Deteriorating hearing makes it increasingly difficult for us to converse with other people. We mishear things with greater frequency and have to keep asking people to repeat things. All this eats away at our self-confidence and can have a negative impact on our general well-being and our quality of life. But can hearing loss increase your chances of developing dementia? Research by the John Hopkins School of Medicine1 showed a strong association between hearing loss and both the earlier onset and more serious degrees of dementia. Although the reason for the link between the two conditions is unknown, the investigators suggest that a common

pathology may underlie both, or that the strain of decoding sounds over the years may overwhelm the brains of people with hearing loss, leaving them more vulnerable to dementia. They also speculate hearing loss could lead to dementia by making individuals more socially isolated, a known risk factor for dementia and other cognitive disorders. Could we do something to reduce the effects of hearing loss, cognitive decline and possibly delay the onset of dementia? Absolutely! Get your hearing tested, get it managed, and enjoy a longer cognitively active life. Call Nanci Lanoue at House of Hearing in Blenheim on 03 579 5353 for a confidential discussion today.

By Bill McElhinney There’s a new face at Blenheim home healthcare firm Access Mobility. The Main Street shop sells mobility scooters, power chairs, wheelchairs and a wide range of mobility equipment. Adrien Borrie has joined Shirley Phillips at the store, bringing with him a wide range of mechanical skills. “I’ve had a life-long interest in motor racing,” says Adrien. “I’ve enjoyed restoring vintage vehicles, particularly Rileys, and racing them at Ruapuna.” Adrien says he learned his mechanical skills at an early age by helping his father, who was a very practical man. As a youngster, Adrien took school holiday jobs working in local garages. After moving to Blenheim from Christchurch earlier this year, Adrien says he was looking to do something where he could help people, and this position fitted the bill.

Adrien Borrie brings his mechanical skills to Blenheim home health care firm Access Mobility.

Access Mobility’s Nelson technician, Max Biggs, will still come to Blenheim to service and certify hospital grade equipment for local rest homes, but Adrien plans

to eventually take on more of this work as well. In the meantime, he will be busy keeping mobility scooter users mobile by repairing and servicing their machines.

Kindy gym relocated after earthquake’s By Celeste Alexander The Awatere Kindy Gym has been running for a couple of years in Seddon, but after last year’s earthquake damaged its venue, it was forced to relocate. This caused delays but now Plunket Marlborough is excited to announce that it is up and running at the Awatere Rugby Clubrooms. The weekly programme runs during terms on Monday mornings from 10.30am and is a guided movement’s activity programme aimed at getting your child active and learning through fun, activities and music. Samantha Dodds, Plunket’s community services and injury prevention co-ordinator says it’s a great programme to hold in Seddon which gets parents and caregivers together in a social setting and encourages children to get active and moving.

“Particularly as it’s cold outside, we hold this indoors so kids can run around and enjoy the activities in comfort.” She says there is already a ‘great’ group of volunteers helping to run the kindy gym, but she would love to welcome more. “It’s really exciting to have this available to the Awatere community again, so if anyone could spare a little time to help out I’d love to hear from you.” All preschool children aged 0-five years are welcome, $3 per family. Concessional cards are available. “Take along a drink and morning tea, cuppas and a chat for caregivers are provided,” Samantha says. To volunteer your time to help with the kindy gym contact Samantha on 021 701 413 or email samantha.dodds@plunket.org.nz

Brown algae in township’s water The brown algae have been appearing in the township’s water supply for the last couple of months. A cause has not been pinpointed but earthquake disturbance is suspected to have affected water alkalinity levels. Tests do not indicate the algae pose any health risk. However, the pipes at the headworks of the town’s water supply will be lowered in the coming week to enable greater natural filtration to take place. Council’s Operations and Maintenance Engineer Stephen Rooney says while the

HAMISH BLACKWELL

work is underway the water may run dirty from time to time although every effort will be made to keep that disturbance to a minimum. If the water coming through the network does become discoloured, the existing MIOX chlorine treatment will not be working effectively and people should boil any water they use for drinking and cooking. To minimise household disruption, it is suggested Seddon residents store some water in containers to use at any time there is discolouration of the tap water.

Plunket clinic back up and running By Celeste Alexander The Awatere has a Plunket clinic up and running again after last year’s big earthquake damaged its rooms in Seddon. There is also a new face to the role of Plunket nurse to the rural area, with Marion Rowe having been in the position for a month now. She says the clinic is now being held in a room at Seddon School once a month, although if needs change then so will the frequency. “We’ve been extremely lucky with the school providing a room. They have been incredibly accommodating and welcoming. “The number of clinics depends on the needs of the community, but I’m flexible and this may change,” she says. Marion, a born and bred Marlburian, began her career as a hospital nurse and also has qualifications in social work. She has worked in both areas, including time as a Well Child nurse with Maataa Waka before contracts changed.

Her social work also led her to work on the Children’s Team set up under the Vulnerable Children Act before taking up her current role with Plunket. These are all useful skills, she says, when it comes to supporting families who are still feeling the effects of earthquakes that have damaged the area. “It’s certainly been an unsettling time, especially with the clinic changes and a new face, so I’m taking the time to get to know people and learn what their needs are. “What I’ve discovered is there is a real resiliency in the Awatere. The community has really banded together and set up systems to help one another. “There are some very proactive people there doing great work for the community,” she says. Marion is particularly complimentary of those before her who founded the Seddon Plunket Clinic and have been instrumental in keeping this service going for the community.

Tussock Run By Celeste Alexander This year’s annual Tussock Run will be the sixth held and is already looking to be another successfull event. Pe ople f rom a l l over Marlborough and afar will converge on Sunday, August 27 to support the Seddon School’s major fundraiser for the year. Starting and finishing at the school, the event consists of three stages for people to enter, a 5km, 10km and 15km walk/run. Before, during and after the run there will be wonderful entertainment for all the family, food stalls and a silent auction. The prize-giving is always an exciting time with many entrants winning spot prizes ranging from rafting trips to mussels. The gates open and registrations will begin at 8am and prize giving will be held after

the stages have completed at 12.45pm. It has become an iconic event in the Awatere after it was initiated by Seddon School’s principal Tania Pringle. She thought it would be a great fundraising idea for the school, and with the help of the ‘Friends of Seddon School’ support group it became a reality. The very first Tussock Run saw around 200 people take part. Last year attracted a record number of entries of 513, enabling the school to raise over $20,000. Online entries close at 6pm on Thursday August 24 and cost $30 for adults, $10 for youth, $30 for ‘Flyer’ of one adult and one child, and $75 for a family of two adults and up to three children. Visit www.tussockrun.co.nz for more information.

The Plunket rooms were built in the 1970s by Plunket members with money from local fundraising. Life member Helen Harris, who joined in 1974, says in her time there was a lot of catering for weddings and events to maintain the rooms. “Through those years we had to pay for nurses’ cars, a cost the government has since picked up. That was a huge cost on places like Seddon due to the mileage they did. “Over the years there has also been tremendous support from the community. Anyone who wanted to do good in the community most likely belonged to Plunket. “Plunket’s mission is to look after mothers and babies, so if a mum or baby was sick we did meals, supported them financially with travel or breast pumps, basically what ever the need was. It’s always been a wonderful, friendly and supportive group to belong to,” she says. The rooms were also used by a nurse and

Clubs of Marlborough darts player Shannon Campbell is off to Australia in October to represent New Zealand in a women’s team.

By Bill McElhinney A keen eye, steady hand and sharp concentration have won Blenheim darts player Shannon Campbell a trip to Australia. Shannon has been selected in the South Island Women’s Darts team to travel to Dubbo, in New South Wales, Australia, in October to compete is an Australasian competition. Six women from the South Island and six from the North Island make up the women’s teams for the event. “I’m excited,” Shannon says, “but I’m nervous, too. It will be a challenge.” In the meantime, Shannon is busy honing her skills and fundraising for her trip. Shannon, who played netball and soccer as a youngster, began darts almost by accident. “My husband Stephen Campbell, plays darts and needed another person one night four years ago to make up a team of four for the Friday night competition at the Clubs of Marlborough. “I went along and found I really enjoyed it. They’re a good group of people and they really have fun.” Shannon was a quick learner and soon began winning games. Now she is the fifth-ranked women’s

darts player in the South Island. “You need good hand-eye coordination and steady nerves,” she says. “I really like to concentrate on my game, so I don’t want anyone talking to me while I’m aiming.” Players must stand the regulation 2.73 metres from the bullseye on the dartboard to launch their darts. The standard competition game is 501, where players must go from 501 points to zero points faster than their opponent. The winner must hit a double to win the game. The quickest path to victory is to score the highest numbers, which means aiming to get your darts into the narrow rings on the dartboard. Shannon, who works as a preschool teacher, hones her skills by competing at the Club on Tuesday and Friday nights. She also has several dartboards at home, although she says there are times when she doesn’t practise much. She has been using the same set of darts, a set Stephen gave her, for years. You can get a good set of darts for as little as $35, Shannon says, but you can also move up to signature series darts which can cost as much as $200.
