Boys and blokes Boys learn skills at Menz Shed By Bill McElhinney A bunch of busy little boys gather at the Renwick Menz Shed every Friday, eager to learn some practical skills. The five, six and seven-year-olds, some accompanied by parents, are initially given hammers, nails and wood off-cuts and encouraged to build whatever they like. “The Menz Shed is all about community projects,” Rick Gleeson says, who welcomes the boys and encourages them to get going. Come and join us at the Menz Shed Continued from page 1 “We want to help youngsters build practical skills, to learn to be hands-on.” “Some of these boys have never used tools before,” says another Renwick shed helper, Derek Waller. “We want to encourage those lads that have a practical aptitude. We know there is a shortage of tradesmen and this may be the beginning of a future career for some.” The Menz Shed organisers were approached by Renwick School principal Simon Heath about a year ago, and since then have hosted groups of boys during the school terms. “We get them building things like toy trains and

buzz out of each project when they see what they have made.” As well as helping the youngsters, the Renwick men have

been making large planter boxes which are being used to beautify High Street in Renwick. They are also refurbishing the seats from the Renwick Anglican Church Hall. “People can bring wooden items for us to refurbish and repair,” says Rick. “The shed is a great place for men to come and socialise,” he says. “We have one young man who comes from the IHC and another who comes in a wheelchair.” The Menz Shed movement aims to bring men together in a community space to share their skills, have a laugh, and work on practical tasks individually or as a group.

Young jazz stars to shine again By Bill McElhinney The Southern Jam Youth Jazz Festival is back in town next week. The jazz festival is the only event of its kind in the South Island and provides a great opportunity for young musicians to learn from other great, well-respected musicians. A range of free public performances take place from Wednesday to Saturday at various venues around the region, starting with the Marlborough Boys’ College band, Marian College and Christ’s College bands at the Vines Village at 1.30pm on Wednesday. The Marlborough Girls’ College appear with other bands at the Picton RSA from 4pm on Wednesday. This year two new schools are taking part – Verdon College from Invercargill and Middleton Grange School from Christchurch. There are also some new venues – Vines Village, The Blenheim Club and the event is also going to Seddon for the first time. Bands will play at Cozy Corner Café, the

Car display for cancer By Celeste Alexander Have you ever wanted to be up close and personal with a thumping V8 engine, view the timeless beauty of vintage cars or take the kids to see their favourite speedway cars? A large number of modern through to vintage cars and motorcycles are expected to converge in Blenheim later this month, all in the name of charity. The inaugural ‘Daffodil Vehicle Display for Cancer’ will be taking place at Brayshaw Heritage Park on August 27, featuring a huge array of cars from local clubs and businesses. Working behind the scenes to organise this event is the Vintage Car Club of New Zealand Marlborough branch. This year, the Vintage Car Club decided to have its 36 branches nationwide to get out and about at the same time on local runs, hosting car displays and taking the public for rides. The idea is to raise money for the Cancer Society. The Marlborough branch has taken a wider step with this idea and approached local car clubs and businesses to collaborate on a

car display, branch president Kelly Landon-Lane says. “It’s very much a community event that is raising money for the Marlborough Cancer Society, and so far the feedback has been great. “We are expecting a great display of veteran and vintage cars, classic cars, hot rods, rally cars, sprint cars from the local speed-

way and the odd tractor from the Farm Machinery Museum next door,” he says. The vehicle display will be held on Patchell’s Green at the park between 10am - 3pm and the whole community is invited to go along. There will be a gold coin entrance fee and inside there will be plenty to keep the whole fam-

ily entertained, including train rides, Mr Whippy as well as light refreshments. All money raised on the day will go to the Marlborough branch of the Cancer Society. Do you have an interesting car or motorcycle you’d like to display? Simply arrive at 9am on the day and pay a $5 display fee.

Soccer theft sparks support By Bill McElhinney “This has shone a nice light on a bad situation!” Marlborough Football general manager Andrea Smith-Scott is thrilled with the outpouring of support and generosity following publicity about the theft from her office last Saturday night. A hole was punched in the A & P Park office window to gain access and cash raised for junior soccer was stolen as well

as hundreds of dollars worth of supermarket vouchers. “We’ve had lots of messages of support,” Andrea says, “and some generous donations to help replace the money raised for the junior players.” A $1000 donation has come in from the Wellington Phoenix Football Club and $500 from Darren Soroka, Sports Unlimited.. Andrea has also had a call from

former New Zealand football representative, Ben Sigmund. “ B e n h a s clo s e t ie s t o Marlborough,” Andrea says. “His family comes from here and his grandparents live in Blenheim. “He has helped coach our junior teams in the past.” Ben is sending Kiktman Nike gear which Andrea can auction. The Phoenix Club are also donating football kit items for a

fundraising auction. Local firms and individuals have also been quick to respond, Andrea says. She has had donations from Glenn Morrison at Marlborough Floorpride, Scenic Circle Hotel, BP Computers, Jay Bosch at Glass Master, the Rangers Clubs of Marlborough football team Murray and Lorraine Black.

Council has cat plan Community service card holders can get their cats desexed for $50, about $100 less than normal, thanks to a funding initiative from the Marlborough District Council. The council wants to help curb a booming cat population and has put up $7500 for desexing and microchipping, which will be done at the Springlands Vetinary Centre. Cat owners who may be eligible are asked to call SPCA Marlborough for terms and conditions.

Healing night at Tuamarina Tuamarina resident Rebecca May O’Sullivan, who bills herself as a clairvoyant/medium/healer, is organising another event at the Tuamarina Hall. The Feast Marlborough Friday night food market was a major success, attracting a large crowd of visitors and locals.

Feast here to stay By Bill McElhinney Feast Marlborough, held in May in conjunction with the St Clair Vineyard Half Marathon, was a major success, the Marlborough District Council has been told. A report presented to the council’s Planning, Finance and Community Committee last week said the event had proved very popular with visitors and had the potential to become an iconic event for the region. Some funding for Feast Marlborough came from the Council’s annual Commercial Events Fund. Feast Marlborough organisers recognised that Marlborough is a great food growing valley and to celebrate what the province produced, decided to put together the threeday food spectacular. The event kicked off with a night food market in central Blenheim. Celebrity chef Martin Bosley ran a top of the south seafood bar and was joined by other

chefs who prepared an assortment of dishes championing Marlborough produce. The event was very popular and all the food stalls had sold out by around 6.30pm, organiser Chris Shaw told the council committee. “We were surprised by the crowd at the Friday night market,” he said.” In answer to a question from councillor Michael Fitzpatrick, who raised a concern about stallholders coming from outside Marlborough, Chris assured councillors that the focus would be on having Marlborough people participate. Feast Marlborough was held on the same weekend as the popular Saint Clair Vineyard Half Marathon, which this year drew 4100 participants, up from 3500 last year. Feast Marlborough organisers are now considering delivering a version of the Friday Night Feast around other major Marlborough events where viable.

Freight trains may be running between Picton and Christchurch within a month. Repairing the main north railway line following the November Kaikoura earthquake has progressed quickly in recent weeks, KiwiRail Chief Executive Peter Reidy says. “We are getting very close to being able to move freight again on rail in the South Island, just nine months after that 7.8 Kaikoura earthquake. “I am proud of what has been achieved and how our KiwiRail people, working with our partners in the North Canterbury Transport Infrastructure Recovery alliance, have responded to what had been a devastating blow to the network. “This has been a mammoth task. When the repair job is complete it will represent one of rail’s biggest rebuilds in New Zealand since the Second World War,” Peter says. “There were close to 60 major damage sites including tunnels, bridges, embankments, and the line had been buried under more than 100 slips and landslides. Approximately 60 bridges were damaged and repairs are being carried out at more than 750 sites. “Freight services will initially run at night so that work on the rail and road networks can continue during the day. “However, getting the line open, even on a restricted basis, will ease pressure on the alternate road. We expect it will take up to 2000 trucks per month off the roads.”

Debbie estatic with award By Celeste Alexander There’s much to smile about for Debbie Webster who returned from the Mike Pero Real Estate annual awards and conference held on the Gold Coast, Australia recently. Debbie, who is the brand and territory owner for Marlborough won the Runner Up in New Zealand for franchisee, in recognition of the number of sales for the last financial year.

An ecstatic Debbie says she was overwhelmed once again as she had ‘no idea’ she had sold so many properties in Marlborough. “Thank you Marlborough, to all those clients who have trusted in me to sell their prized asset... without you there would be no recognition or awards. “I do also want to thank my staff Maggie and Minnie, as every business has a backbone and without them I’d be lost.”

New generator helps radio broadcasting in emergencies

AMI Blenheim Branch Manager Karl Townsend, Marlborough District Council’s Stephen Rooney and Marlborough Lines’ Brian Tapp with the new generator on the Wither Hills. AMI Insurance has shown its support for the Marlborough community with a $14,500 contribution towards a much-needed generator to help ensure public safety messages are broadcast during emergencies. The new back-up generator has been installed on the Wither Hills for Brian FM, the community radio station that broadcasts across Marlborough and to Kaikoura. The radio station made its airwaves available to Marlborough Civil Defence after the 2013 Seddon earthquake revealed gaps in the local radio communications network. However, when the Kaikoura earthquake struck last November, a power outage caused Brian FM to go off-air for 45 minutes immediately following the quake. Brian FM’s Andrew Jeffries says: “It was clear that a back-up power generator was needed to ensure emergency messages are broadcast

to the community. Thanks to the contribution from AMI, Marlborough now has a more robust emergency broadcast system that could help save lives.” The project has been very much a partnership. Council has allowed the use of the land and Marlborough Lines has helped out too. The generator means there's additional backup power in an emergency for Marlborough Lines’ VHF communications network and its system monitoring. Marlborough Mayor John Leggett says it’s a good example of different organisations working together to build resilience in the community. “It means there is now a much stronger capacity to get emergency messages out to our residents.” “I’d like to thank AMI, Marlborough Lines and Brian FM for helping to improve the Civil Defence capability in Marlborough.”

Sounds research builds knowledge on sedimentation The Council is building up a substantial body of scientific research about the estuaries of the Pelorus Sound/Te Hoiere, data which puts a spotlight on its growing sedimentation problem, and the implications it has for the ecosystems of the Sound. In Kaiuma Bay, opposite Havelock, fine mud has smothered seagrass beds, discouraging shellfish like cockles and pipis. Kaiuma, the report says, is now one of the muddiest estuaries in the country. The nearby Mahakipawa estuary has experienced similar effects, as has the Havelock estuary. The muddy conditions have enabled the invasive Pacific oyster to form large beds which, while stabilising the sediments, also displace native species. Scientists who have been monitoring these degraded estuaries for the Council say it is vital to identify the source of the mud, and take steps to enable the estuaries to be gradually flushed out, so they can begin to recover. Coastal scientist Dr Steve Urlich says the sources of the sediment from the Te Hoiere/Pelorus and Kaituna Rivers

Opportunity to honour young achievers Nominations for the Marlborough Youth Civic Awards are now open for nominations. Instigated by the Marlborough District Council’s Youth Council in 2013, the Youth Civic Awards are to acknowledge young people who have given voluntary service to others within Marlborough. Marlborough Mayor John Leggett says extending the concept of the Marlborough District Council’s Civic Honours so that youngsters can also be recognised for outstanding community service should help to inspire good citizenship and positive values amongst teenagers. Mr Leggett has praised the Youth Council for continuing to support the initiative that recognises outstanding contributions made by young people in Marlborough. “These young people are so positive and so keen to encourage their peers to contribute – they’re a great example to all of us.”

Under the terms of the award, young people aged 13 to 20 will be eligible for nomination from within the community for service to the community, for sport or recreation, arts and culture, the environment, for leadership and mentoring. The award is to recognise service and does not apply where payment is received. A panel, made up of the Mayor and individuals from the community, will consider nominations. Like the Civic Honours, there is no fixed number of awards to be made. Nominations close on 31 August 2017. • More details about the awards can be found on the Youth Council website www.myvoicemarlborough.co.nz under the Youth Council tab or on the Marlborough District Council website www.marlborough.govt.nz/ our-community/grants-and-awards/youth-civicawards.

Repairs and maintenance

Be wary about using tradespeople who turn up on your doorstep suggesting your property ‘needs’ work. Whether it’s painting your roof or cleaning the filter in your heat pump, as a homeowner it’s wiser to deal with a reputable business than a stranger on your doorstep. But repairs and maintenance can be overwhelming for elderly people, especially for those living alone. The Good Homes Project has created three practical

checklists to help people assess what repairs or maintenance work is needed on their property. The checklists are free print them out from www. goodhomes.co.nz If you don’t have a computer, go to the Library and ask for help at the information desk. There’s a ‘solutions’ section with tips about getting repairs done. The Good Homes Project suggests homeowners Talk to family or friends about who they use and the quality of

their work Go to Citizens Advice Bureau, RSA, Age Concern or Grey Power for a list of local tradespeople Always get at least two written quotes for a job - unless you know the tradesperson well and are confident in their work. The Sun Benefit fraud People saying Metiria Turei should be prosecuted. I have been to court three times and was only asked to repay the money, not charged so why treat her differently? She is more of a role model for showing young Maori they can get off the benefit and do anything they work hard at. Why go after benefit fraud for 100 million when the government could go after the rich tax fraud for 5 billion plus. Oh that’s right they are all mates in each others pockets.

Alcohol and tobacco users pay hefty taxes for their legal drug of choice and deserve health care accordingly. But illegal users such as synthetic cannabis have no place in our health system-paying no tax often from illegal income in the first place and they ‘made the choice to indulge’ regardless of social class instead of legal addictions available. Elections soon!

Spring Creek roundabout Personally I feel the roundabout being built at Spring Creek is the best option, roundabouts are built to create flow of traffic rather than halting traffic as lights would do. Sure it’s taking a long time and I’m sure affecting the local businesses, however you’re not the only ones, I’m sure New World and businesses south of Blenheim are still suffering from the road closure of the main state highway. A large roundabout if done correctly works great.

Town bus sponsor Wahoo, good to see we have a new sponsor and the council for the town bus. What it needs now are companies like the Clubs of Marlborough to see if they can put adverts inside the bus , like ‘Take the bus to the club, have a bite or coffee , then catch the bus home . Good way to spend the day.’ Good for all.

In early ‘70s my platoon was issued as a matter of course, with old ex Vietnam wet weather gear (aka ‘jacket, foul weather, for the use of’) well past their use date with sewn up rips and tears, all water proofing washed out. Friday August 4, 2017 Wairau Pharmacy held a pamper afternoon tea on Saturday, to give back to the community. People were nominated through their social media page and they chose 8 lucky people to enjoy it. From left Kayla, Briar, Julie and Tara are getting their nails painted.

Michael Rea, Gavin Graham and Simon Green. Michael and Simon lost over 10kg in 12 weeks and raised money along the way for Georgina Westergard-Allen (inset).

Over $10k raised for Georgina By Celeste Alexander Tremendous community support has continued to pour in for six-year-old Georgina Westergard-Allen who will be undergoing life changing surgery in America later this year. Georgina was diagnosed with a form of cerebral palsy after her birth called Spastic Diplegia and has been accepted for a life changing spinal surgical procedure in America. Several fundraisers have been held throughout the year and thanks to a dinner and auction held on Tuesday night, over $10,000 was raised. This takes the total amount raised to over $75,000, close to covering the $100,000 it will cost for the travel and surgery. The dinner and auction was organised by local woman Erica Sprosen who, with the help of others, collected donations of items for auction from generous businesses and individuals.

LANDSCAPING

Also on the night was the final weigh in results of Michael Rea and Simon Green, sales consultants for Mark Stevenson First National Real Estate Ltd. They challenged themselves to a 12 week fitness and weight loss challenge and raised money for Georgina along the way. They told those who attended the dinner and auction they were ‘inspired’ by Georgina to make positive changes in their lives. farming Marlborough

Opportunity to question election candidates On Thursday evening August 24, Marlborough farmers will have an opportunity to ask hard questions of election candidates at a meeting to be held in the Renwick Hall. At the July monthly meeting of Marlborough Federated Farmers, the organisation decided it would host a meeting in order to air critical rural questions and hear political party policies.

President Sharon Parkes said farmers were asked to submit questions for formal presentation but there would also be opportunity for informal questions from the floor. “It’s a great initiative as there’s several crucial issues facing farmers.” Compliance costs and unnecessary bureaucracy have hampered farming production, she said.

Rural fuel delivery

Nothing’s too rugged for these fencing contractors Rugged terrain in the Marlborough high country has traditionally wreaked havoc with fences, but a high-performing contracting team has found adding a bit of extra grunt to the materials used can help overcome the costly problems associated with poorly performing fence lines. Michael Renner, along with his father Terry and brother Bradley, runs Renner Contract LTD fencing contractors – or as they are known in the Marlborough region - Renner Fencing. Together the Renner team discovered they could surmount the problems posed by uneven country, and reduce the reliance on heavy machinery, by stepping up the strength of the fencing products they use in their work. “Most of the time it’s very difficult to get the machinery in there to install wooden posts and that’s why using these steel fences has been particularly effective,” says Michael. Another reason for using steel products in the high country is issues caused by heavy snowfall. “Using good quality steel posts in the high country has helped reduce sagging fences during heavy snowfalls,” says Michael. “High snowfalls in these areas would push over traditional wooden posts but using steel products keeps them going strong in the winter months.” Although wooden posts are popular in the Marlborough region, Michael said the cost of the wooden posts and the steel posts are in a similar range. “With wooden posts you have to use machinery to drive them into the ground and that means money. Using Waratah fences might cost more in base materials, but machinery isn’t needed and that helps to level costs.” However, it is not only problems associated with machinery inaccessibility and snow that have been overcome by more strategic fencing. In the lower Valley, water pollution issues in vineyards have also been overcome. “Installing netting over dams in the region has stopped feral animals and vine debris from polluting the water and clogging pumps,” Michael says.

Michael Renner of Renner Fencing has stepped up the strength of fencing products to deal with problems posed by steep and uneven country.

“Fencing using quality products saves farmers a lot in the long term. The Australian made Waratah products we use are strong, quality steel and will last longer than other cheaper imported products.”

Ali Seaua, left, Ian Jimmy, Barry Hava and James Collin were all winners in last year’s competition and all will be competing in this Sunday’s Silver Secateurs.

Hoping to be a cut above the rest By Bill McElhinney There are 60 million grapevines in Marlborough, and every year they have to be cut, stripped and wrapped. The men and women who turn out on a minus four degree frosty morning to do this important work are unsung heroes in one of Marlborough’s major industries, grape grower James Jones says. When the Sun called at James’ O’Dwyers Road vineyard this week a team of pruners from Focus Labour Solutions were hard at work pruning hundreds of vines. “Each vine is a puzzle,” James says. “What the pruners do is vital to the success of next season’s crop.” There are 30,000 hectares of vineyards in Marlborough and each of the 60 million vines is handled several times during the pruning and growing season. Thousands of vineyard workers

make millions of cuts. Marlborough employs more than 1600 RSE workers in the winter and another 890 in the summer and growers are dependent on the work they do. Some of the team at James’ vineyard will be competing this weekend in the annual Silver Secateurs contest for vineyard workers. It is a chance to show off their skills and competition is intense. “They deserve recognition for the great job they do,” James says. “They can be rewarded for quality and great workmanship.” The competition began in 1995 as a move to improve quality and provide recognition for the skills of the workers. Correct pruning is crucial to producing quality wine and the competition aims to raise standards and recognise the skill of the pruners.

Wine Marlborough events manager Georgie Leach says this year they are celebrating 21 years of Silver Secateurs, and this year also marks another milestone, 10 years of the Recognised Seasonal Employment or RSE scheme. The Silver Secateurs competition is a really important event within the Marlborough wine industry here, Georgie says. There are a couple of new events to the competition this year including novice cutter and championship vine stripper, and then there will be an award for the most number of entries per contractor. It’s a great day out for the whole family, Georgie says, with a barbecue, coffee cart, Mr Whippy and a bouncy castle on site. The competition is being held on Sunday starting at 9am at Yealands Grovetown Vineyard.

Top builder, top results By Celeste Alexander Peter Ray Homes has scooped three awards at the Registered Master Builders House of the Year awards, announced at a gala dinner on July 28 at the Marlborough Convention Centre. Peter Ray Homes was awarded Gold and Overall Category winner for the PlaceMakers Volume/Group Housing New Home, and Silver for the GIB Show Home category. Rowan and Donna have achieved Master Builder recognition every year for over a decade, acknowledging they are ‘capable of achieving high quality builds and exceeding the standards of those deemed to be top in their field’. “Winning a category is reinforcement of the high

standard of homes we build. We provide total flexibility in design, style and product to insure client satisfaction and use standard design options to help achieve the build to budget requirements. “We also pride ourselves in using all local suppliers, materials and tradesmen for a consistent product finish,” they say. Peter Ray Homes is one of eight Gold Award winners that will now be judged against winners from around the country to find the National Gold Reserve finalists. National category winners and the Registered Master Builders Supreme Awards for House of the Year and Renovation of the Year will be announced at a gala dinner on November 25 in Auckland. PBA

That cog named Crotty If you want to pin-point a reason why the All Blacks could not beat the Lions in the third test (besides the officiating) Ryan Crotty is that answer. Having just de-iced myself from my seat at AMI Stadium at the Super Rugby semi-final where the Crusaders beat the Chiefs 27-13, it’s become apparent Crotty is now a must for the All Black backline. In near freezing temperatures, the No 12 who was injured for the key matches of the Lions tour, proved what a crucial cog he is in the midfield of a rugby team.

He organised the red and black defensive line, and there was a lot of it to do, and he made the right decision on attack. Such was the defensive effort, the Crusaders had just two minutes in the Chiefs 22 all match but still managed four tries. Crotty was named man of the match at the ground, with a surely frozen crowd clapping in approval at the decision. It was just one degree at the time of the announcement, so clapping was one heck of an effort. Crotty may not be the flashiest player, he may

not have the explosive power of a Ma’a Nonu or Sonny Bill Williams but, like Walter Little 20 years ago, he’s solid, reliable and dependable. Just like most quality players, his work may be understated but his quality and impact cannot be. The Crusaders are a better team with Crotty in the midfield than they are without him. One man does not make a team and certainly a quality team like the Crusaders is built on a team ethos, but what Crotty does is sublime in its innocuous nature and simplicity in execution.

Anna Wilson, 33 Business Support to Andy Poswillo at Bayleys Marlborough Sponsor – Bayleys Marlborough Reason for participating: “I could not wait to put my name forward for Fight For Life Marlborough! I adore contact sports and never say no to a challenge. Although I have two boys at primary school, I didn’t really know a lot about Life Education Trust when I signed up but after learning more about Life Ed, I feel proud to be fundraising for such a fantastic charity. “The best thing so far about training for FFL is the people. Leaving the house on these cold winter

nights is that much easier when you get to train with such a cool team. “Shout out to my patient husband, Jeremy and my boys, Seth and Gus who have been so supportive of my decision to take part in this event. Thank you to my sponsor, Bayleys Marlborough, you guys are amazing! I am SO excited to get in the ring on September 30. I hope to make my sponsor and supporters proud. Go Red Team!

Sharyn first joined the club 38 years ago as a general member and co-driving as navigator for her husband. She went on to hold the position of publicity officer, secretary and treasurer, and is still treasurer today. In addition to being on the committee, Sharyn still competes at local events such as the Autocross in her rear wheel Starlet. Colin Harvey also received a special award from Motorsport New Zealand, after being nominated by the club for his contribution to the sport. Club president Richard Bateman says both awards were well deserved and greatly supported.

Makos v Lions at Seddon The Awatere Rugby Club is hosting a Tasman Makos v Wellington Lions warm-up game next Thursday, 2.30pm at the Seddon Domain. The match is a fundraiser for earthquake repairs in the district. Before the main event, you can enjoy watching Marlborough Maori v Nelson Maori at 12:30pm. Admission: Adults $10, children $5.

Cyclocross series Sunday Marlborough’s sixth Cyclocross Series is being held over six Sundays this winter. While the courses are largely flat for this new sport, there is also weaving and meandering around a spectator friendly loop, a number of obstacles such as barriers to hurdle, slopes (or stairs) to climb carrying or pushing your bike, short sharp pinch climbs, off camber slopes, grassy paddocks and hopefully muddy conditions to ride through to test the skills and resolve of participants. Event four at Waihopai Valley Road, Renwick, 11am to 3.30pm on Sunday.

Awards ‘well deserved’ By Celeste Alexander The efforts of two Marlborough Car Club people have been recognised and celebrated at the club’s prizegiving last weekend. Sharyn Cameron was awarded a life membership to the club in recognition of her many years of service and was described as being ‘instrumental in the success of the club, highly regarded by the motorsport fraternity and treasured by the Marlborough Car Club’. She says she was ‘speechless’ but very honoured. “They did a good job of keeping me in the dark and sneaking that past me,” she laughs.

Japanese students ‘loving’ time in the region By Celeste Alexander There has been plenty of laughter, fun and cultural exchanges had between Queen Charlotte College and 10 students from the Kozu High School in Osaka. The students arrived late last month and are in Marlborough for two weeks and are being hosted. It has been a while since the college hosted this type of exchange, and the group from Kozu was a first. In a short space of time the students have soaked up much of what the region has to offer

including boating, visiting a marae and exploring Picton. The group and several QCC students also participated in the International Students games evening at the Marlborough Girls’ College and more. One family says from their own experience, having a student in their house has been ‘an interesting experience’. “The difference in culture is noticable and questions are flying to and fro with a lot of laughs in between. “Major differences are the food, strict school regime and

the show of emotion or lack of, which were confusing in the first few days. “Other things are no different at all like humour, making friends and interests, once we got to know each other better it got better and better. “After talking to our own exchange student, his comments were that he’s loving his time in New Zealand but his most valuable experience is the interaction with the students and families. His aspiration is to study English at University back in Japan,” they say.
